Translating NORN9: Hiyokos
Welcome back to “Translating NORN9”, where I translate NORN9 content!
Today I’m going to translate the Hiyoko Page. As a bit of trivia, all of the Hiyokos share thier VAs with the main characters
The Hiyokos living in Norn
These hiyokos take care of the personal belongings of those who board the Norn. However, no one knows their identities.
Pu Hiyoko
Voiced by: Takuya Sato (Masamune’s VA)
Pu Hiyoko has no particular role and always sits outside relaxing. He is dazed as if he doesn't care if he is thrown.
Maid Hiyoko
Voiced by: Ayumi Fujimura (Koharu's VA)
A solid Hiyoko who is good at cleaning rooms. When the bath is ready, she may come directly to notify the passenger.
Captain Hiyoko
Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita (Ron's VA)
A Hiyoko piloting a Norn. With a scar on his forehead, wearing goggles and holding a cigar, he has a wild vibe.
Hiyocook
Voiced by: Ayahi Takagaki (Mikoto's VA)
This Hiyoko is in charge of managing ingredients and supporting passengers when they cook. They get angry when the passengers play instead of cook.
Librarian Hiyoko
Voiced by: Koji Yusa (Itsuki's VA)
A Hiyoko who manages Norn's library. Due to his timid personality, he doesn't pay attention to people who are making noise in the hall.
Reporter Hiyoko
Voiced by: Mitsuki Saiga (Sakuya's VA)
A Hiyoko who works as a reporter for the "HYC Channel". He is too enthusiastic and sometimes annoys others...
Cameraman Hiyoko
Voiced by: Daisuke Ono (Natsuhiko's VA)
He works as a dedicated cameraman for the "HYC Channel" and always supports the Reporter Hiyoko from behind.
Doctor Hiyoko
Voiced by: Asami Seto (Nanami's VA)
A Hiyoko that examines a passenger when he or she is sick. As an experienced doctor, they immediately respond to any disease.
Programmer Hiyoko
Voiced by: Hiroyuki Yoshino (Heishi's VA)
A Hiyoko who manages programs related to Norn. When it speaks, it chirps in a low, machine-like voice.
Introverted Hiyoko
Voiced by: Hiro Shimono (Senri’s VA)
A Hiyoko with a birthmark under his eye that appears in a dream. His feeble squeak and troubled expression are very similar to Senri's.
Hiyoko?
Voiced by: Noriaki Sugiyama (Akito's VA)
A Hiyoko that can catch fish. Its appearance is so confusing that Akito worries about it, but it is a chick, and if he is mistaken, he will be hurt and go insane.
White Hiyoko
Voiced by: Yuki Kaji (Kakeru's VA)
A white Hiyoko made by Natsuhiko and powered by AI. Using the green board it has, it acts as Mikoto's caretaker while having a conversation.

These questions are related to both of your posts on NORN9
1. You stated in your first post that if you were to rewrite NORN9 you wish to “have the MC and love interests form a more believable romance.” Which pairings in the game made you think that the most?
2. Your questioning of the age gap romance. The age gaps between some of the adult love interests somewhat bother me (especially Ron due to him being the oldest and paired up with the youngest of the females) and I somewhat wish that in the routes with adults as partners were kept platonic.
3. This isn’t related to your posts but do you have a favorite and least favorite pair? As well as a favorite and least favorite character?
4. Side note: there’s actually a third game called NORN9 Act Tune which didn’t get localized and was released in late 2016.
My rewrite has Mikoto x Sakuya and Natsuhiko x Ron as couples. I also heavily changed Natsuhiko and Ron's characters and relationship since I didn't really care for them in the first game. I chose Mikoto and Sakuya because childhood friends to lovers makes my brain go brr.
The one's that bother me the most age-wise are Ron x Nanami Koharu x Masamune because it's illegal for 20 year olds to date teenagers. I'm also not a fan of Nanami x Heishi because even though Heishi is 19, Nanami is 16 and that feels wrong to me.
My favorite pair is maybe Koharu x Senri, but that comes with the caveat of Koharu constantly bothering Senri, even if she had good intentions. My least favorite pair is Nanami x Ron not only because of their age gap, but he also took advantage of her trauma. My favorite characters are all the heroines and my least favorite is Ron.
Considering Act Tune doesn't have a Nintendo Switch release at the time of typing this, I think there's a reason why it wasn't released in the US yet.

Happy National Peach Month everyone, we're playing the peaches game! Aka Norn9! Which isn't actually a game about peaches technically, it's now about raising a STRAWBERRY plant! No, the betrayal! But Mr. Strawberry has just sprouted flowers, so that's cool.

MLQC Season 2 Worldview Timeline Analysis
A/N: I'm not used to doing heavy analysis or theory but...when I saw the worldview in Love and Deep Space (Another series of Love (恋与)), i’m suddenly thinking to make this analysis like...ARGH!
If you don’t want to get a pinch of spoiler from MLQC, LoveDP, nor Norn9, please skip this post.
First of all, the Questions:
“Why Loveland City become more modern in Season 2?”
.
When I seeing the whole city buildings, why? just why? don't MC go back to 17 years ago? the buildings should be same as Season 1 (2017), why its different now?
And then, when I saw one of my moots in twitter talking about Love and Deep Space, I suddenly remember their city.
Love and Deep Space’s story is happening in 2034, the city is more modern, and the city buildings are similar with...MLQC Season 2???
“What?”
After I discussed with a several moots in my post on twitter, I don’t know why but...MLQC worldview nor plot(?)..., remind me to japanese otome game named “Norn9 ~Norn + Nonette~”
.
What is “Norn9 ~Norn + Nonette~”?
Norn9 ~Norn + Nonette~ is one of popular japanese otome game by Otomate that released in around 2013, and got anime adaptation in 2016.
A/N: Natsuhiko-san! Why are you so handsome?! ๐·°(৹˃̵﹏˂̵৹)°·๐
Game Summary:
Within an old-fashioned town, much like the Meiji and Taisho Era, there exists a giant globe that floats in midair. This is the ‘ship’ called ‘Norn’. The inside is set like a small town with parks, etc.
The story takes place a little in the future. Guided by one particular song, young elementary kid, Suzuhara Sorata is warped through a time skip to an unfamiliar place much like the Meiji and Taisho eras from his textbooks. In this world, he meets 3 young ladies and 9 young men, and joins them on a journey aboard the mysterious ‘Norn’ ship in the sky.
The Question:
“Why there’s futuristic floating ship in the Meiji Era town’s sky?”
.
That game’s worldview and time is set in around 1919, but in reality, the ‘real’ timeline is set in year 8075.
“What’s happened???”
In Norn9, there’s “Reset”.
“Reset” is a system that can initialize the civilization, it’s like if the mankind turned the civilization they build back to zero, and started the history over, the earth would back to its beautiful state.
Norn9 world already did "Reset" three times, that's why people still think that they're in timeline year 1919, but in 'technological development'/real timeline, it's year 8075.
.....
Back to MLQC
In Chapter 37 to Season 2 Prequel, MC took the crown and back to 17 years ago, where she, 5 y.o MC, can meet the bois in laboratory first, and change the fate.
17 years later, the timeline is 2017, MC become a successful producer in Loveland City and become Black Swan Nox.
so, from Norn9 worldview...
When MC back to her 5 y.o, the human civilization timeline is 2000, but in reality, it's still in 2017-2018, which means...
The Answer:
"The 'real' timeline in MLQC Season 2 is 2034, same as Love and Deep Space story timeline."
.
"Human civilization" is went back, but not with "Technological development"
.

I’m so late with this post (and the next 2 haha ^_^;) but! This otome, Olympia Soiree, is coming West this year (tho I haven’t seen if it’ll be on console or pc)!! No release date so far but I’m so excited for this news~
Description from VNDB: When the ‘White’ girl dances the night fades away. Naming herself “Olympia” Like a doll she never smiles, Like a doll she always dances, The people both respect and fear her. On Tenguu Island, where “color” is more important than life, she has a color that nobody else has. Now that she has turned 18, in order for the rare “White” to not die out, she must go and look for a mating partner. “You who were born on Tennyo Island are special.” “You can choose freely between men of any color on this island.” The girl who had refused contact with the outside world because of a past incident believed in her dead mother’s words and took a step forward. In order to find a person who can love her true self. In order to meet the other half of her soul she wishes for.
And now, for the most important part (according to me), the cast!!

“How they choose to exercise their power could be the greatest disaster a world might know OR its greatest salvation.”
Norn9 is very good, even though I didn’t think it would be. Hear me out, guys.
I found the 12 (technically 13) episode “Norn9: Norn + Nonette” anime ages ago while discovering both the nature of reverse harem and that I was a big fan of the subgenre, but I didn’t watch it for reasons which, in retrospect, seem a little short-sighted. Norn9 is an otome-based, sci-fi inspired anime that—while technically reverse harem—features 3 lead female protagonists each with their own personality and love stories. I passed it up because, in addition to the uniforms leading me to believe the main characters were in high school (I’ve had enough of that!!) and online plot synopses implying the MC was an elementary-aged schoolboy, I thought it would be too sci-fi and wouldn’t be reverse harem enough.
Yeah, I know the last bits are silly. You can laugh if you want.
Anyway, I passed on the anime and by extension the game (“Norn9: Var Commons”), though as I ran out of media to consume, Norn9 continued to feature heavily in my search results. I ignored it, looking into it briefly perhaps twice more and each time coming to this same conclusion. I honestly can’t tell you what made me finally decide to watch it aside from the rapidly evaporating pool of available titles in the otome-based reverse harem subgenre and my new HiDive subscription (#worthit).
But oh, anime compatriots, I’m so glad I did.
youtube
To clarify, “Norn9: Var Commons” (the game) is a separate beast from “Norn9: Norn + Nonette” (the anime), and so for the purposes of this commentary, our references to Norn9 will be indicative of the anime only.
The plot synopses available online (think MAL, for example) are terribly misleading in their anime description (though their description may be more true of the game?). Because of this, I’d like to provide my own:
A naive, innocent, amnesiac, orphaned, ostercaised girl (That’s a lot of adjectives.) with incredible destructive power takes the advice of a traveling stranger. He advises her that, when the time is right, she is to dawn a strange uniform and ready herself for a spaceship that will present itself in the spring of her 17th year. In doing so, she will no longer be cursed to a life of solitude because her mysterious power will be of monumental use.
The time arrives, and the girl is thrust into new experiences, meeting fellows who share her proficiency with strange powers and who are used by a mysterious organization or entity called “The World” for reasons heretofore not fully known. These young adults (aged 17-25), while attempting to navigate their own lives and needs, have a greater responsibility to the world itself. How they choose to exercise their power could be the greatest disaster a world might know OR its greatest salvation.
(And yes, there is a schoolboy character is in the anime for plot reasons, but while he’s probably more important in the game, he’s not the MC of the anime, MAL. In fact, the aforementioned nameless girl isn’t even the only MC. Sheesh.)
Before we get into the more standard commentary, I want to comment on its genre specificity, what that means for the title’s plot/characters, and the implications these things have on the game.
I was correct in my assumption that Norn9 wouldn’t be the most “reverse harem of reverse harems,” but it was due in large part to this that I found it a refreshing addition to the subgenre. I mean, it wasn’t so trope that I felt the need to assign characters a bishounen level, and that says a lot. I’m not normally a fan of science fiction, but the sci-fi elements only served to enhance the title when used properly in conjunction with the fantasy, action, period, and romance elements. Yes, that’s right–period elements! You’re reading about a sci-fi anime that takes place in the past WITHOUT BEING STEAMPUNK. How often do you see a sci-fi set in the past that isn’t steampunk? Norn9 is just that, and it occasionally throws in that appropriate time-period feel without sacrificing its overall exceptionally modern feel. It’s also a josei, a genre not usually combined with this number of fantasy elements, and I adore seeing adult’s relationships portrayed on screen (shoujo is known for its romances’ fantastical natures). I mean—and I say this very generally—not every relationship in life works out the way we’d planned, and josei (unlike its little sister, shoujo) knows that very well.
I recorded a post that will be up tomorrow in which I talk about a different otome-based anime and touch upon many of the “pitfalls of the genre,” but it’s a simple fact that many anime based on other media (manga, otome, RPG, etc.) is done partly for advertisement purposes. For an anime to be a successful advertisement for a game, it has to walk a fine line between engaging its viewers and presenting its content while still holding its most powerful messages firmly in reserve. After all, if an otome-based anime fully explored every theme and world/character background present in the game, far fewer people would play it.
Having said that, you should know that the best otome games have profound contemplations (see here for a great example), so their anime when done well hints at these contemplations in ways that straddle that advertisement line properly. Norn9 does this well, and “Code Realize ~ Guardian of Rebirth” does it very poorly (but that’s a discussion for another day).
“Collar x Malice” (game) asks, “What does justice mean to you?” “Code Realize ~ Guardian of Rebirth” (game) asks too many questions regarding God, religion, science, humanity, and morality to fully mention. Themes hinted at by Norn9 include:
To be lonely, you must not have always been alone. Discussions on the nature of solitude and lonliness.
The power of romantic love does not negate every other attachment in someone’s heart. While to love and lose is difficult, it does not dictate the sacrifice of every other love for its preservation. Romantic love WANTS other loving attachments to flourish even after it’s gone. (I am so excited to see this played out in the game as it was so explicit in the anime.)
Explorations of man’s reasonings for playing God and the ends they meet, as well as the nature of and relationships between humanity, machinery, and intelligence.
Moving on to more general musings, Norn9 has lovely art and character design. It doesn’t suffer “derpy background character face” syndrome to my notice, and the character uniforms for the men are exceptional even if the ones for women remind me far too much of school uniforms. I think the various color palettes supported the tones of the anime rather than detracting from them and were all appropriately integrated while managing to maintain the anime’s overall visually bright feel.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Following up, the episodic pacing seems well and good; never did I feel the need to skip episodes, and while I didn’t feel the need to take breaks (as proved by the fact I watched the whole thing in two days), your own viewership might be significantly different, so I encourage you to let me know how you felt about it. In addition, the anime’s initial emphasis on the girl I mentioned in the plot synopsis (her name is Kohaur, btw) gave the show a great starting off point and enough subtle focus to form a cohesive narrative while still letting other characters shine. It was fantastically contrived and fitted within the game’s framing, clearly not something they could do within traditional RH parameters.
If you’ve seen Norn9, what did you think? If you haven’t, do you plan to? Do you have any RH josei to recommend me? What’s more, have you played the game?? No spoilers please, but let me know in the comments below! ❤
Love, Peace, Geese,
~Shoujo

Does anyone else find it odd how Norn9 refers to the characters who are in their 20s as adults, and anyone who is 19 and below is considered a minor…all while having the two groups be in relationships. Putting Ron + Nanami and Koharu + Masamune aside, if the game considers the 18 year old Mikoto to be around a minor’s age, then why is she in a relationship with the 22 year old Natsuhiko and the 23 year old Itsuki? Not saying that’s illegal, I’m just trying to understand the game’s logic.

After a long time Dusknoir is almost complete!! 😭 I have to accelerate ‘cause I still have two drawings to do before the end of the month, one of this has the same size although simpler. What do you think? Do they seem strange? Dusknoir has often left me perplexed. I hope I guessed the colors … I used the usual 4 grays for everything! 🙈
Aaaaaand… LOVE THE GALARIAN PONYTA. BEST POKEMON EVER. Have you already chosen between sword and shield? I wanted SHIELD but since my sister and I always decide different, now she is opting for it … DAMN. Hope for as many fabulous versions of galar as these, for now I like all new pokemon! 😍😍
👉🏻ANIME FACTOR!👈🏻 I finished “Roku de nashi majutsu kōshi to Akashikku rekōdo“ and a chinese anime, “Quan Zhi Gao Shou”.
The first is very nice: the first season is actually a presentation of the characters.. I hope very much in a second at this point! In the end anime accelerates in a dizzying way, what a pity. Anyway I recommend it, cute and fun!
“Quan Zhi Gao Shou” is a very beustiful anime. I had problems with chinese (for me names and words all look the same 🤣) but the story is beautiful. I believe that more episodes would have been better to understand the dynamics of the game and the background of the characters. You can understand what happens and the development of events, the characters are well developed but more episodes would have made it even better. NOW I WANT TO SEE THE MOVIE. The series leaves you with a disarming curiosity. AAAAAAAAAAAAAH it’s so draining 😩 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, EVERYONE NEED TO SEE THIS.
Now I’m watching “Norn9 Norn + Nonette”, a reverse-harem, what a strange anime!

A fandisc of Norn9 ~Norn + Nonette~ which contains three different story parts: 1) Concerto –Kyousoukyoku– Sun Concerto Even though it’s not a special day, the morning that welcomes you and your boyfriend is filled with the greatest happiness. Nothing could possibly change this specialness. This is a story written about you and your beloved boyfriend’s day-to-day life. Moonlight Concerto A problem that arises between you and your sweetheart after becoming a couple… This has something to do with his past. This is a story about fastening the traces of the past, present and future together. 2) Fuga –Tonsoukyoku– The meaning of that kiss and embrace on that day… The feelings he had hidden in the innermost depths of his heart had unveiled. This is the original story told from his perspective. 3) Fantasia –Gensoukyoku– What if the girls’ love had never blossomed? This is a “what if?” story written about a single scene from a certain trip… A certain incident that had occurred in the real world and the dream world causes chaos aboard Norn. The Norn members had all become small in the dream world. They thought Itsuki was behind this, but apparently, this wasn’t the case. “Even though we’ve become small… If it’s only in the dream world, it shouldn’t be an issue.” That’s what everybody thought… However, problems also gradually arose in the real world. Finally not being able to endure this situation, they all use Heishi and Itsuki’s abilities to gather together.
