one of the things i've been frustrated with when running this blog is the lack of Native actors among all the hotties I showcase. so I was extra delighted to see this article in the New York Times, covering the career of stage actress Go-won-go Mohawk! while she didn't apparently work in films, she was an accomplished actress and playwright in the late 1800s who created her own plays where she dressed in drag and told stories of Native heroism. A very cool read, and an interesting lady to know about.
Here's a gift article on her that shouldn't be behind a paywall!

if you're feeling powerless right now—and god knows I am—here's a reminder you can donate to the National Network of Abortion Funds, the Trans Law Center, Gaza Soup Kitchen, the Palestine Children's Relief Fund, and hundreds of other charities that will work to mitigate the damage that has been and will continue to be inflicted
life continues. we still have the capacity to do good, important work. that matters

I'm going to gatekeep some podcasters and say that if you think Strange Fruit sung by Billie Holiday is "an old spiritual" then I don't think you are the right person to be giving commentary on Tales from the Hood.

Over the years, I've had to watch as people I used to love and be close to grew more and more conservative politically, and I'm stuck in a culture that views becoming more conservative with age as a part of "growing up". My mom used to say that "liberals" (i.e. anybody who's to the left politically) are like children throwing a fit about not getting what they want, and conservatives are the mature parental figures telling them "no".
The infantilization of Leftists is an easy way the right-wing talking heads can make Authoritarian political structures seem more appealing to older people who still love reminiscing about the "good old days", back when kids were beaten with a paddle or a belt and learned to associate discipline with fear and compliance. The words "spoiled", "entitled", and the like are used so commonly for this reason. If anybody who wants equity and justice for those marginalized by society, they're portrayed as immature.
I've had to sit and watch with a sense of sorrow as people I used to be good friends with turned into Fundamentalists, bootlickers, transphobes, etc. or morph into "blue no matter who" types who act like you're absolute scum if you don't like the Democratic party. Both are just different flavors of the Authoritarian Right that plagues US politics. At 36 years old, I still want nothing to do with it. If anything, I've drifted even further left with age. I'm angrier than I ever have been, because things in this country keep getting worse.
If wanting a more just and less cruel world for everyone means I'm mentally stuck in my teen years, so be it. If I'm going to be framed as a spoiled brat, then I'm going to yell like one on behalf of those who can't even yell at all, and yes, I'm also going to yell for the respect and safety that I deserve, too. Nobody has the right to make me or any other Leftist feel lesser than on a measuring rod for mental maturity. I also have the right to cut ties with anyone whose sociopolitical views are outright harmful. They can be "grown up" far away from me.
