every shuro/toshiro hater who claims that toshiro loves falin for the same traits he hates in laios should venmo me 200 dollars immediately
#dungeon meshi#this really is the reading comprehension website i keep forgeting#listen. listen. falin went to school. lived with her family. longer than laios did. do you know why autism is diagnosed less in girls?#not clear to anime-onlys but laios ran away from home at like 13. to join an army. and then was sort of free-wheeling for a while#falin went to school where she made friends learned went to town etc etc#falin was NOT exhibiting the same behaviors as laios are you kidding me. she was conditioned to mask those behaviors#one of her main character traits is that she's self-sacrificing!! that's like her whole thing!!!#im not even gonna go into asian culture and social etiquette bc clearly tumblr's white dunmeshi fans cant handle it#'sometimes...ppl from different countries.....act different? think different??' the western hemisphere is not the center of civilization!!!

People really piss and shit themselves over writers making their nonhuman fantasy races nonhuman. Literally they cannot comprehend alien or fantasy races that are not meant to be human race/sex/gender/culture/etc allegories like classic Star Trek. They can’t even understand that Zootopia and Beastars were never 1:1 metaphors for black/white race relations.
#personal#piss on the poor reading comprehension#NOT digging at Star Trek tos btw I love that show dearly#but not every story is trying to make social commentary#or is working from the baseline that all life would work the same way as humans do broadly#even Star Trek didn’t always use its aliens as allegories#sometimes they were just stories of strange things out there in the universe#not digging at zootopia or beastars either

✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ the... ' everyone thought you'd broken up '
listen, you knew dating a good soccer player in high school was a big deal, but you didn't realize how big of a deal it really was when he went pro.
this was the same boy ( now man) that you'd been dating since you were 14, so nothing really changed your views on him. if you could love him through his awkward phase, and he could love you through yours, there was no way you'd break up.
again, you didn't realize that your relationship was such a big deal. it wasn't that the two of you were a secret, it was more of a 'private not secret' situation.
so when the two of you woke up in your shared bed because of just how many notifications the both of you were getting, you knew something was up.
and low and behold, something was wrong. when you opened any social media the first thing you saw was a strangely amazing photo of you and your long-term boyfriend kissing. really, if it wasn't a paparazzi photo, it would be your lock screen.
"aren't we just the cutest?" he asked you, phone thrown back onto his bedside table as if he didn't have a care in the world. (and he really didn't, not in this case)
truly, the only thing that may make him angry in this whole situation is the fact that he got woken up far earlier than his usual routine by all the commotion.
but of course, as he was dozing back off, you were reading the comments, as any loyal significant other would.
soccerluvr45: omg is that is gf from high school? i thought they broke up
okay, yeah. he had a rather public instagram account in high school that his rabid fans had found that had pictures of the two of you, but you'd never broken up?
reading through the many comments, it was like everyone had collectively decided the two of you'd broken up.
"mhm...just ignore it. the pr lady will deal with it." he mumbled as he grabbed your phone from your hands, laying it beside his before wrapping his arms around you.
"go to bed, 's too early to deal with all this."
his fans were silly, if they could see you with this bed-head man right now, they'd see there was no way the two of you would ever break up.

✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ the... ' pr nightmare '
anyone who knew your boyfriend knew he was...a little extreme.
and unfortunately for you, this also applied when your relationship became public because of a slight slip of focus from the two of you. it wasn't that you were trying to keep your relationship a secret, you'd already been together a year now, but you also weren't trying to out yourselves.
yet, one singular minute when the two of you slipped away to the bathroom together at a soccer banquet...well lets just say a paparazzi was scarily ready to snap someone, anyone's, photo.
so here you were, sitting in a terrifyingly big office with your boyfriend and almost his entire management team.
"do you know what this could do to your reputation?" his manager asked. "it's just two adults doing adult things, they should've been in that bathroom! that would've gotten them—"
"okay, sir..."the pr woman cut him off, ever too enthusiastic to be talking about your private lives.
"you just need to ignore all of this until it goes away, alright? no press interviews after games anymore," she sighed as if this was basic comprehension. (your boyfriend wasn't the smartest but he also didn't need to be treated like an idiot.) "and no posting on any social medias for the time being. do you understand?"
"yeah, yeah. no talking to the grown men after games. and..."he grimaced at the thought of his next condition. " c'mon is posting on my socials that bad? i don't post about us anyways."
"at. all." and the room felt as icy as the pr woman's stare.
"yeah, no, okay i got it. no social media."
after another thirty minutes of this, with them saying basically the same stuff to you (even though you had no real social media presence anyways), you guys finally left.
"no fucking posting? what if i have to talk about a game coming up?" "i'm sure she knows how to do her job, love." you soothed your boyfriend as you got in the car the company arranged to have you two taken up with.
"yeah, well whatever. give me your hand," and who were you to say no to your boyfriend?
he took your hand and placed it on his neck, a place where you could see a few bites and hickeys if you really looked hard enough.
before you could protest he took a picture, posting it on his VERY public account with the caption...
' i love my woman ;) '
before turning off his phone completely.
"let's see them try to get ahold of me now."

✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ the... ' what picture ? '
how do two chronically offline people realize their relationship is now under scrutiny by the entire world?
the simple answer is...they don't!
you've never been interested in social media the way other girls your age had been. really, you'd rather just watch a video essay on every little topic that interests you than sit and watch six second videos then scroll all day.
to say the least, fast and forever changing social media just wasn't your thing.
and your boyfriend? he hardly even used his phone. unless it was for business or you, the thing was practically shoved away somewhere he couldn't care less about.
he would rather be reading or spending time with you out on a date...which is exactly the predicament the paparazzi put you in earlier this week.
the two of you were photographed having a little picnic and reading date at a small park that was pretty far out of town, assuming no one there knew, or even cared, enough to take a picture, but alas, someone did.
you and he had spent the rest of your week in pure, relaxed bliss. he had a game on saturday, so besides him going to practice and working out, the two of you stayed inside almost all week to prepare for the rather hectic weekend.
to say the game was a nail biter would be the understatement of the century. after two additional times, it was your boyfriend who scored the winning goal.
of course, you cheered the loudest, not noticing plenty of fans eyes on you unlike how many used to just chalk you up as an ecstatic fan.
as the post game interview came for him, you decided to stay closer to the door just incase it ran short. sometimes it was a one and done for him and others the questions went on for at least fifteen minutes, it just depended on his mood.
of course, the first question was about his game winning goal, but the second one threw him and you for a loop.
" what do you have to say about the photos of you and your reported girlfriend that have come out this past week? "
"...huh? what photos?"
eventually, the two of you did see the pictures, and all you could do was laugh because...how had you two not found out about this?
and you also made the picture your phone lock screen, but he didn't have to know that.

what do you think of tone indicators in general?
unfortunately my thoughts on tone indicators are somewhat nuanced. fortunately, this is tumblr not twitter, so I can just write out my full thoughts in one post and be as verbose about it as feels necessary.
speaking as an autistic person (and I know there are other autistic people who don't hold this same view, this is just my perspective), I think as an accessibility tool, the extended set tone indicators in current popular use is fundamentally misguided.
the oldest ones, /s for sarcasm and /j for jokes, make sense. their notation isn't the most intuitive thing ("does /s mean sarcastic or serious?") but it's not too difficult to explain what they mean. I've had to spend my whole life learning by brute force what different tones of voice mean and what they change about how I'm supposed to interpret something, so I already know what "read this in a sarcastic voice" and "read this as a joke" are supposed to mean. my existing skills can be translated into the new form without too much effort.
the same thing applies to emoji and emoticons. I know what facial expressions mean, because I had to learn what they mean. figuring out if :) is sincere or not from context is a skill I've already needed to develop. it doesn't come naturally for me, but it's something I already at least somewhat know how to do.
most of the tone indicators in current use uh. don't work like this.
tone indicators like /ref or /nbh don't correspond to specific tones of voice. I don't have a "I'm making a reference" voice or a "I'm not talking about a person who's here" voice that I can picture the sentence being read in. these do not indicate tones, they're purely disambiguators. they clarify what something means without necessarily changing how it would be read out loud.
and on paper, that's fine, right? like, it's theoretically a good thing to take an otherwise ambiguous statement and add something to it that clarifies what you meant by it. the problem is that these non-tone tone indicators are not even remotely self-explanatory. it's up to me, the person who is being clarified to, to know what all these acronyms are supposed to mean, and how they change the way I'm supposed to interpret what something means.
it's, quite literally, a newly-invented second set of social cues that I'm expected to learn separately from the set that I've already spent my whole life figuring out, and it works completely differently.
sure, these rules are (in principle) less arbitrary than the rules of facial expressions and tones of voice and how long you're supposed to wait before it's your turn to speak, but they're also fully artificial and recently invented, which means they're currently in a constant state of flux. tone indicators go in and out of fashion all the time, and the "comprehensive lists" are never helpful.
in theory, I appreciate the idea of people going out of their way to clarify what they mean by potentially ambiguous things they post online. if it worked, that would be a really nice thing to do.
however, sometimes I imagine what the internet would be like without them. what if instead of using /s, the expectation was that if you're sarcastic online there's no guarantee that strangers reading your post will know what you meant? what if instead of inventing more and more acronyms to cover every possible potentially confusing situation, we just... expected one another to speak less ambiguously in the first place?
so, I on paper like the idea of tone indicators. I think it's good that some people are trying to be considerate by being extra clear about what they mean by things. but if tone indicators didn't exist, and people who wanted to be considerate in this way instead just made a point of phrasing things more clearly to begin with, I think that would be vastly preferable to even the most well-implemented tone indicator system.
also /pos sucks because there's something deeply and profoundly wrong for an abbreviation that means "I don't mean this as an insult, don't worry" to be spelled the same way as an acronym that's an insult

okay NOW i can say this because more stuff came out. i posted something like this last night and then deleted it because i felt bad for the shit i said but honestly idgaf and this person deserves it.
sturniololuv08, FUCK YOU. you’re a HORRIBLE person. 28 willingly talking and flirting with minors is INSANE. that’s not even the worst thing you’ve done, somehow, because that’s genuinely repulsive and you should keep your relationship with minors strictly platonic. BUT YOU ALSO WRITE RAPE FICS!??? YOUR FICS MAKE ME WANT TO THROW UP. they’re disgusting, abhorrent, egregious, gross, horrendous, nauseating, repellent, foul, and distasteful. i can’t put into words how much you utterly disgust me. i haven’t been here that long to get to read the fics when they first came out, but the fact you have gone this long getting away with that shit is beyond comprehension. and you think you can just take a hiatus or whatever IS STUPID!!! you’re a threat to others around you, and you honestly make me so mad i just had to go outside.
i’m typing this from my back porch, motherfucker. maybe you should try it to! i know people with full time jobs, kids, and normal lives who are younger than you. BITCH, SEXUAL ASSAULT IS NOT A KINK, ITS A FUCKING CRIME, CUNT.
imagine you went through something so traumatic one time, and now you’re on tumblr because you like some youtubers, and THEN YOU SEE SOMEONE WRITING ABOUT THAT SAME EXPERIENCE YOU HAD.
consent is sexy! consent is the best thing you could do during that, and sex should be something intimate in anything and NOT INITIATED BY NO CONSENT LIKE IN YOUR FICS.
this is fucking disgusting and i never thought i would have to type out these fucking words, but seriously you make me so mad. the way you had those ideas makes my blood absolutely boil. and then thinking playing the victim will make everything better??? BITCH, FUCK YOU!!! we are fans of three guys who fight and laugh in a car every friday, but yet you had these sick and twisted thoughts to write smut about them, WHO ARE YOUNGER THAN YOU and DEFINITELY would not be okay with this either.
i hope you get toothpicks under your toenails and then you have to punt a boulder, i hope you wash your hair tonight (that is, if you even fucking take showers) and and your shampoo is ACTUALLY NAIR, i hope both of the sides of your pillows are burning hot, i hope you get banned off of every social media, i hope you never get a job because your digital footprint is so bad, and i hope you learn from your mistakes.
writing about rape is NOT OKAY. in any way, shape, or form. it’s a heartbreaking thing that happens to women and men worldwide and daily. it takes away their pride, confidence, and sometimes even their ability to get intimate with anyone after. and writing about it is truly revolting. i can’t even put into words how truly furious i am that you think that is okay to write about. i don’t hold back when it comes to shit like this. this is horrendous.
to my mutuals, followers, or even just other fans of the triplets who have been directly affected by this specimen, just know that i love you, i care for you, and you’re so brave for speaking out about it or even just go through it. i’m so proud of you. and you should never have to go through that.

nuts reading trigun in japanese 3 - "weirdo" and vash's pronoun switching
disclaimer: my jp reading posts are all for triangulation purposes and nothing else. scanlating mangas is tough work. @-@ i know this.
"Weirdo"
the word 'weirdo' in 2024 english carries connotations of neutral-bad or positive depending on the context of the speaker. depending on how one curates their internet space, weirdo often leans more positively with the same meaning as eccentric, but not always.
however, but in JP, "weird" is more specific and often negative. there's the well known, hentai 変態 (ie. deviant, pervert, freak, extremely negative in tone), and in this case, kimochi warui 気持ち悪い (gross, off-putting, bad vibes). eccentrics are more as 変人 henjin and carries a more neutral tone.
in this panel here papa nebreska uses 気持ち悪い in katakana キモチワルイ in reaction to vash busting his ass saving people and putting out of harms' way. vash's vibes are so off putting to this wanted man he's actually creeped out.
this is particularly interesting to me bc the english translation didn't end up portraying how utterly weird vash's mindset is fully. it wasnt until wolfwood points out how flawed vash's pacifist mindset do i get a proper frame of reference of norms in this world, but i might be having skill issues in english comprehension. ;w;
Pronoun switching
quick. 俺 Ore! 僕 Boku! 私 Watashi! they all mean "I", and there's 2 spectrum of expressions going on here thats commonly believed. 1st being Masculinity to Femininity. what's the 2nd?
the answer is... Rudeness/Assertiveness to Politeness. and gosh does vash switch a lot between Boku and Ore in the first 4 chapters of this manga lmao.
(to be clear, while i am aware of trans hc thats very popular in the fandom, im not at all diminishing or talking about gender expression specifically. im talking about what vash is presenting himself as in context.)
so to perhaps oversimplify this, in JP the idea of politeness and hierarchy is so super duper important, its very built into the language itself. and Japanese is a very high context language. if someone of a higher or equal standing uses "Ore", its totally fine. but if someone of a lower standing uses "Ore", they've committed a social faux pas.
as an obvious example, if a fresh new employee approaches his Boss with "Ore", he's potentially getting dressing down in the company. maybe in front of his coworkers. if this employee forgoes polite speech (keigo) and uses a too Assertive and Casual speech, they've Really Fucked Up and are one foot out the door.
this is also tied up in gender to some extent, hence why girls using Ore is incredibly uncommon, but guys would use Watashi in certain contexts such as talking to their Boss. (woo woo the forces of hierarchy/patriarchy... or something.)
so. vash switches his pronouns for the same effect. when he uses Ore, he's making himself sound more assertive and confident. when he uses Boku, he's often making himself sound less threatening, smaller, open, and trying to avoid conflict.
sound familiar?
bc if you translated all of that into a character design instead of relying on just jp pronouns, we'd get TriStamp Vash.
slight spoilers, but this is even true in one of the tensest moments between vash and wolfwood, where the latter provokes vash and tears into his pacifism ideology. vash sticks with boku in this scene as he says his piece.
if he ever uses watashi, it's bc he wants to be polite straight out of the gate with an air of formality. (this is japanese manners and the proper approach to talking to strangers. mainly to get a feel for each others standing without offense until context changes.)
i also wanna point out maybe something obvious here but.
real life pronoun switching in japanese is a COMMON thing. no one ever really sticks to 1 pronoun bc of Good Manners and the aforementioned hierarchical systems in place. it is only mostly in anime/manga and video games where characters overly prefer 1 due to this being a good shorthand for characterization. this being how rude or polite they are, and in some cases, Gender.
#trigun#trigun meta#trigunbookclub#vash the stampede#somehow this post wont appear in the search or on my dash like its shadowbanned and im sad

★ Previous Chapter
a/n:
hello!!!
first of all, i am so sorry for taking so long to update this story. ٩(ˊᗜˋ*)و ♡
life happened and i got sooo busy. the time i uploaded this fic was when i just started at my new workplace and shortly after a few weeks, i was already preoccupied with work. at first, i was laser-focused on getting used to my new work and the culture. then later on, i found myself playing a more important role in the office that required my undivided attention lol. besides that, so many things happened in my personal life as well that i didn't have the time and energy to write.
btw i'm now a writer by profession as well so oftentimes i would feel drained af after writing corporate write-ups. tbh, i also got hit by writer's block, especially for this fic because the plot i have in mind for it is lowkey intricate, and for the most part, i haven't decided on what route i should take story-wise. so during those 2 years, i was constantly trying to reconstruct the story in my head, and here we are!
i'm back but i'm not so sure about updating regularly as i'm still incredibly busy, but i will do my best! the latest kny seasons inspired me to write again (aka my crush for muzan lol).
hopefully, everyone is still here to read this. ٩(ˊᗜˋ*)و ♡
as always, comments and kudos are highly appreciated!
happy reading!
-
"Can you outline your key policy platforms should you be elected President of Phario? Given your extensive background in the human resource industry as well as your rich connections owing to your business ventures in Obelisk Kibutsuji, do you first plan to address the pressing issue of the national unemployment rate?"
"Indeed, that's correct. As President, one of my top priorities will be to strengthen our nation's workforce, which is crucial for advancing our economy. I have a comprehensive plan focused on job creation, vocational training, and support for small businesses. These initiatives will not only reduce unemployment but also stimulate innovation and competitiveness within our economy.
I also aim to implement policies that ensure equal access to education, equipping our citizens with the skills needed for the evolving job market. Healthcare reform is high on my agenda. I'll ensure healthcare assistance is accessible to everyone, public hospitals are well-maintained, and healthcare workers are fairly compensated and protected by the state in any dire situations. Additionally, I'll push for technological advancements and infrastructure development to attract both local and foreign investments.
Addressing social issues is equally important, and as a devoted ally of these communities, I'm committed to fighting all forms of discrimination, especially against women and the LGBTQ+ community. We must ensure everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or identity, has equal opportunities and protections under the law.
Moreover, I'll advocate for the rights and welfare of people with disabilities, ensuring they have access to the necessary resources and support to lead fulfilling lives. This includes improving accessibility in public spaces and promoting inclusive employment practices.
Animal welfare will also be a significant focus. We need to enact and enforce laws that protect animals from abuse and ensure humane treatment.
Lastly, I'll champion the rights of minorities and immigrants. Our nation is built on the strength of its diversity, and it's imperative we create an inclusive society where everyone feels valued and respected. This includes reforming immigration policies to be fair and humane and implementing programs that support the integration and empowerment of minority communities.
In essence, my administration will be dedicated to creating a sustainable and inclusive economic environment where every Pharian has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to our nation's progress."
Muzan stood confidently at the podium, a modest yet proud smile gracing his face after addressing a journalist's question amidst a room bustling with media personnel.
Today was the day where presidential candidates shared their platforms, which also served as an open forum for engaging with the press and fielding inquiries on a wide array of topics—from current events to personal matters.
With his seasoned composure before cameras and crowds, Muzan navigated the spotlight effortlessly. His articulate delivery drew admiration from all corners as he outlined his plans for the presidency, filling you with pride as you watched from the audience.
Among the attendees, your smile beamed with pride and unconditional support for him. Akaza, who is sitting right beside you, maintained a stoic demeanor outwardly, though inwardly, he couldn't deny a hint of impressed regard. Muzan's comprehensive platform and commanding presence left an undeniable impact on him.
Eloquence had always been Muzan's forte, a skill honed through years of being a businessman and somewhat of a public figure, as among his peers and in the business landscape in general, he is well-revered and widely celebrated.
Beyond his ability to articulate ideas, he possessed a magnetic charisma—an invaluable trait for navigating the intricate world of politics and public service.
Several hours later, the policy speech slash press conference finally ended, and now you were on your way to meet up with Muzan at the lobby of the hotel where the gathering was held when a few journalists spotted you among the sea of people who were also exiting the function room.
Akaza was right behind you and is also on full alert, an important instruction your husband told him when he appointed him as your personal bodyguard a few years back. Committed to his duty, he stood there in a stance where he is ready to take action should anything happen that is out of the ordinary.
Mics were stretched out and placed within just a few inches of your face, and one of them took the liberty to ask you a question: "What are your thoughts on Kibutsuji Muzan's campaign platforms?”
Very much like your husband, you also wore a modest yet confident smile on your face as you held eye contact with the journalist who asked you that question before displaying your own version of eloquence as you answered,
"To say that I am proud while listening to him share and advocate for the causes he wholeheartedly believed in would be the biggest understatement of the decade," you said with a fond chuckle before continuing, "even before he filed for his candidacy and even way before he became the man we all know now, he has always been outspoken about these things. He would always share with me his desire of making significant changes in the world, hoping no more children would have to endure what he did. As many of you know, Muzan, my dear husband, came from very humble beginnings, and unlike me, he has faced challenges far beyond my own. His vision and intuition surpass that of most, and so, as cliché as it may sound, his words and strong convictions carry a weight and authenticity that are strong enough to enable him in doing the impossible and inspire others to believe that a better future is within our grasp."
Akaza listened intently to your answer, finding himself captivated by your words. The way you addressed the press made you sound like a candidate yourself who's also sharing her platform. In that moment, he couldn't help but feel an overwhelming surge of pride as he continued to absorb your statements.
The journalists surrounding you mirrored his sentiment, clearly impressed by your response—no surprise from the esteemed Ballerina Queen of Phario.
It had been quite some time since you last entertained interviews, having retired and chosen to stay away from public engagements.
"Among the plethora of initiatives he wishes to take action on once he's elected, what resonated with you the most?"
You paused, contemplating the list of campaigns your husband had presented earlier. Just as you were about to respond, an arm encircled your waist and gave it a tender squeeze.
It was Muzan.
"Knowing my wife's love for animals, I'm certain she's most excited about what I have planned for animal welfare," Muzan interjected warmly.
You playfully rolled your eyes, eliciting amusement from not only your husband and your respective bodyguards but also the press. "You say that as if it's a bad thing," you quipped.
Muzan chuckled fondly. "Not at all, my love. Your passion for animals is one of the many reasons I fell for you."
The same journalist who had asked you the second question now directed his attention to Muzan, eager for his response. "Based on the most recent public survey, you're likely the most favored candidate to win the elections. What can you say about that, Sir Kibutsuji?"
Muzan smiled bashfully at the reporter, his eyes reflecting a mix of humility and determination. "I'm incredibly honored and thankful that our fellow countrymen have placed such faith and confidence in me. It's a humbling reminder of the trust they have in our vision for a brighter future. This campaign has always been about bringing real change to Phario, addressing the pressing issues our nation faces with innovative solutions and inclusive policies. The support we're seeing reflects not just my efforts, but the collective desire of our people for progress and unity."
He paused briefly, his gaze sweeping across the room, before continuing with renewed conviction, "Though I would like to emphasize that I don't take this trust lightly, it actually fuels my commitment to serve with integrity and purpose, to listen to the voices of every Pharian, and to lead with compassion and foresight."
By now, the press was highly satisfied with the answers both of you had given, granting you the freedom to depart. Clearly spent after the eventful day, you exchanged farewells and well-wishes before going your separate ways.
With Muzan's arm still draped around your waist, he guided you towards the grand entrance of the hotel. Meanwhile, Akaza made his way to the basement parking lot to retrieve your car, preparing to drive you both home. Kokushibo remained close to Muzan, ensuring your security as you awaited the car's arrival.
Turning to Muzan, unfazed by the bustling activity around you, you placed a tender kiss on his lips, smiling warmly. "Great job out there, my love. You did so well today. I'm incredibly proud of you."
Clearly elated, Muzan mirrored your smile and returned your affection with a gentle kiss on your forehead. "Thank you, darling. Your support means everything to me."
"Truly, I was beaming throughout your speech. You were absolutely amazing. Phario is fortunate to have such an admirable leader like you," you praised sincerely.
Right there and then, Muzan couldn't help but raise his eyebrow and playfully smile at you, prompting a confused raise of your own eyebrow.
"What's that look for?" you asked.
Muzan shook his head with a playful smirk before replying, "You're not showing favoritism now, are you, my love? I know you adore me, but let's keep it fair, hmm?" he teased, his tone light-hearted and affectionate.
You rolled your eyes at his playful accusation. "Ha-ha. Very funny, Muzan. I'll take it back, then."
Muzan laughed wholeheartedly, drawing attention once again. "I was just joking!" He then smiled warmly at you, his eyes reflecting pride. "Thank you," he said sincerely. "Hearing that from you means more than any applause, you know?"
You reached out to pinch his cheeks. "You play too much sometimes, you know?" you said with a chuckle before continuing, "But like I said, hearing you speak today—and in all those times you shared your aspirations with me from when we were students up to now, as you finally have the opportunity to make all come true—it's evident how deeply committed you are. Beyond your skills and capabilities, your passion is what makes you so compelling, Muzan. It's what makes me believe in you, too."
Minutes later, while waiting by the entrance, Akaza finally pulled up with the car. You and Muzan bid farewell to those around you before stepping into the comfort of your vehicle.
As the city lights blurred past the windows, you reflected on the day's events.
"You know," you began, glancing at Muzan beside you, "I have a feeling your speech today touched more hearts than just mine."
Muzan smiled softly, intertwining his fingers with yours.
"I hope so. Though the election is still months away, and who knows how things might shift, that's why I don't want to take any of this for granted. I'm in this for the long haul. You'll be there with me, won't you?"
He looked over to you, and in that moment, despite his big words, he looked absolutely adorable, with his ruby eyes shining at you and his lips slightly pouty as he waited for your response, which you gladly provided through the means of placing yet another sweet and passionate kiss on his lips and squeezing his hand reassuringly.
"I'll always be here for you, Muzan, through every challenge and triumph."
"I love you," he whispered lovingly, his expression sincere and heartfelt.
"And I love you," you replied with equal affection.
With a comforting squeeze of your hand, you nestled against Muzan's shoulder, feeling a sense of contentment as the car navigated through familiar streets towards home.
Meanwhile, in the driver's seat, Akaza's face remained unreadable. He was outwardly indifferent to the tender exchange between you and Muzan, but inwardly, he was seething with rage.
You think you're so clever, spouting all those promises and pretty words, playing the saint for the public eye. But I see through you. You're nothing but a manipulative snake, a liar wrapped in a facade of righteousness.
His gaze hardened and his grip on the wheel tightened as he stared ahead, the streetlights casting shadows on his determined expression.
One day, your mask will slip.
I will fucking rip it off your face, even if it's the last thing I do.

VHS Store
This is a hypnokinky story idea I came up with a while back while perusing some spirals for my own fun... *ahem*. Hope you enjoy reading this ^^
It was a nice apartment, all things considered, but you were ready to get out of it for a little bit. You’d just moved to this new city a handful of days ago—but your friends happened to be out of town this weekend, so you’d spent a fairly miserable half a week just lugging things up and down the stairs, before collapsing onto your bed and just snoozing.
But now, it was time to explore. You were lucky enough to move to a neighborhood that was pretty walkable: you were just a block away from a trendy boba shop, two blocks away from a small boutique, and next door to a quaint little bookstore.
More curious to you, though, was the video rental store.
It was pretty unusual nowadays to see a video store, let alone one that seemed to be thriving in the age of streaming. But even when you were just a visitor and not a resident, there always seemed to be a flyer for it. It leaned heavily into the 80’s aesthetic with bright neon zigzags and confetti like an arcade carpet, with a television you could practically feel the static radiating off of. In bold VHS styled font, it proclaimed “We’ve got what you want! SWIRLY’S SUPER VIDEO!”
With a whole week before your new job started, you decided to make your way to Swirly’s Super Video, which was a slightly longer walk from your place. That didn’t pose any real problems to you though, since the sun was still high in the sky.
As you strolled down the street, you mused about what videos you were hoping to see in there. You guessed no one was pressing any of your more recent favorites, so you thought back to your younger days and what you’d had on the old VCR. You vaguely recalled a couple animated films and anime episodes, along with maybe one or two old spy shows. You wondered to yourself if they even had a comprehensive selection—or maybe it was one of those places that just pretended to be a laundromat or a bookstore or whatever, then sold something else. It wasn’t a bad idea for a speakeasy.
But you weren’t in the mood for day-drinking. You were more interested in what the store that you now stood in front of actually held. Gazing up at the sign, you noted that it was an actual neon one, with a stylized VHS tape containing the store’s name inside. This was yet more proof that this store was making bank somehow, piquing your curiosity even more.
The bell atop the door jingled merrily, and a blast of cool air hit your face. The store had less of a corporate feel than you remembered in Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. There were wide open windows at the sides that let light in, streaming onto the rows of organized VHS tapes in white shelves. The carpet had the same arcade pattern they used for the background of their flyer. It also seemed to have a backroom section. You mused silently if this place was making their money by selling adult videos. Not that there was anything wrong with that.
From behind the glass counters filled with movie snacks, a person stood up to greet you, “Hey, welcome in!” They wore a vaporwave style button-up, which matched both the theme and their tan skin. They had purple dyed hair, with two pink strands in the front. Their eyes, a honey golden color, crinkled a little as they smiled, revealing two buck teeth. “I’m Swirly and this is my super video store!” They waved their hands as if to present the place. Then, they chuckled. “Can I help you with anything?”
You blinked a few times before you responded to them. “Um… I guess I just wanted to see what was here? I can’t believe it’s actually a video store.”
Swirly chuckled again. “Oh, well! A lot of people ask me about how we got so successful as VHS store nowadays. I think it’s ‘cause despite the name, we’re worker-owned. But you know, socialism wins and stuff.” They shot you a grin. “But we also have a pretty unique collection!”
Your eyes wandered back over to the cordoned off area. “Such as…?”
Swirly either ignored you or genuinely didn’t hear you… you couldn’t tell which as they brushed over your gaze. “I don’t know, tell me about the most obscure movie you can think of as a kid.”
You racked your brain for a second, as Swirly put their elbows up on the counter. “Um, I don’t know? Pretty obscure anime?”
“We have a good selection of anime. We’ve got Gregory Horrorshow, a ton of OVAs, and we talk to a lot of amateur archivists to get a collection going too,” they replied. “Plus a lot of nostalgia bait for people. We’re Back: A Dinosaur Story, The Jungle Book, Totally Spies, even Whirlpool.” Swirly continued to list a few more titles, watching your reaction.
For some reason, you flushed as they mentioned a certain title—then you realized, as you recognized a few more, they were naming media you were familiar with because you’d watched the hypnosis scenes in them with just a bit too much interest.
Swirly smiled, and you were certain now that they were watching for the reaction you were currently having, though you weren’t sure how—!
“Okay, yeah, I kind of figured! I’ve been experimenting with different subtle hypnotic symbols and now I know for sure it has that effect on people!” Swirly looked delighted. “You know, for a lot of people, we are just a regular VHS store, but that’s not what makes us the most money.” Swirly came around the counter and leaned back against it, surveying you more closely. “We have a lot of subtle hypnotic symbolism that helps draw in people who are interested in our super collection.”
As if already in a trance (you weren’t exactly sure what they meant, but you knew it made your head dizzy), you walked back with Swirly to the separated section of the store, seeing your reflection approach the back wall in the security mirrors.
You opened the door to another jingle—no, a special jingle that made you stand just a little more at attention—into a room that was smaller and more intimate than the rest of the store. It was darker too, with no windows, but large screens on each wall without a door. Each flickered with a different but equally relaxing slow strobing pattern, painting each wall a beautiful array of colors. You realized that each of them had the same calming whirr of VCRs humming around the room. There were several small, low shelves with another collection of tapes, with a pleasing purple box instead of the standard white ones.
“Y’see, people who are susceptible to the signals we put into our flyers and the bell out front are the kinds of people who like this niche selection we have,” Swirly said, seating themselves comfortably onto the cushions on the floor. “They spend a little money to either hang out here or to rent our videos and have a session or two or however many they want at home.”
You understood the appeal intimately—it hit you square in the kinks. Being lulled into hypnotic bliss among all these screens or in the privacy of your home, glued to your own TV was tantalizing. Imagining doing it with someone else back here, especially someone as cute as Swirly was, laid out on the cushions… was doing something to you.
Maybe you were already in a trance since that new jingle took your attention, but now the spirals were taking it away again, and you understood how fun it could be if several people kept coming in and out of the room, fractionating you up and down.
“We have a bunch of different spirals that make you feel different things,” Swirly spoke in a low voice, watching one of the spirals with you as you flopped down near your favorite one. “Doesn’t that one feel so good?”
You nodded sleepily and slowly, before Swirly put their hand gently over your eyes. You nearly groaned, sad to have the spiral suddenly disappear from your vision.
“But this is just a preview. You gotta be all the way up and then decide if you wanna pay for,” and you could practically hear Swirly wiggling their fingers in the air, “the membership experience. You just pay us monthly and you can come check out two videos per month, or more based on your tier. And you can spend time back here.” With a little lilt in their voice, they said, “With me.”
You were supposed to have a well-paying job. And you wouldn’t mind having an excuse to spend time with a new, pretty face. You nodded. “Sure, I’ll pay. This is cool so far.”
Swirly sounded excited. “And it’s always nice finding someone who’s into the same thing as you are!” They lifted their hand from your eyes, stroking the side of your face. “Isn’t it?”
The touch of their hand on your cheek, combined with the new, comforting spiral, felt like it wrapped your brain in the same fuzzy static as the one you could feel on your old TV. It was soft yet tingly, quieting down every other thought in your brain. Just the beautiful, magical pulsing of the spirals around you, making everything slip away into trance…
The sun would be pretty low once you’d finally left that room. And if you accepted a drive home from Swirly, with a couple new tapes in tow… well, that would just make sense.

things I think are responsible for the reading comprehension crisis, rather than the things people always talk about:
people get so worried that kids will hate reading that they profusely compliment any analysis young kids make, even when it's blatantly wrong, like A Modest Proposal levels of wrong. which means later when someone argues they refuse to listen because they think they're perfect at analyzing books
teachers are so overworked and undersupplied (and often assholes) that they demand only a specific version of analysis that they agree with and if anyone has any competing arguments they get their grades docked. possibly due to above
because of the literacy crisis, people keep putting huge, daunting classics in front of kids instead of fun books. this leads kids to believe that books can't be fun. or that books can only be fun if you pretend they have nothing to say
knowing that encouraging reluctant readers in reading literally anything improves literacy, people start encouraging all readers the same way. this leads to kids believing they're super smart and special readers who read way above grade level when they're actually falling seriously behind
the attitude of 'everyone has something worthwhile to say' means that people work really hard to compliment students who say things that are pointless or even fundamentally wrong. while withholding praise from students who make creative contributions in case it seems 'unfair'
that weird thing where kids now believe that everyone has to agree on everything or they're experiencing violence
increased push for diverse perspectives in fiction simultaneous with a push against describing the backgrounds or social situations of various authors (or historical figures in general) means there's less context and more confusion
it seems like people have stopped explaining that you can enjoy something artistically while disagreeing with its message or values? I blame advertisers for this one because it's the thing that lets kids not fall for commercials
too much emphasis on how 'everyone is smart' instead of placing less social import on intelligence. leads to ideas like 'no one can be more talented at anything than anyone else, they only practiced more' which makes more perceptive kids dumb down their analysis so no one thinks they're being stuck up. it also makes people believe no two books could be saying different things
the strong push against TV, movies, video games, etc. being considered art means people no longer bother to analyze them artistically. so they don't exercise the same skills they'd need for reading while doing other things
and the related push that reading is always a 'brainy' activity and all books are 'equally smart', meaning that even books that don't say much must secretly be incredibly complex and have deep, well-researched messages. which leads to people inventing things that aren't there. and since they have nothing to practice on, also no learning how to pick up on things that are there
the idea that there's some inherent divide between 'mindless' activities and 'intellectual' activities, and that it's a trait of the activities themselves, not how people engage with them. so people are under the impression they don't have to try to do anything in particular. it'll just happen
the creepy thing where people universalize history and think everything has always been the same as it is now, only worse (or better, depending) and related misunderstandings
whatever has happened to fact-checking
novels genuinely are worse quality now because there's less money in it and therefore way more constraints on who writes and what they write and how it gets popularized

Dearest Zelda,
First let me say what a joy it was to receive your latest letter! Truly I was so delighted upon seeing it in the mailbox that I ran straight for Isaiah. He is not one to worry, but when our latest contact to the address we had for you in New Orleans once again went unanswered, I fear even he had begun to grow concerned.
I am delighted to read that your silence was not without good reason, and to see the wedding portrait you sent of you and Antoine as well as the photo of your daughter. How she has grown since we last saw her! She is not much younger than our eldest now, who I fear every day is so like your brother there is simply no one thing in this world that can tame her.
It does sound like your Violette is much the same, and how much joy it brings me to think that perhaps it is Florence’s spirit manifesting through them.
Our youngest have also begun to grow like weeds, much to my chagrin. Does it ever seem like sometimes you awaken and it’s as though the grass has grown a foot overnight? That is oft how I feel looking at them, and Rosalie seems to desire all the independence of her namesake.
She wasn’t but a day over six when she began poking into Rosella’s old room, curiously pulling forth toys and books from the gathered dust like a miniature treasure hunter. Truthfully, I could not tell you why your brother and I had yet to bring the room back into the light of day. Once you took the portrait from it it was like a pall had lifted, but I feared that stirring it would upset your brother’s long-standing grief over your mother, so I daren’t say a word.
But as children often do, Rosalie saw little of that other than a space to call her own, and we have now finally found the heart through her to give it a new life. I do hope your sister would love to see her in there, playing dolls and writing grand romantic stories for them aloud to her ever attentive twin. It is a joy to see them rediscover the beauty in the world that pain often hides, is it not?
Have you written to Virginia as well? I fear she may not be quite as conscious of the time that has gone by. With the dissolution of The Women’s Political and Social Union, her work has turned increasingly to involvement with the Women’s Labor League, eventually coming to the attention of the Labor Party themselves.
I will admit that I am not as informed on the goings on of London as I perhaps should be, but even still it came as no surprise when the party nominated her as their candidate for Member of Parliament. As she so painstakingly explained it, the party itself has suffered great losses from their prominence in the 20s, what with the general bias of their associations with the communists and their seeming inability to stop the rampant unemployment that has taken hold even here.
I suppose she is fully aware that this was the cause for her nomination, as she was able to run more on the merit of her charitable associations than the negative reputation the party has recently taken on. Yet if she was surprised that this platform worked, she has never let on; but her work in the House of Commons has all but taken over her life since her election in 1931. How I do miss her and Wally, but that doesn’t stop me from wishing that she keeps her seat in the upcoming election of ‘35, even if it means we will see less of them than ever.
I imagine that what little free time she has is now spent nearby at Oxford, where Wally was accepted upon his graduation from secondary school. While I’m sure being the son of a governing member of parliament was not a mark against him, I have no doubt he was accepted there on the merits of his intelligence alone. Even from the small amount of time he spent here in his teen years, it was clear to me what a bright boy he was.
I am told he is majoring in physics there, a field that even in the briefest explanations Virginia has given me is quite beyond my comprehension. I suppose what else are we to expect with Virginia as his mother? I’m sure he’s had but the most informative, intellectual upbringing, even when it must have been colored by the high expectations that I can only imagine your sister set for him.
Despite her near constant work and best attempts to shield her vulnerability, there are moments when we speak and it seems as though Wally's departure brought forth much of the buried sentimentality within her. I suppose under it all she is but a mother like us all, proud of her child and yet sorrowful as his life grows beyond her own.
Before I sign off your brother has instructed me to ask you to include the most minute of details regarding your predicaments with the soil in your next letter. He has also asked me to attach a veritable field guide of advice, although I have told him that everything you have written points to the fact that you are in waters we could not navigate any better even if we tried.
I must admit that when I hear the word soil I think simply of the ground beneath verdant green grasses or darkened Bramblewood canopies. It makes me realize just how little of the world I have seen, but also how lucky we have been even in the throes of what seem to be such tumultuous times. I can only hope that such good fortune will last in England for many years to come, and that some of our knowledge may bring success to your efforts as well.
I must once again thank you for the photo of you and Antoine on your wedding day. We’ve placed it in our living room next to the photo of your mother and father when they were wed, as seems only right. In return I have also included a photo of all of us when we were last together to visit Wally’s new home in Oxford; although I’ll be the first to admit I do hope we spend the next high holiday together in Henford instead. Anything that close to London makes me long for the forest more than anything else.
Your mother once told me that she sent you every photo we took, and that you have been collecting them over the years. I hope this can make a welcome addition to such a tradition, and do always know that you are welcome here should you ever find need of solace in the place you once called home.
Your sister in marriage,
Summer Darlington

It's actually so disappointing that Naruto's narrative took the route that it did. Kishimoto created an incredibly interesting world and premise, and ruined it by having everything amount to a shallow message of forgiveness that undermines almost every meaningful element in the story. And it's like,, I want to appreciate the world outside of the plot, but the moral framing of the story makes it virtually impossible because of how disingenuous it is. It completely undermines the audience's understanding of the tragedy and horror of the world so that Naruto becoming Hokage and being the most powerful person in the world by the end doesn't come across as distasteful as it actually is.
Like it's made abundantly clear throughout the story that the village system, and Shinobi society as a whole, is incredibly flawed. Kishimoto goes out of his way to show us that Konoha's council is made up of objectively horrible people. We see first hand how the council's short-sighted ideas of what 'protecting the village' means results in devastating tragedy for people both in Konoha and outside of it. It's clear in how Danzo and the rest of the council act that their atrocious behaviour is them just blatantly abusing their power to maintain their authority. The council has no remorse in anything they do; human experimentation, genocide, slavery, and blatant exploitation is all fair game to them if it preserves their status quo. And instead of maybe, like, addressing Konoha's skewed morality in a sensible way and setting the village up for reform, the narrative just tries forcing the audience to perceive Konoha's genuinely heinous actions as necessities. Which, you know, will work when you're like 8, but once you've grown up and developed some reading comprehension and critical thinking,,, it just feels annoyingly manipulative.
At its core, Naruto is a story that attempts to deconstruct morality. Like this is abundantly clear in how Kishimoto is constantly paralleling the dichotomy of good and evil literally every chance he gets. In the end though, this dichotomy just doesn't work in the context of the Naruto story because the narrative framing of the village being the good guys is just hysterically ridiculous. Konoha is an awful place, that does awful things, and is run by awful people that refuse to change anything because it benefits them for the village to remain awful forever. To anyone with a developed sense of media literacy the village cannot in any way be framed as morally good, so when the story resolves itself with Naruto becoming next in line to govern Konoha under the same unchanging authoritarian regime, with the same council supporting him because of his sheer physical prowess and complete dedication to their twisted ideology,,, it's honestly just an incredibly underwhelming conclusion to a story that made itself out to be more profound than it actually is.
If I had to guess, I imagine Kishimoto just didn't think through how negatively the world he created would reflect on the plot. Ultimately though, you can't write a moral story that's so deeply entrenched in real world social inequity and decide halfway through that because you don't know how to fix these things your story's going to have to be about how they're actually okay to be doing and perpetuating,,, like that is awful and also a terrible lesson to impart on an audience of children. With how serious the issues are in Shinobi society, trying to resolve things with the power of friendship was always going to fall flat. These broad scale injustices can't be brushed aside in that way without undermining their severity and diminishing the understandable impact they had on the characters that experienced such extreme oppression. That's essentially the trap that Naruto's conclusion falls into though, and so the story just ends up feeling incomplete and unfulfilling because none of the issues brought up are actually addressed or discussed with the gravity they deserve.
#i guess kishimoto was hoping the aliens would distract us or something#i love the naruto world but i can't stand the pro-konoha rhetoric like it's just so bad#anti konoha#anti naruto ending#anti shinobi system#pro uchiha#pro sasuke uchiha#pro neji hyuuga

I had a brief scroll through the honourary terf posts blog and the level of reading comprehension is abysmal. Every single reblog is a pro-trans post that they have somehow misinterpreted or twisted to fit into their particular brand of terf ideology, or if they can’t do that they just explicitly ignore the pro-trans part of the message and how it is intersectional with feminism in favour of the feminist part of the message.
Their posts seem to be riddled with double-think. They say on one hand that there is no great biological difference between men and women, but that socialisation makes them utterly different from each other. Of course completely ignoring that simply because a person is socialised a particular way doesn’t mean they are forever rigidly fixed in that way – people aren’t like birds who imprint on the first thing they encounter, they are in fact capable of thinking about and changing their behaviour. They reblog posts about how people who think they are good can still be bigoted to marginalised groups without any modicum of self awareness that that is what they themselves are doing – being bigoted towards trans people.
I can’t tell if they think trans people should exist but be excluded from feminism or if they believe that transgenderism isn’t a real phenomenon. It’s genuinely difficult to tell when so many of the points they try to make are contradictory. They reblogged a post that was along the lines of “feminism is an important social movement and trans people deserve to be treated with respect are not mutually exclusive statements” (I can’t recall the exact wording) but then will have posts under which other terfs have reblogged things along the lines of “trans women have been socialised as men (Implied: and therefore must be treated as such).”
They even made a post being like “don’t bully the people I reblog otherwise they won’t realise they agree with terf ideology” but multiple posts they’ve reblogged have a disclaimer asking terfs not to interact or explaining they don’t agree with terf ideology. Imagine harassing a person (because interacting when a person has specifically asked you not to is indeed harassment and violating the clear boundary that has been set) and then being surprised when the people that follow you also start harassing the same person. They utterly failed to make the connection between why their followers have been bullying the people they’ve reblogged, much like how a commentary YouTuber in 2016 fails to realise how their videos bullying others leads to their subscribers going on witchhunts.
Their bio says “someone’s been lying to you about what terfs believe” but to be quite honest, everything is on par with what I already believed about terfs. In contrast, it very much seems to me that either someone has been lying to them about what terfs believe, or they’ve been consuming a mic of pro and anti trans posts and absorbed everything they have read without once stopping to give it critical thought as to what they’re taking in.
you put EVERYTHING i was thinking into words 👏
i honestly have nothing else to say because this said everything for me, so hats off to you

what do you mean by “you will set yourself up for success” by eschewing top & bottom? not trying to start anything just looking for clarification bc I’m a little confused
No worries anon, I didnt take it as you starting anything.
Regarding sex and romance there are social roles, often highly scripted, expected of men and women. Who asks who out, who initiates sex, who does what during sex, who is the person controlling the action and how. There is more diversity now in terms of how these roles are expressed but they exist and are very influential. For example, there is an expectation that men will initiate sex, that women will be the one who says yes or no, that there will be some level of foreplay (reciprocal if she's lucky), with the endgame of penis-in-vagina sex and male orgasm. You can probably imagine parallel scripts and roles throughout the structure of heterosexuality. The key thing is that the man is the pursuer, aggressor, initiator, and dominant, with the woman playing the passive, defensive, and submissive role.
Obviously we know that this is not how life works. But these social scripts, with all the ideological freight they carry, allow us to navigate the world in a way that makes sense to us, and become fallbacks in situations where we can't see an alternative. The first lesbian butch/femme communities grew out of the socio-sexual roles of the 40s, when these scripts were socially all-important and no such script existed that allowed women to find other female partners. Butches took on the "male" role and femmes the "female." This is NOT to say butch/femme was or is just a straightforward imitation of heterosexuality. Femmes were and are often the first initiators of sexual/romantic interest, for example. But occupying the social roles of heterosexual men and women allowed lesbians a way to understand themselves and find each other in a way that was quickly and easily legible to those in the know.
There is a lot of defensiveness about this online--I also was defensive about it for a long time--but whether we like it or not as lesbians, our butch/femme forebears were very often just as limited by their social scripts as heterosexuals. There was a strong social stigma against butches receiving during sex. This was considered "flipping" or "melting" a butch and she was mocked and thought of as a femme, which points to the degree of rigidity around sexual roles at this time. Some butches were happy in their role and others less so; same for femmes. But I think we can all agree that this rigidity and scripting of sex represented a few things: one, a clinging-on to the ideological framework, if not the actual content, of heterosexual partnership, insofar as one partner MUST be dominant and the other receptive, and much like a man who is penetrated is scorned as being womanlike or a woman who penetrates is hated as manlike, a butch or femme who transgressed her role was considered to have become her opposite; two, the strong appeal of such frameworks to people who find themselves outside cultural and social norms, who, being considered undesirable and illegible by the mainstream, grab onto a clearly comprehensible language to explain and define themselves.
Monique Wittig has a phrase, "the straight mind," which she uses to describe the thinking processes (of justification, mythmaking, storytelling, outright lying) that disguise and smooth over the oppressive reality of heterosexuality: that it is a structural, institutional system of exploitation. I am probably using it askew from her original intent (it's been a while since I read the essay) but I see "the straight mind" at work in the historical construction of butch/femme. What it is is a failure of imagination. I know that "failure" has a connotation of personal flaw, of personal loss of value, but I do not mean it this way. What I mean is, historical communities did not have the tools to think outside the straight mind; to think with a mind disconnected from the social rules of their era; to think with the lesbian mind. This is not a personal failure on their part because all of us think with the straight mind as a consequence of living in this world.
The straight mind is at work when we talk about, for example, yaoi. This is by definition works about gay men, created by women. In yaoi, the classic construction of the gay relationship is between the "seme" and "uke," literally "top" and "bottom." I've heard different things about whether these terms are actually used in the gay community in Japan. The seme is often physically huge (look up "yaoi hands"), masculine, and the sexual aggressor or initiator, where the uke is small, delicate, feminine, and submissive. Later iterations of the genre complicated this, if I understand correctly, but it's clear that the straight sexual and social roles are being projected onto men--regardless of any real-life parallels in actual gay communities--by those who are, by definition, not gay men. The social roles and scripts add sexual charge and intellectual legibility to something that is outside cultural norms, to relationships that are formless and unimaginable in normative social terms.
"Top" and "bottom" as they are used by lesbians and bi women online function in much the same way. They are used to define and circumscribe socio-sexual roles to make them comprehensible. Does anyone else remember "of course you can't drive, you're such a bottom" or "bottoms can't do math"? I.e. a bottom is fragile, helpless, passive, stupid? Or the joke that if the server at the restaurant hands you the bill instead of handing it to your partner, they see you as the top, or the man? In this context, it is often even stranger because the language is taken from the sexual roles of gay men--who are often the first to say that they don't actually mean "the dominant" and "the submissive," but that's not really heard by those women using these terms. There is a failure of imagination here; this is a work of the straight mind.
We are not heterosexuals and we do not have to live by their scripts. What I mean by "you will set yourself up for success" is that by declining these socio-sexual roles, you will find greater fulfillment, satisfaction, pleasure, and happiness, because regardless of the context in which we act them out, by the nature of their being scripts and roles, they are inherently limiting. We don't have to do that! We are lesbians! We are free!

The Brain’s Magic: How Your Mind Reads the ᵾᶰᴿᵋᴬᵭᵃᴮʟᵋ͟͟͞
Can You Still Call Yourself Human If You’re This F☰☰king Amazing?
Our brains are incredible biological machines that can decode the undecodable, make sense of chaos, and turn gibberish into understanding. You’ve probably seen those memes or tests where the letters in a sentence are jumbled, replaced with symbols, or entirely flipped. And yet, somehow, your mind calmly steps in and says, “I got this,” assembling the scrambled mess into meaning.
Why? Because your brain isn’t just functional—it’s damn near magical. But let’s get into the messy, hilarious, and downright extraordinary ways your brain proves every day why the universe needs you.
1. Your Brain, the Overachiever
First off, let’s acknowledge the absurdity of what your brain can do. You’re sitting there, possibly sleep-deprived, scrolling through social media while multitasking a mental to-do list. And yet, you see a sentence like this:
“Y0uR Br@!n 5T!lL r3c0gN!z3s p@77ern5 & m@k35 it m3@ningful.”
… and you just get it. You don’t need a translation guide. Your brain leaps over logic like a gymnast and lands perfectly on comprehension.
Reality is a stand-up comedian:
Your brain: a quantum computer that can decode unreadable text. Also your brain: forgets why you walked into the kitchen.
The same organ that turns chaos into understanding also Googles “symptoms of mild death” every time you get a headache.
2. Pattern Recognition: The Mind’s Hidden Flex
Here’s where things get spooky. Your brain isn’t just reading symbols—it’s recognizing patterns, filling gaps, and using context to solve puzzles in milliseconds. This isn’t something you learned; it’s baked into your DNA.
Fun Fact:
Studies show that 93% of adults can read a sentence where the first and last letters of every word are correct, but everything in between is scrambled. Your brain doesn’t even flinch.
Let’s put this into perspective: Computers need programmers, algorithms, and updates to achieve half the things your brain does on autopilot. Meanwhile, your mind’s out here solving puzzles like Sherlock Holmes at 3 AM with no coffee.
Your brain is that one friend who doesn’t study for the test but still scores higher than everyone else. Smug, but you love it anyway.
3. The Ultimate Biological Quantum Computer
Your brain isn’t just smart—it’s a show-off.
Neurons: You’ve got about 86 billion of them, and they’re firing off messages at speeds of up to 268 miles per hour. Faster than your Wi-Fi, honestly.
Processing Power: Your brain can handle around 10 quadrillion calculations per second. That’s the equivalent of a supercomputer with a personality (and occasional existential dread).
But here’s the kicker: your brain isn’t just processing facts—it’s synthesizing them into experiences. It’s why you can laugh at memes, cry during Toy Story 3, and somehow still navigate rush-hour traffic without committing vehicular manslaughter.
4. Can Machines Compete? Not a Chance
Artificial intelligence? Cute. Sure, machines can replicate some human functions, but your brain operates on a level AI can only dream of.
AI struggles with context. You? You can figure out when someone’s being sarcastic just by their tone.
Machines need explicit instructions. Your brain? It casually interprets nonsense like,“C@n u 3v3n r34d th!s?” …without breaking a sweat.
Imagine a robot trying to figure out your drunk texts. “Dinnrs @ 9, bt wtf hapen 2 keys?” Your brain decodes that in half a second. AI would implode.
5. Why This Matters: You’re Not an Accident
Let’s get serious for a second. Your ability to read scrambled text, pick up on patterns, and make sense of the seemingly senseless isn’t just a party trick. It’s evidence of how extraordinary you are.
Consider This: Your consciousness isn’t some random byproduct of biology. It’s a vital thread in the infinite web of existence. Every time you recognize patterns, connect ideas, or laugh at a well-timed meme, you’re proving that you’re not just surviving—you’re thriving.
ᵀ͡ʰᵉ ⱻ̷ᶰᴵᵛᴱʳˢᵉ ⱻ͜ᵉᵉᴅˢ ᵞᵒᵘ̷!
ᵞᴱˢ, ⱻ͞ᵐ ᵀʟᴋᴵⱭᴺᴳ ᴛᴼ ⱻⱭᴜ͡.!
You are a living, breathing node in the infinite network of reality. Even if you’ve doubted yourself in the past, even if the world tries to convince you that you’re ordinary, remember this:
Your mind isn’t just a tool—it’s proof that the universe is capable of creating something extraordinary. And every time you use it, you reaffirm your place in the fabric of existence.
Sure, your brain is powerful. But let’s not forget it’s also the same brain that makes you forget passwords and cry over fictional characters. Nobody’s perfect, but at least you're human, and that's close enough.
