If there is any website that needs the dislike button, it's Youtube again.
heard someone say archive of our own should install a "dislike" button and I thought I should say this: no, there's absolutely no need for archive of our own to install a "dislike" button.
why? because archive of our own isn't tiktok or youtube or twitter/x where users can monetize their content. archive of our own is a nonprofit site run by fans for fans, which means every content — every fanfic — you see on archive of our own was made out of pure love and passion from the artists/authors.
ao3 authors write because writing about these characters is their happiness and passion. they write for themselves, but they were generous enough to share with you their creations.
they're not "content creators" the way tiktokers or youtubers or instagram models are. they don't "make content" for views and engagements that can be monetized.
so no, you don't get to "grade their works" unless they specifically and directly ask you to.
you don't get to "say what you dislike about their works" unless they specifically and directly ask you to.
you don't get to "dislike" works that are not made specifically to please you in the first place. you're just a guest in someone's house, a house in which they let you in because they were kind, you don't get to roam around their house and say what you dislike about their furniture. you don't get to roam around their house and say you "dislike their house".
of course, you can have your opinion about the house its host invites you in. but if it's a negative one and you find yourself not liking the house, the polite things for you to do is excuse yourself and leave without telling them you dislike their house.
and just because you personally dislike the house doesn't mean the house is "ugly" either. the house you dislike could be a favorite, most luxurious place to many others.
my point is, don't be entitled by wanting the rights to voice your disapproval of things that you get to enjoy for free. don't be entitled by wanting the rights to voice your disapproval of things that were made out of love and passion — things the artists made for themselves for fun.
it makes you look like an entitled jerk with main character syndrome. the universe does not revolve around you.
now repeat after me: don't like don't read. no one forces you to continue reading a fic you don't like. quietly leave instead of being rude to authors who write for free because writing is their source of comfort.
people are so used to contents that were made because it's a trend / contents like tiktok that were made with the main purpose of reaching high engagement and making profits that they forget sometimes things can be made out of love and be made just for fun. sometimes things are supposed to just be for people to enjoy, and if some people don't enjoy them, then they can simply leave without being unnecessary unkind.

I don’t like to put personal negative stuff on here, so this is probably the only thing I’ll say about this matter.
But gee, ain’t it funny how transphobes get so pressed about me making a fictional hedgehog trans. Like it has any weight other than a fun fact.

A helpful reminder when calling people about voting against H.R. 9495/H.R 6408 and voting against KOSA. (By the way, Americans under 18 can still call too.)

This image is from a series where I drew …most?? Of the Feldspars for a gallery show. No idea where the original paintings ended up, but happy to have found the scans!

IAMTHEDOG -Sir Chloe i love this fucken album so much. the goddamn imagery dude. the sexual overtones. prey versus predator. shame versus desire. an uncontrollable appetite and a longing for the familiar even if it hurts. Resentment. Self-loathing. Power.

For anyone who's curious, yes, I saw The Video. Not only do I keep up with the analog horror space and am thus familiar with Wendigoon, I also happen to be a big IPOS fan, ever since his videos on Beksinski & Kenneth Anger.
Ironically, I'd unfollowed Wendigoon a month or two ago anyway, partially because of a lot of what IPOS addressed. Despite some flaws in his presentation, his critiques were valid as ever. I don't want to get too deep into politics here, but I genuinely believe Wendigoon is a very easy entry point to the alt right pipeline, and I'd honestly been trying to ignore it. His videos are incredibly basic and don't have much more to offer inquistive minds than Google, but when he's not recitimg cryptids' Wiki pages at you, some of them can be foundational for getting into the scene. I'd heard of it before, but his video is what got me into TMM (though I think his 2nd TMM vid is one of the worst I've ever seen.) But it reaches a point where it's just a never ending cycle of guns, god, & Magic Spoon, and you can't ignore that shit anymore.
He (and the people he promotes, you can whine about guilt by association all you want but let's be honest, public figures endorsing other public figures isn't meaningless) are gonna radicalize people. And right wing, Christian, police state shit is a death sentence to anyone who isn't white, straight, upper class, and "normal." And, as IPOS discussed earlier in that same video, horror is an inherently punk/counterculture genre that we can't let be co-opted by right wing chuds.

(TW: Mentions of CSA (child sexual abuse)
All of these bad "protect minors" internet bills (KOSA or as I like to call it "Kill Online Speech Act", Bill S-210, Bill SB976, the EU bill for Chat Control, etc) frustrate me like crazy, but the reason why KOSA annoys me the most, beside the fact it requires government ID upload worldwide to use the web, not just in North America, (something these American pro KOSA politicians like to forget) when people outside of the USA did not consent to it, but also because it is very hypocritical to push Kill Online Speech Act to law this year to "protect kids" when the USA has child marriages still legal in so many states!
Excuse me Marsha Blackburn, Richard Blumenthal, Chuck Schumer, and Rob Wittman, do you (especially Schumer and Blumenthal since these 2 has been pushing for KOSA the most) not realize how weird it looks to push for KOSA in America to "protect kids" when these "marriages" are still around? Getting a 16 year married to someone 4+ years older than them is way worse than most things on the internet. At least they can they can close or turn off their smartphone/computer. Getting out of a "marriage" like that would be super difficult.
Since an Committee mark up (not an actual vote yet) for KOSA is happening this Wednesday (September 18th) please, if you're an American, email or call them calmly (unlike me in this post doing a vent) to vote NO on KOSA and patiently explain why this bill should not happen. Tell them how bad it would look for America if KOSA becomes a thing to "protect kids" when the end of legal child marriages didn't happen and wasn't a priority before any internet bill. Please tell that other danger to kids offline that should be focused before KOSA or any other internet bill. (How can you protect anyone under 18 from the "dangerous internet" and then have them spend less time online when things outside the internet isn't safe either?)
Also if you are American parent, please, please call and tell them you are against KOSA, don't let the title of "Kids Online Safety Act" fool you. It won't do anything to help your kids.
If you aren't an American parent, but you know any, please tell them why KOSA is bad for kids and everyone else so they can also call against it.
Everything you need is below:
