What is this?
This is a library of nonspeaking people writing, creative work, and how we share our experiences over time. The full library might be on a Google document, or merge with a toolkit others are making aim at parents of nonspeakers, or post on a separate website. I am still figuring it out! This Tumblr blog is a way for me to figure out a tag system so it is easier to sort by category. Each resource will be posted separately and tagged with all the things it could apply to. I will have a ‘table of contents’ that lists all the tags soon. And an author and subject index.
This is a living document. Things will be added to it as I read more from my kin and as we keep showing our words and selfhoods to the world. If you have ideas for links to add to this document, please message or send a ask! It may take a while because of my disabilities and time constraints but I will get it uploaded.
A few notes
1. Not everyone I include here would describe themselves as nonspeakers. Not everyone might fit the group most usually called nonspeakers. However it mostly includes writing by nonspeaking autistic people who use partner assisted methods to communicate. That is my own experience but I am trying to add people with a bigger range of disabilities. I am using the biggest and broadest definition of nonspeaking here. It includes other groups like: minimal and unreliable speaking people, people who can use speech sometimes but not always, people who identify as nonverbal instead of nonspeaking, nonspeaking people who are not autistic, and AAC users who do not call themselves nonspeaking. I am not saying all of these experiences are the same thing but I am seeking to put them all in conversation and arrange them in mosaic over time instead of staying siloed off.
2. Some of these links will be written by people who are not nonspeaking, but I still think people should read to understand our lives. I am centering our voices, so I will tag #speaking author and tag the the role they have in our lives (parent, professional, speaking or semispeaking disabled person, researcher, ect). In order to represent people whose best communication is not through words, I will sometimes include links by parents and others who know a nonspeaking person well, who talk about their communication in deep and respectful and curious ways, not by putting it as sad or lesser. If you have issues with a resource I post that is wrote by a speaking person, please let me know.
3. Please do not use my resources to argue about labels for different communication disabilities. Please do not use it to argue about what the people I post from call themselves, whether it is right or not. I will not be hosting any debates here.

ROTTMNT Fanfiction Library
All my fics are posted exclusively on Ao3! The site's guest-friendly so you don't need an account. Fair warning that I harbour TONS of favouritism towards Donnie, so most of my stories are about him. I'll organise them and include word counts and a short description!
Any and all warnings will be in the tags of the fics themselves. I haven't written anything too dark for Rise (yet), but everyone has varying levels of comfort and sensitivity. Put yourself first and read accordingly!
I personally use "Whump" to mean fics focused on physical injuries, and "Angst" to mean emotional/mental pain. All of my fics include comfort!
Feel free to hit up my asks for any questions! I love to yap about my fics.
~~~
Goldenwind Riseverse (In chronological order)
The main series, if you will! These fics are primarily canon-compliant, but include my own interpretations, expansions, and headcanons both grounded and not. They may reference each other, they may not, but they've all happened.
Also, Autistic Donnie is my favourite thing to tackle and write about. Expect LOTS of fics about or featuring his autistic experience and struggles, inspired by my own at times.
My ideas have expanded the more I write, so the 'older' fics might be missing some things (like tails), but are still canon to the Goldenverse.
Champion of the Water (4K, Turtle Tots, barely Donnie-centric but Leo POV, fun & games; a holding-your-breath contest reveals an interesting softshell 'power' of Donnie's)
A Turtle's Best Friend (9K, S1 Repo Mantis, Donnie-centric, angst-to-fluff; Donnie begrudgingly gets a doggo)
A Living Stone Against the Pavement (4.4K, S1 Purple Jacket, Donnie&April-centric, whump; Donnie gets hurt & April has to save him)
Paper Burns in the Third Degree (10K, S1 original, Mikey-centric, whump; the Mad Dogs have to escape a burning library after an explosion)
The Egg Pan (2.7K, S1 ambiguous, Disaster Twins-centric, humour, autistic VS normie; the twins fight over a pan with a predetermined purpose)
Staying Sane in the Mama Train (2.6k, S1 Insane in the Mama Train, Donnie-centric, angst, in losing his identity; Donnie must also give up his accommodations)
The Egg Pan Part 2 (2k, S2 ambiguous, Disaster Twins-centric, humour, autistic VS normie again; Donnie tries to die with honour over the pan with the predetermined purpose)
Stadium of a Hundred Needles (4.4k, Series ambiguous, Donnie-centric, angst/whump; Donnie battles sensory overload at a Yokai sports game)
System Glitch (I think I am) (8.5K, S2 original, Donnie-centric, 11pm musings; Donnie questions the probability of his disability and goes to Draxum for answers)
Existance of the Metaphorical 'Wrong Side' (6K, S2 ambiguous, Donnie-centric, angst/whump; Donnie does stupid things after waking up sad/stressed and Repo Mantis chooses to be a decent person about it)
The Hilarity of the Difficult Son (4.9K, S2/Post S2 Original, Splinter&Donnie-centric, two scenes; Donnie 'comes out' as autistic and Splinter doesn't like it at first, but is later forced to accept it)
~~~
A Butterfly with a Mechanical Wing AU
A miniature alternate universe where only one thing is different: Donnie is a nonspeaking autistic and communicates through alternate means. The purpose of this series is to explore a new type of normal and perhaps tackle some challenges a nonspeaker would face. Don't worry, he's treated mostly the same by his family, just with more accommodations. He also retains his wonderful personality.
Full disclaimer, I am a speaking autistic and do not wish to speak FOR anyone. This is mainly a creative/fun exercise to explore alternate means of communication (which fascinate me) and is not meant to reflect a true nonspeaking experience.
Series Link
A Cause to Celebrate (3.3K, Leo POV, fun & games, the boys throw April a party after a successful round of mid-terms)
The Poisonous Platter (3.4k, Raph POV, mission, the Mad Dogs have to stop another one of Meat Sweats' nefarious plans)
A Chameleon Effect (11k, rotating POV, humorus incident, the mad dogs eat chocolates that performs the ol' soul switcharoo)
Love Me Just the Same (4.4k, Donnie POV; Donnie fears that being nonspeaking will put him at odds with the newly freed founder of his clan)
I have plans for more stories in this AU, and look forward to writing and sharing them!
~~~
I hope you found something of interest! I hope to deliver many more fics as time goes on. My ADHD gives me endless ideas, but writing them is the true challenge.
Arrivederci, fellow nerds!
14 and 21 for the Pride OC asks? ^-^
Pride OC Asks!!!~
14. Do you have ocs on the aro or ace spectrum?
HOO BOY DO I. Most if not all of my characters will inevitably be aspec coded because I'm aroace, but here's a quick rundown of my canonically aspec characters:
Snow is partnering aroace, and sex repulsed and romance indifferent. She's in a QPR with her best friend Lan.
Lan is nonbinary/genderqueer and on both the aro and ace spectrums. They are sex and romance indifferent, and in a QPR with their best friend Snow.
Sapphire is demisexual. She fell in love with her bodyguard Raven after they'd known each other for a few years and made a strong emotional connection when they talked about their childhoods one night and bonded over their mothers (Sapphire's bio mom died when she was young and Raven's mom is alive and well and he loves her very much). Raven is bisexual.
Nickelle is aroace, and sex and romance indifferent. She's the team leader in my superhero wip, has ice powers, and is very protective of her friends and family.
Kylee is PanAce. She's nonspeaking autistic, has superspeed and invisibility powers, and is sex favorable. Due to her autism sexual intendeduo does tend to go over her head (like me lol), but she is far from innocent and can have a dirty mind if she knows the joke. She also uses She/They pronouns <3.
Chase is Pansexual Aromantic, and romance 'i just don't think about it much or care'. They haven't thought about having a sexual relationship much before due to his mental disabilities that are considered "scary" and dangerous" and how that would be hard on a partner (He has OCD and a bipolar mood disorder). He also has chronic anxiety and depression which affects his veiw on his relationships platonic and otherwise with people. He also uses He/They pronouns <3.
Corie is aroace, and romance indifferent and sex repulsed. She's a cyborg bounty hunter in Galaxy Destroyer, and is the only 'sane person' on a ship full of allosexuals.
I did go much more in depth with my Aro OCs for Aro Visiblity Day on June 5th in this post
21. Free ramble card wee
I wanna talk about Snow Knight, the second book in my FSF series.
I was a huge bookworm growing up, and blew through all the books in the school library up until high school (I still love books, I'm just a very slow reader now). I loved fantasy, but something always bugged me about how I could never seem to find a fantasy book- especially a fairytale- without romance.
I did like romance if it was between two well written characters and it made sense- but a part of me was still very pissed off that romance was always a must have in fantasy and the genre couldn't seem to exist without it. Every character had to be paired off at the end, even if it made no sense or the relationship wasn't very healthy.
Then I realized I was aroace. I started to see all the amanormativity in the world- especially mainstream fiction- and I became even more pissed off. I wanted a fantasy story where not only was there no romance- but the female main character was also interesting and had a compelling arc, while also being badass and doing awesome stuff like wielding a big sword and wearing cool armor. (I didn't have much access to indie stuff yet).
Unlike the other fairytale retellings in my FSF series, Snow White wasn't very realized when i dreamt up the project, and just a vague vibe in my mind. I knew I wanted to include a retelling among the other five- but the whole romance part felt not only felt unnecessary, but very wrong to me.
Then I decided, you know what? Screw society's stupid rules about romance, Snow White doesn't need any romance in her story. No man, no woman, no romantic partner at all. She should be allowed to have a close platonic relationship with her best friend without it needing to be anything else. She should be allowed to do cool and badass things that I see allo female mcs do all the time. The story can be just as interesting and awesome without a speck of romance to be found for Snow's character.
And just like that, Snow, her arc, her best friend Lan, and the story of Snow Knight was born. It's honestly been very cathartic as an aroace writer so far to write this story, and I can't wait to share it with the world.
Thanks @sternenmeerkind !
The Importance of Diversity, Access, Belonging, Inclusion, Equity, and Community in Gaming & The Library
Libraries strive for inclusivity and to create safe places for anyone in the community they serve to spend time and gather. A Gaming Librarian will be no different in their mission to provide an accepting community that everyone feels safe to attend and participate in. Gaming of all types has always had a problem with being an incredibly white male dominated space, and video games in particular have a major issue still with being extremely cishetnormative and exclusionary of queer and trans people, people of color, deaf/hard of hearing (HOH) people, and blind/low vision people. It is critical that a Gaming Librarian be conscious of including any and everyone who wants to come and play.
While the above listed issues very much do persist into the present day in video games, there have been some steps taken to create game modes that are accessible to more people. Subtitles for spoken dialogue in games is an absolute industry standard now, and while this is helpful, a vast majority of games do not include full accurate closed captioning and rely on audio cues to prompt the player to take specific actions during game play. Additionally, very few offer game modes where you can turn on visual prompts to replace that for deaf/HOH players. That said, there have been some small steps taken in some games to create dedicated modes for people with visual or hearing impairments (author can personally attest to seeing both of these features in the game Resident Evil 4 (2023), i. e. fully dedicated game modes for players with visual and/or hearing impairments).
Additionally, table top RPG's like Warhammer 40k would require a lot of work to be inclusive as well as they rely on the location of playing pieces on the table (which could present a challenge for blind/low vision players) and rely on verbal communication, which is difficult for nonspeaking people as well as deaf/HOH people.
As also mentioned above, gaming spaces (of all kinds) have always had an issue with being very exclusionary towards women and queer people as well as disabled people. It is extremely important that a gaming librarian be conscious of gender bias in games and curate their collection accordingly. Everything from board games to card games to video games should be considered carefully through the lens of diversity and inclusion.
(This question is mainly aimed at disabled people who get stared at and/or asked invasive questions when they’re out in public, but other people can answer if they feel like they have something to add.)
I'm an Early Childhood Education major and I'm kind of weirded out by how often our textbooks and classes teach us to teach children to ask disabled people questions about their bodies. They say it's better than staring or shouting out rude things, but...why are those presented as the only options?
But I don’t feel like I know enough to form an opinion about this, because my disabilities are not ones that most people notice by looking at me, so I don't know what it's like to deal with the reactions that more visibly disable people get.
However, I do have a large, very noticable birthmark on my face, and I've gotten a lot of questions about that for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid, even though I liked my birthmark, I found it very irritating how every new kid I met felt the need to ask about it. (Especially because I’m autistic, and answering questions takes up spoons.) As an adult, I hate when other adults ask me about it, and I usually ignore them until they stop asking. However, I don't mind at all when young children ask about it. That's because I know there's a lot they don't know yet -- what a birthmark is, what's polite or rude to say to strangers. I mean, they are being a little bit rude, but I still don't mind answering their questions and helping them learn something they didn’t know before. But...I don't know how I'd feel if there were books that encouraged children to approach people with birthmarks and ask about them. I don't think I'd like that.
But there are books like that about disabled people. There's this whole genre of picture books telling children if they see a disabled person in public, they should ask the person about their disability. The most popular one is Just Ask by Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Teachers love it, and it won the Caldecott Medal last year (one of the most prestigious awards a picture book can win). It also won the Schneider Family Award, which is an annual award given by the American Library Association to the “best” children’s book about disability.
Here’s a link to a read-aloud video of Just Ask if you want to check it out for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4sGcaA6bFk
(The uploader calls it “one of the most inclusive children’s picture books ever written”, which I guess is something that must seem true if you don’t keep up with children’s literature that much. Also, trigger warning for ableism about nonspeaking Autistic people. Sotomayor thanks Autism Speaks in the acknowledgements :/ Also, why does the girl with Down syndrome list “being included” as one of her hobbies? That’s a human right, not a hobby.)
Anyway, I recently came across these Crippled Scholar posts:
https://crippledscholar.com/2015/12/14/in-defense-of-the-radical-idea-of-letting-disabled-people-exist-in-public-without-comment/
https://crippledscholar.com/2015/05/28/dear-strangers-who-just-want-to-learn-about-disability-i-am-not-an-infobooth/
...and I’ve been thinking about them in the context of what preschool teachers and parents are being taught: that the proper way to interact with a disabled person you’ve never met is to walk up to them and ask questions about their disability.
And it made me wonder -- are there any disabled people who want this to be the norm? What do you want parents to do if their children are curious about your disability?
autism month april
april 12: social skills/communication. whats hard?
well, suppose the most obvious is i have been nonspeaking for maybe 10 months now. i dont consider this hard, but i think others ppl do.
what do i consider hard?: initiating. sharing. turn taking/entering convo. make friends. interaction with others ppl. asking help. express opinion. express need. express want. time. energy.
how does manifest:
initiating: there is a story from my childhood. family friend drives me home from sports event (maybe 3 hour trip). decides to make a social experiment: will not speak to me and waits for me to introduce a topic. result: 3 hours of silence. i am not able/inclined to initiate social interactions.
my father did used to make a story/analogy for me of how to have a conversation: it is two ppl carrying a log, and [he would try to explain to me] i am having to do my part to carry the other end of the log. it is funny that the given was that i must needs participate or am presumed able to.
sharing: this one is more nuanced? i think it ties into how easy i am to take advantage of [my mind: if they are asking to use my thing, there must be desperate need, and also a kind of reverse of that: i do not often think to attempt share my mind], and also into a kind of black/white yes/no mindset [boundaries are hard]. regarding social: i am mostly holding everything back and in. because there is not a: open the gates a little. is either on or off. having on leads to me getting hurt and overwhelmed. off is {easier?}safer, but leads to problems. i should like figuring this out better.
storytime: dangers and being taken advantage of, to illustrate: family vacation: i was put on plane alone to foreign country: travelling is fine, i usually just sleep the whole time. was supposed to meet sisters at other airport (starting travels in dif city] arrive, and many breakdowns: no sisters, no phone/communication with family, only address of where to end up. i get marked, shuffled off to moped self taxi. arrive after maybe hour. told to pay a couple hundred dollars [for taxi from airport). i do, but have to go to bank with this person. mostly end of it: my family says: you did WHAT?! {really just blamed me or took a laugh from it: again in my life no consideration of how i did end up in the situation or why}i could easily have been taken anywhere or told to do anything and i probly would have complied.
turn taking: again the conversation log: this has been an issue for forever. entering a conversation: i raise my hand and wait to be called on hahahahah. every situation. either that or i just have my responses in my head and watch the others.
make friends: none friends. had parent arranged friends growing up: physical group play, physical activities {like swim pool} closeness with sister: drifted some. tried being friends with roommates last year and ended disaster, with me losing my house hahaha.
asking help: best example is first time i crash/burn at college. went as long as i could manage (love learning and books). got to be too much (not the book work, but all other stuff). withdrew/isolation. fail classes through not participate. none questions, no help: i leave, they send away. didnt know what to ask for, and no one else thought to suggest anything was amiss. taylor trivia: is yale dropout hahah. splendid rare book library. i wanted to be a wizard hahahahha
aside: i am thinking this is a fundamental flaw or difference in how autism is recognized. there is a presentation that is inward focused. some ppl are having much brain processing power. ppl are singular. with this: sort of magic: deflections, illusions. ppl assume things. leads to problems. can hold together for a long time. cracks cracks breaks
ppl look for the ppl that act outwardly. or the inward ones who dont quite deflect in the right way. illusion: master
express myself: so difficult with words or to another person [saying this way, because i believe i do express/communicate, but differently]
i am slowly getting better at asking for help? im not sure this is true hahahh. i think my need has finally overtaken what i can withstand. i start recognize that i am needing and might be available help. ssi/ssdi, programs, etc. luckily i can do paperwork and waiting: what else is new, has been waiting decades. recognize: oh, maybe these are for ppl like me. or maybe i finally have some understanding gained
[edit: how could i forget the classic: eye contact: none. some ppl tell me to look at them. my father and a therapist come to mind. is a home video with me dad, and he has to prompt me: come here; look at me; stop bouncing around; talk to me. hahah :(:(:( sometimes i am thinking: it is so personal, it is too much. both ways. sometimes i watch mouths, often just looking away, processing, or waiting for the speaking to be finished hahahah]
[edit 2: the phone: hrm, i use the relay system now, so i think the change is that i have less anxiety about it. i still plan out what will be needed and said, start thinking about it the day before, but having the whole interaction typed is so much easier to me.]
a (VERY SPOILERY) list of things about Thick as Thieves by Megan Whalen Turner
C-C-C-C-C-COSTIS
alrigHT so when did you all realize “the Attolian” was Costis????
as soon as Kamet met him at the docks i was like “alright this is Costis isn’t it”
then Kamet’s like “he told me his name” and DIDNT ACTUALLY GIVE US THE NAME and i was like. alright. ccccoSTIS
of course he makes sure to emphasize how honest and guileless “the Attolian” is at every turn. ((((costis)))))
COSTIS GIVES ARISTOGITON’S NAME AS AN ALIAS IM SCREAMGIN
then Kamet calls him “the most eloquent nonspeaker” he's ever met (((COSTIS!!!)))
NO OFFENSE BUT i love costis ormentides more than my own life
THIS BOOK DOES HIM SO GOOOOOOD. you finally get to see what Costis looks like from an outside POV. in KOA we experience Costis’s own perspective & frustration & humiliation at being constantly manipulated and played like a fiddle, but in Thick as Thieves he’s the fricken star and we get to see him competent and fearless and good. i’m in awe.
i love the care and dignity the minor (even offscreen) characters were treated with in this book. Laela and Nahuseresh's other slaves. the runaway slaves. the family whose pots Costis re-tinned.
costis re-tinned peoples pots
Kamet is a completely different person by the end of the book than he is at the end. at the beginning he's lying to himself about being content and well-off in his gilded cage, and at the end he's real
"the Attolian, who was now clearly revealed as a madman,"
Costis is literally like a one-man Delta Force
fights lions
defeats elite Mede warriors even while outnumbered
snaps necks with his bare hands
casually outfoxes a gambling den full of miscreants
treats wounds
basically carries a swooning Kamet across the entire Mede Empire in a bridal carry
what a guy
i love how Costis recognizes Immakuk and Ennikar. because of course running into the gods on a street corner is something you do when you hang with Eugenides
remember when Costis got his fortune told by a priest? has anyone figured out what "Remember Immakuk. Pay the fastener," means? because i gotta admit i'm lost
eugenides. what a magnificent piece of work. i love how Eugenides is the reason Kamet hates Attolia
"any idiot could do it" im howling. not all of us live in a library, Gen. he probably said it just to see Kamet's face
ok how many of you called that he was the errand-boy from the beginning? because i was not among you
i thought "who in heck is this errand boy? he's clearly nobody normal because Costis is finding all kinds of things wrong with his story"
but did i suspect Eugenides? no. no, i did not. because i am a fool
so................ the kitchen staff were putting sand in Eugenides's food because......... he had worked there undercover as an errand boy before QOA. this...... is fine
"What a piece of work he was. I don't know why I like him as much as I do." i'm going to remember this quote forever as the perfect encapsulation of Eugenides
personally i don't think i like "First Person Compulsory Field Trip to Attolia" books as much as i like "Third Person All Eugenides All The Time" books. but lbr i would still die for Thick as Thieves
THE. BABY.
also, before i leave the subject: "the king's health was also poor." what the FRIC does THIS MEAN!??!
!!!!!!!!!???????!!!!!!!?
I DONT KNOW WHAT IT MEANS BUT I'M SCARED AND READY TO FIGHT ANYONE
did i mention CCCCOSTIS
honestly i wish that the part after they arrived in Attolia could have been 5 times longer than it was and had 100x more Costis than it did.
WE DIDNT EVEN GET TO SEE COSTIS AND EUGENIDES INTERACT?
call the police i've been robbed
i like how Kamet realized that he was wrong about Eugenides literally the moment he walked into the room even though he can barely see and Eugenides hadnt even done anything yet
Kamet e dai Annux
time to wait another 7 years to find out whats up with Sophos and Eddis
#queen's thief#thick as thieves#grace for ts#lists of things with grace#WHOOOOOOOOOS STILL FLIPPING OUT ABOUT THIS BOOK HINT ITS ME#this entire thing is all spoilers watch out folks#YYYELLLS#ヽ(°〇°)ノ
Gallaudet’s Vision Advances Deaf Education
By Emily E. Gifford
Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a Congregationalist minister, is acclaimed today for his role in pioneering education for the deaf in the United States and establishing the American School for the Deaf in Connecticut. Born in Philadelphia in 1787, Gallaudet was the oldest of eight children. His parents, Peter Wallace Gallaudet and Jane Hopkins Gallaudet (a descendant of early colonial settler Thomas Hooker), relocated to Hartford, Jane’s birthplace, in 1800. He attended the Hartford Grammar School, earned a bachelor’s degree at Yale College in 1805, and completed is master’s degree there as well.
Traveling Minister Finds a New Mission
After graduating with a distinguished record, Gallaudet tried his hand at law, working for a prominent firm in Hartford, but poor health forced him to resign. He then earned a degree in divinity from Andover Theological Seminary (now Andover Newton Theological School) in Massachusetts, but his continued health problems prevented him from taking a permanent position as a pastor. Instead, he became a traveling minister, visiting communities throughout the Northeast as his health permitted. He also taught basic education in religion and American history to children in towns that did not have appointed schoolteachers.
Daniel Chester French, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Alice Cogswell, 1888 (cast 1924), bronze, West Hartford – Hartford History Center, Hartford Public Library
While visiting his family in Hartford, Gallaudet became acquainted with Alice Cogswell, a deaf-nonspeaking nine-year-old. He taught her to write basic words by pointing to objects and using a stick to draw letters in the dirt. Her father, physician Mason Cogswell, encouraged Gallaudet’s education of his daughter and made his extensive library available to him. Gallaudet also began to read about European experiments in which educators were attempting to develop a system of signs and signals that would enable the deaf and mute to communicate. Eventually, Cogswell asked Gallaudet to travel to Europe to study these schools for the deaf.
A French Connection
Gallaudet first tried to visit the Braidwood schools for the deaf in England and Scotland, but the Braidwood family had no interest in helping a potential competitor for students learn their methods. During that trip, however, Gallaudet met a French Catholic priest, Abbot Roch-Ambroise Cucurron Sicard, head of the Royal Institution for Deaf-Mutes in Paris. At Abbot Sicard’s invitation, Gallaudet journeyed to France and studied with the school’s faculty. His tutors included Laurent Clerc, a deaf priest who was among those working on a manual communications system, an early version of sign language.
Father Clerc joined Gallaudet on his return to the United States, and the two traveled throughout New England, tutoring the deaf and raising funds for a school. Cogswell and his friends also helped raise the money needed to open the American Asylum for Deaf-Mutes (the school’s name in its incorporation papers, filed in 1816). Located in Bennett’s City Hotel on Prospect Street in Hartford, the school officially opened on April 15, 1817, as The Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons. The first class included Alice Cogswell.
The American School for the Deaf
Gallaudet, the school’s first principal, liked neither the name nor the location of the school. Fortunately, a grant from the United States Congress enabled the school to move to a three-acre campus in West Hartford, and the school’s board renamed it the American School for the Deaf. Gallaudet’s personal life also flourished. In 1821, he married Sophia Fowler, a deaf graduate of the school who was originally from Guilford. They had eight children, including Edward Miner Gallaudet, who would go on to found the school in Washington, DC, now called Gallaudet University.
An advertisement from the Connecticut Courant for the Asylum for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb, September 8, 1829
Thomas Gallaudet resigned as principal of the American School for the Deaf in 1831, after many conflicts with the school’s board of directors over such matters as an increase to his salary (he was paid less than some of the school’s teachers) and expansion of the school’s resources. Gallaudet served as chaplain to both Hartford’s city jail and the Hartford Retreat for the Insane before his health deteriorated, leaving him bedridden for the last year of his life. Gallaudet died in 1851 and was buried in Hartford’s Cedar Hill Cemetery.
The work of the American School for the Deaf continues today. Situated on more than 50 acres, this residential campus offers a range of educational programming for deaf and hearing-impaired students ages 3-21.
Okay this is on here now!
What is this?
This is a library of nonspeaking people writing, creative work, and how we share our experiences over time. The full library might be on a Google document, or merge with a toolkit others are making aim at parents of nonspeakers, or post on a separate website. I am still figuring it out! This Tumblr blog is a way for me to figure out a tag system so it is easier to sort by category. Each resource will be posted separately and tagged with all the things it could apply to. I will have a ‘table of contents’ that lists all the tags soon.
This is a living document. Things will be added to it as I read more from my kin and as we keep showing our words and selfhoods to the world. If you have ideas for links to add to this document, please message or send a ask! It may take a while because of my disabilities and time constraints but I will get it uploaded.
A few notes
1. Not everyone I include here would describe themselves as nonspeakers. Not everyone might fit the group most usually called nonspeakers. However it mostly includes writing by nonspeaking autistic people who use partner assisted methods to communicate. That is my own experience but I am trying to add people with a bigger range of disabilities. I am using the biggest and broadest definition of nonspeaking here. It includes other groups like: minimal and unreliable speaking people, people who can use speech sometimes but not always, people who identify as nonverbal instead of nonspeaking, nonspeaking people who are not autistic, and AAC users who do not call themselves nonspeaking. I am not saying all of these experiences are the same thing but I am seeking to put them all in conversation and arrange them in mosaic over time instead of staying siloed off.
2. Some of these links will be written by people who are not nonspeaking, but I still think people should read to understand our lives. I am centering our voices, so I will tag #speaking author and tag the the role they have in our lives (parent, professional, speaking or semispeaking disabled person, researcher, ect). In order to represent people whose best communication is not through words, I will sometimes include links by parents and others who know a nonspeaking person well, who talk about their communication in deep and respectful and curious ways, not by putting it as sad or lesser. If you have issues with a resource I post that is wrote by a speaking person, please let me know.
3. Please do not use my resources to argue about labels for different communication disabilities. Please do not use it to argue about what the people I post from call themselves, whether it is right or not. I will not be hosting any debates here.
