@casualavocados and I were talking about how just how much of a wakeup call watching Sailom get beat up was for Kang because it's the first time the stakes have been this real for him. Before this the stakes for Sailom were always sky high - if he loses his job, he loses his ability to make money and to contribute to paying off the debt and the rent and well, we saw what happens when he can't pay the rent. if he can't get his laptop fixed, he struggles with schoolwork and if his grades slip he loses his scholarship, his position in this school, and his ability to ever get out of this cycle of hardship he is in.

But the stakes for Kang - the worst consequence Kang faced (before Sailom punched him in the face) was his grandmother finding out about the bullying. The worst consequence for Kang was having to say sorry to Sailom. In that interaction the teacher most likely lost his job but Kang had to apologise and that was the worst consequence he has ever had. He has absolutely no consequences anywhere else - not even when he accuses Sailom of being a pedophile. The differences in their lives is so stark and I love the crashing down of everything Kang has ever known when he goes to Sailom's house.

But god, what does it say when the disapproval from his grandmother makes him lose his shit entirely. When he goes wordless and subservient when his father is around. When his father seems mild mannered and family oriented but Kang has it ingrained in his head that his father taught him that you need to break a dog's will to make him obedient. What does it say when that boy loses it at the slightest hint of disapproval from his grandmother. What does it say that even when he has to save Sailom, his brother jumps right in to take care of him as soon as he gets home. That even in all of this someone cares about Sailom.

Kang needs 10 doses of reality but he also needs some love.

What I found really interesting about today's episode of "Dangerous Romance" is how this first big conflict in Kang and Sailom's relationship ended up in Kang going back to past, comfortable, behavior. Not the bullying but he started seeing a divide again in "rich" and "poor", "us" and "them". He pushed Sailom away. Basically threw him out of his house.

Of course Kang always knew Sailom needs money but ever since he got to know him better he didn't put Sailom in a box. He didn't see Sailom as someone from "the other" side. But with his father's life in danger and Sailom's brother supposedly having taken the shot he ended up putting Sailom back in a box. A box full of dangerous and desperate people who are poor and need money.

He even told his grandmother that when the poor get desperate it's the rich that always get hurt.

Now let's look at Sailom in this episode. He was desperate for money, yes. He considered stealing that watch, hurting someone else financially, but he didn't. He ended up putting himself in danger instead. He was hurt by someone rich. He goes against everything Kang supposedly believes about him and others like him.

It feels like I am not able to truly express what I mean but I hope others get what I am trying to get across.
