the background/before:

mocha was working on a little story and xe said we could be in it! so obviously me and my friends signed up for the fun, not really expecting anything, the story was called "The Traumatized Cup", thats when we first meet him.

In one of the chapter mocha had introduced rubix, at first i didnt really think much about him, i was just aware of his presence, i do notice him and mocha started to become friends and i thought that was great :)

It's still difficult for me to understand these kind of grifters that have no problem throwing their own people under the bus as long as they're getting money and attention. The other day I stumbled upon this rather popular channel by a black guy who identifies as a conservative, and his whole motiff is literally dunking on black people and making fun of them on videos where they're acting "ghetto" or whatever, like he literally reviews videos of black people from insta or tiktok (or sometimes the news) where they're "acting entitled", or "stupid", or "pulling the race card", as he claims. And his whole comment section is (usually) white conservatives praising him for being so different, or thanking him for calling out other black people, and just making fun of the subject in the video. You also see a lot of comments like "I'm a black man/woman and I agree black people are too entitled/our culture is terrible". Sometimes you also see comments in the vein of "I'm a native american and we've never acted this way; i don't know why black people are like this." As if white conservatives don't hate them too, only when they're also dunking on black people.

In a similar vein, this also reminds me of this black pastor who's also extremely critical of black culture and think racism against black people doesn't exist. He invites to his show only very young black activists so he can dunk on them. Anyways, he's also very homophobic and rather misogynistic, but I found out he's actually been accused by some white men of sleeping with them while keeping it on the down low. Wouldn't surprise if it's true, as he has said that white men are smarter than black men, which could simply be born out of his desire towards white men, coupled with low self esteem and self hatred due to being gay and a pastor. Side b Christians are.much more understanding towards gay people, but it seems the closeted ones are much more hateful towards homosexuals, but also seem much more likely to end up engaging in homosexual acts themselves. And when they're caught, it's never something inocent like being seen holding hands with a man, it's always something degenerate like being caught in an orgy or raping a much younger (sometimes underage) male prostitute (this pastor i mentioned apparently has been accused by some white men of sexually harassing them, though i don't remember well so take this info with a grain of salt).

why? it's because of the screaming. my SPD is very audio-focused, so it can induce pain and headaches, possibly even migranes. the uh. occasional auditory hallucinations i get of women screaming also don't help.

Here are some things you could watch. I'm really, really sorry in advance if any of these have triggering content for your sensory issues. I tried my best to make sure they were all accessible, hopefully I did alright.

For found footage horror films, immediately The Blair Witch Project comes to mind, but I gave that a 4/10 lmao. Good to watch for the experience of having watched it though. Not much screaming, but I do distinctly remember once scene of one of the characters screaming "PLEASE HELP US" and the main character (who is a woman) screaming for another character near the end. No straight screaming as I recall, but scream-yelling.

I've heard great things about Lake Mungo, which apparently has no jumpscares, and is a found footage-style psychological horror mockumentary that I really need to watch.

Ringu- the original Japanese version of The Ring- doesn't really have the screams or as many jumpscares as the American adaptation, but it's pretty tense regardless. If you like horses, I would prefer this version over the American one. Also if you have sensory processing disorder. It doesn't really rely on a lot of the hella discomforting sound design of the American adaptation, which is def scarier, but god, Sadako is like 10x more nightmare fuel than Samara, even if I ultimately like the execution of Samara's character a lot more. Just watching the original Ringu, Sadako is still a good character, I just think her story got convoluted later on. The TV scene in the og too is horrific. I love it

Candyman is widely considered pretty good, but I've heard people say its themes of racism are tone deaf at times. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm familiar with it. Lacks jumpscares, should be good on sensory problems, bc it's my understanding there's not much meant to elicit abject fear, but you may have to be careful.

I love The Walten Files, but given your sensory issues, I wouldn't recommend it unless you truly believed you could handle a lot of bad sensory input. If that ever happens, check it out. If not, avoid it.

However, a similar but much lighter seeming ARG called Welcome Home may be up your alley, currently it lacks any jumpscares or similar shocking noises. It's like Poppy Playtime but actually good.

Serial Experiments Lain is a good, ominous slow-burn psychological horror anime that lacks any potentially harmful sounds. Another is more gory and dark, but doesn't have a lot of loud noises or screaming either.

Local 58 is a well known analog horror that kind of checks the EAS scenario box, and lacks any jumpscares, but is very eerie and dark. Gemini Home Entertainment is much more so, but also has jumpscares as I've heard, so while I'm not familiar with that one I suggest you exercise caution. Local 58 I have seen and it's pretty good and should be safe for you and your SPD.

UrbanSpook has no audio jumpscares, but a lot of visual ones. Pretty good body horror stuff too.

I also tentatively recommend Petscop. Tentatively because it has absolutely zero SPD triggers, but its themes heavily revolve around child abuse, childhood trauma, esp parental abuse, and some readings even involve transphobia and ableism. Darker interpretations can also gather themes of CSA. That one is all up to how you read it (aside from the very explicit child abuse themes) so be careful for mental health reasons.

(I also very tentatively recommend it because I don't like recommending Petscop to people. It's a very personal comfort for me and I don't like giving it out to just anyone as a recommendation.)

oh this is fun. i'd been avoiding any mention of it for years too because of the Discourse Hell surrounding it and at this point I'm mostly convinced that Vvienne Mdrano is a Messy Person on the Discourse Website with a cringey artistic fixation. it's all tumblr drama.

watched the show myself first, didn't find it objectionable, and then went looking for what everybody was so mad about. I found this Mary Sue article about it then cruised around the hzbin hate tags. the primary issues floating around with hzbin htel are:

all the gay characters are in hell which they say implies gay people deserve to be in hell. [dismissed based on the premise of the show, which is that heaven's rules for paradise are arbitrary and people in hell are still good/redeemable]

Angel and p much everything about them. most of these complaints are about good/bad representation (off to a great start lmao) and whether it's offensive that Angel is an addict who likes sex but is still exploited. just every ounce of sex work discourse possible transposed onto a fictional character. [from what i've seen, actual sex workers seem to like Angel Dust just fine, so again whatever imo.]

Medran0 has had a tumblr blog for the entire development history and on that blog did a few major things that really pissed people off.

[1] origin of the sexual predator stuff. she drew one of her own characters in a SFW but sexy pose with a snake. bad because the character was a minor. apparently the fan wiki says the character is 18. also drew a student/teacher relationship. [personally i just do not give a fuck about any of it.]

[2] origin of transphobia. she drew fanart of blair white after trump was elected. that whole bit is genuinely batshit. said she had a mental breakdown and convinced herself she didn't understand politics and needed to hear other perspectives. started watching blair white, thought she was pretty, and drew her. [i don't like this and think it's deeply bizarre but i also find it hilarious and existentially fitting that she describes her temporary appreciation of blair white as a serious mental breakdown and the worst time of her life. she has apologized and hasn't done anything like it since. mostly i see why her creative fixation is a show about redeeming people who are genuinely fucked in the head and do bad things in that headspace. and i also see why this did not end her career as many people on the webbed site seem to wish it did.]

[3] plagiarism stuff.

(a) she traced designs from larger projects and posted them. didn't make money off them and the things that appear in any Produced Work are pretty boilerplate animation homages. [imo this complaint is mostly the lingering effect of 15 yr olds not knowing how anything works]

(b) bought some character designs off of an artist/ex-friend and then the relationship soured. contract didn't require credit after she bought them so she removed the name of the ex-friend from her stuff. ex-friend tried to launch a lawsuit about it which was summarily dismissed and she stopped using the character design. medran0 alleges the friend was abusive. [i dont have an opinion on this and won't be forming one.]

4. pure cringe.

this is something my friend said and it's the epitome of it. most accurate comment on the show i've seen so far. it's a show that's directed STRAIGHT at those exact same depressed teens except they're adults now with different, bigger problems and still hoping it will get better. the humor and the themes are aged up, but not the emotional core or aesthetic. and i think that's fair. it hasn't gotten better for everyone and while I'm not in that place anymore and it doesn't Hit Me In My Feels, i get why it does for others.

Ok, first off this is a great question. Second, I don't really know how to answer it sjdkahdj so this is more of a list of headcanons (?) of the show as it is (mostly) but adding Vanessa at points that I feel her pov would have been great or the dynamics had potential to be more interesting with her having a more prominent role also some wishful thinking because who cares

the show kinda had dan go to vanessa and serena to nate post breakup, but i think i would highligh this a lot more, nate and dan are bros, vanessa and serena still get their friendship moments à la age of dissonance, and there's a little bit of awkwardness with nate and vanessa dating, while dan and serena are there like ._.

Nate has money problems in season 2, so we get more Vanessa + Humphreys + Nate plots

I don't have a lot of ideas here but Vanessa's sister actually exists and interacts with the characters lmao

In s2-3 Blair and Vanessa have their moments of friendship, but I think it would have been interesting to see Vanessa, learning to manage the social aspect of college, and she is well liked, she starts becoming more popular without even realizing it. So now you get her family disapproving over college + Blair having to deal with Vanessa (and Dan) be more popular than her. I'm not a big fan of Enough about Eve, but that's kind of the dynamic, they are rivals, but while they are living in the same building and sharing classes, they learn a little bit about each other's lives

Blair is dealing with Cyrus and Aaron joining her family, meanwhile Vanessa's relationship to her family gets worse as she spends time in school which her family disapproves. Again there's a lot of potential for Blair/Vanessa parallels this season

Unlike Serena, Nate and even Dan (rip), Vanessa is not one to keep her opinions, so even tho she doesn't like Blair, she still talks to her about 🪑, and about how she should dump him

On that same note, Vanessa tries to comfort Jenny, and has a more of a big sister dynamic with her, and maybe even lets her stay with her when she is fighting with Rufus

Vanessa teaming up with Blair and Eric during season 3 while trying to stop Jenny's reign, meanwhile Blair and Vanessa working as reluctant allies

We have 2x19 weekend with the VanderBilts and thanksgiving "mmm whatcha say" scene, now I offer you, Vanessa's birthday dinner at the Humphrey's loft with the Abrams meeting Nate, and Serena. chaos ensues

Blair slowly starts adapting to college (and doesn't transfer because i say so), and slowly starts to consider both Dan and Vanessa friends (but she won't admit it or say it out loud); in general Blair and Vanessa have a similar dynamic to s2 dair, where they learn to tolerate each other for the sake of peace

Once the main college drama takes a step back, Serena and Vanessa start hanging out a lot more… before realizing that the reason they are hanging out more is because, Dan and Blair are suddenly hanging out a lot without telling them

Now we have the Pink Party but make it The One where everbody finds out™. We cut Charlie/Ivy of this plot and now we got Serena and Vanessa suspecting that Dan and Blair are having an affair and spying on them, the party plays out the same, except now, the confrontation at the end of the party is a lot more messy:

Serena is hurt because Dan and Blair are having a relationship without her, that as Blair puts it has "things that we coulnd't never do with you", her self doubt comes back in and her relationship with dan and blair is damaged

Vanessa is hurt for the same reason but it's the flipside of that, Dan and Blair like to watch movies, discuss literature, etc, things that SHE used to do with Dan; she is dan's best friend, she used to watch movies, tv and discuss things with her, they used to make fun of blair together!, and now he is pulling away from her while hanging out with the enemy™

Vanessa confronts Dan about hanging out with Blair of all people, Blair hears this, and we get a different dynamic: Blair gets hurt, because she actually started to consider Vanessa a friend, but apparently Vanessa doesn't (something like dair's "i stupidly thought that this fake friendship might be real" moment) and now it's Vanessa's turn to self reflect on the way she sees Blair :)

Assuming Jenny leaves in the same way as she does in canon, Vanessa would be a good way to deal with the Jenny + Dair issue. Vanessa's resistence to being friends with Blair and to Dan dating her might come from resenting how the s3 situation was handled, since Vanessa was really close to Jenny. So there's an opportunity to have Blair actually express her regrets over that to Dan and Vanessa.

Vanessa and Serena stay together to comfort each other over Dair being a thing. They both help with each other's self doubts, they start going to the movies! making art! just hanging out! and this helps Serena to realize her value in these areas and now we set the stage for Serena to choose a carreer/work/or thing to do aside being someone's wife and the It girl. And Vanessa starts feeling like maybe she belongs more into the group as she and Blair solve their issues, Dan starts hanging out with her again and her relationship to Serena becomes stronger

Since she remains a main part of the group, there's also the possibilities of having Serena and Vanessa being friends and then in season 5 adding angst by having the Vanessa/Nate/Serena love triangle while Serena moves on from Dan

While Dan is The Outsider of the show, after Rufus and Lily get married, money is a lot less of an issue, so Vanessa would be the character that continues to confront the rich characters. And we could also add the tension of Vanessa and Dan growing apart now that Dan is fitting in a lot more and doesn't have the same problems and perspectives he used to have

Ivy kinda comes as a Jenny/Vanessa replacement, so having Vanessa as a main, kinda allows Ivy's existence to be even more useless, so we can also take her out lol

Since Vanessa is more of a presence, regardless of if they stay together or break up, Nate now has someone who is constantly challenging him so he questions his decisions a lot more and never joins the Spectator amen 😌

This is waaaay too optimistic lmao but Vanessa seems to be a lot more lgbt… so i like to think that having her and her sister/family have a stronger presence brings a little bit more queerness that is not "diversity win! the r*pist is bisexual!". I mean even Vanessa just hanging out with Eric would be great

I know the s3 threesome is cursed, but again, Vanessa has the only wlw kiss (as far as i can remember), we could explore this in a more serious way 👀 and have a main character be canonically queer (i'm not counting eric as main here)

I've heard people say that Vanessa is useless in the show, but the thing is that she is the character that directly opposes the UES way of thinking. The Humphreys tend to either fully become part of the UES (marrying Lily, Dan's whole Inside deal, Jenny's acceptance of Constance's politics, Rufus and Dan's desire to go to an ivy league, etc) or just quietly disagreeing with it (making comments, pointing out how messed up some things are, or just going back to Brooklyn). Vanessa offers a more proactive take when interacting with the UES, she confronts the Humphrey's non existent version of the elite and represents their world before joining it. That's why the writers didn't know what to do with her once they decided to commit to the more cynical view

The point about teen dramas and the problem with reality ensuing past high school got me thinking… In the context of Gossip Girl, what do you think would have been more plausible/realistic post-high school storylines for the characters? Because obviously in the OG show things got fucking WILD lmao. I do wonder if without the writers strike/the shift towards Chuck/Chair it might have been possible to keep things at least tonally consistent with season one post-high school, or if it’s something they would have struggled with anyway. I do feel like it’s less implausible for the characters to have more of their dreams fulfilled/better life outcomes on a show like Gossip Girl if only because of the extreme wealth inherent to the premise, but they definitely stretched the pretty generous suspension of disbelief I was already giving them lol

First of all, yes I agree, the elite kids of the Upper East Side are going to have a better chance at their dreams then the lower/middle class kids of Lima, Ohio. (That being said, you're right, GG still pushed it far beyond any rational suspension of disbelief)

-Okay, let's say Bart still dies. Chuck inheriting his shares - sure, totally plausible. Chuck getting to run the company at 18? Fuck no! Chuck would have to go to undergrad and probably have to get a MBA as well, and then work his way up the C-suite a la Kendall Roy before finally getting the keys to the castle in his 30s or so.

-Blair also would have to complete college (and she is so the type to go to grad school too let's be real) before landing any sort of dream job she would want. I can definitely see her working her way up the ladder at Vogue and taking over for Anna Wintour one day, but that would take years, if not decades of work.

-As followers of the blog know, Spectator!Nate is not my Nate! It's not even just about him getting handed a newspaper at 20, the Nate of s1-4 had no interest in journalism whatsoever or wearing a suit every day of his life. Anyway, I could see a world where Nate just kinda coasts through college, and then lives off his trust fund or something while he figures out what he actually wants to do. (I am partial to social worker!Nate but I do think it would take him a lot of character development that the show would be uninterested in doing to get him to that point).

-I mean this is in s1, but Dan getting published in the New Yorker at 16? Come on now. Dan getting a book published at 20 somehow without his consent? Also, come on now. I can see Dan completing undergrad then getting his MFA, and then getting a literary agent in his mid-20s or so, through Lily connections or professor connections or something.

-While Serena actually somehow has the most realistic path of all of them (production assisting /publicity don't require college degrees, plus Serena already had connections and the It Girl status), I still think she is someone who four years of college would do a lot of good. So I would have her graduate college first, before then moving out to LA and getting that PA job, and working her way up the ladder to producer or something that way.

Basically, I think they should've stuck with the college storylines! And, yeah, I think a big reason of why they didn't is because of Chuck and his mainpain and his whole "I'm gonna be a businessman at 18" nonsense.

evening is the preference, but she doesn’t mind the afternoon either. the most social aspects of the job are her favorite, so nisa likes busier shifts, as she genuinely enjoys talking to customers and giving recommendations. she’s probably pretty decent at it, too. high traffic shifts also go by really fast, which nisa also appreciates. she’d rather have customers to sell to than sit around and do nothing while the hours drag on by. however, when she’s on the evening shift she will absolutely be trying to convince whoever’s on shift with her to cut out as close to 8 as possible, cleanup be damned.

who are your muse’s top 3 favorite people to work with? 

SLOANE — one might think that living with sloane and also spending a lot of time with her doing other things would make nisa sick of her, but that is simply not the case! they have some similar tastes in music, and they both have a tendency to slack off by way of just having a little goss. like sloane is literally nisa’s wife. AND she can bum rides off of her.

KC — kc is fun! kc is a sweetie! he plays fun music and dances with nisa when the store’s slow! kc makes work not feel so much like work, mainly because i doubt they do much work, but i digress. they seem to have a similar style at work, so like the customers that come in during their shift love them! their coworkers that have to open the next morning and pick up all their slack from simply not engaging in any of the practical tasks… not so much, but that’s their problem. AND she can bum rides off of him.

WES — wes is just a nice change of pace! he’s smart, he’s capable, and he works hard, which makes a pretty decent coworker for nisa. they have a fun little back and forth, and idk i feel like they could turn their work tasks into little competitions, which is one of the only ways they’re bearable for her. also she dated an ivy league business major, so she’s basically immune to his brand of condescension. AND she can bum rides off of him.

who does your muse not like to work with? 

KEM — given that nisa likes the coworkers who she can kind of bounce off of the best, she doesn’t really like working with kem because like… what are they gonna talk about LMAO.. and, of course, she also has the petty little grudges that she holds against poor kem. he’s one of the least hatable men of all time so she doesn’t curse the scheduling gods or whatever when they have a shift together, she probably just kinda has a little eye roll.

CHASE — chase bounces between straight up ignoring nisa and being a little.. shall we say antagonistic towards her, and those are nisa’s least favorite ways to be interacted with. she doesn’t mind working with him quite as much as she could, because she takes some pleasure in getting under his skin, but still, it’s not fun to have a coworker who acts like you can’t do shit. even when you’re actively leaning into this idea that you don’t do shit. nisa simply does not vibe with this man. 

BLAIR — going strictly on the criteria of being excited to see their names on the schedule together, blair would be one of nisa’s favorite people to work with. bitch may or may not get butterflies at the thought of being around her. that being said, the actual being around her is less ideal. nisa doesn’t really know how to act around her, or what to do, so she just kind of avoids any real interaction, which is the exact opposite of what she wants. but alas that’s where we’re at.

what is in your muse’s locker?

nisa’s locker used to operate as like.. the work equivalent of the top of a dresser. she would throw stuff in there and then forget about it. it’s where nisa’s possessions would go to die. she had multiple lipsticks/lip glosses, a travel size spray bottle AND a roller of her favorite perfume, a brush, like six loose tampons, half a pack of bobby pins, an eyeliner pencil, three packs of gum at varying stages of empty, a lighter, a compact mirror (cracked), two tubes of her favorite mascara, a hat and scarf, three paperbacks (if beale street could talk, play it as it lays, carrie), an extra pair of headphones, loose bills and change, a couple of claw clips, and hm.. three shades of nail polish. she would occasionally forget her whole purse in there if she wasn’t going home after work, which is how she got stolen from. 

after this, nisa stopped keeping anything in her locker. although most of the shit she kept in there was junk no one else would want, nisa got in the habit of keeping it empty so she wouldn’t get so comfortable just leaving it there. it’s where her purse and jacket go, and those leave with her at the end of her shift. if she brings in any of the other stuff, she makes sure it’s in her purse when she leaves!

she walks! she tried to hack the buses at first, but gave up on that when she realized it was a lost cause. nisa and sloane’s apartment is a bit of a walk, but bitch doesn’t have her license, so what else can she do? that being said, if she has a shift with someone with a car, she will absolutely be begging them for rides.

tbh calling these a top 3 is kind of misleading… the albums she gravitates towards changes fairly frequently, as her taste is varied and she likes to constantly expand what she listens to. so these are probably more like.. current faves to play at work.

hard core (lil kim) — can we get a rap moment in here? the funk samples, the raunchy lyrics, lil kim’s attitude.. it’s just a grand ole time! idk how much customers or perhaps jennifer would appreciate the lyrics on this thing, but nisa says rip to them but i’m built different. it’s bold, hilarious filth, and she loves it!

these are my girls!! they're part of a thrash metal band called Casket Creature. Eventually the singer Jess steps down and a new vocalist named Courtney (second image) joins.

the general idea for them is that while dethklok is still a baby band (before Toki joins up) Casket Creature is a bigger/more popular band that gives Dethklok a running start by asking them to be their opener on a tour. Jess is an early member of the line of Nathan’s “crazy ex-girlfriends” that he seems to have a real problem with in the show.

Trinity is my favorite, haha. She’s a Ukrainian guitarist set up to be a foil to Skwisgaar. At that early point Skwisgaar is still really arrogant, but then he meets this lady guitarist who, while not a technical prodigy shredder like he is, is still more successful and he’s like “???? You are woman. You cannot shred as hard as me. Yet you are signed and I am not?? Explain yourself, witch,” and she just tells him, “��ука. fucking learn how to take pointers and write your songs down and actually cooperate with your band as a team. your rhythm guitarist is there to support your lead, not rob you of a spotlight.” and they become really close friends after roasting the hell out of each other

(DAN=RORY I don't make the rules 🤷‍♀️) I'm trying to figure out the circumstances of their first encounter now and all I'm coming up with is Dan Dan Dan because it has to be Dan, right? He has to be the initial string connecting them, right? Okay so, Rory and Dan meet while Dan's promoting his book or something (well, we HAVE to fix the mess that is s5 sOmEhoW and if Nate's going to date ;) someone else, Dan has to be with Blair in this au because I can't handle any more of pining!Dan if I tried ), they bond (well duh) and Nate just walks in on their big gifted kid burnout talk(TM) one day in the loft, stands there like 🤔 for a little bit and goes: Sooo, where's the ice cream, there's gotta be some comfort ice cream when this kind of thing happens, right? But like... the relationship relationship would include (these are going to be shamelessly self indulgent headcanons with little to no meta because my brain's incapable of making up layered crossover scenarios rn, adding that to my wip ideas tho):

1. sweater/scarf sharing (Dan knits these for Rory/Nate as gifts Mrs. Weasley style, just... nowhere near that level of skill LMAO, they're all matching for Christmas AND IT'S HORRIBLE but still kinda cute anyways, Dan is an inevitable aspect of this equation obviously, wHat elSe diD yOu thinNk, huh?????🧐)

2. pre-relationship stuff would've mainly consisted of looooong late night talks (to quote ✨Moi✨: "if it's not built on friendship then I'm sorry but I don't want it"), majorly about their privilege and Nate would probably be the first one to mention how guilty he feels about it subtly which would make a couple of light bulbs turn on in Rory's brain which would make her think about it which would lead to her knocking on Nate's door at 2 a.m. begging him to explain it to her because "I didn't realize how much I had because I've never felt like I had too much of anything. And I thought that was the standard. I just... I only ever wanted to be close to people." and he wouldn't get what she's talking about at first (which is Rory accepting all these expensive gifts and embracing certain lifestyles because they came hand in hand with the people that she cared deeply about and... never evaluating the worth and meaning of these events without connecting them to her loved ones) but he would talk about it anyways and she would listen and compare his experiences to her own and realize how different and how similar people are when compared to each other. (which would also help with her "not like the others" complex, Nate isn't someone Rory would willingly hang out with if friendship=love was up to choice.)

3. Widening of perspective my beloved!!!!! Kind of like Natessa just queue in Rory making these crazy colorful charts and diagrams about the history of cinema for Nate and Nate actively studying them (every day for at least ten minutes) while Dan shows Rory how to play basketball back in the loft (one word: disaster) and Blair is all like 😑🤨🙄 in the corner *inserts endless eye rolls* (she wants us to think she hates Rory, in actuality she thinks her knowledge of the bookish world is rather 🎇acceptable🎇 and she loooooves her BFF Paris there's no TV show Gilmore Girls in this version of canon but that was already implied I suppose... OK but honestly, what Cece is doing is bullying not manipulation, it’s too direct for it to be manipulation. Telling Lily about that she’s sick so Serena can go to cotillion is manipulative, yes, but the rest of it is just straight up intimidation tactics, she’s using her money as a weapon. They could’ve also gone further with the Lily thing by telling Lily that this is what she wants but she doesn’t want Serena to know that she’s sick so Lily puts her foot down about cotillion and says she has to go or else, thereby making Lily the villain while she remains the cool, free-spirited grandmother because when that DOES happen, it’s too late. It should be an ongoing thing.

“She makes your mother look like Gandhi.” “That’s my grandmother you’re talking about.” LMAO LILY GETS NO LOVE.

“Let’s get Carter on the phone.”

This scene could’ve been better. Dan’s delivery of this revelation was pretty bad because his sarcasm took precedence that he didn’t try to speak to Serena delicately and Serena wasn’t asking the right questions. Dan is like “she offered to buy my dad off so I wouldn’t come tonight” and she’s just like “Nope.” Dan could be like, why would I lie? and Serena could talk about how there could be a mistake, she could call out Dan’s tone and then he leaves and when Cece comes instead of her automatically being like, k time for Carter, she could milk the grandmother routine and say how she’d never do such a thing, she doesn’t understand why he’d lie about this etc. Like manipulation takes a lot more subtlety than what’s going on. This is all way too direct.

Lmao Nate is so unbearable this episode.

But The Pierces in the background is pretty atmospheric even though it’s also absolutely ridiculous that they’re performing at a debutante ball.

Serena turning around to see Dan at cotillion is pretty sweet, ngl.

The problem with this cotillion plot line is that it’s too small. Like if this is about legacy and if this is actually about introducing Serena to society then we need to see what cotillion actually means in this world, we need to see how big of a deal it is, one reporter showing up to interview Blair doesn’t mean anything. We need to see Lily’s and Cece’s peers gossip and talk. Also if this is all about how Cece’s values are old-fashioned then either cotillion needs to be the traditional white dress, white gloves ball

or it’s what we see and Cece complains about how modern/contemporary it’s getting.

Chuck is so Chuck. “Hey! Have you seen Blair Waldorf?” reminds me of when I went up to an acquaintance and I didn’t say hi I just asked where my friend was, I was like “Where’s Scott?” and from then on he - the acquaintance - just called me “Where’s Scott?”

Chuck looks genuinely heartbroken at seeing Blair and Nate. *sigh* too bad they get absolutely terrible.

do you think dan loved/ saw the real Blair. or did he only like Blairs good qualities or the character he created? In 5x24, he says "I thought she had changed" what do you think that line meant?

hi!! i dwelled a LOT on question 1, as you’d probably expect, and there’s a bit on your second question at the end of the ask. i didn’t want to put this under a read more, but... i probably have to, hahaha. oh well... 

a lot of people think that dan liked the version of blair he created (i’m not sure why - maybe because of the way derena played out, or maybe because of “inside” & the fact that he definitely was dreaming of her?) but i personally do not agree with that or buy that at all. i’d argue, even, that dan has never had any illusions about the kind of person blair is.

the first time we really get to hear dan’s thoughts on blair (that i can remember, at least), is in 1x04, when he’s complaining to rufus, and he is downright scathing. he hates her! he has a long list of adjectives about how much he hates her!! 

in the end of s1, he and blair even team up to get revenge on georgina because of the shit she put serena through - that gave me so many feels, the first time i watched it, and i’ve actually been thinking abt that a lot - the parallels between 1x18 & 4x10/4x11 and these two being knights in shining armour for serena. maybe i’ll write a fic about that, later (im getting distracted!!) 

in s2, dan says the very iconic “google revenge and you’ll get blair waldorf dot com” thing to vanessa, who wants to help nate. and this makes perfect sense to dan, because he’s definitely schemed with blair to help someone he loves before, and he knows that when it comes to her best friends, she’ll do anything. stuff like this, to me, is the heart of the dair dynamic (along with a 101 other things, blah) because like... dan can see the good parts of it - the fierce loyalty, the “if you want to help nate, blair’s your best shot, because of how she protects and fights for the people she loves,” while also being cynical about it, like, “oh yeah, blair? she’s schemey, she’s mean, she could probably kill someone and show no remorse.” like... .this is one of the most balanced perspectives on blair, ever. i feel like he really understood both sides of her - the part of her that loves so much and so deeply, and the part of her that can be cruel and causes destruction (i would even say that dan himself sort of operates like this - he can be really kind but he can also be really mean, and. yeah idk i just find it fascinating, how much they have in common.)

he even acts on the wrong instinct at times, like, when he’s expecting her to sabotage him at W so he sabotages her first? like, i don’t think there’s really ever an instance where dan is looking at blair and seeing someone who isn’t there? he might read her wrong sometimes, but i feel like he understands her.  they both understand each other! this jibe is one of my favourites because... i think nads @mysteriesofloves said it perfectly here, specifically, the part where she says:

“serena isn’t there to see him, and she won’t be, and he’ll miss his interview waiting for her to throw one glance at him over her shoulder, the way he always has. he says that whatever scheme blair is plotting is going to backfire. and here’s the thing! they’re both completely right - but it has nothing to do with prediction and everything to do with the fact that they know each other better than they know themselves.”

their entire relationship is a gradual building up, and it definitely has its roots in that, you know? like, dan and blair aren’t the people they were in high school, sure, they’re growing past it, but they knew each other back then, they understood each other back then. dan has seen blair at her best, at her romantic and enthusiastic and intellectual opinionated self (whom he vibes with immensely, remember that pretentious sleepover), and he’s seen blair at her worst, and he loves the part of her that schemes and causes problems (she ruined his award nomination thing in despicable b and he was ready to work through it with her!  i know i talk about this episode a LOT but it just really makes me feel things. why would he forgive her for this, if he didn’t understand/accept that side of her???) 

now, for your second question. i honestly do not really remember (or vibe much) with that episode, but i think the whole “i thought she had changed” had to do with like... blair seeing him as an equal, and not just as some poor boy from brooklyn or whatever. blair is pretty canonically classist early on in the series, and she very openly scoffs and looks down on the humphreys due to like, status & wealth & all that jazz (jenny gets it soooo much worse than dan, but. that’s dan’s sister, he’s allowed to be pissed off.) so i would read this as like.. “i thought she and i really connected as two people who had a lot in common, who had common interests and common life goals and who were able to be honest and open and sincere with each other... but i guess that she still looks at me as that nobody from brooklyn, and she’d much rather date a billionaire who’s been terrible to her, than me, who’s tried my best to support her even when she hurt me.” 

i do think there’s ample canon evidence to support this, too, but i can’t think of what to link and show you here that isn’t...... the whole dair arc, lmao. i just think it was very... dan knew that dating him was out of blair’s comfort zone or dream future / ideal future. so i think that’s the context of “i thought she had changed.” like, a paraphrased “i thought i had a chance.”
