Reaction to The Devil Judge (spoilers for ep. 11-12)
Hello everyone! I hope youâre doing well this week!
Here we go! Again iâm really sorry for the english & my personal interpretations which might go a little bit overboard (âÂŽÏ`â)
THIS GOT VERYYYYYYYYYY LONG PLEASE BEAR WITH ME!!!!
tldr: i am in shambles haha
Have a nice week and take care! â„
- Huckleberryfinnâs new OST, The Nights, was released this saturday and itâs truly a gem! The guitar/bassâs place in BOTH OSTs they composed is awesome. The lyrics destroyed me haha (iâll shortly talk about it below!). The soundtrack during these two episodes was awesome btw ;;
- Sun-Ahâs visit to the mansion felt nostalgic and shattering at the same time, she sees she doesnât belong in this house but still indulges a little in this illusion, « wanting to fall for his trick even just for a little while ». Her expression made me feel for her for a little while too ;;Â
This shot above is funny because the bokeh effect (âš the little sparkles âš) is used in the background every time but this time it plays in front of Sun-Ahâs view: she sees in Yohan and his mansion a « shining » thing she desired for a long time. The bokeh here served also as a transition to the flashback right after.
Well, it could just be the streetlightsâ reflections on the car and me reaching but there are so many symbolic visual shots in this show already i just couldnât dismiss it in my brain haha
I liked Sun-Ahâs depiction of her choice to go against Yohan: she drops the necklace (symbolizing Yohan, this scene followed by Yohanâs cross-like scar) and not herself, like she did in the past for/because of Yohan when she was a maid + Yohanâs reflection disappears, Sun-Ah only focusing on herself: the âusâ she wanted for some time disappeared. And this event makes Sun-Ahâs rage on K more upsetting than it already is, but maybe iâm reaching haha
This scene also shows Yohan and Sun-Ah want two different directions to their relationship: to use her and to have him reach the top by her side respectively. They both look at the mirror, but their focus is different and theyâre set in different plans on the shots.
In My Mister, (SPOILERS) the wife has a serious affair with her husbandâs superior, but throughout the drama, they have divergent opinions on their affairâs developments: the wife wanted to leave her husband and settle with her lover, while the latter didnât think any of it and, among other plot reasons, only wanted her because married women are the âsafest choice (ending the relationship while she still loves him would be more troublesome) and always kept the affair secretâ.Â
This was particularly symbolized by their song preferences, but also by this shot in the beginning of the series: after the wife shared her hopes about their relationship (and her lover staying most of the time silent), they both look to the distance (their affairâs metaphorical future) but their eyes almost never look in the same direction.
- « I did it because i need you (by my side?) », Sun-Ah and Gaonâs parallels:
"[To Gaon on ep. 8] I wanted you to be by my side.â
â[To Gaon on ep. 5] I donât need you to understand, but you need to make a decision. Will you stand in my way ⊠or stand on my side?â
"[To Gaon] If i needed to, i wouldâve done something even worse. Whether it was switching him or something else.â
- When Elijah and Gaon play jenga, Yohan might have let the door to his bedroom open (even after leaving them the first time) to continue hearing them have fun in the living room. It parallels to the scene in ep. 5 where he watches them play in the garden with Kkomi through the little gap of his curtains: what piques his curiosity first is the playful conversation he hears from his bed even from the closed windows. The flashback explains it all and iâm glad Gaon insisted to have him play with them despite the front he tried to put on, Elijahâs and Yohanâs expressions in this scene ended me ;;
Look how quick he turned his attention to Gaon, as if he waited for something to happen, to get to play with them!! His eyes lit up in an instant i canât with this â
I loved how Yohan delayed his defeat to Elijah by asking Gaon questions about the game hahah
Elijah and Yohanâs relationship growth here reminds me of 2 parallels i didnât catch the first time (but the desperation i felt when Gaon left because everything could grow cold again between Elijah and Yohan):
âThatâs everything i think aboutâ:
Elijah getting in & out of the car (ep. 6-9):
- And Gaonâs « Once everything is over, iâll definitely ⊠» â youâll definitely what, please tell the audienceeeeeeee ;;;; this screams a death flag for Soohyun (or was it just foreshadowing their confrontation in ep. 12? idek anymore haha), but letâs hope itâs not!!
- After CKHâs suicide: we canât expect people to make perfect choices every time they are challenged, and i think this story shows it well: Soohyun when she was with Elijah, and now Gaon carelessly touching the ministerâs body for the files. As judges, they could have searched the body and the room using a fabric to hide their presence. But theyâre both shocked: Yohan looks dumbfounded, standing and watching (even though heâs quicker to react when he sees Soohyun and he puts on a composure at the house saying it was ânothingâ, he looked very sour when Sun-Ah called him to rejoice in her death) and Gaon panic-stricken. The fact he might have relived his parentsâ suicide when he discovered the Ministerâs body ⊠And in the worst way possible (in a daze, searching her dead body for her files and realizing he didnât give the body minimum respect) ⊠oof
At least Yohan could have thought about it since the story shows how prepared he is in his plans, but this scene shows even him is at a loss at what to do. After all, the minister was the way he targeted to bring everyone linked to the foundation down. They were so close, i think he was too convinced her « self-pity » would mean her survival despite everything (« Do you have any other options? ») to see what was coming. After all, when they last met, he saw she was about to shoot him.Â
Sun-Ah was the only one he thought was âunpredictableâ. When Gaon talked to CKH, he let him speak and approved his speech, surely thinking everything went along his plans and the minister would surrender. And i think thatâs also why he gives Gaon all this speech, to reassure himself and them, since they work now as a team.Â
- Ep. 9 foreshadowing ep. 11 and 12 (Soohyun facing Yohan and Gaon). Itâs interesting how the two shots from ep. 9 seem to put on the same plan the three characters, as if Yohan is literally standing between Soohyun and Gaon, as if he was the one protecting/separating him from Soohyun. This is very telling of the whole dynamic between those three.
- When the minister said she didnât want to clear her name regarding her son in the live but still does so anyway, this is pure preterition haha! Itâs also why she reminds the public opinion the first case Yohan handled!
- Cha Kyung Heeâs demise (ep. 11-4 parallels):
(+ a cinematographic reference to the 2000 movie MalĂšna, which was recently used in Hwasaâs MV for the song Maria)
- The scene right after where Soohyun wipes Gaonâs involvement to the suicide was moving in regards to her character, we get to see how torn she is by this situation + when she faces off Yohan in the parking (and the âlet goâ could also have referred to Gaon) ⊠i felt bad for her!
- About Soohyun & the professor: I find interesting the way the professor and Soohyun shelter Gaonâs existence was clearly shown with these two episodes and through their rage. At the beginning of the drama, their hold on his lifeâs values and choices was almost impalpable but not anymore, now that theyâre facing Yohanâs threat.
In these shots, Soohyun looks like she is covering Gaonâs ear, turning him away and protecting him from outside (from the pain, Yohan, the rest of the world).
And on professor Minâs part, itâs almost infantilizing, de-responsibilizing Gaon to say the least (« What are you making Gaon do? That child has been through so much. He suffered and struggled through the worst to get there. »), given heâs the one who planted him on the courtâs bench to find whatâs happening behind the scene: he could have asked Gaon for explanations (as Yohan underlined, « Did you hear it from Gaon himself? ») but he just snaps at him. He should have foreseen that he couldâve taken Yohanâs side.Â
For his defense, his family just got targeted but still, itâs the first time Gaon came back since then!
(By the way, that whole conversation with professor Min confirmed to Yohan Gaon didnât admit to their plan to Soohyun nor the professor)
As for Soohyun, her deep concern for Gaon makes her antagonize Yohan and, in her POV, itâs pretty understandable: her friend got locked up in this judgeâs house for days with no phone or permission to go out + said judge seems to not let her niece go out with her new friends, got violent against Gaon + he seems to be plotting something behind the trials he biased + Gaonâs description of the man in the first episodes wasnât that nice but DESPITE IT ALL her friend still seems to be empathizing with him?Â
Sheâs maybe thinking he got manipulated by Yohan given the evil picture he depicted her & must feel helpless in front of Gaonâs sudden change of heart. I think thatâs what she wanted to ask him when she got cut by the professorâs arrival. The lack of honest conversation between them is whatâs making it worse: on one hand, Gaon goes to her every time he feels sad or confused to get comfort & advice without telling what truly is going on (or eventually telling her when she insists), on the other hand, Soohyun always tells him to give up his investigation on Yohan and never asks him his point of view to understand the situation.Â
And she discovered he lied about him not being involved with this man in the worst way possible, finding him by CKHâs body with Yohan. He was her reason to dedicate her life to protect people under the law (he does not owe her anything in no way, but it was her wish), and she ended up dirtying her hands for him. Her gut reaction to her moral principles being violated by both Gaon and her right now is stronger than wanting to hear the truth from Gaon. She continues to investigate Yohan on her own, to protect him. It was interesting to see this sententious side when she confronted Gaon after all this! The only time Soohyun saw him cry and didnât support him, it hits hard ;;
But i believe the whole crisis thatâs happening by the end of ep. 12 will make them team up again at least for a while. And on that note, will she meet Sun-Ah? It would be interesting!
Iâm glad the professor raised as a concern on the live trials the due process & fair trial, which are essential for the rule of law to prosper. Â
In fact, the live trials slowly become a place of majoritarianism/ochlocracy/mob rule as the cases progress (the two best examples being the actor and Juk Chang cases), the protests against professor Min are another example. Even if Yohan has the last word on the defendantâs sentence, this issue is still there.Â
Maybe the viewersâ voice will turn against Yohan one day?
- The minister ⊠Even though the story showed us how cruel her family could be, i canât help but feel sympathy for her son with her suicide. And that is accentuated by the fact her familyâs grief is not even showed, covered by the mediatic chaos. She could have fled the country as her son suggested, but she thought she was « nothing » without her accomplishments and her path to glory. As the former president of the foundation killed by Sun-Ahâs hands, she died in her office as the Minister of Justice, while her image wasnât torn to shreds yet. The photograph she held showed her at the center and, ironically, itâs the only figure from the photo who is clear-cut, her husband and her son are out of focus (or it could just be the episodeâs image quality misleading me haha). Even though she loved them (well, at least in her manner, which was kind of narcissistic tbh), she cared too much for her success and her death was her act of self-pity. Â
- This isnât the first time Gaon was warned about Yohan and i find it interesting itâs the people closest to him that say that, especially K despite (or precisely because?) his loyalty to him. Elijah also warned him before.
- The whole argument ⊠Itâs a progression of ep. 5 & 8 scenes (âwill you stand in my way or stand on my side?â & âi wanted you by my side and if i needed to, i wouldâve done something worseâ). You can tell how desperate Yohan was when he reached out to Gaon. His gaze faltered, showing his hesitation to do it, but as the realization he was going to lose him dawned on him, this touch became a necessity in front of the exigency, making up for everything he couldnât say out loud. It was a sad & hurtful mess. Yohan truly looked short on âargumentsâ after Gaonâs question (âwhat kind of monster am i turning into?â), he seemed to not even know what to say to make him stay, making him pause before talking about Soohyun.Â
The way his eyes lit up, almost smiling, full of hope, when he finished laying his ultimatum and how he regained a composed expression, thinking Gaon would take his side maybe?
I didnât catch it on the first time, but Gaonâs sadness to end/put a hold on their collaboration (thus their whole relationship, stepping out of his life) transpired through him weakly rejecting Yohanâs hand with his own hand sliding down the latter's arm, as if he was unwilling to let this life with the Kangs go. You can see itâs hard on him to leave with the tears in his eyes.Â
I think Gaonâs response outran his thoughts, as a quick riposte, it was to make Yohan stop this. The way things went (well, it escalated QUICKLY), hurting him like that was the only effective way, and he knows it will hurt him: before saying Soohyun is his world, he tears up because of that (in addition to everything Yohan said and it was A LOT), and didnât even have the strength/will to get angry like all the previous times:Â
the fact Yohan laid this very ultimatum and wanted to persuade/manipulate him into thinking this was the only choice. Even if he knew Yohan would be capable of doing this since ep. 7-8 (âTo achieve his goal, would he not use another manâs pain? If the devil really did exist among us.â), he got a confirmation and it still hurts.
+ the fact he knows he has to hurt him with something as much as hurtful before he takes it too far.
+ the fact he knows he canât live in this house any longer because of this argument when he made all these memories with them.
And (letâs hope for it) if Gaon wants to show Yohan thereâs another way out of this ultimatum, Gaonâs « Soohyun is my world » might be a counter ultimatum (âto stay by your side, youâll have to deal with my world because there must be another way, there is no question, or else youâll have to deal on your ownâ). Heâs still not said anything to Soohyun (well, he didnât have the opportunity to anyway but even during their confrontation, when she asked for details, he said nothing) nor the professor, so maybe thatâs it?
- « Of course it doesnât matter to me, but âŠÂ » ELIJAH NOOOOOOOO ;;;;;;;;; After Yohan, Elijah tries in her way to hold Gaon back â and she makes a valid point tbh (look at what happened by the end of the episode!), but seeing her putting all her efforts and realizing itâs failing is heartbreaking ⊠Given the preview for ep. 13, please let me hope this conversation wonât be their last one!!Â
- Utter devastation when the next scenes show how Gaon still shines even in his absence: the « You never apologize » + the scene with the nanny & Gaonâs last prepared meal + Gaonâs portrait by Elijah ⊠ughÂ
- Elijahâs painting game is too strong, canât relate haha! I wish they could show the BTS for this painting, respect for the artist behind!!
- On metaphorical images, Gaon took care of the Kangs like he tended to his plants at home. On a regular basis, he provided them attention and care, making them lively as his plants got lush. On ep. 8, we got a shot of Elijah smiling at Gaonâs plants, sort of a confirmation she loved how their house became warmer since Gaonâs stay, which led her to open up to his uncle.
- Now theyâre only four! It looks like the mafia game haha, i look forward (am i though?) to the day Sun-Ah sits by herself hahaÂ
AND THIS MAN
This is true pig behavior, especially considering Sun-Ahâs past ⊠I felt her reaction when he said all this bs to demean her, she had all her struggles with men thrown back to her face, soiled by these « jokes ».Â
- The monsters, the abyss and Nietzsche:
« He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee. », Nietzsche
- « I donât care if humanity falls, as long as i have you two ». It was what he wouldnât say to Gaon nor Elijah, and yet theyâre his world! This sequence parallels Gaonâs inner wish when he leaves the Kangâs house + the flashbacks of his fond memories with the Kangs. Will Yohan give his vigilante ideals up for them? Will Gaon pursue this dream but in his own way that wonât threaten their « worlds »?
(Now we know what his whole world meant)
- The light from the chandelier (ie. their newfound family) is out of Yohanâs (metaphorical) reach, shown by its blurred silhouette, as if itâs gone from the room which regained its initial colder tones. But itâs not: once itâs made its way in the room, it remains and lingers, as a keepsake of the lost warmth. His fond memories with Gaon and Elijah flashed back through the windowâs light.
On a similar note, Gaonâs room, albeit having warmer tones than the Kangâs ones since the beginning, looks dark too. The contrast with earlier episodes is clear. This reminds me of My Misterâs (SPOILERS) full shots of Lee Ji Anâs room, getting warmer as she gets to know Park Dong Hoon, and losing all its fond colors when she has to leave for his sake. As if the room and inanimate objects were given life by their owner, imbuing them with their feelings. It becomes an outer expression of their feelings. Sorry for the rambling but i just love when they do that in fiction, and i think it sometimes leaves more impact to the viewers if emotions are conveyed through various angles (eg. through another characterâs point of view, sounds, looks, the use of light i mentioned below, etc) !Â
- I wonder ⊠since the flashbacks are giving us Gaonâs conscious point of view on this separation, was he awake when Yohan came back from his (forced) encounter with Sun-Ah? Itâs a really minor point but it could be an interesting detail since this show always shows us there are some sides or spots to the stories we didnât have yet!Â
The jenga scene also flashed back but this time we see Gaonâs POV seeing Yohanâs smile & we got Gaonâs angle when Yohan had a nightmare in ep. 5: while from Yohanâs POV, Gaonâs irruption truly felt like an invasion of his intimacy (the quick succession of shots expressing his panic and defensive reaction), from Gaonâs POV only one angle showed the scene, the tension was conveyed only when Yohan slapped his hand away.Â
We also got Yohanâs POV when he admitted to Gaon he needed him by his side (and a closer look at Gaonâs troubled expression)! Â
- Ep. 5 and 11-12 parallels:Â
Yohanâs tentative look at Gaon and Elijah playing outside, as if he wanted to join them like in ep. 11, the curtains mainly closed and only pushed by one of his hands. It let the daylight in his dark room through this sneak peek.Â
But in ep. 12, the curtains are drawn, Yohan taking the (moon)light fully in. And this time, he doesnât reach out to his late brother in the flames, but to the moonlight. He gets up, as in a trance, from his nightmare like the last time, but he goes to his window instead. And it reminds me of both Huckleberry Finnâs OSTâs (in Tempest, « you said iâll live in the sun / moonlight » and in The Nights, « my / your night shines on you / me »), the suffer is here. And see how the light reveals his tear? I nearly missed it!
The fact he could not find sleep anymore after this night + he slept on his sofa where the moonlight could be seen + has kept his phone right next to him (in case Gaon called him or to know if something happened to him) ⟠đ pure devastation đ
- I really love the showâs use of light/dark tones to reveal and contrast its charactersâ emotions! What you canât see in the light gets revealed in the dark, and vice-versa. The OST The Nights touches on this subject as well.Â
And it ties up very well to the plot so far: everyone has his or her own motivations and intentions, background, and makes choices, but depending on the perspective, their story changes and sparks off different reactions. Everybodyâs story is interconnected.Â
As @skylessnights pointed out, one of the books found during the series (when Yohan revealed his past to Gaon if iâm correct), The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, depicts this angle well in its plot and epigraph: « Never again shall a single story be told as though it were the only one. » - John Berger.Â
When Gaon and Yohan go back to the mansion after CKHâs death, the route lights flash Gaonâs hands red, caught (literally) red-handed by Soohyun. He begins to recollect his recent memories of what just happened, and panics, short-winded, until Yohan touched his arm. Heâs startled but calmed himself down, and we donât hear him out of breath anymore. Itâs interesting how the lightâs focus was on Gaonâs hands, the core of his panic, until Yohanâs arm came into the light, as if our and Gaonâs attention went back to Yohanâs touch, his anchor in his panic, and begins to think clear-headed of what they had done. (btw, getting Phoenix Wright desperate vibes from Gaonâs pose haha)
Gaonâs emotions show when his phone lights up, trying to reach Soohyun again.Â
When Yohanâs inner wish brings him back to their happy times, the end of the flashback shows a shot of his eyes dazzled by the light of these memories and back to the present, the light now gone out from his eyes.
Yohanâs reaction to Gaonâs cry in the prison yard in ep. 7: what i loved to see was how his restraint told more about the emotions he held back. The light shifting on his face revealed his jaw clenching & frowned brows, his glassy eyes and him averting his gaze, which he often does when heâs in front of sensitive topics and itâs too much.
+ other instances he looked away:
When Jinjoo decides to accept the foundationâs offer, she steps into the dark side of the room where the two chairmen are. Up till now, she stood where the light could reach her, away from them. It symbolically seals her involvement with the foundation, and by the end of ep. 12, it is confirmed by her message on behalf of the foundation (about the plague) displayed on the screens. By the way, i love the fact so much things unfold while we focus on Yohan and Gaonâs story!
On the subject of âsubjectiveâ truths, examples, besides the flashback with the priest about Yohan in ep. 11, could be the truth behind the cancellation of the donation by Yohan or Sun-Ahâs fall from the window when she was a maid. We got Sun-Ah, Elijah, and then later Yohanâs point of view.
- I think Gaon tried to call Soohyun and not Yohan (though the subs say otherwise) because the contact above has the âthugâ nickname with the fist emoji! It made more sense, Yohan wouldâve answered right away! But i believe he will have regrets/worries in the next episodes (Yohan and Elijah seem to be getting in real danger so maybe heâll come back to save them).
- Metatextuality in The Devil Judge â Beauty and the Beast (written by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont & Disneyâs 1991 animation movie)
Iâve always loved transtextual relationships between fictions, my french teacher in middle school gave us this passion haha! Ever since i read this interview translated by @deviljudgeâ, itâs true iâm getting more and more Beauty and the Beast vibes, especially from ep. 12âs argument (and the whole premise Belle got locked up in the mansion in the beginning)! The original fairy tale and Disneyâs adaptation are both relevant, some plot points differ from one another (Belleâs sisters vs Gaston, the mansion personnel turned into living paraphernalia) even though the core of the fairy tale is left untouched but for the sake of this bit, iâll use the 1991 movie because its inevitably longer format delves more into the fairy tale moral lesson.
(Cheesy time incoming haha) The beast lets Belle go see her father he knew she deeply cared about, and let her go because he realized he loved her. He thought she would never come back, but despite it all, she came back and saved him from Gaston. Belle (Gaon) broke the spell that was casted on the mansion (the Kangs and their loneliness, especially when Yohan said heâs tired of this house). Yohan fails at not hurting the people he cares about but learns step by step, by Gaon and Elijah's side, how to live again and reconnect with his âhumanâ side.
Even the secretary looks like the modern version of the whole cast in the Beastâs mansion (Cogsworth, LumiĂšre, âŠ) haha
The movie intro is self-explanatory:Â
« Although he had everything his heart desired, the prince was spoiled, selfish and unkind. But then, one winterâs night, an old beggar woman came to the castle and offered him a single rose in return for shelter from the bitter cold. Repulsed by her haggard appearance, the prince sneered at the gift and turned the old woman away. But she warned him not to be deceived by appearances, for beauty is found within. And when he dismissed her again, the old womanâs ugliness melted away to reveal a beautiful enchantress. The prince tried to apologize, but it was too late, for she had seen that there was no love in his heart. And as punishment, she transformed him into a hideous beast and placed a powerful spell on the castle and all who lived there. Ashamed of his monstrous form, the Beast concealed himself inside his castle with a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world. The rose she had offered was truly an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his 21st year. If he could learn to love another, and earn her love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time. As the years passed, he fell into despair and lost all hope, for who could ever learn to love a beast? »
Belleâs characterization in the movie is also interesting:
« With a dreamy, far-off look and her nose stuck in her book what a puzzle to the rest of us is Belle ».Â
« There must be more than this provincial life (âŠ) I want adventure in the great wide somewhere â I want it more than i can tell â And for once it might be grand to have someone understand â I want so much more than theyâve got planned »Â
& when Belle got locked up in the mansion: « Iâve lost my father, my dreams, everything. » (similar to âSoohyun is my worldâ).
Gaon, since his parentsâ death, lived his life believing in the illusion of justice the system gave him, along with Soohyun and professor Min, his two pillars who kept him steady this whole time. Once he was showed it was an illusion, he wanted to fight this world.
Before the movieâs climax, this conversation reminded me of ep. 12âs argument:
« - Belle? Are you happy here with me?
- Yes. [looks to the distance]
- What is it?
- If only i could see my father again just for a moment. I miss him so much.
- There is a way. This mirror will show you anything. Anything you wish to see.
- Iâd like to see my father, please. [The mirror projects the image of his father in danger and sick] Papa. Oh no. Heâs sick. He may be dying and heâs all alone.
- [Glances at the wilting rose] Then you must go to him.Â
- What did you say?
- I release you. Youâre no longer my prisoner.
- You mean iâm free?
- Yes.
- Oh, thank you. Hold on Papa, iâm on my way.
- Take [the mirror] with you, so youâll always have a way to look back and remember me.
- Thank you for understanding how much he needs me.
(âŠ)
- I let her go.Â
- [Cogsworth] Yes, splen ⊠You what? How could you do that?
- I had to.
- Yes but ⊠Why?
- Because i love her. »
Yohan did nothing to hold Gaon back even if he needs him (as shown when he clutches his hands together after he left) because he was forced by Gaon to understand how precious Soohyun is to him, this point was already made multiple times in the series (when Gaon thought he was the one who pushed Soohyun in the stairs and already threatened him about it, when Gaon told him he couldnât live as a conman in front of Soohyun and his parents). Since his âto have you by my side, i would have done worse if it was necessaryâ + âthis is a life or death situation, sacrifices are also necessaryâ, he seemed to think Soohyun was expendable in his own world, which he shared with Gaon. With this argument, his world looks definitely incompatible with the one Gaon described (« Soohyun is my world »), and even though they already went this far in their plan, he lets him go and respects his choice. Will it make him change for the better or for the worse? Will the whole âabsence makes the heart grow fonderâ apply to him?
Other moments i found interesting to note:
« Come into the light »:
When Belle goes to save the Beast from the village:
« - Please, i know he looks vicious, but heâs really kind and gentle. Heâs my friend. - - [Gaston] If i didnât know better, Iâd think you had feelings for this monster. - - Heâs no monster, Gaston. You are! - - If youâre not with us, youâre against us. » (pretty similar to the professorâs rage in the hospital)
When Belleâs father goes to save her: « I donât care what it takes. Iâll find that castle and somehow, i ⊠Iâll get her out of there. » (when Soohyun talks about and to Yohan)
The Beast possessive behavior in the beginning of the story: « [To her father] Sheâs no longer your concern, take him to the village. » (similar to Yohanâs behavior towards Soohyun) & « [To Belle] The castle is your home now » (and towards Gaon)
A monster:
When the Beast observes Belle playing from afar:
- And i saw some Jane Eyre vibes (SPOILERS) from the whole fire haha + Wuthering Heights on Sun-Ahâs & Yohanâs mixed parts!
- And well ⊠Sun-Ahâs character loosely reminds me of Simone in Nier Automata (which in itself is a reference to Simone de Beauvoirâs life and works), with the whole « I must become more beautiful / But he still wonât look my way », to whoever knows this game!Â
- These thigh boots holy hell Sun-Ah!!!! i loved this outfit!
- As soon as he said he didnât feel anything from his revenge, K got the biggest death flag in this episode, i canât believe they did this to the poor boy ⊠When i asked for more scenes THIS isnât what i meant aaaaaaaaaa
- A very random and weird note: Yohanâs almost silent and held back pain by the end of the ep. 12 fits his character so far, as well as his âcalmâ tears. Given his past, itâs as if heâs always kept his pain bottled up and quietly bears it all and almost never got the space to properly let it all out (he had his brother, but with their father, i think they didnât have this âchanceâ).
- My sick mind thought Sun-Ah was going to bring Gaon to the scene just in time for him to witness Yohan getting shot, but i guess it will be when she will get in the Kangâs mansion again according to the preview (since she asked Juk Chang for a « favor », i think theyâll knock Gaon out after beating him up for his own fun to leave him to Sun-Ah). Sun-Ah looked surprised when Jae-Hee shot him, so i guess only hurting K was part of the plan.
- The âI know iâm fuckedâ look hahaha
+ the softer version:
- I now have BIG trust issues since these last episodesâ previews, and the cliffhangers kill me hahaÂ
- On another note, i find it amazing how Ji Sung and Kim Min Jung keep that upsetting atmosphere whenever thereâs a scene between them that involves them and skinship, but it still conveys Sun-Ahâs complex feelings for Yohan and Yohanâs interest in her! The soundtrack really does a good job to convey that mood as well!
- In conclusion: How Dramatic do you want these two episodes to be? The devil judge: Yes

5 Favorite First Viewings of July 2021
Quick note: Hi everyone, I'm back, things have honestly been getting better for me, and I'm glad to be on this site full of cinephiles, people that are too horny, and cinephiles that are too horny. I'll be more active on here. But anyway, let's talk about some movies.
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) (dir. Russ Meyer)
CW: Abortion mention
What a picture. What a gorgeous, sexy, horrifying slice of what Hollywood and star life can do to a bunch of bright-eyed young people looking for success. Also is a critique of how macho nature can ruin friendships and romantic relationships with total ease. I was obsessed with the scene transitions, like Pet pouring pancake mix onto a plate after the abortion scene, or Kelly singing after someone screams before their murder in the opening scene.
Great, campy flick with exceptional music too.
Deep Cover (1992) (dir. Bill Duke)
Laurence Fishburne plays Russell Stevens, a Cincinnati police officer who hopes to do well by the community, to make a difference. Heâs traumatized by the death of his substance-abusing father, and wants to make sure that he can help the people of his own town. He goes undercover on assignment as a drug dealer, where his boss orders him to take down the kingpin. Stevens realizes the policeâs own failings while on assignment. The racist abuse he takes from Agent Carver, and the realization that the police department is protecting drug kingpins like Gallegos and Barbossa. Giving drugs to Black kids and Latinx kids so there will be less of them. The cops are no different than the drug kingpins looking to make filthy amounts of money.
Fishburneâs performance is excellent, as Stevens feels he has to maintain a stone face so he doesnât get caught by Jason or Barbossa or any of his cronies, but also he maintains a stone face to try and hide his emotion, his trauma. But when he gets pissed, Fishburne acts it beautifully, as is when he has to deliver a funny quip to counter Jasonâs douchebaggery. And the production design, holy fuck, the sets and the lighting.
A perfect neo-noir for the HW Bush years, arguably one of the most timeless commentaries on the era, as well as the police as a whole.
Fast Five (2011) (dir. Justin Lin)
I was torn between including this or Furious 7, but I ultimately went with Fast Five because it felt like an important turning point in the series, it's a great heist film, and it reached the same chaotic highs and genuinely excellent filmmaking that I had been waiting for since 2 Fast and Tokyo Drift.
Fast Five opens where Fast & 4ious left off. Dom is hauled away to prison on a bus. Mia and Brian drive in their high-tech cars and knock the bus over, helping Dom escape. The title drops. Fast Five. Itâs such an intense yet short action scene, and dropping the title immediately after it lets the viewer know that this movie is not fucking around. Itâs arguably gonna be more intense and insane than the previous one.
And it is. The filmmakers made the decision to use a lot more practical stunt work for the film, and as a result, it leads to, so far, the best action in the entire series, since 2 Fast and Tokyo Drift. Itâs not just how itâs shot or edited, itâs the geography of the locations, the rooftop chase echoes the rooftop chase of Jackie Chanâs masterwork Police Story, particularly the way each character bounces from top to top.
And of course, thereâs the silliest moment in the movie, the one that matches the intensity and kineticism of a film like 2 Fast, which is driving the Reyesâ bank vault throughout the street, getting chased by corrupt cops.
I know we make fun of Vin Diesel for saying âfamilyâ all the time in these films, but thereâs a reason we remember him saying all of these impassioned monologues. Because heâs unbelievably sincere, and has so much love in his heart for every single person in the room. Anytime he delivers a speech to any of them, itâs genuinely heartwarming.
This is the film that finally shows La Familia in their best environment, which is working together, in a movie genre that allows them to work together, which is a heist film. And a great one at that.
Last Days (2005) (dir. Gus Van Sant)
CW: Mention of suicide
Several films have been made about legendary rock artist Kurt Cobain, and for good reason. He is one of the most tragic figures in rock and roll. A tortured genius who has written and performed classic song after classic song with his band Nirvana. He was called the voice of a generation, and helped change the face of mainstream alternative rock music as we know it. But with that fame, and all of those expectations came a worsening depression and further drug abuse, and his eventual death. But most of the films about Kurt Cobain ask one question which gets under my skin way too much:
âWho REEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLY killed Kurt Cobain?â
It was him. He did. And itâs okay, Iâm sad too. Thinking that Kurt Cobain was murdered is completely ignoring the depression that he faced. And despite Last Days being more inspired by the death of Cobain rather than actually about it, it feels much more honest than the conspiracy documentaries on his death, wanting to leech off of his dead body.
This is the last installment of Gus Van Santâs âDeath Trilogyâ, the previous two installments being Gerry (2001), and Elephant (2003). While I have not seen Gerry, I have seen Elephant though, and love that film for its minimalist, raw nature, and its boldness for not romanticizing the school shooter or the lives they had taken. Last Days falls into that trap once, as I donât agree with the shot of Blakeâs soul climbing up a ladder, that always struck me as cheesy in a film that is anything but.
Last Days is similar to Elephant in terms of the way it is filmed. Its usage of long takes, and still shots of characters doing various things, such as Blake playing his guitar behind a drum set. The way these moments are shot is similar to a Chantal Akerman film, particularly Jeanne Dielman. Where the acts of the mundane are the stars of the film. Blake wanders around an empty house, and the viewer can feel the pain, not just through Michael Pittâs acting, but from the house itself. Its decay, its paint peeling from the walls, from the soft glow of the lamp that lights his face.
I say this is the most honest film about Kurt Cobain, because, despite the characters technically being fictional (the main character who looks, walks, and acts like Cobain is named Blake), this film focuses on the mental state of a person before they eventually take their own life. Theyâre still working, still making music, still trying to talk to friends and bandmates, but the depression lingers on. Not once does this film try to make you believe that someone else killed him, because you can see the signs of his own suicide taking place just through the filmâs excellent cinematography by Harris Savides, showing his mental state only growing worse through the production design.
And itâs empathetic with him. Thereâs no judgement for leaving rehab, thereâs no finger-wagging at him or the people he was with, thereâs just a silent prayer at the end of the film, hoping that he is in a better place than he was.
Sometimes you donât need to show every event that led you to where you are, all you can show is the moment, which also makes this better than most biopics as well, as it never feels messy or muddled, just showing one moment of Blake/Kurtâs life.
I really loved this film, and Iâll be writing about it in full soon.
The Village (2004) (dir. M. Night Shyamalan)
The Cracked.com/Channel Awesome audience stuck in 2012 will tell you that this was the beginning of the end for Shyamalan. That this was when people stopped taking him seriously, that this was when he became more of a punchline because of his twist endings.
But why?
The Village was released in 2004, deep in the Bush administration, during the early stages of the Iraq War. The leaders of the time were talking about imaginary boogeymen, terrorists that would attack the civilians if they could. Because of 9/11, politicians could get away with these false ideas with the majority of Americans fully believing them. The boogeymen in The Village are âThe People We Donât Speak Ofâ, monsters attracted by the color red. Yet we find out that they are all costumes made by the Elders of the land, designed to prevent people from going outside the land. They rule by fear disguised as love. Theyâve gone through their own traumas through the deaths of their family members, but theyâve decided to completely abandon the lives that theyâve had and have their children living lies.
9/11 impacted American life by teaching citizens to live primarily by fear, to not trust anyone but their own people. And yet, post-9/11, all that increased was not âcoming togetherâ, but hate crimes against South Asian people. The rage white Americans had felt led to conservative politicians pushing fear-mongering agendas, and said white Americans blindly accepted. The outside world was progressing, but too many people were fine with living with further conservative politics only regressing American life further and further back, all for the illusion of safety. Meanwhile, the only threats to them were not the brown citizens outside of America they were so afraid of, but the white elders, the white politicians.
The Village explores these fears so eloquently, all while having a terrifying atmosphere, an enchanting score, and brilliant sound design. I enjoyed this movie very much.

Mortal Kombat (2021) Review
Well, well, well....here we are, a Mortal Kombat movie -- not the first, obviously. I will say, it's much better than both films from the 1990s. I will also say that, for the most part, I enjoyed it more than "Mortal Kombat 11" and its garbage DLC "Aftermath."
Come for me all you want, but I am standing by my thoughts on that game and its DLC.
Overall, I did like this new "Mortal Kombat" movie. It was entertaining. However, I have...a lot of issues with it, too, pertaining to lore, acting, and special effects.
What was the best part of this movie? If I had to pick one? Oh, definitely Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion. He is one of the best Japanese actors working today. He's one of the best actors working today. Having him play such an important character was probably the best choice the producers made.
Also, quick side note: Hiroyuki is 60 years old. HOW?! I mean, he doesn't look 20, but 60? I have my doubts.
Also, this is the first time I've heard him speak English. Interesting.
Another wise decision the producers made for this movie is casting Josh Lawson as Kano. I don't like Kano. He's a dick, but Josh gave the idiot a sort of douchebag charm that you couldn't help but be amused by.
So, what did I like, broken down:
Josh Lawson and Hiroyuki Sanada
The opening scene and final fight were the best scenes in the movie. Fantastically done, both of them.
Some cute little references to MK lore: a picture of Nightwolf, the use of "flawless victory," the use of "fatality," some suspiciously MK-sounding music cues, the massive statue of Shao Kahn...There were some nice fan service moments.
The fights, even the training ones, were all entertaining. Kind of like with "Godzilla vs Kong," the action is one of the strongest points of "Mortal Kombat" (2021).
The concept of the dragon brand to indicate who would fight in MK tournaments was actually a great choice. It does give the writers an excuse to not worry about including EVERY MK character; only the ones who have been "chosen" can fight at this time. It makes sense, it works, it's intriguing.
Kung Lao slicing Nitara in half (Sorry, Nitara -- love ya, Girl!) with his "spinning hat" technique was probably the most Mortal Kombat kill of the movie. It was extremely graphic, bloody, gross, over-the-top...it was perfect.
Hanzo toasting Bi-Han with his classic fire breath was a badass move if I ever saw one.
I did like how Mileena's mouth "worked" in this movie. She had sharp teeth and reddened skin(?) around her mouth to indicate that there was something not quite right with her face. Then she gets pissed later in the movie and opens her jaw completely, revealing an almost snake-like mouth, the skin tearing in the process. It was pretty badass. I liked it.
I actually liked Raiden a lot in this movie. I don't particularly like him in the games (don't come for me -- it's just my opinion) but I thought he was awesome in this movie, a truly intimidating but wise presence. His lack of full assistance made more sense in this movie, too (again, don't come for me because this is just my opinion).
The special effects were sometimes quite good. Sub-Zero's ice powers were well made, for example. Another example is Goro, who was fantastic (so much better than he did in the 1995 movie).
The backstory behind the main weapon of Hanzo was a pleasant surprise: it was a gardening tool to being with, and he just so happened to find it and turn it into a weapon.
Mixed thoughts:
The acting was decent overall. The only two I thought did great were Josh Lawson and Hiroyuki Sanada, but everyone else was ok. Some of the performances got a little hammy at times, but...I'm not going to take too many points off for that.
I liked Mileena but also was disappointed. She wasn't as malicious and flirty as she normally is; like she was watered down in this movie for some reason. However, she still was a dangerous fighter and her mouth was crazy! đ
What I didn't like:
Some things didn't look so great. When Jax lost his arms, it looked...well it looked like blatant CGI. The lighting barrier Raiden created to protect his fighters from Shang Tsung looked pretty cheap as well. Some set pieces looked a bit too much like set pieces. I know we're on a set because this is a movie. However, when it looks kind of obvious, it really distracts you. I know this is a Marvel movie or something, but I think the special effects and sets could have looked a bit more refined.
I preferred the Quan Chi twist in regards to the death of Hanzo's family. It provided a much more complicated revenge story, and...I just think it was a better choice than making Bi-Han the murderer, like in this movie. I get that if they did use the Quan Chi twist, this movie would have become, like, 5 hours long or something, and would have had yet another character to develop (or attempt to develop). Still, it's not my favorite take on the Sub-Zero vs Scorpion story. So...meh.
Reptile looked impressive. He was more like a ... reptile than usual, you know, as opposed to a humanoid reptile creature. However, he didn't speak and didn't wear any armor, and his role in the movie seemed forced. It felt more like a badly executed fan service moment, like, "Heeeyyyy, it's Reptile, Guys! Ok, kill him because we have too many characters already...."
Cole was a likable guy, but I didn't see a point in his character being in the movie. He isn't an MK character from the games, and this just doesn't seem like the time to make a new character for the franchise. There are so many more MK characters to choose from, I think they could have avoided making up someone.
At the same time, though, this movie does suffer from having too many characters to focus on: Cole Young, Kano, Sonya Blade, Jax Briggs, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Reptile, Mileena, Reiko, Kabal, Shang Tsung, Raiden, Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion, Bi-Han/Sub-Zero, Goro, Nitara...I mean, damn, that's a bunch of characters to cram into one two-hour film. People who know little to nothing about MK may not be bothered by this, but fans like myself most likely will feel disappointed with how certain characters were handled in the movie.
Reiko, what...did they do to you? Did...he even need to be in the movie? I mean, he was just.....there.
Having the concept of "arcana" was just...I don't know. It wasn't a terrible idea but it also made things even less believable. No one got their unique traits due to some sort of weird-ass prophecy or whatever in the games. I suppose the writers used this "arcana" thing as a way to keep the movie flowing and avoid having it be hours long. However, it just didn't sit right with me.
I know this movie is only two hours but I would have liked a little more development for Mileena, Reiko, and even Kabal. Kabal gave us the short version of what happened to him but, again, it was so quick. Like, blink and you'll miss it. I think Mileena and Kabal are two very interesting characters in MK, and having them be so one-dimensional was disappointing.
Hanzo was barely in this movie. It seemed....weird to me. Bi-Han was out there wrecking everyone's shit and Hanzo was somehow trapped in the Netherrealm until Cole was forced to fight Bi-Han one-on-one? I mean, eh? They chose the absolute best actor to play Hanzo but didn't use him much.
I was so disappointed to see Kung Lao killed off. I mean, characters that die in MK games don't always stay dead but still....he was so much fun in this movie (as he should be).
I didn't care for the portrayal of Nitara at all in this movie.
I didn't hate "Mortal Kombat" (2021), but I didn't love it, either. I'd watch it again, and I would watch a sequel, but there is definitely room for improvement. There is a lot of potential for the next MK movie(s) to be much better (this movie had clear potential, too, to be honest). I just hope that maybe the writers will realize this if a sequel is made.
Final grade: C+

Alright, this is gonna be tough because I desperately want to say so much for the game's sake and my own, but it's just so much.
At least the playthrough as a whole exists to show a lot of those things, and there's no shame in some of the impacts the game had for myself going unsaid :)
LONG POST INCOMING, NO 'READ MORE' BECAUSE IT'S RELEVANT TO THE POST AND NOT AN AFTER-THOUGHT
CLICK 'J' ON YOUR KEYBOARD TO SKIP. (Sorry mobile users)
8:48 - Do you have any idea how good a step forward it felt to smash the repressing bulb?
9:50 - So I'll get ahead of myself because this fight shows a lot of the visuals that play into this: Something being the manifestation of guilt for Mari is so incredibly visualized.
Between the base 'Something' being extremely close to the shadow she cast and including the one visible eye that bore down on Sunny and Basil after the hanging, to the stairs incorporating into the design.
The seaweed and spider are more general anxieties though they do circle back to Mari since she saved Sunny, but those two forms don't feel as directly related as the stairs (heights) and base 'Something' forms and what they represent for his repressed guilt.
Could be wrong ;) Tell me what you saw in the forms of 'Something' if you'd like to expand on them :)
12:39 - Just to prove the point before you get to fully see the truth- Something morphs into the figure of Mari hanging. It doesn't fully demonstrate the "eye" aspect yet, but still I just wanted to say kudos on the way 'Something' is shown visually. Formless for a reason, and that form becomes more defined as you understand what it is, exceptional damn thing.
15:43 - Basil's part in all of this makes me so damn sad. Plenty to say later (obviously), but he harbors so much guilt, wants forgiveness so much, and is so (not shown yet) desperate to believe in Sunny's innocence while knowing but not comprehending the truth. The fact he harbors his own 'Something' due to the guilt of all this is heartbreaking, these kids endured a hell no one should. Losing someone so important to you and harboring the guilt and fault of it when nothing of the sort was intended. A childish fight with raised emotions got out of hand and all this came of it.
Hell.
16:30 - I absolutely adore how the photo album is used for this reveal.
Absolutely incredible execution that's specific to this story and its characters and makes piecing (literally) this together tense and grim.
22:27 - I NEVER SPOKE TO OR INTERACTED WITH THE THING IN THE CENTER OF THIS ROOM AND I'M A NORMAL AMOUNT OF UPSET ABOUT THAT >:( lol
29:41 - Okay.
So this reveal as a whole is so unbelievably well paced and incredibly hard hitting.
All game long there's a weight of having lost Mari. Repeatedly it's told that she killed herself and no one can understand why and everyone (MYSELF THE PLAYER INCLUDED) is looking for meaning in little moments, seeking out hints that maybe she was suffering or depressed or this or that.
And while that has gone on FOR THE ENTIRE GAME there has also been this uneasy weight surrounding Sunny/Omori. Visions of Mari twisted and deformed into phantoms of horror.
For the most part I assumed it was just him coping with having lost his sister and maybe a dialogue on how when she was alive he was in her shadow (in his mind) and now that she's gone he remains there?
That was the best I could figure, more or less. But it continued to seem more and more malicious in design and MUCH more 'heavy' in how it's presented as a shadow behind Omori/Sunny throughout his adventure and life.
The weight and 'overshadowed' looks of the scenes felt more and more foreboding and less like a simpler "I'm living in her shadow" story, but I couldn't figure out what it was.
Then these pictures come out and piece things together.
The final result:
Sunny and Mari fighting. (Context appears to be his growing disdain towards playing. It's stated he loved playing, but it's also shown that he begins to dislike how much Mari is dragged away for classes and the like up to and including playing. So my read was that Sunny was upset that their fleeting time together was dedicated to the recital and broke his violin in an emotional blur and the fight occurred.
Alternatively it was accidentally broken and both of their emotions were running high as it happened)
Mari falling to her death.
Sunny and Basil carrying her upstairs and tending to her.
Sunny breaking down as it sinks in.
The visions having Basil say "It's going to be okay" by the bedside. (I perceive that as a memory of what Basil was saying as he tried to manage his emotions during the event)
Sunny and Basil carrying her back downstairs and to the backyard.
The makeshift noose.
And finally the sight that burned itself into Sunny's eyes of her hanging after it was all said and done.
Just holy shit to it all in how it's revealed and handled.
Stories have twists all the time, and I ain't gonna make some bold claim like "Most unpredictable!" "Best twist!" "What a twist!" or whatever, though that'd be funny.
I just want to say this twist worked BEFORE the reveal as a foreboding sense of unease and curiosity- it lent itself to intentionally vague and easily misconstrued explanations, basically- instead of it outright misleading you beyond the characters that believe the lie repeating the lie, it allowed you to mislead yourself.
It did the twist the right way! And well! YOU trick YOURSELF! The people repeating the lie are being lied to or have motivation to repeat the lie! The GAME isn't lying (as so many twists handle it) the game is giving the world reason to mislead and allowing you to be mislead!
Now am I yelling affirmations for the way things SHOULD ALWAYS BE! YES! BUT THAT'S BECAUSE IT'S NOT AS NORMAL AS IT SHOULD BE! lol
31:40 - All the "You will really miss them"s hurt :(
33:25 - Right out the gate, a spoiler for what isn't here:
I looked up the alternate endings of the neutral route and my heart hurts to know Sunny doesn't stick around and Basil dies :(
34:00 - BASIL BEING OVERWHELMED WITH DENIAL AND GUILT AS HE ATTEMPTS TO MENTALLY PROTECT HIS VIEW OF WHO HIS FRIEND IS BY INVENTING A SECOND PARTY THAT DID THIS IS SO FUCKING REAL AND AMAZINGLY DONE.
And it explains the name behind the 'Something'.
'Something' behind you did it. There's 'Something' behind you, isn't there.
'Something' all around us, that potentially being the truth comin' in.
When 'Something' ruined my photos, Basil repressing protecting Sunny by destroying the proof.
Just expertly done.
'Something' being repression of the memory and impending guilt. Dannnng.
36:26 - It's 24 hours after I beat the game as I type all this so here's a gag.
Here's the part where Basil beats some sense into his friend, because after this Sunny gets knocked out and wakes up 200% improved and ready to save Basil from his own guilt by releasing them both from the secret.
So basically Kel dragged us out of bed, then a couple days later Basil beats us up, and that's how Sunny gets better :^) Game Over.
38:46 - This fight made me feel utterly terrible, a highlight being the energy bar saying "Everything is going to be okay".
or at 40:17 - when Basil pokes out Sunny's eye and the screen does this? That's an underutilized but always awesome visual.
41:12 - I THOUGHT I WAS DEAD AT THIS POINT :)
Because just before entering Basil's home on this night you see his Grandma's ghost here. So seeing Sunny here told me "WELL. YOU FUCKED UP!"
42:25 - Like I said, beat some sense into Sunny.
Here's the mental side of things where Basil's beatin' told Sunny to go remember the good times and confront his inner self and I'm being partially facetious because there's plenty to say about what's coming up.
43:15 - Goosebumps every time due to the sincerity and hope of this.
43:40 - Hug for anyone needing that.
51:11 - I could cry again and I just might before this post is done being put together.
This accident was never meant to be.
55:09 - Timestamp is arbitrary, I won't go over every flashback but I do want to say what a beautiful way to use these photos. To relive the memories? To find the strength to overcome and all that? After all these years of suppressing memories? DANNNG I love this game.
1:04:09 - I stepped in poop.
1:04:15 - Barefooted.
1:04:22 - I embraced my failure.
1:12:00 - The violin.
1:13:00 - "The anxious feeling-" "They believed in you" "No matter what you didn't want to disappoint them" I'm filled with love and gonna cry about it.
1:14:00 - So an important theme in the game, as if it has just one, is Sunny suppressing emotions and demonizing himself.
Obviously the ending shows him breaking free from both but I think it's important as hell to look at how he builds up to being able to.
After all the dark moments show him as a bloodied monster, demonstrate a perceived lack of remorse for what he's done (as in he sees himself so poorly that he says "I must not have felt bad about it, I'm a monster", not that he actually doesn't feel bad about it, that he thinks he shouldn't because he's bad), have him stab dream Basil to protect his repression of the memory, the build up to breaking free from that is him remembering the good in him through the lens of his friends.
Both in the real world and in revisiting the memories within the photos.
He hears about the good in himself that he has pretended isn't there and finds the power to overcome this deadened shell he's made.
He learns how to forgive himself by finally remembering he's worthy of forgiveness and is more than his mistake, that even the person he grievously harmed would want him to forgive himself and would understand the mistake didn't define him.
1:15:15 - Just because you did something bad doesn't make you bad, to put it more eloquently than my rambles. He had to learn that.
1:19:20 - I've done this fight 4 times.
You may be wondering why 4 times, it ain't like I replayed the game a ton or anything.
The short of it is:
1) For the good ending :)
2) To see what happens if you go "up" in the hospital- it's a dead end- I assumed it'd be a bad ending. So I got the good ending again :)
3) For the bad ending.
4) FOR THE GOOD ENDING TO WIPE THE HORRIBLE FEELING IN THE PIT OF MY STOMACH AWAY FROM THE BAD ENDING :)
In doing so I did get one layer deeper on the BG of Omori in the fight, here it is:
And I learned on the fourth run that the fight is simpler than I gave it credit lol, Cherish refills your juice, so there is no reason to use Encore. You can get to the end (and deeper more easily) by just using the triple attack and Cherish and Calm down when necessary.
1:29:00 - A summary of the fight is that it's extremely impactful emotionally, but very obviously isn't a "Fun fight". It's great mechanically and story wise for what it's trying to do :)
I'll just say it here: I'm surprised there wasn't an end-game "Omori" fight, you know, in dream world? Because combat is SO good in this. I am lead to believe that the Omori route where you never go outside in the real world has more bosses and zones and would fill what I just implied I wanted- but you're also railroaded into the Neutral endings which are both sad :(
And honestly? That makes sense and I applaud the decision :) Embracing the fantasy world for more 'fights' isn't exactly the path to recovery. Also and I know someone will be bothered I say this because *I'm* bothered I'm saying this- it makes sense since a big predecessor did the same thing lol.
Undertale Genocide has new bosses and a harder end game challenge (Sans) while being the worse ending, while the good ending has a flashy and story/emotionally impactful final fight that isn't as challenging because challenge isn't the point of the morals being explored.
I just bring it up because it's interesting, has a parallel, and after fighting Omori 4 times I really REALLY wanted to do an end-game fight in Dream World.
1:30:00 - forgive me as I cry again. goosebumps and more.
OH NO~!
DRAT!
So I use a cheap video editor and I use the free format of it which limits to 720p and I didn't think twice of it.
I recorded at max, but downgraded after editing.
At 720p you can't see the detail that made me break down crying!
At 1:31:55 Sunny's eyes go wider as he sees Mari as they finally get to experience the duet in this dream state (White Egret Orchid, this is real and happening, I'm taking this to my grave :'( ) he sees her smile and that smile made me break down, but in the 720 it's blurry :(
That's on me, I could have posted the scene raw in HQ but I didn't know it'd compress just enough to be invisible :(
still. that duet scene can make me cry on command. just because of that alone, but also the entire thing.
1:33:42 - Sunny breaks from his shell and feels his emotions again.
1:37:07 - I wish every game would end with a mirror to see yourself.
The 'Despite everything, it's still you' vibe just cements all the growth and experiences that have happened as so much more real when that happens. Bonus points because mirrors in Omori are a time bomb where you can be reminded of the guilt following you- and this one is safe. This one is pure and clean. You did it.
1:37:50 - As I said earlier, going up does nothing. Dead end.
1:39:00 - I have to tell you something.
Simple ending. And yet slams me like two trucks. I'm so proud.
1:41:00 - Post credits scene.
This is so heartwarming and their smiles are the purest thing in the entire world.
1:42:50 - BAD ENDING RECORDING.
All I'll say on that is the bad ending made me feel terrible inside. Give up, live in your bubble, and subconsciously end it all so you never have to confront reality again.
My gut felt heavy to be honest.
And the fact that THAT is when Bo En Time is played is INCREDIBLE.
Having the sky shift like that gave goosebumps and cemented my dread.
Just seeing it now has me feeling very poorly.
Okay. Video done.
Now for general thoughts.
First off this White Space cycle has been going on for YEARS with Sunny only getting worse as he suppresses things more and more and the reason he found the strength to overcome is because of his friends and I'm gonna yell about it.
THE REASON SUNNY IS BREAKING FREE CAN BE DIRECTLY POINTED AT KEL THINKING "FUCK IT, I'M ABOUT TO LOSE A FRIEND, AND I DON'T WANT TO"
And I just think that is sweet as hell. The strength was inside himself, but the problem itself caused Sunny to demonize and not trust himself- he needed someone to break him free and help convince him that he's not irredeemable. And boom.
The way this game handles Denial and even gives it physical form with the 'Something's that both Sunny and Basil harbor is just awesome.
I touched on it but combat in Omori is very, very good.
I've said it here and there as I played and I feel like going at length in the finale post is pointless because this isn't a review but to put it concisely.
Types changing mid-combat, the character archetypes being so well defined, the follow up system, combat in Omori is some top notch turn based RPG stuff.
Like up there with the greats, the timeless masterpieces. This is GOOD fighting. So it was surprising the good ending didn't emphasize it- I explained why that makes sense, but even still! It'd probably be lesser for it (as explained previously) but it's interesting they practiced that restraint for the message they wanted to send.
Repeatin' that Mari's smile in the recital made me cry. Burned in my brain.
I'm still surprised I got the post credits scene because I DID water the plants a lot but when the game showed me them all dead I assumed that was the fail condition.
I genuinely do want to try the Omori route some time down the road. I hope I get around to it.
I am slightly dissuaded just because the Omori route only gets the neutral endings which are not Good To Be Blunt :(
But I want to see what dream content there is and I hear there are other bosses!
Other small bits from my notes:
Replacing denial (the black bulb) with hope (the white bulb) was good as heck.
The imagery of the 'Something' is so top notch- using the shadow of her body combined with the piercing gaze of her single eye- MY GOD.
The fragility of life being so present- between memories of near death experiences, to the way in which Mari dies, to the ease at which either Basil or Sunny can end the game. It's tense and heart-wrenching.
The way the 'Something' behind Sunny almost always shadows over him like an ever present weight.
Tearful, hopeful, pure, kids enduring a guilt metric tons heavier than their bodies could ever handle and finally, finally moving beyond it.
I said more in a personal post, and I'll reblog that.
Honestly, just timestamping through the video took it out of me and got the point across.
Omori is a wonderful game.
It's definitely a favorite for me, high up there on my list.
Between the themes, the gameplay, the humor, the ending.
This is a good one.
And now I get to end having experienced all the care and love in this title, that's such a sweet thing.
Now I know this finale post is a mess, illegible even. I have gotten sloppier as I've begun embracing just 'experiencing and rambling' and perhaps my formatting with change yet again until I find something more easily shared.
Despite that. I want to thank any who popped in on this playthrough.
This was a good one, a highlight of the blog for sure- and I'm always happy when I see some people enjoying the absolute mess I toss online when I do one of these :P
So thank you for your time, and thank you to any ridiculous enough to read my nonsense here.
Have a good one :)
And just as expected I feel I've said nothing and barely touched the surface as the post-game-head of mine does a poor job lol. Even still :P

The Walking Dead Season 11: Who Lives and Who Dies
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This Walking Dead article contains major spoilers.
Many of us thought this day would never come, but as all of The Walking Deadâs characters know very well, everything that has a beginning has an end. Season 11 of AMCâs flagship zombie drama will be the showâs final run of episodes, but fortunately itâs an expanded season. Fans will get 24 more episodes, broken up into three parts, before the show â and a few of its characters â meets its end.
And it wouldnât be a season of The Walking Dead without a few big deaths along the way. As we have in past seasons, weâve made some predictions regarding who will bite the bullet in season 11. For the final time, here are the characters we think are on the chopping block and the ones we believe will live on to remember them after the credits roll on the series finale.
Keep track of all The Walking Dead season 11 deaths below:
DEAD
Roy (C. Thomas Howell)
Prediction: Dies
Result: Dead
Roy took an arrow to the face during a Reaper ambush.
Gage (Jackson Pace)
Prediction: Dies
Result: Dead
Gage stabbed himself in the chest twice, attempting to kill himself before being devoured by walkers in a train car. Zombie Gage was then put down with a shot to the head by Gabriel.
ALIVE
Pope (Ritchie Coster)
Prediction: Dies
Iâve never seen a guy more likely to die in the first half of a Walking Dead season than Pope, the leader of the showâs newest villains, the Reapers, who themselves strike me as filler villains for Maggie and Daryl while the real story at the Commonwealth develops. I assume the Reapers will be out of the picture by the time Alexandria needs to turn its attention to the much larger settlement in the second part of season 11.
Pamela Milton (Laila Robins)
Prediction: Dies
The Governor of the Commonwealth is poised to be the final seasonâs big bad. A bureaucrat hellbent on preserving the way things were before the zombie outbreak, Milton even established a caste system within her settlement to propagate class inequality. She represents everything that was wrong with the world before the fall of society and the complete anti-thesis of how the Alexandrians do things.
If youâve read the comics, you know how Pamelaâs story ends in Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlardâs story, but the TV series is known for taking sharp left turns when you least expect it. One thing we know for sure is that the Alexandrians will have to reckon with Pamelaâs rule before the series finale.
Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton)
Prediction: Dies
A Commonwealth acolyte and bookkeeper of the community, Lance is one of Miltonâs chief personnel, helping her run the settlementâs government. Heâs also seems like cannon fodder to me as things heat up between the Commonwealth and Alexandria, an early death that could spark a conflict between the two factions.
Mercer (Michael James Shaw)
Prediction: Lives
Mercer is loyal to the Commonwealth but there are more sides to him than his distinct orange military armor lets on. Heâs one of the most interesting characters of the comicâs final storyline, and it would be a shame to lose him before we can see his story through.
Elijah (Okea Eme-Akwari)
Prediction: Lives
Elijah made his debut in one of the most WTF moments of season 10 when he rescued Aaron and Alden from the Whisperers. For weeks after his reveal, people wondered who the man in the steal mask could be. When he returned in the final six episodes of season 10, the show just kind of moved on without fleshing him out, which is unfortunate since he looks so cool! Iâm going to assume that the series is saving a big Elijah-focused episode for later in the season and that heâs too awesome to kill off. You donât just introduce a blade expert in a steel mask for no reason!
Virgil (Kevin Carroll)
Prediction: Dies
Virgil has a lot to atone for after kidnapping and drugging Michonne in season 10. At the end of the season, we learn that heâs found a disoriented Connie in the woods. His redemption arc will likely include helping Connie survive on the walker-infested road back to Alexandria. Will that eventually involve a final sacrifice to save her?
Connie (Lauren Ridloff)
Prediction: Lives
Connieâs been through a hell of a lot in the past season. After surviving an explosion, a cave-in, and an entire walker horde, Connieâs made it out of Whisperer territory but is still a ways from home. Expect part of season 11âs story to be about Connieâs odyssey and ultimate reunion with her sister and Daryl.
Lydia (Cassady McClincy)
Prediction: Lives
Lydia was at the center of Alexandriaâs conflict with the Whisperers for a season and a half. With Alpha and Beta defeated, and their faction all but obliterated, I have to wonder what Lydia has left to do on the show. That said, the writers have continued to find interesting ways to explore this character, and someone has to live on to lead the next generation of Alexandrians. I think Lydia is in it for the long haul.
Magna (Nadia Hilker)
Prediction: Dies
Magna was sidelined pretty quickly after her introduction. While a reunion with Yumiko seems like the logical direction for her story, The Walking Dead universe is a cruel one. She could be headed toward tragedy.
Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura)
Prediction: Lives
In season 11, Yumiko is inheriting a major storyline from the comics that likely means sheâll survive the final 24 episodes of the series. Of course, the TV show could always alter that storyline to bring a tragic end to Yumikoâs story.
Luke (Dan Fogler)
Prediction: Dies
Itâs pretty wild that Luke has survived as long as he has. A man of the arts hardly has a place in the cruel world of this show, but he has clumsily persevered thus far. But if the writers are planning an especially bloody final season, Iâd put Luke on the short list.
Kelly (Angel Theory)
Prediction:Â Lives
Kelly has been one of the best late additions to the show. It would suck for her to finally reunite with her sister only to meet an unexpected end.
Alden (Callan McAuliffe)
Prediction:Â Dies
Another candidate for the chopping block. Iâm surprised heâs even made it this long.
King Ezekiel (Khary Payton)
Prediction:Â Lives
Yes, Ezekiel has thyroid cancer, and were he in Alexandria, that would mean his inevitable death. But the Commonwealth is a different ballgame, an advanced settlement in the comics that will likely have the doctors and surgical resources needed to save him. That is, if Ezekiel isnât caught up in Miltonâs caste system.
Jerry (Cooper Andrews)
Prediction: Dies
I love Jerry and donât want to see the tank with a heart of gold go. But if the season needs an early death that pulls at the heart strings, Jerry is a prime candidate for a midseason casualty.
Father Gabriel Stokes (Seth Gilliam)
Prediction:Â Lives
Gabriel has evolved so much since his debut in season 5, becoming one of Alexandriaâs key leaders. Heâs come so far and even survived longer than his comic book counterpart. Iâd hate to see him go so close to the end. So Iâm just going to say he lives.
Aaron (Ross Marquand)
Prediction:Â Lives
Aaron seemed destined to die seasons ago, too kind and trusting to survive this long. But here he is, still fighting and surviving. Heâs lost the man he loves, his arm, and many friends â and itâs all hardened him into a war machine. Itâd be a shame for him to die now.
Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos)
Prediction: Lives
In the comics, Rositaâs head ended up on a pike during the Whisperer war, but her TV counterpart has persevered. Itâs difficult to predict where her story goes at this point, but since she survived her comic book death, I assume the showâs writers have something in mind for her in season 11.
Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt)
Prediction: Lives
Eugene has become an unlikely protagonist going into season 11. From a mulleted coward hiding behind his intelligence so that others protect him to the Alexandrian leading his people to the Commonwealth, Eugene is central to the plot of the final season, and I think that means heâs safe. Plus, Eugene is hilarious, and The Walking Dead can always use a little comedic relief.
Judith Grimes (Cailey Fleming)
Prediction: Lives
Result: Lived
NO.
Rick Grimes Jr. (Antony Azor)
Prediction: Lives
Nah.
Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan)
Prediction:Â Lives
I think The Walking Dead is going to end with one last big death, one last sacrifice before the credits roll on the massive zombie drama. Like Rick in the comics, one of the major characters of the TV series will likely become the martyr who inspires change inside the Commonwealthâs walls. Negan would probably be on the short list for this big moment from the comics, a villain finally choosing to do the right thing for a cause bigger than himself, a fitting conclusion to his seasons-long redemption arc. But Jeffrey Dean Morgan recently teased that he was already having discussions with AMC about a potential Negan spinoff after The Walking Dead has concluded, which means the former Savior leader is safeâŠunless the Negan show is a prequel.
Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride)
Prediction: Lives
This oneâs an easy one: Melissa McBride is getting her own spinoff that will follow her character after The Walking Dead series finale. That means sheâs safe.
Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus)
Prediction: Lives
Norman Reedus is joining McBride for that spinoff, so heâs safe, too. The actor even told us what the Daryl and Carol show will be about.
Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan)
Prediction: Dies
That leaves The Walking Dead with one logical choice to pick up Rickâs final storyline from the comic. Itâs Maggie. It also makes a bit of sense from a logistical standpoint. Lauren Cohan has already left The Walking Dead universe once before to pursue other small and big screen projects. Sheâs back for the final 24 episodes of the series as a welcome legacy character but that doesnât mean Cohan wants to stick around for longer than that. I assume Cohanâs returned to bring closure to her character, not to prepare for a spinoff.

RWBY Volume 8 Episode One: Quick Thoughts
Or not so quick, seeing how long it took me to write this and how much I ended up having to say. Spoilers (duh) under the cut, as this thing got insanely long.
So we open with a maid scrubbing a floor, a shot that lasted long enough I was starting to wonder where it was going before we cut to Cinder. So, Cinder backstory - interesting way to open the volume, but Iâm not sure if itâs a good way. At the very least, I would have cut it a couple seconds, or have it flash between Cinderâs face and the flashback. Same information, but given in a quicker manner that lets us know exactly what weâre seeing instead of wonder who this random maid is for 10 seconds.
Whale aircraft carrier. The design is interesting, if looking a bit too clean for my taste. I wouldâve liked to see the bones and muscles of the Grimm incorporated into the design a bit more, the surfaces less smooth and more textured, but it looks good.
Facial acting on Neo is good - I appreciate being able to see whatâs running through her head, even if it also makes me wonder why Salem isnât picking up on the obvious tells.
Emerald and Mercury are back and with new outfits; I can hear the diehard EmMerc fans screaming from here. Wouldâve liked a better look at the whole outfits (I donât think thereâs even one close up of their entire bodies), but I like Mercuryâs! Emeraldâs model feels off to me for some reason, like itâs wider or more padded (?) than before, but itâs not a big deal and is probably just a result of her wearing a jacket now.
Oh, yeah, Hazel got one too, donât care.
Why does the whale have a screen? A connection to one of those seer orb Grimm?
Cinder is still not interesting to me, but I am curious - can one woman hold multiple maiden powers? What happens if one woman holds them all? If they can hold multiple powers, what happens when they die? Do they both/all go to the same person, or would they split?
I like the Faunus that gives Oscar the soup. His design is pretty cute to me (I think heâs a mole Faunus?), and I feel like heâs based on something, but Iâm not sure what. Getting a Narnia vibe for some reason, which Iâm always on board for.
How did Ruby know where Oscar ended up? Did he call?Â
Weissâs braid looks much better! Iâm still not a huge fan of it, but this model is an enormous improvement - it actually looks like hair instead of rope, itâs slicker, and doesnât look as heavy. Nice job, animators. Blakeâs looks better, too, more fluffy, but itâs not as drastic a change to me.
Nice to see the Happy Huntresses actually doing something to help Mantle, and having Joanna(? thatâs her name, right?) take charge and be helping Ruby get Oscar back in exchange for their aid is nice. It feels realistic for a situation like this.
And more secret keeping, but in this case, dropping the Oz bombshell would actually probably be a bad idea. Thereâs enough going on, bringing up Oz being back can wait until tensions arenât as high.
Why would Ironwood stop evacuation? That makes no sense for his character, and thereâs no reason to stop them. Until he gets Penny back, Atlas isnât going anywhere. Might as well keep evacuating until you can find here, get as many people to safety as possible before getting away. Iâd assume the Doylist answer for this is that Mantle still needs to be a factor in any decisions made after this and it canât be that if we can get everyone evacuated, but that doesnât make the Watsonian explanation make more sense.
Actually a good plan, getting everyone into the crater if it is in fact warm (why, I wonder? Thermal vents? Heat coming off of Atlas?) solves the cold problem (that people shouldâve probably already died from) and having to defend one smaller location is strategically a good option. Corralling people would also make any eventual evac to Atlas easier. There is the small problem of, you know, Atlas literally crushing anyone in the crater if the staff is used on anything else, and Salem is known to be after that Staff, sooooooo -
Okay, maybe a nitpick, but I thought Piertoâs specialty was prosthetics and robotics. Doesnât seem like something that necessarily overlaps with whatâs needed to convert Amity into a satellite. I guess maybe the engine/whatever is going to propel it into the air could be similar to Pennyâs boosters/whatever lets her fly, but it doesnât seem like something that he would be involved in raising Amity. Whatever - I know we need a scientist person to tell these things to RWBY+Co and Pierto is the most likely candidate to be in a position to do that.
It seems like, from Rubyâs dialogue, she both wants to warn the other kingdoms and ask for their help. This has been trampled to death, so I wonât rant, but - there is no one thatâs going to be able to help. Argus is hours away, will take time to assemble, and isnât a very large force to begin with. Mistral is still weakened from V5 and has next to no huntsman, and is even farther than Argus. No idea whatâs going on with Vale, but theyâre probably still nursing their wounds from the Fall. Vacuo is the only kingdom likely to be able to muster up a force, but theyâre on the other side of the map and will take hours, if not days, to get together an army - and thatâs if they decide they want to help at all. The other objective was warning the Kingdoms about Salem. Ignoring that Salem is immortal and can just throw as many Grimm as she pleases until the defenses fall, ignoring that the other Kingdoms might not even believe Ruby, whatâs to say they wonât go âF*ck Atlas, theyâre on their ownâ and recall every available Huntsman and Huntress to shore up their own defenses? Or what if the other kingdoms just fall into anarchy? Learning an immortal witch with an endless supply of Grimm will come knocking on your doorstep soon tends to cause chaos. Or is Ruby going to leave the whole immortal part out again? I just canât see what this will accomplish.
Holy shit, itâs actually happening. Dissent from WBY, and itâs coming from Yang of all people - I love it. I wish Yang had gotten to finish her sentence, say something along the lines of âMaybe if weâd told the truth immediately things wouldnât have gone this wayâ since that would fit with her âhate secretsâ thing she had going on in V5/6, but the fact that Yang is actually questioning Rubyâs leadership and choices - yes yes yes, more of that please, less of the hive mind. I wish itâd come a little earlier, but at this point Iâll take what I can get.
Iâm slightly confused at the sides that Ren and Nora are taking here. I like that weâre splitting them up here (we never get to see them separated, and after last volume, I am more than on board with letting Ren get some breathing room), but Ren going with Yang, Jaune, and Oscar to help evacuate Mantle while Nora goes on the âbigger pictureâ team to get Amity up and running seems weird considering where they were last volume. Nora was always screaming about how the big picture stuff was hurting Mantle, while Ren was pushing to keep training, keep working, support Ironwood and try and work at the big picture problem, so it would seem like they should be on opposite sides. Iâm not saying it makes no sense - I can absolutely see Ren feeling protective of towns under attack from Grimm with no Huntsmen in their corner - but it feels like a bit of a 180 from their last positions.Â
Did Oscar just call Jaune âJohnâ?
Yeah, if nothing else, donât let Penny get anywhere near Salem or her cronies. Salem can absolutely not be allowed to get her hands on the Staff, especially with the whole âget everyone to the craterâ plan. Squish.
Yang and Blake splitting up, maybe we can actually get some conversations on what the hell is up with them that we should have gotten in V6/V7 instead of petty showing off and Nora projecting.
âBut what about Mantle?â âOh, Iâm helping Mantle.â with the same thing you spent all last volume complaining about. Uh-huh, thatâs not annoying.
Weiss has an idea on how to get up to Atlas - Winterâs ship, maybe? That one she came in on in V3 was her personal ship, wasnât it?
Ironwood calls Penny. From the music, it sounds like they were aiming for foreboding and manipulative, but Ironwood just sounds tired, the poor man. Love how Ruby doesnât even try for a comeback for Ironwoodâs argument, really convincing.
Dead Clover, and I hope that he stays that way, because if heâs brought back to life, so much of V6âČs themes of life and death and the natural cycle is just going to be spit on (again). Clover is dead, and there should be no way around that save interference from a literal god. Any attempt at bringing him back needs some kind of drawback - some prevision of life, a body that moves but his soul isnât there, something, please RT, donât double back on your âDeath is permanentâ thing again.
And Ironwood did lose his arm completely. Itâs an awesome looking prosthetic, but the fact that itâs black when the rest of his prosthetics are silver, combined with the comments made by the CRWBY about Ironwoodâs humanity, make me very afraid theyâre going to go for some sort of bullshit parallel to Cinderâs black Grimm arm. I do like the orchestral version of Hero playing here, though.
I like Winterâs new hair style - similar enough to her previous one, but looser. Not exactly happy about what that might symbolize, but it looks really good. It looks like she might have nerve damage, though, which would mean she might be off the battlefield until she can get her hands (hah) on some sort of brace to help her move her hands (which might be hinted at in the OP~)
I do really like Ironwood and Winterâs relationship, please donât f*ck it up, CRWBY.
Is the only thing CRWBY knows how to do to make Ironwood seem like the bad guy shoot people for no goddamn reason? Ironwood was surrounded by loyal soldiers after declaring martial law, there was no reason for him to not just order Slate detained (that one was Slate, right? Not that it matters). The manâs annoying and probably in cahoots with Jacques, but shooting him is out of character, excessive, and makes no sense when he could just be arrested. âIt shows heâs slipping -â No. Itâs lazy writing meant for shock value and to give characters a reason to go âOh, heâs going evil now, I better question my loyalty to himâ (based on the look Winter and Harriet share) rather than any actual flaw in his plans maybe because CRBY realized that Ironwoodâs plans are rational and the best one on the table right now, so they canât use that to turn people against him. F*ck that.
Salem sends a bloodhound or whatever after Oscar, we already saw this bit in the trailers. No comment.
TLDR: Once again, RWBY sets up a lot of stuff that I find interesting and want to see more of. However, their treatment of Ironwood doesnât make me optimistic for them to treat him right, and RWBY has a track record of setting up good concepts/plots/characters/arcs and then failing to execute them well or at all. Weâll have to see if V8 actually lives up to the promise or falls flat due to the issues that plagued V6 and V7 .
Going to make a whole new list for the OP because dear Lord, this thing is dense.
This song is definitely more in line with RWBYâs usual sound than Trust Love, and Iâm all for that. The beat is a little hinky to me - itâs going to take a few re-listens to get used to it - and once again I wish the lyrics were clearer, but I know people that werenât as happy with V7âČs sound will be happy with this return to form.
Establishing shots of Mantle going to hell, nice use of red and contrast, but I wish there was a bit more use of shadow to really sell the red coming from fires and emergency lights.
Ruby standing alone, turning to find the others standing at the ready to fight, but away from her and with their backs turned. Any chance of more dissent? Will we actually get some growth from Ruby, in regards to her leadership in particular? We can only hope.
The four girls, on a blackish/blue background with floating warm lights, with images of their V1 selves in their clothes/hair/weapons. I really love the animation in the portion, the girls look so good. It also makes me wish weâd get some sort of flashback to V1-3, because I want more of their Beacon designs in the new animation style. The fact that this background/setting shows up again later in the trailer makes me wonder if it might be what the interior of the Atlas vault looks like. No basis for that, just a random thought. Couple minor nitpicks, focused on Yang. The fact that sheâs the only one not in a more dynamic pose (and this is Yang of all people) seems odd, and the way her hair flows looks weird to me based on the angles and whatnot. Putting her in a different pose like a charge would fix this, letting her hair flow more naturally and giving them the space they need to to add in her past self. Otherwise, gorgeous.Â
Ironwood with Atlas inside him, slowly being overtaken by the red as he looks up. No real comment other than beautiful.
Clover dropping his pin, with the AceOps and Qrow in the leaves, before transitioning to Qrow taking Robynâs hand in prison. It looks like Harriet will be taking over as team leader. I donât have a lot to say here - Marrowâs the only AceOp Iâm interested in, and Qrow and Cloverâs relationship has never been compelling for me. Robyn, similarly, is not a character I like, so a Qrow/Robyn team-up jailbreak isnât something that Iâm interested in unless Watts is involved. Already teamed up with one villain, Qrow, why stop there?
Oscar in pain holding his head, while Grimm eyes surround him and then Salem with wyvern wings comes out and looms over him preparing to grab him. I like the visual of Salem as the Wyvern at Beacon, but her face looks almost doofy in this shot. I think itâs the lack of expression mixed with the eyes. If she had a more menacing expression, I think this would work a lot better.
The falling weapons of the girls, Crescent Rose with Myrtenaster and Gambol Shroud with Ember Celica. Cue the shippers.
Jaune with his sword in front of his face, pulling it down to be at the ready, with Nora and Ren in the far background, their backs turned on each other but looking sad at their positions. I know Jauneâs thing is probably generic, but it gives me Mulan vibes, which is funny considering. Hey, hint that Martial Arcs will become canon now that Renora is on the rocks? fingers crossed More of Ren and Noraâs rough patch, and I really hope that that gets some focus. Their kiss last volume left a bad taste in my mouth with how it went down, and getting into these two as separate characters and their relationship. Ren not requiting Noraâs romantic feelings towards him would be a really interesting place to go with these characters that everyoneâs pegged together since episode 4 (in no small part due to their lack of interaction with anyone else, but Iâll get to that).Â
Winter and Weiss walking towards each other on the Schnee symbol, passing each other by with Winter getting her new hairstyle and a brace of some sort. Sheâs actually wearing this brace in the hospital, but on the other arm, while now itâs on the arm she couldnât bend her fingers with. Interesting, and it looks all looks really good!
The Schnee snowflake falls between Whitley and Willow, before shattering onto a chessboard. YESSSS, Whitleyâs in the intro again! Thatâs more than I couldâve hoped, and I really really hope that him looking contemplatively like that means something - thatâs heâs figuring things out, coming up with a plan, something! Still no new design though T-T CRWBY, what do I have to do to get my boy some new clothes?
From the chessboard, Salem rises up, turning the other black pieces into Grimm to attack the white where Ironwood stands. His pieces turn to dust, the board blowing away entirely. Nice callback to V1. Ironwood stands alone - no allies, and no space to move forward. Heâs a king with nowhere to move - check or checkmate.Â
Smug Watts hacking while leaning against a mirror, rotates to show Pierto doing the same, his reflection looking over its shoulder at him, then a pan to Penny to show the same thing before the mirror breaks. Iâm not sure what this might symbolize. Inability to trust yourself, maybe?
A snowflake flies through the air and lands in Renâs palm. It turns into a flower petal, (or scraps his hand, I canât quite tell) then Yang, Jaune, and Oscar join him, Ren smiling to Jaune. Another flower petal flies by to transition to Nora, who reaches out but canât catch it, looking dismayed until RWBP comes in to join her. I assume the symbolism is straight-forward - the snowflake turns to a petal when caught by Ren (lotus guy), then flies to Nora who canât catch it. Really living for the Ren focus in the op~
Pans to a shot of the whole group in the middle of everything - Atlas and Mantle overrun with Grimm on one side, Salemâs whale and Grimm army on the other, and Amity in the middle, which Penny flies up to hover below. Penny is going to be vital to launching Amity, and probably for reasons other than the terminal.
Then Ruby and Yang looking at each other with a smile and nod before the girls jump into fighting some Grimm. Interesting bit when the volume opens with the sisters starting to have disagreements.
The entire thing freezes, Cinder strolling cockily past the crew to walk in front of a bored/disgruntled Neo and Emerald who starts to wave but looks dejected when Cinder ignores her. Not much to say here - I donât really like the freeze frame for some reason, no idea why. This also doesnât give us any new info on the dynamics between these three characters.
Cinder grabs her Grimm arm in pain as fire flares up behind her, transitioning into Merc, Tyrian, Hazel, and Salem with the lamp in her eyes, transitioning to the lamp and staff twirling around each other, both emitting smoke like theyâre being used as they come together. I wonder if this means that the last question and the Staff are going to be used, and maybe together? Once again, though - Atlas falling, people in the crater die.
Smoke clears up to reveal Ruby, looking up to Atlas first in invasion mode, then peaceful. Turn to a shot of the group standing looking to the left, Yang and Ruby looking like theyâre posed but the others just kind of standing there. Itâs a weird shot, and Iâm not sure what to make of it, honestly.
The ice breaks beneath Rubyâs feet, sending RWBY falling into a void, their bodies trailing those lights that we saw before. Ruby opens her eyes to see the brightest light, the Staff. She reaches out to it, but Grimm paws and hands drag her down. V6 callback?
The word Happy? flashes only to be crossed out, a sketchy Grimm roaring, then the words Ever then Never as itâs crossed out, with a sketchy Penny lifting her head and her eyes then face going red, then the words After Again being crossed out. Iâm not really of the words - I think itâs going for a Happily Ever After Happy? Never Again thing, but thereâs no Happily that I can see, and it just kind of comes across as a bit emo to me. I like the sketches of the Grimm and Penny - I think it might be a Wyvern Grimm or something like that, and the red spreading from Pennyâs eyes to her entire outline is interesting. I wonder if itâs connected to the Maiden powers and how sheâll use them.
Sketches of RWBYâs weapon fall into the snow, Crescent Rose falling with the tip stuck in the snow, then a flash and a pull out to Crescent Rose in the snow in full animation, framed by the broken moon as rose petals fly by with the âCreated by Monty Oumâ credit appears. I really like this as a reference to the Red trailer, and compared to the very cluttered ending shot of V7, this is a nice change of pace.
I like this OP. Itâs definitely above V7âČs for me, with a good song and some beautiful animation in itâs visuals. If I had to criticize it, I would say that it feels very long and cluttered. My breakdown of the opening feels as long as everything I mentioned in the actual episode. I realize one was going almost shot by shot, while the other summarized, but the point still stands that this things feels longer than it needs to be (Iâd have to check time stamps to see if it is actually significantly longer).
A more promising start, all in all, than Iâd hoped for. Things irritate me for sure, Ironwoodâs treatment, Rubyâs plan, all that stuff, but I know I would have those bones to pick going in. The shake-up of the usual teams and the promise of inter-group conflict is enough to get me to want more, and I look forward to seeing how my favorite characters will be utilized.Â
What are your thoughts on the episode? Reblog and comment down below, and weâll start a convo.
Until next time~

Epithet Erased Role Swap AU FanFic: A swapped place in Sweet Jazz City Prologue
Hi, This is just a quick Fanfiction I've written up based on the amazing Role Swap AU made by @spliinkles. I actually did have a somewhat similar idea before (which was what if some epithet related event caused characters to switch ages) but I really love the ideas of this AU and wanted to write about it.
Sorry first of all if there are any errors. I wrote this up kind of quickly and if I do find errors I will be willing to fix them if I get around to it.
Am posting this fanfiction here because the Epithet Erased fandom seems biggest on Tumblr and also that's where this AU is from.
Prologue: You're reading it
Chapter 1: https://professoruber.tumblr.com/post/189841325568/a-swapped-place-in-sweet-jazz-city-chapter-1
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Giovanni Potage was what some might call a variety of unflattering yet undeniably accurate descriptors. Such things included âproblem childâ and âwannabe delinquentâ, both titles he wore with pride.
With the exception of the âwannabeâ part of course, if you were to ask him, he would insist he was the most feared delinquent in his schoolâs history and most definitely not an adorable little soup child.
His reign of delinquency was joined by his friends, his âboysâ as he called them. Two of these aforementioned boys were now accompanying him on the most boring field trip ever.
â-and thatâs when I smash that ball right into the principleâs office, and everyone cheeredâ Giovanni finishes accounting his latest most definitely truthful anecdote about his misadventures as a dangerous criminal delinquent. Â His squeaky twelve-year-old vocal cords pushed to their deepest potential level in order to attempt to put on a wave of coolness on top of what he considers his amazing storytelling ability.
âWOW GIOVANNI. YOUâRE SO AMAZING! I LOVE YOU SO MUCHâ Screams one of his friends, known most often as Crusher for rather self-explanatory reasons. The high volume of his sudden outburst eliciting a glare from one of the museum guides who were currently giving a tour to their class.
The young guide turns away from the crowd of youths briefly to pop another pain pill before taking a deep breath and snapping back towards the kids with a forced smile.
âAs I was saying before I was⊠interruptedâŠâ she began, briefly pausing to once again glare at Crusher, who blessed with embarrassment and hid behind the protection of Giovanni as she continues âEpithets are rare and amazing powers gifted to just a one in five of the population. Wow, so cool. Anyway, moving onâŠâ she begins to keep walking before being lightly nudged by her older bearded co-guide.
âCome now my apprentice Mera. It is important to show enthusiasm for this thing. Itâs important to always do your best in every situationâ the man says the last sentence with such sheer power that he flexes for emphasis, prompting a array of awed stares bystanders at his muscular build.
Mera even admires it for a moment before turning back to the children and sighing âYouâre right Indus⊠Iâll try to spice up the tour a bitâ she gives a somewhat more genuine smile this time, as Indus pats her on the back.
âNow thatâs the spirit! Why donât we tell them about the Arsene Amulet, that will certainly spice things upâ Indus suggests with large genuine smile aimed at his young apprentice.
Mera goes wide eyed at the mention of the amulet before whispering to Indus âUh⊠Indus Iâm not sure if telling these kids about the amulet is a good ideaâ
Indus looks thoughtful but nevertheless was still in proud teacher mode âDo not worry apprentice Mera. No harm should come from granting these children some of the wonder of this museumâ
Mera eventually relents and soon launches into a somewhat less half-hearted explanation of the amulet as well as other cool and interesting exhibits, Indus sometimes dropping in to suggest topics, such as the Dinosaur exhibition which he insists is amazing.
However, these were quickly drowned out Giovanniâs criminal mind as itâs focus settled firmly on the fact a mysterious cool amulet was hidden within these halls. An awesomely evil formed from the dark confines of his self-proclaimed delinquent mind.
âCar Crash, Crusher, come with meâ he whispers in his best covert voice before snatching his pair of friends away from the tour. The former blushed at the close contact to his crush while the latter looked annoyed.
âHey, my nameâs Fred. All I did was crash Benâs go-kart five times and now everyone just wonât let it go!â He complains and throws up his hands in annoyance.
âShush, will you? Whatever. I have an awesome plan to show the whole entire world my awesome criminal skills so no one will deny that Giovanni Potage is the most awesome supervillain of all time!â He exclaims quietly with clenched fist.
Crusher loved every moment of It and even âFredâ was captivated by the intensity if nothing else. Â
âI will sneak inside the museum; spray paint my name on the exhibits. And then for the finale I will steal that amulet thingy and leave a pool of boiling lava and⊠uh⊠acid! In its place. These history nerds will never no one hit themâ he gives a smug smile, proud of himself for having come up with such a villainous plan.
Crusher fell to the floor as he clenches his heart, overwhelmed by the sheer continued amazingness of Giovanni. Fred meanwhile was somewhat confused on What Giovanniâs plan was.
âSo, you want to get an amulet which steals Epithets?â he asks with a raised eyebrow.
Giovanni looks confused for a moment before putting two and two together âoh is that what that thing does? Nah thatâs totally lame. What I want is the street cred. If I pull this off then all the greatest criminal gangs will be begging to have me join them. Maybe I might be able to join the Bushido Blasters⊠or even the Banzai Blasters!â He exclaims with enthusiasm.
As Crusher continued to be amazed, Fred scratched the back of his head âI donât know man, this seems kind of dangerous even compared to what we usually get up to. And me and âCrusherâ canât be out after dark, so youâll be alone for thisâ
Crusher cries manly boy tears at the thought of having to abandon Giovanni. But Giovanni simply dramatically holds his hand to his chest and begins to reassure them.
âDonât worry my boys! I have the greatest- hey whatâs that over there!â He suddenly shouts pointing to the left, and grinning as Crusher and Fred look to in that direction. While his friends are distracting, Giovanni quickly dashes behind them and yells âTeleports behind!â, startling both boys.
âAs you can see my stealth skills and unmatched. And after tonight no one will able to deny the supervillainy of Giovanni Potage!â
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Across the city in the backroom of a family owned toy store sat a young barely adult woman wearing a dark green dress and a yellow apron and boots, her dark brown hair tied up to prevent it getting in her face.
The woman was working stoically on toys which would be sold in the Blyndeff Toy Emporium, her familyâs store.
âPolice are still baffled at the recent theft of expensive several statues from a local art gallery, all of which were replaced by teddy bears. Despite the absurdity of this case police have still found no leads on the criminals responsible, although reports suggest Banzai Blasters may have been involved- â the noise drowns out in the womanâs mind as her lips slip into an evil grin as she recalls the recent caper which led to her promotion from Blaster to Captain in the Banzai ranks.
In the monotonous world of manufacturing and retail she was glad to have an outlet to cut loose when she could, keeping up appearances in front of customers and not hitting the many who deserved it was tiring, and sheâs been doing this for around a decade at this point.
Taking a deep breath, she got back to work, turning off the news livestream playing on her phone just had it had begun talking about how a Detective Ashling had been assigned to the case. She had bigger things to concern herself with right now.
Namely that of her first heist as a Banzai Captain. Her crew of minions were ready and a location had been mapped out. Now all she needed to do was complete the final workings of her special criminal helper toys, as well as the toys which need to be sold.
âMolly! Mum wants to know if the new toys are ready yet!â The bratty voice of the womanâs little sister comes through the door of the workshop as the young girl in question walks into take a look herself.
Molly feels like grimacing but instead effortlessly donned a smile as hollow as her soul.
âAlmost done Lorelai. Tell mum Iâll have these out on the shelves soonâ she said with a mask of cheerfulness, to which Lorelai simply rolled her eyes at and gave a quick âWhateverâ before leaving back to the rest of the building, shutting the door behind her.
Molly got back to work, only stopping at one point to take out a small picture of the Sweet Jazz Museum, causing her to gain a much more genuine, and evil smile âtonightâ she simply says, as she returns to work.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Later in the dead of night, Giovanniâs head raises up above from a bin. He leaps out and whisper shouts âTeleports inside!â to himself as he looks around.
He proceeds to run carelessly around the now empty halls of the museum, slipping and knocking some stuff over a few times before arriving in the entrance.
âUh hu! This shall be a great place to begin the reign of terror of Giovanni Potageâ the twelve year out super-criminal announces as he walks up to the desk.
âI should call my boys, to let them know I got it, not that they would be surprised of courseâ He picks up the phone and dials Car Crashâs number, only for it to fail to go through. Confused, Giovanni looks at the phone only to find an explanation of its true nature.
âInternal and emergency calls only? Pfft, lameâ he comments as he slams down the receiver. He then proceeds to duck down under the desk and take out some items from his bag. First a whoopy cushion which he fashions to the chair and then a canister of spray paint.
He begins spray painting a message about how lame their phone system is. Meanwhile as the young delinquent writes, a hole in the roof is silently made and a group of Banzai Blaster begin slowly coming in from above, going unheard from anyone who might be within earshot thanks to their leaderâs Epithet.
The last to go down is their new Captain, Bear Trap, who under the silence of her Epithet begins handing out instructions to her minions.
âThere all doneâ Giovanni says proudly as he finishes his villainous vandalism, popping back up from behind the desk her suddenly comes eye to eye with Bear Trap.
All parties present simply fall back, startled due to not expecting to encounter anyone else. For a few moments silence reigns even without the assistance of Bear Trapâs Epithet.
The silence isnât broken until the shock face of Giovanni suddenly shifts into one of wonder and excitement.
âWow criminals! Awesome!â

That anon is an asshole. Why do you hate Shuichi? I think he fits the theme of truth and lies, but his character development is a complete joke as he has zero struggles after his waifu dead. He never once second guess his actions in class trials and doesnât even think of major consequences (killing the de facto prime minister and not noticing a serial killer is amoung them). His stans over analyze his actions and try to justify everything he does.
They were quite a jerkhole. I can imagine that most stans would be protective of their favorite characters if anyone were to express disapproval.
And thank you for giving me the opportunity to express my personal feelings on the matter anon. And those are some interesting reasons to dislike him but I have some other reasons.
My answers will be hidden under the âRead Moreâ because theyâre long answers. But these are my thoughts and reasons for why I hate Shuichi Saihara.
Reason 1: The Protagonist Switch was Lackluster
Right off the bat, I personally dislike that we were promised a unique and compelling protagonist like Kaede only to switch her with a generic insecure protagonist like Saihara. The use of the protag switch isnât a bad plot twist and it can be clever, itâs just that the result of switching Kaede for someone like Saihara left a bad taste in my mouth.
I loved Kaede because she was unique as a DR protagonist. Along with having a colorful design and talent, she was assertive, confident and willing to take charge. She was actively involved in the story by stepping up as the groupâs de facto leader and trying to motivate them. She was also flawed in the sense that she was quick to butt heads with others and she didnât completely trust others or practice her own beliefs of trusting in friends. And personally, Iâm not even upset that she tried to kill someone. Itâs still considered something different for a DR protagonist to do, especially if it was for the greater good.Â
But when we get Saihara, he continues the trend of being a generic sad boy who feels insecure about his talents and wants to be stronger. Most of his screentime is spent moping about his problems and how he doesnât feel good enough. He doesnât have the same presence as Kaede and just stays in the background while the rest of the cast move the story as much as they can.
In all honesty, if they had introduced Saihara as the new protagonist, or at least make it so that his predecessor wasnât as compelling as Kaede, then I wouldnât have been too upset. At the very least I wouldnât have gotten my hopes up for a protagonist who was actually different compared to the past protags.
Reason 2: Waifus In RefrigeratorsÂ
For those that donât know, fridging is the concept of (brutally) killing off a fictional female character in order to create an emotional impact for her male love interest and his character development.
Kaedeâs death and how it impacted Saihara is textbook fridging.
I strongly detest fridging since it robs a female character of her agency and role in the story. It treats her as a tool meant to motivate her male love interest to either avenge her death or grow as a person. Kaedeâs death along with her final wish is what pushes Saihara to try and beat the killing game. And from then on, Saihara will take the moment to reflect on Kaedeâs tragic end and how he inspired him with her kindness. Kaede loses her identity as a complex leader who was willing to commit murder for a greater good. Everyone just remembers her as Saiharaâs innocent dead love interest who inspired him to keep on fighting. Itâs also worse in the 6th case when itâs revealed that Tsumugi took advantage of Kaedeâs trap to kill Amami which further pushes Kaede into the image of an innocent angel that did no wrong.
And itâs also frustrating since this isnât the only time that the Danganronpa series has killed off its female characters in order to develop their male love interests.
In SDR2, Peko dies trying to save Fuyuhiko which in turn motivates him to stop acting like a jerkhole and be more cooperative with the group.
In DR3 Future Side, Chisa is the first victim of the killing game which pushes her boyfriend Munakata to become a more direct antagonist towards Naegi for protecting the Remnants.
In the same series, Kyoko allows herself to be poisoned in order to protect Naegi. Itâs through her death that Naegi decides to confront Munakata in a final showdown. And while Kyoko does get brought back to life at the end of the show, it should be noted that she was only brought back just to be part of Naegiâs happy ending package. She loses her agency and is brought back just to be his newly revived girlfriend.
In DR3 Despair Side, Chiaki is brutally killed in order for her classmates to become Remnants of Despair. But itâs her final heartwrenching moments with Izuru that inspire emotion inside of him aswell as deciding to turn against Junko.
So Kaede being killed for Saiharaâs development is the fifth fridging example in this series and it sucks that Kodaka and his crew rely on this trope throughout Danganronpa.
Reason 3: The Narrative Forces You To Like Him
Another issue that I found irritating about Saihara is how everyone began praising him.
Just after the first case, everyone constantly praises and coddles Saihara for being such a great detective and for growing so much. For me, that praise feels undeserving since he barely did anything to earn it. Thinking back to each of the past protagonists, they didnât have everyoneâs respect in the beginning. They each had to work had and face adversity throughout their stories in order to earn their praise and respect. Even Kaede, who despite being a confident leader, had to deal with people frequently judging her leadership and actions. So I find it questionable that Saihara already earned everyoneâs respect after solving only one case.Â
By having all the characters praise Saihara, the narrative pushes you to accept him as the new protagonist and recognize how awesome it is to have him. But for me, it just makes me dislike him even more. I refuse to like something just because everyone else does and it wonât take away my admiration/love for Kaede.
Itâs also jarring since anytime a character has the spotlight, it somehow has to involve Saihara.
âWow Himiko! Youâre much more expressive now than before. Just like you Saihara!â
âMan, it sounds like you had a harsh life growing up Harumaki. Just like you and your detective work, eh Shuichi?â
The narrative canât help but force Saihara to be around and praised by the people around him despite the spotlight not being on him in that given moment.Â
Reason 4: Heâs Not a Good Detective
While Saiharaâs role as a detective may fit the theme of Truth and Lies, that doesnât mean he was good at the job. My issue being that he was unproductive and biased for the role.
While he did set up that trap in Chapter 1 to catch the mastermind, he doesnât do anything as proactive in the later chapters. He spent most if not all of his time going to training with Kaito and moping about his problems. It goes on like this for 4 chapters and it takes Kiibo threatening to blow up the school before he actually gets to work on solving the mystery of the killing game. As a detective, youâd think he would put more effort into actually solving the mysteries of the killing game or try to put some thought on who the mastermind could be.
The biased part comes with how he interacts with others and how heâs more critical of people based on how they treat him. Saihar has a tendency to be very judgmental towards the students and doesnât look at the entire picture.Â
He writes off Ouma as the embodiment of lies and doesnât bother trying to learn more about him or his true motivations.Â
And on the opposite side, he openly praises his friends while blatantly ignoring the problematic things theyâd done throughout the story.Â
He considers Kaede to be an inspirational role model despite how she betrayed him and wanted to commit murder behind his back.
He worships Kaito and treats him as a perfect hero despite never noticing his ongoing illness or the fact that Kaito didnât trust his friends enough to reveal his own insecurities.
He deems Maki a reliable friend despite the fact that she went behind his and everyoneâs back in order to kill Ouma and was willing to gamble everyone elseâs lives if it meant taking revenge on the supreme leader.
Shouldnât a detective be more persistent when presented with a mystery while also acknowledging all the sides (both good and bad) of a given person? If his personal bias was treated as a flaw by the narrative, then that would actually give his character significant depth. Especially if he worked on managing his biases and learning to acknowledge all the sides. But it isnât treated as a bad problem.
For me, the fact that heâs supposed to be a detective who âgrows strongerâ and is so good at his job despite all of this really rubs me the wrong way. If anything, it shows me that heâs really bad at the job.
Also, I would like to bring up that I donât count him investigating the murder cases as being a good detective. Why? Because Hajime and his class in SDR2 were able to solve their class trials without a detective figure. Being a detective, or having one, doesnât make solving the class trials any easier.
Reason 5: An Unnecessary Cliche
Personally, I really see no reason for why Saiharaâs character needed to be the generic insecure protagonist for this particular installment of Danganronpa. Itâs the same cliche storyline featured in a grand majority of anime and light novels. Itâs repetitive and irritating knowing that so many stories focus primarily on a sad generic boy who doesnât feel good enough and wants to be stronger.Â
Itâs also worth mentioning that in comparison, the past protagonists at least had narrative reasons for why they were generic and insecure in the first place.
For Naegi, he was the first protagonist of the installment and his normalcy was meant to contrast the extremely talented and radically different students heâd be involved with. As the game progresses, he uses his normalness to bond with the students and rally them together in the name of hope.
For Hajime, heâs treated as a deconstruction of the generic insecure protagonist. Itâs because his feelings of inferiority and longing to be special that he decides to accept Hopeâs Peakâs experimentation and become Izuru Kamakura: an incredibly talented super-being who lost his humanity.
For Komaru, she was regarded as an ordinary girl that had the potential to lead others which is recognized by the adult resistance and Monaca. So throughout the game, both sides were pushing her into becoming either the next symbol of Hope like Naegi or next symbol of despair like Junko. But she ultimately decides to be neither of them and wants to be her own person.
There were reasons for why each of these protagonists were considered generic and insecure as it contributed to the narratives. But for Saihara, thereâs really no solid reason for why heâs the only normal one of the V3 cast. And everyone is more than happy to praise him as the best one out of the cast despite doing so little to earn it. At most, Tsumugi reveals that Saihara being an insecure boy who grew stronger thanks to his friends was for the sake of a fictional storyline. Obviously it was meant to mentally break him but it honestly feels like a weak reason to keep the trend of a generic insecure sad boy. Not to mention there are other reasons for why I believe this doesnât work.
The setup for the âDanganronpa is a fictional TV showâ twist didnât have enough buildup so it doesnât make the cliche that strong.
Saihara still continues the role of the insecure boy who grows strong and saves the day. While Tsumugi states that his role was written for him, Saihara still continues the tropes of his archetype by saving the day. Itâs ultimately because of him that heâs able to convince his friends and the viewing audience to give up on Danganronpa. It was the writerâs way of having their cake and eating it.
If the reveal was meant to be a shot at how itâs become a cliche, then why not live up to it? If they wanted to show how Danganronpa was running for too long or how itâs cliches were getting old, then why not commit to those ideas? Instead of having everyone praise and worship Saihara, make them question if theyâre really going to depend on a generic guy to save them. Instead of being just a cute quirk, actually show the negative sides of Saiharaâs anxiety and depression and how they would hinder him from participating in trial discussions. Maybe even have Kaito lose his temper at Saihara because of how much he mopes around.
Thereâs so many ways they could have gone with deconstructing Saiharaâs stereotype or showcasing how itâs become old and stale. So it feels disappointing that they never went that far.
And another reason for why I dislike his characterization is because it brings to mind Ryota Mitarai from the DR3 anime. Just like Saihara, Mitarai is a main character whoâs described as generic, insecure and spends most of his time whining about how useless he is. Despite this, he manages to survive the killing game since the other more unique characters are killed or move the events of the story. I personally found Mitarai to be a frustrating character. I detest characters who constantly whine about how useless or miserable they are as a means of getting sympathy from the audience. So having to deal with Saihara who more or less shares multiple characteristics with Mitarai felt very exhausting.
Conclusion
So those would be my reasons for why I hate/strongly dislike Saihara. I can admit that alot of these reasons werenât so much because of Saihara or his actions but how he was written throughout the story. He still did alot of things I didnât like donât get me wrong, but alot of fault can be traced to the writers and how they decided to write him and Kaedeâs characters. I still find his archetype as a generic insecure boy who mopes around to be an unappealing archetype but Iâm sure most of his fans would suggest otherwise.
If youâve managed to read everything here, Iâd like to thank you for taking the time to do so. I canât imagine many people would want to read a critical post targeted towards one of the most beloved characters in Danganronpa. So thank you for doing so.
And as always, if you agree or disagree with anything Iâve written, youâre more than welcome to reblog this with your comments. Iâm always up for friendly discussions.Â

Emptiness. Thatâs all there was. A shadow lay across Samâs world, only briefly lit by fire. Then smoke descended again. He didnât know how long it had been since his brother had died yet he knew, some how it had be 6 weeks 5 hours and 43 minutes since the world come undone around him. The silence wasnât the worst part, the wrong noises were. The humming of off key metallic riffs and whispered curses still lingered in the empty bunker.
Walking the halls turned out to be the newest way to pass the time, a new game if that was what it could be called. Walk as far as possible, to fall on the floor, unable to bare the weight of a world, without his brother in it.
It took him weeks to be able to go in to his room again, but the smell of old beer was almost as bad as the blood he could never quite wash off his hands. So walk in he did heart in his stomach, and a miracle at his side. He walked. Because he had too. So when he found a box under his brothers bed, Sammy written across it in the block letters of a child. He was taken aback. The lock on the front was old yet it had been recently unlocked by the lack of dust surrounding the key hole.
Searching around the room led to nothing but old pornos, and half stale pizza slices. Until he looked up from grasping underneath the bed, at a confused looking mutt, with an oddly shaped tag dangling from its collar.
Sitting up, and festering for the dog to come closer, he carefully pulled the collar over miracles head. Attached was a generic dog tag, and a single key. âAlways loved your mysteriesâ a choked sob came out of his mouth, muffled slightly by a hurriedly rubbing at his eyes.
Leaning against the end of the bed, he inspected the lock and key. A perfect match. Fitting the key in he turned, pausing only to shift in to a more comfortable position. The inside was filled with papers, nicknacks and assorted bullet casings. One letter sat on top of the rest, that seemed to be the most resent. It was signed to him in deans haphazard script and sealed with red wax. Opening the seal reveled a letter dated a few days before his brothers death. A last gift perhaps. - - - Hey Sammy you and I both know Iâm shit at saying my words out loud, and heaven forbid I actually admit to like or care about something. But the thing is Sammy I do care about three things in this world. You, my baby, and Cas. But it will always be you first, thats why I made this box Sammy, its for you my last gift to you. If iâm dead. And we both know id never let you read this if I was alive, I want you to know a few things.
First: Im waiting for you Sammy no matter where I am, Iâm waiting for you. Cause your my stupid ass little brother and Iâll always need you. I cant be happy anywhere with out you in it.
Second: Take care of yourself, I know you. You learned one of my worst character flaws âeverything is my faultâ Its not Sammy I donât care how I went it would never be your fault. Find Eileen stop hunting for a bit and just live. Just live Sammy. Be a human and get stuck in grocery lines for insane amounts of time or drive your kid to school. Just donât name him John and your all good.
Third: cut your hair you look like a damn Sasquatch.
I don't know if I will have the time to write any more letters. And Iâve rewritten this letter so many times. So since this is the last one I wrote before my death then hereâs whatâs just happened. Cas is gone. The empty came for him. Bobby, Charlie and even the damn miracle dog, their all gone. As I sit here writing to you Lucifer and Michel are having th staring contest to end all staring contests. Because I might be too busy trying to save the world again, from God.
So, if this does end up being the last letter, I just want you to know that I was in a bad place before I started hunting with you. And you helped me. You helped me Sammy, weâve lost so much since I walked in your door all those years ago. Even if you didn't know what I was talking about. You in your weird striped pant thingy, and a girlfriend. Being with you made me not feel alone.
Because I know there are people who will say our lives didnât happen, tell those sons of bitches how awesome I was. And there are people who will forget what itâs like to be normal when they get dragged along on the journey of being a hunter. I know our lives will be stories someday. And our pictures will become old photographs.
And youâll be somebody's dad, because I canât imagine a time where I die without saving you. But right now, these moments are not stories. These are our lives, our crazy demon, angel, monster filled lives. This is happening. Weâre here. And as I look at this world so beautiful. And so broken. But it was Home. It was our Home. You, me, jack and that wonderful angel, following each other from heaven to hell, and everywhere and everything in-between.
And in this moment, standing against God himself, with little to no chance to survive but sheer dumb Winchester logic and luck. I would swear on my own soul.
We are infinite.
So get up off your ass, weâll see each other again. Death hasnât ever been able to keep us apart, even if thereâs a new reaper I doubt that will change. But donât worry Iâve got my hand full waiting for you. And I for one cant wait to see Kevin, and Charlieâs faces.
And besides Iâve got an Angel to run after.
Love your brother, Dean
- - -
After The tears slowed down long enough to read the letter once, he read it again. And again. Until the words could be read when he closed his eyes. Picking himself up, and off the floor, he walked towards the door, pulling on one of deans larger jackets on. Making his way slowly through the bunker, the dog at his heels, a silent companion.
Packing himself in to the drivers seat of the impala. He drove. Past hills and mountains, through valleys and towns. The same old mixtapes playing on repeat. And so the stories rose up. The tale of a man, searching for a woman. Who would stop at nothing to find her.
Hunters gathered around fires, in kitchens, and anywhere more than three could sit long enough to hear the tale of the Winchester brothers. The boys not even death could separate. The avenging angel, who would always come when called. And if you were lucky enough to find someone who knew them you could count yourself lucky, as not many that did lived to tell their tale.
It took time. Several thousand contacts. And mile after mile of the same road. But find her, he did. In an old run down dinner outside Chesapeake she waited. Together, tears shed for the ones lost along the way, old pains were dulled and almost forgotten. Except green eyes. Those would forever remain. Burned like a hand print in Sam's mind.
They settled down, and for once Sam got to be on the other end of the job. Instead of protecting people with guns and swords. He protected people with warm hugs and tender words. This life came almost easily to him. The routine distracting him from the ghost of almost forgotten smiles.
When his time came there was no fuss. Just a hand holding his. Dean. His sun, his son. The light that had been extinguished by the passing of his brother had come roaring back with a passion with the birth of his son.
His son.
Those simple words brought him so much joy. But sam knew. He could feel it. The end was here, and he wondered what might have happened if he had given up on that empty bedroom floor.
âYou can go Dad its okâ

~
Ever wondered, what happens to a man when he hears his wife died of natural causes, but when the information was being told to him, it didnât seem natural. Not to him. After Crowley killed Sarah with a hex bag, suffocating her to death. Sam wanted to break the news to her husband Ian, with their daughter, who was turning 6 at the time that their mother was dead. Sam couldnât bring himself to tell Ian a snot nosed lie. But he couldnât tell the truth either.
Ian turned into a hunter, shortly after the news of Sarah. He wanted revenge. Avenge his wifeâs death. But, having little to no knowledge under his belt. A werewolf was all it took to end his, short, hunting days. Beth was 13 when her father died.
-
Growing up in the south with a half black and half white mother can lead to bullying. But not for Kaylee. She had her dadâs blood in her veins and Cassie knew it.
Yet another call from the school about a fight she was yet again involved in, proved to her she was Deanâs daughter. Sure she did the DNA testing, months after he left to go hunting with Sam after saving her family from a racist ghost truck, she had something of his. A stray hair was all it took to confirm she was Deanâs daughter.
She had to tell her about her dad. She always asked when she was a kid about her daddy. So she decided to tell her about her dad. Dean Winchester. A hunter, who hunts monsters. She was 14 when she learned this.
-
Three years laterâŠ
The girls are not of age yet. But armed with pictures, one of her dad, and one of her mom. All it took was a topic about monsters and the supernatural to bring the two girls together.
Kaylee, now 17 years old, sheâs on her way to turning 18, rents a room out for them. To chat in a more controlled environment.
âSo, youâre looking for your dad?â Beth asked.
âYeah. My dad,â she began. And shrugged. âMy mom says he hunts monsters. Supernatural monsters, ghosts, demons that whole rep.â she said.
âMy dad is looking forâwell was looking for, a man by the name Sam Winchester. He told my dad about my momâs death. He might help me about my dadâs.â she explained.
âHuh, my dadâs name is Dean Winchester. Maybe weâll both get what we want if we stick together.â Kaylee suggests.
âYeah. I agree.â Beth says.
-
The girls got up bright an early the next day, checked out and left. Kaylee having to hotwire and steal a car. A parked, police car, a 2019 Dodge Charger, solid black with police lights on top.
âWe are so going to jail.â Beth groaned.
âShut up, I know what Iâm doing kid.â Kaylee said as she quietly pulled out of the parking lot unnoticed.
Pulling into an abandoned garage several miles away.
Thought it may look abandoned, but Kaylee is familiar with the area. Her ex-boyfriend dabbled in cars. Taught her how to fix them up, hotwire, steal even turn a cop car into a nonpolice car. This also happened to be her ex-boyfriends garage.
She managed, with the tools he had lying around, to get under the hood and gank the gps tracker attached to the engine. She even managed to unhook the dashcam and, ditched the plates, lights and siren. Destroying the important stuff. Like the trackers and cameras so no one would find them, hack into it and manage to get any kind of information from the trackers and cameras.
It was starting to get late in the day, night was soon approaching.
âWeâre staying here for the night. I need to work on the car more.â Kaylee says.
âWhere are we gonna sleep?â Beth asks.
âOver there, the mechanic always has a place to crash while working.â She says, pointing to a spare room in the garage.
Beth finds a small bed, all made up with some covers, dusty and old. She shook the sheets and blankets out and remade the bed. And got ready to go to sleep while Kaylee striped the paint and painted the car black and trimmed with chrome. Making it look spick and span, and brand spanking new by morning. No sign it was ever a police car.
The next morning, Kaylee managed to get done with the car in time. Beth got up, made the bed and got ready to go when Kaylee stops her.
âDo you have a license?â Kaylee asked tiredly.
âYeah, why?â Beth asked.
âYouâre driving.â Kaylee tossed her the keys.
âWe broke how many laws in one day? And you ask me if I have a driverâs license.â Beth says with a bitchface to boot.
âShut up.â Kaylee says, getting in the passenger seat.
âYouâll be fine, I put different plates on the car, got new tags. The car is now ours.â Kaylee says, getting settled in.
âAnd howâd you manage that?â Beth asks as she pulls out.
âBreaking the law.â Kaylee says. Pulling her beanie over her eyes, and falling asleep.
-
Weeks have passed, driving from town to town, asking people if theyâve seen the man Kaylee is looking for, or anything about him.
âKaylee, weâre here.â Beth said pulling up to a house in Sioux Falls.
After a stop in Minnesota Sheriff Donna helped out a lot.
âI swear if this is another one of my dadâs friends Iâm offing myself.â Kaylee groans.
âSo what if Donna didnât know Dean had a kid, I thought it was funny.â Beth said with a laugh.
Kayla mocking a laugh with Beth. Clearly not amused.
They knock on the door.
âYes.â A voice answers from inside.
It was summer, this house was like one of many having two doors, the main door and a screen door. And just like any house after the long winter months, and having a day where itâs beautiful outside, the screen door is open letting in the fresh air.
âHi, are you Jody Mills?â Kaylee asked.
A middle-aged woman with pixie short hair appeared, coming to the door but not opening it.
âDepends on whoâs asking?â She answers.
âMaâam, my name is Kaylee Robinson, my mom knew a Mr. Dean Winchester, Iâm looking for him.â Kaylee said.
âAnd how well did your mom know Dean?â She asked.
âSo you are Jody?â Beth goes.
âNo shit.â Kaylee groans at Beth.
Kaylee sighs. âHeâs my dad.â She says.
Jody tried to hide the shock that filled her face, she too didnât know Dean had a kid.
âHe saw my mom again around January 2006, I was born September 26, 2006. And this girl, Beth, had a run in with the supernatural. We just want to find Dean and this, Sam character. Maybe they can help us.â Kaylee says.
âHelp you with what?â Jody asks seriously.
âI wanna know who killed my dad and why.â Beth says.
âAnd my mom, died in a car accidentâŠbut it didnât seem like an accident. It looked an awful lot like a case my dad solved when he was with my mom last.â Kaylee explained.
âCome in, you should know about this.â Jody says.
-
After a good long talk of the boysâ adventuresâŠ
âGod?â Kaylee goes.
Jody nods. After telling them about the Winchesterâs, demons, angels, and Jack and Cas and their bought with God Chuck.
âThey died, protecting this new god?â Beth asked.
âYeah, they couldnât get away and well the power of Jack and Chuck overwhelmed them. Killing them instantly. They felt no pain.â Jody explained.
âSo my dadâs dead too.â Kaylee goes, standing up.
âIâm sorry kid, I really am. Look, I wish there was a way.â Jody starts.
âWhat if there is?â Kaylee says.
âWhat?â Jody asks.
Beth remaining silent.
âYou said before, they died and came back many times. What if, there is a way to get them back?â Kaylee asks.
âSweetheart, they wouldnât want that.â Jody says.
âHow would you know?â Kaylee snaps.
âLebanon, thatâs where their base is right, Iâm heading there.â Kaylee says, leaving.
âBut, Kaylee, you and I know nothing about bringing the dead back to life.â Beth says after her.
âDad and Sam figured it out, right?â she asked. âWell, Iâm a Winchester too. Believe it or not. Iâm sure I will figure out how to bring my dad and uncle back.â Kaylee says getting in the driver seat.
Jody couldnât get out fast enough. By the time she gets to her truck they're gone. All she could do was to put out an APB on the car. As the days pass, no one sees the car or the girls.
-
A few days laterâŠ
They pull up a trail, seeing a tall building looming over head.
âApparently hunters here knew Dean and Sam. Thatâs a good thing, right?â Beth asked.
âWell yeah, we would have been looking all over for this placeâŠâ Kaylee says. âNot that we would be looking to long. Lebanon isnât very big.â Kaylee adds.
The door down remained unlock. As they walked in through the second door, a dark and musty room awaited them. They pulled out their cellphones, activating the flashlight.
âWhoa.â Beth goes.
âSon of a bitch.â Kaylee says.
âThis place is huge, and your dad lived here?â Beth says.
âApparently.â Kaylee says.
Kaylee looks around and sees the main power switches. She heads over and throws both of them, one at a time.
âSon of a bitch.â Beth says. Her gaze, off into the far distance.
Kaylee follows Bethâs gaze, seeing a huge library.
âHey girl, I think we found the batcave.â Kaylee says.
âWell, letâs get to looking on how to bring your dad back.â Beth says.
-
The next morningâŠ
âKaylee, this place has everything, spell books, lore books, hell even a Manuel on being a hunter.â Beth says holding up the books.
âAlright, letâs not geek out okay.â Kaylee says.
âGeek out, really?â Beth goes.
âWell, donât get me wrong, it all sounds awesome. But, I just wish it was an easy, âhey this book is on resurrecting the deadâ.â Kaylee says, playing with the swords behind Beth.
âYeah, well, we donât have that. We have to do it the old fashioned way.â Beth says.
After a couple of hours of reading and scrounging, Beth found a lead.
âThereâs a spell. All I need is blood, blood related to your dad and uncle. And since you have some Winchester blood in you, and Dean and Sam, you are related to them so, I need your blood.â Beth says, holding up the spell.
âBut we got everything else. Sage, and something that belonged to themâŠâ Kaylee says skeptically. As she looked at the pile Beth had, ingredients for the spell. Two flannels, a stick of sage and a bowl.
âYour dadâs stuff was still here so I figured his flannel would do.â Beth said.
âDoes it have to be the whole damn shirt, just, here.â Kaylee says.
Grabbing a pair of scissors she cuts a piece from the collar.
âLook, thereâs even hair. And weâll do it on Samâs too.â Kaylee says, doing the same to his flannel.
âBut problem.â Beth says.
âWhat?â Kaylee groans.
âWhere are they buried?â Beth asks.
Oh.
Kaylee looked all over the bunker, for a clue to where they would be buried. And found nothing. But one clue that seemed odd.
âJack, the same Jack told us is the new God. He used to live here.â Kaylee says, entering the library holding a journal.
âYeah, same for Cas too. Did you know celestial beings donât sleep?â Beth says.
âKind of figured. But this journal, has my dadâs name in it. And another Winchester, John. Sounds like he was my dadâs dad.â Kaylee says.
âYeah, thatâs called a grandpa.â Beth says jokingly.
âWhatâs with the snarky comments?â Kaylee snapped.
âIâm bored.â Beth says.
âI wonder if praying works.â Kaylee says.
âTry it out.â Beth says.
âOkay.â Kaylee goes, sitting down, folding her hands and begins to pray.
âAlright, I have questions that need answering. And only this Cas and Jack can answer them. Can someone up there send their feathery assâs down here, please and thank you.â She says.
âReally? Thatâs a prayer?â Beth says sassily.
âI donât go to church.â Kaylee says.
âHelloâ a voice is heard behind them. They turn to see a scrawny kid.
âAnd you are?â Kaylee asks.
âJack.â He says.
âJack, the same Jack that worked with my dad?â Kaylee asked.
âI am. And, before you ask, I have made a promise not to bring them back. Under any and all circumstance.â He says quickly.
âBut Jack itâs important. We need answers.â Kaylee says.
âIâm sorry, but as far as Iâm concerned, this place has all the answers you need. I canât help you.â He says and vanishes.
âWell, son of a bitch.â Kaylee growls.
âNow what?â Beth asked.
âWeâll find a way; we donât need no god to help us.â Kaylee says.
-
Remember Nick, Luciferâs first original vessel? We were never shown what happened to his body, or his spirit since Godâs destruction. And his many attempts to bring Lucifer back from the Empty. Letâs just say being a vengeful spirit has itâs perks. Going between worlds, even dipping into the Empty and waking up Lucifer.
The Empty Lucifer, and the spirit of Nick, resurrected Nickâs corpse.
After slipping past Death, getting Empty Lucifer out of the Empty and into the real world Nick and Lucifer were back in action. And more powerful than ever.
Winchester. He wanted the Winchesterâs dead.
-
As the girls slept in the bunker, Kaylee couldnât sleep. Her thoughts racing. Until she heard her friend screaming.
âBeth!â Kaylee shouted. Following Bethâs screams.
She found Beth, standing at a crossroads of hallways. She follows Bethâs gaze to find a man standing at the end of the hall. A dark gaze in his eye. Flashing red, a deep red.
Her mind screaming somehow. Lucifer.
Lucifer?
âLucifer.â Kaylee whispers.
âWhat? Howâd you know?â Beth asks.
âI donât know, I just do somehow.â Kaylee says.
Lucifer vanished in a puff of black smoke.
And it happened again behind them. Turning to see Lucifer looming over them, he throws the girls down the hall. Causing them to roll to a stop.
âSomethingâs off about him.â Kaylee says. Getting up.
âHow so? Wait? How would know something is off about him?â Beth shouts further down the hall from Kaylee. âYou donât even know him!â
âI donât know okay!â Kaylee admits.
The girls notice their breath is showing.
âDidnât your dad write something about ghosts showing themselves, the temperature would drop?â Beth asked.
A thought came to Kaylee, and she acted on it.
âDad, is that you?â Kaylee asks.
A figure appeared behind her.
âSam!â He shouted. Another figure showed up, behind Lucifer.
Lucifer stopped. Seeing Sam and Dean appearing before him.
âDean!â Sam shouted.
Dean? Dean! Dad! Kaylee thought.
Sam used his ghost mojo to hold Lucifer in place.
âKay, listen to me.â Dean says. Kaylee turns towards him.
âThereâs a book, itâs a banishing spell. Try it.â He says.
âBut, dad he doesnât feel celestial in any way. I donât think heâs an angel.â She says.
âI think Deanâs ghostly influence or whatever is giving you this knowledge.â Beth suggests.
âThere should be an angel blade in my room, run and get it.â Dean ordered.
Before she could, Lucifer sent her flying further down the hall. Dean vanishes for a minute, and appears by Kayleeâs side.
âYou okay?â He asked.
âYeah, at least Iâm not hitting a wall or anything.â Kaylee answers. âAn angel blade, whatâs an angel blade?â Kaylee asked. Dean vanishes. Only to hear a metallic blade slide out of his room.
She hurries to it, sliding to a stop and grabbing it. And she high tails it towards Lucifer. Who launches her through a closed door, Kaylee grunts in pain at the force of it all.
âSorry kids, but, gotta run.â Lucifer growls. Vanishing, this time for good, in a puff of black smoke.
âYouâre right, not an angel.â Dean says.
âCan you come back now?!â Kaylee asks, stumbling out of the room Lucifer just threw her in. Angel Blade in hand. âJack said he wasnât gonna bring you back because of some promise. Beth and I Â know nothing about hunting, we need you guys.â Kaylee begs.
âThat spell Beth dug up, it will work. Just head up to the grave site. Itâs the top of this hill up here.â Dean says.
âWe canât follow you up their unless you bring something that ties us to this plane.â He adds.
âBeth, my laptop. I'm tied to my laptop.â Sam says.
Beth runs into Samâs room and grabs his laptop. Giving her a nod.
âMine, oddly enough, is not in here. And after all this time I donât know if sheâll run.â Dean says.
âWhat?â Kaylee asks.
-
Dean shows her his car. The black, 1967 Chevy Impala.
âI loved this car more than anything. She was my baby.â Dean says.
âOkay, can I drive her up there?â She asks.
âIf you can get her to start, yeah.â Dean says.
She heads into Deanâs room, finding his keys and is back in no time. The boys fizzle in and out of view, one minute they're not in the car, the next minute theyâre in the back seat behind the girls.
She turns the key, sounds like the battery is dead. And judging by the way her dad's car is parked, she can get her Dodge down here and give the Impala a jumpstart.
And thatâs what she does. She manages to drive it in the garage, parking it so she can get out in the Impala but also jumpstart the old muscle car.
And a jumpstart was all it needed. Beth turns off the Dodge and gets in the Impala and the pair drive up the hill to the grave site they speak of.
-
It was almost dawn when they reached the hilltop. Finding three graves.
Beth heading over to said graves getting bowl ready, Sam helping her as best as he could.
Kaylee and Dean having a, ghostly, father, daughter bonding moment.
âCas. Who was Cas?â Kaylee asked.
âHe was, an angel friend of ours. A brother in arms. He died trying to save us but, obviously it wasnât enough.â Dean says dryly.
âDid you ever loved my mom?â She asked.
âOf course I did, thatâs why I left.â Dean answers. Almost offended by the question. âYou know what I do--, what I did. I didnât want that for your mom. Or you.â He said.
âWell, she died in a car accident, but in my momâs old journal entry, how people were dying the same way she did.â Kaylee explained.
âI thought, having it cross hollowed grounds it would destroy it Sam.â Dean says, glaring at Sam.
âGuess I was wrong.â Sam says.
âWhen did this happen?â Dean asked.
âIt wasâŠaround, early October 2019.â She answers.
âThatâs when God opened up hell, probably even brought him back for kicks.â Dean said.
âAnd this is Chuck, not Jack, right?â She asks.
âRight, Chuck was just, all out bad.â Dean answers.
âOkay, Kaylee, Iâm ready for the blood.â Beth says.
She turns back to Dean. Dean gives her a nod and a soft, sad smile.
Kaylee heads over to Bethâs spell making bowl and cuts her hand, squeezing a good amount of blood. And Beth saying the incantation.
âBout a short time later two hands, one from either grave shot up. The girls scream at the scene, backing off some.
First popped out Sam, gasping for breath. Shortly after, Dean popped out doing the same. Both looking like nothing happened, other than being buried. No injuries, no blood, just unharmed and fine.
âWell,â Dean says with a huff.
âLooks like we got more work to do.â Sam says, panting.

well, I... John Uskglass?!!??!?
Well, if you insistâŠ.xD
How I feel about this character
I meanâŠ.*sweeping gesture towards blog* I suppose you could say have something of an appreciation for him?
xD Nah, But seriously, from the very moment he appeared on that snowy Yorkshire moor in front of Childermass, Iâve loved this guy. Forget the scene, he stole the whole book! I love the mystery that surrounds him, how much of an enigma he is; I love that he is this incredible force of nature, this legend, this being that seems so Fae at times and so inscrutable. I love how absolutely extra he is? This inclination for melodrama developed over years of growing up in Faerie: Why just walk into a room when you can materialize out of a chaos of ravens? Why simply refuse to learn to read when you can create your own writing system, one that more easily aligns to your own way of thinking? Why take your vengeance for your parents deaths out on the one guy who did it, when you can conquer half an island? The man has two modes: âCool Arroganceâ and âSinking Coastal Yorkshire Villages Into The Seaâ and I kinda love it? (though, just to make things clear, I donât actually approve of the drowning of Coastal Yorkshire Villages, no matter what allies theyâve made in their quest not to pay their taxes. In case it needs to be said)
Most of all, I love how incredibly human The Raven King can be as well. Thereâs compassion â offhanded, a second thought, of course, yet still thereâ  in the way he heals Childermass before he vanishes again. Thereâs humor in his parting words to Childermass, âYou are wrong, he is not deadâ â a dry, ironical sort of understatement, that the man canât even hear, you can nearly picture the smirk curling at his lips as he says it! And thereâs care in all that he does. He set in motion a plan three centuries in the making, manipulating who knows how many events, all for the sake of England, for his Kingdom, to bring magic back. John Uskglass is a teacher, he gave magic to England and it spread through his own students. John Uskglass is an explorer, building the Kingâs roads and traveling to countless realms in search of more Knowledge, more Magic. Yes, of course all of these traits are twisted and filtered through a more Fairy lens, why wouldnât they be? He was raised by these beings! Heâs not fully human â but heâs not entirely Fae either. Heâs this strange mixture of both that neither can really understand. Itâs isolating, itâs lonely, and itâs fascinating. I justâŠlove the Raven King when heâs shown as a person?
And I justâŠlove how heâs presented in the book? We donât see him until that scene at the end, but by that point in the book, youâve heard so many legends and stories and Historical anecdotes about him that you justâŠfeel his presence over the whole story? By that point, you know about his conquest of Northern England, and of his youthful Arrogance, refusing even to learn how to read, because what could he possibly gain from doing so? Youâve heard about how he gradually became less arrogant, less like a Fairy and More like a Man after ruling his Kingdom for so long and how he did eventually learn to read â how he decided that engaging with the thoughts of others was worthwhile after all! You hear about his Strange Fae nature in the Raven King Ballad, how heâll spirit away unsuspecting people to his realm in Fairy. Youâve read about his cruelty: the incident with Henry Barbatus, the Yorkshire Village he sank into the sea. Youâve heard rumor of his multiple returns to England: Riding off of a Fairy Road and blessing the family of the Farmer at the end of it who gave him food and a horse; Guiding back home the daughter of a Newcastle Glovemaker who had wandered her way into Faerie; As an omen of ill fortune for a group of shipwrecked basque sailors. You even know the names of those close to him: Thomas of Dundale, William of Lanchester, Catherine of Winchester.
But in the end, how much do you really know at all? Do you know if any of these tales are true? If they are then they only open more questions. What are the other sides of these tales? Who were those others with the King when he departed from the Fairy Road, the one who vanished along with it with the morning mist, who the Raven King so blithly told the Farmer not to worry about? How did the Glovemakerâs daughter find her way inside the Raven Kingâs house? Did she just stumble upon it or did he bring her there? And why?
Itâs fantastic.  You get all of these glimpses of the character, and you canât help but build an image from them in your mind. But itâs never a complete image. Never full, you can never really understand the Raven King any more than any of the characters in the book can.
(So um yeahâŠapparently I have *alot* of feelings about the Raven King. xD)Â
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Alright so my main ship for this guy is actually John Uskglass/England, take that in whichever way your imagination is inclined, because yes I probably mean it that way. Honestly, when you see how Happy all of Nature is when it thinks Stephen is the Raven King and that John Uskglass is returned? Itâs just really cute?! How can you not?!
On a more Human level, as Iâve said before, I do actually picture John Uskglass as being pansexual, and as per his fairy upbringing, rather more casual about his sexual relationships. That saidâŠ.I actually have very few shipsâŠwith likeâŠnamed characters, for Uskers? Maybe itâs because I do see his affairs as so casual most of the time, or maybe itâs just because heâs so isolated a character. I dunno. Black Joan is the one character thatâs a definate yes. If sheâs anything like her son, sheâd be shrewd and cynical and the sort of person who can hold her own against the Raven King. I have to admit I definitely love that sort of fairy-tale like trope of this Great and Powerful King, and this relatively ordinary thief falling for one another as well. So yeah, definately here for Black Joan/John Uskglass. Otherwise? Hrmm⊠I need more Raven King Ships. Any one got any suggestions?
I will say that when John does fall in love, he falls hard. He doesnât like it. Itâs such a soft, vulnerable feeling, and placing your heart into someone elseâs hands, to be broken at any moment? Itâs foolish, so far as heâs concerned. He is a King in Faerie, after all, he cannot afford to be vulnerable. So he tries to deny any feelings he may develop for a person, even to himself. If you do get him to the point of admitting it though, I will say he can be absolutely doting.Â
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Okay, so Iâve talked about this before, but I do headcanon Thomas of Dundale and John Uskglass as having grown up in the brugh together, pretty much. Thomas âlike the naturally born extrovert that he is ;) â kind of attached himself to John and over the years became something like an older brother to him? I canât help but picture him as being very protective of the young Raven King, and, having been taken at an age where he could remember things, where he had developed a more human sense of right and wrong, Thomas helped provide something of a balancing point against the Fairies as John was growing up. Thomas encouraged those more human aspects of Johnâs character, and he was there to talk to about these aspects of himself, these more human instincts, that John might not have understood so well growing up surrounded by Fairies â empathy, compassion, caring. And that bridge that Thomas provided was so important later in Johnâs life, after he returned to England. It wasnât merely language that Thomas was translating, but culture, an entire way of thinking that John didnât fully understand yet. I mean?! Their relationship is just so important to me and how can I not love them?!
And yet, on the other handâŠThereâs also William of Lanchester? I mean, heâs specifically marked out as The Raven Kingâs Favorite and Most Trusted servant, and I canât help but picture this guy as the most Eternally Tired man in all of Northern England. xD William is the sensible, trustworthy, reliable one and thatâs such a beautiful contrast to John Uskglass? Part of me loves the idea that a big part of why John trusts William so much is because William will say âNoâ to him. He wonât flatter or stay quiet if he feels he needs to speak against John (see: Henry Barbatus). Does that mean John will always listen? That heâll always appreciate Williamâs input? No, of course not (also see: Henry Barbatus) But he will get the truth, and that is important too.
And again, on the third hand, I really do love the whole relationship between Catherine of Winchester and John Uskglass as well. I love the idea of the Raven King as a teacher, and Catherine herself is just really awesome? And the idea of even John Uskglass being impressed at her dedication to magic, of how much he finds himself valuing her as a pupil, and growing to care about her over the coarse of their relationship, justâŠas a person? I feel like John Uskglass does most easily connect to other people through magic and through teaching, and I like to think that Catherine was one of his favoritesâŠ
Ughh. I canât choose. Letâs go with all four of them hanging out in 13th century Newcastle. Yes? Yes. Good! 8DÂ
My unpopular opinion about this character
Iâm not sure. I donâtâŠthink I have any unpopular opinions? What are the popular ones? Are we all in agreement that the Raven King is a Melodramatic Goth Nerd and That is Why We Love him?
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
I want justâŠmore in general? I mean, like more, like a whole series of historical novels focusing on the intrigues and plots surrounding the Raven Kingâs court. I want to see him interacting with all of these historical personages, reacting to like historical events happening, how magic and his presence changes that past? It would be *amazing* and I want it so badly!
âŠso Iâm prolly gonna have to write it myself xD
#Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell#JSMN#John Uskglass#jordenspuls#welp this ended up longer than I thought#any excuse to ramble about the Raven King ;D#seriously talk to me about this nerd

Cinderella of Chicago       Chapter 1: The Ball
His outfit was sheer genius. The wings could actually lift and wave, and fold back to their resting position smoothly and silently. Â They worked on servos heâd spent way too much for, but it was worth it. Â You couldnât even see him toggle the switch that controlled them, because it fit perfectly within his palm. Â Brilliant.
Not only that, but the workmanship on the suit itself was perfect. Â His Baba had asked no questions, just taken the pictures heâd given her, drawn up a pattern, and sewed holy hell out of it. Â It fit like a glove and made him look pretty damn good, if he did say so himself. Â Heâd had to make a few concessions here and there on fabric and trim, mostly because the real suit was undoubtedly butter-soft leather that cost about a million dollars a yard, but heâd done superbly there, too. Â Well worth the number of days off heâd spent haunting every fabric store in greater Chicago. Â
Which is why Brian Zvonecek could not be blamed for maniacally bouncing his foot and checking the clock every seven seconds as he sat ignoring the morning talk show on the common room TV, waiting for this shift at Firehouse 51 to end. Â When ChicagoCon started in approximately three hours, he planned to be there, and he planned to be the best Sumendi anyone had ever seen. Including, hopefully, Anthony Lang, the guy who actually played Sumendi in all three movies, and was going to be on a panel talking about the upcoming movie that would have all the Planetary Saviors in it. Â Brian couldnât wait. Â
************
At this stage of her nursing career, not much bothered Meg Armstrong, but this was a bunch of shit. Â Literally, the largest amount of feces sheâd ever seen, which had issued from a homeless woman who had come in to Chicago Medâs Emergency Room after not being able to âgo boom-boomâ (her phrase) for a week. Â Well, theyâd solved that problem. Â And now, here was Meg, four years of college and fifty thousand dollars in student loans later, dealing with the aftermath of their success. Â Â
At least her shift was almost over. Â The minute she had Mrs. Carlsberg cleaned out and cleaned up, she could, at long last, catch the El to her friend Karenâs apartment where the girls were meeting to get ready for ChicagoCon. Â After all the planning and all the work to make it, Meg was dying to put on all the pieces of her Tabiti costume and hit Rosemont. Â
 ************
The hall was huge. Actually, if Brian was being honest with himself, it was a little overwhelming. Â Half of Chicago was here, and a good third of them were in costume. Â Heâd get used to the crowd, and the more people in costume the better, because he knew he looked good. Â Heâd already lost count of the number of people whoâd asked for permission to take his picture, or to be in selfies with him. Â He graciously agreed every time, while his roommate Joe Cruz rolled his eyes and made annoyed faces. Â Well, Cruz could be getting this kind of attention if heâd chosen to dress up, but heâd absolutely refused. Â So there he was, wearing a T-shirt and jeans and absolutely invisible next to Brian.
âCâmon, Otis, weâre not gonna get a good place in line for the panel.â
Brian accepted yet another high five on his costume and joined Cruz for the short walk to join the throng in front of the doors to the main auditorium. Â The panel wasnât for another hour at least, but if they didnât get in line now, theyâd have lousy seats. Â Brian wanted to be sure to get great pictures and â although he didnât admit it to Cruz â he hoped someone on the panel would notice that he was looking crazy good as Sumendi. Â
For the next hour, Brian and Cruz stood cheek by jowl with an odiferous mass of Planetary Saviors fans, many in costume. Â There were a fair number of Sumendis, but none that could approach Brianâs costume, even without the real, working wings. Â Unfortunately, there werenât many women in the vicinity of Brian and Cruz to make the wait more enjoyable. Â There were a few mediocre Tabitis and one group of all the female Planetary Saviors, but they were all too young to be interesting. Â
Being taller, Cruz could see further into the crowd. Â He mentioned a few particularly cool costumes, but Brian couldnât see them. Â It would be easier to check out the costumes when they were released from the horde into the auditorium. Â For now, he was stuck among a mostly-male group of younger fans, all of whom smelled like they needed either a shower or a lesson in moderation when applying Axe body spray. Â He wished he was wearing his SCBA apparatus. Â It wouldâve ruined the look of his costume, of course, but no one could really see it in this crush, anyway. Â
At last, the doors opened and Brian and Cruz were propelled into the auditorium by a suddenly frenzied mob, having all they could do to keep upright. Â But they had a plan. Â Cruz was pretty big, and could use his arms and elbows to basically swim through the crowd. All Brian had to do was stay tucked right behind him, and Cruz would get them to the front. Â Which he did with a minimum amount of elbowing teenagers and a very clever âaccidentalâ de-helmeting of a Boba Fett. Â
 ***************
Meg and her friends were not as successful, mostly because they didnât have a plan beyond âget great seatsâ, and they didnât feel like waiting in a huge, jostling melee for the auditorium doors to open. Â Still, they got in for the panel and had seats. Â They counted that as success, especially since all five women were seated together. Karen was determined to get to ask Ken Terhune, who played Sumendiâs wicked brother, Adranos, a question. Â He was so hot, she was sure she would have an instant orgasm if he actually spoke to her, and she was going to do whatever it took to make that happen. Â
The first thing sheâd done to get his attention was to come dressed as Afi, wife of Adranos. Â Another thing sheâd done was to make sure that her boobs looked spectacular in her Afi costume. Â Not that much of her boobs were in her Afi costume, but that was kind of the point. Â
While they waited for the panel to start, the women looked around the auditorium, admiring all the costumes and looking for cute guys. Â Liz saw one cute guy, right down front, in a really great Sumendi costume. Â She elbowed Meg and pointed. Â
âLook over there! That guyâs Sumendi is almost as good as your Tabiti! Â You should totally get a picture with him,â Liz told Meg. Â
âWhoa! Â That is a good costume. Â Heâs cute, too. Â But Iâm not going down there. Â What would I say? Â âHey, dude, I see weâre dressed as a couple, so letâs get our pictures taken together?â Â Iâd die of embarrassment.â
âThen Iâll say it. Â You look really good, and it doesnât look like he has a Tabiti with him. Â Come on.â
âNot happening, Liz. Thanks, though. Â Hey, look over there. Â Is that dude supposed to be a zombie from The Walking Dead?â
âI donât think so. Â I think he just needs to eat some vegetables or something.â
âUnfortunate.â
âHighly.â
 *******************
âCruz, Cruz⊠look at that Tabiti up there!â
âWhoa, dude, sheâs checkinâ you out, too. Â You should go meet her.â
âI canât go meet her â we gotta⊠protect these seats.â
âYouâre such a weenie, Otis.â
âAre you really willing to give up these primo seats just to - Â Oh! Theyâre starting!â
 **************
The panel was awesome. Nobody on the panel said anything about Brianâs outstanding costume, but he was sure they saw him. Â Both Brian and Cruz were hoping to get picked to ask their questions, which would have given Brian a perfect opportunity to show off his Sumendi wings, but that didnât happen, either. Â Still, it was a great panel. Â Well worth the hassle of getting in and getting these seats.
After the panel, it was time to cruise the main exhibition hall. Â That was going to take some time and coordination, because Anthony Lang was going to be signing autographs and taking pictures at three Oâclock, and Brian had pre-paid for his photo op. Â He was not going to miss out on that. Â Cruz had thought that the $75 price tag was too high, but that was ridiculous. Â How could you put a price on getting your picture taken with the real Sumendi? Â
 ***********
Meg and her friends needed a break after the excitement of the panel. Â Theyâd do the Exhibition Hall, but right now coffee was a must. Â Karen was bummed that she didnât get to ask her question, and that Ken Terhune hadnât commented on her Afi costume (or her boobs). But they all thought a little caffeine would fix her right up. Â
Theyâd been right, and for a while, theyâd had a great time shopping the booths and checking out the costumes. Â But after lunch, Susan and Lita were getting a little tired of the Con. Â The others wouldnât say it out loud, of course, until after theyâd gone home, but Susan and Lita werenât really âfansâ so much as just there for the experience itself. Â Maybe Susan and Lita wouldnât even understand that was an insult. Â But best not to say it out loud anyway. Â
âCome on, you guys, weâre only halfway done with the Hall! Â Weâre never gonna see everything if we take another break,â Meg urged, pulling on Litaâs arm.
âWeâre getting smoothies. Weâll meet you after. Â We know the pattern youâre following around the Hall, weâll just find you.â Â And just like that, Susan and Lita ducked into the crowd and were gone, leaving Meg, Karen, and Liz (wearing a Sumendi T-shirt, which was closer to being in costume than her friends had thought theyâd get) to shop the rest of the booths. Â
The next booth they came to sold nothing but hoodies â from traditional ones printed with pictures and logos from all sorts of fantasy franchises to ones with attachments on the hoods that made you look like your favorite character. Â They spent a long time looking through them all, especially trying to find one with Adranosâs crown in Karenâs size. Â They were ultimately successful, and she waited in line to pay more than Meg ever would have for it. Â Liz continued to hunt through every hoodie with a Dr. Who theme, afraid she would miss The One if she didnât look at every single one to make sure she hadnât missed a design.
Megâs feet were starting to hurt in Tabitiâs signature stiletto-heeled red boots, so she took the opportunity to lean against one side of the booth so she could stand on one foot at a time, giving the other a rest. Â
âThat is an outstanding costume,â a voice at her ear said. Â
Meg turned to face the cute guy in the really good Sumendi costume they had seen at the panel. Â
âOh, hi,â she stammered, immediately embarrassed at the overzealous squeal in her voice.  âYours is great, too.  I saw you, at the panel.  Itâs really⊠great.â  Could I be more of an idiot? Â
âThanks. Â Your headpiece is awesome. Â Isnât that heavy?â Â He asked. They had to practically shout to be heard over the jostling, milling throng hemming them in. Â But it was worth it. Â Brian couldnât believe his luck finding the Tabiti theyâd seen at the panel, who was even cuter up close. Â
âIt isnât that bad,â Meg answered, self-consciously touching her headpiece and knocking a shower of glitter onto her shoulder.  âItâs papier-mĂąchĂ©, mostly.  So not that heavy.  You can, you know, touch it.  If you want.â
Brian touched Megâs headpiece, knocking on it a little with his finger. Â âWow. Â Iâd swear it was metal, from a distance.â Â From a distance? Â Nice one, moron. Â Sheâs gonna punch you.
âThanks. Â What did you use for the red streaks in your hair?â
âThat? Â Thatâs natural.â
Meg laughed, but then began to cough as she inhaled a bit of spit down the wrong tube. Â Oh, for fuckâs sake. Â Kill me now. Â You, Aquaman over there, if you could just impale me with your trident, that would be great. Â Heâs gonna think I have fucking tuberculosis. Â
The problem was that he had smiled.  This Sumendi, who was pretty cute to begin with, and had made a very funny joke, had smiled after he said it.  And his smile was⊠electrifying.  He had gorgeous, white teeth and, with his dark hair and dark eyes, and the little moustache and soul patch he wore (which Meg usually hated), it was just⊠well, it was enough to make her choke on her own spit like the gargoyle she was. Â
He patted her on the back. âYou gonna be OK? Â Iâm a firefighter. Â If you need CPR, just say the word.â Â
Meg flapped her hands around, trying to signal that she would be OK, and desperately tried to control her cough. Â She could feel the tears smearing her mascara and knew for a fact her face was beet red. Yeah. Â Some Tabiti. Â Sheâs supposed to hold Sumendi spellbound with her charms, which Iâm dead certain donât involve hacking up a lung at his feet. Â
âIâm⊠ Iâm OKâŠâ  Meg choked. The taller guy behind Sumendi handed her a bottle of water, which she gratefully accepted.  He was kind of cute, too, she noticed.  The water helped.
âIâm sorry.â  Meg covered her face with her hand.  âI just⊠something went down the wrong way, I donât knowâŠâ
âAs long as youâre OK.â Sumendi was looking at her with a sort of serious expression. Â That looked good on him, too. Â Did he say he was a firefighter? Â Meg really, really liked firefighters.
âYeah, yeah. Â Iâm fine. Â Thanks for the water,â she said to the taller guy, handing back the bottle.
âKeep it. Â Just in case,â he said, smiling. Â âHey, would you mind if we got a picture of you guys? You know, together?â
Sumendi smiled again. âYeah, that would be great!â Â
Meg was still working to calm her spasming trachea, and knew what her makeup must now look like.  âIâd like that, but⊠ Can I justâŠâ  She pointed to a mirror in the jewelry booth next to the hoodie booth. Â
âOh, sure!â Â Sumendi said excitedly. Â Could I sound more like a fourteen-year-old? Â Damn it!
Meg went over to the next booth, bending down to survey the damage to her eye makeup. Â It was bad. Â She pulled her small backpack off her shoulder and rummaged inside. Â People kept bumping against her in the overcrowded Exhibition Hall, making her work much harder. Â She was eventually pushed over to the other side of the booth, where there was another mirror. Â She had to wipe a lot of smeared mascara off her cheeks, which messed up the rest of her makeup, which meant she had to re-do that, too, before she could re-apply her mascara. Â It took a solid five minutes, with added time to deal with all the pushes and shoves from the crowd and those wanting to get closer to use the mirror themselves to try on jewelry.
âYou ready to go on?â Meg heard Karenâs voice at her elbow. She looked up, surprised. Â
âOh, well, weâre gonna get a picture together, me and Sumendi.â Â She looked over to where Sumendi and his friend had been, but couldnât see them in the seething crowd. Â
âWhat Sumendi?â
âThe cool one, the one we saw at the panel. Â They were right there-â
Liz stepped up beside Karen. âThey didnât have any good Dr. Who shirts. Â Letâs go.â
âNo, but⊠wait-â
âMeg, I donât see any Sumendi around here. Â Maybe he bailed.â
âHe didnât bail! Â They were right there!â Â She moved toward the hoodie booth as best she could, but there were so many people crowded around it was difficult to maneuver. Â Pushing a bit, she got further into the walkway but couldnât see Sumendi or his friend. Â
âDamn! Â Theyâre gone.â
Karen and Liz hustled Meg along to the next booth. Â They still had a lot of ground to cover. Â Meg was crushed. Â That Sumendi had been really cute. Â And he said he was a firefighter. Â And that smile! Â
Meanwhile, Brian and Cruz had been shoved into the hoodie booth, and were trying to get back to the walkway, but it was taking forever. Â Finally, Joe used his elbow-swim move to escape the booth, with Brian in tow. By the time they got out to the walkway, Tabiti was nowhere in sight. Â Brian sighed. He had really liked the deep copper color of her hair, especially with her green eyes. Â Plus, sheâd remembered him from the panel! Â Â
 ****************
âOK, this is where I leave you,â Cruz announced as Brian joined the line for his picture with Anthony Lang. Â It was only two thirty, but he wanted to be sure to get his picture and autograph. Â
âYou sure, Cruz? Â This is Anthony Lang weâre talking about.â
âI know, but Iâm not paying seventy-five bucks for a picture with a dude I can see in a movie for less than twenty. Â Youâre crazy. Iâm going back in, to finish the Exhibition Hall.â
âFine. Â Youâre missing out.â Â
Cruz gave a little wave and disappeared into the crowd, just missing colliding with Meg as she maneuvered through the crush of people to join the line for pictures and autographs with Anthony Lang. Â Looking around, she figured out where the end of the line was and stepped up behind the last person, who happened to have a really good Sumendi costume â
âHey! Â Itâs you!â Â Brian greeted Meg, again giving her that blinding smile. Â She blinked a bit, momentarily confused by his sudden reappearance and by the effect that smile had on her.
âOh, hi! Â We got separated. Â Iâm sorry, I really wanted to have a picture with you.â Â
âYeah, so did I. Â But we can do it now. Â You know, if you want.â
Megâs face fell a little. âIâd like that. Â I guess youâll have to text it to me, though, because my phone died.â
Now Brianâs face fell. âYou are not going to believe this.â
âWhat?â
âI donât have a phone, either. Â I gave it to my roommate, because thereâs no place for it in my costume, and I didnât want to be bothered with it. Â He has it in his jacket.â
Just Brianâs luck. Â Here he was, looking great as Sumendi, with a long wait ahead next to the best Tabiti heâd seen at the Con, who seemed genuinely excited to have their picture taken together, and neither of them had a phone. His choices were laugh or cry. Â Or swear a blue streak, he supposed, but he didnât know this girl and she seemed really nice. Â Maybe she would be turned off if he swore. Â But he was brutally disappointed. Â
Meg laughed, so Brian joined her. Â She was no more thrilled than he was not to have a camera, but maybe they could find her friends, or his, when they were done with Anthony Lang. Â Or maybe they could get a picture taken in the booth with Anthony Lang. Â That would be really cool. Â In any event, she was pretty happy to get to spend the next hour or so with this cute Sumendi while they waited. Â They were going to get a chance to actually talk. Â To get to know each other. Â She wondered whether he was single. Â She also wondered, based on the excellent craftsmanship of his costume and his obvious closeness to the guy heâd called his âroommateâ, whether he was straight. Â She really hoped so.
âIâm Brian, by the way,â he introduced himself.
âMeg.â
âMeg. Â Nice name.â
âShort for Margaret. Call me Margaret and youâll get Tabitiâs scepter up your nose.â
Brian held up his hands. âMeg it is. Â That tip looks like it could do some real damage.â Â
Meg smiled and took a look at the tip of her scepter, which had a lampwork glass flame at the end. Â It was fairly pointed. Â âJust letting you know the rules.â
âThat scepter is great. Youâre really talented. Â Howâd you make that?â
Meg explained the rather simple process of fabricating the scepter. Â The basic idea wasnât too complicated; sheâd started with an old baton. But she made Brian laugh with her story of the lengthy and heated negotiations sheâd had to conduct with the friend who made the tip. Â
The friend, Alice, made lampwork beads, which was a fairly expensive hobby that required a great deal of practice to master. Â Besides that, the flame tip had to be both intricate - woven of several different colors of glass - and strong enough to withstand whatever abuse it would get at the Con. Â Aliceâs initial price had been far too steep for Meg to afford, so Meg had offered to clean Aliceâs apartment in addition to paying what cash she could. Â No deal. Meg had added a week of cat sitting, but still the price was more than she could pay. Â In the end, Alice had agreed to accept the price Meg offered, along with the apartment cleaning and cat sitting, plus one more, hideous cost. Â
Alice had a cousin named Harold. Â Haroldâs mother, Aliceâs aunt, was very concerned that Harold, who was going on twenty, hadnât met the right girl yet. Â Aliceâs aunt kept pressuring Alice to set Harold up. Â So Meg had ended up having to accept a date with Harold. Â
There was a reason Harold hadnât met the right girl. Â Several, in fact. Â First and foremost, Harold had the worst breath Meg had ever experienced. Â He was also extremely shy, but only at first. Once the lights had gone down in the movie theater, suddenly he was all hormones and hands, and Meg had spent the next two hours ignoring the movie in favor of fending off almost-continual frontal assaults. Â
In the end, the guy behind them in the theater had actually leaned forward and hissed to Harold, âDude, even I can see youâre not gonna get there with her. Â Give it up and letâs all leave with what little dignity we have left.â
After the movie, Harold had taken Meg to a bar he said he frequented. Â Meg was completely uninterested in Harold, but after what sheâd been through, she was very interested in a drink, so sheâd agreed. Â âThey know me here,â Harold said proudly. Â
They didnât know him there. And, apparently, he didnât know them, either, because the barâs clientele, while sparse, was mostly female, and entirely gay. Â When they had their drinks (Meg didnât usually do shots, but it was an emergency), Harold had once again begun relentlessly trying to grope her. Â Meg was usually a very nice person, but sheâd had enough. So she said, quite loudly, âListen, I have asked you more than once to stop trying to touch me like that. Â No means no. Â Knock it off.â
Harold was very unceremoniously escorted from the bar by a lovely woman named Bud. Â Meg had enjoyed getting to know Bud over a few drinks, and theyâd had a few laughs at Haroldâs expense, but Meg was honest about her preferences when Bud handed over her phone number. Â Bud didnât seem to mind that Meg wasnât planning to call, which Meg actually found pretty attractive. Â She kept Budâs number. Â She didnât even mind having to pay for the cab home.
Brian liked that story a lot. Â He had really appreciated the opportunity to simply stand there, listening to Meg and appreciating the way her green eyes sparkled when she smiled, and the cute way her nose wrinkled when she laughed. Â Meg was funny, and Brian especially liked that the story indicated quite clearly that she wasnât seeing anyone. Â Which, of course, was part of Megâs reason for telling it, in addition to introducing the topic of lesbians in hopes that Brian would share something that would let her know which team he played for. Â
âNow itâs your turn to tell me an embarrassing story about you,â Meg invited. Â
âThe problem with that is there are so many choices,â Brian mused.  âStuff seems to⊠happen to me.â  He hemmed and hawed for a few moments.  He needed to find a story that would let her know that he, too, was single, and preferably one that also reminded her (in case sheâd missed it the first time) that he was a firefighter.  Women loved firefighters. Â
âWell, there was this one time on a fire â did I mention Iâm a firefighter? â when this really, really huge guy was stuck in a hammock.  We never did learn why he had a hammock in his living room, butâŠâ Â
Brian told a very funny story that ended with the man being rescued (if not very gracefully) and the man wanting to reward Brian with a date with his sister.  He had tried valiantly to get out of the ârewardâ, explaining to the man that it wasnât necessary, and that it was really a little frowned upon for firefighters to be rewarded for just doing their jobs.  Baked goods or something, sure, but⊠ Brian had been entirely unable to talk the man out of it. The entire firehouse had given him endless shit about it, because all of them imagined the sister as, basically, the brother in drag. Â
Until she showed up at the firehouse for their date and was one of the most beautiful women any of them had ever seen. Â
âSo? Â Did you marry her and live happily ever after?â Â Meg asked, laughing (on the outside, at least â she was finding that she cared more by the moment whether he liked girls). Â
âIâm afraid not,â Brian answered with a cute twist of his lips.  âShe was about two feet taller than I am, and she was, um⊠ letâs just say we should set her up with your friendâs cousin.  Theyâd never be heard from again.â
âI thought guys liked women with, um, an appetite.â Â
âWell, sure, to a point.  But that one⊠I donât think I want to marry a woman if Iâd be afraid to fall asleep around her.â
They both enjoyed a long moment of laughter. Â Hmmm. So heâs single and apparently straight. Well, well. Â
The conversation moved on to the Planetary Saviors. Â For quite some time, Brian and Meg enjoyed talking about what they liked â and didnât like â about the Sumendi movies thus far and what they hoped to see in the new movie that would include all of the Planetary Saviors. Â The fun of that conversation was that they didnât always agree â Brian thought Sumendiâs look in the movies was nowhere near as good as in the original comics, while Meg had to admit to not having read the comics themselves. Â Somehow, whether because they were intentionally trying to humor one another due to their mutual attraction, or because they really didnât mind, they found that their differences actually made them see the Planetary Saviors universe just a bit differently than they had. Â Rather than being annoyed, they were each favorably impressed with the otherâs slightly different take on the franchise. Â Â
âSumendiâs made of fire, right?  I mean, heâs basically the son of a volcano, so why doesnât he have any glow to him? In the comics, he does.  He has a sort of inner light that makes him look sort of⊠molten inside, you know?â
Since Meg hadnât seen the comics, they borrowed some comic books and a couple of artistsâ renderings that people around them in line had purchased at the Con. Â She saw Brianâs point. Â He liked that she was interested in his thoughts, and was especially impressed when she began to think out loud about ways he could make his costume have that same lit-from-within quality. Â
âThatâs genius!â Â He cried. Â âI would never have thought of that. Â Iâm going to-â
The crowd noise, which had been fairly deafening, suddenly ceased entirely as the air was split by a scream. Â All eyes turned in the direction it had come from, behind and to the left of the booth at which Brian and Meg were waiting for Anthony Lang. Â A knot of people were standing around a woman on the floor, but the thick crowd had parted so that there was a few feet between the people with the woman and the staring mass just beyond. Â The woman on the ground was jerking violently and appeared to be very pregnant. Â
âSheâs seizing,â Meg cried as she slipped quickly under the ropes that demarcated the line she and Brian had been in. Â Running over to the woman, Meg dropped her belongings as she knelt on the floor beside her. Â She reached out and took the woman by the shoulders, helping her to turn onto her side, and was surprised to find Brian kneeling next to her, bending one of the womanâs legs so that she rolled smoothly and easily. Â
Meg whipped off her Tabiti headpiece and set it on the floor next to her, beginning to assess the woman quickly. Â She determined that she was breathing shallowly and irregularly as she seized, and had a strong pulse.
âWhoâs with her?â Brian asked loudly, using a tone that instantly commanded attention. Â
âWe are â sheâs my sister. This is her husband,â a thin, terrified-looking woman in a pretty bad SuperGirl costume answered, pointing out the blank-faced teenager next to her.
While Meg commandeered a sweatshirt from a bystander to put under the womanâs head, Brian continued to ask the right questions. Â
âWhat happened?â
âShe just⊠ fell down.  She started jerking like this and she wonât wake up!â Â
âHow far along is she?â
âSheâs thirty two weeks,â the sister answered. Â âWhatâs wrong with her? Â Whatâs happening?â
Brian looked at Meg, who almost imperceptibly shook her head. Â
âWeâre going to figure that out. Â Who has a phone?â
Brian pointed to the first person whose brandishing of a cell phone caught his attention. Â âOK, you. Â Call 911. Â Stand right here next to me, and when you get them on the line, put them on speaker. You-â he pointed to a spray-tanned Superman. Â âGo get help. Security, anyone with a walkie-talkie. Tell them whatâs happening and get us whatever medical equipment they have here.â
The woman appeared to have stopped seizing for the moment. Â Meg looked at the teenager who had been identified as the womanâs husband. âTalk to me, Dad. Â What medical problems does she have?â
âN-n-nothing. Â Sheâs been fine.â
âHas she ever had a seizure before?â
âNo! Â Whatâs wrong with her?â
âWhat medications does she take?â
âNothing. Â Prenatal vitamins.â
Meg took her pulse at her wrist again, and then felt for her pulse at her throat. Â She leaned toward Brian and muttered quietly, âHer pulse is bounding â weâll know more when we can get a BP, but Iâm thinking eclampsia.â
âThat woulda been my guess. Pregnant, seizing⊠ You a doctor?â
âRN. Â We need help.â
âItâs on its way. Â For the moment, itâs you and me.â Â He looked up at the person heâd asked to call 911. âWhatâs the holdup?â
âI donât know.  I donât have much of a signal in hereâŠâ
Sharply exhaling in exasperation, Brian looked up at another person who was holding a phone and appeared to be filming the incident. Â âYou. Call 911. Â And nobody else better be filming. Â This woman has the right to privacy, same as you.â Â
The second person got through immediately and handed Brian the phone. Â He put it on speaker and, as Meg fed him information, he relayed it to the 911 operator. Â They worked smoothly together, and Brian had time to notice the expertise with which Meg worked with the woman, who was beginning to regain consciousness. Â They were both experienced first responders, so their teamwork was not entirely surprising, but there was also an element of natural communication between them. Â Theyâd gravitated to their roles in this situation without thought or discussion.
Meg reached up and unclasped her cape. Â Brian caught the movement and immediately understood. Â He helped her remove it and cover the woman with it, then removed his own (which was a little more difficult due to the wings) and put that over her, too. Â For the next five minutes, they did what they could to make the woman comfortable while Meg got as much medical history as possible and monitored her vital signs. Â Then the woman began to seize again, and they kept her safe while she thrashed and jerked, making sure she didnât hit her head and getting people to give them extra clothing so that they could keep something soft between her spasming limbs and the hard floor. Â
Brian leaned in to Meg. âThis is lasting too long.â
âYeah. Â And sheâs stopped breathing. Â As soon as she stops seizing, we need to be ready to do CPR.â
âGot it.â Â
At that moment, three people came running through the crowd, pushing their way into the circle around the woman with cases of emergency equipment. Â They were all EMTs stationed at the facility for the event, so Meg moved aside and reported to them that she was an RN and Brian was a firefighter, and told them what they knew so that the EMTs could take over. Â She wondered what was taking the ambulance so long, since there were two hospitals within minutes of the facility, but she thought she was probably just dealing with the distorted sense of time that comes with an emergency.
âDo you have any medications in your kits?â She asked the EMT who appeared to be leading the team.
âNo.â
âShit.â
âYeah, donât get me started.â Â
âShe seems to be coming out of it, and I think sheâs breathing again. Â Want me to get a BP?â
âNah, I got it. Â But thanks.â Â
Not long afterward, the sound of a siren was clearly heard, even over the sound of the mob that was now getting back into the swing of the Con. Â A fair number of people were still huddled around the scene, watching, but the circle around them was only a few people deep now, since beyond that, no one could really see anything. Â The rest had decided to go back to their shopping. Â As the ambulance crew hurried through the Hall, Brian could follow their progress fairly accurately by the disturbance in the throng. Â He began to back people up so that the paramedics could get through with the gurney. Â
The ambulance crew was one he didnât know. Â Their arrival caused quite a bit of excitement and hubbub in the area, and Brian lost track of Meg in the group of milling, pushing people. Â He wasnât needed to help lift the woman onto the gurney, so he stepped back a bit and tried to control the crowd, to give the paramedics as much room as he could get them in the press of curious gawkers. Â Soon, the woman had been given some medication to stop her seizures, and the gurney carrying her was rushed from the scene, her sister and teenage husband in tow. Â
The crowd flowed back together as though they had never been there, except for Megâs Tabiti headpiece, which Brian saw on the floor and picked up. Â He found himself unable to resist the tide of movement, and was swept closer to the booth where he was supposed to be having his picture taken with Anthony Lang. Â He didnât see Meg anywhere. Â Without her Tabiti headpiece on, it was impossible to identify her head among the seeming thousands around him. Â
He thought she would probably make for the booth again, though, so he fought his way over to it, only to see a large sign:
Anthony Lang Appearance Cancelled For Today.
The sign gave a website people could go to in order to try to reschedule or get refunds. Â Meg wasnât there. Â
Brian carried Megâs headpiece under his arm as he looked everywhere in the huge Exhibition Hall over the next hour.  There were simply too many people, moving in too many directions, and the Hall was just too big.  Meg was nowhere to be found.  All he had to prove she had been real was the papier-mĂąchĂ© headpiece sheâd worn as part of her costume.

About that Dark Visions comic...
I think itâs fair to say that when Marvelâs Dark Visions miniseries about Vader as seen from a different perspective was announced, everybody was excited. We have been hammered on the head since ROTS that âthere are heroes on both sidesâ , and with the expectations concerning the end of the saga as a massive redemption and hope plot, you were bound to be curious about what they would come up with. TBH, I was not expecting to see a softer side to Vader. It would be wrong to expect anything like that, and it would somehow diminish from what happens to him in the OT. He is supposed to be more machine than man. So, no, I definitely did not expect him, or wished him to be the kind of guy operating as the Death Star Secret Santa, knitting socks for the poor and needy, or rescuing peopleâs pets. It was not my understanding that he was much loved by his Imperial âcolleaguesâ either. When we first see him in ANH; he is derided and dismissed both by a colleague (sorry, forgot the name but you all know whose faithless person I am thinking of) and Leia. Respected for sure, because of the fear he instills in people. So if awe is obviously the right word to use, in the most etymological sense of the term, that is to say â a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonderâ, how many people found Vader awesome? Besides the audience. There had to be. And as a concept, it was pretty cool.
That being said, if you think of the title for the series, there were already many ways of interpreting it. Dark Visions... Visions of the power of the Dark Side? The way some people saw Vader? The way Vader thought people saw him? Did the stories happen for real or are they just what the title imply they are: visions. Images. Fantasies. Daydreams or nightmares? Possibly just the imagination of some deranged mind. There is something there that implies that we are not dealing with something too objective. But rather something unhinged and disturbing.
Now, I intend to keep this in mind about the issue that has been raising so much concern: âTall, Dark, and Handsomeâ. I think malaise is really the word we should settle for. This issue is problematic in many ways.
For those who havenât read it or just heard about it through social media and people complaining about it (possibly people on the other side of the spectrum fanning about it), this is how you can sum it up: this is the first person narrative of an unnamed nurse, working on the Death Star for Vaderâs personal doctor. The nurse has developed an obsessive infatuation for Vader that has her snoop around him and collect bits and pieces about him (mostly gorish remains of his time at the medical bay) that she hides in her room. She keeps on daydreaming about him and the connection she thinks they have, until one day she musters up her courage and goes to talk to him in his private quarters in order to let him know of her love for him. He cuts her off in all the meanings of the word, both interrupting her speech of eternal devotion and undying love, and piercing her through with his saber. Last moment we see her is lying dead on the floor while he moves away and asking for the sanitation to rid him of the âgarbageâ.
Ok, thatâs a tall order. Here are points that I find entirely problematic.
1.The Question of Agency:
The authors decided to give a voice, a narrative agency to a character that is presented as inconsequential to the story. She is an anonymous nurse, a dot, in the bigger picture of the Empire. Much, letâs say, like our current ST heroes: Rey, Finn, and Rose, who started as ânobodyâ, even more so in the case of Finn and Rey who have literally been deprived of their identities. You could think itâs cool to thus give a voice to this nurse. Even more so when you consider that throughout the comic, she is presented as downtrodden, poor, pushed over, abused physically and verbally, dismissed, and despised. Her employer disrespects her constantly, calling her âfoolâ, âidiotâ, or âstupidâ. He shoves her around, and also diminishes her job, calling it ânot a real jobâ or insinuating that she does not do her job correctly. Cases in point:
And what do we get in this story? A female nobody who starts asserting herself. Wow.
She tells her own story. First person narrative. She becomes an agent.
Look at the evolution of her daydream fantasies. She starts from damsel in distress who needs a man to protect her from her daily abuser
From nurse whose job means something, to a solid professional, and equal partner to her fantasy Lord:
And finally a powerful woman in her own rights, even overshadowing her partner, and who is able to defend herself.
Which then matures into her mustering up the courage to speak for herself, and tell her feelings to the (unwilling) object of her affection.
Except that.... well...she is just presented as a massive psycho. And, ok, itâs fair, we all know that there are female stalkers, and that her obsession for Vader is totally crazy because she doesnât know anything about him, and she actually fell for someone who was treating her as poorly as the others. But there is the malaise there... The mix of female empowerment and batshit craziness. Thatâs what put a lot of people ill-at-ease. I wouldnât even call that subversion, because, dudes, what are we subverting there exactly. Itâs not like women are not daily abused and treated poorly at work and in their relationships on a daily basis... And are we supposed to take that as a cautionary tale about fangirl craziness? Because, there again, why did they need to have that girl get such a shitty treatment all through the comic. It is like the comic says that she deserved it. In the end itâs not just Vader calling her trash. Itâs also the doctor calling her trash for most of the comic, and even have her literally waddle in a trash compactor. Cause this was supposed to be subtle?
Like, fine, if it were only Vader calling her garbage because the man is just dead inside, which, fairly, is represented in the comic. But itâs just not Vader, it is the way the character is presented through the eyes of the doctor AND even through the eyes of a cartoonist who keeps on representing her with the stupidest darned faces.
And there is no other viewpoint. Family, friends, other nurses or colleagues who could give us another idea about her. Or explain why she is like that. Nope. Basically, this woman is given a voice just so she can be cut off mid-sentence and made... fun of... I guess? Was that the authorâs goal? Is it what we are supposed to feel? About this pathetic character and her pathetic life, dreams, goals, feelings, and eventual demise?
The âSubversionâ of Female Romantic Tropes
Like ... LOL... How is that âsubvertedâ anyways? But, ok, letâs go through them. It has all the classic elements of female literature.
The Cinderella story: nobody falls for high lord and expects to be swooped off her feet. Complete with ball scene, because, yes, why not? I give them a point, though, for the cool reflection on the ground which has her in her regular scrubs... BTW, Beauty and the Beast in the mix as well.
the nurse complex! Otherwise known as the Florence Nightingale effect. You know, woman is going to take care of the guy... They even made her a real nurse! Again, so subtle. Couldnât make her any other profession and still be victim of this complex.
the reference to so-called âtrashyâ female lit, think bodice ripping, Harlequin, and their infamous covers. Even the title of the comic: âTall, Dark, and Handsomeâ
The effing Phantom of the Opera!
and of course all the female discourse about love, because, yep, trashy: âkindred spiritsâ etc...
And again, how are we supposed to interpret it? Well, hang on, this woman, remember, is a bat-shit crazy deluded psycho, who has delusions about life and love. Oh, and the doctor says she is trash. And he throws all her stupid gory, disgusting trickets in the trash. Oh and also Vader says she is garbage. Well. Ok. So, I guess all of that which mattered to her, all her ideas, all that she loved, was just that. Trash. Garbage. Well, take that, you female reader!
But wait, it gets even better...
Star Wars is just trash!
Yep, because on closer look, most of the fantasies this woman has are very Star-Warsy. I am floored that they are actually trashing these:
Anakin and PadmĂ©âs Naboo scenery, green, lush, terrace, nightgowns...
The scene when Anakin learns about PadmĂ©âs death:
and of course, the one that you were not expecting... Reylo... âYou are not aloneâ
Again, why is this problematic? In itself, it is fine and fair to be making fun of trashy female literature and campy romance novels, it is also fine to make fun of crazy stalkers, and it is also fine to be making fun of Star Wars. So why does it feel so icky in this comic somehow?
You canât help but feel disgusted when you consider how poorly this woman is represented. There is not one aspect of her life that is not ridiculed. And again, this is about a woman who has NOTHING. They could have the girl fall in love with Vader and being killed by him because he is a cold-hearted machine. He killed his wife, the love of his life, so yea, of course he will feel not a pang of remorse or hesitation at killing this nobody who thinks she is in love with him. But they did not need to make fun of the very little she had in her life: her dreams. Her effing dreams. Plus the crazy stalker psycho. And the crazy face. And the fact that again we are talking about a woman, who had NOTHING. No family, no connection, no friends, no respect at work, not many possessions except her sad little Vader treasure chest.
And again, context. Here we are, reading a Star Wars comic where a lot of fanboys have been using the EXACT same terms to ridicule women in the fandom. Especially in the Reylo context. Trash. Garbage. Crazy bitches. Ridiculing theories about ... well, well, ainât it a sweet surprise... Phantom of the Opera, or Beauty and the Beast parallels with Reylo. Iâll be damned. It feels crazy awkward, if you ask me. I mean, again, itâs all fair, but you donât do that when you are in the midst of a toxic fandom war.
So why do I give zero F... about it in the end?
If some antis in the fandom saw that as validation, well, let them have their moment of happiness. It wonât last. We can give them that.
One, I donât think for one second that it means anything about what will happen in the ST as far as Reylo is concerned. Again, they are even making fun of Anidala in the comic, and dude, that thing happened. As my good friends from @lordsofthesithpodcast would tell you after their glorious SWCC panel : Romance, these ships belong in Star Wars.
Two, as I highlighted in the introduction, this belongs in the Dark Visions series. It is meant, in my own opinion, to be disturbing and unhinged. Not sugar coated. So maybe the whole point was shock value. Mission accomplished. It was poor taste again given the context and the awful treatment THEY (and not just Vader) give their female character, but yea, dark visions. Not Star Wars Adventures. You have to look at the target audience and everything.
Three, if it were not for the in-your-face references to female tropes, I actually took most of it as a critique of fandom in general. The problem is not that she is a fangirl. There are some crazy obsessive fangirls, mind you. The problem is that they are making fun of all things female on top of that. But, remove the romantic aspects. Couldnât that apply to fanboys as well? I could totally picture a cadet, or some other young imperial, developing the same crazed obsession over Vader. And it was just as toxic. And, tbh, it could very well be. Collecting trinkets is not just a girl thing, and after seeing with my own eyes the tons of merch purchased by fanboys at the recent SWCC convention, or the obsessive way some guy could talk to you about Vader and the minute trivial details in his life, or that they are the only ones understanding the guy, well yea... it works...
Iâll even go a step further. I wondered for a sec if the whole thing was not even a critical meta about the franchise as a whole. Let me explain. Some fanboys have complained about the femininization of the franchise, that is âpollutingâ the shades of Pemberley, I mean Star Wars. Claiming that what is happening right now is utter garbage. Also also, I have another possible reading which has the nurse representing the current state of the fandom and how crazy obsessed they can be over a franchise that some currently view as tired and dead inside (especially since it has fallen into the fold of Disney). Representing the unhealthy relationship between the two. And guess what, it doesnât end well for the fandom. Who will never get what they want.
I will finally quote this from Chuck Wendig who was fired from the project and came up with that particular comment on Twitter, and which actually seems to go with how I tried to read it myself:
Apropos of absolutely nothing, my issue three of SHADOW OF VADER was about a toxic fanboy (a morgue attendant on the Death Star) who became obsessed with Vader. (And it didnât end well for him. Er, obviously.) I thought it was good and Iâm sorry you wonât see it! Onward we go.Â
I think they kept some of the original idea from Wendig, but it took a turn for the worse. It would be great if the authors cared to explain about their intent for this piece if any. I am not saying they should. I actually totally respect and support full freedom of speech and authorial choices. It is our choice, then, as a reader to read or not the material we donât care about. I am just curious to know their opinion I guess, and I was not able to find any comment online. If anyone has a reference, I am interested...
In any event, I think everyone should read the comic for themselves if they are curious about it. Better to make your own opinion about it.

Vâs After End - Notes / Opinion
Below the cut will be my reactions, opinions, & spoilers for Vâs After Ending episodes & endings. Thereâs a sprinkling of ~thirst~ & a lot of confusion/screaming throughout. I am afraid I havenât gone back to proofread the episode reactions, so theyâre likely a little messy & misspelled.Â
Episode reactions are at the top, separated by episode & endings. Long-winded opinion/discussion about the route itself is at the bottom.
Journey below at your own risk! xx
Episode 1
80 hourglasses for EPISODE ONE? Oh this man is EXPENSIIIIVE. How many episodes is this going to be? 8 TOTAL?! Goodness.
JUDGE OR FORGIVE?! Who am I judging & forgiving? Jihyun? Rika? Cauuuuuse... uhhhh.... that might change my answers a bit (a lot)
So this means there is going to be multiple endings, yeah?!
Probably hasnât even kissed you yet & is already packing up, leaving, & asking you to wait for him. I WAIT FOR NO MAN (Jk I waited for this man for over a year. Fuck.)
Oh shiiiit. Heâs leaving me his house?! Ok, Iâll wait. Have fun storming the castle! *waves*
Excuse me but does the news screen on Juminâs tv in his room show a picture of Rika & a caption underneath that says âMore Catfoodâ???
The bottom of the news reel also says âDoes Jumin Han is Gay?â Please, release us. Let it die.
JUUUMIIIIN. DO NOT BLAME YOURSELF. Let us comfort each other in these trying times. *waggles eyebrows*
JAEHEE COMING THROUGH WITH SOME GODDAMN SENSE & LOGIC. MY GIRL!
SOMEONE GET THIS MAN HIS WINE! Ohhh, nevermind heâs been drinking too much. Letâs have some water now, Juju.
This man is mourning & distraught. I am so sad for him. & now theyâre making him dependent on alcohol to relieve his stress? Uh, I donât like where this is going.
If anything happens to Jumin in this ending I swear...
WE HAVE CHATS TOO?! Damn what a complex update!
Wait, Zen WANTS to see MC & Jihyun being lovey dovey? Zenâs an imposter. Heâs been replaced. Thatâs the real secret of this After End.
Oh wait, he said he was lying. Whew.
It is weird giving replies in chats & not seeing little colorful hearts flying everywhereâŠ
Zen coming in HOT with the âDo you think you can forgive Rika?â question. Woooow.
You bet your ass I asked if anyone has heard anything from Ray. Iâm going to cry.
NEW SEVEN CG! SO CUTE! VANDERWOOD IN THE RAFT! SO CUUUUUTE!
âHeâs an adorable shy man.â Instantly chose this option. Vanderwood is cuuuute. Yes, Seven, please tell Vandy that I called him adorable & shy. Then tell me his reply. Then give him my number.
Yoosungâs got a package. IâM SURE HE DOES. ::eyes emoji::
OH SHIT, JUMIN DROPPING THE DNA BOMB. Wait, riddle me why the fuck Jumin had access to Sevenâs DNA in the first place...
Poor Seven, I thought he had already sort of knew/assumed the hacker was his twin. But I guess he didnât really know until now?
Looks like Iâm on the âFORGIVEâ path. Unlocked a Juminâs VA free chat. Alriiiight.
Episode 2
Ray? Omg my eyes teared up. IS HE ALIVE?! WHAT KINDA SHORT TEASE OF A VOICE IS THAT?! OMFGGGGG. D:
Episode 2 & Iâm already fucking crying. Great. Awesome. Lovely.
Honestly, Iâm glad theyâre having this discussion about V keeping all this information to himself about Saeranâs existence & use within Magenta because thatâs always had me side-eyeing V HARD. Iâm still of the opinion that he should have told at least Seven & Jumin about everything sooner. I get that he wanted to save Rika, but he was responsible for Saeran. Iâm still heated.
SAEYOUNG HAS GONE ROGUE!
Mailman route when?! Kidding. His voice is nice though.
âBurn the letterâ JESUS, MC. CALM IT DOWN.
RIKA WENT MISSING. OMFGGGG. THIS AFTER END! I JUST WANTED TO KISS JIHYUN. WHAT THE FRICK FRACK IS GOING ON?!
âWe found remnants of DNA that matched with those of Luciel scattered about in the remains of Magenta. Since the explosion was of no ordinary sizeâŠ.â My heart hurts. My head hurts. My soul hurts.
This super sad music is just making me feel worse. I hate this. Iâm crying again. Iâm getting emotional whiplash.
Ray deserved better. Full stop.
Rika & Saeyoung left alone & Rayâs theme starts playing. How fucking dare this game fuck with me. Iâm literally lying on the floor in a ball, playing this game & crying. What the hell.
For a second I saw Saeyoung making that fist in the CG & thought he was about to punch Rika.
Wow can yâall believe Jihyun basically Noped the Fuck Out of his own After End?
Hey Siri, turn off Rikaâs voice.
Seven is dropping a lot of truth. ::quietly sips my tea::
God, Saeyoungâs prayer to Saeran is heartbreaking. Props to this VA though, damn heâs good.
Still on the âFORGIVEâ path. Iâm going to have fun going back & taking the judgement path.
Episode 3
Jumin âTHERE WILL BE NO MORE SECRETSâ Han fucking coming through! My boy! God, I love him so much.
First sun reference weâve had. I thought there would be more by now.
Jihyun is out there falling in love with an MC in his head that heâs hardly spoken with since he left. That⊠canât be healthy, my dude.
Jumin showing up in the goddamn woods in his suit is hot.
Jumin Han is so so good, yâall. This conversation between him & Saeyoung is absolutely amazing. Heâs doing his best to comfort & protect at the same time. He asked about Saeran. Heâs encouraging Saeyoung to live, helping him understand heâll come out of this pain & find new reasons to live. Heâs struggling too, but heâs doing so much to reach out & help Saeyoung.
The line about creating a new family, one without blood ties, broke me.
UhhhhâŠ. who was that? âWe found him but that woman is with him.â Saeyoung & Rika?
THE STRESS GAVE ZEN A PIMPLE. Can relate.
Hell yeah I flirted with Zen. He is still prettier than starlight.
âWhy donât you come over? :)â MC. GIRL. âŠ. I like the way you think.
Yoosung: âWELL IâM NOT GANDHI.â I fucking lost my shit.
âShould I drive Vâs car?â Uhhhhh YES.
âBut youâre gonna have to drive thru the night for hours. Iâm kind of worried.â Bitch, Iâm from Texas. I got this. 8 hours is a SHORT TRIP.
The disrespect. They arenât going to let me drive. I donât need a man to drive me.
DID VANDERWOOD JUST? OMG DID HE? DID HE JUST SHOOT SAEYOUNG?! BITCH, I LOVED YOU????? & YOU DID THIS????
Omg my heart. Why do they play with my emotions like this. Whew. WHEWWW.
VANDERWOOD CG!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Saeyoung is getting a lot of love tonight from his two new dads- Jumin & Vanderwood. Soft love & tough love. Shouting love at you with a gun in your face is new though.
YES! LETâS LOOK FOR A BODY! I STILL HAVE A SHRED OF HOPE RAY IS ALIVE. CâMON CHERITZ, PLEASE.
âWould you mind giving me some spotlight now?â Please let this be foreshadowing. I would eat UP a Vanderwood route.
Is another agency trying to kidnap Saeyoung? I am confusion? His dad?
Still on the âFORGIVEâ path. Yoosungâs VA has a cute voice. I liiiiike.
Episode 4
My Yoosung is so sad. This boy has a lot of hate built up in him. First for V, now for Rika &&& V. Goodness.
She? Who the hell is Rika talking about? She who?!
Seems like everyone is concerned that MC will pity or listen to Rika too much. Hmm. Hmm hmmmâŠ
Jumin is getting shit DONE.
2 years flashback. ????
Mika?! Who the fuck? Is this the âsheâ Rika was talking about earlier?
What he hell kinda narrative? Who is this woman? Supposedly some other girl from the orphanage Rika was a part of. Sheâs introduced & being used as the device that implanted this idea into Rikaâs brain that she had âa devilâ inside of her? Sheâs the reason Rika broke it off with V? Why? This feel like it cheapens everything. & why the hell is she calling Rika âMinaâ? Is that Rikaâs real name & I just forgot?!
IS RIKA LYING? WHY DID SHE WAIT THIS LONG TO TELL SAEYOUNG ABOUT THIS âSTURDY ROOMâ? COULD SAERAN REALLY BE ALIVE? Or is she trying to trick Saeyoung into leaving the cabin?!
Ok so the twinsâ father has to be in on this somehow. Heâs probably the one trying to get Saeyoung, I get that much. Omg... what if the reason they didnât find proof of Saeran being dead is because his dad snatched up the remains?! Or kidnapped him alive? Or or or
Still on the âFORGIVEâ path. This is hard. I want to be mean. đ
Episode 5
I donât know why I go into this game thinking I will just get to kiss the pretty boy. Or any boy.
Ok so more hints dropped their dad is probably involved.
âI am waiting for a letter.â GIRL, FUCK VâS LETTER. HE IS NOT HERE. SHIT IS GOING DOWN. LIVE IN THE MOMENT. IF HE WANTS TO BE OFF SMELLING FLOWERS, LET HIM. I AM TIRED.
I hope hope hope they find Saeran. Please please PLEASE.
I FORGOT. IF RAY IS ALIVE HE IS GOING THROUGH DETOX ALONE BURIED UNDER RUBBLE & ASH. I AM LIVID! WHAAAAT! SAVE. HIM.
Zenâs âWOOOOWâ made me laugh.
These new CGs are a delight. I like seeing the mix of characters in them, too. Zenâs hand is huge. ::eyes emoji::Â
Maaan, Yoosung really flipped emotional spectrums so fast about Rika. The boy is certainly driven by his emotions.
These philosophical type chats always blow me away. This game really does get you thinking about social constructs. Fun & educating. Huh.
Getting these dirty boys to wash their hands before eating.
SAERAN MADE IT OUT?!
THAT IS SAERANâS COUGH. OMG. HE IS ALIVE?!?! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! đđđđđđđđđđđđđđđđ SAERAN!!!!
Still on âFORGIVEâ path.
Episode 6
Jumin, this is a very roundabout way to tell Saeyoung you care about him & just want to look after him. You long-winded, man. I adore you.
SAEYOUNG HAS MORE VALUE THAN JUST WHAT HIS HACKING ABILITIES CAN BRING TO THE TABLE! LEAN ON YOUR FRIENDS/FAMILY, SAEYOUNG. THEY CARE FOR YOU!
10 years?! I donât know if that is a blessing or a curse. Lol. Thatâs a lengthy commitment for Saeyoung though.
âWhy must we give up one thing once we get something else?â Yeah, Cheritz. Why must we give up one boy once we save the other boy?!?! Hmmmm???? Lmaoooo
Saeyoung in a suit & tie!!!!!!! Niiiiiiice.
How in the hell are they gonna wrap up this story?! Itâs gonna be a cliffhanger isnât it?! Omg...
Did these idiots just straight up leave Zen, Yoosung, & MC in a random cabin in the woods FOR DAYS & go back to civilization on their own? How long does it take to return Rika back to proper authorizes?! Goodness.
WHAT?!
WHAAAAT THE FUCK?!?!
V TOOK SAERAN?! WHEN? HOW? WHAT?Â
MY JAW JUST POPPED IT DROPPED SO HARD. WHAT THE SHIIIIIT?!?!
Uhhhh lmao uhm why are they dressed like Jedi? Jihyun is giving Obi Wan vibes right now. Iâm cackling, when I shouldnât be. This is supposed to be a serious moment, goddamnit.
I know Jihyun probably thinks heâs doing right by taking care of Saeran but AGAIN WITH THIS DOING IT ON HIS OWN BUSINESS?! Saeyoung is devastated his brother & all the while Jihyun had actually swooped him away for some self-medicated detox tour? Just more & more secrets. Iâm tired.
âLetâs wait until detox is done & you donât wanna murder your brother. So I booked a flight for next week.â A WEEK? HA! YEAH RIGHT! BEST CANCEL THAT.
Oh, he just keeps booking & cancelling flights. Lmao. Ok. I am less judgmental now.
If Saeyoung & Saeran donât get a reunion.... I will die inside.
Unlocked the âFORGIVEâ ending.
Shit that costs 80hg too? I have nearly depleted what I had saved up!
BUT HOLY SHIT YâALL. SAERAN IS ALIVE! đđđđđđđ
âFORGIVEâ Ending
This song is hauntingly beautiful.
Who is this speaking?
Is Rika high right now wtf?!
God is a woman.
I am so over all this sun talk. Let. It. Go.
Werenât security guards left with them at the cabin?! Did Rika just WALK out?!
Of course sheâs going to run away & get away with everything. Mhmm ok.
NOW THEY ARE COMING FOR JUMINâS COMPANY?! I THOUGHT THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE GOOD END WTF. IâLL FIGHT. DONâT COME FOR C&R. IâLL THROW DOWN. JUMIN BETTER NOT LOSE EVERYTHING.
So Rika is gone & for no reason Zen & Yoosung & MC are going to stay in the cabin alone? (& not have a threesome?!?!?!)
Jumin is literally putting his own company on the line to protect Saeyoung. This man is amazing. âWeâll rebuild.â My nipples are hard. Jumin has fully aroused me. I would have taken him right on a conference table. Â
Welcome to Rikaâs Ted Talk
Well.... I am pleased she stepped up & laid the truth all out there. Took us years to get here, lads, but we did it!
Twin cribs. Hmmm.
2 YEARS LATER?! SO THIS CONNECTS TO THE GOOD END OF JIHYUNâS ROUTE?!
2 years, huh... I would have shacked up with Jumin looooong before now. That man is a whole snack. Selfless, sweet, handsome, has a cat. Iâm thirsty.
Juminâs become an alcoholic?! Great. /s I guess this is meant to show just how drastic things are? That Jumin, our token rational & logical man, is resorting to a dangerous lifestyle as a means of coping? Iâm heartbroken.
âHave I kept you waiting for too long.â Yes.
His gift better be bringing Saeran on stage because if he unveils a white puzzle I will lose my fucking mind. It is nearly 4am. I havenât slept. I just want a smooch.
Omg I think itâs happening.
Itâs gonna happen.
OMGGGGG
Please let there be a CG of this
IT HAPPENED!!!!! THEY REUNITED!!!! OMG!!!!!
LONGEST HELL YEAH BOOOOY OF MY LIFE
Pink suit pink suit pink suit PINK SUIT!!!! đ
Ohhhh... Saeran has burns all over his face & his hand. Is his whole left side burned? My poor boy.
5 years later?!? (Mmmm think about mid30s Jumin Han though đđ»đđ»đđ»đđ»)
*gasp* A BABY!
Holy shit, not a baby. A full child.
Awwww Saeyoung & Saeran live together!!
YEEESSSS. GET THIS LITTLE GIRL INTO STEM!!!!Â
âWhen is Uncle Jumin gonna marry.â I marry him every few weeks, little girl. đđ»đđ»đđ» when I reread his endings.
âDaddy thinks he will never get married.â I am now sad. I want to marry Jumin.
Jaehee got a promotion. Good for her. Itâs what she deserves.
Aw Lucy is cute. Surprised they didnât give her Jihyunâs hair color.
Their house has a lot of windows. đđđ Floor to ceiling windows. đđđ Good for fucking against. đđđđ
THIS CHILD IS ALREADY LEARNING TO KEEP SECRETS. NOOOOO. BREAK THIS CHAIN!
âDaddy is good with secrets, too.â TRUST ME, LITTLE GIRL. WE KNOW. WE KNOOOW. Yâall the noise I made when I read this line. Scoff wheezing?! Full exasperation.
âBut you tell everything to Mommy!â About fucking time, honestly. How long did it take for him to break his secrets habit?
Ohhhhh sheâs adopted! Thatâs why she doesnât have his hair color. Curious why they didnât go with the biological child path? I certainly donât mind adoption. It definitely feels like a sort of tribute to Rika.
Girl already has a crush on Zen. Ha! Giiiirl, same. Jihyunâs reaction was funny.
I wanna ride Zenâs motorcycle & his diiiiiiiii
7 years later & Yoosung is still addicted to LOLOL. Keep it up, Yoosung. Live your best gaming life.
Now sheâs plotting murder against her own dad. Goodness. & Yoosung just TOLD her this entire dark plot of the game. Lmaooooo
What happened to Vanderwood? Did he accept working at C&R? How is he? Is he eating? Did he take a vacation away from Saeyoung? I need to know.
Jihyunâs speech to his wife is sweet. Now kiss!
Omg I canât believe I didnât get to smooch him at all. What.
What.
100 HOURGLASSES TO RESET?!?! HIGHWAY ROBBERY! I need to save up all over again for when (if) they drop a Saeran After End
âJUDGEâ Ending
No, going back to the place you hate most isnât a sufficient form of punishment for the crimes youâve committed. You canât just punish yourself & call it justice. Thank u, next.
Why the fuck is Rika called Serena now?! How many names does she have?!Â
Is Rika really free & just doing her own apology tour?! No trial or hospital involved? Iâm????
Yoosungâs dialogue makes it seem like he still wants Rika around. Flip flop.Â
I do enjoy that Yoosung is a very emotional character, even if sometimes in the stories I donât agree with him. Heâs always very open & honest with how he feels, even if taken to extremes.
Jaeheeâs discussion with Rika was very rational. As expected.
Damn Zen gave her the boot double quick.
Jumin: âYou are a minus given a breathing body.â Ohhhhhhh my god. đźđźđź & he told her he wants her sent to a lab to have data collected from her. Jumin is ANGRY.
So this discussion with Saeran is meant to be in her own head, yeah?
Ok her discussion with Saeyoung felt real -ish again but then her discussion with Jihyun sounded bizarre & far-fetched again. So has she just been inside her own head this entire time?
What the fuck... is going on.
Wow, letâs toss in some sexual assault via clergymen to spice things up. Alright. /s What the hell is this?
This ending is fucking bonkers
Omg Zenâs robotic reply made me lose my shit. First time Iâve laughed because of this ending.
Poor Vanderwood. He sounded excited to have a line.
Sooo... the ending has just been a mock of how a Rika route would have gone if she had one?
Wait this was all just MCâs dream?! Rikaâs dream?
& now Rika is in a coma?!? What? What???!! Iâm... tired.
You know what, at least Saeyoung & Saeran are back together. Silver lining. The only silver lining to this madness.
Yoosung got a whole new look again. Iâll admit, for a hot second I thought he had become a cult leader & I was worried.
Sooo... the RFA became some sort of support group for Rikaâs victims?????
Jumin doesnât want to be a part of the meetings because he doesnât particularly subscribe to their efficiency. Zen just doesnât want to be involved because he doesnât want the reminder. Jihyun basically just didnât show up. So is this to mean the RFA has fallen apart entirely? Rename the group, change your ideals, be more open with each other, & formulate new ways to create charity events/fundraisers. Find a new purpose together! PULL. YOURSELVES. TOGETHER.
Ugh. Ugggghhhhhhh.
So, Iâve sat on this for a little under 24 hours. I let it sink in, in hopes that I could make better sense of it. But honestly, I donât feel like I have. I feel perhaps this after end should have been listed in a separate section like the secret endings. These episodes certainly read more like a secret ending.
Rather than call this âVâs After Endâ I think it would make more sense to have called this âVâs Route After Endâ (or even âRikaâs After Endâ). This ending felt more like a means of giving closure to the route itself, rather than an acknowledgement of Jihyunâs relationship with MC. We were shown Saeran was alive, we were given Saeyoung & Saeran reunited with one another finally, we got answers as to what happened with Rika & how she ended up in Alaska, we found out why Jihyun was really away for two years, we had Saeyoung & Saeran stepping out from the hunting shadow of their father. Questions were answered, resolutions of sorts were given.
When I think of âafter endâ Iâll admit, I assumed we would be given a short snippet of story revolving primarily around Jihyun & MC post-good end, like we had for the other characters; not this dramatic saga between the end of the route & before Jihyun returns two years later.Â
Jihyunâs route revolved around him understanding his relationship with Rika & then distancing himself from that & trying to find himself. His route felt like it had more Jihyun x Rika content than it did Jihyun x MC content. This After End there was hardly any Jihyun x MC content as he was gone essentially the entire time. He really Noped Out of his own After End; Iâm still a bit shocked I paid so many hourglasses for V content.... only to not be given V content. I admit, I feel foolish & cheated, somehow. I went in hoping for more content about a character I was interested in, only to be given this dramatic story revolving around a character I donât particularly care for.
Iâm disappointed that there is a Forgive or Judge aspect to this ending.Â
In the Forgive path/end, the blame of Rikaâs crimes & actions is pinned on Rikaâs mental illness, choice individuals swaying her into taking particular actions (Â âembrace your devilâ ), and various circumstances sheâs had to endure & live through. By introducing this new character (Mika?), are we meant to blame her instead of Rika? Is she a scapegoat since the idea was originally hers & not Rikaâs, even though Rika was the one that enacted everything? On top of this, Yoosung is shown to be reading a psychology book & also comes to the conclusion that what Rika has done isnât really her fault, but the fault of her circumstances. All of this feels like we were being ushered into forgiving Rika and feeling guilty if we donât. Provided you do choose to forgive Rika, she finds her own inner happiness, becomes âher own sunâ, and goes off to live her life in Alaska; no consequences aside from distance (physical & emotionally) from her once friends/family & developing a negative public appeal. This forgive path directly ties in with Jihyunâs good end, implying itâs the better (intended?) ending. That doesnât sit well with me. MC shouldnât have to forgive their captor & tormentor in order to achieve their own âgoodâ end.Â
In the Judge path/end, the other characters often show hesitancy when MC expresses she will never be able to forgive Rika. There are philosophical chats about what is actually good vs bad, what is just, & who is to decide these sort of standards. We are led to question if holding on to a grudge hurts ourselves or the other party more. And in the end, when we choose to judge Rika, the RFA falls apart; everyone is miserable. Again, the reader is left feeling as if their judgement was too harsh, too cruel, or uncalled for as the consequences of it have seeped out & negatively touched other people. Rika falls into a coma â doesnât go off to live her life in Alaska, doesnât find her own inner peace â & this is all because she was blamed or shunned for her actions, as opposed to being forgiven. Why does everyoneâs happiness depend on MC forgiving her captor? It all left a sour taste in my mouth.
I understand the discussion of what is truly good vs bad or what is meant to be just & unjust can go fairly deep, but I feel that discussion applies only to circumstances that are in a grey area. What Rika did (attempted murder, abuse, emotional & physical manipulation, drugging/brainwashing) is clear cut wrong. There is no question that these are bad decisions. It should not be up for debate whether these sorts of actions are âgood or bad.â While I do not deny that Rikaâs past (whatever it fully may be as I have not read her backstory DLC) has attributed to her behaviors, it does not excuse them. I believe that mental illness does not excuse someoneâs actions.
These are two very extreme endings - either Rika gets off free from her actions or she becomes comatose & succumbs to a darkness. Why have these drastic differences when you can merge the two; have Rika go through treatment to help her, serve a punishment that is fitting of her crimes, help her grow & understand, then have forgiveness come later? There were several options within gameplay along the lines of âI hope one day I can forgive herâ & âI hope she finds her peace.â I see nothing wrong with not having MC forgive Rika but still wish for progress to be made.
Everyone was happier in the end where you forgave Rika, though. And isnât that what everyone wanted in the end?
Overall, I didnât mind Yoosung & Zen portraying the voices that provide the philosophical discussions in the routes and this After End. In fact, I enjoyed the chats with them as I tend to find philosophical discussions thought provoking, even if I do not always agree with what these characters were expressing. While MM is marketed as a visual novel romance, it has never shied away from delving into deeper topics & oftentimes tries to provide a lesson. Perhaps this time, the lesson they hoped to get across, didnât hit the mark with me.
Yoosungâs emotions were very extreme in this After End. I have come to expect Yoosung being very up front, unapologetic, & pushy with his feelings. In a game where so many characters are often keeping secrets, itâs almost refreshing to have a character that is so viscerally open. Personally, I found it interesting that Yoosungâs feeling towards Rika had flipped so drastically. It was almost as if he was now trying to overcompensate for his previous idolization of her.Â
Iâm still of the opinion that the world does not deserve Jumin Han. Through his own pain & suffering, through dealing with the disappearance of his dearest friend, through having to come to terms with the fact that a woman he once considered a close friend turned out to be someone so villainous, he has stepped up & even at one point risked his own company, reputation, & livelihood to protect someone he now considered family. He used his time & resources to help as much as he could. He sat & genuinely listened to Saeyoung & calmly gave input despite Saeyoung verbally lashing out at him. Iâll admit I hated that Jumin seemingly became an alcoholic, or at least heavily dependent on wine, during the stretch of time these After Ends covered. He was suffering, but because he needed to keep his shit together, he used liquor as his means of turning off his brain so he wouldnât think too heavily about what was happening, otherwise heâd spiral. You can bet your ass that every time there was an option to choose âHow is Jumin doing?â I took it, because this man needs someone to look out for him while heâs busy looking after everyone else. I love him. He remains my favorite.Â
I am thrilled Saeran is alive. I am ecstatic Saeyoung & Saeran got the reunion I had been hoping for (& in both endings!). The doctor part of me really wishes his treatment & recovery occurred in a hospital, instead of some nature tour with Jihyun while wearing Jedi robes, but beggars canât be choosers in fiction, I suppose. I am glad Saeran is safe, recovering, had the time to heal his relationship with Jihyun, & is living with Saeyoung now. Itâs what I wanted for him.
On one hand, I can see why Jihyun kept Saeran being alive a secret (Saeran wasnât ready to see Saeyoung yet, he was detoxing, he needed more recovery time, he needed the peace away from everything, if Saeyoung knew he would have gone after them immediately rather than wait for some time to pass) but on the other hand, I had had enough of the secrets. I am glad though that the story allowed for Saeyoung to have some hope that Saeran was alive. If the narrative had left no suggestion of hope & Saeyoung had fallen into a depression of sorts, then I feel when Saeran was finally revealed he [Saeyoung] may have not handled it as well. But Saeyoung was given a chance to hope, to grow, to finally relax/settle where he was, & was allowed time himself to recover from everything that happened, which I think helped in how he received Saeranâs reappearance.
Definitive proof that Vanderwood has grown to care about Saeyoung as a person?! Sign me the fuck up. That was amazing. I greatly enjoy Vanderwood.
With Saeyoung, I did enjoy seeing his range of emotion & reactions to this entire ordeal. He was desvasted, broken, distraught, angry. My heart went out to him & I felt his pain. His monologues were great. His reactions felt real. It was a bit jarring to see how readily he was contemplating suicide & how quickly he cast that aside as soon as some other bit of info to cling to came along. I understand, though, that this story took place in a short amount of time & the creators were trying to portray his progression in the time they had. I am tickled that he was offered a 10 year contract with C&R & that he readily accepted. I have enjoyed seeing him begin to accept that he can plant roots somewhere, open up to those around him, & not fear that heâll one day have to leave.
I was originally miffed that Jihyun went off for two years on his own, seemingly to get over Rika, making MC wait around, before he could commit himself to MC. Knowing now that those two years were actually spent helping to rehabilitate Saeran in seclusion, I am assuaged. A bit.
I am, however, left feeling as though maybe MC isnât meant to be with Jihyun. Iâve certainly felt as if there is more push to have Jihyun x Rika remain together as Cheritz still doesnât give, what I would consider, adequate bonding & development between Jihyun x MC (not that 11 days of story in any of the routes could be described as adequate bonding time, lolol). Majority of Jihyunâs scenes (in his route) are about him reminiscing about his past with Rika, rather than discussions that may cultivation a budding relationship with MC. I like Jihyun, but it feels likes itâs been made intentionally hard to romance him. Maybe it was naive of me to hope we would get cute scenes of Jihyun & MC getting to know one another more, or be shown ways Jihyun made it up to MC for being gone for so long, or even a mini date story, or actually seeing the proposal happen, or even a kiss? But I did hope for all of that, so I canât pretend Iâm not sad we didnât getting to see it. The romance between Jihyun & MC feels brushed aside, like an afterthought, & I was hoping that this After End would finally put it at the forefront of the story told.
While I donât like how the situation with Rika was handled in either route, & while this After End was not at all what I was expecting (I just wanted to kiss Jihyun, omg), it wasnât a total loss for me since the twins are reunited & happy, which I think may have been my biggest wish. The voice acting as phenomenal & I can tell how much time & effort Cheritz put into creating this mammoth, complex & thought-provoking story. Iâll be honest & admit that I am upset I spent so many hourglasses for content that seemed packaged as Jihyun content but turned out to be more about Rika, but nothing can be done about that now.Â
If I had to pick an ending I preferred, it would definitely be the Forgive End, as there is more happiness for everyone I care about when it concludes. It was nice seeing Jihyun & MC have their little family, even if it was a very brief interaction. Their adoption of a little girl feels like a nod to Rika, of sorts. Perhaps that isnât what Cheritz intended, & maybe there is no hidden meaning to why they adopted at all, but I am happy to see Jihyun & MC having brought a child into their home to create a family with.
The CGs are beautiful. Is there even a way to unlock the title page Jihyun proposal CG? I didnât get it in my play-through at all.Â
I didnât hate this After End, but I definitely didnât love it either. I guess it kind of falls in a strange floaty grey middle area for me, somewhat flat. Hopefully many of yâall enjoyed it! I look forward to seeing what they may give us for Saeranâs After End. I have a feeling that may be a wild story too.

Welcome Back Everyone!
Thank @daiskken for this week's artwork! I really love the style of this picture.
As I was not the biggest fan of last weekâs episode and had every intention of wiping it entirely from my memory, this week, we are going to do something a little different. Instead of a recap of last week, we are going to focus on:
Briefcap Beach Party
Consolidated lingering Questions The Steven Universe World Characters Places Things Likes and Dislikes So Far Briefcap from Steven Universe: Beach Party (S1:Ep18)
Beach Party opens with the Gems fighting a Blowfish. Steven throws his boogie board to try to distract it for Garnet. Garnet gets blown into town where she destroys the front of the pizzeria. Amethyst turns into a baseball bat and hits the blowfish out to the ocean. The Gems argue with each other. Mr. Pizza gets upset about the pizzeria. The Gems go home. Kofi tells Steven the Gems are banned. He goes home to tell them because he's so sad.
Steven sets up a really boring beach party to bring the Pizzas and Gems together. The Gems dress appropriately at Steven's behest. He pairs up the Gems with Pizzas for a volleyball game that dwindles into a cheating match. . . . I told some jokes.
The blowfish returns and Nanafua directs everybody through a really ridiculous fight and the blowfish is defeated. Kofi wraps up the episode faster than Dumbledore wrapped up the Sorcerer's Stone and about as haphazardly.
AND . . . Episode Over (thank goodness)
Episode Random Noticings
Fish Stew Pizza never got fixed.
Fish Stew Pizza still sounds disgusting.
Nanafua is commanding and the Gems are oddly compliant.
Consolidated lingering Questions
The Gems:
Where do they come from? How is power derived from them? Are all the gems the same, but act differently according to⊠something? How is magic embued into the gems? Who is chosen to wear them and why? Why is a pearl considered a gem? What about the gemmed enemies? How do they get gems? Or are they created out of gems? Assumption: each has unique powers, i.e., Amethyst canât project a plan from her gem_ If the above assumption is correct, what exactly is Garnetâs superpower? What are Steven's powers? s Amethyst's strange relationship with gravity a po Who all can fu?se?w old are each of them? Itâs suggested that they're centuries old. Amethyst acts a bit like a teenager. Is she that much younger than Pearl? Where does Garnet fall? Why is Steven the only boy? How many boy gems are there everywhere? Why is Garnet the boss? Is it because she's older and wiser?
The World:
The Lunar Sea Spire was known as the Oasis for Gems on Earth, so I know itâs Earth, but⊠Is it in the same Earth that we are in, but hidden from us, or some sort of alternate universe Are the gems ONLY on Earth? This would make the nomenclature Oasis for Gems on Earth redundant, so probably notar, everything seems to be happening in this town⊠are there other Gems in other towns? Like every town has a team of Crystal Gems protecting it? Or is this town some center for universal negativity, so the Gems are focused here? Why do people in anime scream out the names of their attacks? Where did Lion take Steven and Connie for training? Is that place, or a similar one, available to all gems? Do you need a familiar to take you there?
The House on the Beach:
This is more a curiosity, but I wouldnât mind seeing the fight that took off that statues hands What is up with the living temple inside the house? Beating hearts, waterfalls, a pool for getting rid of evil spirits. Need much more history and understanding here. BTW, it's been more than 10 episodes and none of these have been answered. Why not? The Steven Universe World This is just a quick list of things that make this place unique⊠no explanations.
Townies:
What's up with Onion and his dad? Are they from some other place? Why would you make a place called Fish Stew Pizza? What is the name of the fry place?
Rose Quartz:
Why does Rose have to die to give Steven his superpowers? Is Rose even dead?? I donât remember that explicitly being stated What would make her choose that? a prophesy? desire to give Greg a kid? gonna die anyway? Did she give up her gem to HAVE a kid or to EMBUE a kid with the gem? Did she get to KNOW Steven?
Lion:
What all does Lion know? How did he get his powers?

Likes and Dislikes Far
Dislikes
Not a fan of the important role junk food plays in the show I donât relate to Steven much. He mostly annoys me. Why is there not a main antagonist? Are we going to be playing monster of the week forever? Surely weâll get one antagonist we can loath⊠(this is still an issue 18 episodes in. . . ) Season 1: Episode 5 Frybo Season 1: Episode 18 Beach Party
Likes
I like that all the answers to everything are not conveniently packaged in an episode I like Garnet⊠and sometimes Amethyst⊠and I often relate to Pearl I like Greg and his super awesome van I like that it seemed like we landed in the middle of a life, rather than the beginning of a story. . . this continues to be true through every episode. I like the most of the townspeople and their relationships with Steven I appreciate that though there are some references a kid wouldnât understand completely, there is so far no blatantly adult humor or sexuality even in undertones - still true after 18 episodes. . . I like the whole living temple thing - but it is frustrating that we have only explored it once and so many questions remain. I like Connie alot. She is funny and smart and a perfect non-super for the story. I like the random swords sticking up in multiple places. I like arcade games. . . I like that there are so many details in the background like everywhere . . . and it's obvious the creators are nerds I like Sour Cream
I just want to remind everyone, I write these recaps after having only seen the episode once, a week ago, and often interrupted by my whole blogging thing. I mainly do it for myself to refresh my memory for the next episode, but since I post it, I thought I should ask your forgiveness if it isnât exactly perfect (or even close). Don't forget if you have a submission for artwork for today's episode, submit before Friday using the link above, and I'll pick one to use as the cover art.
