I don’t think I’ve ever been compared to… Him before, so that’s an interesting observation. I believe the characters I most frequently get compared to are Lilia (by the public/readers) and Jamil (by my friends). I guess Lilia because I’ve been told it’s hard to discern my age because of how I bounce between serious analysis/advice and half legible brain rot?? And Jamil because I tend to be pragmatic and dry in private but still end up playing the part of older sibling to others.

To the comment about the income thing, it was in the context of fandom and not asking for actual financial advice. I believe the gist of the (now deleted) ask was that someone was under the impression I was frequently commissioning artwork and wondered how I afforded it. This happened a while ago so I don't remember exactly why they might have come to that conclusion. The ask wasn't phrased rudely or anything, I just found it uncomfortable because I'm not okay with telling online strangers about money, finances, my spending, etc. I think most people would be uncomfortable with that, honestly.

While I do have a tag for advice, it's reserved for like... gameplay tips and reminders on fandom etiquette. It's NOT meant to encourage people to actually come to me actively seeking counsel. (In hindsight, perhaps a poor choice of word on my part 💦) If those advice posts ended up helping you out in some way, that's great! I'm happy for you. Please just remember to not impose on me too much. (Not sure if it's the turn of season or recent fandom news, but I've been getting a lot of spam or really lengthy asks lately.) I just read your post about complacency in fandom and wanted to say that if you ever feel the need to leave this fandom, join a new one or just yap about fanculture and fan fiction as a whole, I'll still support you and your content just as much.

Because you are so correct. With the recent hype around the reboot, a large portion of this fandom seems to have shown its true colours. I joined this fandom a long, long time ago (like legit 15 years ago) and had to have a real reckoning with myself in the aftermath of jkr beginning her crusade against trans people. I decided to stay at the time, because the general tenor of fandom seemed to be ferociously anti-jkr and trans inclusive. I still felt that guilt for remaining, but I honestly think it would be bad if I didn't, it kept me reevaluating my place here and working to be as trans inclusive and ethical in my fandom participation as I possibly could.

There were always those few people who still went to the parks, bought merch etc but they seemed to be largely outside of the fanfiction community and just fans of the original books/films. The people who then dipped their toes into the fanfiction community were swiftly educated on how to ethically participate in fandom, enjoy fanfiction without profiting JKR and not engage with official hp content/ accounts.

However I think on platforms such as tiktok, the two groups have begun to merge, without people learning or respecting the culture of the fan fiction community as a whole. This also happens on booktok, with people recommending fanfiction as 'books', selling bound fanfics to people completely unaware even of what fanfiction is or that they can read it free on ao3, and just completely bypassing the fan fiction community and its etiquette. Now, when I engage with any account on (particularly) tiktok about hp content, I worry that they engage uncritically with hp and aren't above financially supporting jkr. Often now I find I'm right, and if that's not a damning indictment of the state of fandom, I don't know what is.

You and other similar content creators have played a large part in educating newcomers on how to ethically engage with hp fanfiction, which contributed to the safety I felt in fandom before, but I feel like the makeup and tenor of the fandom has changed significantly and has been changing for a while now. I feel like we are being outnumbered and our work undone by vast swathes of people, (who unapologetically engage with jkr's work and buy official HP content), joining the fan fiction community and completely ignoring the culture of the space that they have joined. And that new flood of people seems now to have given license to a more quiet group who were here before (and only performatively anti-jkr), to begin buying official merch and hyping the reboot more freely again. It's sad to know that the fandom I felt safe in might not have really been as safe as it purported to be.

Before, I also feel that just engaging with character tags and fandom specific content etc on Tumblr or tiktok wasn't so harmful as it's becoming, because the fandom stance as a whole was so anti-jkr that just by increasing the popularity of those tags you weren't necessarily putting money in jkr's pocket, but I'm not so sure about that now. If the fandom culture shifts as a whole to one that's complacent with financially profiting jkr, it's just the truth that increasing its visibility is harmful.

That's the issue I'm now grappling with myself. I can do everything I can to minimise my impact, not buy the books, not stream the movies, no merch, no studio tour etc, but just existing in this fandom now feels damaging. I now regularly donate as much as I can to trans charities, gofundmes and top-surgery funds just to minimise the impact of my engaging with this content, but unless the general culture of the fandom changes soon, I might also have to leave.

I feel that's kind of sad, because it's never going to stop those who support jkr or frankly don't care about the lives of trans people from being in this fandom, I'll just be conceding a little bit more of this space to those groups of people, but I'm just not sure what to do anymore.

So thank you, you've been such a true and honest light in this community and if you feel you have to leave, I'll follow you to whatever greener pastures lie ahead. <3

i would say good morning but its 5pm and i've just woken up (we don't talk about it) but HI !

summed it up PERFECTLY. no notes. the way tiktok works compared to other fandom spaces is so broad and it leads to so much overlap between fandom and generic fans, and that can be such an issue when it comes to retaining fandom values.

and yes !! i don't know if i explained it too well but it's less *my* space, and more the act of posting? especially when i see people post about the reboot, check their account, and it says "follow back". i think it's the fancasts that did it. it's the fact people blow up the fandom in random comment sections and celebrities comment sections and draw people to the fandom that's like,,, hi. we don't do this. because when you go into a comment section that's not part of this fandom and talk about the marauders, people won't think "oh they hate jkr and engage ethically" they'll just think "hm there's a part of harry potter i missed!" and start engaging. (not to mention the fact andrew is literally pro-trans and now gets asked about this universe in interviews where he can't just say "fuck jkr", he HAS to act complacent and UGH)

idk it's tough. it's been extra hard for months for me and i've always felt that guilt, but as i watch more people i considered friends support her, or just watch tiktok lean that way, it's no longer guilt for being in that space and more guilt for *providing* for that space.

OH last point because i said no notes but i can't shut up:

tiktok is not a platform for long-form discussion like tumblr it. here i read and reblog so many intense discussions and see so many critical thoughts in reblogs and replies and i think "yeah, we know how to address things", but tiktok is built for short and snappy videos. it's not built for the discussions i've been having over there whether thats jkr or etiquette or discourse or hierarchies, it's not Built for it.

which has been fine because i talk because i enjoy it, but i stopped enjoying it when it felt like i was educating people on a platform that isn't built for that.

ANYWAY !!!! lots of big discussions here and i agree with alllll of this. fandom has been a lot less community-based for a while now and i think i'm going to have fun building a new one or just sitting down with my people <3

we are generally ok with sexualizing adult characters here, we are mostly away from prying cc eyes. yes, even qbbh. you'll see the pregnancy posts. that being said dont come here to try n share our content with ccs, thats bad etiquette.

discourse here is smoother as long as you also agree to be courteous. this means owning up to mistakes or misinfo, arguing politely and sometimes backing off if its clear the other person isnt going to listen.

Hello! I’m Buggy, She/They, disaster, well over 18, Jurassic even. I have a cat (Ezio) and a pitbull (Cassie). 

Um, my primary fandom currently is Doctor Who, but I had been a roleplayer for too long across many fandoms (DC, Marvel, Sherlock, Supernatural, Harry Potter). I don’t roleplay anymore; I have focused on writing fanfiction instead, roleplaying with myself as you do. I do a few different things to keep myself busy; besides writing, I stream occasionally on Twitch. I am not a professional, but I have fun. I mainly yell and die in the game, but sometimes I’m really funny. 

As for writing, I am fairly new to the fanfiction game. I’ve only done it a few months; I started being actually active in April! Rambled in the tags so I figured I'd ramble here since I didn't see an ao3 link and I'm not familiar enough with Patreon or Kofi to know if it has the leave comments/messages feature or what the etiquette for that there is. Our beloved hellsite is great for that.

Love your stories. Very comfy and relaxing, even the more intense storylines. Big "getting tucked into bed" vibes fantasy stories. Or reading in the woods like Frodo at the beginning of FotR.

The spacy ones are somewhat cerebral? All futury and yet so incredibly human. Fuck protocol indees.

And then like.... Action-y romance superhero stories. They don't revolve around secret identities... I'm realizing a lot of the hero/villain stuff I read specifically on tumblr doesn't as often revolve mainly around secret identities? Some to be sure, I wonder if miraculous ladybug fandom has taken over that niche? Thoughts for another time.

As I mentioned in the tags I'm a bit tired and the stories helped relax me. My cat helped some too ^_^

The superhero ones are delightful. I'm a sucker for romance. It feels bizarre compared to other romance stories, in all the best ways. It's all very soft and gradual. Almost the whole "fell first vs fell harder" and it seems many of your main characters are the fell harder. As if they had to come around and remember that they could be loved. Very burnout gifted kid mood with Demi vibes.

I dunno if there's a set rule to powers in your world(s). But I do so enjoy figuring out through the narrative what certain people can do. Getting just a specific peak into their lives. I don't mind or even really notice the first person. (My spouse has a hard time reading first person). But yeah, each one is also a little mystery in trying to piece together power sets and so on.

I am really very happy that you enjoy my stories! Writing brings me so much joy and happiness, that I always hope I can share that with someone who reads them. Haha yeah, I have a lot of "fell first vs fell harder" vibes in many of my stories. I often try to show and build a connection with the characters before love comes into play, which is very much a demi vibe and many characters are indeed almost surprised that they are loved by others. Or rather, by the person that they fell in love with in return.

There isn't really a rule that connects all the stories, it's more that powers have limits or prices or side-effects and it's up to the person who has them to figure out what to do with that. And those who have no magical or supernatural powers to speak off, they get to be clever and smart.

This is really disconcerting as I have rarely seen this in my experience as a Snape fan and have always treated it as an exception thus far, but it's also good news, isn't it? There still are snape haters, perhaps more so than before, but on tumblr, they have adhered to the tagging etiquette, from what I (and my mutuals) have seen. Yes, there are some hate posts here and there, but it's Tumblr's algorithm being a bitch, not the users' fault, and as far as I am concerned, by adhering to tagging etiquette, they want to avoid drama and respect Snape fans' preferences/zone. So it's all good!

In that case, we may start to encounter "nice snape haters" in greater numbers: people who may agree they are not being very fair when it regards him, people who say it's true they rather follow marauder fandom than hp canon, and aren't here to villify Snape or shame Snape fans -- they just don't vibe with him, respecting tagging etiquette to avoid causing drama or triggering people.

"Nice snape haters" is totally weird, and based on how I described them above, the term "hater" doesn't really fit. "Anti" sure doesn't; "hater" has too much of a negative bagage to qualify them. Not Snape-critical either because they aren't always here to talk canon; plus you can be critical AND a fan of Snape. I thus wanted to use another name for them, but I don't know which one.

(I'm not saying we will encounter lots of them, but we may, and it's time we give them a proper name to distinguish them from the snape haters we encountered so far, isn't it?)

What is Monster High Rarepair Month?

This event is dedicated to super rare romantic pairings from all generations of Monster High. The 'spirit' (pun intended) of this event has its roots in crackshipping, any ship that has less than 10 works on AO3 is permitted. (see the fandoms tagged for g1, g2, g3, the g3 movies, and general 'toys' fandom tags to see if your pairing is eligible)

Monster High Rarepair Month will run during the entirety of September, with prompts being delegated on a week-by-week basis.

How do I participate?

Just create something about an ultra-rare pair! Whether it’s fanart, fanfic, edits, headcanons, meta, poetry, analysis, gifs (gifsets if you’re feeling fancy) - anything and everything you can think of is welcome! What pairings count?

As mentioned above, ships should not exceed more than 10 works in the above MH AO3 fandom tags. We’re counting counterparts from each generation as separate characters, so if there’s a ship with >10 ships but they’re marked under the Monster High (Toys) fandom tag, take a closer look and see if the pairing from whatever generation you want to create for is eligible! Some exceptions to our >10 fic limit may apply, see this post for more information.

Polyships/OT3s/OT4s+ are allowed, provided they also follow this rule. Get creative - maybe you'll even create an entirely new relationship tag in the process? :)

Since this is a ship-focused event, your work should be focused on a romantic pairing; even if the characters aren't explicitly dating, they should hold a romantic interest in one another. Incestuous pairings and selfshipping will not be included in this event.

Are crossovers allowed?

Fandom etiquette post covid is ABYSMAL and I'm blaming Tik Tok and Twitter for it.

Like I'll be on Pinterest and it's a fanart of Rise! Mikey and Donnie playing video games and half the comments are like "Look at this BROTHERLY LOVE!!!1! No t-cest here!!!"

And it's so annoying because, like, obviously there's no t-cest in the post, but why do these people have to scream it in the comments every time? Like if you're worried about potential t-cest just... DON'T INTERACT???

Or on Ao3, where they straight up do not read tags, but read the fic, and then get mad at the author for OOC or Dub-Con or Non-Con or violence or whatever, and they're trying to report the author for it??

Or the CONSTANT "this story has mild dub-con but I don't support it as an author, it's part of the story!!" in the A/N of a fic like... since when did fandom have to be soooo sooo kid gloved??

Or the entitlement that comes to what the human form of a non-human character should look like, when there isn't really a cannon human form. AND! IF THERE WAS? People will 👏still 👏have👏headcannons👏 but these new age fandom-police losers will straight up death threat a person for a headcannon because they are so anal about things being cannon they're SUCKING THE FUN OUT OF IT!

And the root of the problem? It's the mentality that's come from Twitter, and Tik Tok where there ALWAYS has to be some sort of moral betterment that some random user is morally good because they avoid difficult topics like SA in their fanfiction, or that they're so GOOD because they think human ninja turtles should be black (even if they end up being racist to Asians in the process, by erasing the fact that whatever fanart has the tmnt as Asian and these dweebs just go "Durr hurr why r they white").

They're straight up not tagging things properly on Ao3 because they're so morally good that they wrote "rape" like "r*pe" to censor it, but now people who actually had that tag blacklisted are seeing that content again all the time because "r*pe" ISN'T HOW TO PROPERLY TAG SOMETHING.

Like 10 years ago, people headcannoned Optimus Prime as black, some headcannoned him as white, some headcannoned him as Asian, and if we didn't agree with any of the headcannons, we fucked off and didn't harass the OP for their headcannon. It was a norm (that I believe was better respected back then) that if you didn't like something, you didnt interact with it, you could click away to another thing! But now? If any person makes a headcannon that's different from what these people think the norm should be regardless of whether or not it's cannon, that person is going to be TORN APART. If your headcannon is different from the "fanon norms", you must be morally wrong and you must be a horrible person.

Because if you think a non-human character's human form is light skinned? You must HATE every DARK SKINNED MINORITY EVERRRR!!!!!1!

That the new age fandom wants to be an individualist experience where the single user needs to make everyone else cater to them, rather than that user cater their own experience to what they know they want.

I'm gonna be honest tho, I'm sure I got the 10 years ago thing wrong, I may have been in fandom a while but I'm not gonna ignore that some folks have been around way longer than I have. So if this has been an issue for a while and I was just blind to it earlier, that's a me issue I guess.

Hazbin Art Scam

Hey everyone. I've gotten a few of these scam DMs from people pretending to be in the Hazbin Hotel fandom, so I just wanted to share some information and make others aware of this scam. I am sure a lot of people would see the red flags through their DMs with these people, but this is also so you can spot when one of these accounts has followed/DMed you so you can just block. It sucks to get your hopes up about meeting a new Hazbin Hotel fan, only to realize you're talking to a scammer.

So, this is how the scam starts. You'll see someone has followed you out of the blue. Typically they don't like any posts and it is unclear how they found you or why they have any interest in your content. It happens sometimes, but it doesn't stop there. If you look at their page, it looks normal at first because they'll have a Hazbin Hotel related profile picture and banner. It tends to be themed around one character in particular, mimicking how a lot of fan blogs look. Usually they'll say they're an artist, but they either only reblog other art posts instead of posting their own (without tags normally) or any art they post is clearly stolen. They're a bit buried but, if you scroll enough and the latter is true, you will find it.

Their bios, in general, look real enough, though if you look closer there's usually a "nonsense phrase" stuck in there that makes you give it a second glance. They also commonly have hashtags in their bio, showing they have no idea how Tumblr works. Here are two examples from the two I had message me:

They will message you almost immediately after following, saying "hey", "hi", or something similar. They'll start some small talk with you enough to make them seem like a genuine Hazbin Hotel fan before getting down to business (mostly asking your opinions on stuff).

The biggest tell is they always seem to ask two things: They will always ask who your favorite Hazbin Hotel character is (even if that information is extremely obvious) and they will ask you if you want to see their commission work or artwork. It's typically under the guise of having OCs they want to share with you, also asking you if you have OCs.

This is their side of the conversation from one that messaged me recently. I went along with it a little more just to see how it would play out:

I linked the commissioned art they showed me back to a Fiverr account (like, it's literally just the example pictures) they had no connection to. Don't be convinced by them getting defensive when you point out it is extremely bizarre to randomly offer someone OC art when you know nothing about them or their content. It is weird, they just want to guilt you into thinking you're being overly cautious so you'll go along with the scam. If you wanna know how outright bizarre this is, my Hazbin Hotel OC is readily available information in my pinned that anyone can access at anytime, even the slightest look at my page would have told them that.

I didn't see the scam the whole way through for obvious reasons, but. For anyone new to Tumblr, like actual users, just so you know this is not normal Tumblr etiquette at all, especially in fandom spaces. Someone messaging you right after following you isn't weird...granted they actually have interacted with you or your posts beforehand and actually talk to you about this rather than asking questions anyone could ask. Most of the questions these scammers ask is based off of basic knowledge you could find through a Google search (like character names, the fact Hazbin Hotel is getting multiple seasons, and so on) without going into any specifics or normal fandom talk like headcanons or gushing. Any time you mention something specific, they will deflect it or ask another question so they won't have to admit they know nothing about the show or its actual contents.

Plus, if an artist really wants to draw your OC, they'll probably send you an ask or a DM directly asking permission, not try to coax you into it through vague small talk or showing off the art you should already be able to see on their page. Or, if you've made it clear you are okay with people making art of your OCs, they'll just do it and tag you. You'll probably have seen them around in your fandom spaces too rather than them just popping up out of nowhere. If someone you've never heard of or seen before follows you and immediately messages you, especially if they're claiming to be an artist with no pinned or very little information about it, it's best to just block.

1000 complaints about Hughie getting SA'd. 100000000 complaints about utter nonsense if not about satire itself and completely missing the mark. 10000000000000000 about the writing from people who seem to lack a fundamental understanding of creative freedom and respecting other artists ability to practice this or even what a HUMAN is by their apparent hatred of the characters not being fucking sock puppets that do everything perfectly exactly as they want or expect them to—because I'm sure the real life people in their day to day life work exactly like this and they have everything and everyone under control, no one ever makes an irrational or emotional decision.

Good job. Pat yourselves on the back. Clearly, you know everything and understand everything with enlightened clarity. Every argument and criticism of canon you make is not bad faith or completely biased because what you say is gospel and cannot be wrong because canon is wrong for not confirming those biases. Nevermind the blatantly displayed ignorance of what legitimate criticism is or lack of basic respect for other artists and points of view with the constant obvious oblivious white Karen gossip and baseless accusations! You care when SA happens to men—oh wait. Only specific men. That's right. Or AT LEAST tag your shit properly! I even think the episodes could have included additional warnings but we've known this kind of stuff is present since day one. But to write half the shit that these people put out in the fandom, fucking refuse to properly tag it—so it will inevitably trigger someone, and then have the audacity to complain about what the show does when they know damn well what the show does barely scratches the surface of some of the garbage these fanfic writers have written?

These are the people that routinely make DEAD DOVE the fucking SAFE SPACE, by comparison. Rape kinks are super fucking common—but they need to be tagged.

These are the people that write shit as badly romanticized and ignorantly trigger happy as Twilight or 50 Shades Of Grey and unironically think it's good.

Egos from fanfic writers more inflated than Homelander's should not be this common, especially when it's people who seem to get off on fucking triggering other people.

And look, I'm sorry for ranting but to put it bluntly, I shouldn't have to rant about this! Tagging is basic fanfiction etiquette, it is literally one of the rules on AO3. Refusing to tag or improperly tagging is a "failure to warn" and can get you suspended if it's a repeated pattern. They even have a catch-all warning in case you aren't sure! It's not difficult and it saves everyone time and pain.

Please be self aware, please tag your work accordingly. If you're someone who gets triggered by a work like this, please politely ask the author to tag it or just report it.

Considering the source materials and what it actually covers and criticizes, this behavior in the fandom is downright disgraceful.

Hello! I wasn't sure who else to ask this so sorry if I'm a bit awkward and shy, but I haven't been back to the hp fandom in a long time and even then I wasn't very active back then, but when it comes to tagging on tumblr do you know what's proper etiquette for ship/character/fandom tagging? For instance do people tag general fandom stuff as hashtag 'harry potter' or would that clash with the character tag so it's rude to do that? Sorry I just don't want to step on any toes while tagging my stuff and did not know who else to ask orz

it's ok! i believe as long as you tag the ship ull be fine (in case anyone wants to mute). ycan use #harry potter since thats the general tag for anything hp, #hp fanart is smth ive seen ppl use as well to see fanarts easier. for harry i just use the #harry james potter tag

i dont think theres any strict rules tbh, my experience so far is people are really chill here. most ive seen is using #anti (ship/character) if you have any of those. and when in doubt just check the top posts of a tag and base urs there

yo hello! You’ve been writing fanfiction for a /long/ time, and I wanted to ask if you had any advice for someone who’s never posted before! Also, is there any different etiquette in posting for a fandom whose source material has ended (I.e. Voltron) than a more active one? I’ve read fanfiction for almost a decade now, but I’ve never posted, and I’m wondering what things look like from the other side. P.S. your snake is really cute!!! :D

Hey anon! Welcome to the writing world!

Honestly my biggest piece of advice for someone who's interested in posting writing is to just go for it. Just post it! Somebody out there is sure to like the idea that you had.

That said, my second piece of advice is: don't post for attention's sake. By this I mean, don't post fanfiction purely because you want reviews/comments/kudos/faves/to be the next Big Name Fan. Fanfiction "fame" is ephemeral and fleeting and a lot of it is purely based on luck of the draw and the state of the fandom at the time. My name is very well known in certain fandoms and virtually unheard of in others. In some fandoms I get lots of comments and attention and in others there's silence. It doesn't bother me too much because I write what I want to see first, and then share it afterwards in case it's something others would like to see too. But if you're in it purely for attention, you will probably be disappointed and then discourage yourself out of writing.

If you're not 100% comfortable putting your name out there yet, you can always post anonymously on AO3. This can let you experiment with posting fic and getting used to the idea of putting your stuff out there, without the anxiety of having your name attached to it. Heck, sometimes I post stuff anonymously just to not have my name attached and see if my writing style can stand on its own without my "brand" pulling anything.

As for etiquette for posting, I don't think there's anything really different for posting in an older/less active fandom vs a newer/more active one. Fandoms with source material that's completed do tend to have less activity in them these days, though, so you may be less likely to meet like-minded fans to chat with. If that doesn't bother you, it shouldn't be an issue.

General posting etiquette to keep in mind:

Tag appropriately, especially for anything readers might need warnings about (like common triggers)

Never tag for "reach" (i.e. you're writing a ship of characters A/B, but tag for A/C just so people searching the A/C tag will also stumble across your fic. If your fic only includes characters X and Y, don't tag it with character Z just so people browsing that tag see it. Etc)

Know the difference between / and &. The / symbol is used for ships (ex. shipping A/B). The & symbol is for character interactions that are not ships (ex. A&B would imply a platonic or friendship focus between A and B, not a romantic or sexual one).
