Charlie Spring, An Appreciation: Part 1, Courage
Nick Nelson gets a lot of love, and justifiably so; I'll be the first to admit that he's amazing (see my many Nick-related posts as evidence). But I hear all too often that Charlie is leveling up by being with Nick, or that Nick is too good for Charlie. I beg to differ—vehemently—and here's why, part 1 (of 3, maybe?).
I often find myself in awe of Charlie during some of the quietest and least dramatic parts of the Heartstopper show and comics, because his bravery, resilience, and tenacity are displayed in ways that seem inconsequential, but are actually incredibly meaningful and telling. This boy has a thread of steel running through him, whether it's obvious at first glance or not.
We see this almost from the very beginning, when Charlie is assigned to a new form and told that he'll be sitting next to Nick, "one of the rugby boys," and, "I'm sure you'll get along swimmingly." Here is not only Charlie's worst personal nightmare, but also a teacher who is blithely unaware of the terrible position he's just put Charlie in--being placed in close, daily proximity to the type of person Charlie associates with the darkest time of his life. But we don't see fear on his face, or even that much dread—this tells us so much about him in just a nanosecond. There's resignation and bitterness, yes, but Charlie knows he can withstand this, because he's been there before and survived. This is borne out in later conversations with Nick where Charlie assures him that "I'm used to it." This is a horrifying injustice, one Nick rightly calls out, and it shows Charlie's resilience in the face of a degree of cruelty that many people never experience.
Tumblr media
This little moment outside of the changing room is another revealing scene. Charlie knows exactly what he's walking into, exactly the kinds of comments and sly bullying he's going to experience in that room. He knows he will have to have his guard up every second, that he will have to prove himself to this group, even though he shouldn't have to. He also knows he'll be fighting his own self-doubt, and so this experience will be a battle on two fronts. (Three fronts, if you include trying to hide his feelings for Nick.) But he does it anyway. Sure, you could argue he's doing it solely to be near Nick, but I think this is also his way of making sure that those boys don't dictate his actions or his life. This is Charlie taking a stand. And this is just one example—he does this over and over and over again, in many different settings and situations.
Tumblr media
Case in point, calling it off with Ben. Charlie has been the victim of what is essentially brainwashing and abuse from Ben for months. Ben has told Charlie verbally and shown him physically that Charlie means less than nothing to Ben, and that Charlie can never expect anyone to ever want him or care for him. And Charlie often, tragically, believes him. That Charlie is able to break free of this vicious cycle and take the steps to distance himself from Ben shows his immense inner strength. You can see on Charlie's face (thanks to Joe Locke's inimitable talent) that he can't even believe he's done it. And we have to keep in mind that this happens long before Nick is a real possibility, so we can't say Charlie does this for Nick. He does it for himself.
Tumblr media
I do have to include one of the more iconic scenes, because this ⬇️is Charlie's clarion call, his hope, his banner, for the rest of this story. He knows he has a lot of problems to work through, that he's complicated and sometimes hard to interpret, so it's easy to see this scene and think Charlie's words come from a place of insecurity (and of course that is some of what's happening here). But he's strong enough to both acknowledge it and ask honestly that Nick not let those parts of Charlie become the focus of their relationship. He requests, even during this moment of almost brutal honesty and vulnerability, that Nick see him completely, as the whole person he can be, because Charlie knows that person is there inside himself. The self awareness and bravery this takes is enormous.
Tumblr media
There are a million other moments like this that I could write about, both big and small:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I'll end this already lengthy post with this: When one considers the amount of sheer courage Charlie has to exert just to live his daily life, it almost defies understanding. Charlie Spring is a gladiator of the mind and heart, completely worthy of any good thing.

August Fic Rec
I know its late, but better late then never😅 enjoy the fics my loves. And stay hydrated!❤️
Take Your Breath Away by thecheekydragon - (Rating: Explicit, Words: 23102, sterek)
Stiles didn’t need Scott to tell him who their new English Lit teacher was. He knew it was Derek Hale. He also knew Derek Hale was hot.
Graceless by AsexualDerek (Cammerel) - (Rating: Explicit, Words: 22075, sterek)
Stiles doesn't ask for much in return, but a 'please' would be nice.
Then There Was You by EvanesDust, Novkat21 - (Rating: T, Words: 1409, sterek)
'So, could I get you something?' Stiles signs as he speaks, his movements stiff and self-conscious. It's obvious he hasn't done this in a while. 'Did you wanna make out?'
Derek's brows shoot up in surprise, heat rising in his cheeks. That couldn't have been right. 'I'm sorry. I think I misunderstood. Could you repeat that?'
Stiles tries again, and this time there's no mistaking it as he crosses his wrists and bobs his hands up and down as if they were two people making out. But it's a good thing that Derek can read lips because he's clearly saying, "Would you like a coffee?"
They’re all together ooky, the Hale family… (Snap, Snap) by DropsOfAddiction - (Rating: Explicit, Words: 12482, sterek)
Derek realises that he’s probably squashing Stiles a little bit, right at the same moment that Stiles apparently realises that he’s still holding onto Derek’s face.
They both definitely acknowledge Derek’s nakedness at the same exact time, judging by the alarmed look on Stiles’ face.
“So, you have no clothes on,” Stiles removes his hands and holds them above his head in surrender, cheeks a muddy red.
“In my defence, I was covered in fur less than two minutes ago,” Derek rolls his eyes and he pushes himself up and off him, hands covering his junk for Stiles’ sake.
“You’re still kind of furry now…” Stiles sits up, blinking rapidly, clearly just as weirded out as Derek. “Oh my god, pretend I didn’t say that. I’m not looking or anything.”
Derek smirks, because that… that was a lie and he cocks an eyebrow at him.
How Many Wonders by SylvieW - (Rating: Mature, Words: 15359, sterek)
Derek doesn’t think Scott should make a deal with Stiles the sea witch in the first place. When Scott can’t hold up his end of the bargain, he’s doomed to spend eternity in Stiles’ watery hell-soaked lair. Derek can’t stand to see his best friend taken and he’s got an eternity to spare…
Welcome To The Pack by orphan_account - (Rating: Explicit, Words: 16527, sterek)
Summary: A wolf, animal or were doesn't leave it's pack without good reason because it's damned hard and dangerous to join a new one. Stiles is a young Omega forced to do just that when his dad moves from Rio Vista to Beacon Hills.
WARNING: This features Derek in his Animagus Alpha wolf form with Stiles in his Omega wolf form. I don't view this as bestiality, but if the idea squicks you, be a responsible adult and don't read!
Teasing Daddy by sapphireginger - (Rating: Mature, Words: 698, sterek)
Being a parent is something Stiles and Derek both love. One particular morning though their usual banter is laced with underlying sexual teasing. Good thing their kiddos don't pick up on it.
Fight Fear for the Selfish Pain (it was worth it every time) by LadySlytherin - (Rating: T, Words: 11779, sterek)
After Kate Argent pretended to be his soulmate and burned most of his family alive, Derek resigned himself to a life alone, unwilling to trust the mark on his wrist again.
Stiles Stilinski has never seen his soulmark - and never will - so he's accepted that he'll never know the person who's supposedly perfect for him.
Fate is a funny thing, and it has a way of leveling the playing field in ways no one would expect.
Question of Trust by Hedwig221b - (Rating: Explicit, Words: 5785, sterek)
Having made the hardest decision of his life to willingly betray his beloved alpha, Stiles struggles to accept his new reality. The unexpected arrival of a familiar guest can change everything, but will it be done in revenge or out of love?
Satisfaction Brought It Back by Snare - (Rating: Explicit, Words: 7223, sterek)
Derek doesn't know how nobody else seems to notice the large, ever-present bulge in Stiles' jeans. He can't help but be curious about it, he just - he just wants.

I could literally fall asleep any minute but im nothing if not sleep deprived and watching my favourite gay little shows!
Tumblr media
hey nawa, I see you looking at guy as he struggles in the room on his crutches
you should kiss him
I think that you should absolutely just slam your face into his
give him another injury but its not really an injury it's just a hickey
(we're less than a minute into the episode and im already begging guynawa to make out, we're off to a great start)
Tumblr media
we all know this is a complete lie, we've seen the trailers, we know what's gonna happen
but that doesnt mean it doesnt hurt my sad little gay soul
Tumblr media
sailom what the hell
no way
no
you are not quitting school
is that a frikin letter of resignation or smth? can you even do that?
Tumblr media
I love that solution and I wish it were a possibility but sailom's gonna say no, of course he's gonna say no, because the stupid bastard doesn't like accepting help for free
he doesn't understand the concept of FRIENDSHIP and FAVOURS
BITCH YOU CAN ACCEPT HELP, YOU'RE ALLOWED TO ACCEPT HELP, THEY ARE SO SO WILLING TO HELP AND GIVE YOU MONEY AND SCHOLARSHIPS AND PLATONIC LOVE AND H E L P
O4EKLGHNVWOERISDLGI HE MAKES ME SO ANGRY I HATE HIM
Tumblr media
guy's right, and I hate sailom so much for it
Tumblr media
BUT THAT'S THE THING, he WONT ask for help, theres no way in HELL that he'll ask for help
which is precisely how he ends up getting shot at, alone on a street corner, and why kang will have to rescue him on his bike, and why sailom will stand in the bathroom with kang holding a blanket over him as he sobs 'I have no one left'
its not that you have no one left. it's that you wont accept the help from the people who love you
(and also your brother kind of abandoned you and your parents are dead and your boyfriend also kind of abandoned you and yeah anyone would definitely feel alone in that situation so he's perfectly valid, but also ALL of his friends are offering help, his teacher is offering help, and he's accepting NONE of it)
Tumblr media
HUG TIME
OH MAN IM ALREADY SOBBING
I LOVE MEANINGFUL GROUP HUGS SO MUCH
this could be one of the last times that they see sailom for a really long time. theres no way I could possibly be sadder holy frick
Tumblr media
I SPOKE TOO SOON
WHY MUST THERE BE FLASHBACKS
WHY
I HATE EVERYTHING
Tumblr media
y'know, I really thought he might hug him. but nope. he wrenched that pin off his shirt and took my heart in the process.
Tumblr media
OMG
YES
THE PERFECT THING TO MAKE ME REMEMBER WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE HAPPY
GUYNAWA TIME PLEASE GUYNAWA TIME
Tumblr media
NOOOOO THE SCENE CUT BEFORE NAWA WALKED INTO THE LITTLE ROOM THINGY TO TALK TO GUY IM SO MAD
well, not really mad
mostly just sad
Tumblr media
bitch wth
of COURSE he's not frikin doing alright
Tumblr media
omg he's here too?
go talk to your boyfriendddd
and also ANSWER MY QUESTIONS PLEASE IM BEGGING YOU IM SO CONFUSED GIVE ME ANSWERS
Tumblr media
awh :(
thank you krup ;-;
this man is lovely
not just for this but also just in general
but also his actor is the freaking DIRECTOR who is RESPONSIBLE for a LOT of my anguish so we can't be too nice to this guy
Tumblr media
oh look at that. the shooting scene is right about to happen
I was expecting it to come later on in the episode but this works too I guess
Tumblr media
who the hell are these guys???
they dont say a word
what the hell is going on
Tumblr media
thank you kanggg
where did he come from tho
how'd he know where sailom was and that that was happening? did he just HAPPEN to be in the area?
or is he tracking sailom's phone just to make sure he's safe cos like he already got drugged once
Tumblr media
hey man, have you ever heard of a little thing called dodgeball?
shocking, I know, but it IS possible for a gun to have been fired, and for the person being fired at to not actually get shot
I can't think of a single reason why sailom would make up this story. like sure you could argue that hes just trying to get an enemy/rival convicted, but he very explicitly stated that he has no idea who tried to shoot him, so it can't be that.
why the hell are you suspicious my guy?
acab is real man, holy frick
Tumblr media
how do you know they're all fake tho?
maybe all of them were real reports and you're just an ignorant arrogant piece of shit who doesn't think people under the age of 20 are capable of being truthful
I hate this guy so much
Tumblr media
OH MY-
NOW HES STARTING TO SOUND LIKE FRIKIN UMBRIDGE
I WAS IRRITATED BEFORE, BUT NOW IM ANGRY
deep breaths, deep breaths, in and out in and out, lets not destroy our laptop today
Tumblr media
thATS WHAT I SAID!
Tumblr media
I feel that
Tumblr media
:(
im so sad man
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
oh would you look at that. ive been impaled.
yeah that whole scene was a trainwreck for me. I am very much not even slightly okay but its fine
Tumblr media
OHHHHHHH
that makes sense
Tumblr media
WHAT
ANSWER MY QUESTIONS BITCH
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT? WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED THAT NIGHT CMON MAN IM SO CONFUSED
Tumblr media
the way they fall back into old habits, kang's arm draped over sailom ;-;
I ran out of images as per usual, BUT im halfway through the episode when it happened, as opposed to like ten minutes through, so that's a nice change of pace

A Bastard’s Happiness

A/N: Requested by @futuristicyouthvoid!! Sorry it took so long for me to finish this, just had a long week at work and I was feeling lazy. I finally finished myself to finish it tonight but I haven’t proofread so it might be a bit shitty compared to my normal stuff. I hope you still enjoy!
Disclaimer: I do not own any characters mentioned. They belong to George R.R. Martin. I do not own any gifs used. They belong to their original creators. I do not consent to my work being published by other accounts or on other platforms.
Tumblr media
Being a bastard was never easy. However, being a bastard of Ned Stark and the twin sister of Jon Snow made it significantly easier. Though you were detested by the Lady Catelyn Stark, no one went out of their way to make your life difficult. Your upbringing was fairly peaceful. Jon protected you and your half-siblings were kind. Robb would tease and joke with you, but was never anything less than a gentleman. Sansa was always friendly, bonding over your needlework with her. She was far better than you were, her mother being her teacher, but yours was not shabby by any means. Despite your friendship with Sansa, Arya was also quite fond of you, though not nearly as much as she was with Jon. When she was a bit younger, the two of you would play sword with longer branches you could find in the Godswood.
The Godswood was your favorite place in the entirety of Winterfell. It was quiet and always peaceful. Which is why you had sought it that particular evening. Dusk began to grow, but you could only sob under the watchful eyes of the heart trees’ faces. The godswood, typically a place of peace and sanctuary, was the only comfort you could think of after your brother told you of his plans to leave for the Night’s Watch when your father left for King’s Landing.
You had been aware of this trip as soon as the wheels began to turn for it. You had resigned yourself to the fact that your father was leaving and taking your sisters with him. As long as you had Jon, you could face down Balerion himself. But the Night’s Watch? That wasn’t just someplace you could follow him to. You couldn’t and you wouldn’t. There was nothing at that frozen castle for a woman, let alone a bastard woman. A shiver ran down your spine at the thought of being surrounded by the criminals you knew lurked there. Even Jon couldn’t fight the entirety of the Night’s Watch for you.
A particularly strong wind blew through the trees, making you look up. A large frame was walking towards you, forcing your back ramrod straight. Another anxious beat of your heart resonated in your chest before you recognized the shape. “Lord father, I did not realize it was you.” You relaxed as Lord Stark’s stoic face appeared clearly from the shadows.
“I did not mean to startle you, (Y/N).” He settled down on a log next to you. “I was told that I may find you out here. Jon has told you of his plans.” You nodded in affirmation, teeth finding your lip as you nibbled it anxiously.
“My dear, I do not wish to see you unhappy. But I cannot allow you to go with your brother. I am sorry.” His tone was sincere as he placed a warm hand on your knee. Looking up at him with teary eyes, you nodded. You had no desire to go to the Wall anyways, but this command from Lord Stark only solidified it.
The two of you sat in silence for a short time before you spoke. “Father, may I ask you for something?” He chuckled softly and gave you a curt nod. “Would it be at all possible for me to go with you to King’s Landing? I know that I should not ask since I have asked so much already, but I do not wish to stay in Winterfell without Jon. I think I’d like to explore, see more of Westeros. If you would permit it, of course. I-I-... I can protect myself. Gods know I’ve knocked Robb on his arse plenty. And I wouldn’t need much! I would never ask anything to be a burden on you.” You were rambling, you realized, and cut yourself off from continuing with a shaky breath.
Ned gave you a soft smile before wrapping his arm around your shoulders. You leaned into him and closed your eyes, taking in the feeling. His strong arm was warm and cradled you gently. He smelled of the Godswood and the hall in the keep. Burning this moment into your brain rooted you back to reality and you looked up at him with a smile. “I would not deny you this, daughter. You are a Stark, even if you do not have the name. If it is your wish to accompany us, then it shall be so.” Your face lit up with a grin as you wrapped your arms around him tightly. The action caught Ned offguard, but he returned it nonetheless. “Now, come. You are missing dinner.”
                                                          —
The Red Keep was not at all what you had imagined it to be. It loomed over you as the Stark party finished the final leg of its journey. King’s Landing, however, was exactly what you imagined. The stench and crowds as described your lord father had not been exaggerated, making you hate both upon arrival.
It was fairly easy to trudge through the rest of the day, seeking the comfort of a comfortable bed after many months on the road. After all formalities had been seen to, you were shown to your rooms. Here, you had a servant prepare a bath for you as well as bring you food. The woman curstied and scurried away when you thanked her. As soon as she left, you worked on stripping yourself, hands working on their own as your mind strayed to the ride in. It was there, that you saw a familiar yet almost unrecognized face. Ser Beric Dondarrion. A few years your elder, he was someone you had met at a tourney in honor of the betrothal of one of the Tully cousins to one of his own cousins. You were both younger then, you only turning two and ten while Beric had recently celebrated his 17th nameday.
He had gone to the abandoned training grounds that were on the other side of the castle from the tourney field. The day had been long and it was only midday. His father pushing him to find a bride was not something he wanted to deal with all day, so he decided to hack at a training dummy all day instead.
Here, he found you sparring with Jon, still short and awkward and chubby-faced. Despite the small age gap, the three of you became good friends over the duration of the week-long tourney. When you all bid goodbye for the last time, he swore to send ravens and Jon agreed to do the same. Over the past few years, however, the ravens became sparse and the letters not as detailed as when you were children. Seeing his face again had been a slight shock. He seemed older now, his hair cropped short and close to his head and a certain weariness in his eyes that had not been there before. You know, of course, that he had been named Lord of Blackhaven a few years after that tourney, but you were not prepared to see him like that.
Reaching up, you pulled free the few pins in your hair, shaking your mane out as you did. Your fingers pressed lightly into the slightly aching areas the metal had left behind. Once you were free from your confined clothing, you grabbed a robe from one of your chests that had been delivered to your room. It was slightly too warm for the warm climate of King’s Landing. The thick material still smelled of home, however, and it brought a sense of comfort to you. You wrapped it around yourself, burying your nose into your shoulder.
A soft knock broke you from your reverie and had your feet following the sound to your door. “Thank the gods,” you muttered to yourself. The ache in your stomach had begun to grow. You were quite surprised, however, to find someone holding a tray of food that was not your maid. “Lord Beric!” The shock must have been evident upon your face because he simply chuckled and nodded.
“Lady (Y/N). A pleasure to see you again after all these years.” Still a gentleman, it seemed, given his use of a title that did not belong to you. “I thought I had seen you this morning in the Great Hall but I was not sure. Forgive the intrusion, but I had to see for myself if it was truly you.” There was an almost childlike expression of excitement on his face as he gazed upon you. A beat of breath held silence between the two of you before he realized he had caught you at a stage of undress.
“I was wondering the same, actually.” You admitted, wrapping yourself a bit tighter in your robe. “Forgive my state, I was expecting my maid.” He nodded, holding up the tray he seemed to have forgotten momentarily.
“Yes, that is where I got this. She went off to fetch bathwater, I believe.” He kept his eyes firmly planted on your face, honor not allowing his eyes to drift. The thought made you smile slightly, glad to know he hadn’t grown out of his knightly habits. “Jon is not with you?” In the short time he knew you both, the dark-headed twins were never far from one another.
You shook your head gently, opening the door fully and gesturing for him to come in. He set the tray of food down on the table before turning back to you. “I’m afraid not. He’s actually gone to the Wall. My brother plans on taking the black.” A bittersweet smile graced your lips.
He answered with his own small frown. “I’m sorry to hear that. For you, at least. I know that must not have been easy.” You shrugged slightly but nodded in affirmation.
“I will be alright. It’s about time I got rid of the sack of bones.” You attempted with a lighthearted joke, which he graciously chuckled at. “Truthfully, I am glad he is doing what will make him happy. He deserves it.”
Beric took a few steps closer to you. “And, if I may be so forward, my lady, what do you plan? Hopefully to find your own happiness.”
Your cheeks warmed imperceptibly. “I do hope to find that, yes. I must admit, I have thought quite a bit on what I will do here, but I still do not know.” You chuckled softly, eyes flicking up to his.
“Perhaps we would be able to know each other better while you are here. If you can make the time for me, of course.” His tone was teasing and the glint in his eyes was full of mirth. The soft scuttle of shoes on the stone behind you drew your attention from the knight in front of you. Your maid had returned with two others to fill your bath. “For now, my lady, I will leave you.”
“I think I will be able to make time to see you, my lord. A very thoughtful offer that I would gladly take. A good night to you, Lord Beric.” He now stood right in front of you, bowing to take your hand. His lips brushed your knuckles, light as a feather. Your eyes never left each others, so you curtseyed, the only thing you could think to do.
“Sleep well, my lady.” With that, he was gone and your maid was informing you that your bath was ready. When you sank into the warm water, you blamed the red heat across your face on the steam.
                                                          —
Days turned into weeks that turned into months of your time in King’s Landing. Three months, to be exact. You managed to fill your days despite your earlier doubts. You spent your time either exploring the Red Keep with Arya, working your needlepoint with Sansa, or spending time with Beric. Often times, the two of you would spar with one another, There were days, however, when you spent your time with him walking through the gardens or walking the markets of King’s Landing.
“My lady, I hope I have not kept you waiting.” His voice behind you made you startle, but you turned to look up at him with a warm smile.
“Not at all, my lord.” You took the arm he offered to you before your short trek to the palace gardens. “I hope your morning was kind to you.” He had told you before that he prefers to do any and all business that he must as Lord of Blackhaven.
“It was nothing too difficult, my lady. Mostly, I spent my time waiting for a delivery from the marketplace.” Your brow quirked at him but you kept your face forward.
A small smile graced your lips when you felt his eyes on your face. “I hope your purchase was worth your wait and coin, my lord.” He nodded in agreement.
“I suppose you will have to tell me.” The two of you came to a halt as he removed his arm from your hand to reach into his coat. From an interior pocket, he produced a box, just longer than his hand that it sat upon.
Your eyes lit up in surprise as you gazed up at him. “Is it…?” Gifts were not something you were entirely unused to, but they were very unused to handsome young men, even if it was just friendly.
“For you, my lady. I hope you will find it as beautiful as I find you.” His words were spoken gently, though they still brought what you were sure was a pink dusting to your cheeks.
Opening the box, you found the most beautiful dagger that you had ever seen. The hilt had carvings of direwolves on one side, while a small purple jewel, one of his house’s colors, sat in the middle of the engravings on the other side. Your eyes, suddenly watery, turned up to him.”My lord, it’s…” Words failed to come to you. “I don’t know that I can accept this.” He smiled and shook his head, clasping the hand that held the knife gently.
“You can and you will. I insist.” You couldn’t help the grin that grew on your cheeks. The moment your eyes met, however, you swore a spark hit your chest. His gaze drew you in, leaving you nearly breathless. No words were spoken, the heat of his hand on yours suddenly very intense.
“Lady (Y/N), your father sends for you.” The voice of one of your father’s men snapped the pair of you from whatever moment you had just been caught in. A guilty blush engulfed your cheeks as you nodded.
“Thank you. I will be along in just a moment.” You returned your gaze to Beric. “Only because you insist, my lord, I will thank you for this incredibly generous gift.” You dipped into a curtsey before placing the lid atop the box again. He bid you a soft goodbye, which you returned, before you followed your father’s man.
Arriving in your father’s chambers, a bolt of panic struck any floating feelings you held of your moment with Lord Beric into the dirt. “Father!” You cried as you rushed to his bedside, kneeling by your lord father’s head. Sansa stood to your right while Arya, on the other side of the bed, looked almost wrathful. “What has happened?” A gleam of sweat covered your father’s pale face and his leg was propped up under blanket. “There was a… situation with Ser Jaime.” Ned did not wish to delve into the details with your younger sisters around, so he motioned to Septa Mordane, who herded the younger two Stark girls from the room. “He attacked us in the streets. Jory is dead.” His hand found your free one, gripping it gently as a sob racked through your chest. Jory had been the first of your father’s men to train you willingly, acting as another older brother. You held a great amount of love for the man. Gently, your father tugged on your hand and motioned for you to sit on the bed next to him. You obliged, Beric’s gift resting in your lap. “Daughter, I worry. For your safety, especially. You do not have the Stark name to protect you.”
“I can protect myself, father. I can protect Sansa and Arya, too.” Your voice was pleading as you looked at him, scared of his next words. His smile was sad as he looked up at you. “I know, my child, I know. But I would rather you protect yourself somewhere else. King’s Landing is too dangerous. (Y/N), I want you to leave tonight. Ride for Riverrun. Though Cat is not your mother, the Tullys will still protect you. You are family. Hoster and Edmure have always been kind to you and your brother.” He readjusted his position on the bed gently, trying to keep the pain from flaring. “Tonight, you will pack a bag and take some money and food and ride.” His voice left no room for discussion. Though you knew he wanted only to protect you, fat tears still dropped onto your cheeks.
He reached up to pet your hair softly before looking at the box in your lap. “A gift? From who?” His attempts to distract you from tears made you smile softly. You lifted the lid from the box and presented the blade to him. “Lord Beric. He has just graced me with it before I came to you.” Ned’s eyes looked over you with a small, knowing smile.
“I’m sorry I am making you do this thing, but it must be done.” You nodded your agreement before standing. “And, for your safety, I beg that you do not tell anyone that you are leaving. I will explain it to Sansa and Arya.”
You nodded again. “I suppose I shall go prepare then. I shall see you tonight, Lord Father.”
That night, you found yourself pressing a kiss goodbye to your father’s cheek before one of his men whisked you away to the stables. An extra simple gown, a bag of gold, and a few days rations of food weighed your saddle pack while your sword and gifted dagger swayed on your belt.
                                                          —
“Lord Beric Dondarrion. You shall have the command. Assemble one hundred men and ride to Ser Gregor’s keep.” The young lord agreed and, after Lord Eddard sentenced Ser Gregor, was ready to leave so he may prepare. “A moment, Lord Beric.” The younger man nodded and approached the Hand as everyone else left the Great Hall. Though the pair received an inquiring look from Littlefinger, they were soon alone. Ned’s voice was soft as he spoke, not wanting to be overheard. “As well as bringing Ser Gregor to justice, I would like to ask something else of you.”
Beric nodded. “Anything, Lord Hand.” Eddard’s gaze flicked to the doors and then to the hall leading to the Small Council room.
“My daughter, (Y/N). I have sent her to the Riverlands for her safety, after I was attacked. I told her to ride for Riverrun, but I fear she shall not go to my good father’s home. I ask that you search for her while in the Riverlands. Protect her, make sure she makes it to the Wall if you can. I imagine that is where she will want to go.” Beric’s heart skipped a beat at the Hand’s request. When you had disappeared a week ago, no note and no goodbye, he feared that he overstepped his boundaries. “I will find her, Lord Hand, and give my life for hers if I must.”
                                                          —
Months had passed since you had fled King’s Landing. Eddard’s suspicions were correct. He was taken prisoner and beheaded not long after. The rest of your household was killed with him, the only ones spared being Sansa and, presumably, Arya. When you had heard the news, you were staying at an inn in the Riverlands. Riverrun was nearby, but you had not yet decided if you wished to continue as your lord father had wished or if you wanted to find your brother.
Sitting at a table by yourself, you mulled over your thoughts with a tank of ale in your hands and the leftover remnants of your warm dinner in front of you. So lost in thought, you almost didn’t notice the man who decided to sit across from you. He was pock-faced and stank immensely of piss and ale. Immediately, he tried to get you to lay with him, his words slurred together. His attempt was shortlived, thankfully, as a lithe man with a bun pulling the hair from his face stepped in. The new man boxed the other around the ears, which had the drunk man grumbling before stumbling away.
“I apologize for my man. He’s drunk. My name is Thoros, my lady.” Thoros sat in the now vacant seat across from you.
“I thank you, Ser Thoros. I was worried his smell would bring my dinner back onto my plate.” He chuckled at your sharp tongue. “I am (Y/N) Sn-... Stone.” After recent events, you had to remind yourself that being a Northerner outside of the North was far less safe than being a bastard of anywhere else. Thoros eyes narrowed at you slightly before he smiled politely.
“Well, (Y/N), it is a pity that you’re not a Snow. My men and I have been instructed by our lord to look out for a (Y/N) Snow. My lord is not looking for any Stones, though, so I suppose I shall leave you to your drink.” He stood from the table and started to make his way back to sit with his men.
“Wait!” You turned to stand after him. “Who is your lord?”
                                                          —
“Thoros is returning, my lord.” Beric nodded at the soldier before standing from his seat. Resheathing his sword, he walked towards the approaching party. He counted an extra horse, however, and greeted Thoros with a confused look.
“My friend, may I present to you, (Y/N) Snow. Or so she says.” Thoros grinned at his friend teasingly, who gazed up at you with surprise in his eye. You dismounted your horse before approaching him timidly. It was not lost on you that you had disappeared from him, not saying anything about where you were going, and you were worried he would be upset with you, though it would be rightfully.
“Lord Beric,” you murmured before dropping into a curtsey. The man said nothing. Fear crept into your gut as you kept your eyes fixed on the ground in front of you. You were more than surprised, however, when Beric approached you quickly and pulled you into his arms. A small gasp fell from your lips before your own arms wrapped around his neck, face buried in his strong shoulder.
“(Y/N)... I was so worried,” he admitted when he pulled away from you, his hands holding onto your arms gently. Eye flicking around you, he noticed that many of his men were watching the pair of you. “Come. Let us find some privacy.” You nodded in agreement as he lead you to a secluded area of their hideout.
“I’m sorry,” you said as soon as you were alone. “My father was attacked and he wanted me to be safe so I ran. I wanted to say goodbye, truly, but he forbade it and I’m so sorry. Especially after you gave me such a thoughtful gift, I felt most horrible to leave you as I did.” You knew you were rambling but struggled to shut the floodgates as words tumbled from your lips.
Beric did not mind. Instead of letting you continue your rambling, his warm, calloused hand cupped your face before dropping his lips to meet your own. Your eyes shot open in surprise before fluttering closed, returning his soft yet desperate kiss. He was the first to pull away, resting his forehead against yours. “I thought I had scared you away. But your lord father sent me here and he told me everything. He asked me to find you.” Tears welled in your eyes at his words. “I am so sorry for your loss, (Y/N).” His voice was soft as he spoke.
Tears spilled over but his thumbs were quick to wipe them from your cheeks. “I was supposed to go to Riverrun but I couldn’t bring myself to do it.” Your voice was watery and trembling as you spoke.
“The Lord of Light. He knew we would find you.” You giggled softly, more in surprise than anything. “My lady, I ask that you forgive my boldness again, but I must admit. You have my heart, (Y/N). When you left, I knew I had to find you again. Now you are here. I beg that you stay with me. Let me protect you. Let me love you.”
Your own hand came up to caress his cheek, his head leaning into your palm. “The old gods and the new would have to drag me away from you, Beric.” He smiled at you, sunshine from his grin warming you through. Pulling away from him slightly, you allowed yourself to take in his appearance. His beard had grown out much more, a patch covered his right eye, and a new weariness made him look older than his 21 years. “What’s happened to you?” Your fingers drifted over the patch.
His shoulders shook with a soft chuckle. “I will tell you everything later, my love. But it was all worth it. I have you back, so it was worth it.”

Shousetsu Smile Precure
Tumblr media
Author: Yuuji Kobayashi
Illustrator: Toshie Kawamura
Label: Kodansha Character Bunko
Release Date: 4 October 2016 (initial release), 8 February 2023 (this edition)
My Score: 4/5
This book was much better than the Heartcatch Precure one, but it has a twist that, while predictable, kind of makes the whole volume feel less worth reading. This book takes place 10 years after the end of the anime and the first 5 chapters focus on each heroine in turn as we learn about what they are up to. Miyuki is working at a bookstore in the children's area, Akane has taken over her family's okonomiyakiya and has reunited with Brian, Yayoi is a successful mangaka, Nao is a soccer coach and still lives with her family, and Reika is a middle school teacher. But in each story things are going wrong. Miyuki's bookstore is closing down, Brian is leaving Japan, Yayoi has decided to finish her manga "Miracle Peace" after seven years of serialization, Nao injured her leg and can no longer become a champion soccer player, and a student has placed a letter in the suggestion box at school calling for Reika's resignation. And the weirdest thing is that the girls don't remember each other. They don't remember each other's names, and they don't remember being Precure. Their middle school years are like a blur.
I really enjoyed these chapters. It was great to see the characters as adults and seeing them overcome their struggles was really satisfying. The writing style is different for all of the POVs and you can tell that the writer was someone who worked on the script of the anime as they understand the girls so well. I particularly like Akane's and Nao's chapters. Akane breaks the fourth wall in her narration a bit and it feels like you're a customer at her okonomiyakiya and she's telling you a story as she serves you. I always found Nao to be the most boring member of this cast as her personality is pretty much 'loves her family' so reading a story where she decides that it's time to branch out and start to have a life separate from them is immensely satisfying. These chapters delivered what I wanted from this volume and I couldn't have been more satisfied with them.
It's a shame then that the obvious plot twist does happen: this a plot by the villain Joker and none of these events are actually happening. The girls are just trapped in a book world that Joker created and need to get out. It's worst kind of plot twist that makes everything that came before it feel less worth reading. It doesn't completely ruin the book. I do like that the book is still something of an epilogue with the events taking place one year after the events on the anime. I like that we get adult precure transformations, even if there aren't any illustrations to show them off. I like the overall message about overcoming despair and the writing is really strong and compelling. I just feel like it would have been a better and more impactful work without that twist and the twist made it a lot less satisfying overall.

Growing up, I didn't have 'friends'. In hindsight I'm probably high-functioninig autistic who didn't know how to mask but I've never actually done any kind of tests so I don't know for certain. But I was 'very weird,' 'creepy,' 'painfully shy,' 'retarded,' 'not ready for social interaction' (a mix of reviews from my peers and teachers/activity leaders.) Anyway, my preferred location during socialization was underneath the tables and in the corners. I was very, very good at making myself invisible, and I used it.
As we got older, my sister - vivacious, charming, clever, witty, and very pretty - began acquiring friends. (If you're familiar with Pride & Prejudice I was the Mary to her Elizabeth even though I'm actually older.) And sometimes I would hang out around the edges of her friend groups.
Eventually as a teenager I began forming a sort of friendships online, but none of them lasted - we either drifted away or burned up in a brilliant conflagration of drama and misunderstandings. And, yes, my good intentions led to most those conflagrations.
I was so bitterly lonely.
I resigned myself to being unlikable and strange and off-putting. To people regretting their overtures and polite conversations trailing off into silence and side-eyes at my weirdness and friendships not ever lasting.
But somewhere along the way I decided to tone down my natural snark and sarcasm and think three or four times before hitting post to see if my tone came across the way I wanted it to or if I just sounded patronizing and to make more effort to get out of my self-centered bubble of a mindset and to try, to try to always be kind. To show Christ's love to all I meet.
And then people started calling me wise and I can only laugh helplessly because I'm not, I'm so not, I just overthink things and flail around in the darkness and go "Hey maybe" "What if" and if my overthinking helps someone else I'm very glad but I'm not wise, I'm so much not wise.
And people said I was kind and I went "Oh, well, that means I'm succeeding then".
And then someone called me beloved and it was like running into a brick wall. What do you mean 'beloved'. I can't be 'beloved!' I am unlikable, much less lovable. What do you mean I help you feel better what do you mean I'm not scary what do you mean you think about me during your day what do you mean I'm your friend what do you mean what do you mean what do you mean, and why am I crying?
Anyway. Now when my children ask who I'm talking to I say "my friends" and when I see the color green or the color purple or flowers in a meadow or flowers in the world around me or small creatures or pretty teapots or horses or ponies or cowboys or whimsical gardens or picturesque cottages or overgrown paths or stars or sunsets or clouds or colors, they make me think of
my friends. <3

15 Questions for 15 Mutuals
as tagged by @vault-heck <3 thank you friend, I hope you're doing well these days! tagging @edaworks and @perfectlypreservedpie @persephotea @truebluemeandyou @bokatan @aviatorfics @wolfbirbisme @khazrablood @kremvhstooth
1. Are you named after anyone?
My name is a bit of an "oof". In a sentence my mom was raised by Very Strict Irish Parents and she had me at 18. They disowned us after I was born; my name is her mom's middle name and my middle is the fem version of her dad's name. I have mulled over changing it because we don't have a relationship with them - it's fairly unique being an Irish name and I find myself resigned to it. TMI moving on lmao
2. When was the last time you cried?
I cry every time my girlfriend goes home :'D
3. Do you have kids?
I have PCOS and will hit 30 next year - I likely will never have my own but I am open to adopting :) I really love kids.
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
I invented sarcasm
5. What sports do you play/have you played?
Judo
6. What's the first thing you notice about other people?
I notice.. a lot - I am... observant about people, to use a word. Whether you feel awkward or standoffish or open or not. I don't know how to describe it. Perhaps it is a body language thing.
7. Eye color?
Bright blue - kind of like the lighter part of a blue portal from, well Portal
8. Scary movies or happy endings?
Why not both? :D
9. Any special talents?
One thing my girlfriend mentioned is I can pick people apart like a lawyer can. I can figure out fairly quickly what someone's damage is and put someone in their place. This sounds like an evil skill, but the best way of putting it is I am not going to be dishonest if you act holier than thou or if you think you're special and better than others, and you need to be told to sit down. An example of doing this for good is standing up for people, especially if someone is being punched down upon. If you enjoy being a bully to others in fandom spaces because you feel most comfortable when you're an expert and can control the conversation, and that self perception being questioned is such a problem you think you're being attacked (yet do nothing when a less popular account than yours gets a ton of hate for days while you get headpats from your minions), I'm gonna send an anon about it. Bullies tend to be insecure nerds and I will do my best to call them out behind the scenes.
10. Where were you born?
Atlantic Canada
11. What are your hobbies?
I write Long Time Running on AO3. I am a really big music fan and am a bit of a historian for punk music. I really love my plants - I collect primarily aroid species such as philodendron and monstera but I also really miss traditional gardening. The goal is to get a fraction of a piece of land sometime in the next few years so I can have a proper garden space again. Woooo compost :)
12. Do you have any pets?
I do not and I wish to! I can claim my partner's cockatiel, Darwin. We video chat and it's funny - he and I have intense whistling conversations and he understands I exist but he doesn't conceptualize that me existing through the phone doesn't = me being in the same room. So he tries looking around the phone to see if I am there. Poor baby
13. How tall are you?
5"2. Tiny terror
14. Fave subject in school?
I felt most seen by Language Arts/English. My fourth grade teacher let me read the Lord of the Rings trilogy for a book report instead of telling me I had to choose just one for a book report. I am hopeless if I am not writing
15. Dream job?
Everyone asks me what I wanna be when I grow up, everyone asks me what I wanna do for a job. Nobody asks me if I want to work or not. I don't. I want to be a househusband for my girlfriend and I want to make her lunch and keep her house clean. This said, I am in school to be a paralegal because working and getting an income is important I guess. True Marxist Accelerationism is accepting: money isn't real, be a wifeguy instead ;)

Fruits Basket Personality Types Part 10: Hatori Sohma
Tumblr media
It's time for the Sad Seahorse Daddy himself!
Like many of the secondary characters, we don't know a whole lot about Hatori's early childhood (up to age 5), but I'll do my best to figure out his Enneagram and MBTI!
Hatori Sohma's Enneagram
Wound: We know Hatori's parents were rather cold and strict, and that he had to live with the pressure and expectations of being the dragon of the Zodiac as well as the next family doctor and the bearer of the memory suppression technique. He also lost his mother when he was in elementary school.
Wounding message: You must live up to expectations and fulfill your role.
Core desire: To protect the younger Zodiacs and Tohru from making the same mistakes he did.
Core fear: That he'll fail to protect the younger Zodiacs and Tohru, or cause them more harm and heartbreak.
Defense mechanism: To repress his emotions and appear stoic at all times, to have high expectations of himself and others.
Strengths: Hatori is kind, dependable, a hard worker, conscientious, witty, calm in a crisis, competent, thoughtful, and attuned to future consequences.
Challenges: Hatori is closed off, judgmental, rigid, critical, withdrawn, melancholy, reluctant to open up to people, passive-aggressive, and easily embarrassed.
When healthy: Hatori can show a sense of humor, have a bit more spontaneity, and be open to new experiences and the joys of life.
When unhealthy: Hatori is withdrawn, resigned, and believes happiness is not for him.
Looking at all of this, here's what connects when I go back to the Enneagram post:
Wound: could be 1, 2, 3, 5, or 7
Wounding message: could be 1 or 3
Core desire: 1 is best fit, though it's not a great match
Core fear: 1 or 3
Defense mechanism: 1, 3, or 5
Strengths: 1 or 6
Challenges: 1, 5, and 9
When healthy: 1 or 6
When unhealthy: 1, 3, 7, 8 and 9
Hatori is most likely an Enneagram 1.
From The Enneagram Institute:
Ones are conscientious and ethical, with a strong sense of right and wrong. They are teachers, crusaders, and advocates for change: always striving to improve things, but afraid of making a mistake. Well-organized, orderly, and fastidious, they try to maintain high standards, but can slip into being critical and perfectionistic. They typically have problems with resentment and impatience.
Ones live in the Gut center, and tend to repress anger. From Personality Path:
Anger is typically repressed by Type 1s. Type 1s try hard not to express anger as they associate it as a “bad” emotion. Instead, they report a lot of irritation. Interestingly, when their anger is eventually expressed, it can be intense, with a laser focus.
Wing
Hatori is someone who goes along with things to preserve the peace, even when he knows it's wrong. He's one of Akito's biggest enablers (though part of that is due to the way the curse works), and he feels a great deal of shame about that. For these reasons, I see him as a 1w9.
The Enneagram Institute refers to 1w9s as "The Idealist," and 1w2s as "The Advocate."
EnneaApp describes 1w9s like this:
Focus on theory and idealism while still trying to be a peacemaker
Usually introverted and reserved; can be impatient, rigid, sarcastic
Won't speak up until sure of correctness; less inclined to take action
Passionate about ideals; reflective and curious; generally considerate
Subtype
Hatori seems most focused on his role within the community. For this reason, I see him as a SO 1w9.
Enneagram Explained describes SO Ones like this:
Focuses On:  The need to be correct/right with their groups and communities. SO 1s often take on being the teacher or role model with those around them; trying to show others the right way to live. These 1s are often concerned with fairness and justice. Relationship to Their Vice (anger): SO 1s often suppress their anger but are also a bit ok with showing it. Potential Mistypes: SO 1s can often look like type 3s or type 5s.
This totally sounds like Hatori to me!
Tritype
I think Hatori is a great example of a 3-5-1 tritype, "The Technical Expert."
This tritype is described on Katherine Fauvre's website:
If you are a 135, you are diligent, focused, and knowledgeable. You want to be ethical, efficient, and wise. Highly rational, you seek systems and procedures. Detail-oriented, you like mathematical concepts and finding ways to break down and understand complex material. You are very precise and good with exacting details that others find difficult to manage. Often technical, you prefer to work with facts and logic and can, at times, seem unemotional or insensitive.
Hatori Sohma's MBTI
E vs. I: Hatori is highly Introverted, directing a lot of his mental energy inward.
S vs. N: I think Hatori is more Sensing, preferring to work with concrete information.
T vs. F: Hatori is highly Thinking, making decisions based on logic and rational consequences.
J vs. P: Hatori is highly Judging, which aligns with his Enneagram of One (a Gut type with a strong framework of right and wrong).
Type Dynamics: Without working out what an ISTJ's type dynamics are (since that's my most likely guess for Hatori), I see his Type Dynamics as Si Te Fi Ne.
Si: Hatori prefers predictability and routine. He uses concrete data from the past to inform his perspective in the present.
Te: Hatori looks to external rules and systems for order and consistency.
Fi: Hatori keeps his feelings under wraps, but he has strong values and holds himself to those values. "Empathetic, sensitive, and idealistic."
Ne: Hatori can sometimes catastrophize by "attribut[ing] meaning where there is no meaning." An example of this would be how he believes he is not meant to be happy after he erases Kana's memories. That's an exaggerated response to (admittedly extreme) stress, typical of how people with Ne as their Inferior process might catastrophize.
Si Te Fi Ne is the type dynamic of ISTJ!
Here's how the Myers & Briggs Foundation describes ISTJ:
ISTJ: Quiet, serious, earn success by being thorough and dependable. Practical, matter-of-fact, realistic, and responsible. Decide logically what should be done and work toward it steadily, regardless of distractions. Take pleasure in making everything orderly and organized—their work, their home, their life. Value traditions and loyalty.
INFJs are often referred to as "The Inspector."
So, to summarize:
Enneagram: SO 1w9 (The Reformer/The Idealist)
Tritype: 3-5-1 (The Technical Expert)
MBTI: ISTJ (The Inspector)
Hatori is a lot of firsts in this series! He's the first One, the first Social subtype, and the first T Myers-Briggs type!
What do you think? Did I get it right or wrong? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Next up: Ayame!
Fruits Basket Personality Types: Enneagram | MBTI | Tohru | Akito | Kyo | Yuki | Haru | Kisa | Momiji | Ayame | Rin | Hiro | Ritsu | Kureno | Shigure | Kagura | Kazuma | Saki | Arisa | Machi | Kakeru | The Hondas | Kaibara Students

Now that I've finished Pokemon: Violet I need to get out this opinion I had.
Team Star was the weakest part of the game. I get they were all bullied and banded together and were all about FRIENDSHIP and ACKSHUALLY NOT BAD AT ALL in a big shock twist, but it just felt weak.
So, what, ONLY the bullies left school, every single one of them... because? ALL the teachers resigned cause they felt bad it happened/they made a mistake? ALL OF THEM? Team Star is considered the bullies because... they stupidly threatened their bullies with violence in retaliation and literally no other students stood up for them or talked to a teacher about things they witnessed?
You kind of get an idea why they were bullied (Mela was TOO CUTE and so everyone hated her, also she started acting mean to fight it? Atticus... liked clothes from an era past. WAT), but it’s for such random stuff and just seems really shoe-horned in. I don’t mind bullying being a plot in Pokemon with how big an issue it is for children/teens, but it just seemed very clumsy and uninteresting as a whole.
Also it's never talked about anywhere else in the game. No other students come off as particularly shitty, it's all contained in the Team Star plot bubble. So it feels really off and like it's not a deeper problem in the school like Clavell alludes to. Maybe because I recently played Lost Judgment, and bullying was a huge part of the game and ran deep within the story and affected so many characters mentally and emotionally, but it just felt so weak and surface that outside of the Team Star plotline, there’s no real indicator that it truly affected much of anything. Like it was put in there because Pokemon games of the past had Team (X) you had to fight against, so they needed a tie-in with the school. It’s a kids game, so I don’t expect it to be on the same level of Judgment, but kids are smart and they could’ve done SOMETHING MORE within the plotline considering how bullying can have such an impact on someone.
Bullying happens, it sucks, but it just fell flat to me. It didn't help that it felt like they were trying to build up for the big Penny/Casseiopeia reveal (which, I know it’s a kid’s game, but it wasn’t surprising considering how important they make Penny, who you barely interact with, seem) while also, in my opinion, not doing much to make me care about her. She's a loner and ALSO got bullied... but a sad backstory does not make me care. She gives me stuff and leaves, also gets annoyed at my pet dragon. Piss off, Penny.
Hell, Clavell mentions how SAD AND TRAGIC Casseiopeia is, but you... never find out why. Penny vaguely mentions being ignored when she was at school during dialogue when you’re at Area Zero, but other than that, it doesn’t really explain why her story is so tragic and SAD. Someone mentions she locked herself inside of her room, but again, it’s barely brought up and we never SEE why it’s truly so tragic. Also, despite having never met Team Star, they absolutely love Penny and trip over themselves talking about how GREAT she is because... she made them all a team together, I guess. I don’t know, it seems badly explained.
Them loving each other makes sense because they seemed like they were the misfits who found each other through the common theme of being bullied and created a bond, but they themselves say they don’t know Casseiopeia’s true identity, so I’m unsure how much they truly actually KNOW their boss. But for the sake of Pokemon’s underlying theme of friendship... obviously Penny is their queen. I guess because she did all of it for their sake of being bullied, BUT... it just seemed like a lot ass kissing for more or less a stranger. Being thankful, fine, but it just felt like mary-sue levels of praise to me when they all finally got together.
Yes, the player gets praise as well as the game progresses, but it never seems at the same level, and it at least makes sense within the context that as a new Pokemon trainer, they’re making huge strides in the Pokemon world and quickly becomes a new Champion trainer.
So it feels like a lot of build-up for a pretty meh conclusion. While it does turn out Team Star is largely misunderstood because they were bullies, they get slaps on the wrist for punishment (despite threatening violence to their bullies, I DON’T CARE IF IT WAS IN RETALIATION) even though the game makes it seem like they harass other students into joining their gang. It truly felt like if they removed the Team Star and Penny stuff, the plot would remain largely the same, but with less annoying Penny dialogue during the Area Zero section near the end of the game.
I dunno. I don't mind the "sooper skilled hacker grrl" trope, but they just do a poor job of making me care about Penny at all like with Arven and Nemona. Arven and Nemona were kind of annoying at first, but spending time with them and the interactions they have with the player just endeared them to me. It feels like Penny is just kinda rude about Nemona and Arven when everyone interacts in Area Zero, makes sly digs at them, and it just gets largely ignored/passed off as “lol she’s just a quiet, shy uwu loner anime-loving gworl” and it’s annoying.
But otherwise? I loved the new Pokemon. The leaders were fun and had some personality outside of “oh, they’re gym leaders,” I thought the little storylines for the teachers were a cute addition, and I liked running around Paldea seeing the sights and watching the game struggle with its framerate at times. The pokedex having little “magazine covers” for each pokemon was a nice touch and gives a bit more incentive to fill up every entry.
I will say I don’t understand if there’s a point to going to classes outside of learning about lore/game mechanics, especially as someone whose played most of the Pokemon games (I never played Sun/Moon or Sword/Shield, but the game still keeps a lot of the same general gameplay stuff), but aside from math, even the class aspects were good for a refresher on the workings of Pokemon. And truly, my biggest gripe with the math stuff is that I struggle with worded math problems due to reading comprenhension. BUT Ms. Tyme was great and learning the maths behind pokemon battles was fun regardless.
But, yeah, Team Star? MEH. Penny? DOUBLE MEH. It just felt like a weak tie-in to the rest of the story as a whole and, as I said, felt like the game would function practically the same without it. But despite it, I thought the game was still pretty fun! :)

Nice semicolon!
I'm putting this long post under a readmore mostly because I imagine fewer people will read it and therefore there is less chance it is misinterpreted as me having a go at anyone.
This is a post that is mostly I think about a certain sort of resignation at worst, acceptance at best that popular discourse just doesn't reflect my own reality.
There's a meme in the board game world of mentioning your hobby to someone not versed in it and the response is usually "like monopoly?" or sometimes scrabble, or some other mass market game. The typical response is to complain about this. I play board games in public somewhat regularly and you often get at least one bystander strike up some sort of conversation to ask what it is you're doing and I used to explain more about what the game is about and what sorts of games I like to play, but nowadays if they say "oh so it's like *mass market game*" I just say yeah, kind of. Part of it is that there is too much context to properly explain it a lot of the time, I was playing Puzzle Strike the other day and when a bystander asked what it was about I just blanked because I can't start by explaining that there was this card game called Dominion, right? And that invented a genre called deckbuilding. At the same time there's this guy that used to be a pro Street Fighter player who didn't get the license to make a Street Fighter card game so he made his own knockoff characters and... So I just said yeah it was similar to whatever game they mentioned. The good faith interpretation is that people want to relate by bringing up something they know and finding common ground. The cynical interpretation is that people don't really care about what you're really doing, they want to find a box to sort you into that most closely matches a box they already have constructed in their head. When it's about board games the latter is kind of harmless really but I try to believe that it's the former as much as I can.
I've said before that I'm not really into being called nonbinary. I don't have or want a gender, I resent being given one. The closest term I ID with these days would be agender but even then not really, I think part of the thing is that any classification suggests that I believe gender applies in any way to me. The crux of my problem is that with how entrenched gender is in society, it is difficult to dismantle the concept's importance, but it is much easier to say that there is now a third thing you can be. And I think that's kind of where we are in many circles. Your gender dropdown menus with man/woman/other, your X gender marker on passports, your Joe Biden saying there are "at least three" genders. My own personal example of this was not ticking a title on my application form for the teachers' union (because I do not have or want a title) and getting back my ID card belonging to "Mx. Hounds". This is also where I think enby misses the mark, I think the idea to have an affectionate/cutesy equivalent of boy/girl is good, but I think the invented word should have been a gender neutral term.
I've only really ever made one public statement to people I know offline, a "coming out" post on facebook a few years ago. I remember thinking about this problem when writing it and I wrote that what I was was "sort of like nonbinary but I don't really gel with that term" or something like that because I understand what I have going on isn't really something that's as popularly talked about. The general response was positive! But I think the takeaway that many people made if they made one at all was simply "Kendall is nonbinary".
And this is where we reach the comparison, and I try to avoid the cynical idea that people are just trying to categorise, and instead focus on the idea that people are really trying to relate something complex to something that they have more experience with and that they understand. Because that's a good thing! It is nice that people will see me playing a board game in public and want to have a moment of connection, rather than an alternative interaction which is to call me a fucking nerd and get aggro. And it is nice and good and cool that people know something more than just male and female, and that they are trying. So when someone calls me nonbinary, or includes me in a group with "guys, gals, and nonbinary pals" or whatever, there is a lot of context that would need explaining and in my experience people don't like being corrected on sensitive things like this, so I try to have that good faith interpretation, I say that's a fight I lost, and I shrug and I say "yeah, like monopoly".
p.s. if you read this can you please reassure me that no one is going to hate me over this post
I don't really id as nonbinary and I especially don't id with the term enby but that's a fight I lost a long time ago. It's like telling people I'm into board games, they say "oh like monopoly?" And I just shrug and say "yeah kinda." Not worth the effort to clarify.

Bill and Ted dating a smart girl would include~
Tumblr media
(Not my gif)(Requested by anonymous)
(I chose to do poly hcs. Hope you enjoy!)
- The social hierarchy of the 1980s rarely ever favored academics. Your intimate connection to the "geeks and creeps" of your school did you more harm than good and by your junior year of high school, you were about as relevant as the spare textbooks in the back of your classroom.
- People didn't pay attention to you unless they needed to, and though you would have liked for the boys in your class to ask you out, you got over it and settled for artfully suppressing your disappointment whenever their purposeful greetings led to an answered question about Alexander the great instead of an invitation to a movie.
- But resignation rarely ever alludes to cheerful acceptance. You weren't proud that all people knew about you was the fact that you were intelligent and after years of being cast aside until you were useful, you were tired of playing teacher.
- Fortunately for them, Bill and Ted were just pathetic enough to strike a cord within you and get you to agree to help them.
- That was how your relationship started: you tutoring them in an effort to ensure that they didn't flunk the grade and them staring at you with heart eyes while you rambled on about things that their little pea brains could barely comprehend.
- They didn't immediately take notice of how pretty you are, but when you're sat right next to/across from someone for hours at a time, it's kind of difficult not to realize how attractive they are; and how attractive their personality is.
- Which would ultimately lead to the two of them asking about your dating status and being genuinely surprised that you weren’t dating anybody.
- A bodacious and excellent babe like you was a hot commodity in San Dimas and they weren’t about to let you think you were anything less than that. So when you awkwardly explained how you “could possibly not have a boyfriend”, they very earnestly replied that they would date you in a heartbeat.
- And it wasn’t long before they made that confession into a reality and asked you out for real.
- You might not think that you’re anything to write home about but your boys think you’re excellent and are always quick to brag. They think it’s a miracle that they managed to score a brilliant babe like you and they want everyone to know that the three of you are together.
- It probably shouldn't come as a surprise but Teds father actually considers you to be a good influence and lets Ted off the hook on occasion because of it. All he has to do is lie that he was with you and his father will begrudgingly accept it; even though he was most certainly just having band practice with Bill.
- Your first family dinner at the Logan house was very awkward but at least he was able to impress his father by bringing up your grades/academic accomplishments! Nothing better than being able to cut the silence/uncomfortable conversation about his shortcomings with a comment about how you won the science fair!
- But, given your usual friend group and the fact that you’re a promising young woman, your parents probably aren’t too fond of them and consider them to be “bad influences”. They’re two naturally stoned boys in a rock band, how much worse could they be?!?
- Sooo many compliments and oddly specific nicknames surrounding your intelligence. They couldn’t be assed about school 90% of the time but they’ll somehow reference a random scientist from the 1950s whenever you’re in the middle of doing a biology project.
- Study dates. Though you honestly shouldn’t even consider them dates; given how much work they wind up being.
- Ted is terrible to tutor because he’s awful at sitting down and just focusing on one thing at a time, while Bill is better at paying attention; especially when you’re consistently pointing him in the right direction and explaining things clearly.
- Try to make your handwriting as legible as possible because they’re consistently copying off of your notes and homework; even in classes you don’t share with them.
- They don’t remember when their own tests are but you can rest assured that they remember yours. They always make an effort to see you before them and wish you good luck; and most of the time you’ll then have to remind them that they’ve got their own that day as well.
- You study in the library during lunch and they take naps around you like two little himbo kittens.
- Them getting you to take breaks from studying and doing your homework so you can let loose and relax for a change. Ya know babe, when you start to get a migraine, it usually means that it’s time to stop reading....
- Once all your teachers realize that the three of you are now “friends” they lowkey take you aside and subtly hint that you should help the boys out with their studies.
- Neither of them bother to read most of the time but they like having you explain the plots of books to them whenever there’s a need for sound. They gush about bands and albums to you in return.
- Them trying to impress you with stories from their travels in history. Although, depending on when the three of you got together, you probably accompanied them on at least one of their adventures.
- They fully believe that you can answer every single problem and question that they may have. To them, your intelligence knows no bounds. They don’t know the answer to something? Time to pack up and go see y/n/n. You’re the 80s equivalent to Wikipedia.
- I wholeheartedly believe that you’d become their manager, or that they’d at least try to make you become their manager because “you’re smart” and what other qualifications are there?

rewatching that glee vid here are some of my favorite quotes
Will Schuester the Spanish teacher arrives at William McKinley high school in his shitmobile
This is a message directly for Will Schuester. *silence* That is all
Bye glee club I’m resigning bc I need to be an accountant to make money for my child bc my teacher’s salary of two dollars per year is simply not enough
Mike, Matt, and Puck choose the glee club, and Finn chooses the football team bc he flopped
I’m going to give Tina the award for emo fashion slay bc on rewatch, she’s still demolishing the fashion game while everyone else is serving milk
Let me postpone my wedding for a few hours so i can take these little rats to sectionals
Rachel meets Jesse St James, who is played by Jonathan Groff who’s Kristoff in Frozen. The first of TWO Frozen girlies introduced in this episode
After the frighteningly sudden flop aura of episode 14...
All of the boys except for Kurt are like “booo this is so boring” uh but at the end of the day who got the clicks views and engagement? The girls. And who fell off the charts? The boys
One thing about Joey? He’s gonna run
The fact that all it took was empty christmas light boxes and red chantilly lace to know they were doing Gaga. Yeah. See when you’re a legend, these things are just common knowledge
Karofsky and Azimio push Kurt and Tina into the lockers for dressing up. Did somebody say. assault?
Meanwhile the boys are like “boo lady gaga boo we can’t sing lady gaga, lady gaga’s for girls” first of all shut the fuck up
Finn loses it and uses the F slur, and I’m not talking about “flop”
The scenes of Quinn yelling in the hospital while giving birth cut in between clips of Vocal Adrenaline singing Bohemian Rhapsody and it’s all synced up? Like I’m sorry, but you have to be a little bit of a genius to think of something like that
Honestly less schoolwork happens in Glee than in Euphoria and I’m pretty sure Maddy Perez doesn’t even own a pen
-
I’m kind of Sam Evans coded if you think about it
We also have Rachel performing Baby One More Time and she unfortunately mega slays. And I’m saying “unfortunately” bc minutes before, she tells Finn that she doesn’t want him to become popular again bc she wants to be the only thing that makes him feel good
Episode four we have a Santana and Mercedes duet mega slay supreme
Episodes six is a little bit of a collapse
Kurt confronts Karofsky and Karofsky grabs Kurt and forcibly kisses him. Wooow, we love the repressed sexual orientation to homophobic bully pipeline. Someone call Paige McCullers and Alison Dilaurentis
There’s also a lot of Karofsky plot and I’m just like “I don’t care. I don’t want to see a redemption arc for this character”
We also find out Will sings to sick kids in the hospital. Try as I might I just can’t spin that as a negative. And I did try
I will be punishing Artie for rapping too much. He’s hit the threshold of Schuester
She writes a song called My Headband and it’s an instant classic
Kurt goes clown mode and tells Blaine bisexuality isn’t real. Kurt flopped I’m afraid
Karofsky apologizes to Kurt for being basically the worst person in the milky way and probably in alpha centauri as well
Who is voted prom queen? Kurt. But not in a yas slay kind of way
Finn flopped disastrously again but this time it was on a national stage
-
Everyone’s like “quinn this isnt you quinn naur” but the thing is. she slayed
Mercedes convinces Santana and Brittany to join the Troubletones. And they are already on explosive mega slay mode with only four members. They sing Candyman and it’s an Event
My notes for episode five are basically “why does Blaine dress like he’s 50 years old”
Kurt Blaine and Sebastian go to a gay bar and they run into Dave Karofsky. Who has changed schools and accepted himself so he’s no longer the world’s most homophobic super villain
Next we have Santana and the squad singing a very topical version of I Kissed A Girl
Kurt and Sebastian are having more beef and Kurt says “I don’t like your obnoxious CW hair” which is actually so wild bc Grant Gustin ends up playing The Flash on CW’s The Flash. So he literally does have CW hair. It was a prophetic read
Oh my god also the fact that Santana and Mercedes were gone from the club, Rachel was suspended, and Kurt STILL didn’t get a solo performance at a competition. It’s so bad for him right now!
Rachel accepts Finn’s proposal. ... Nobody moved. Nobody clicked. Nobody viewed. Nobody engaged. Well-
In episode 13 we meet Rachel’s dads, Hiram and Leroy. Yes that’s Jeff Goldblum
The football team at Karofsky’s new school finds out he’s gay and he tries to S word. And then like five minutes later it’s fucking regionals! The way that Glee goes from 0 to 100 to 0 to 90 to 30 to 0 to 55 to 0 in the space of like five minutes. Can we all just calm down??
In episode 15 Quinn’s in a wheelchair but more importantly Sugar has a really good outfit. Kurt also has a leather Gucci tie
Merslaydes
Rachel is in shambles. This is the scene of the historically important “pleek”
anyway go watch the video if you haven’t yet xx we need more good glee content

No because I seriously think about Hunter joining the Hexsquad during season one all the time. Just… randomly being apart of their hijinks. He has no reason to be there and he won’t admit that they’re friends but sure he’ll tag along to Grom with everyone. Running commentary with Gus on the sidelines during the grudgby game. Awkwardly pretending he doesn’t know Luz and Willow and Gus at the end of S1. Joining them afterwards because he’s pitted against Belos when Eda was almost killed, and hey he has a support system now, so he leaves (unrealistic I know). Enrolling at hexside at the beginning of S2 and ONE WEEK in he gets expelled and he’s just like “are you fucking with me right now.” I think about this so much.
"ARE YOU FUCKING WITH ME RIGHT NOW" THIS IS SO FUNNY, Odalia fucking nerfed him right out of the gate.
But okay okay what if. what if.
AU where everything is the same except after Luz enrolls in Hexside the Golden Guard is stationed at the school to keep an eye on her. (Belos is very interested in the Human's presence on the Isles.) There's obviously some cover story about monitoring the staff and student body for legal magic usage but Luz is absolutely his main priority.
But it's like. This job is so fucking boring. He can't just follow Luz from class to class without arousing suspicion and Bump requested that he sit in on less classes because he has a tendency open his mouth and just completely take over the lesson from the teacher and there have been a lot of complaints from the staff about him. So he's mostly resigned to slinking around the hallways and the courtyard.
But like. EVENTUALLY, he starts having these short casual interactions with Luz, and by extension the people she surrounds herself with. Just cuz he gets bored and there's nothing suspicious about a little chitchat. And at first Willow and Gus are starstruck and Amity tries to impress him, hoping he'll send a good word to the Emperor’s Coven about her. But after a while they just. Get used to his presence. While he starts magnetizing towards them more and more. He'll occasionally drop in on the four of them gathered around the stairs and be like "sup" and they're like "oh hey GG, do you want half of my sandwich?"
They still never see his face, they still never learn his name and it is ABSOLUTELY seperate Tides era GG!Hunter that we're dealing with here. The one who's got all this cockiness and bravado that comes from the mask. He's hanging around for most season 1 adventures that are hexside related. He goes to grom with them, he sticks around for the whole grudgby thing etc. If you asked Luz, Amity, Willow and Gus about it they'd be like "yeah he's our buddy :)"
Hunter, meanwhile, SWEARS that he only hangs out with them due to boredom. He thinks they're alright but he doesn't have any special attachment to any of them. But unfortunately, he is Hunter who has a tendency to become ride-or-die towards anyone who is nice to him. However, the beauty of the mask and uniform is that it makes him a lot better at hiding most of his emotions. He's air of indifference towards them is extremely convincing.
But also Hunter is still deeply linked to Belos and due to his relationship with the other kids not being exactly intimate, he still doesn't really have the strength (or the desire) to break away from his Coven. So he is still very firmly on the Emperor's side.
The fucking. Petrification of Eda incident.
Scout: Sir, there are some kids in town spouting anti-monarchist speech to a crowd
Hunter: What kind of idiots would do that?
*heads into town to find Willow and Gus up on a stage*
Hunter: OH NO THOSE ARE MY IDIOTS
And then. After Lilith is branded as a traitor, Hunter is promoted to Coven Head. So he's removed from his hexside duty because he now has more pressing matters to deal with. But it puts a bit of a rift between his relationship with Luz and the others, as Hunter is still fundamentally loyal to Belos and he takes his new position very seriously.
The events of Seperate Tides still happens, the only difference being that Luz is like "What the heck, man?? I thought we were friends??"
"You thought wrong :)"
All the other Hunter centric episodes happen, there's just an added familiarity between him and the other kids, making his actions against them way more personal.

I wanna talk about Janet Drake
I’m not against exaggeratedly evil versions of Tim’s parents, tbh. It’s fanfiction, if we can depict an Exaggeratedly Good version of Bruce (which we can, and I do, and I love) then we can depict the Drakes as Exaggeratedly Bad. As someone who personally identifies with Tim, and his brand of complicated parental abuse in particular, I find it cathartic to uncomplicate that abuse and rescue him from the Obviously Evil Bad People.
That said, since much of comics lore is passed down word of mouth, the oral tradition surrounding Tim has developed this idea of Janet as The Worse Parent between her and Jack that was never really present in the comics. We see much LESS of Janet, and we have 20 years worth of comics depicting Jack as a neglectful hotheaded idiot who ultimate does love his son. More importantly, Jack isn’t very much LIKE Tim, so there is a habit to attribute Tim’s traits to his mother... and, as someone who really really identifies with Tim, Tim has... some negative traits. Tim can be a bitch sometimes. He’s fiercely intelligent and sweet and kind, with a strong sense of justice, but he can be cold and judgmental and unthinking - he fights those traits, but he does have them.
And it is perfectly fine to depict Janet that way. I’ve enjoyed depictions of Cold Calculating Janet Drake, but it’s not the ONLY option, and I want to challenge fans to consider different avenues. Tim could pick up these traits from anywhere: a nanny, Mrs. Mc Ilvaine (”Mrs. Mac”), a teacher, tv, Sherlock Holmes novels, Bruce Wayne himself. Tim is capable of not being like EITHER parent.
So, what do we KNOW about Janet? (I’ll also touch on Jack, but only in scenes he appears with Janet.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Janet was first introduced she was depicted as a gentle but “modern” woman. This was written in 1989, told by a 13 year old Tim, so this theoretically was meant to take place in 1979. I’m not here to give a lecture on the history of sex discrimination in the united states, but much of the legislation protecting women in the workforce or surrounding women’s bodily autonomy would have been very very new in this initial depiction.
Here, Janet is shown to be encouraging, emotional, maternal, and projects her own feelings onto Tim. Jack is shown to be slightly sexist, possibly discouraging, but not overbearing. And the artist is shown not to know how to draw children.
To insert some speculation, I think it’s important to note all the Drakes witnessed a terrible murder/accident that day. I point this out, because this is the last time Jack and Janet are depicted this way. It’s possible they changed as a result of this event specifically.
However, this is also a story being told by Tim. It’s also possible these events aren’t really “real” at all, and Tim is misremembering what his parents were like as a three-year-old, possibly projecting a more palatable version of his parents into the narrative. This is entirely up to personal interpretation.
Tumblr media
In fact, the Drakes are shown in Legend of the Dark Knight attending Haly’s Circus, and the artist knows what a toddler looks like and they’re depicted as already having a slightly strained relationship. Jack is clearly on the defensive, and Janet seems to be passive-aggressive, though she could just be attempting to explain the situation to her toddler honestly. The intended tone isn’t especially clear.
I do want to point out, in this depiction, Tim isn’t being carried like he was in the previous one. He’s walking ahead of his parents, which isn’t a terrible horrible crime, but could be dangerous in a crowded place like the circus. Might be a subtle hint to his parents overall neglect.
Tumblr media
Back to A Lonely Place of Dying, in Tim’s memories of the night he discovered Robin and Dick Grayson were the same person at nine-years-old, his parents are home, and watching TV together while Tim played... trucks, idk, in the living room with them. (This is semi-interesting, because you could say “oh, Tim liked vehicle toys as a kid” or you could extrapolate that this is another subtle indication of Jack’s sexism, providing Tim with appropriately “boy toys.” Either interpretation is valid. If Tim was assigned female at birth, would they have been given “girl toys,” or allowed to play with whatever they wanted?)
This is, to my knowledge, the only panel of the Drakes when Tim is between ages 3 and 13. They’re all together, which might indicate that the Drakes were home more often when Tim was 9, only later going on business trips when Tim was “old enough” but...
Tumblr media
This is Tim’s boarding school when he’s 13. While most boarding schools in the US are for grades 9-12, Tim is clearly not a freshman at age 13; look how much younger the other kids in this panel are. In the US, the youngest you can attend most boarding schools is 7.
That means Tim could have begun going to boarding school anytime between 7 and 13. He most likely spent all of middle school in boarding school, at least. There are an almost infinite number of possible ways the Drakes handled having a business that required lots of international travel, an archeology hobby, AND a very young child. Janet staying home until Tim was 7, 11, 13, is equally possible as the Drakes having a nanny until 7, 11, 13. Tim just doesn’t talk about that period of his life very much.
(”What about Mrs. Mac?” - it is unclear when Mrs. Mac begins working for the Drakes. We only see her when Jack comes out of his coma. She could either be a long standing staff member, or a recent hire.)
Note: I’ve seen it said that it’s canon that “According to Tim, when his parents were home, they made a point to try and include him in their activities, bringing him along to events that were normally adults only.” I have never seen this panel, or I don’t remember it, so I cannot confirm, but I also cannot debunk this because... comics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the time Tim is 13, Jack and Janet are away on business trips a lot, with limited communication, and no firm return date. If I’m feeling generous, I’d say it was harder to communicate internationally in 1990 than it is today. If I’m not feeling generous, I’d say the Drakes are extremely wealthy, and international communication was easier than ever before in the 80s and 90s. They’re not even going home to see Tim in a week or two, they’re going home and calling Tim at boarding school in a week or two.
Even Bruce thinks its weird, though he doesn’t say so to Tim’s face. It’s written almost as if Tim’s parents’ neglect was meant to be a plot point that just got forgotten about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tim’s parents are fighting at this point (their poor assistant), but Janet still goes with Jack on these business trips. And she’s clearly involved in the business, somehow, but the comics never SAY what Janet’s JOB is. We’re told Jack is the exec, but Janet is ONLY ever referred to as Jack’s wife, though they’re later described as the “heads” of the company, plural.
Just to be clear, this is Jack’s business. There’s a perception that Jack is a bad business man because he and Janet fight over company decisions, and Jack looses the business after Janet dies, but Jack looses the company YEARS after Janet dies, and maintains it for about a year after No Man’s Land at that. We’re not told how Jack looses the business, but he’s got to be doing something right. Janet isn’t necessarily the “real brains” of Drake Industries.
And I’m not... gonna... touch the... exploitation and racism because... I’m not qualified to do that. But, here’s the panel. The Drakes sure seem exploitative and racist in their business decisions. Someone else can... analyze that with more nuance.
Tumblr media
Regardless how how long they’ve been fighting, when their lives are in danger, the Drakes fall back into a loving husband and wife. Their marriage may be falling apart, but they do care about each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want to show these panels because it shows that Tim and Jack do have things in common. They’re both level headed in a crisis and can be somewhat cold in their practicality. Janet meanwhile and silent. Jack is later willing rant and rave at their captors, but Janet remains silent.
Tumblr media
That is, until they’re alone, and she finally lets herself fall apart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
God, Jack can be obnoxious. Janet just looks miserable and resigned. I actually think Tim takes after his parents in this respect in equal measure. Tim can have a temper, but he can also be fairly melancholy and defeatist.
Jack keeps reminding Janet to be strong and in control, which could be period typical sexism? But Jack seems so practiced and ready with the words of encouragement, and with Tim’s history with depression, I wonder if Janet has an inclination towards it as well.
Tumblr media
As the end approaches, when Jack brings up Tim, Janet seems to have a lot of regret. She talks about “wasting” the good things, and I don’t think it’s too big of a stretch to assume she’s talking about time spent with her only child.
Tumblr media
From this point on, Janet is at times spoken of, but not seen. Like here, when Jack says Janet wouldn’t approve of him and Tim being so “far apart.” He says this after he tells him he takes back his threat to send him back to boarding school, which might imply Janet was against the idea of boarding school? Though she obviously lost that argument when she was alive.
Jack will of course renege on this later, but that’s Jack Drake for you.
Tumblr media
Or here in Tim’s illness induced dream, where he gets everything he wants. Though, since this is a fantasy of Tim’s, where his father and girlfriend are both more accepting and understanding than they are in real life, I would take this depiction of Janet with a grain of salt.
Tumblr media
After loosing Drake Industries, Jack thinks about Janet (though, they call her Catherine/Cathy for some fucking reason) during his depressive episode. And... uh...
Tumblr media
Hallucinates a Valkyrie???? Is this symbolic of suicidal thoughts, or is she... real? Or is he seriously hallucinating?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, we’re not here to discuss Jack’s mental state, the fact that he forgot Tim’s birthday, or that concerning “I was going to knock some sense into you but you’re still bigger than me” statement from Tim, we’re here to talk about Janet. And even though this entire arc is about Jack mourning his first wife, they don’t SAY anything about Janet herself at all. I mean, they don’t even get her name right, so I guess what was I expecting.
Tumblr media
Then there’s Origins and Omens, which also doesn’t say anything about Janet, except that Tim’s memory of her is faulty - Janet was poisoned, her assistant Jeremy’s throat was slit on television, but Tim seems to have conflated the death he did see with the death he didn’t.
Tumblr media
The only piece of canon to suggest that Janet might be cold, is Tim compares her to Thalia. And even then, he’s really just saying Janet was protective of him. It’s kind of a scary look to make at your kid, but Bruce does the same thing, so.
I do want to say... it’s not 100% clear if Tim is even talking about Janet. He could be talking about Dana. Dana was observably protective of Tim, though I don’t think he’s ever called her mom. He PROBABLY means Janet.
Tumblr media
And finally we have Tim visiting his mother’s grave (in a duel Christian/Jewish cemetery, make of that what you will), where Tim says she was “a little religious.”
And that’s it! That is all we know about Janet Drake in New Earth. Hardly the Mom From Hell, but she isn’t perfect. I’d be interested in seeing some alternate depictions of her within the fandom.
I’m still gonna eat up Terrible Parents From Hell like a starving puppy dog, though. Just some food for creative thought.

At first sight
Tumblr media
A job in a world-famous college that graduates the best magicians should be just as prestigious. At least this was the first thing that comes to mind. At least that's what you thought when you accepted the invitation and got a job.
Perhaps the profession of a librarian was not bad, as it might seem at first glance. You loved books, it couldn't be denied. So much so that you would have got a job in a bookstore if you hadn't got here. Nevertheless, when you are charged with more than your responsibilities, when you have to stay overtime and you are not paid extra for it, because “it’s purely your initiative and commendable zeal in work”... you want to strangle a kind director, no less. Perhaps you would go even further if you had given the opportunity.
Unfortunately, such a chance did not want to appear even in the foreseeable future. As if Crowley knew about everything that was going on in your head and disappeared from the office in time, as soon as you had the desire to go to him and hit for all the good and bad. There was much more of this 'bad'.
Wandering between the shelves, you could not help but lament. It felt like you were the first librarian in the entire history of the college. Of course, the ghosts didn't have to pay. How, with such logic, the director decided to fork out for a living person a question to which there was no answer. So you thought the first week. When the history teacher approached you for the first time with a request to find the necessary materials for the lesson, you did not think anything suspicious. Good relationships in the team were the key to long-term and stable work.
The second time you blamed it on a coincidence.
On the third, you began to suspect something was wrong.
In the fourth, you were finally convinced.
Apparently, the previous teachers complained to Crowley and threatened to fire massively if he went for the trick. Greed would not allow him to hire assistant for each of them, but one librarian, who would take all the work, easy. This fresh blood turned out to be you. Nevertheless, it was stupid to quit at the very beginning, so you promised yourself to hold out at least until the end of the college year. However, you strongly doubted that other teachers would not understand the reason for your sudden escape.
So with a creak, you slowly resigned yourself to the trap into which you voluntarily stepped, and tried to look for the pros. Like serving out of queue in a cafeteria, nice and polite students like Riddle Rosehearts or being able to freely read any books and manuals in the library. However, there was just one minus, which outweighed all sorts of advantages.
Divus Crewel.
Sometimes you wondered who was in the first place on your personal list in the death note, the Potions teacher or the principal. As soon as you took one look at the man at the beginning of the year, you realize that you two definitely wouldn't get along with. There was something in him that caused you rejection, and thanks to one lesson, for the time of which you were appointed his laboratory assistant, you were finally convinced of this. As strange as it sounds, you were more into working with Professor Trein. At least with him you didn't feel like you were being treated like the last idiot.
You knew very well about Crewel's teaching style, you saw it with your own eyes. However, you could not imagine that he would not distinguish between attitudes towards students and colleagues or maybe he treated like that only you. Was it because you had less work experience than everyone else? Or maybe because you were younger than him?
However, that didn’t give him any right to apply 'training techniques' to you, you reminded yourself.
"What have I done to him?" The get-togethers after work at Sam's shop had become your favorite pastime. “Or should I ask what I did in my past life? Maybe I was a hardened criminal. But even so, it doesn't justify my present!"
A man in such moments never answered, just giving you the opportunity to speak out. To be honest, you were wondering why he decided to open a shop in college. For what reason Crowley gave his permission. However, you had already convinced yourself from your own experience that anything could be expected from this raven.
"Do you have any cursed object like a voodoo doll?" Asking as a joke, you did not expect to hear the answer, as usual, but as soon as the man began the phrase `IN STOCK NOW`, you immediately added. "Thank you, I'll take note of it."
Pouring grief with green tea, because students and all the cases, you bought a few bottles with you. You still had to somehow survive the next day, week, to the end of the year, but despite the late hour, you couldn`t go to the teachers' corps. Actually, that was the reason why you went to complain to Sam, although you usually did it at the end of the week before the weekend.
Sighing through the long list of required manuals, you wanted to cry. It took at least an hour to collect this, especially that books of different categories were required. As if, a devil deliberately tossed a job. Having felt his character on yourself, you could not help but sympathize with the first years, but you for yourself felt sorry most of all.
Reaching for the latest books, you mentally regretted not buying that doll. The temptation was too great. You could always try to pour a poison, but you doubted that the attempt would be successful. After all, trying to poison a potions teacher was like challenging a strategist in chess. Equally useless, and you were not so desperate. However, this did not mean that you wouldn't curse the principal and one teacher with all your swear words vocabulary.
Step by step, approaching your table with a neat stack, you could not contain a sigh of despair. The exam season had begun, so you were more tired than usual. Many students, like you when you were young, started preparing at the last moment. In other words, the library had become a new favorite and most visited place.
"At this late hour, all the puppies should be asleep."
From further thoughts of self-pity, you were distracted by a familiar voice that you would rather not hear. However, life rarely goes the way we want. So the contender for the first place on the list has come to torture with his presence.
You raised your head and looked at man, whose wore his significant white-and-black coat. On his face were this smile full of confidence that annoyed you so much.
“I wonder whose fault the puppies can't go for a well-deserved rest,” you replied in your usual manner. After some time, you stopped hiding your dissatisfaction, so even students knew perfectly well about your tense relationship. "Maybe the puppy itself with pleasure would go to bed an hour ago. Probably, it voluntarily decided to go around the library up and down. After all, there are still may be places that it does not know about."
Someone make poisons literally, while you put figurative one into words, sugaring it with smile that only at first sight seemed polite.
"If this puppy had correctly prioritized and hadn't taken on the task at the very last moment, it would have been home already. Lack of discipline is a serious problem."
"However it's not for you to teach it discipline."
Despite the lack of good feelings, you could not deny the pleasure of exchanging barbs. Someone once said that there are personalities whose pleasant to disike. It seems that you finally fully realized the meaning of the phrase.
“It's never too late to give a chance for re-education. Even adults can be properly trained,” judging by the lack of annoyance in his tone, you concluded that the man also enjoyed your daily skirmish. "I've never trained someone like that before, but you have to start somewhere."
"Well, the puppy will prefer to stay, and you better go to rest. Tomorrow is a hard day, and not me going to conduct a practical lesson." As soon as you felt the echoes of conscience, the mind immediately shut it up. "Have a nice evening".
Having uttered the phrase, you got up to go to your small room. If you went to the corps now, then most likely you would have to go together. You didn't need such happiness.
Just as you turned the corner, a voice rang out:
"This puppy has every chance of becoming obedient, good one. You just need to entrust it to the right trainer."
Ignoring the boiling anger, you forced yourself to move on. Naturally, this person could not leave without leaving behind the last word. It looks like Crowley will have to give his top spot on the list to another most annoying person.
