They way my Winter Velvet Barbie (In a Fashion Avenue fit) feels like a childhood doll even though I've only had her for a few years and didn't grow up with dolls. She just feels kinda special that way.

Kerr Avon's costumes, rated
The sequel to Romana II's costumes, rated, here by popular* request! (*maybe not very popular.)
Screengrabs from here (copied rather than linked per their FAQs). Invaluable record of what Avon actually wears in which episode from here. I haven't included overcoats, spacesuits, or anything Avon doesn't actively choose to wear, like prison clothes. Which means that rating this monstrosity
Tumblr media
is left as an exercise for the reader.
I've also not done every single variation on black jackets with studded panels, even when they are technically different black jackets with studded panels, because otherwise we'd be here all night.
Tumblr media
As seen in Space Fall and Cygnus Alpha.
Ugh. It's fine. The heights of bonkersness that Blake's 7 costume design would reach are not even really hinted at here. It's a perfectly reasonable outfit - grey shirt, grey trousers, grey tabard-thing. Add a name badge and Avon could be stocking shelves in a fancy supermarket. I'll allow that it does look comfortable, which will not be a theme of much else on this list. 5/10.
Tumblr media
As seen in Time Squad.
I don't hate the brown patchwork thing (though brown is rightly Blake's colour), but what's going on with the larger square over his stomach? I feel like he's about to do some welding or something and it's there to protect his clothes, but it is his clothes. Avon only wore this outfit once, and who can blame him? 2/10.
Tumblr media
As seen in The Web, Seek-Locate-Destroy, Mission to Destiny, Duel, Project Avalon, Breakdown, and Deliverance.
I think this one may have suffered from the passage of time. Because I look at it and think, why has Avon chosen to dress like an old-fashioned stereo system? But from the vantage point of 1978, I guess Avon had chosen to dress like a decidedly modern stereo system. Look at those rounded corners, he could be a first-gen iPod. And the matching grey of collar and cuffs is a nice touch. None of this answers the question of why he has buttons across his tits, but there are some things that are not for us to know. 8/10.
Tumblr media
As seen in Bounty and Orac.
Oooh, green. Green is a nice change. And if you're watching Blake's 7 and you're enjoying those green sleeves, you'd better make the most of them, because other than one very notable exception, this is the last time that Avon wears an outfit that isn't brown, white, black or shades of grey for the entire rest of the series. The rest of it looks a bit like someone's Star Trek Discovery uniform cosplay got out of hand. 6/10, because green.
Tumblr media
As seen in Redemption and Killer.
Obviously, this is a classic. And full marks to Paul Darrow for wearing a costume that was literally bought from a sex shop and making it look like something that anyone might wear to their normal day of fighting oppression and engaging in homoerotic tension. 10/10.
Tumblr media
As seen in Shadow, Horizon, Gambit, and Children of Auron.
OK fine I threw away the term "classic" too soon, this is the true classic, the time Avon decided to dress as a thermal blanket and then pair that with thigh-high boots. ICONIC. What I love about this is aside from being batshit, it's actually kind of a nice outfit? I imagine that shiny fabric was absolute hell to work with but the gathering at the shoulders means it hangs surprisingly well.
It also gains at least 5 bonus points for featuring in this, one of my all-time favourite Blake's 7 moments:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wish I could find it as a gif, but you'll just have to join me in pretending these images are moving instead. And in heaving a nostalgic sigh for the era when men were allowed to have normal bodies on TV. 15/10.
Tumblr media
As seen in Shadow.
I've tried to go for just one main outfit per episode, because this is already very long and we're only about halfway through. But I had to make an exception for matching! outfits! And all the better for being an outfit that looks great on all three of them. I only wish that Avon could have had some silver boots like Jenna is wearing, I think it would really have completed the look. 9/10.
Tumblr media
As seen in Weapon, Pressure Point, Countdown, and Dawn of the Gods.
In some ways, this costume is quite practical. Avon is wearing something not a million miles from bikers' leathers here, and the quilted part of the chest and back would presumably offer him a bit of protection if he got into a fight. But also, it's the colour and style of a brothel sofa, and there's no way in hell he could wear this and retain the ability to lift his arms above his head.
God, I love this show. 10/10.
Tumblr media
As seen in Trial, Hostage, Voice From the Past, The Keeper, Star One, Aftermath, and Powerplay.
I have less to say about this because - and I mean this in full tribute to the Blake's 7 costume designers - it's just a nice jacket! It stays in keeping with the design trends we see throughout the series, with panels of different fabrics, and spacewear shiny silver bits, but ultimately you could wear this on the street today and no one would give you a second look. I quite like that about it. 8/10.
Tumblr media
As seen Aftermath. (And the loose black shirt in Voice From the Past is similar too).
Maybe this is just my mid-00s goth-adjacent phase showing through, but I am, and always will be, a sucker for a man in this kind of shirt. 8/10, please don't make me justify this further.
Tumblr media
As seen in Volcano and Rumours of Death.
The first of many similar black outfits, where I'm going to be selective or this will get tedious very quickly. I think this is the best of them; after this, the 80s started up in earnest, and Avon's shoulders were never allowed to be their natural width again. 9/10.
Tumblr media
As seen in The Harvest of Kairos.
My parents haven't been camping in years, but somewhere in the attic they still have an old tent, which lives in a bag that looks a lot like this outfit. As if I needed any more reasons to dislike The Harvest of Kairos. 1/10.
Tumblr media
As seen in Ultraworld.
Avon what are you doing. Brown is not your colour. I think I might headcanon that this is Blake's jacket, because aside from the brownness it also seems to be a fair bit too big for Avon. After a couple of seasons of squeezing him into the lobster outfit and other tight leather things, the costume designers seem to have swerved hard into boxy shapes from this point onwards. I disapprove. Honestly, I was going to skip this one except that I love what Dayna is wearing. Wish Avon could have some of that energy. 2/10.
Tumblr media
As seen in Death-Watch.
Let's pause for a second, look to the left, and appreciate that Dayna is wearing another fabulous outfit. Now let's take a deep breath, and look at the utter monstrosity that Avon is wearing. Like a matador crossed with a bumper car. 0/10.
Tumblr media
As seen in Rescue, Power, Traitor, Stardrive, Animals, Headhunter, Orbit, Warlord, and Blake.
Avon wears some kind of black jacket with studs for nearly all of season D, but I've picked this as the definitive one. I don't know if there's some kind of clever character development thing going on here with how big this costume is, like Avon is expanding into his leadership role, but weighed down by the responsibility too. It could be deliberate, it could just be what fashion was like in the early 80s.
What I do know is that however meaningful this costuming might be, it's not flattering. 5/10, and Avon finishes the series, sadly, no better dressed than he began it.

anyways love this, definitely different from their current scent vibe. moonlight path was originally from the mid to late 2000s and it definitely smells of its time! it’s a soft baby powder clean and cozy white musk. it gives nostalgic avon vibes in the good way. it doesn’t have the bright fresh citruses that other white musks have, it’s denser and more sweet and vanillic, like a soft blanket. oh ya i HATE the current packaging btw. for some reason that label irks me and almost made me not try it… but i saw it get compared to avon night magic evening musk so i had to try… this is exactly the kind of scent i’m looking for in my body spray era. it’s not trying to be complex it’s not trying to be like a perfume. it’s staying in its damn place and being a great body spray that can be worn alone after a bubble bath or layered with a real perfume. smells like grandma’s talcum powder. applied with a big powder puff !.. i guess that’s why i hate the label. it looks like it’s trying to be ariana grande but it’s really ariana grandma.. that label doesn’t evoke vintage comfort at awl.. whys it silver.. and blue.. it’s clearly a baby pink and cream and white and soft lavender smell

Beep boop! I'm the tag game bot.
Post the first 250 words of your current WIP and tag as many people as you want!
oh!!!
so, this is from almost two years ago when i was writing fics for the queen's gambit. this is also from the time i had slowed down a bit, the reason unknown to me, and left so many fics incomplete. it makes me so, so sad. anyways. you said 250 but i'll make it 300 (because the fic is that short and i want to share it somewhere, anywhere—)
feel free to comment on/critique/say anything about this unfinished mess.
tagging: @tarttism, @marmotts, @avon-leas, @ anybody who wants to share a part of their current WIP!!! if you ever want to do so, do not hold back please. <3 tell them i tagged you!
The room was filled with the odor of wilted honeysuckles and dead roses carried through brocade draperies blowing in the soft breeze, the heavy fabric sending particles of dust spiraling at a languid pace whose motion echoed of cascades and whirlwinds in which laws of physics did not exist. The muffled staccato of a piano upstairs infused the air, filling the distance between two figures that, physically speaking, was not so long. However, each time he took a step forward so he could make sure she was really here, with him — his Liza, his beautiful, talented Liza — she just got smaller and smaller, her body reduced into a pinprick until she was nothing but a ghost in his memory, the hazy image of her arm reaching towards him threatening to haunt him forever.
So, he did not look at her. Despite the Herculean effort it required, he avoided her eyes whenever he felt them burning deep holes into his nape, and focused on her voice travelling through oceans of time and space that echoed inside the walls of his brain.
“I saw you in my dreams.”
The man did not understand this. He couldn’t. How could he? Instead, his mind played a game of confabulation as it always would whenever he found himself in a dead-end. His mind automatically replaced the voice with her images instead.
So, he did not speak to her. Slowly, her voice that sounded like a sonic explosion got subsumed, and he dove deeper into his mind palace where she resided, lounged on a divan like a goddess divine.
She was born from the chaos between the antiquity and novelty. There was something quaint, even nostalgic about her devil-may-care attitude that reminded him of poetry and time-soft photographs. Yes, yes, he thought; she was the eternal grace.

I had been following the blog posts that Meg Cabot had been posting during the early stages of the pandemic, so I was pretty interested in reading this book, even though I don't really have much interest in reading pandemic books in general.
Overall, this was a pretty lighthearted, nostalgic read. I enjoyed the feeling that you were catching up with these characters as Mia had to navigate the progressively more ridculous situations that her friends (and sometimes her) would get themselves into.
However, while there were many challenges that Mia faced that were based in real-life problems (anti-maskers, anti-vaxxers, and protesters on mandates) that were resolved in a very fairytale-esque way. If you're looking for something more realistic, this book might not be for you.
A thank you to Avon and Harper Voyager, Avon Impulse, and NetGalley for the ARC.

Snowfall and scissorhands
[I wrote this little memory piece on Christmas Eve ten years ago. Obviously, the world has changed a lot since 2012. My ways of looking at this world have changed, too. But some things remain bittersweetly the same. So here I am again revisiting places in my mind, memories in this blog. Here’s a slightly revised version of that piece for these changed and changing times.]
Edward Scissorhands will always be my Christmas movie, my winter’s tale. It begins on a snowy evening with a little girl being put to bed by her grandmother. She asks, “Why is it snowing, Grandma? Where does it come from?” And the old woman tells her the story of how a strange, lonely creature continues to do his thing—making the most of his solitude by creating ice sculptures, letting the crystal shavings fly out the windows of his castle, showering the world with magic that eventually melts.
But I’m telling this tale the wrong way. I’m loading it with my usual baggage. Loneliness, solitude, impermanence, hmm . . . Let me put it this way instead. Once there was a great inventor who lived alone in a castle on top of a mountain. His grandest design would have been a human being to stand tall among his cookie-cutters, his other gadgets and gizmos. Two hands (you know, those things with fingers, palms, and wrists) would have been his Christmas gifts to Edward, his work in progress. Sadly, before Edward is completed, his maker dies. From then on, the poor unfinished creation has to fend for himself, with crucial parts missing. He is stuck with scissorhands, which can create art and inflict pain.
Nah. That’s not it, either. Director Tim Burton and screenwriter Caroline Thompson would stab me with scissors (or pins or icepicks or whatever comes in handy) to deflate all this so-full-of-myself babble. The truth is, I’m so full of fond memories of this film. Memories of the kind Avon lady (Dianne Wiest) rescuing Edward (Johnny Depp) from that dark castle and taking him home to her family and her neighborhood of gossipy wives and bored husbands. Memories of Edward as a Goth-inspired Charlie Chaplinesque man-child, landscape gardener, hairstylist, sex object, TV celebrity, and town scapegoat. Memories of him as the ultimate Rorschach inkblot test—a blank screen onto which a whole town can project its hopes and fears, ambiguities and contradictions. He’s pure innocence and/or a double-edged sword. He’s a Christ figure and/or the scourge of Satan. He’s Frankenstein’s monster and/or a portrait of the artist as an ageless semi-human.
I’m fond of that scene in which Kim (Winona Ryder), the Avon lady’s teenage daughter, takes a break from decorating the Christmas tree and goes out into the yard to find Edward high up on a ladder, sculpting a huge ice angel. She is thrilled to look up, her arms lifted and palms open to the falling swirls and specks of ice shavings. She dances under this momentary fountain. In Danny Elfman’s glorious music, I hear a chorus of lost souls lamenting all the things that are fleeting. But I also let some of the rapture overflow into my head. Until, as in Edward’s case, it’s time to run back to the dark castle, where I can continue to do my thing—chiseling my way through the cold, hard truths.
Like Edward, we all just want to be loved despite our bad-hair days, our ugly scars, and these hands that can both caress and cut. “You can’t touch anything without destroying it,” Kim’s jealous boyfriend (Anthony Michael Hall) snarls at Edward. Sounds like nature accusing us humans. Or like any self-blaming person looking in the mirror. Like Edward, we sometimes feel like parts of us are missing—we’re incomplete. We yearn for things we never had. Or we’re nostalgic for parts of us we used to have. I know these are not exactly the kind of Christmas sentiments we need right now. I really have to find a better way of telling this story. Or maybe sometimes there is no story to tell. Snow falls, ice melts, the world spins. Time passes, that’s all.
Meanwhile, I think of Edward up there alone. I imagine him still alive, snipping away at chunks of ice to perfect his sculptures or trimming leaves and twigs to shape his topiaries. It’s enough to make me want to open my arms and hold out my hands for remains of ice. Yes, true story: even I have learned to live with what sometimes feels like endless snowfall. As Grandma says in the end, “Sometimes you can still catch me dancing in it.”

• ARC Review: Secretly Yours •
There's something about Tessa Bailey's writing that feels nostalgic – it's all classic tropes and storylines that feel a bit like a throwback, but she always manages to find ways to turn romance clichés into fresh, funny, and very steamy storylines.
When I first started "Secretly Yours," I was honestly a little worried – the characters seemed too one-dimensional, the plot seemed a bit flimsy, the tropes tired. But I shouldn't have been concerned.
The characters quickly went from flat to multidimensional, the plot kicked into gear, and the dialogue? The things that come out of Julian's mouth will make you blush in public, no matter how much of a straight face you usually keep when reading.
Overall, this is a fun and fizzy romance read that'll have you laughing, swooning, sweating, and sighing as you devour it in one sitting.
And yes, it *is* best paired with a bottle of your favorite (Napa Valley) wine.
3.5🌟

Avon, which begin in 1886, are filing for Chapter 11 (bankruptcy). I think if you're a child from the 70s or 80s, you knew someone who sold Avon. You probably even flipped through one of the little catalogues. It's a bit of a childhood gone by.
But before you get nostalgic about it, know that:
It doesn't affect the US-based Avon, which is owned by a different company, and
2. The reason the non-US company is filing Chapter 11 is to avoid/settle over 200 lawsuits involving their use of talcum powder in their eye shadow and face powders; talcum is a mineral that has been linked to cancer.
Yeah, there's that.
Interestingly, no one I knew who bought from Avon bought (facial) beauty products. It was always perfume in oddly shaped bottles and fake jewelry.
ANNOUNCER: Next in the WayBack Machine, we'll talk about Tupperware!
