Another Murder Drones AU

"Uzi the Vampire Slayer"

I haven't seen the Buffy series in forever, and even then, I fixated on the early seasons.

This AU idea kept coming back to mind, so I had to write it out. It's not meant as a direct replica, just its' own thing that borrows elements from both shows. (Also, I apologize in advance if someone else has already done this!)

The Absolute Solver, an ancient horror awoken by the reckless greed of JCJensen In Spaaaace, now seeks to control and consume all life in the universe. It has created all sorts of monsters to be its' servants, none more feared than the vampire-like Disassembly Drones.

The Worker Drones only hope of safety is to stay barricaded behind the doors of their colony.

If only someone would slay the monsters, possibly even the Solver itself. But no one would be crazy enough to try that, right?

Uzi as Buffy

The daughter of Khan, maker of the colony's doors, and Nori, Copper Nine's first Slayer.

Nori disappeared one night during a mission, along with her own best friend, Yeva, when Uzi was still in her early teens.

Uzi has been very lonely since then, with her father dedicated almost entirely to colony security. There's only one other person she could possibly call her friend. Most others consider her weird for wanting to get outside and battle the monsters herself. When she finds her mother's journals about life as the Slayer, her resolve only grows stronger. Her personality is much the same as we know it💜

Doll as Willow

However, Doll's personality is very different in this AU.

Because of the close friendship between their families, she and Uzi grew up together, like cousins. Though both girls became more withdrawn and lonely when their moms disappeared, they still look after each other.

Doll's father is still alive here (calling him Adam, for now, because I don't know if he has an official name.) He is kind but very overprotective. She learns that her mother was also hiding a secret: she was trying to harness the Solver's own power to use against it, a practice that can overwhelm anyone who isn't strong enough to wield it.

She has faith in Yeva, and becomes obsessed with the idea that she, and possibly even Nori, are still alive somewhere. When Uzi takes on the mantle of the Slayer, Doll begins studying Solver magic to help in the fight.

Teacher as Giles

(Okay, I could not find a name for him, but did learn that he was voiced by Liam Vickers himself. With this in mind, I'm choosing a name that starts with "L". He is Linus until further notice.)

Though he appears eternally bored, Linus was a good friend to Uzi and Doll's parents. He also wants to rid Copper Nine of monsters, but acknowledges that he's no fighter. Instead, he studies the different creatures, learning all he can about their strengths and weaknesses, to help defeat them.

He's felt like a failure ever since Nori and Yeva disappeared. When their daughters approach him with their findings, wanting to continue the battle, he makes a personal vow not to repeat his mistakes.

He might not always express it, but he really does care about all the kids in his charge.

Even when they make him want to rip off his helmet and any hair that might be underneath it.

Lizzy as Cordelia

Lizzy was content to stay in her popular-girl world, until her own life was threatened by a Disassembly Drone (in this AU, there are many more than our original three) and she was rescued by Uzi. Ignoring the nightmares outside was no longer an option. She found that she had a talent for adventure and monster-fighting. No one was more surprised than she was.

Thad as Xander

Normal guy with a good heart and lifelong dreams of being a hero. He finds it easy to befriend just about anyone, and has a natural courage that drives him to fight for his friends, no matter how scary the situation. He's the most optimistic of the group. Also has a sarcastic sense of humor, which can either lighten the mood or drive their enemies crazy.

And that's Copper Nine's "Scooby gang".

Moving on now.

N as Angel

The only major change I see for N is that he's a little more serious and broody in this AU.

Deep down, he's still his lovable self. Along with J and V (who are more like his sisters here), they were pulled from their old lives on Earth by the Solver and transformed into one of the most feared Disassembly Squadrons on Copper Nine. Though he won't say it in front of them, he dreams of reclaiming his freedom.

When Uzi and her team start to become a real threat to the Solver, it orders N's squadron to destroy them. They clash several times, and despite everything, N finds himself impressed by Uzi’s courage. He soon realizes that she could be the key to destroying the Solver and setting them all free. But to help her would mean betraying his family and risking the anger of an ancient evil.

I honestly couldn't think of good character matches for J and V. Their original personalities still fit pretty well into this AU, I think. Initially they just do their jobs. When they begin to question if they can or should change sides, this creates conflict. V is eventually willing to rebel against the Solver, J is more hesitant.

While J is a fierce fighter, she is terrified of disobeying orders, the consequences that could come from it. She knows she will have to make a choice between life as the Solver's servant, or a chance at freedom.

Nuzi would still happen (because it's my favorite ship and I can't let it go), but it would be a slower burn.

Like I said, this is only a rough idea for an AU, but it wouldn't leave me alone. With Halloween coming up, it might be a good time to re-visit both series again.

I really, really wanted to make it to 201, but, alas.

It's been too many years since I read the Silmarillion. And I have to admit, elvish names are kind of hard, especially if the characters never really drew me in that much. (I loved reading it, loved the atmosphere, the stories. Most of the characters though - not that interested in them especially.

Other than that:

It took me a shamefully long time to remember Gil-galad. I'm sorry, Mark Ferguson. All those long years at Ring*Con...

What I am proud of remembering are the characters from the smaller works. Chrysophylax, the dragon from Farmer Giles of Ham, especially.

And Fang, Farmer Maggot's dog. :D

Generally speaking, if I remembered a name, remembering how to spell it was easy in most cases.

marigold gets into like a really weird passive aggressive Thing with willow because they both have a complex and they both need to be the weirdest smartest most adorable girl in the room and honestly there's a non zero chance they have some kind of xander/cordy makeout about it where it's so clear this is not what should be happening and yet it is for sure what's happening. she's tight with giles. this makes it worse

evie gets along really, really, really well with spike and drusilla, specifically because spike has a lot of experience dealing with women who communicate unconventionally and need a little extra support to function, and evie is incredibly forthright and sweet (and, crucially, unafraid of them both). i don't know if there's a romantic aspect to it but i know for certain that evie takes tea with drusilla and the two communicate with a lot of warmth and mutual respect.

roslin has an uncharacteristically shy crush on oz. i don't really think this helps marigold's standing with willow At All. she also really enjoys bothering giles because she thinks his life choices merit some general bullying. leave the teenage girls alone man

norie is outraged by anya's attempts to make herself small and appealing and tries to chase xander down and kill him to death about it. throws herself into being anya's self-help manual in a way that is very, very, very, very gay.

thea is so immediately obsessed with jenny it's not even funny but handles it SO BADLY by defaulting to her hundreds of years of Bluntly Flirtatious Womanizer and just going all in. jenny is delighted by the attention and even though thea is not necessarily her type in terms of personality. hot salt and pepper butch, yknow. in any au where these women meet the scoobies, giles and thea have been long term college friends for some time (i can do what i want), so the energy is very much "STOP FUCKING FLIRTING WITH MY WIFE???? STOP THAT" (giles) vs "man if your wife's looking at me when i flirt with her maybe you're not treating her right" (thea). this is the best day of jenny's entire life btw

2. this one is a little interesting because there's their dnd ages and their kinda general ages! thea in the fic is a dwarf, and i put her at about 260-ish, which i think would probably translate to late 50s/early 60s in an all human situation. roslin and lenora are both close enough to human that i think their late twenties/early thirties general ballpark would apply, and marigold, though she's in her late twenties in the fic, is kinda operating from a delayed half elven maturity, so i would place her very decisively at early twenties in an all human situation. evie is early twenties in the fic but i think she'd be like 18-19 (not a very big age gap btwn her and mari; similar levels of maturity). sofie's age is whatever i want it to be lol but always decisively a little kid.

3. sofie i shuffle in and out depending on how i'm feeling about it! she initially started out as marigold's apprentice but the narrative shifted and now she's very decisively marigold's little daughter. she's about 12 but i write her like she's 6 in the fic for Baby Elf Slowly Growing Up reasons, which means i'm still figuring out how old i would want her to be in an all human situation (the consistent through line is that mari is a little too young and flighty to raise a kid without the insane amount of third party support that she's managing, but she and sofie have a really deep connection). i sorta feel like she's a little too small to have a full-fledged character arc, but i definitely think about her as like 1/2 a bakery lady.

4. lion. hm. how much can i say without spoiling things. he grew up in a house with his abusive dad and evie's a lot of the reason he stayed alive through that, possibly. he loves her tremendously and sometimes when you are incredibly traumatized & there's only one person who matters to you, you will do some really, really fucked up things to them out of fear that they will leave.

5. THIS part i can say -- lion and evie are childhood friends! they connected at a time where both of their family situations were. Fraught. and they developed kind of a really intense trauma bond that eventually transitioned into romance. and then things got bad.

6. evie is a cryptid because when you grow up with undiagnosed adhd and your mother is insane you often do not actually learn how to fit in or understand other people.

7. see i actually really don't know how to answer that question because being popular is the antithesis of evie! she is so fundamentally disinterested when it comes to socializing with 80 percent of the general human population. either she loves a person or they don't exist to her. so like Could she be popular? hard to tell. she will literally never try. what matters to her is always gonna be the people in her heart and that's it.

(so much of why she, ahem, socializes with others comes from a place of wanting to reaffirm her connection to her body! it's brutally pragmatic. she talks to people if she needs to and That's It.)

8. oh norie's taste is not nearly that stable. the two Serious Crushes she's had are 1) comphet thing for a serial killer whose face she has literally never seen and 2) literal war criminal who has killed and will kill again. that woman is ONLY interested in women with a kill count and no regrets about it AND future murderous intent, and donovan simply does not meet that criteria even in some hypothetical fem version.

9. man i am sooo not in the headspace of the what you make guys so these answers may be a bit lackluster but i will try my best!

nora, hilariously, adores thea. extremely amused by thea's obvious obsession with her and is very clear about her devotion to her husband + her heterosexuality but thinks thea is SO GREAT and is delighted to meet a mom who has priorities very similar to her own! i think once thea gets her libido under control they're actually really great mom friends :')

donovan adores thea for similar reasons. she's very nora-shaped. actually as i'm typing this in ANY situation where nora was attracted to women or thea to men this could so easily be a "sometimes thea comes around for threesomes" situation but that is just not what's happening here. she's such a good friend though.

stacey is OBSESSED with roslin. they go shopping together and it's the best day of stacey's entire life.

ezra likes marigold a lot and by proxy is also pretty fond of sofie :') he follows mari around very quietly and watches her make things. marigold has never handled people's admiration well at all so she's kind of having a minor panic attack the entire time ESPECIALLY because sofie needs mommy's attention ALL the time or else she'll start causing problems. ezra picks up on this pretty fast and starts paying attention to sofie too. expert problem solver

bella loves evie full stop. same insane adhd girl hat.

art adores sofie and marigold!!! they've all three of them got the same excited effusive chattery sparkle. he and sofie start getting along really really well like i said which again is one of the reasons why bella hates that girl so fucking much.

10. like i said lmao thea is SOOOO into jenny but in a much more superficial way than most situations! really just wants to love her and leave her, which of course appeals to jenny as a concept as well (hooray mutually emotionally uninvolved while still intensely passionate sex EVERYBODY WINS), but jenny is with giles so jenny is like (deep sigh) i guess i can't fuck the hot butch lesbian because i'm in a "serious committed relationship" with my "husband." giles is like why are there quotation marks around both of those things jenny.

jaheira would for fucking sure go for giles. suddenly things are way less fun for thea. giles immediately starts flirting back as retribution for thea trying to steal his wife; jaheira is deliberately putting herself out there for giles in part because a hot younger (by her standards) gentleman with emotional problems does sound like a super fun time for her but ALSO because thea has spent like 30 years not texting her back despite them literally co-parenting children together at this point. Lo And Behold There Are Consequences, Althea!!!! (jenny isn't helping she thinks this is fucking hilarious)

11. jaheira's got five kids in canon :') and i actually did write up which bakery lady each kid gets along well with some time ago bc i was thinking about it soooooo

rion (jaheira's oldest, approx. early twenties) adores marigold because they have a mommy issues warriors bond and mari is just the sweetest little sugar cookie. they hang out a lot when they can and cheerfully Don't Talk About It but there's a real Existing Understanding.

jord (jaheira's other oldest, similar age as rion) is actually really tight with norie and i'm certain they get high together on occasion. it's a very quiet and not chatty at all relationship but it really emphasizes norie's softer side. <3

fig and jhessem (jaheira's young daughters, kinda same age as sofie) both are absolutely obsessed with roslin, because roslin is a total girly-girl which appeals to jhessem and roslin gets into a lot of bar fights which appeals to fig. jhessem however has had beef with sofie for a long time (sofie collects child enemies very easily because sofie cannot handle other children as a concept)

tate (jaheira's young son, also sofie's age) is very shy generally speaking. he does best with marigold, because she's warm like roslin but she can actually really do quiet stillness if it's for kids. sofie doesn't have as much of a problem with HIM because he mostly just wants to hang out in the same space as them, and he's not there often anyway.

12. neither elodie nor evie were adopted by thea for uhhhh reasons that are quite complicated but mostly boil down to "marigold was the only kid thea knew about at the time." evie shows up in marigold's life again in their twenties after quite a long time and it's awkward and strange and sad.

13. roslin's status as one of thea's adopted daughters came about in the dnd setting because her family (seven kids!!) wanted to send her to a less crowded place where she could learn a trustworthy trade <3 she writes her parents and siblings very often and she loves them very much! they don't have a strong narrative presence but they're super important to her. i would imagine that in a more modern setting she's staying with thea for similar job-related reasons but she calls her "mommy" because thea's a family friend + she spent a lot of her teen years living w/thea!!

Dodgers and Astros are top teams in baseball

Bellinger has been key in the Dodgers rise to 1st place

         The second half of the Major League Baseball season is already underway and there are two teams clearly separating themselves from the rest of the league. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros look like they are the favorites to meet the Fall Classic.

           Both teams would have to seriously collapse in order for them not to win their respective divisions. The Dodgers hold a 10.5-game lead over the Diamondbacks and the Astros have a whopping 15.5-game lead over the Mariners. It would actually be quite a shock if both of these teams didn’t end up with home field advantage during the playoffs in their respective leagues either. Right now it looks like the Nationals have a slight chance to unseat the Dodgers out of that top playoff seed. In the American League it looks like it’s the Astros for the taking.

           It’s hard to believe that at one point early in the season the Dodgers sported a 10-12 record. And now their record is 64-29! Over the last 33 games they are an astounding 29-4! They are excelling at defense, offense, fielding and pitching. They are doing no wrong.

           Their lineup 1-8 has no holes right now. When Yasiel Puig is hitting eighth in the lineup and has 18 home runs and is hitting a respectable .252 your team has to be doing pretty darn well.

           The rookie phenom that is Cody Bellinger has really helped this team. Since being called up when Adrian Gonzalez went down with an injury Bellinger has been red-hot. He is fourth in the majors in home runs to go along with 61 RBIs and is hitting at a .268 clip. Another player in the heart of that lineup is Justin Turner. Turner doesn’t have enough at-bats to qualify but if he did he would be leading the league in hitting. Batting .374 with 238 at-bats is nothing to shrug your shoulders at though. Corey Seager has avoided the sophomore slump and is still playing well after a stellar rookie campaign. Even Chris Taylor who has turned into their utility man has had a hot bat as of late.

           The scary part about this team though is their pitching. Kenley Jansen might be the filthiest reliever in the game right now. He has converted all 23 of his saves this season and has 61 strikeouts while pitching just 40 innings.

           At the top of the rotation is Clayton Kershaw and Alex Wood. Kershaw has been his usual dominant self. He leads the league in wins (14), is second in ERA (2.18) and third in strikeouts (159). Alex Wood might be the best #2 in all of baseball. He is 11-0 and would be leading in ERA (1.56) if he had enough innings pitched.

           The only question mark for this team is who they will be able to rely on after the top two starters. Brandon McCarthy, Rich Hill and Kenta Maeda have been solid while Hyun-Jin Ryu has been a bit of a disappointment. If they go after a #3 starter that might be the missing piece that puts them over the top.

           It wasn’t too long ago that the Astros lost over 100 games three consecutive seasons. Now they are 62-31 and own the AL’s best record. They are doing it because they have the most complete lineup in baseball.

           The Big 3, George Springer, Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa are perhaps the best 1-2-3 in baseball. All three are hitting over .300 and providing power, speed and nifty glove work. The rest of the lineup though with Josh Reddick, Yuri Gurriel, Carlos Beltran, Brian McCann, Evan Gattis, Alex Bregman, Jake Marisnick, Marwin Gonzalez and Nori Aoki have all been great. There are some nights that this team can get away with having Gonzalez on the bench which shows just how deep this team is.

           The bullpen has been really good especially at the backend with the likes of Chris Devenski and Ken Giles. Devenski has 77 strikeouts in just 56 innings and Giles has converted 20 of 22 saves.

           The one hiccup with this team is their starting rotation. Lance McCullers Jr. has been nothing but spectacular. He is 7-2 with a 2.38 ERA and looked good since coming back from his injury earlier in the year. Dallas Keuchel was looking like he was going to win another Cy Young before he got hurt. He was 9-0 with a 1.67 ERA.

           Brad Peacock was inserted into the rotation a few months ago and has done well with that opportunity. He is 7-1 with a 2.63 ERA in nine starts. The rest of the rotation (Mike Fiers, Charlie Morton, Joe Musgrove) have been pedestrian. David Paulino and Frances Martes were called up and started 10 games between the two but haven’t been consistent enough to hold down spots in the rotation. Come the trade deadline it is a must that the Astros find another pitcher if they want to reach the World Series because you don’t know if Peacock will continue to surge and you don’t know how Keuchel will pitch after this injury.

1. off the top of my head i would say that giles and thea were tight in college (she was surprisingly square but they ran in the same circles, idk). xander might have a thing for marigold lowkey because she's verbose and opinionated and this would Not Go Well For Him, or for willow, who would of course be fiercely jealous at even the concept of marigold paying attention to someone else (idek whats going on there man). evie and cordelia would strangely get along really really well and a lot of that has to do with mutual authenticity. buffy and roslin go get manicures together or smth

2. brie would absolutely get along with the entire bakery family really well bc she and marigold are the exact same kind of girl but the problem with this is that marigold's clinical need to be the most specialest girl in the room would kick in and have her out for blood. so yes brie would get along with roslin. for brie's safety she should not get along with roslin

3. elodie .... hm! she's fine and normal. definitely super well adjusted. she's getting such a good grade in trauma recovery and she wasn't even that traumatized anyway because nothing bad has ever happened TO her it just happened NEAR her. it's whatever. do not ask her about it

4. spike would kill lionel dead in seconds either with a well placed observation about every psychological issue that man has or just like. literally killing him. however thinking about this made me realize that i do actually believe lion and xander making out would genuinely fix them both but i do not fucking know how that could POSSIBLY happen

5/6. thea's proposed marriage to darla 17 times and darla is genuinely considering it mostly just to flip off her ex husband who's boring now. norie is obsessed with angel in the same kinda comphet crush way as she is obsessed with that serial killer she knows & angel is EXTREMELY uncomfortable with this. marigold and spike have something genuinely insane happening i think because spike is incredibly perceptive and marigold lies professionally about her feelings all the time, so she hates him on sight and he's like lol whatever i've got your number (which makes her hate him more). ros has an endless amount of patience for drusilla bc she's got a degree in Moderately Creepy Little Sister Who's Actually Soft At Heart so she WILL take tea and cakes w miss edith, for sure. sofie is not allowed near the vampires but keeps on trying to socialize w drusilla who is definitely interested in killing her lowkey (which is giving marigold a constant heart attack).

7. i do believe that the entire seeing red situation would shatter evie more than she's already been shattered and my girl does not need that psychologically which is why she is not IN the buffyverse!!! her vampires treat her right. she's the princess (the girls that get it get it)
