penny is so desperate to save her now-friends she accidentally changes the course of fate: the one i'm working on rn! she tries to save them from their death but they go on the rollercoaster anyway but she isn't on the ride and calls an ambulance and accidentally on purpose saves them ! they weren't supposed to be brought back but penny was like "NO! I NEED TO SAVE THEM! I CARE AB THEM!" she uses savannah bc penny and jane are two different people to her and she wants to be her own person :) the others deal with injury and hospital stuff but i've never really been in a hospital for smth serious and idk much ab injuries so my knowledge is limited to google and stuff lol !

everyone lives w/ no injuries only their memories: the one i might do next? jane refuses to leave without her new besties bc they are the only people she knows :( they all hold hands while they go to watch jane go and she drags them through the curtain while karnak shorts out so she doesn't get to find out who she is and they have to deal with a jane in a new body and try to find out who she is heheh (I HAD TO FIND THE POST THAT KINDA INSPIRED ME IT'S FROM PENNYDOE ON TUMBLR HERE from them having to teach her to be human? ig? also a little bit like "Now we know what YOLO really means" by NeverEndingCarnival on ao3 but rly i think it's just bc no one gets injured and i'm planning on it being a really long fic) anyways that happens and yeah

ghost au!: inspired by the ghost au of witcherstorm bc that's the very first ghost au i saw that was like "I FREAKING LOVE GHOST AUS HOW COME I DIDN'T THINK OF THIS WHEN I GOT INTO RTC WTF" anyways they're all dead stuck in limbo and a few days later they all like get whooshed into the real world and they're all like "um where are we wtf happened aren't we supposed to be dead" and they like look around after re-orienting themselves and see penny and she's like "HELL YEAH IT WORKED" cause she tried a ghost summoning ritual to bring them back and then shenanigans ensue like them freaking out ppl at the school esp rude ones and protecting penny and meeting ezra who can't see them but knows they're there and penny keeps accidentally talking to them and yeah!

penny "what-did-i-get-myself-into" lamb and the amnesiac choir: so i lied there were 4 aus but i forgot the fourth one so i didn't write it in the og post but i just remembered it so basically penny gets brought back along with everyone else before the accident and everyone thinks she's insane bc she wonders out loud ab the warehouse and they're all like "girl wtf" and she's freaking out like "wait they don't remember it shit shit shit" and she has to try to get them to bond like they did in the warehouse (goddamn she has her work cut out for her) and she's kinda bad at it bc she accidentally sometimes spills stuff from the warehouse but she's actually p good at it bc it's only ever small stuff that they happened to have mentioned before so they all think she just really listens to them but she keeps dropping hints and basically as soon as someone learns the lesson they learned while in the warehouse they regain their memories of that time but they have to be subtle around everyone else bc the rest would just think they're crazy so it's a whole ordeal lol

i want to do smth for all of them but i have to work on one at a time or i'll get overwhelmed but that's basically it for the ideas bouncing around my head

Okay SINCE I DID A YAP SESSION ANALYSIS ON CONNIE. IM DOING ONE FOR PENNY/JANE. buckle up this might be a tad longer since I'm obsessed with funky lil tragic girls that are doomed to the dramatic irony of their worst fears

Okay. So. Jane/Penny IMMEDIATELY sets up the overall undertone of the musical during Karnak's Dream Of Life. I was admittedly a tad confused upon first seeing it— especially with how it seemed to be brushed off for a good 15 first minutes of the musical. Then- woah. Holy shit. Jane appearing from behind the curtains out of basically nowhere as the "mystery contestant" gave me chills. Her tone as a character is so vastly contrast to the others in such a surreal and unnerving way that you can't help but be so intrigued but wary. Especially with how, like— so many characters similar to her that I've seen tend to be villianized a lot. But- no. She's- she feels more- human. To me, at least. That's the irony of it, huh? She doesn't know who she is. She walks with only the lingering regret & guilt of mourning a distant memory that she might never get back. Cursed to a fate that's admittedly horrifying when you think about it; all without knowing or remembering what she did to deserve such fate. Jane- DEFINITELY has some catholic guilt themeing going on, and it's fun to speculate all the religious undertones and details of her character!

She's just- so interesting to me. I deadass had to pause the musical and stare at my screen for a few minutes after TBOJD just so I could like- take it all in. Since it REALLY. REALLY. Hit close to home for me, as someone who's very much struggled and even temporarily lost their sense of identity, often being deemed forgettable by most— or just straight up cast out and alienated. Being formerly religious and deathly afraid of messing things up and ending up in the bad place was just the cherry on top!

Jane is. Such a complex character to me, ESPECIALLY if you bring (Legoland)Penny into the mix, viewing them as the same person. There's so much dramatic irony and slight foreshadowing in both shows that only deepens her as a character.

She's definitely not dumb or anything, that's for sure. She seems to be pretty damn smart! Guess it runs in the family, lol.

But like- being forgotten by almost everyone, well aware of the horrible fate you've been condemned to. Confused and lost, yet simultaneously an empty shell of someone who used to be "human." Now just. Only viewed as a creepy, unfeeling empty "doll." Not knowing how to properly express your emotions and desperately trying to connect with others, seeking that warmth of familiarity that deep down you know you'll NEVER get back. Nothing is waiting for you after the smoke clears. You've been abandoned by everything you currently know, including "god" itself. Swallowed up whole by time itself like you never even existed. You just want to go home. You just want to feel something— anything. You just want someone to treat you like a person and tell you who you are.

It's. So heartbreaking once you realize some of the implications and slight foreshadowing placed in Legoland. Penny says something about how she was afraid that nobody would notice if she died. There's multiple references to decapitation. Both Karnak & Ricky repeat lines that Penny’s said in the Legoland script. There's so many little details about her and it's just JRHRGSHAHAKJSEGGAJA/vvpos

SPEAKING OF LEGOLAND & PENNY!!

She. Probably harbors a lot of guilt, going off of all the implications & themeing around her in both LL AND RTC. Penny's shoved around a lot from what we know— even to the point of people burning her backpacks & having to avoid the stairs entirely just so she doesn't get shoved down them, risking breaking something. Yeah, she DEFINITELY has her flaws; but that's honestly what made me connect with her. Even without the flaws, I very deeply related to her as well, just as I did with her inevitable future "self." (If you believe in the LL! Penny = RTC! Penny/Jane Doe thing like I do!!) How she just- kinda attaches herself to her interests & the whole lashing out and fucking MAIMING A GROWN MAN reminded me of myself a lot. (I have not maimed anybody for the record. But I did lash out at other kids and have actually hurt them before. Not severely, but- I'm definitely not proud of it. I had BAD. anger & mood issues.)

OH. And then you discover Ezra's existence!! Which. Makes shit a LOT worse! Adds a lot more potential with how you see Jane Doe as well, along with a LOT of potential for Ezra's character as well. UUGauahah it's always the doomed siblings that get me I totally haven't cried over this damned trope before multiple times wdym

But yeah! There's. So many intricate details about everything— the themeing, the implications, hell- even in the character design & NAMES‼️‼️ (The last name being LAMB is just. Really ironic to me. Lamb to the slaughter,,)

RTC headcanons: Penny/Jane Doe Edition!

FOR CONTEXT! I don’t believe the Penny from RTC is Penny Lamb from Legoland, so headcanons about her will probably be skewed compared to Legoland canon :)

Penny has so many bandaids everywhere. Her arms, her nose, her legs. It’s not that she gets into a bunch of fights but she’s just so clumsy and never looks before she leaps

Penny can play the ukulele, guitar, and violin. She loves string instruments and has had a few duets with Noel

Penny wasn’t always strictly religious, but over time she found comfort in religion. She still supports people outside her religion and is genuinely kind to all

Jane Doe had around a few hours before the rest of the choir was brought to the warehouse, so she asked Karnak who she could possibly be, even trying to get any former fortune he could have given her, only to come up short

When Penny first arrived at Uranium her mothers gave her a new doll. It was a crocheted doll of herself, and although she did adore it, she preferred her parents’ vintage doll with blond curls and big black eyes

When Penny died, she had her doll tucked in her uniform, so Jane Doe, after realizing she was in limbo, found the one thing that she felt drawn to and used it as her own head

Penny is a lesbian, and had the biggest crush on Constance before they died. She also developed a crush on Ricky, but she was too shy to tell either of them

Jane Doe is a cat fanatic, something she doesn’t understand, but Penny loved all breeds of cats and that love made it to Jane

Penny will eat cheese with anything. Like her mac and cheese obsession, she just really loves cheese. The others are genuinely worried for her gut, but she assures them it’s fine (it’s not)

Jane Doe only has feelings relating to Penny’s life, no memories. As such, when she says, “No parents came” a stab of pain shot in her chest, for reasons she never understood

After Penny came back, it took her some time to remember who she was. But as Jane Doe had no recollection of her life, Penny now has no recollection of her death. She doesn’t know why the choir means so much to her if she wasn’t so close with much of them

Penny actually went up to Ricky and signed a little for him when they met. She just signed “Hi, I’m Penny!” and she and Ricky became really fast friends

Penny never understood why Noel loved old French movies, but she does enjoy watching them with him, he gets so excited and dramatic and it makes her laugh

Pen and Mischa never really interacted when they were alive. Sometimes she’d tell him some fun facts and sometimes he’d help her out with bullies, but they didn’t really have that much of a connection

Penny avoided being a subject of Ocean’s superiority complex by just doing whatever she asked, being quick to comply, so Ocean never said anything about her

Penny was bullied a lot for being adopted, but she always brushed it off with a quick-witted response and sometimes she’ll punch someone in the nose

Penny is the definition of luck. Last minute exam studying? She’ll have perfect marks in the end. Forgot something important? There’s always a chance Penny will have it or will find an easy way to get it. Lost something? Penny will look around for .98 seconds and find exactly what you’re looking for

If Pen was incredibly lucky, Janey is incredibly unlucky. As she’s the opposite of Penny, everything around her always fails and never works the way she wishes

Penny’s mothers were devastated when they learned their daughter wasn’t coming back from the fairground. They told everyone in Uranium about Penny, but no one seemed to remember her, or really care. When Penny came back, this never existed as she was surprisingly the sole survivor of the accident

Penny always regretted covering her face in pictures after she came back, because her memories with the choir were few, and any picture she saw of them with her always had her hand or an object covering her face

Jane Doe was aroace, yet felt an urge to be around Constance and Ricky. After Ricky gave her a name, Savannah, a feeling similar to friendship formed in her chest, is if she knew Ricky, as if she cared for them

For Penny’s seventeenth birthday, she had a masquerade-esqe party and asked every guest to wear a mask. The choir complied and came in masks and had a wonderful time. Penny didn’t tell anyone it was because of her hatred of seeing herself in pictures, but when she looked back on the pictures of that night, there was one where all six of the choir’s faces were revealed, including her own, laughing with them. That now is her favorite picture, and she keeps it with her forever

This isn't a request, more of a question (but if you want to write something with this, I'm not complaining :>), but how would the choir react with Penny being bullied (like, more than she already is, I just KNOW a bully is going to lose his life today)

Also, how would they react about her whole past you know, IDK if they even know, but what if they discover about her bipolar and her suicidal and depressed behavior? (I think she was diagnosed with it, right? I don't remember much of Legoland-)

I'm glad I could write that for you, thanks for requesting it! I literally love Penny so much, not to mention I am a huge multi-shipper, so it was a joy to write.

As for how the choir would react to Penny being bullied, I can definitely say their actions to "fix" the problem would vary, but they would all be very upset to learn she is being hurt in any form. I think Ricky, Ocean, and Constance would try to take the more pacifist route, with Noel and Mischa being the opposite.

Ocean would be incredibly pissed but also kind of impressed (in a way that she didn't think anyone would actually attempt to go there). She would use her status as the top student to get them expelled or, if she can, she would probably make them do some kind of community service hours where she could watch and belittle them the whole time.

Ricky, being one of the few disabled kids in St. Cassian, is unfortunately babied by most of the staff. He of course hates this but this is the one situation where this comes in handy, as he can easily just go up to some member of staff and say that the aforementioned bullies are messing with him, thus getting them into some serious trouble with staff and parents alike since they're "bullying" a disabled student.

Constance doesn't have much power within the school unlike Ocean and Ricky, but if there's one thing people in that school know her for, it's for being kind. It really isn't hard for her to slip a few bad words here and there about the bullies and have their reputation drop substantially. She would also use this opportunity to put in a good word for Penny and at least stop some of the rumors.

Noel wants to say he is a calm and collected person, he really does, but watching those bullies spew such hateful words to the one person he cares about makes his blood absolutely boil. He himself has had his fair share of bullying and even if he knows he can tolerate it, he will not tolerate it for Penny. It might take a while, but he is going to make sure that bully feels like the actual scum of the Earth and that the only reason such trash like them are still walking around is because people don't want to get their hands dirty. Noel will push them so hard that they are gonna do some things to themselves they will definitely regret...

Mischa, against all odds, manages to not bash the bully's faces into the pavement the minute he hears that they are even mildly upsetting Penny. But trust him, the moment he finds them (and he will), he is going hurt them so badly that they'll be unrecognizable the next time they walk into school (if they somehow don't end up in the hospital after that-)

Okay, so I have actually never watched Legoland, nor do I know much about it because I can literally not find it anywhere. :') So, I'm sorry if any information about Penny's past is inaccurate.

I can say that the choir all pretty much have the same reactions regarding her past, that reaction being a mix of both anger and sympathy. Although, Ocean, by far, can understand Penny's struggles with drugs and the like considering her own parents, and Mischa can also understand being away from your actual family. Both are very empathic about her situation and being able to relate to her in their traumas really brings them closer to her.

Noel has never been more glad to be considered a brother figure to Penny since hearing of her childhood since at least now she has one family member who she wants to have by her side (minus Ezra). Constance feels so awful that she was keeping that in for so long and that Penny had to go through that in the first place, it just makes her so frustrated that her parents were that irresponsible. All she wants to do is be able to take away that hurt, but she knows she can't, so instead she just tries her best to make new memories with Penny. Ricky would have never guessed in a million years that Penny had to deal with... well all of what was her childhood. He can't say he feels anything other than sympathetic for her having to deal with that stuff, but he is a very live-in-the-moment person and plans to just make her forget all of that with him.

Let's just say though, that if any of them happen to meet her parents, no matter how pacifistic they are, they will have some choice words and actions they want to say/do to them.

ZP has little memory of anything about her life before the incident, but if she sees/hears something or someone relating to her life pre-cyclone she’ll.. very faintly remember it (Ex. JK-47 = bad!! , Ezra = brother,, good!! - not much about why or how but she remembers how she feels)

She still remembers all the stuff from the warehouse - She’s kinda like Jane Doe with her old head back trying to remember who she was

Backstory: When Victoriya was just 10 she and her older brother, Mischa, were put up for adoption due to their mother becoming sick after working as a cleaner in Chernobyl. Little did they know, their adoptive parents were told they were receiving a Ukrainian toddler and Ukrainian infant. Instead they received one teenager and one pre-teen. They were both kept in the basement because they couldn’t just send them back. She co-founded the St. Cassian Coven, which may sound like a cult but it’s really just a midnight vampire roleplay group.

Some random facts abt her

She is neurodivergent and she’s hyperfixated(?)on the Twilight saga.

She made Mischa watch all of the Twilight movies.

In return she watched all of the Saw movies.

Mischa regularly brings her to choir practice because their adoptive parents don’t pick them up from school so Mischa drives them home.

The rest of the choir really likes her.

Except at some point Ocean started to criticize Twilight so she chucked a book at her.

Spoilers- Ride the Cyclone, Undertale. Also Legoland but it technically doesn't exist besides the 1 leaked footage, I will refer to Jane as Penny sometimes.

Jane Doe from RTC and The Myserty Man (Gaster) from Undertale are very alike.

Gaster wasn't decapitated but both he and Jane (Penny) die in what is considered a freak accident. Jane from the Cyclone and Gaster falling into the CORE.

Another thing is that no one can identify them despite people in both fandoms theorizing who these characters might have known. Many who watched RTC and have seen what little we have of Legoland think that Jane/Penny wasn't claimed by her parents as they were in prison for the largest pot grow-opt in a hippie colony near Uranium City. Her brother, Ezra might not have known of the accident or may not have been able to claim the identity of his sister. The only person who could have, Father Marcus, died of a heart attack. All this, along with Penny's head never being found. Fans speculate that Jane and Penny are the same person, but it is unclear whether RTC came first or after, since we don't know if Jane was reincarnated into Penny or she was always Penny. Many fans speculate the latter, however.

As for Gaster, many Undertale fans assume he is related to Sans and Papyrus but there is no canon proof that we know of. The CORE had wiped Gaster from existence. The only living proof of him that has brought all the theories was his entries, specifically entry number 17: Darker, Yet Darker. Many fans theorize that Gaster was speaking to both of the skeleton brothers or possibly Sans and Alphys. Many assume it is Sans and Alphys because Alphys takes over the position of Royal Scientist after he disappears. Unlike Jane, there were Gaster followers who hint at Gaster's existence and what happened to him, but none give a clear canon answer to who he is. It is hinted that Sans and Gaster had a past together but there isn't much on Papyrus. Although there are hints and evidence, Gaster's true alias remains a mystery, even with new hints in the game Deltarune.

Finally, there is a fear of being forgotten hints in both. Jane's is more noticeable, especially during her song, The Ballad of Jane Doe where she sings about wanting to know who she was before she died. Gaster's is more subtle and is not said by him, but by an entity known as Goner Kid. Goner Kid resembles Monster Kid and is most likely a follower of Gaster. His dialogue:

"Have you ever thought about a world where everything is exactly the same...

Except you don't exist*?*

Everything functions perfectly without you...

Ha, ha... The thought terrifies me."

Does have a resemblance to Jane Doe's fact about lions, which could be her subtle way of saying she is terrified of being forgotten after she dies because neither of her parents came to claim or mourn her. Both characters had lives speculated by fans but after an accident died. They would be forgotten by many but fans theorize that some people were associated with them and had not forgotten them.

marley - the fiercest girl in town

zoë - the most earnest girl in town

secret oc - the most miraculous child in town

heather - the snootiest girl in town

none of them die on the cyclone, the rtc ocs are a year or two above so they already graduated! and the legoland ocs have no relation to the cyclone, whether it happens or not they aren't affected

i described their relationships with each other in the previous post so i'll describe their interaction with canon characters!

marley is very close with noel, she's very protective of him. she protected him when he was being bullied badly, she fought off the guys who beat him up and shut down most of it, it started getting worse again when she graduated but she beat them up again! and she stays in uranium to make sure no one tries bullying again. she also protected a lot of other kids who got bullied, including penny. she looked out for the choir a lot, often through noel but she always kept an eye on them to be safe. ricky really likes her and they became friends too, ricky sent her a huge text paragraph describing zolar and she loved it, she keeps a drawing he made of her as a cat princess on her wall above her desk. back to noel - noel looks up to her a lot, it was always their plan to go to paris together and she was the only one he ever told about monique. she's like a big sister to him and he learnt a lot from her, they are very special to me :) <3

zoë knows ocean kind of, they competed for class president once and ocean beat her and made a lot of personal digs that really hurt so zoë kinda hates her ngl 😭 zoë is friends with trishna and hank, marley is friends with astrid and corey and also misha sort of (when marley was still at st cassians they would cross paths when cutting class and ended up having smoke breaks in company. every so often they'll find each other at night in a park or car park, smoking or drinking, and they'll just vent about life and sit in company for a while. they never talk outside of that but there is some friendship there)

The ballad of Jane Doe

Hi everyone, it's your local demon but you can call me Sol :) Here's an analysis of (or just things I noticed) The Ballad of Jane Doe from Ride the Cyclone. Spoiler warning for the latter ahead.

Something that a lot of people have talked about already is that while this song is called a ballad, it's actually a lament (mirroring Noel's Lament which isn't a lament, but a ballad). A ballad is a song that tells a story while a Lament is to express grief, regret or mourning. The members of the choir sing about their lives and pull on the lever, revealing pictures of them alive, to show that they were once someone before the accident that brutally ended their short lives. And obviously, Penny cannot do that since she has no story to tell "And no story, what a shame." We'll circle back to that later, moving on.

In the first verse, Penny talks about how people try to console themselves in grief. "Some might say, we're released, Pushing daisies, deceased, But we all know the worms must be fed." Us humans have a natural habit of trying to make sense of things that we don't know because the unknown scares us. That includes using flowery language (literally) to talk about death. Penny is very blunt and doesn't sugarcoat things, and that doesn't change when she's talking about the gross details of death, such as rotting in a box 6 feet deep in the ground.

That carries onto the second verse "There's just one - lingering fear, Oh my soul - is it here, Or is it rotting somewhere with my head?" Here's a fun fact for those who haven't picked up on it yet, Penny's head throughout the musical isn't hers, but actually her doll's eyeless head. Someone (I can't remember who, if I do I'll tag them) pointed out that Penny's eyes may be blacked out as a reference to the saying "Eyes are the window of the soul" so I guess that answers Penny's question.

To get back at the story bit I put a pause on earlier, here's the fifth verse. "Oh no soul, and no name, was cruel existence only a sham?" I love the specific use of the word "sham" here, because Jane Doe and John Doe are called Sham names, previously only used in court. Since Penny can't remember who she was before her death, the only existence she's ever known is who she is now, nothing more than a Jane Doe, a cruel existence.

Moving on to the sixth verse, "Oh Saint Peter, let me in! You must know where I've been, Won't you tell me at last who I am?" We see some bits of Penny's backstory slip through the more she talks, just like now. The Lamb siblings used to be homeschooled, as told in the description/summary of "Legoland". Most homeschooled kids are actually religious, and are homeschooled so their parents can control their religious beliefs. On that note, Penny being homeschooled is probably the reason why no one came to identify her body, since she was wearing a high school uniform and her parents assumed it couldn't have been their daughter.

The seventh verse is a little more unclear "And from the ground, beneath my feet, I hear the anguish of the street." I think it's about her being trapped between heaven and hell, and she hears the pain of potential sinners in hell. That, or the anguish she hears come from the people she once knew but can't remember, or the families of the rest of the choir. If you've got any theories, feel free to drop them below.

The eighth verse speaks for itself, "A choir never complete" the choir isn't complete without Penny, and now that she has been revived and the rest of them stay dead, that statement carries on until the very end of the story.

Moving on to the ninth verse, "And like an old, forgotten tune, A song that no one knows, Forgot how it goes, Just John and me, Forever eternally, Jane Doe." Penny refers to herself as a song, tune, melody or anything music related, that people forget as time passes (remember that bit about time, I'll also circle back to that in the next verse.)

The iconic tenth verse "And I'm asking 'why Lord? If this is how I die Lord, why be left with no family and no friends? I've got no celebration, just this consolation. Time eats all his children in the end.'" Once again, we have religious language coming from Penny. She doesn't celebrate the state that she's in between life and death, she sees it more as a consolation. Lastly, Penny refers to herself as a song, tune or melody lost to time.

Onto the twelfth and last verse analysis "A melody, floats through the air, When silence falls, does no one care? Does anyone care?" She's referring to how when she "floated through the air" ("flied" during her death in the coaster.) and died, no one cared. Nobody came to identify her body, they couldn't find her head, and after the event died down, everyone stopped caring about that nameless girl, because no one knew who she was.

(Also I'm sorry if I misunderstood- it's also 4am and my reading comprehension could just be like, bad lol). But in a previous answer you mentioned something like "seemingly very light and cheery compared to og classic Xiyouji" in regards to LMK SWK contributing to writing jttw in the lmk world? I thought og classic xiyouji had a pretty good end though (with the tang monk and swk attaining buddhahood and I can't remember the others atm but they all got something). Again I'm sorry if I misunderstood? Also sorry if some of my words are wrong- 4 am and English isn't my strong suit. But thank you for everything!

Aw, thank you so much anon! I'm glad you've been getting some joy from my silly little posts. BUT ANYWAY what I meant by Journey to the West likely being more light and cheery in Monkie Kid than og classic Journey to the West was that even though it has a good ending there is a LOT of death, blood, violence, torture, warfare, etc. etc. etc. in Wu Cheng'en's work that for obvious reasons wouldn't be part of a kid's show. Sun Wukong didn't earn the title of "Buddha Victorious in Strife" for nothing! More specifically, there's been a lot of hints throughout the lego show that very important, and very violent, parts of Xiyouji were either heavily edited or even removed completely. As a number of people have pointed out, for example, in Monkie Kid the Six Eared Macaque seemed pretty nervous about even mentioning his full name to Qi Xiaotian (he is after all the dude who's infamous for trying to murder-replace the Monkey King!). But Qi Xiaotian, despite being a massive Monkey King fanboy, has no idea who this simian even is! This heavily suggests that the True and False Monkey King section of Journey to the West was either at some point removed or was never even included in the Xiyouji of legoland. The same is true with the Lady Bone Demon. Sun Wukong knew immediately who she was (having fought and defeated her before) but it seems that basically no one else did until she started to make her presence known. Even Tang Shifu--the character positioned as a literal scholar of all things Journey to the West related--first mentions the Flame of Samadhi being wielded by "a demon whose name I forgot," even though the battle between Sun Wukong and Red Boy remains to this day one of the most well-known fights in Xiyouji. And while this change is very understandable for a sequel to Journey to the West aimed at children, it must be remembered too that while the Sun Wukong of legoland stated that he gained his power and reputation through "beating up" a lot of yaoguai, in the og classic he just uuuuuuhhhh mostly smashed them into "meat patties," as is the classic's common phrase.

One of the things that makes Journey to the West such a fascinating work is the way people have been able to use it as the basis for both stories aimed at little kids as well as grimdarkiest works you can imagine. But Monkie Kid is potentially doing something pretty interesting by implying that many of the more morally complex, discomfiting, and violent stories were removed from the versions of this classic that made it into future legoland, the consequences of which have been pretty significant in a kind of "those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it" way. As it is, both Sun Wukong and Sha Dali (who it's implied is Sha Wujing himself) are strongly hinted to be recovering from some pretty painful past events, with the Monkey King inadvertently causing a lot of trouble by repeating many of his past behaviors from the journey by hiding his trauma behind a cheerful and carefree attitude and going to great lengths to not tell anyone what's going on while he runs himself ragged trying to solve everything by himself (unlike Sha Dali, who actually acknowledged that he needed professional help to overcome his trauma and anger issues and has been working quite successfully to keep his temper in check, one result of which is that he seems very comfortable and happy to work within a group).

I hope that that this makes sense and answers your question anon, but of course let me know if I need to go a little further into how I think the Journey to the West of Monkie Kid has been implied to differ in important ways from the Journey to the West of our own world!

The new Lego set includes too many pieces to count and a manual too difficult for the four-year-old to read. The pictured King’s Castle on the box brings wonder, but not enough for the stubborn boy to stick to the instructions or ask for help. Either way, blocks lock on together by able hands and his imagination runs far too wild to be tamed by boring words and numbers.

It wasn’t playful excitement that had him push past his dad and run past you, with your hands on your hips as your eyes flew from him to Billy, but rather a desperate eagerness to escape what is now taking place on the other side of his bedroom door.

“You forgot Jason in your car for two hours!”

Your muffled words pierce through Jason’s crayola-scribbled bedroom door. That tone in your voice is always reserved just for his father; it’s never been directed at your son even when he’s worn your patience thin by throwing a tantrum when Looney Tunes hadn’t been on TV while your feet were sore from wearing pumps at work all day.

Jason knows that this is only the beginning of an endless night.

The wires in his brain steer him to focus on the Legos he had been begging his parents to buy ever since he’d first seen the commercial on television. He’d asked and asked and asked but the answer was always a prolonged no.

There were far too many excuses his parents would give him that it was tough for his little head to wrap around the truth. The pieces proved hazardous for a child his age, you’d tell him. They weren’t sold in the stores in their town, Billy’d tell him. They were sold out last time you checked and were waiting for a restock, but, in reality, the price had driven you away. Billy simply just hadn’t seen any around―not that he was actually looking.

“Don’t tell me he was safe! You ditched our son to have drinks with fucking Perry!”

But, what had been the truth? After being strapped in with a seat belt with no form of entertainment except for watching strangers stroll by the sidewalk in front of the bar every now and then, Billy had returned to the car with a quick stride and a nervous twitch to his eyebrow. No apology. No explanation to the boy who was promised his father wouldn’t be gone long. Nothing that made any bit of sense except the drive to Target, and finding out that Legoland sets hadn’t been in some faraway land like Jason had been growing to believe and that his father had no problem pulling out a wad of bills from his pocket to pay for it. So why did his parents lie?

The knight figure has quickly become the favored piece as Jason mounts it on a horse, charging it against another figure he decided was the enemy in this private battle. A whoosh pushes past thin lips as the impact between plastic erupts, the enemy crashing against the carpet a few feet away.

Brain waves continue to buzz through his trickling veins in a vain attempt, like palms pumping against a dwindling chest, to keep his spirit from retreating into a cocoon. It seems to be working as the proud digits on his bedside table flick through the evening even though his heart isn’t fully invested in the activity.

“I didn’t mean to―”

“And yet you decided to get behind the wheel with our four year old son while who knows how drunk you were―”

“I wasn’t fuckin’ drunk…now will you keep your fucking voice down?”

Jason doesn’t know that his toy collection is decent at best. He has yet to start Kindergarten, so he doesn’t know many children his age to compare. The only children he knows belong to Billy’s co-workers down at the mechanic shop and yours from the restaurant you waitress at, but even then, most of the kids are too old to want to play with him whenever they visit.

If only he was old enough to read all the clear signs right in front of him. His parents are living paycheck to paycheck, and they just don’t have the heart to tamper his blissful ignorance with such a heavy burden.

“No, because it’s always the same thing with you! Is that what was normal when you were growing up? Butter up the kid with gifts bought with rent money every time your dad screwed up?!”

Small fingers loosen around the knight in matte armor and it’s white horse, falling out of Jason’s clutch. His sleeveless forearms rise past the Hulk logo printed across his chest as his palms cup his ears.

Your rambling is long and far too scrambled for Jason, yet certain words are stressed enough to slither down the hallway, slip through the cracks of the bedroom, and nail your sole pride and joy. Even when he doesn’t fully understand why these words hurt him.

The mention of possible family members who never call nor visit is part of the void that breathes between his fragile shoulders. He only had pictures tucked away under his parents’ bed in some weathered album. The faces had names he often forgot, and some even had titles of relation, but that’s about the extent of the knowledge you indulged him in. It hurt you too much to go any further and explain why your and Billy’s little family lived states away from everyone, but you handle it better than Billy who only ever changes the subject with a flick of his eyes whenever your boy asks about the redheaded women who’re pictured with an older man with a mustache who oddly resembles his father.

The photograph had been hidden in the last page of the photo album in which Jason had discovered on his own after flipping through the empty pages. The expressions of the three mysterious figure are anything but happy, yet the women do not send shivers crawling up his spine like the stern-looking man does. Jason knows he doesn’t like him, whoever he may be.

“Why don’t you just come out with it and say what you really mean?”

Behind the door, with ears taped closed by stiff fingers and eyes sewn shut by quaking muscles, Jason isn’t aware that Billy’s slammed a palm against the kitchen counter, nostrils flared and protruding vein on the side of his jugular, nor that you’ve merely dismissed a flushed Billy with nothing more but the shake of your head and an apologetic frown etched on your weary face.

Jason opens his eyes and drops his fingers, kneading the fibers of the carpet for a moment, when his bedroom door opens and your bare feet slip through the crack.

Standing before him with the doorknob pressed against the lumbar of your spine as your hands rest on the bronze, you don’t look a day over twenty-two, perhaps you even look a little younger. But, not to your son’s untrained gaze. To him, you and Billy look like just any other boring adult who has presumably completed high school, gotten their degree, and are now living their best course.

Instead, you and Billy are thousands of miles away from those who were meant to support and love you unconditionally, family and even friends alike. You both packed up whatever you could fit in the Camaro on a school night, cashed out whatever savings were available, and set out on a journey to Billy’s hometown.

Your knees sink onto the floor beside your little boy and you look at the mess of scattered miniature blocks. When you pick up a stray Lego and attach it to the clump in front of Jason, he speaks up, “Are you taking the toy back?”

“No,” you shake you head, “It’s yours, baby.”

You envelop him in your arms and kiss his curly crown. “This is the one you’ve wanted?” you ask even though you already know by the amount of begging he squeezed out of his lungs the past month.

“Mmhmm,” Jason nods against your sternum.

He pulls away after another second or so, peering up at you through curls that fall over his forehead. “Are you still mad at dad?”

A little bit, you think. Frustrated, definitely. It’s no longer about the money, especially not after walking in on Jason playing with the guilt-tripped gift. Picking up a few extra shifts is worth it if it means you can pull a few more grins out of Jason. But, no, the frustration comes from watching Billy constantly stomp on egg shells when it comes to being a father.

By no means are you a supermom―you’re still learning how to parent every single day―but at least you aren’t forgetting about your precious baby in the backseat of a car just to abandon responsibilities for a few hours. No, you’ve been holding it together since the minute you sat in the passenger seat and Billy shifted the gear back in Hawkins. It just seems that no matter how much you and Jason mean to Billy, it’s in his nature to rebel in some form―even when he knows the guilt is only a step away.

The acts that keep him from conforming into a father he’d wished he had as an adolescent could be something as mundane as bringing home a carton of low-fat milk when you had specifically said two-percent twice before. Billy just couldn’t get it right, and you didn’t know if it was somehow on purpose or not.

Before you could respond to Jason’s question, Billy enters. Ruby no longer rushes up his neck nor speckles across his cheeks in angry splotches.

Billy’s thick eyelashes flutter towards you and Jason, and he knows that you have every right to feel as you do, to yell at him as you did, and walk away before the argument could escalate to places he doesn’t want to imagine. And, he knows that you had just been a hairbreadth away from speaking it into existence, that Billy had inherited some of the qualities that made him hate his own father in the first place. He doesn’t think he could ever handle that.

He kneels down near the two of you, tucks a loose strand behind your ear, and ruffles Jason’s fluffly head of hair. “Hey buddy, you wanna continue reading the Hulk?”

Billy’s never been a fan of comic books, but Jason enjoyed the noises, the voices, and sometimes the acting that Billy did when he read to him. Max had given her older step-brother a few of her old copies before he left as a gift to her future niece or nephew she’d probably never get to know. She’s just another faceless shadow that will haunt every dark corner Jason comes across.

Your boy shakes his head and reaches out for the blocks he had formed to resemble what he thinks is a fort. “I just want to play.”

Jason goes to pick up the knight with the horse as Billy’s fingers caresses your knuckles before holding your hand in his own. Your gaze meets Billy’s, and somewhere in the blue of his pupils he’s apologizing without further dragging Jason into the mess. You nod and give him a small smile, hoping that Billy can see that you’re sorry too.

The King’s Castle box lays on the carpet a few feet away. Billy reaches for it and pulls out the instructions. “You want mommy and me to help you?”

“Yeah!” It’s the best idea Jason’s heard all day.

You glance back at Jason’s clock. It’s almost seven and you haven’t prepared anything since you’ve gotten a call by Gwen who told you she’d seen Jason in the car by himself in front of Stokey’s, Billy’s and his co-workers’ place to meet. By the time you’d gotten there, Billy and Jason had already left. “What about dinner?”

“I’ll call Domino’s in a bit,” Billy says as he reads some of the instructions.

You pinch Jason’s cheek then begin to gather the stray pieces that surround his bent knees. “You wanna help me get all the pieces together, hmm?”

Soon, all the blocks except for the yellow figures lie in a pile between the three of you as Billy begins describing the pieces needed to begin building the foundation of the kingdom.

You both know that there will be more bumps down the road, even Jason knows these moments don’t last forever. In the following years, Jason will realize the truth, in which imperfections haven’t expanded as he’s aged but that they’ve been sprinkled all over his home all along, waiting to finally be uncovered one by one.

Jason’s grin grows when Billy makes the horse gallop, letting out a horrendous neigh in the process and prompting you to jokingly throw a Lego or two at his head.

Happiness envelops the three, but that cannot be said for tomorrow or even next week without spilling a lie. Something will happen to drag everyone down, and it’ll be up to them to build everything up again. But this, this memory is engraved and will forever stay the same among stains that cannot be scrubbed off.
