i'm very happy with today! i Saw A Live Art done by one of my lovely and talented friends and did a ton of laundry such that, for the first time since before i moved, i do not have a Sad Pile Of Laundry. there is no sad pile. there is only definitely clean laundry and laundry that has not yet received a verdict of "dirty." (alas, i did not get stains out of my clothes. not sure what to do with that. an Oxy/Tide pen seems like the next step, i guess? but a) that's more money and b) good god they smell.) i got some good mending done and started/worked on Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye audiobook.

i feel like i am coming to the end of some of my tasks and it's time to take on new tasks.

my style word of the year for 2022 was magic and for 2023 it was flourescent. i haven't set one for 2024 yet, but i feel like i really have been flowering lately. i'm living on my own! i'm having so much fun picking groceries and cooking and sharing my food with people. i set goals and then met them. i've sent my work out into the world and i'll see how people respond. i'm, like, teaching kids??? if you told me i would be willingly working with kids and finding it meaningful and even enjoyable a year ago, i would have laughed at you. i have friends IN PERSON and have MADE NEW FRIENDS LATELY. fucking A. i really do love being alive.

i want to live a good life. i think my life is pretty good, actually, but i'd like to be less stressed and to do more engaging projects/actually feel on top of the projects i already engage in

- my job is. like. hard actually

- MONEY IS A CONCERN (putting off second job/increased freelancing for the moment but maybe i shouldn't because of:)

- i'm gonna run out of ADHD meds again and also, like, headache meds, if i do not secure an in-state PCP and psych. medical trauma has me shaking and trembling at the prospect of seeing a PCP but i would also. like to continue having meds. so i need to a) call a bunch of people b) find someone with availability soon and c) pay a bunch of money to feel bad to access care

- i should also get my teeth professionally cleaned and make sure i don't have cancer. uuggggghhhhhhh

concerns:

- my poetry collaborator is going to have a busy season so we have Limited Time to get work done, which means i need to be *on* Fridays, which also means being on Thursday evenings, which is. hard as fuck actually. how do i maximize this limited time to be Maximally Fun and also (ideally) useful? remembering that use requires, like, extra work on my end (that i'm behind on)?

[background app season dread. i think if i keep myself busy enough i can ignore this till the first news breaks, which will hopefully be no earlier than February and, in an ideal world, will just take up one week of my attention in March. who knows tho]

- i need another cool skirt (RIP badly stained skirt) and i would love to *make one*

- i sleep better when i take my meds before 9. i like to cook for 2-3 hours. i get home at 4. i want at least an hour to rest after getting home. how do i make the math math. cook at 5:30, end 8:30, take meds, go to bed? is that the path? then *how do i call friends*? (ofc i could cook less but i actually really like making a Feast. chutneys in advance should help some; i could freeze ginger + green chili cubes, probably; ???)

other thoughts:

- i really do not want to get sick. so. wear your mask more when it isn't essential that your students see your mouth, order more masks + reuse them less, eat a lot of vitamin C i guess, and try the saline spray your mom gave you!

- i still need floss before i run out. call the post office real quick tomorrow and maybe make a quest of it?? and if that fails. just. re-order it. alas. still. one must. you got a refund! you can ship it elsewhere this time! it's just all *so* annoying

- THIS FRIDAY THE FOOD BANK WILL BE ACCESSIBLE TO YOU SO FUCKING *GO.* try to get flour, at least. oil if possible. produce etc is great but staples are more expensive for me

- i really want my other art to feel Framed, actually, and i think it's been keeping my from hanging any of the stuff my friends have made for me up on my walls. consider options (cunty gallery wall; thrifting; raiding J+A's stock; ???)

Olá, Vizinhança. 

Não gosto de rankings. Eu tinha o costume de fazer rankings de músicas, artistas e álbuns que gosto na minha conta privada do instagram. Hoje, acredito que é meio prepotente acreditar que posso escolher os cinco, dez, vinte ou quantos números mais sejam, dos melhores de algo. Então vamos mudar hábitos e agora, a partir do primeiro texto sobre leituras do meu ano, serão apenas listas de cinco - ou quantos números mais sejam. 

Essa é uma lista de seis álbuns de 2024. Lançados no ano último ano e que fizeram, ativamente, parte do meu ano. 

Don’t Forget Me. Por Maggie Rogers.

Emotivo e melancólico como todo indie pop feito pela Maggie, “Don’t Forget Me” tem faixas como “So Sick of Dreaming” e “On & On & On”, minhas duas favoritas. Além de cantora, Maggie também é produtora e compositora, o que me faz ter um carinho ainda maior por tudo que ela tem a oferecer. Gosto muito de artistas que não só cantam o que criam para eles. 

Apesar de ter uma quantidade sólida de ouvintes por mês no Spotify, Maggie, que ficou conhecida quando Pharrell Williams tocou sua música “Alaska”, recomendo ela, em um seminário, não é tão conhecida no Brasil. Espero que 2025 mude esse fato.

Amaríssima. Por Melly. 

Amaríssima é um afro pop com um toque de r&b gostoso que é a cara de Salvador. Falando muito de sentimentos românticos e o desconforto de amadurecer, Melly não podia lançar um álbum de estreia melhor. Bandida é minha faixa favorita, então, se tivesse que indicar apenas uma música presente no disco, seria ela.

Taurus, Volume 2. Por Duquesa. 

O número é 75 9! 

Duquesa é filha da princesa do sertão e foi um dos maiores nomes na cena do rap brasileiro em 2024. Depois do sucesso de “Primeiro de maio (Gostosas inteligentes)” e “Set Ajc 2”, projeto da ajuliacosta que juntou várias rappers femininas em uma faixa cheia de rimas de empoderamento, Big D se provou mesmo uma gostosa inteligente ao lançar seu segundo disco em seguida. Conheci Duquesa em 2023, com a faixa “99 problemas”, parceria com a Mc Luanna, e quero ver muito mais dela nos próximos anos. 

J. Por Jaehyun. 

Outro álbum r&b. O disco de estreia de Jaehyun veio pouco antes de seu alistamento no exército, saudades, amor!, e não poderia ser melhor. Com base nos lançamentos que Jae já tinha feito, nas bsides do nct 127 cheias de referências r&b e no gosto pessoal que ele dividiu ao longo dos anos com os fãs, já era de se esperar que J fosse exatamente do jeitinho que é. Jaehyun é romântico desde o nascimento, nascer no dia dos namorados não é pouca coisa, e a narrativa que temos no álbum é a cara dele. J é sobre amor. Em “Roses”, um amor que não foi correspondido. Em “Flamin’ Hot Lemon”, o amor como forma de devoção e esperança na correspondência. Em “Easy”, a dualidade do amar e a inconsistência da conquista fácil e da falta de interesse depois de possuir o conforto de outro alguém. 

Orquídeas. Por Kali Uchis.

Kali Uchis faz parte de mim desde o lançamento do seu segundo álbum, “Isolation”, e, apesar de preferir o “To Feel Alive EP” ou o álbum “Red Moon In Venus”, fiquei encantado com o “Orquídeas”. Ele é um álbum visual, marca registrada de Kali, que se interessa pelo mundo da moda e demonstra muito de sua personalidade por meios visuais, e conta com feats com Peso Puma e Karol G. 

Silence Is Loud, Por Nia Archives.

Nia, que é artista visual, escritora, compositora e DJ, se descreve como alguém que não quer ser uma única coisa. Com um estilo experimental muito dela e referências que não se prendem apenas a Inglaterra, seu país de origem, Nia me lembra muito Doja Cat e Grouptherapy, ao mesmo passo que não me lembra em nada esses artistas. É difícil escolher uma só faixa de SIL como favorita, mas “Blind Devotion” tem sido uma que se prendeu em mim e não parece querer me largar tão cedo. Nia é artista, é digna de trilha sonora de filme. Sua experiência como DJ faz suas músicas terem algo muito só dela, aguardo ansiosamente seu segundo álbum.

Leituras da semana (#44 / 09 Dez 2024)

Estamos a chegar ao final de mais um ano, que é como quem diz: à época das filhoses, das rabanadas, das compras de última hora em centros comerciais apinhados, e, claro, das listas dos melhores livros/discos/filmes/etc do ano. Neste caso não vou sugerir a leitura de uma lista de fim de ano, mas da metodologia e dos critérios que Jo Walton seleccionou para determinar quais são, para si, os dez melhores livros de ficção científica deste quarto de século vinte e um. É uma abordagem muito interessante, aos livros e à elaboração da lista, que está repleta de excelentes sugestões de leitura para lá do top 10 final.

A PlayStation original fez por estes dias 30 anos, e na imprensa assinalou-se a efeméride: também por cá, como se pode ler no Público, mas opto antes por destacar esta peça do The Guardian, mais longa e com mais detalhe. É interessante para mim ler isto, até porque a PlayStation foi a minha primeira consola. Já tinha jogado computador brevemente lá na aldeia (ter um computador não era comum nos anos 90!), e já tinha dado uns toques em alguns jogos na Sega Saturn de um amigo (belas tardes de Tomb Raider), mas nunca cheguei a ter uma Saturn, e o computador, esse, só chegou quando fui para a universidade. Mas tive a Playstation, prenda de passagem do oitavo para o nono ano com excelentes notas: comprei-a numa loja de informática em Odemira, que hoje já não existe, e o primeiro jogo que escolhi foi um que já conhecia de uma breve experiência num ATL de informática: Duke Nukem 3D. Só já em casa percebi que para guardar os saves precisava de um cartão de memória, mas era fim-de-semana: tive de esperar pela segunda-feira para, numa outra loja de informática em Odemira (que ainda existe, ainda que seja mais papelaria do que loja de computadores), comprar o cartão de memória. Já podia gravar o meu progresso, primeiro no Duke Nukem 3D e depois noutros jogos que fui arranjando: Resident Evil 2, Dino Crisis, Wip3out, Worms Armageddon. E noutros que o Daniel, amigo desde esses tempos até hoje, me ia emprestando: Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Tekken 3, Dead or Alive, e talvez mais um ou dois que agora me escapam. Vou sempre lamentar não ter jogado alguns títulos, como Final Fantasy VII ou Final Fantasy VIII, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, ou Fear Effect. Depois seguiu-se a Playstation 2, comprada com o dinheiro que fiz em gorgetas a trabalhar no verão na Zambujeira do Mar, mas serviu mais como leitor de DVD do que como consola. Na verdade, só cheguei a comprar dois jogos: Resident Evil: Code Veronica X e Enter the Matrix (claro); outros jogos marcantes daquela época, como Dead or Alive 2, Devil May Cry ou Resident Evil 4, já joguei por empréstimo. Entretanto a consola estava na aldeia, eu estava em Lisboa, não tinha televisão, e o meu tempo livre para videojogos foi tomado durante anos pelo World of Warcraft. Saltei a Playstation 3, e só já perto do fim de ciclo viria a comprar a Playstation 4. Hoje jogo Playstation 5, e com gosto, ao fim de anos a jogar exclusivamente em PC.

Nunca me desfiz da minha Playstation original, claro: ainda a tenho lá em casa, numa gaveta no meu quarto, com alguns dos jogos da época (um ou dois transviaram-se quando os emprestei), e tenho saudades daquela simplicidade - da consola em si, dos jogos, da vida sem grandes preocupações. A ver se a volto a ligar num destes dias.

NOS Alive 2024 - Dia 2: foi uma noite de mulheres muito diferentes. Aurora e Dua Lipa foram os destaques a ter em conta.

Com o segundo dia esgotado, Dua Lipa foi a cabeça de cartaz na noite de ontem, mas houve uma Aurora que se fez notar, intensa e misteriosa como qualquer alvorada que se digne.

Through my lens ☆

Featuring the creator of meavz magazine.

As most of you know my name is Star Warren aka @thicktrap on instagram I started Meavz Magazine in 2022 when I was 21 years old. I wanted to make an online art community. It wasn't something I planned to do. I just had a lot of artist friends and thought it would be a cool idea to bring us all together. I started DMing different artists asking them to submit their work hoping they would trust me to best represent them as an artist and their art. I did get a lot of nos but that never stopped me from believing in the magazine and its success. I watched as each Issue over the years had more and more artists submitting their work and for the first time in a long time I felt like I was a part of something. Helping artists have a platform and share their stories really inspired me. I wear so many hats for this magazine: Founder, editor, writer, photographer ect. As an artist myself I'm so dedicated to the craft I sometimes forget to take breaks. 

I took a break from the magazine in 2023 because I was a broke artist & all the money I had went into the magazine. Meavz Mazgine is a non-profit but sometimes we get donations. So using my background in photography & over the years of taking my own self portraits i started an Onlyfans at 22 years old. ( @thicktrapp ) I had already created this alter ego/character on my main instagram playing into this sex symbol. Growing up I was a fan of playboy so I wanted my Onlyfans content to be art and tasteful. After 1 year on the platform I became the top 12% of all creators in canada. In 2024 I worked so hard doing photoshoots back to back & networking with other creators. Being a NSFW creator helped me be confident in my sexuality again after coming out of an abusive relationship 3 years ago along with Ptsd, SA, mental health issues. 

They say to be in this line of work you have to have tough skin but to be an artist to be a woman to be vulnerable & express yourself in your art has so much power i wish i knew that sooner. As I sit here in my bed joint in hand writing this in 2025 I want everyone to know this is the year to do what feeds your soul. People don't need to know your plans just do it. There's a lot of people asking questions just to keep updates because you're entertainment or they are trying to steal your creative energy and we don't have time for that this year. Protect your peace, protect your creativity. Happy New Year! We are in the year of the snake! What a time to be alive and what a time to make art.
