Where would you keep it? Where would you keep its food? And How would you get rid of all the poo he poops? 👇 Then, if not a rhinoceros, how about a whale? a tiger? Or even a blue-footed booby? Mom finally makes a suggestion for a more suitable pet. What could it

Barrick CEO's Initiative Restores White Rhinos to Garamba National Park in DR Congo
Tumblr media
GARAMBA NATIONAL PARK, Democratic Republic of Congo, June 10, 2023.
After 13 years of dedicated efforts, an initiative led by Barrick's president and chief executive, Mark Bristow, has achieved a significant milestone with the successful reintroduction of 16 white rhinos to Garamba National Park.
Conservation Success: Reintroduction of White Rhinos to Garamba National Park
These majestic creatures, last seen in the park in 2006, have been carefully brought back to their natural habitat, marking a remarkable conservation success story. The rhinos were transported by aircraft from South Africa and have now been released into the park's protected areas, where a team of professionals, including qualified veterinarians, will closely monitor their acclimatization process. Barrick Gold Corporation, a leading mining company, played a crucial role as the primary donor in the translocation project. This endeavor is part of Barrick's long-standing partnership with African Parks and Garamba National Park, which holds the distinction of being Africa's oldest wildlife park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the years, Barrick has contributed more than $2.5 million to support various conservation efforts, including tracking collars, fuel for observation planes, rescue programs, rehabilitation initiatives, and essential infrastructure improvements such as roads and bridges.
Barrick Gold Corporation's Role in the Translocation Project
Collaboratively, the Congolese government, the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN), and African Parks facilitated the successful translocation of white rhinos from the & Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. Garamba National Park holds historical significance as one of the last strongholds for the now-extinct in the wild northern white rhino.
Expanding Rhino Range and Promoting Long-Term Conservation
The reintroduction of the near-threatened southern sub-species not only expands the range of rhinos in Africa, promoting their long-term conservation, but also establishes a new breeding population within a secure environment. Since African Parks assumed management of Garamba in 2005, there has been a remarkable decline in poaching activities, leading to positive population increases among various wildlife species within the park. This success can be attributed to the implementation of alternative socio-economic initiatives in and around the park. Furthermore, rhinos have played a vital role in maintaining the ecosystem's balance by creating grazing lawns that support other fauna and flora, providing essential ecosystem services.
Achievements and Positive Impacts: Decline in Poaching and Ecosystem Recovery
Mark Bristow, Barrick's CEO, emphasizes the company's commitment to sustainability and biodiversity conservation. He recognizes the significance of preserving biodiversity as a fundamental aspect of planetary survival, crucial for addressing climate change, and vital in the fight against poverty. Barrick's approach extends beyond protecting biodiversity within their mining permits, as they actively collaborate with NGOs and organizations like African Parks and Garamba to safeguard and restore critical biodiversity in precious locations worldwide. Barrick's successful group-wide biodiversity strategy places great importance on safeguarding areas of high conservation value. Understanding the symbiotic relationship between the natural environment and the local communities that depend on it is paramount.
Commitment to Sustainability: Barrick's Approach and Collaborative Efforts
Garamba National Park serves as a significant employer in the region, providing livelihoods to over 500 full-time staff and numerous contract employees, including law enforcement teams and dedicated community personnel. The park also supports more than 9,000 community members through entrepreneurial endeavors such as beekeeping, fish and poultry farming, and operates four hospitals with a capacity to treat 12,000 patients. The successful reintroduction of white rhinos to Garamba National Park is a testament to the power of collaborative conservation efforts and showcases the positive impact that sustainable practices can have on both wildlife and local communities.   Source: THX News & Barrick Gold Corporation. Reposted @olpejeta Today marks the fifth anniversary of the death of Sudan, the last male northern white rhino on the planet. His passing in March 2018, here on Ol Pejeta, sent shockwaves around the world. He was a symbol of what we are at risk of losing, of what extinction means for our planet and what we so desperately need to protect. This touching tribute below was written by his caregiver James Mwenda. "Goodbye Sudan, I don't need to say it here that I loved you. You know it well from all the talks and the moments we had together, being with you for the last few years completely changed me. I promised to be your voice (I ain't sure whether I duly and diligently fulfilled that) but I did my best. When I look back, in my years of caretaking you, my sadness and the essence of losing you is overcome by a contentment that I gave you all the best. What I regret most, is whether my fellow humanity has learned from your existence. Though still my voice has been small, I have testimonies that you have left an imprint in the hearts of many. I never expected to hear a thank you from you, no rewards, no clapping for congratulations, no job well done words, and no praise for it. All I can ask you is your blessing buddy, that blessing means everything to me, old as you were I celebrate your life well lived. On the other side of life greet the rest of the rhinos, tell them that some humans still uphold the madness that rhino horn is a cure, but there are others that still are fighting for your future. I will try my best to honour all that we talked about and live for what you have taught me. R.I.P Sudan." - @jemu_mwenda Donate today, become a regular giver, or adopt in his memory, and help save the northern white rhino from extinction. @biorescue_project @leibnizizw @safariparkdvurkralove @kenyawildlifeservice Image credit: @david_hambridge and @andrewhbrown #Sudan #HonouringSudan #NorthernWhiteRhino #OlPejeta #OlPejetaConservancy #TheLastTwo https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp-VmdDrcvV/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

RIDING FOR THE NORTHERN WHITE RHINOS
Every day, I am on my rhino bike, tirelessly pedaling to spread awareness for rhino conservation. It's a commitment that fuels my days and drives my purpose. But beyond the daily rides, I'm also gearing up for an upcoming journey that holds immense significance – a ride for the Northern White Rhinos, from Nairobi to Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
As I prepare for this monumental ride, I am filled with a sense of determination and anticipation. The road ahead may be long, but with each pedal stroke, I am propelled by the mission to make a difference. This journey is not just about covering miles; it's about amplifying the urgency of rhino conservation, especially for the critically endangered Northern White Rhinos.
With every turn of the wheel, I am reminded of the responsibility we bear to protect these majestic creatures from the threat of extinction. Riding from Nairobi to Ol Pejeta Conservancy symbolizes our collective commitment to safeguarding the future of rhinos.
I invite all fellow rhino enthusiasts to join me in this endeavor. Together, let's ride for the Northern White Rhinos, raising awareness and support for their conservation. It's not just a journey; it's a statement of solidarity and a call to action to ensure that these iconic animals continue to roam our planet for generations to come. #ridingforrhinos #northernwhiterhinos #fatuandnajin

Hi. I want to share some amazing news about something that is very important to me. I recently learned that the northern white rhino can be saved. I am so happy and very grateful to the people who have fought and are fighting for their survival and the survival of animals in general. There are only two such rhinos left, and they are both female. But scientists have found a way out, and it can save these amazing animals. I really hope that everything will be fine. I also hope that people will pay attention to this and draw the necessary conclusions.

#Repost Jody MacDonald Photography with @get_repost ・・・ Photo by Ami Vitale // Happy World Wildlife Day! Want to do something good for wildlife today? My friend Ami Vitale is offering this incredible opportunity through Omaze. Here are the details: Repost from Ami Vitale // Donate $10 and you will automatically be entered to win a visit to this sublime place called Ol Pejeta Conservancy (Ol Pejeta Conservancy) where the last two northern white rhinos in the world live. (Link in profile.) Here, Wildlife Keeper Zacharia Mutai comforts an orphaned southern white rhino at Ol Pejeta (Ol Pejeta Conservancy) in Kenya. At the end of the 19th century, southern white rhino were on the brink of extinction with only one small population of 20-50 animals remaining in South Africa. Today, thanks to one of the most successful collective conservation efforts of the century, there are now thriving populations in east and southern Africa and there are now 20,000 of these amazing creatures. Despite this rebound, poaching remains a massive threat to all rhinos and each individual is carefully cared for and guarded. In a world of 7 billion, we need to start recognizing that we are not separate from nature. When we see ourselves as part of nature, then saving nature is really about saving ourselves. Help support Ol Pejeta Conservancy today and maybe even win a trip there yourself with me at omaze.com/rhinos. #OlPejetaRhinos #NorthernWhiteRhinos #protectrhinos #DontLetThemDisappear #rhinos #saverhinos #stoppoaching #kenya #africa #happyfriday https://www.instagram.com/p/B85io7go9n2/?igshid=2g5p1h579vlo

Photo by @amivitale. Fatu, one of the last two northern white rhinos known to be alive, rolls in the mud on a delightfully wet day at @Olpejeta Conservancy in northern Kenya. Fatu is crazy about mud baths and is known to get frisky when the rains come and head right for the mud holes to wallow. We are less than two weeks away from an exciting, online, global viewing party for the award-winning short film, Remembering Sudan, which documents the incredible bond between Zacharia Mutai and the last northern white rhinos. After a screening of the film, there will be a live discussion with Zacharia and filmmaker Ami Vitale who has spent the last 14 years working with the rhinos and Ol Pejeta conservancy, where the rhinos currently live. This will be an empowering talk for adults and children and leave you affected with ideas and inspiration for creating positive change in your own communities! The virtual event will be live-streamed at 11am MT/ 1pm ET / 6pm GMT. Make a donation to attend and it will benefit Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which cares for the last two northern white rhinos. To start off #WorldRhinoDay I am compelled to pay my respects to Nola, the last North White Rhino to live at the @sdzSafariPark. When I first met her, there were only 6 of her species left on the planet. Several years later when she passed away only 3 of her kind remained on the planet. Today there are only 2 Northern White Rhinos left. It’s easy to feel helpless as extinction seems inevitable. However, San Diego Zoo Global is working keep the species going through science and technology. I encourage you to check out www.endextinction.org to find out more. (Yes, I know links don’t work in Instagram, but it’s easy to remember and you can Google search it as well.) . . . . . #NorthernWhiteRhinos #WhiteRhino #SanDiegoZoo #SafariPark #EndExtinction #africanwildlife #wildlifeeducation #makeadifference #savingspecies #savetherhino #animalsofinsta (at San Diego, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BoCag8FlRF5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1g834zpd7k1fp

#Repost @natgeo (@get_repost) ・・・ Photo by @amivitale With a heavy heart, I share this news and hope that Sudan's legacy will awaken us to protect this magnificent and fragile planet. Yesterday, Joseph Wachira, 26 comforted Sudan, the last living male Northern White Rhino left on this planet moments before he passed away. Sudan lived a long, healthy life at the conservancy after he was brought to Kenya from @safari_park_dvur_kralov in the #czechrepublic in 2009. He died surrounded by people who loved him at @olpejeta after suffering from age-related complications that led to degenerative changes in muscles and bones combined with extensive skin wounds. Sudan has been an inspirational figure for many across the world. Thousands have trooped to Ol Pejeta to see him and he has helped raise awareness for rhino conservation. The two female northern white rhinos left on the planet are his direct descendants. Research into new Assisted Reproductive Techniques for large mammals is underway due to him. The impact that this special animal has had on conservation is simply incredible. And there is still hope in the future that the subspecies might be restored through IVF. In 2009, I had the privilege of following this gentle hulking creature on his journey from the snowy Dour Krylov zoo in the Czech Republic to the warm plains of Kenya, when he was transported with three of his fellow Northern White Rhinos in a last ditch effort to save the subspecies. It was believed that the air, water, and food, not to mention room to roam, might stimulate them to breed—and the offspring would then be used to repopulate Africa. At the time, there were 8 Northern white rhinos alive, all in zoos. Today, we are witnessing the extinction of a species that had survived for millions of years but could not survive mankind. Follow @olpejeta and @amivitale to learn more about how we can protect these magnificent creatures. @natgeo @natgeocreative @olpejeta @kenyawildlifeservice @thephotosociety  #SudanForever#WorthMoreAlive #OlPejetaRhinos #NorthernWhiteRhinos #protectrhinos #DontLetThemDisappear #rhinos #saverhinos #stoppoaching #kenya #northernkenya #africa #everydayafrica #photojournalism #

@savingthesurvivors team are so excited to share with you that their search for the Northern White Rhino, which is thought to be functionally extinct, will be aired on BBC2 this Friday! If you can't catch it this Friday, as it will also be available on @bbciplayer With the death of the last captive male, Sudan, the northern white rhinoceros was officially declared extinct in 2018. But in recent years, possible sightings from a remote region in the heart of Africa have given conservationists hope. Could this charismatic animal get a miraculous second chance? This film follows a dedicated international team of experts on an expedition to war-torn South Sudan in search of the northern white rhinoceros. An animal native to this unexplored and dangerous region in Africa, the team is taking a huge risk to realise the dream that a lost population of these incredible beasts still exist. The team comprise of Paul Naden, expedition leader & CEO of rhino rescue charity Saving the Survivors (STS), Vianet Djenguet, a highly skilled Congolese wildlife camera operator, Dr. Johan Marais the world-leading rhinoceros veterinarian & founder of Saving The Survivors, and Aldo Kane, a high security expert & former royal marine. South Sudan has suffered the longest civil war in Africa’s history. There is no developed road system, no power grid or phone networks, and no internet. There have been very limited wildlife surveys done in the last decades, and no film crew has been allowed to film in the country for years. But the crew will to do whatever it takes to find hope for the existence of this sub-species. The dedicated team experience the highs and lows of expedition life in this vast country. A wonderful and wild place, they meet with indigenous Dinka tribes, deploy search technology and throw everything they can at the search against all its odds - until the expedition is turned upside down due to events that shock the world. We’d also like to thank our long standing supporters & kit suppliers @craghoppers for their ongoing collaboration in this project. #expeditionrhino #savingthesurvivors #creatinghopefronhurt #savetherhino #northernwhiterhino #sudan #southsudan #bbc (at South Sudan, Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CczJSLcIK-g/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
