On Loving Thy Neighbor: A long term fan’s perspective

Recent discussion in the tags has gotten me thinking about love, life, and the dynamic of human interaction. And it all brings me back to the same conclusion: fandom, like all things in life, requires a deft touch and an appreciation of nuance.

While it would be easy, even wonderful, if we could all just be kind to each other and have that kindness returned, anyone who has been part of fandom—a part of life in general—knows that it is often not that simple.

Bringing kindness to someone who seeks only to inflict pain on you is not only ineffective, it’s completely masochistic. We understand this when it applies to other areas of life. The solution to queerphobia isn’t “be nicer to the queerphobes” and the solution to sexism isn’t “be nicer to the sexists”. The solution is to tell them to get bent, because they aren’t welcome in the vibrant, beautiful, kind communities we hope to build if they are going to meet us with vitriol and hate. Attempting to placate a queerphobe while building a queer-positive society is like arguing that it’s fine if you just leave just one house in the neighborhood constantly on fire.

Fire does not care about your boundaries. It will spread to the other houses eventually whether you like it or not—whether you intend to let it or not—because that is the nature of fire.

Why, then, do we protect toxic actors in fandom? Why do we wave off a handful of death threats as the same thing as a handful of character or ship opinions? Why do we continue allowing people to wave that kind of behavior off? Why do we think it’s okay to keep the fire?

Simply put, it’s because it takes much less effort to assume "everyone was bad". Figuring out the nuance of a situation is hard; telling everyone to be nicer is easy.

And there the problem lies. There are many situations in which being a little kinder to each other could help. I'm not discounting that. There are also situations where doing so is masochistic and enabling toxicity. Enabled toxicity will never disappear, or quiet. It will only grow. Like fire, there is nothing you can offer it that will stop it from spreading. Pleading with it and offering it sticks to placate it won't stop it from gobbling up your house eventually.

Knowing the difference is where the solution lies. But some people don’t want to do the work to pick apart the nuance of a situation, so they tell you (no matter the context), to just shut up and be nicer. Got death threats against you? Well you said something negative about their favorite character, and you pointing out that they sent you death threats makes them feel bad. See, you both feel bad! So clearly you both must have done something wrong! So maybe you should have just been nicer.

It doesn't matter if your opinions were properly tagged, or if you censored the character's name, or if it was on a blog hidden from searches, or if it was something you sent in a DM one time that got spread around without your knowledge, or if the person who sent you the threats is someone you blocked months ago who shouldn't have been able to see it anyway. You should have anticipated that someone, somewhere in the world, might see it and get mad enough to send you death threats. Take responsibility. Be nicer next time.

If the fire spreads to your house? Well, you shouldn’t have built it so close. You knew the fire was there. It’s your problem. You deal with it.

It rings hollow. “If you were just nicer to your abuser, maybe they wouldn’t have to keep hitting you. Maybe we would all be getting along if you would just shut up about it already.”

No one ever stops to question why the fire is there in the first place, or why people are so desperate to cling to it, or what purpose it could possibly serve when all it ever does is burn down houses.

A harasser, like a fire, is not satisfied with bullying one person, or burning down one house. They will consume everything until nothing is left or they have been put out (sanctioned and excommunicated).

When you claim to take no sides in a situation like this, or you claim both sides are equally bad, you are siding with the toxic actor. You are feeding your fellow fans to the fire in the hopes that you won't be next. You will always be next.

And if there's only a handful of people in your community willing to pick up a bucket and try to fight the fire, while everyone else shrugs and says "just don't build your house too close"? The firefighters will leave, because they know they can't fight it alone, and they know it won't stop, and who wants to live in a house constantly at risk of going up like a tinderbox?

And then, one day, everyone who shrugged and stayed will turn around and wonder why their town is nothing but ashes and cinders. And they will have no one to blame but themselves.

The world only works off of "be kinder" logic if you assume everyone's goal is to get along. The sad truth is, there are always some fires, and their definition of "getting along" includes destruction and pain incompatible with kindness.

I think the only people who truly believe the core of the problem is that everyone "isn't kind enough" are so used to sitting in a burning house that they can no longer smell the smoke.

To the anon who is worried they're a fake fan:

I've only played one Fire Emblem game to completion. It's Three Houses. I play on casual mode so my units won't die. I can't remember anything about weapons triangles. I keep making my units the preferred classes they ask me to make them. I only ship Byleth ships. I main Byleth in Smash. I don't want to play games that won't let me turn off permadeath.

I have a best friend who can't play most of the older titles or even Engage because the graphics cause their migraines to be exhaserbated. They listen to me reading Engage over discord.

I'm the most basic bitch in this entire fandom.

You're just as vital to the lifeblood of this fandom as anyone else. Which games you've played does not determine your fandom cred. Your enjoyment of the franchise and how you share that joy with others is what makes you a fan.

I do definitely suggest getting a switch and Houses and Engage for your shelf simply because I think it's good to have on hand before the new console comes out and switch games go the way of Path of Radiance. But only after you make a list of other games you'd want to own for that console.

In the meantime, if you can find plenty of amazing let's plays on youtube or pirate the games for your PC if you really want to experience the switch games but not invest money.

I suggest finding friends who own the games that'd be willing to play with you via discord though. That way you can have fun taking turns to make choices and create memes and in jokes.

Chris Thorndyke is THE hated kid in the Sonic fandom and for what??? The whimsy of being sonic's friend?????? Being neglected by his parents but not acting like the sad little neglected child in a gacha movie????? Because the dub writers made him a little more annoying???? For years if you searched the chris thorndyke tag it was NOTHING but vitriol and anger towards this child. His one crime was thinking Sonic was cool and the fandom sentenced him to death for it.

"This boy. This POOR BOY. Would've submitted him to Yall Hate Teens if I could have, because BOY does the fandom rag on him. But thankfully, he applies to this one as well.

Jusr for some background. Okay so we got this 14 year old kid. Born in a (non-white) country with a lot of emphasis on fighting (which is iffy in its own sense too), and he ends up put in a battle at a young age. During this battle, he's captured by the soldiers of a noble family from the white people continent, and made into their ""servant"" (but let's be real, they aren't paying him.) Eventually, he's rescued by the pope, who is secretly a dragon, and he becomes very indebted to her because of this. He becomes almost fanatical in his respect for her, and that's where the main source of people disliking him in the fandom comes from. They think he's annoying. Or make really gross sexual jokes about him (14) and the 100 bajillion year old (that was hyperbole) dragon pope who arguably groomed him according to certain interpretations.

Anyway, for the things the writers did to him! Well, for one, a few of his supports are pretty bad. One particularly terrible one stands out-- his Hilda support. In which he's doing his job, working hard and stuff and she starts saying all these racist comments about how she didn't know that his people were capable of that. He's (rightfully) really rude to her for their first 2 supports, but eventually they have a slightly more friendly relationship. Their A is her bringing home a letter from her brother, telling her that racism is bad. That was what it took for her to realize that, by the way.

Okay, a little iffy, but guess what? You remember the noble family that he was ENSLAVED BY? YEAH. She is a member of that family. And in their paired ending? They get married. He marries the racist white woman who basically decided that he was one of the good ones. You want to know who he DOESN'T gave a paired ending with? Someone who can share his experience of growing up with a complex relationship with his culture. Or the guy who is curious about him and his life and helps to show him the beauty in the mundane, in a really very sweet support that tragically only goes up to B, wanting to go on a trip with him to see his homeland when everything is over. Or the ither person of color who feels questionably indebted to a powerful white person. Also his Byleth S support is really weird and creepy.

Oh, and he was completely cut out of the spin-off game. He was supposed to be playable in it, but they cut him out. You kill him in Scarlet Blaze (or maybe he doesn't die. I forget. You fight him.) And I think he sometimes shows up in other routes but that's it. He was done so dirty by the writers, the fandom, everyone. It's really fucked up."

I was fine with Cyril but a ton of people online SEVERELY hated my boy for just existing so I grew to love him out of spite. Cyril's backstory had him as a child soldier that was captured by the enemy nation where he became a servant to a noble family. Archbishop Rhea noticed Cyril and took him to Garreg Mach Monastery where he willingly works for her out of gratitude for giving him a home when he was at his worst. Because he's a kid (who's also far more mature than some of the older cast) Cyril was one of the few characters who was critical of the protagonist from the get go and I think this brought in the hate. Like- Cyril WAS a kidnapping victim but he's also mature enough to recognize that his home nation wasn't perfect and only encouraged a bloody culture that kept making orphans. Cyril technically doesn't need to work or stay at Garreg Mach but he does so because he feels that he owes Lady Rhea and the localization of FE16 smooths over a lot of that info. Like- leave my boy aloneee he's just living his own life instead of making the protagonist the center of his universe. He's a child soldier that has yet to really find his place in the world after finally being given the reigns of his own life. Cyril my son. Cyril my boy- you are more than all the hate. Be free my child

FIRE EMBLEM FYI: Specifically for 3Houses/3Hopes because I need a separate one for this franchise specificially given how many crazy things I got due to being involved in this fanbase via my fanworks:

DO NOT try to convince me to like or tolerate Byleth/student ships, ESPECIALLY the ones with the lords (aka CIaude, Dimitri, EdeIgard). I already summarized why I don’t like FE3H Byleth ships with student chars here. While the spinoff game FEW3H has now removed that teacher/student problematic situation, the fandom keeps putting the FE3H elements into the FEW3H fanworks (i.e. remembering Byleth from “another life” trope)...so no thanks!! DO NOT SHOW ME IT!!!

As for the Byleth ships with faculty members, my response is here so don’t try to bait me about that topic either thanks.

I do not care whom you ingame S-support. 3Houses limits the dating-sim part of the game to that character, so I cannot care less about how you play the game. The main issue I have is when people treat Byleth the “character” as a legit ship material when I personally think they are a cool character ruined by fans who are too obsessed with badly executed self insert otome tropes bc they self-project super hard onto them. Just to be clear, any FE3H or FEW3H OC/Canon >>>>>>Byleth ships personally. Even Byleth-sonas that remove the teacher/student aspects are better than canon FE3H!Byleth

Please don't drag FE VA statements as some sort of “gotcha” on my opinions like this post here. IDC what other people prefer with ship shit, that’s their problem and not mine. I am not gonna bother them about it. So don’t bother ME about it.

what would you recommend as a first Fire Emblem game to play? do i just pick up the latest one, or does an older one capture the True Fire Emblem Experience(tm) better? sorta like Super Metroid still being my absolute favorite of that series…

iiiiiinteresting question, huh! it probably depends somewhat on what you think you'll like / care about the most in a Fire Emblem game?

my personal first FE game was Sacred Stones & i think that's still a really good place to start. the spritework is *gorgeous*; i personally think it's the visual peak of the series. it's got the core "old-school" FE gameplay but with lots of nice quality-of-life improvements (as compared to e.g. something like FE4 or FE7), and the story is my second-favorite in the series after the Tellius games—just a good core emotional core with really well-drawn characters and support conversations.

the drawback is that it's on GBA, so if you don't have one of those lying around (or some other handheld to play it on), you're stuck playing it on an emulator on a computer, which i think hampers the enjoyment somewhat—like, i played a lot of that game in "in-between" moments, while on the bus, etc, and it was really excellent for that. also: it's on the easier side! which i didn't mind; i find the FE game loop enjoyable both when i'm just cruising through baddies AND when i'm having to tightly & rigorously strategize every move. but i know a couple people who stopped playing because they found it too easy & got bored

i do think the Gamecube/Wii FEs (Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, aka the Tellius games) hold up really well. obviously i am a little insane about them *stares at fanfiction output* and thus clearly biased, but the character writing is shockingly good & rich (sometimes despite itself, lol), and the gameplay's real fun! reasonably challenging while not making you want to throw your controller across the room (unless you opt into lunatic you mad lad!). i do think they're a little ugly though lol. rip. also, if you like PoR enough to play RD, you'll find RD... uneven. it's uneven in ways that mostly delight me, but like, yeah it's suffering a little from "we're telling like four different storylines with a HUGE cast & jerking you around between them a bit" so it interrupts the usual "smooth progression of your carefully-curated army" gameflow for something more like "wow, hope you're looking forward to saying BYE FELICIA to all your old dudes & putting down a random rebellion in Crimea for exactly five chapters & then doing something else entirely."

those games are my personal faves though and. i will always tell people to start with them. in principle. but you should decide if you trust me lol

a WHOLE lot lot of people got started with Awakening, and the core gameplay in that one is VERY fun. about halfway through, if you're sufficiently clever at assigning abilities, the game becomes a little too easy to "break," but it's an enjoyable ride the whole time. it also introduced a LOT of the quality-of-life improvements people now take for granted in modern FEs (you can choose to disable permadeath; UX is much nicer; etc). so if dealing with some old-school cruft is unpalatable to you, you'll definitely want Awakening or newer.

unfortunately the writing in Awakening is, uh, not great, lol. there's two generations of characters you're playing as, and the first generation is just... not very interesting! very one-note and tropey! storyline is nonsense! the second-generation characters are a little more fun but overall i found the main plot's incoherence + the plethora of dull characters meant that i found the story very forgettable.

i think the writing in Conquest/Birthright is similarly weak but i do have to say, if you want to powergame and optimize stats and get REALLY SWEATY GAMEPLAY NERD about it, Conquest can't be beat. best map design in the series, extremely challenging, etc

and then there's the massive fandom juggernaut known as Three Houses lol. of the "modern" FEs, this game contains the most Stuff I Like About Fire Emblem. the storyline's a lil jankier than e.g. the Tellius storyline, but still has plenty of fun stuff to chew on, and even if you don't some of the 3-4 storylines offered, there's a pretty strong chance you'll resonate with at least one of them. and the gameplay is *fun*, lots of QoL improvements, reasonably snappy...

...but it does have a somewhat bloated, "AAA-gamification" feel. visiting the monastery between EVERY SINGLE FUCKING CHAPTER to do "home base"-y stuff gets old fast. and also, the gameplay starts to drag some as you go along... a campaign takes like 40-50hrs iirc, and near the end, i usually find myself going like "jfc i don't WANT to do these three skirmish battles before i go onto the next one... but i need to because it's the Objectively Optimal Thing To Do... why is this game making playing it so annoying," lol. also, the writing, while reasonably solid... could've been reduced by like 50% and probably been *stronger*? most "old-school" FE games only had 3-5 support conversations per unit, and that was generally enough to give a good sense of the character without Overwhelming With Pointless Chatter. but so many characters in Three Houses have *so much more* text than that and it just starts feeling like.. a chore... to go through... especially when in practice i won't even like all those conversations... so yeah idk

tl;dr if you have slightly old-school sensibilities, get Sacred Stones; if you want a "modern" feel, get Awakening or Three Houses; if you want to make Lua Internetperson happy, personally, you should grab Path of Radiance :P

A short Journey Through My Art History

2025 Almost draws near... and its been almost 12 years since I started drawing so I thought might as well share my personal story as an artist, where I came from and how things changed.

Around the year 2012 my best friend in school looked over my random school doodles and said I had potential... she back then had a Deviantart account of herself... recommending me if I also want to join her, why not use the name of my first oc... and even if that isn't fully true cause I had an oc before Fumiko... Casey was an oc I wanted to get rid off so fast in favour of her... and so I started as a Tradtional artist that... well basically was at her start using how to Manga books and learning... I noticed Humans weren't really something I felt great with drawing but my Spagetti Anatomy...

Sonic characters... and so the very first fandom I started in was with making Sonic ocs. Slowly my friend also helped me get Paint tool sai and my first drawing Tablet which I played around with... and slowly became happy that I was able to make commisions and get myself some good art of my ocs. I had a great friendgroup I spend time with Skyping and it was a fun time.

However... eventually I noticed the usual meme of hating on Sonic kinda hitting myself... I had fun with my ocs but eventually some blogs adding them to the "bad sonic ocs" Category... kinda made me stop... looking back at them sure they were not the greatest but also only my start when I didn't know what OCs could be... and just my first attempts... Eventually I left the fandom just to get out of the Sonic zone and also get back to attempting to draw Humans again and see how it goes.

I did make much more fanart of games I loved too, testing my waters on what I could do and if I can give my favourite games and media some love.

And eventually I mostly went back to OC making over Fan ocs for the things I liked back then Like Pokemon, Kid icarus and many more.

But what really got me passionate and drawing a lot was eventually finding a small group who looked for people to Join a Nicoronpa Danganronpa fangame... and so I met the Nicoronpa group... a long lasting friendgroup that I worked on for a game with together.

It was a passion project I drew a lot for an especially the Birth of Carol being my main Sona... but eventually... things went busy... people started playing Multiplayer games and I stayed at my single players... my last bigger project was a Fire emblem Three houses House called the Green Fox... and then I seeked something bigger to do again... just to arrive at the Announcement of Octavinelle and Twisted wonderland coming in.

The Birth of Monsville, Hourglass Station Academy and around 112 or so OCs that kept me going, friends I cherish, a place where we could go wild... even if it had its down side... people who said they could tell others what they are allowed to do, Drama, people who you think you are friends with but... then drop you... It wasn't always great in this fandom like it was in some others but.... it did keep me passionate... I felt happy to make more and more inspired ocs of Games I adored with all my heart...

However sadly recently I also notice I am losing passion for it... Hence my recent change.

I went on the become multifandom and focus on the past... the times I made fancharacters to ship with Canon characters or other ocs for fun... the times I just enjoyed Yapping and Fleshing out characters...

I know thanks to work and my circumstances I am far from my old activity and the stuff I put out but... I still want to continue this journey... as a hobby artist who just does things for fun and wants to draw and write her Silly ships where she can... even if I lost and gained a lot... I sure hope that the future goes better... and things slowly calm down more.

Ok so MK9 has caused a new wave of speculation/wishlists popping up and there's one commonly seen pick in particular that bothers me to the point I can safely say they're my least wanted character for MK9, yes even over another baby or Metal variant. Though not because I dislike the character, but rather because adding them in MK9 would be rather irresponsible at this point in time.

MAJOR BROTHERSHIP SPOILERS BELOW.

Look I want Mario RPG characters to be added to spinoffs as much as the next guy and would die for a Brothership character to be added in MK9 but Reclusa shouldn't be added to MK9 (or any other Mario spinoff for that matter) for at least two years, if not even longer.

Like, the guy is a major spoiler in a story-heavy game due to being the true main villain and a major plot-twist, and thus is a very well kept secret who wasn't alluded AT ALL in the marketing. Having him be playable in Mario Kart would be the Mario RPG equvalient of how Shulks final smash infamously spoils the identity of the final party member of Xenoblade Chronicles, something that was very criticized by the Xenoblade community at the time of this being announced even if XB1 was like, almost a decade old at that point. And given how Brothership would most likely barely be a year old by the time MK9 is released, it'd be even worse.

Yeah one could argue that Reclusa would probably be an open secret by that point given how internet and spoilerculture works but I kinda doubt it. Brothership hasn't really caught on in the larger cultural osmosis on outside hardcore Mario communities, so most outsiders don't know that Reclusa exists. Meanwhile in the Mario fandom people are generally tried to be hush hush about him because of the game sitll being relatively new, though that spoiler embargo seems to be gradually lifting but not to the point I'd classify him as an open secret just then. Even then you have to understand that the online fandom is a fraction of the people who play Mario, and most of them don't play RPGs. As such, showing a major spoiler character would be a very bad move for casual fans. Because you kinda ruin their experience that way. Again, see the Xenoblade situation or how Fire Emblem Heroes has been cirticized by often being very casual with major plot-twists.

Anyways moral of the story they should add Connie, Technikki or the Extension Corps to MK9 instead of Reclusa. Let him still be a secret. Heck, even Zokket would be a better choice due to being the main villain for most of the game who was shown in pre-release material, and the guy arguably is just as much of a spoilermine as Reclusa is due the big twist surrounding him.

We can be Fe3h trauma buddies together 🤝. I don't like the gameplay style of the FE series, but I was curious about the hype of Fe3h so I watched a streamer play it. And I really liked it and enjoyed the BL story a lot and then they started BE and I didn't care much for Edelgard at the start (due partially from starting with the BL story), but I wanted to see how her story went. I don't care what people like, I am not one to get upset that my fave isn't someone else's fave, but the chat refused to hear any even vaguely negative takes on Edelgard that I dropped the series right before the time skip of the BE. Like, I couldn't even say that I wasn't as immersed in the BE story without being attacked. It was horrible. Fe3h was interesting from the stories I got to see, but its fandom definitely made me weary to go into any other game. Also, being unfollowed/attacked because you don't like a character is so stupid, like those people need to grow up. They are all fictional!!!!! Anyway, sorry for the rant, just wanted you to know you are not alone in your Fe3h trauma.

Ok so this is my personal hot take

But I feel like the best way to play fe3houses is by starting with the Golden Deer

Golden Deer is the one route that deviates from the whole Edelgard vs Dimitri drama, like it IS there, but it's way more subtle since Claude focuses more on other aspects of the whole fodlan shenanigans going on, going deeper into the church conspiracies, etc

Blue Lions is like extremely biased against Edelgard and like, it IS understandable why! And the Black Eagles have the Blue Lions as their main opposition since they side with the church and Edelgard is against the church, so again, if you start with the Black Eagles it IS understandable why you'd be biased against Dimitri

I personally started with Golden Deer and like, I didn't personally cared for the whole family drama between Edelgard and Dimitri when I later played BE and BL, like I didn't feel too strongly for either of them

(I prefer Edelgard over Dimitri but like I'm a lesbian what did you expect lmao but Claude clears both of them imo)

Anyway this is a very long way to say that the earlier discourse surrounding fe3houses is mostly cause people were (and still are I feel) very biased and protective over their first house, ESPECIALLY between the black eagles and blue lions fans

Which again, I get why since the game pushes a narrative if you start with any of those two, but it got ridiculous at some point

The golden deer are my first house and I love them deerly (lol) the only reason they're not my top 1 house is because it has my least favorite character in like the franchise lmao but she's also a fan favorite so I don't like talking about how I dislike her 🙈

Also, as a side note, the other games don't have fandoms as polarizing as this one, I LOVE the fandom when it comes to other fire emblem games, but the fire emblem 3 houses fandom is like a niche fandom of its own and I don't like engaging with it at all

You should give the series another try, fire emblem has excellent stories and characters, it's just the fe3h part of the fandom that's rotten sometimes

Wanted to do a batch f/o introduction, since I couldn't stop thinking about them while at work, so here are the six new f/o's with a short blurb to go along with them.

Velvet Scarletina (RWBY) - Prior to tonight, I had a short crush on Velvet at age 15. It only lasted a few days. Present day, age 20, she is now a proper f/o.

Cinder Fall (RWBY) - Had a thing for her back when I was 17, grew out of it at 18, and rekindled the flame at 20 (current age), especially with the Seonhee-esque air she gives off.

Weiss Schnee (RWBY) - Jeez, do I have a lot to say about my selfship with Weiss. I would be taking up the whole post if I did this now, so I'll just say this for now: enemies to lovers.

Miss Tatsu (Yakuza 0) - The only addition that's actually recent. Was playing through the first 2 chapters of Yakuza 0, and needless to say, it was love at first sight with Miss Tatsu.

Olette (Kingdom Hearts) - My first true Kingdom Hearts selfship, my selfship with Olette walked so my selfship with Aqua could run. It was short lived (until now), but it happened at age 14.

Eula Lawrence (Genshin Impact) - Had a thing for her back when I was 17, when my three main fandoms were Genshin, Fire Emblem, and Yakuza/Like A Dragon. Ended up losing attraction to her because of an anti who shall not be named making me hate Genshin, citing the gacha mechanics as a reason to hate Genshin.

"This boy. This POOR BOY. Would've submitted him to Yall Hate Teens if I could have, because BOY does the fandom rag on him. But thankfully, he applies to this one as well.

Jusr for some background. Okay so we got this 14 year old kid. Born in a (non-white) country with a lot of emphasis on fighting (which is iffy in its own sense too), and he ends up put in a battle at a young age. During this battle, he's captured by the soldiers of a noble family from the white people continent, and made into their ""servant"" (but let's be real, they aren't paying him.) Eventually, he's rescued by the pope, who is secretly a dragon, and he becomes very indebted to her because of this. He becomes almost fanatical in his respect for her, and that's where the main source of people disliking him in the fandom comes from. They think he's annoying. Or make really gross sexual jokes about him (14) and the 100 bajillion year old (that was hyperbole) dragon pope who arguably groomed him according to certain interpretations.

Anyway, for the things the writers did to him! Well, for one, a few of his supports are pretty bad. One particularly terrible one stands out-- his Hilda support. In which he's doing his job, working hard and stuff and she starts saying all these racist comments about how she didn't know that his people were capable of that. He's (rightfully) really rude to her for their first 2 supports, but eventually they have a slightly more friendly relationship. Their A is her bringing home a letter from her brother, telling her that racism is bad. That was what it took for her to realize that, by the way.

Okay, a little iffy, but guess what? You remember the noble family that he was ENSLAVED BY? YEAH. She is a member of that family. And in their paired ending? They get married. He marries the racist white woman who basically decided that he was one of the good ones. You want to know who he DOESN'T gave a paired ending with? Someone who can share his experience of growing up with a complex relationship with his culture. Or the guy who is curious about him and his life and helps to show him the beauty in the mundane, in a really very sweet support that tragically only goes up to B, wanting to go on a trip with him to see his homeland when everything is over. Or the ither person of color who feels questionably indebted to a powerful white person. Also his Byleth S support is really weird and creepy.

Oh, and he was completely cut out of the spin-off game. He was supposed to be playable in it, but they cut him out. You kill him in Scarlet Blaze (or maybe he doesn't die. I forget. You fight him.) And I think he sometimes shows up in other routes but that's it. He was done so dirty by the writers, the fandom, everyone. It's really fucked up."

I was fine with Cyril but a ton of people online SEVERELY hated my boy for just existing so I grew to love him out of spite. Cyril's backstory had him as a child soldier that was captured by the enemy nation where he became a servant to a noble family. Archbishop Rhea noticed Cyril and took him to Garreg Mach Monastery where he willingly works for her out of gratitude for giving him a home when he was at his worst. Because he's a kid (who's also far more mature than some of the older cast) Cyril was one of the few characters who was critical of the protagonist from the get go and I think this brought in the hate. Like- Cyril WAS a kidnapping victim but he's also mature enough to recognize that his home nation wasn't perfect and only encouraged a bloody culture that kept making orphans. Cyril technically doesn't need to work or stay at Garreg Mach but he does so because he feels that he owes Lady Rhea and the localization of FE16 smooths over a lot of that info. Like- leave my boy aloneee he's just living his own life instead of making the protagonist the center of his universe. He's a child soldier that has yet to really find his place in the world after finally being given the reigns of his own life. Cyril my son. Cyril my boy- you are more than all the hate. Be free my child

in her home game, she’s an honourable thief who steals to give back to the orphanage that raised her. although restricted in her writing by virtue of being a minor character in an SNES game from the nineties, she has a memorable personality and one of the few characters who gets a canon backstory written for her outside of the game. she also has a celebrity crush on a prince who is at least a decade her senior. this is where my problem with how the writers treated her rises up: in this game, one of the main mechanics is pairing characters up in romantic relationships. one of patty’s most pushed pairings (and somewhat popular in certain circles in the fandom) is her with said prince. incredibly strange imo.

so then she gets added to the mobile game a year ago. for some reason they completely ignored her established motivations and made her personality revolve around that prince, and made her wayyy more obsessed. like to the point his younger cousin tells her to chill out. and like she also had a crush on the main character of her game they could’ve pushed for a much less creepy romance but no :/ patty i am so sorry girl

I try to avoid discourse and drama, but since I like to draw characters kissing, I have unsurprisingly received asks about character ages and whether or not certain characters should be allowed to kiss, and I'm sure I'll get more. I'd prefer not to answer the same question twice so here's what I've already answered.

My thoughts on people assuming the ages of anime/cartoon characters

Also, I want to make it clear that the proshipper ask is the ONLY ask of that nature that I will ever respond to on my art blog. I will most likely delete any future similar asks, but if I do decide to respond to one, I will do so by making a post on my main blog and including a screenshot of the ask. I refuse to clutter my art blog with aggressive asks from people who just want to be mad at nothing.

Man I hate the fire emblem fanbase so much it is hurting my enjoyment of the games. They can nitpick every little thing about Engage's and Fate's story, but watch out if you point out that Edelgard blaming the church for her experimentstion and not, y'know, her uncle who she KNOWS is an Arganthan, or how it doesn't make sense that the disappearance of 9 royals was swept snugly under the rug in the empire, or how Jeralt was suspsicious of Rheas doing to Byleth what she did to HIM, and suddenly you're a "hater" and "you have bad taste" and " lack media literacy".

3houses has the same storytelling issues Fates and Engage have, but bc the game has big tiddy lesbians and "I can fix them" traumatized characters = best JRPG since FF7. Fuck right off bruh. I'm so tired.

It does lend a lot of chances to be hypocritical in the fandom yes.

For as much as people can hate about Engage's time travel and magic stuff, or anything regarding Valla in Fates, at least those are purely fantastical. Does it erase the problems? No. But "magic world has magic things that don't need to always be explained in great detail" is-or at least should be-a sufficient explanation.

3H's issues, meanwhile, are almost always logical, informative, and communicative. Edelgard's war is predicated on logic jumps built upon exaggerated issues, an inflated ego, a savior complex, and half truths, and she herself is a canonical liar and manipulator. 3H's worldbuilding is based upon taking NPCs, books, and character biases as fact, despite there being known cover ups in Fodlan's history; to the point where it's not even fully known whether the other Hresvelg siblings actually exist. Jeralt is supposed to be 100% trustworthy as your dad, but being vigilant means you'll probably realize he's kind of shit and did a poor job properly teaching Byleth growing up.

Fates might have the Valla curse and a magic truth throne, but those things have a simple A -> B explanation and impact on that game's plot. It's easy to criticize because it's easy to understand.

3H on the other hand, you have to constantly twist yourself into a pretzel in order justify every angle and every motivation for every character in the game, mostly in service of not overly shitting on Edelgard's character, which usually results in kowtowing to her fans by shitting on Rhea, Dimitri, the church and Faerghus or, in my eyes, giving up and claiming "no one's completely in the right and that's why the story's good in the first place!"

From my perspective, if this happens, where someone can't form a rock solid opinion on even just how they personally feel/think about the writing, then either they need more time to themselves instead of online discourse or (where I lean) the writing they're discussing simply isn't that good enough to warrant engaging with its bad faith fans.

Side tangent that doesn't really fit but I wanted to say it anyway: Other FE games' moral dilemmas worked as well as they did because they were ornamental; a spice to the main emotional and thematic thrust of what their stories were trying to convey. Even the more complex examples like the Tellius and Jugdral games, weren't trying to sell their stories based on "look how complex and morally gray everything is", they were natural elements of war stories that supplemented the more major storytelling beats (Tellius' discrimination aesop, religious and political dogma, class warfare, and Jugdral's geopolitical inheritance feuds and territorial disputes, blood quantums, and passing the torch to the next generation).

3H's main drive... is the moral grayness. War horrors, comparisons between peace time and conflict, and constant conversation over "what the other side's justification is" while trying to "fix Fodlan." And the sloppy, fractured, and overly bleak attempts at nuance exemplified in the story is precisely why moral grayness shouldn't be the main factor. But people ate it up because... well, the prose wasn't too shabby I guess.
