And there you go sweetface” Ian dusted off Ruby’s pillow trying to flash her the most supportive smile he could muster. In all honesty, he felt terrible for his poor girl.

He had been trying his hardest all afternoon to try to get her to at least crack a smile. Beside the embarrassed blush and flustered grin she sported when Ian pulled out a picture of her and the boy she liked from behind the dress earlier- If he could count that as a smile. Ruby was stone-faced. He didn’t blame her.

Ruby had recently torn her ACL in a pretty traumatic way. She had been suffering from leg pain prior to the incident for about a month. But her being Ruby, she brushed it off as much as she could, told no one that, hid that she grimaced any time she took a step. She took baths, rubbed herself with Bengay and Epson salt, literally everything she could in an attempt to try and heal herself. None of it worked so she just pushed her attention elsewhere, not to put emphasis on her pain.

She couldn’t think of the pain. It was finally competition season again. She had started track and field the year prior and absolutely adored it. She had been looking forward to running again more than anything. Especially since her coach was confident that she was gonna set records for both sprinting and long-distance. Ruby was ecstatic and took the words of praise as a challenge. She had always been confident, maybe a little too much so, but still, she was ready to win. Trained her ass off to assure as much.

2023 Year In Review

I first did this post last year after getting back into the swing of fandom and thought it would be cool to see what a difference another year has made. This year saw the creation of the @jilymicrofics & @jilymicro-oops blogs respectively, which will have their own review post in due course. Looking back I once again managed more than I thought I did this year.

Anyways, the prompt was: Steve, Tony and Bucky together with Bucky as a ler, Steve a switch and tony a lee.

Two pairs of pounding footsteps approached the couch where Tony Stark lay sleeping, quickly followed by a thud as a certain captain was tackled to the ground. Giggles filled the air as Bucky straddled the war hero, and proceeded to conduct a thorough, hands-on examination of Steve’s ribs and tummy. 

“NOHOHO BUHUHUCK PLEHEHEASE!” He managed to squeal out as the winter soldier drew a breath, and raspberried it into Steve’s bellybutton.

Tony rubbed his eyes, opening his mouth to begin complaining about the noise, when he realised what he two were doing. A light blush rose to his cheeks as he watched Steve beg under Bucky’s careful fingertips, a fate he wouldn’t exactly oppose being subjected to (though he would never admit it).

Bucky, who had been grinning at Steve’s humongous smile during the predicament, noticed the attention the pair were receiving, and gave Tony a wink. Steve twisted and squirmed beneath his friend, feebly fighting against the two hands running up and down his sides, before taking in a deep breath of air as the tickling subsided.

“What’s with the red face, huh Tony?” The winter soldier smirked, while Steve recovered, muttering something about Bucky’s arm being an unfair advantage.

The billionaire stumbled over his words, responded much too quickly with “Nothing!”, before composing himself.

“You two woke me up with your… uh… shenanigans…”

Steve, who by this point had gotten his breath back, grinned up at him. 

“I think someone’s in need of an attitude adjustment, eh Buck?”

“Couldn’t agree more.” Bucky smirked, grabbing Tony before he had a chance to escape.

“No no no no come on guys I-”

“You what? Huh? You… ’re way too ticklish?” The winter soldier teased, wriggling his fingers in the air above the helpless man.

Tony stuttered, giving a few nervous laughs. 

“Or were you waiting for this to happen huh? Itching for some tickles Stark?” Steve brushed his hand against the genius’s neck, drawing out a yelp.

At this point, Tony’s face was a deep crimson, and he couldn’t bear to look at either man in the eyes. He slammed his eyelids shut, awaiting the fate he was doomed to endure for as long as the tormentors desired.

Then the fingers hit.

Tony let out a shriek, then broke down into giggles as Steve attacked his ribs, while Bucky repeatedly squeezed the spot just above his kneecaps, before sprawling his fingers over them.

The normally suave, composed philanthropist, was now squirming and begging at the mercy of two of his closest friends. His entire nervous system was overloaded, he couldn’t think straight, never mind form coherent words. All he could do was scrunch his face up and laugh hysterically, and that’s what he did.

“Really? This is what it takes to take down Earth’s greatest defender?” Steve chuckled as he drilled his thumbs into Tony’s armpits.

After a yelp, Tony managed to giggle out a “Shuhuut up Rogers!”, before descending into mirthful madness.

What felt like both forever and a split second passed, before the two torturers receded their fingers and allowed Tony some breathing room.

“You guys *pant*… such jerks…” He forced his mouth into a hybrid of frowning and pouting.

Steve and Bucky looked at each other, before simultaneously giving Tony a shit-eating grin.

“You need to laugh more Tone.” Steve patted the man on the back, chuckling when the billionaire flinched away.

Once the pair had left the room, Tony relaxed. Allowing his smile to reflect his enjoyment of the events which had just taken place. The tickling had been absolutely torturous, and on one hand Tony couldn’t stand even the thought of going through that again. 

But on the other, he had loved every second.

Finished Fic: Starvation Paradise

And it's done! You guys, this fic took me TWO AND A HALF YEARS but hey who's counting? 80,000 words of blood, sweat, and tears, and for the most part I mean those of the characters. As one reader put it, "If you enjoy near-constant suffering with copious amounts of character development and pining and the occasional sex scene in a cave or natural spring, this fic is for you."

I really ought to do something nice for Asami and Iroh after this.

Title: Starvation Paradise Fandom: Avatar: Legend of Korra Summary: A drunken accident leaves General Iroh and Asami Sato stranded somewhere in the frozen north. The oasis they find is their salvation, but as long as winter lasts, it is also their prison. As hopes of rescue wither and die, they must use what they have to survive. Or not. Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Injuries, Mild Sexual Content, Animal Harm Characters: General Iroh II, Asami Sato, minor appearances of others Pairings: Iroh II/Asami Sato When I Started: This fic was originally started for the @avatar-rare-pair-ship-challenge prompt "Seasons" in April 2021. You know, yesterday. How I Lost My Shit: At one point I let this story get too big in my head and then got a bit paralyzed by the level of ambition. I also wasn't quite sure how I wanted to end it. Those factors, plus life and 115 other fanfics, put it on the back burner for far too long in spite of the fact that it's always been one of my favorites. How I Finished My Shit: IRL I'm extremely motivated by deadlines and the idea of disappointing other people. Getting an artist with a posting date and knowing they'd be left holding the bag if I didn't finish was incredibly helpful. I've also been cheered on by a few very loyal readers and friends (@myargalargan, @yellowsalt3 and @badlucksav in particular) without whom I'd almost certainly never have completed this story. Love you ladies. Finally, I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the @wipbigbang for giving me the structure and motivation to finish this fic, and to Doughrito Art for the beautiful cover art that to me perfectly captures the spirit of the story. End of Year Book Tag

With the end of the year approaching, I've seen a few people on youtube doing this End of Year tag and I thought it'd be fun to do it too, as a kind of followup to the mid year freak out tag. I've adapted the questions a little based on a couple different versions I've seen but I believe the original tag was made by Ariel Bissett. Anyway, onto the questions!

I am definitely on track for my 2024 reading goal! This year I set a goal of 40 books and as of today (Nov 2) I am sitting at 38 read which I am obviously stoked with. I am a little behind on the Read Christie challenge this year but only by 4 books so I shouldn't have any trouble finishing the challenge.

What I am behind on is posting about what I've read (oopsie) so I defs want to try and get caught up before too long.

(Originally this prompt specified an autumnal/winter read but I live in Australia and we're entering summer so I changed the wording a little.)

I don't often pick books based on the season but this year I do actually have a couple of summery reads that I'd like to get to. The first is Every Time I Go On Vacation Someone Dies by Catherine Mack. The other is Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret by Benjamin Stevenson which it the third in his Australia set mystery series so I'm assuming it'll take place in the summer too lmao.

If you'd asked me last week I would have had a few titles on my list but currently there's only one. Ghosts: Brought To Life was released in October and I have ordered it so I'm just waiting for it to arrive.

Oh I have so many more than three lmao but the one's I'm focusing on most are the Agatha Christie's I have left to read - Hickory Dickory Dock (which I just started today), The Mirror Crack'd From Side to Side, Third Girl, and Passenger To Frankfurt. Aside from them I also have a few books I'd like to get to if possible just to tick off challenges I've been doing through the year (namely the Buzzword-a-thon and a bingo board I made in my reading journal). So that includes Artemis by Andy Weir, Not Now Not Ever by Julia Gillard, and There Should Have Been Eight by Nalini Singh, amongst others.

Absolutely. Most of my five stars this year were re-reads and, honestly, nothing stands out as my absolute fave at the moment, so there's defs a possibility. I think maybe the most likely would be Every Time I Go On Vacation if I get to it before the end of the year.

Nothing solid yet. I will be doing the Read Christie challenge again next year (although I'm getting close to having read all of them so I may have to stretch some prompts to get to everything lmao)

The other thing I've kind of had at the back of my mind is to move my Frankenstein thing I've been doing in October to a different month next year, maybe something around the april/may/june/july part of the year. This year October's reading did not go as planned, I spent 3/4 of the month reading and annotating Emma and then only got through one Frankenstein related book. October tends to be an especially busy time of the year for me with work and I usually have to read the book I'm annotating to exchange with Lauren around that time too. Plus the weather doesn't really give the right vibe. I don't celebrate Halloween so I didn't time it to coincide with that when I started doing it, it was just coincidence, so there's really no reason to keep in in October. But I am thinking of maybe making a lil mini bingo board or something for anyone who wants to join in on it. idk it's all very much just a vague idea in the back of my head right now.

Bucky Barnes Connect Four - Alt Jun-iverse [BBC4_R2]  {Ends June 2024}

The good folks over at @buckybarnesevents  have opened this event up early!  You sign up for a single row card of four squares and the challenge is to see if you can combine any/all into a single Bucky-centric AU fanwork - although you can also create 2-4 separate fanworks if you want.  

The combo of prompts on my first card [Reality Show,  Omegaverse, Talent/Manager, Royalty] sparked an idea that I’m about 230 words + misc notes into already -  Alpha!Bucky as a technical prince   who gets talked into joining a reality show that is supposed to match him up with an omega… but there’s a twist!  Planning to pick this back up in the next week or so.

Intentions vs Result - I started the year intending to do 'fandom friday' (aka a gifset every friday) and I missed a couple of weeks around April and then I just quit completely and haven't made a gifset since May. I got tired, I got busy, I moved house and the year disappeared. I did get a fair few sets done though and I feel like I got a lot of my system (even if I still have ideas for sets on my list).

- Mid-April I declared my intention to quit fanfic and I said "my mission if I choose to accept it" was to spend the rest of the year writing every idea on my list. However, due to the aforementioned moving house I fell off the writing wagon completely thanks to the stress. Then once I had moved house that felt like a clean break and so I just decided to stop with the fanfic. I have WIPs on my HD but I had posted all my current fic, so it's not like I left anything exactly, but I am still sad. All those ideas that I love that will now never become reality.

- Art is my old nemesis. As always I wanted to do so much more but with the whole moving thing, I am probably lucky I did anything. I am intending to do a LOT more next year so cross fingers on that.

2022 Fanfic - Dancing on Broken Glass (2,266 words, Star Trek: Picard Seven/Raffi) aka the 'oh no' fic because oops I entered another fandom. I just reached this episode and I hit peak shipper level and just had to go for it. It wouldn't leave me alone. I have feelings about these two. Even though I haven't created much for them due to life, they live rent free in my head.

- Odyssey: Future's Legacy (84,274 words, Sanctuary/Warehouse 13 crossover) I have to be honest this was the fic that made me question what I was doing with my life. 84k - that's a novel. Now don't get me wrong I am a huge supporter of fanfic. It has kept me sane, it has kept me writing, it has given me so much. But I have dreams and sort of realised that I wouldn't get to the life I wanted to live writing fics like this - however much I genuinely enjoyed writing it. Crossovers are basically self-indulgent. I am my own reader and yeah it was fun :)

- We Belong to the Future (4,837 words, The Librarians) Written for prompt month. I intended to do so much more but this was middle of house buying, and I basically shutdown from the stress. This was the only fic/thing I did for prompt month this year. I am sad about that, especially because this fic is unbearably sad. I made myself cry. Clearly I was in a morose mood, I apologise.

- Time Will Tell (43,259 words, Sanctuary James/John/Helen) aka the Soulmate AU. I didn't know this would be my last fic with them, I have so many more ideas. Still I do like this one, I even indulged myself with an epilogue of the changed future. I do like my happy endings :)

2022 Fanart - Dancing in a Galaxy of their own Seven and Raffi, Star Trek: Picard. I guess this could be a companion to the fic I wrote as it's basically the same scene. I will be forever bitter that Seven and Raffi didn't dance at the gala in season two - so I made it happen in fic and in art. This is a digital drawing and it's terrible but it was driven by passion for the ship. I just had to make it exist. - Winter Advent 22 The Amanda Tapping discord server did a "12 days of Advent fan-mas" kind of thing and I signed up for the 21st. This was my entry. Total mixed media project. Done primarily with watercolour and regular coloured pencils but a few markers were thrown in here and there. I'm moving over to traditional art thanks to the whole depressing AI art thing. I've been trying to get better at drawing for years and now a computer comes along and does it 10x better than me and in an instant? Maybe with a pencil I will remain relevant for a little while longer - I hope. Anyway, it's not great but I tried.

Super Secret Mystery Project: closer and closer to being done! I'm estimating I have about 25% left to write? But let's be real...numbers are not my strong suit. I'm not entirely sure words are my strong suit, either, and yet here we are! I'm still hacking away at it. Pulling my hair out over it, the usual. I basically spend the work week sobbing and whining about it on my lonesome so that I feel refreshed enough to actually write on the weekend. So yeah. It's a nightmare but I see the light! (Also: I love it so much.)

Snarry Kinkuary fic: 1 done! To be posted on the 14th if I don't chicken out!

Riddledore Kinkuary fic: rough draft done. Just needs a bit of a shine, but I've got time. To be posted on the 27th!

Snarry Kinkuary/Kinktober fic: potential sequel to Obscene in the works! I'll post it for the nearest kink-event whenever I finish it. With luck that'll be this month, but I really gotta minimize my stress!

Other Kinkuary fics: tentative ideas for a Draco/Sirius fic. The barest scribbles of ideas for Ginny/Gwenog, Ginny/Rolanda, and/or Hermione/Lavender fics. But again, no stress allowed! (Or so I tell myself over and over and over just in case it actually sticks one day.)

Year of the OTP: no firm plans, but a determination to write a Snarry for each month of the year, per the YOTP prompts. If I can't actually manage, I suppose it will be okay. But it's very low stress I think! Surely I can manage at least a drabble a month, right...? (Let me not hold my breath on that one.)

Snarry Bang: a few ideas I need to compile and run by my teammate...cuz I'm not really sure I can resist the allure of Snarry Bang.

Lavmione: I really wanna write a Lavmione fic this year. A work with more character and meat to it than Kinkuary is really calling for. I don't know that it will be long, per se, or what it will be about, I am just having a lot of Lavmione feelings rn and I think they'll have to come out sooner or later. Potentially Maytime for a few events...

Magic in the Stars: need to edit a few more astrology essays to post on AO3 around the start of April! Not a high priority, but definitely on my to-do list. (Realistically once I start I won't want to stop until I finish.)

Other stuff...maybe I'll finish my Dralbus fic this year! And the sequel to The Christmas Prince. Oh and my Scarry fic. And another Yes, Daddy fic that's been a WIP for way too long. And Merlin only knows what other bright ideas I'll have before the end of the year...

HP Chan fest: set to wrap up at the end of winter! It's been pretty chill and it helps to have an awesome co-mod! And on March 7 my 2 very questionable/problematic fics will go out to my poor subscribers, mwahahahaha. 😏

HP Fruit Fest: and as one fest ends, another will begin. Currently working on getting HP Fruit fest set up to run through spring! Doing this one solo (unless anyone wants to volunteer to help.) Another one designed to be chill because we all deserve a nice chill fruit I mean fest, right?

Okay since I have one wintertime fest and one springtime fest...do I need to come up with fests for the other 2 seasons, too? 🤔 Oh no why did I have to have that thought? Someone stop me!

The train’s whistle blares, signaling impending departure. The platform is steadily emptying as students hustle onto the Express, shouting and waving over their shoulders. Harry lifts a hand to cradle his aching head, coughing as he inhales steam pouring from the train’s undercarriage, and pulls his coat tightly around him. His New Year’s hangover hasn’t quite left him.

“I’m going to miss it, Uncle Harry! Come on!” Rose tugs him along, and Harry drags his feet, letting his body sag heavily. He chuckles when she huffs and rolls her eyes, looking so like her mother it makes Harry’s smile widen.

“You aren’t going to miss anything, Rosie. Have you got everything?”

“Yes, yes, I’ve got everything, now let’s go!”

He pulls her into a hug, pressing his lips to the top of her head and closing his eyes for a long moment.” I’m going to miss y—oof!”

“Sorry!” a small voice calls as Harry tries to keep his balance. He turns to see a child, about Rose’s age, hurtling away from him down the platform.

“Terribly sorry, are you alright? My son seems to have forgotten his manners,” a much deeper voice says from behind him. Harry freezes. He feels Rose squirm in his tight hold, but he can’t seem to let go. “Scorpius! Come back and apo—Oh. Potter.”

“Malfoy.”

Harry gazes into a face he hasn’t seen for nearly two decades. A surprisingly handsome face. Harry waits for the wave of bitter feeling to roll through him, but…it doesn’t.

The title of this story is taken from Sonnet 97: How like a winter hath my absence been by William Shakespeare. The story will unfold in real-time over the course of the year (as in, the same amount of time will pass for them between installments as passes for us)--follow along to see how much transformation a year can bring. Most installments will be exactly 50 words, but to allow myself a little wiggle room I plan to write two 250 word installments and two 100 word installments per month (we'll see how that goes).
