Man, genuinely there's little that excites me more than encountering queerness in fiction where I wasn't expecting it. I'm gonna be thinking about Kikuhiko/Yakumo from SGRS for so long.

Even setting aside the subtext of his feelings for Sukeroku, the narrative around his relationship to gender norms and his own expression is so fascinating. Guy who grows up steeped in rigid 40s gender roles and actively tries to enforce them, yet only truly feels like himself when he's acting on stage as a woman. Guy who says his life would have been better if he were born a woman and then refuses to elaborate.

Thinking of anime - Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu by Haruko Kumota Part 2

The first disciple of Yakumo, Yotaro. Often in Rakugo, the foolish characters are named Yotaro

In part 1, I gave you a general introduction of the series Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (SGRS). From here on, I shan’t explain in-depth the story and the characters as my intent here are not in recommending this anime. People who watch it will watch it and those who will fall in love with this story will share what they love. And it is this love that binds the community as a whole.

 I want to start off by having some working definitions of technical words that will be used.

 Let’s start off with culture. We use this word often in our daily lives and it is strongly ingrained in our vocabulary; it is something we know the meaning of, but not many can give the definition to. This tends to happen as culture is used as an umbrella term to encompass social behavior, norms, knowledge, beliefs, objects, and so on of a group of individuals. It is something that is fluid and changes over time.

 Cultural practices are performed largely to arrange the social relations and relations of production in a certain way. This method of arrangement can be of necessity or arbitrary and can be fluid but also cemented with something more solid then culture. When cultural practices are cemented it becomes comparatively unaffected and can resist changes brought on by the fluidity of culture around; becoming traditional practices. Often those practices lose meaning that was attached to it during this transition and it becomes a free ground for meaning to be created by its practitioners, and audiences.

 Performativity is a term that many will be familiar with through Judith Butler’s use of the term gender performativity. But I’ll use it here in the context of traditional practices; cultural performativity; that it is through the repeated performance that such practices, even after losing its function of social organization can it survive; it is the continued practice that results in the tradition being kept alive, rather the tradition dictating the actions that are performed.

 Framing tradition as something that is kept alive by repeated performance rather than a monolithic set of rules, allows us to find ways to alter it as the culture around it changes; co-existing with progress. There is a view in our world today that dims tradition as harmful to progress. There is also an opposite spectrum of this view that tries to use traditional value as a device to create us vs them divide and a different way of seeing tradition may help us preserve the meaning people attach to it, while it serves to better, not jeopardize our society.

The two brother disciples, platonic but also loving relationship

 Let’s recap what is my belief that the author wants to convey to us which are: What does it mean to hold affection? And how does affection of the past influence our interaction with the world that changes?

The whole of season 1, except for the very first episode, depicts the life of Yakumo (or Bong at this point) in his earlier days. It starts with an introduction of him when he was seven years old and sent off to study Rakugo under the then seventh-generation Yakumo. On his first day as a disciple, he meets Sukeroku, who becomes his brother by discipleship. During their interaction, we learn of how Bong felt abandoned by his parents who sent him off to Yakumo as they did not want him as their son.

We then skip forward a few years to his teenage years, Bong, due to the fear of being abandoned again, desperately holds onto Rakugo, hoping that if he were to get good enough, it would become a place where he could belong. This becomes an obsession and he becomes blind to other places to belong; where he can find solace. Namely, this is shown as a girl that he meets and falls in love with, yet due to Bong’s obsession with his practice, they drift apart.

 After graduating from mandatory education, Bong receives the name of Kiku and along with Sukeroku, begins to perform properly on stage as a full-time Rakugoka. During this period, Kiku puts in great effort into his practice yet always lacks behind Sukeroku. Yet Sukuroku’s free nature prevents him from adhering to the restrictive rules of tradition and this makes him disliked by the elder members of the practice.

The last chance for a simpler life

Japan soon becomes embroiled in various wars and this led to a period of restraint; a period where people avoid wasting resources so that it can be directed towards the war, this has a direct impact on entertainment industries, and Rakugo as well. As time passes and the war continues, Kikuhoko’s teacher and Sukeroku travel to Manchuria to perform for the soldiers on the front lines while Kiku is unable to follow them due to the problem of his leg.

 During this period, he moves to the countryside and works in a factory, this slow life allowing him to contemplate if he should just stay there and not return to the busy city to practice Rakugo. Here, he had a chance to find another way of life, free from his obsession with Rakugo, and try to find meaning in something else.

 The war eventually ends, and he returns to Tokyo. As society begins to recover from the damages of war, people begin to seek out entertainments and Kiku returns to practicing Rakugo to earn a living. Eventually, his teacher and Sukeroku make it back to Japan and everyone is happy and reunited.

Miyokichi flirts with Kikuhiko, but Kiku is not sure

Here we are introduced to Miyokichi and she quickly takes a liking of Kiku, falling in love with him. This time Kiku does reciprocates, even if his priority is always with practicing Rakugo, and for a while, Miyokichi is okay with this, she is happy seeing the person she loves happy and knows what it is that they want to achieve in life.

While Kiku was devoted to his practice, Sukeroku’s disdain for tradition grows. In the words of the characters, the two are compared in their way of performance. For Kiku, he embodies the characters and brings the audiences into the world that is being told; he is fluid in his selfhood when performing and tells the story as it is, as close as possible to its intention. Sukeroku is the opposite. All the characters become Sukeroku as he tells the story. He follows the general structure, but his method of delivery is unique to himself and how he feels at that moment; he is unstable but his leads to uniqueness in his telling of the story. If people watch Kiku to listen to the stories he tells, they watch Sukeroku to enjoy Sukeroku’s performance.

 The audience loves them for their individual styles, but Sukeroku’s style makes him shine out compared to the older generations and this results in him increasingly losing favor from the senior practitioners. Yet he was kept around since the audiences liked him, but as his fame increased so did his ego. This eventually results in him being excommunicated from his teacher.

Westernisation of entertainment in Japan, post-pacific war

And yet if we were to see his actions from a different perspective, we can see this as another form of struggle to keep the practice of Rakugo alive. At this point in history (and depicted in the series), Japan had been experiencing westernization of culture. Kiku works in a café, there is a jazz bar, and Rakugo has been losing its audience as time went by.

The two characters, Sukeroku and Kiku were the youngest practitioners; at least among those, we are introduced to. Thus the two promise each other to continue the practice, to keep it alive, and attempt to revitalize it. To them, Kiku who told the stories as they were would symbolize the tradition that has continued down for centuries, While Sukeroku would symbolize the constant change that is needed for the continued existence of the culture; thus they are not lost to the tide of time; they make a promise to both work together and keep the practice they love alive.

Yet this promise is left unkept. After Sukeroku’s excommunication, and Kiku’s rejection of Miyokichi’s advances, the two run away from the city to the countryside, have a child and start a family together. However, due to her rejection by Kiku, Miyokichi prevents Sukeroku from practicing Rakugo, as he did not have any other skills, he was unable to earn a living and became a drunk. Fed up with this, she runs away, leaving him and their daughter Konatsu. This belief becomes an obsession and she becomes delusional that Kikuhiko will one day come to save her from this misery.

Sukeroku: “No, I won’t drink this Sake. I don’t want this to have been just a dream”

 While this was happening, Kiku became better accepted by the senior members of the practice and built up enough fame to the point that there were people who wanted to be his disciple. However, to Kiku, Rakugo that has now lost Sukeroku to guide it to the future is only left to wither away and die. The more he believed this, the more convinced he was that his role was to see it off to the end.

 Yet he holds out hope that if he was just able to bring Sukeroku back, things might change. And after his teacher’s passing, he journeys out in search of him. He finds him eventually, and with effort was able to bring Sukeroku out of his drinking habit and bring him back to performing Rakugo, first at the nearby inn. The performance was successful and for a moment we see the possibility for their promise being kept. Sukeroku wants to go back to the city with Kiku, and start performing Rakugo again as a profession, the reason, not the least of which, the love his daughter shows for his performance.

Did this really happen?

Yet all goes astray when Miyokichi returns that exact night for Kiku and her obsession with him results in her attempt to commit double suicide with him. Sukeroku saves Kikuhiko in the end but ends up falling off the balcony and into the river below, this taking away his and Miyokichi’s life.

 His final words being “I trust you”.

What was he trusting Kiku with?

To take care of Konatsu?

To take care of Rakugo?

Or to take care of himself?

Our unreliable narrator begins to tell his story

Of course, we are later told that Kiku, or after this point Yakumo is an unreliable narrator, ironic, being that the person who is described in the series as the best storyteller being unreliable to us.

 There is one more concept we need to understand and use in understanding how to make tradition evolve and live on, and that is Repetition and difference from Gilles Deleuze; when used together with Butler’s performativity, it can help us greatly in this journey of understanding.

 That will be our focus in the next chapter.

 But to end this chapter, let us end it off with this consideration. With Sukeroku’s death, Yakumo completely lost his faith in Rakugo having a future. This leads to him both refusing to take any disciple, and also prevent Konatsu from trying to practice it. This obsession also leads to him being convinced that it was his destiny to witness the death of this practice, thus the title, to commit double suicide with Rakugo during the age of Showa Genroku.

if you hate miyokichi, you don’t understand this show.

(to be upfront about certain things: i don’t think ‘she didn’t do anything wrong’. nor do i think she and sukeroku, or she and kiku, were ever actually in love so. lets start with that.)

in the context of the show, there are three overlapping factors affecting the lives of our main trio here: homophobia, gender, and class. if kiku is affected by homophobic and sexist gender norms (’a boy can’t be a geisha!’) and sukeroku is affected by homophobic and classist norms, miyokichi is affected by sexist and classist norms, and the specificities of her situation end up making her far more vulnerable in her life than either sukeroku or kiku is.

she has been forced into sex work for the entirety of her life. first she attempts to have kiku marry her, because he is of an elevated class and will literally bring her out of poverty and free her from needing sex work and bring stability to her life. it’s not a love match, it’s literally survival for miyokichi. if kiku understands any of this–and i think he does–he ultimately chooses not to care. left with little other options, miyokichi turns to sukeroku. both of them clearly are thinking of kiku when they’re with each other, but they both know that–miyo obviously recognizes the homoerotic nature of sukeroku and kiku’s relationship (how many times has she tried to force her way between them/claimed sukeroku ‘steals’ kiku from her? it’s not even subtle, folks). but again, it’s something. if she can get sukeroku out of the city, she thinks, away from rakugo, he will get a job and support her and maybe she can escape sex work and poverty with him.

is it likely? no. does miyo manipulate sukeroku with her pregnancy? absolutely. is miyokich the only one at fault here? absolutely not. sgrs is a dramatic tragedy…all of the characters have faults and make serious, painful mistakes. that’s the show.

anyway, sukeroku turns out to be a complete fucking bum and does nothing but drink all day, and miyokichi is forced back into sex work again. she abandons him and her daughter and while in many ways that is a reprehensible choice, is it also an understandable one? yes, in my opinion.

rather than hate miyokichi, it is far more interesting to try and understand her, to recognize that her situation was stacked against her in every single way and that she did what she thought she had to do to survive. no, she is not perfect. but kiku has spent the entire time he has raised konatsu denying her the one thing she wants because she is a girl, deliberately making her miserable, making her suffer, because he wants someone to suffer the way that he suffered, to be unhappy as he is unhappy. yet kiku is the fandom’s beloved fave despite this.

why can’t miyokichi ever get the same understanding?

(NEWEST EP SPOILERS///) yes, she killed sukeroku. that is the tragedy that this entire show is built upon. maybe not everyone is willing to try and understand miyokichi in this moment. but that tragedy stems from her own tragedy, the one that she has struggled with her entire life, the one where no one wanted to empathize with her or reach out to her and understand her and maybe help her instead of manipulating and using her.

Observation inédite du disque d'accrétion de gaz froid autour de Sgr A*

Des nouvelles observations du réseau de radiotélescopes ALMA viennent de fournir pour la première fois une image du disque de gaz froid qui est accrété autour de Sgr A*. Ces observations offrent de nouvelles indications sur ce phénomène associé aux trous noirs.

Depuis plusieurs décennies, les astronomes commencent à avoir une image de plus en plus claire du voisinage chaotique et très peuplé du trou noir supermassif Sgr A* qui se trouve à 26660 années-lumière. On sait par exemple que cette région comporte un grand nombre d'étoiles, des nuages de poussière et un gros réservoir de gaz chaud et de gaz froid. Ces gaz doivent être en orbite autour du trou noir en formant un vaste disque d'accrétion qui s'étend à quelques dixièmes d'années-lumière de l'horizon des événements (quelques dizaines de jours-lumière).

Jusqu'à maintenant, les astrophysiciens avaient seulement réussi à imager la portion "chaude" du gaz, qui forme une zone environ sphérique sans montrer de rotation clairement définie. C'est l'émission en rayons X de ce gaz échauffé à 10 millions de kelvins qui avait permis ces observations. Mais aujourd'hui, c'est l'émission millimétrique du gaz froid qui est observée par ALMA. Ce gaz froid est tout de même à une température de 10 000 kelvins, et c'est la recombinaison incessante des électrons avec les protons dans les atomes d'hydrogène qui produit cette émission caractéristique observable à la longueur d'onde de 1,3 mm, celle-là même qu'a utilisé l'EHT lors de ses observations historiques des ombres de M87* et SgrA*, dont ALMA faisait (et fait toujours) partie.

Grâce à sa sensibilité et à sa résolution angulaire hors normes, le réseau radioastronomique installé sur le haut plateau de l'Atacama a pu détecter ce faible signal pour produire la première image de ce gaz froid jusqu'à une distance d'un centième d'année-lumière, environ 1000 unités astronomiques (distance Terre-Soleil) seulement de l'horizon, ce qui est égal à 10 000 fois le rayon de l'horizon... 

Mais ce qui encore plus impressionnant, c'est que Elena Murchikova (Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton) et ses collaborateurs dont l'étude est publiée aujourd'hui dans Nature, ont réussi à observer le mouvement de rotation du gaz froid accrété autour de Sgr A*. Ils ont pour cela mesuré les décalages spectraux de l'émission radio. Alors que l'émission radio dans sa globalité est centrée sur la position de Sgr A*, mais la portion décalée vers les grandes longueurs d'ondes (vers le "rouge"), le gaz qui s'éloigne de nous, est décalée de 0,11 secondes d'arc, ce qui correspond à un écart de 0,013 années-lumière vers le nord-est, et la portion décalée vers le bleu se trouve exactement à la même distance mais à l'opposé, vers le sud-ouest.

Les chercheurs ont également estimé la masse de cet hydrogène dans le disque en rotation : entre 10−5 to 10−4 masse solaire, avec une densité entre 105 to 106 atomes par centimètre cube. La plage de valeurs dépend de l'hypothèse faite sur la géométrie du disque.

Etant donné que l'émission de la raie H30α à 1,3 mm semble un peu plus forte que ce qui était attendu, les astrophysiciens pensent que cette transition est amplifiée par un processus maser (amplification micro-onde par stimulation de rayonnement), l'équivalent du laser pour les ondes millimétriques ou submillimétriques. 

Elena Murchikova et ses collaborateurs ont ainsi réussi à mettre en lumière le processus d'accrétion de gaz froid qui a lieu en ce moment autour de Sgr A*, qui est un bon exemple de trou noir à faible activité. Comme le processus d'accrétion de ces types de trous noirs supermassifs est complexe et encore mal cerné, ces résultats vont être précieux non seulement pour l'étude du cas particulier de notre galaxie, mais aussi pour d'autres galaxies qui abritent un trou noir aussi calme que Sgr A*...

Superresolution Interferometric Imaging with Sparse Modeling Using Total Squared Variation --- Application to Imaging the Black Hole Shadow. (arXiv:1802.05783v2 [astro-ph.IM] UPDATED)

We propose a new superresolution imaging technique for interferometry using sparse modeling, utilizing two regularization terms: the $\ell_1$-norm and a new function named Total Squared Variation (TSV) of the brightness distribution. TSV is an edge-smoothing variant of Total Variation (TV), leading to reducing the sum of squared gradients. First, we demonstrate that our technique may achieve super-resolution of $\sim 30$% compared to the traditional CLEAN beam size using synthetic observations of two point sources. Second, we present simulated observations of three physically motivated static models of Sgr A* with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) to show the performance of proposed techniques in greater detail. We find that $\ell_1$+TSV regularization outperforms $\ell_1$+TV regularization with the popular isotropic TV term and the Cotton-Schwab CLEAN algorithm, demonstrating that TSV is well-matched to the expected physical properties of the astronomical images, which are often nebulous. Remarkably, in both the image and gradient domains, the optimal beam size minimizing root-mean-squared errors is $\lesssim 10$% of the traditional CLEAN beam size for $\ell_1$+TSV regularization, and non-convolved reconstructed images have smaller errors than beam-convolved reconstructed images. This indicates that the traditional post-processing technique of Gaussian convolution in interferometric imaging may not be required for the $\ell_1$+TSV regularization. We also propose a feature extraction method to detect circular features from the image of a black hole shadow with the circle Hough transform (CHT) and use it to evaluate the performance of the image reconstruction. With our imaging technique and the CHT, the EHT can constrain the radius of the black hole shadow with an accuracy of $\sim 10-20$% in present simulations for Sgr A*.

Rivoluzione MIFID 2: cosa cambia per gli investitori in 5 punti.

Una data è stata già fissata: 3 gennaio 2018, quando la MiFID 2 (o MiFID II) entrerà in vigore promettendo di rivoluzionare il mondo dei servizi finanziari in tutta Europa. Se non hai avuto tempo per spulciare tra le 148 pagine della “Direttiva sui Mercati degli Strumenti Finanziari”, non preoccuparti perché ti trovi nel posto giusto. In questo articolo, apprenderai quali sono i cambiamenti più importanti della Mifid 2. Ed inoltre, scoprirai che impatto avrà la MIFID 2 per i piccoli risparmiatori e investitori come te.

Cos’è la MIFID 2?

A partire dal 2007, la MIFID è stata la pietra angolare della regolamentazione UE dei mercati finanziari. Da allora, di acqua sotto i ponti ne è passata parecchia. La crisi finanziaria e gli scandali bancari che hanno coinvolto migliaia di piccoli investitori, hanno reso indispensabile riesaminare le regole del gioco. La Commissione europea ha così adottato una serie di nuove norme (MiFID 2 e MIFIR) che rivoluzionano il quadro dei servizi di investimento in Europa.

Cosa cambierà con la MIFID 2?

La MIFID II tocca molti aspetti tra cui la consulenza, la vendita e le informazioni sui costi dei prodotti finanziari. Ecco i 5 punti chiave della direttiva MIFID 2 per gli investitori:

1)   Fornire maggiore trasparenza sui prezzi e sui costi

La MIFID 2 comporterà una maggiore trasparenza sui costi e sui prezzi degli strumenti finanziari sia prima sia dopo la loro negoziazione. Per gli intermediari, vi è l'onere di rendere note queste informazioni al cliente almeno una volta all'anno.

2) Prevedere una categorizzazione dei clienti

Le norme MIFID 2 obbligano i fornitori di prodotti di investimento a categorizzare i clienti in investitori al dettaglio o investitori professionali. Questa targettizzazione è stata proposta per ai fini della divulgazione e segnalazione delle informazioni nonchè per l'idoneità all'investimento per certi tipi di prodotti.

3)   Aumentare il monitoraggio sui prodotti di investimento venduti in Europa

La MIFID 2 attribuisce nuovi poteri ai regolatori nazionali per monitorare gli strumenti finanziari e i prodotti più strutturati che vengono distribuiti in Europa. Tra questi, vi è la possibilità di restringere o vietare la commercializzazione di prodotti che non rispondono a determinate caratteristiche di trasparenza.

4)   Garantire la "Best Execution"

I fornitori di servizi finanziari devono garantire la best execution alla loro clientela, e cioè dimostrare che l'ordine di investimento venga fatto alle migliori condizioni di mercato.  

5)   Rafforzare la protezione degli investitori

Gli intermediari finanziari devono agire in conformità agli interessi dei loro clienti fornendo loro informazioni più dettagliate in merito ai prodotti e ai servizi offerti o venduti. I consulenti finanziari dovranno consigliare prodotti e servizi sulla base dell'esperienza, conoscenza, obiettivo e profilo di rischio/rendimento del cliente.

MIFID 2 e investitori retail: aumenta la trasparenza sui costi

Quanto paghiamo realmente per i prodotti di investimento che sottoscriviamo? La maggioranza degli investitori non saprebbe rispondere con esattezza a questa domanda. Non vi è dubbio che la novità più grande della MIFID 2 riguarderà proprio la maggiore trasparenza sui costi e sui servizi di investimento. D’ora in avanti, gli intermediari finanziari (banche, SGR, SIM,etc.) dovranno essere più chiari e trasparenti sulle spese e sulle commissioni pagate dai clienti. Almeno una volta all’anno, vi sarà l’obbligo di inviare al cliente informazioni dettagliate su tutti i costi e gli oneri relativi agli strumenti finanziari e ai servizi accessori (quali ad esempio la consulenza).  Questo aiuterà l'investitore a comprendere più da vicino qual è l’impatto dei costi sui rendimenti degli investimenti. Per i fondi comuni di investimento, ad esempio, dovrà essere fatta menzione dei costi di gestione, di consulenza e delle commissioni di entrata e di uscita del fondo. I consulenti finanziari, infine, dovranno comunicare al cliente se il servizio di consulenza è fornito su base indipendente o meno.

Cosa ne pensiamo della MIFID 2?

Una maggiore trasparenza sui mercati finanziari non può che essere di buon auspicio per l'universo dei piccoli risparmiatori e investitori. Lo scopo principale della MIFID è senz'altro quello rendere meno onerosa la possibilità di valutare e scegliere i prodotti di investimento sulla base dei costi e della qualità dell'offerta. Tutto questo, favorirà nel tempo una sana e corretta competizione di mercato tra gli intermediari finanziari. Concreti passi in avanti si sono già fatti verso questa direzione. 2 - Democrazia energetica e politica industriale: un mondo nuovo

È una sfida per l’umanità, come se fosse l’arrivo degli alieni, solo che gli alieni siamo proprio noi.  Siamo gli asteroidi di noi stessi. Le cause stesse delle migrazioni forzate, anche se ci piace parlare di invasione, siamo noi, anche in ragione di invasioni precedenti, che non sono affatto finite, peraltro. Attività estrattive, spesso predatorie, land grabbing, coltivazioni intensive, con il solito corredo di armi e violenza .  E tra queste, ci sono i cambiamenti climatici a peggiorare le condizioni economiche e sociali di centinaia di milioni di persone, rendendo completamente inospitali i luoghi dove nascono e vivono. 

Possiamo dividerci su qualsiasi cosa, ma se non prendiamo sul serio la questione, subito e tutti insieme, non andremo da nessuna parte, come capita a chi sta ad Approdo del re e vede arrivare l’inverno e le forze oscure che porta con sé, per citare la serie TV più citata dell’estate. 

E siamo asteroidi di noi stessi anche rispetto ad altre "emergenze annunciate", come quelle legate al dissesto idrogeologico e allo stato delle nostre infrastrutture, tutte cose di cui ci preoccupiamo solo quando il diluvio (per ora con la "d" minuscola) puntualmente arriva, anche a causa dei cambiamenti climatici, e colpisce più forte i nostri territori meno protetti. 

Un’insicurezza non percepita, per ribaltare lo schema che occupa totalmente il dibattito pubblico, dovuta a speculazioni, a incuria, ma anche all'ignoranza e alla sordità rispetto ai moniti della comunità scientifica, soprattutto quando vengono da quegli enti di ricerca e di controllo che vengono depotenziati e la cui libertà e terzietà è sempre più messa in discussione. 

Eppure il contrasto al dissesto idrogeologico non produrrebbe solo maggior sicurezza e maggior cultura e consapevolezza, ma sarebbe anche un grande meccanismo di creazione di posti di lavoro. Per affrontare questa grande transizione cui ci troviamo di fronte, che lega i cambiamenti climatici, la scomparsa del lavoro, una crisi ambientale e sociale mai così profonda, e la concentrazione della ricchezza nelle mani di pochissimi, la dipendenza del nostro Paese da parte di dittatori sanguinari che concorrono all’inasprimento di conflitti planetari, dobbiamo scegliere un approccio globale e locale allo stesso tempo. Un approccio che risolve il dilemma tra ambiente e lavoro e, anzi, valorizza entrambi: la sfida della democrazia energetica, da conseguire attraverso la conversione ecologica dell’economia. I pilastri della rivoluzione ambientale non possono che essere, da un lato, il salto dall’economia lineare a quella circolare, che punti alla scomparsa del concetto stesso di “rifiuto”; dall’altro lato, la riduzione dei consumi energetici (e di risorse), e la loro contestuale conversione verso la totale decarbonizzazione, che si innesca sia investendo in programmi di efficientamento energetico, sia liberando le energie rinnovabili dalle norme fossili che le imbrigliano, permettendo così alle imprese di guadagnare in competitività e alle famiglie di liberare risorse per altri consumi e investimenti. Costruire democrazia energetica vuol dire passare alle fonti rinnovabili ma, soprattutto, operare una concorrenza diffusa ai grandi player: i cittadini e le comunità devono diventare protagonisti e riappropriarsi di un settore strategico come quello energetico che, non dimentichiamolo, troppo spesso ha condizionato relazioni internazionali pericolose, dal punto di vista dei diritti umani e dal punto di vista delle conseguenze ambientali. Basta sussidi a chi inquina Il processo di transizione deve essere pianificato e facilitato: una strada è l’istituzione di un contributo ecologico di piccole dimensioni, ma dalle potenzialità enormi. Un contributo fissato a regime, a seguito di una fase transitoria che favorisca i processi di conversione, a 20 euro a tonnellata di CO2, equivarrebbe a un gettito di 6,5 miliardi di euro all’anno, da destinarsi interamente alla riduzione della tassazione sui redditi di famiglie e imprese, a incentivi fiscali per investimenti “green”, ad alleggerire il costo dell’energia per gli utenti finali. Grazie a questo provvedimento stimiamo una riduzione annua delle emissioni di CO2 pari al 3,5%. Le politiche seguite finora vanno, invece, in tutt’altra direzione. Se, in Europa, l’Italia gioca una pessima partita, al fianco di chi vuole rendere gli obiettivi sull’efficienza energetica al 2030 ancor meno ambiziosi di quelli attuali (già modesti), in casa le cose non vanno meglio: nel 2017 lo stesso Ministero dell’ambiente ha certificato che i sussidi ambientali dannosi, erogati dallo Stato italiano a settori produttivi che hanno effetti negativi sull’ambiente, hanno raggiunto un importo superiore ai 16 miliardi di euro. Sono risorse che, attraverso un graduale piano di disimpegno, possono essere indirizzate a interventi virtuosi sia dal punto di vista industriale e occupazionale (si stimano 200mila unità di lavoro) che dal punto di vista ambientale. 

L’obiettivo deve essere quello di costruire un sistema diffuso e intelligente di produzione e consumo dell’energia, applicabile a tutti i settori, da quello domestico alla PA, da quello dei trasporti, passando per l’agricoltura e il manifatturiero, per il turismo e per la distribuzione delle merci, fino ad ogni aspetto dell’economia e della società. Mentre tutto Europa e tutto il mondo – anche quello economico-finanziario, non solo politico – delinea una transizione verso le auto elettriche, da noi è ancora discussione per pochi intimi, ritenuti folli sognatori. Gli esempi virtuosi e le eccellenze in Italia non mancano. Per favorire e moltiplicare l’iniziativa dei cittadini, come singoli o riuniti sotto forme cooperative, c’è però bisogno di creare un contesto chiaro, basato su un sistema omogeneo di regole che garantisca sicurezza, trasparenza e compatibilità paesaggistica dei nuovi impianti di produzione di energia da fonti rinnovabili. Un contesto che, invece di aprire e chiudere finestre di benefici che poi alimentano speculazioni e esperienze “mordi e fuggi”, faccia stabilizzare le imprese più serie, portatrici di valori aggiunti sociali ed ambientali, le amministrazioni locali, e che possa valorizzare anche il risparmio dei cittadini. Diverse le azioni in grado di moltiplicare i benefici. Dobbiamo consentire, liberalizzandola, la costruzione di reti elettriche private alimentate da fonti rinnovabili che presentino le caratteristiche dei sistemi di distribuzione chiusi, e dobbiamo favorire l’auto-consumo, lo scambio e la distribuzione di energia all’interno degli edifici, tra aziende limitrofe, nei consorzi industriali, all’interno dell’amministrazione pubblica. Dobbiamo liberare le pubbliche amministrazioni dal vincolo del pareggio di bilancio per interventi che, grazie all’efficienza energetica, consentano di ridurre drasticamente le spese correnti, nel caso istituendo anche un fondo di rotazione dedicato. Dobbiamo rendere più ambiziosa l’esperienza della defiscalizzazione degli interventi di efficientamento energetico in edilizia (per singole unità immobiliari e per condomini), ampliando la possibilità di cessione del credito e sostenendola con strumenti che agevolino anche il reperimento delle risorse necessaria, in particolare per gli interventi più radicali e innovativi. Dobbiamo restituire, con il dovuto rigore, un quadro più chiaro alla  gestione del sistema dei titoli di efficienza energetica, completando e rendendo rapidamente operative le nuove regole ed eliminando ogni elemento di retroattività e arbitrarietà dei provvedimenti relativi ai progetti già in corso. Dall’amianto all’energia pulita Pensiamo anche al miliardo di metri quadrati di tetti all’amianto che coprono ancora le nostre case. Un materiale killer, invisibile e silenzioso, che ha causato migliaia di vittime, in particolare per il mesotelioma pleurico e per altre forme di tumori asbesto-correlati, non solo tra gli esposti diretti per motivi di lavoro ma anche solo per esposizione ambientale alle fibre, incontrollabile e casuale. Il “collegato ambientale” ha disposto circa 17 milioni di euro per le bonifiche nella forma di un bonus fiscale al 50%, limitatamente alle imprese e con l’esclusione degli investimenti di importo unitario inferiore a 20mila euro. L’incentivo non è condizionato alla sostituzione dell’amianto con i tetti fotovoltaici. L'unico sistema che si è rivelato in grado di attivare in poco tempo la rimozione di una quota significativa delle coperture, è stato quello di associare un extra-incentivo al conto energia dedicato al fotovoltaico. Stabiliamo una sola forma di incentivo all’installazione dei pannelli fotovoltaici, cancellando gli ulteriori limiti della norma, allargando a tutti i proprietari di immobili, sia persone fisiche che giuridiche e senza alcuna restrizione circa gli importi di spesa, quantificando il contributo nella misura di 0,05 euro/kWh di energia prodotta, per venti anni. Per facilitare l’investimento dei privati Anche a questo scopo è opportuno dotare il Paese di una “banca per lo sviluppo industriale” senza gli oneri e i costi di struttura di una licenza bancaria, costituendo una più snella Società di gestione del risparmio (Sgr) che gestisca fondi di investimento che finanzino la nascita di aziende, ad alto contenuto di innovazione: una Sgr dotata di autonomia nella scelta degli investimenti e che goda di un rapporto privilegiato con i centri di ricerca pubblici e universitari e con gli investitori istituzionali. Parallelamente è necessario favorire la nascita di Srl di investimento, Business Angels, ossia soggetti privati che come attività prendono partecipazioni e finanziano le primissime fasi di sviluppo di aziende innovative. In Italia i Business Angels hanno un impatto molto limitato nel rinnovamento del tessuto industriale del Paese a causa dalla vigente normativa finanziaria che impedisce loro di associarsi facilmente facendo massa critica e di giocare un ruolo realmente significativo – fattore che tutela in tal modo il monopolio bancario sul finanziamento delle imprese. Ecco perché è necessario inserire nel nostro ordinamento la possibilità di costituire Srl d’investimento con non più di cento investitori (e quota minima di 50mila euro per investitore) come negli USA, dove questo modello ha mostrato effetti positivi. Dal consumo di suolo alla rigenerazione urbana Dobbiamo liberarci dai condizionamenti di chi da troppi anni sta ipotecando il nostro futuro attraverso politiche economiche di brevissimo periodo, in cui la vicinanza al potere e il controllo del consenso pubblico sono i veri fattori determinanti. Dinamiche che sono assolutamente evidenti nella gestione del territorio: basta eleggere un consigliere comunale per indirizzare una scelta urbanistica. 

Da decenni il consumo di suolo viaggia a una velocità fantascientifica, con punte di dieci metri quadrati al secondo negli anni ’90, un ritmo che non si può spiegare solo con la crescita demografica e che ha avuto e avrà, scrive Ispra, «una serie di effetti diretti sul ciclo idrologico e indiretti sul microclima producendo un aumento del rischio inondazioni». 

Dobbiamo ribaltare il paradigma urbanistico vigente spostando l’obiettivo sul migliorare la qualità della vita dei cittadini, che spendono gran parte della propria esistenza nelle aree già urbanizzate, rigenerandole, rendendole resilienti e in grado di sostenere i cambiamenti del clima (a partire dagli eventi meteorologici estremi, sempre più frequenti), correggendo gli errori dovuti alla mancata o alla disordinata pianificazione. 

È nelle aree già urbanizzate che vecchie e nuove esigenze abitative e insediative possono essere soddisfatte ed è qui che si gioca la sfida della riqualificazione profonda di edifici e di interi quartieri, che dovranno in pochi anni arrivare a ridurre il loro fabbisogno al 20% o 30% degli attuali consumi. Se le previsioni di espansione contenute nei piani urbanistici non sono neppure avviate dopo cinque anni dalla loro approvazione queste devono decadere. Le stesse previsioni di espansione devono essere limitate al perimetro delle aree urbanizzate, istituendo parallelamente un limite al consumo di suolo. È – ancora una volta – anche una questione di uguaglianza. Perché il suolo è un bene comune e perché il suo consumo genera costi collettivi e pubblici. In Italia il peso degli oneri di urbanizzazione e dei contributi sul costo di costruzione è compreso tra il 4% e l’8% del prezzo finito al metro quadrato, mentre nelle città tedesche la quota sale fino al 30%. Ne ricaveremo risorse con le quali finanziare opere di bonifica, riqualificazione e messa in sicurezza del patrimonio edilizio, di riduzione del rischio idrogeologico, e per l’acquisizione e la realizzazione di aree verdi. Sarebbe un’occasione per intervenire anche sulle barriere architettoniche, particolarmente impattanti negli edifici pubblici, negli esercizi commerciali, nell’accesso al trasporto pubblico: una vera e propria rigenerazione, che in tema di accessibilità deve comunque essere anticipata da misure più minimali ma non meno efficaci (pensiamo all’esempio di Amsterdam con le rampe o ai danni causati da chi utilizza impropriamente i parcheggi dedicati alle persone con invalidità). 

A tutela dell’acqua e del sottosuolo 

Altri beni comuni da tutelare sono quelli che vengono letteralmente “estratti” dal sottosuolo: la legislazione vigente prevede un sistema di tassazione assolutamente irrisorio per i materiali edili estratti dalle cave e per i prelievi idrici di acque minerali, mentre gli operatori economici di questi settori producono, sull’estrazione e la rivendita, enormi guadagni. Mediamente nelle casse delle Regioni entrano 40 centesimi di euro per metro cubo di sabbia e ghiaia estratte, mentre in altri paesi si toccano cifre pari a 3 euro al metro cubo. 

Con un semplice adeguamento, le Regioni incasserebbero oltre 230 milioni di euro aggiuntivi rispetto ai 36 attualmente incassati. Con un medesimo adeguamento per le acque minerali, le Regioni incasserebbero in totale 125 milioni di euro all’anno, contro i 10 attuali. 

Non si tratta solamente di fare cassa, ma di trovare un equilibrio tra ambiente e legittimi interessi economici. L’estrazione delle acque minerali non può che richiamare alla memoria la gestione dell’acqua pubblica, oggetto di un quesito referendario che ribadì la volontà popolare di investire in una gestione pubblica e collettiva dell’acqua, ma a seguito del quale sono stati più i tentativi di sabotare l’esito del referendum (fermati dalla Corte costituzionale) che quelli di darvi attuazione. 

Dobbiamo invece ascoltare la volontà popolare che si è manifestata con una chiarezza incontrovertibile. È il momento di immaginare un modello di gestione pubblico funzionale ed efficiente, guardando a modelli virtuosi già presenti in Europa, a partire dal caso di Parigi: un sistema pubblico integrato, dalla distribuzione alla depurazione. 

Trasporti: la cura del silicio 

Parlando di territorio e sviluppo, è prioritario intervenire anche sull’enorme questione dei trasporti attraverso una revisione complessiva delle priorità nel campo delle infrastrutture. 

Ritornato di moda il ponte sullo Stretto, confermata (anche se molto ridimensionata) la linea del Tav in Valsusa, si deve procedere a una rigorosa analisi costi-benefici, che è sempre incredibilmente mancata. Un nuovo piano deve comprendere la mobilità dolce, ciclabile e pedonale, e le infrastrutture ad essa collegate. Per quanto riguarda le concessioni, dopo la proroga dello Sblocca Italia, si deve tornare a una gestione più selettiva e concorrenziale, in cui lo Stato regolatore faccia sentire la propria presenza, verificando che gli investimenti siano realizzati. Anche in questo caso, si deve puntare all’alleanza tra tecnologia e ecologia e promuovere ricerca e programmi sul campo, con l’obiettivo di creare un nuovo ecosistema e abbattere drasticamente le emissioni. In questo senso sarà indispensabile la condivisione dei dati e fare parte di una rete, per ottimizzare qualsiasi spostamento: non varrà solamente per i taxi e lo spostamento delle persone, ma anche per lo spostamento delle merci. Dobbiamo essere in grado di anticipare le trasformazioni del futuro e promuovere convogli di veicoli con sistemi di guida automatizzati che riducono la congestione e l’inquinamento, veicoli più efficienti e meno inquinanti, con la conseguente riduzione degli incidenti stradali e dei costi assicurativi. La retorica della «cura del ferro» non deve trasformarsi in un mantra puntualmente contraddetto nella pratica ma deve integrarsi con la politica della «cura del silicio». Così ci potremo muovere con costi più bassi, a emissioni ridotte, su veicoli e infrastrutture meno onerosi. Puntando sull’innovazione e però sulle garanzie, perché sia a disposizione di tutti, non solo proprietà di pochi. Per superare rendite di posizione, senza crearne di nuove.

Modalità di trasporto intelligente devono andare di pari passo con modalità di lavoro intelligente, capaci di portare risultati su diversi fronti: dall’inquinamento atmosferico e ai conseguenti effetti sulla salute, alla vivibilità delle città, all’ottimizzazione del tempo, fino alla competitività della nostra economia. 

Suggeriamo quindi di cambiare approccio, partendo dal considerare mobilità e traffico stradale nel loro complesso, investendo sul telelavoro, introducendo una disciplina organica e rendendolo appetibile per le imprese rimodulando la tassazione d’impresa sulla base dell’adesione ad un nuovo piano sulla mobilità che abbia come obiettivo anche la salvaguardia della continuità e qualità del rapporto di lavoro. Una riflessione che tocca anche la categoria dei lavoratori protetti che troppo spesso, nonostante gli obblighi di legge, sono vittime di chi preferisce pagare una multa. Nuove tecnologie nella domotica, uffici intelligenti e modi smart di pensare al lavoro sono una strategia per ribaltare lo schema. 

Turismo: per un’offerta coordinata e orientata al turista 

Una sentiero di sviluppo economico del Paese, da sempre oggetto di iniziative governative non all’altezza, è sicuramente il turismo. Un settore che soffre dell’assenza di un coordinamento nazionale che definisca una strategia di sviluppo e relative linee guida, e di un totale scollamento tra gli attori pubblici e privati. È necessario cambiare il paradigma esistente, passando da un ormai obsoleto approccio esclusivamente promozionale ad un approccio promo-commerciale, di forte sinergia tra pubblico e privato, con l’obiettivo di valorizzare, migliorare, aggiornare e rendere più fruibile il prodotto turistico “Italia”. Una politica di gestione regionale del turismo ha causato frammentazione e indebolimento dell’offerta. Enti tra loro non coordinati che generano spesso ridondanza e utilizzano in maniera non efficiente le risorse in campo. Un’offerta coordinata e che coinvolga anche un livello nazionale secondo uno schema piramidale è l’elemento chiave per favorire la propensione all’acquisto da parte del consumatore finale ed è il principale elemento strutturale sul quale costruire anche un’offerta integrata europea da proporre ai potenziali turisti oltre oceano. È necessario passare da un approccio orientato al “prodotto”, ad un approccio orientato al “turista”, innescando un circolo virtuoso in grado di favorire la commercializzazione quale strumento anche di tutela e valorizzazione del territorio. Un approccio che deve andare di pari passo col superamento dell’Agenzia Nazionale del Turismo e la creazione di un Convention & Visitors Bureau Nazionale che risponda al Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico. Un punto di aggregazione, di sinergia, di coordinamento e di regolamentazione chiara per l’offerta privata, da un lato; dall’altro, chiaro riconoscimento dell’offerta da parte del turista, all’interno del panorama global

Kado 7 (includes notes on Kado 6.5 + Tsukigakirei 6.5)

Some notes on the recap: It’s interesting they styled the title card to be like a silent movie, but the embellishments in the top corners are high-tech. Tsukigakirei’s recap was a slog because it awkwardly cut, but because of all the indications of time and the fact there’s already a narrator, this show fits a recap style much better (but the titlecards and changing of the eyecatch make this ep feel fresh, which is great!). Also, it seems I was wrong about how it had been three days since Kado’s appearance (see ep 5’s commentary), because the counter hits 5 days when the first passengers are released.

Wait…that “brain” was a device???

“Hi Setten”, LOL. Also, I found out “kado” (with this combo of kanji -> 過度) can mean “excess” or “immoderation”, and “setten” means “settings” or “options”...I first remember seeing the word in the Boueibu game, where “setten” of course would refer to things like “volume on/off” and that.

Apparently, the Google CEO’s name is Sundar Pichai…I thought it was Larry Page and Sergey Brin as co-CEOs, but I guess I was wrong…Also notice Ward’s iPad says “ihou sonzai” (anisotropic being).

I’ve seen the “I can’t dry my laundry!” screenshot before, but seeing it in context is funny all over again. In fact, it makes it even funnier.

I was worried about how the show might get a little too philosophical after ep 6’s end, but it’s good to see Hanamori retains his sleeping capabilities. *stifles laughter* They even rendered Hanamori’s bedhead.

“Kado comes here, and instead of running, they find a way to market it.” – It’s an interesting, yet extremely obvious point that we tend to ignore because we’re so used to it. That’s why tourism – even fake tourism - sells. Why do I bring this up? Because I want to, for one, and because I hope to exploit this angle for Half-Paid Heroes. (I wanna know how to make Kado cake, too…)

This “stacks of books” scene is something like what I imagined when I wrote White Parasite’s La Luna’s hideout in the mountains…that’s one of the reasons I’ve been able to give Kado and zaShunina an unyielding love. Also, I thought the promo 2D Shunina looked creepy, so this 2D shot of Shunina stole my heart!!!

Okay. I thought Kado would be a show devoid of such things, but let’s play the game of “What drugs were the producers on today?”

Okkkkkkkkkay. (stifles laughter) Did you realise the Shunina heads made a heart, with the “real” (existing in the normal dimensions) Shunina in the middle? Hahaha…

Wait. That screaming thing in episode…2, I think it was? The bit where Shindo grabs his head in agony?...was Shunina giving him (Shindo) the sense of the anisotropic? Ahhhhhhhhh. That makes sense now!

“They were good humans.” – Just in case you didn’t forget Shunina is an extradimensional bishie being. I guess it’s kind of along the lines of Kai’s (Royal Tutor’s) “You’re all good boys!”, which is true both there and here. In most cases (except maybe Shunina and Ward), the boys of Kado are good boys.

A bookmark. For an avid reader like Shunina (or myself…haha), it’s a perfect gift. Just make sure they’re not so heavy they fall out of books, because then they’re useless.

They put the festival scene in 2D! (It would be a cost cutting measure for sure, but…you know what I said about 2D Shunina previously? Yeah, that.) Also, it just goes to show you even a high concept sci-fi show like this goes for the jugular in depicting fanservice for the “people who like hot guys” and “people who like tsunderes”. However, did Shunina change his own clothes? Did Shindo or someone else get the yukata for him? Does Shunina even have the concept of “changing clothes”???

These (mostly still) shots of theme parks just make it seem like the staff are scrounging for money.

According to the omake at the end of one ep, you’re meant to ship Roman with the teacher (as ick as that is), so I can understand why Roman’s on his lonesome.

I feel like the word “viva” is being overdone, attendant person. Google-sensei says the word means “live (verb)”, so it doesn’t make sense at all.

Hira’s freckles really don’t seem to be a mistake. Also my brain can’t make sense of “sorabune” – the word for ship/boat is “fune”, but it doesn’t become “bune” when attached to another word...not that I know of, anyway.

It’s nice that they didn’t do the full-on “can on face at aumsement park” thing I’ve come to expect from romances, because Detective Conan kinda solidified that as the norm for me.

Josei Next Door did a CR article where she suggested people needed to talk to each other more, and while it was on The Royal Tutor, sometimes I wish Akane and Kotarou would talk to each other properly too…welp, I spoke too soon (sort of).Why “sort of”? Because Kotarou is speaking to Hira, but he ain’t speaking to Akane.

I feel a twinge of guilt in that I wanted Chinatsu’s and Hira’s dreams to be shattered to make way for the canon couple, and Chinatsu’s tears exacerbate that feeling. I guess this is what it’s like to be a shipper, eh – to ignore the feelings of couples in order to get your own way, knowing your dreams may not even become reality? (But can’t these kids all be happy??? It could easily be a “pair the spares” situation, now that I think of it.)

The takoyaki’s nice, but that background with the screaming girl is creepy…It appears to be a parody on Beavertails, for some odd reason. Why is there a Canadian product being used as product placement in an anime (and why a product I’ve only ever heard of from a Canadian TV show, to boot)???...*record scratch* Okay, I’m weirded out, and I admit defeat. Beavertails exist in Japan.

Finally, a part of Tsukigakirei I can get behind! These night scenes are so real! If it weren’t for Kotarou and Akane, I’d think these scenes to be photos and not animation at all.

I get this feeling that we’ll end with either their graduation or them as adults, with Kotarou telling their kids “…and this is how I met your mother.” Which would be awkward as all get out, but okay. (I haven’t seen How I Met Your Mother by the way, although it sounds like a scenario that would happen in it…)

Aw, dangit. They got their kiss interrupted. At least it wasn’t by Chinatsu, that would’ve caused more tears on her end.

Mireta (used in “Did you see the fireworks?”) seems to be an odd formation of mieta, but in slang, people break the grammar rules all the time, so I’d suspect people break the spelling rules too.

I was surprised to find out this ep’s ED LINE chat is a wife to a husband. That confirms my How I Met Your Mother thoughts, somewhat. (The husband had overtime and got the wife juice. It seems they were going to an event, because the wife says to check the invitation guest list...and so on, so forth.)

Vous n'êtes pas sans savoir qu'en avril dernier a eu lieu une semaine d'observation totalement inédite : l'observation du trou noir supermassif de notre galaxie Sgr A* ainsi que celle du trou noir supermassif de la galaxie M87, dans le but de produire une image de leur silhouette. Ces observations ont été effectuées par un réseau interférométrique de radiotélescopes à très très longue base, avec des unités réparties sur plusieurs continents : l'Event Horizon Telescope. Son directeur, Shep Doeleman, vient de fournir un état des lieux de l'analyse des données en cours...

La bonne nouvelle, c'est que tous les observatoires impliqués, huit au total (à Hawaii, en Arizona, en France (NOEMA), en Espagne, au Mexique, au Chili, et au pôle Sud), ont tous très bien fonctionné durant la campagne d'acquisition de données et que la grosse majorité des données ont été rassemblées au Haystack Observatory du MIT et au Max Planck Institüt fûr Radioastronomie à Bonn, où les supercalculateurs ont déjà combiné les signaux pour produire des jeux de données "brutes". Les chercheurs sont en train de calibrer ces données afin d'éliminer tous les effets instrumentaux et pour les formater pour fabriquer des images pouvant être analysées scientifiquement. La mauvaise nouvelle, car il y en a une, c'est qu'il manque le jeu de données essentiel qui est celui du South Pole Telescope. Ce n'est en effet seulement qu'à la fin de l'hiver austral que des scientifiques ont pu se rendre à la base Amundsen-Scott où est implanté le radiotélescope antarctique, pour récupérer les disques durs sur lesquels sont enregistrées les très précieuses données. Et Shep Doeleman annonce que ce n'est que vers la mi-novembre que toutes les données seront dans les mains des astrophysiciens du MIT et du Max Planck Institute. Il paraît donc difficile que l'on puisse voir l'image tant attendue avant le fin de l'année... Heureusement, on sait déjà que le South Pole Telescope a fonctionné tout à fait normalement, une petite partie des données ayant été transmise par satellite juste après la semaine d'observation.

Les chercheurs de la collaboration de l'Event Horizon Telescope, en attendant, ont poursuivi leurs développements d'algorithmes d'imagerie. Le 6 septembre dernier s'est terminé le dernier 'Imaging Challenge' de l'EHT, dans lequel les groupes membres de la collaboration devaient appliquer différentes techniques d'imagerie sur des faux jeux de données synthétisés à partir de véritables images test. Les résultats des différentes équipes vont être comparés et discutés la semaine prochaine au MIT. Ce blind test scientifique va permettre aux chercheurs de choisir les meilleures méthodes, et va renforcer la confiance des physiciens dans la puissance qu'offre l'Event Horizon Telescope, d'après son directeur.

Il faut également préciser que les chercheurs et ingénieurs de l'EHT ont fait des avancées techniques importantes. Non seulement les observations d'avril une fois combinées entre elles forment les données interférométriques à longue base obtenues aux plus petites longueurs d'ondes depuis les débuts de l'interférométrie radio, mais ils ont également réussi à élargir la bande passante observée en la multipliant par 10 par rapport à ce qu'on savait faire il y a quelques années. Ils ont par ailleurs développé de techniques d'analyses fondées sur des modélisations très détaillées du phénomène d'accrétion des trous noirs. 

L'image que devrait fournir l'EHT est la silhouette de lumière radio induite par le gaz chaud entourant le trou noir à proximité immédiate de son horizon. La dynamique de la matière entourant les trous noirs devrait aussi pouvoir être détectée par exemple si des blocs de matière chaude orbitent les trous noirs et qu'ils deviennent turbulents sous l'effet du champ gravitationnel hors norme qui y règne.

En février dernier, je vous annonçais que l'on verrait cette image de Sgr A* avant la fin de l'année. J'ai certainement pêché par excès d'optimisme, ignorant qu'il n'y avait pas de vols pour la base Amundsen-Scott de tout l'hiver et que les disques durs devraient rester de longs mois au froid... Au vu des précisions apportées par le responsable scientifique de l'EHT aujourd'hui, on peut penser que nous aurons une belle surprise avant l'été (boréal) 2018...

We propose a new imaging technique for radio and optical/infrared interferometry. The proposed technique reconstructs the image from the visibility amplitude and closure phase, which are standard data products of short-millimeter very long baseline interferometers such as the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) and optical/infrared interferometers, by utilizing two regularization functions: the $\ell_1$-norm and total variation (TV) of the brightness distribution. In the proposed method, optimal regularization parameters, which represent the sparseness and effective spatial resolution of the image, are derived from data themselves using cross validation (CV). As an application of this technique, we present simulated observations of M87 with the EHT based on four physically motivated models. We confirm that $\ell_1$+TV regularization can achieve an optimal resolution of $\sim 20-30$% of the diffraction limit $\lambda/D_{\rm max}$, which is the nominal spatial resolution of a radio interferometer. With the proposed technique, the EHT can robustly and reasonably achieve super-resolution sufficient to clearly resolve the black hole shadow. These results make it promising for the EHT to provide an unprecedented view of the event-horizon-scale structure in the vicinity of the super-massive black hole in M87 and also the Galactic center Sgr A*.
