We’re casting trand and/or non-binary actors for the short film Controlling the Narrative. 

We need actors age 14-25 who identify as non-cisgender. No professional experience required. 

Pay is SAG scale (approx $211/day) for 3-6 days of work between Mon 8/22-Sat 8/27 in Portland, OR. Must be US based to apply, tavel/lodging will be provide as needed. SAG-AFTRA, non-union talent are welcome to submit. Must disclose your talent agency if applicable.

I meant to post this so much earlier, but I’ve still got a little bit of #transdayofvisibility left! This is the most important TDOV for me since coming out in college: tomorrow begins the final weekend of the West Coast premiere of Things I Know To Be True, which has been my first opportunity to play an openly trans character (spoiler alert!) and deal directly with a storyline about being trans. And the feedback I’ve been getting from audience members with close trans friends or family members has been overwhelmingly, gloriously impactful. I am so proud to tell this story, and through the run my only hope is that I did it justice. I believe I am the first AFAB actor to be cast in the role of Mark/Mia, but I’m not the first trans actor - that honor goes to @kevin_kantor, who was absolutely instrumental in bringing the truth of trans lives to the US rewrite of the original script. Thank you, Kevin; I am proud to follow in your footsteps. This backstage picture represents a highly vulnerable point in the show for me - my character has just come out, and is now navigating the process of stepping out of one world and into another, and I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out how to show that with my physical mannerisms, grooming choices, and speech patterns. This role has been so dynamic, such a wonderful challenge to figure out and put together, and has taught me so much about how to use my skills to portray a quickly-evolving person. TIKTBT is one of the only plays I’ve ever read that directly features a trans story, and maybe the only one where the character isn’t dehumanized through oversexualization. She’s just a person trying to make her way through life. We need more stories about the trans people in our lives. We’re just people, trying to live our truth, in as diverse a number of ways as anyone else. I believe in our women empowering women challenge. This challenge also came around the time that the Emmy nominations were announced and I'm in a basket of feels right now. 💜 Being queer, mexican and pakistani has placed me in a lifetime role of checking to see if whatever group I'm in is being inclusive...some see it as a cool superpower, but sometimes it bites me in the nalgas. 🍑 Like when I was younger and part of a Mexican student group, we had access to free phone privileges while other Latinx groups didn't, among other things, I spoke out and got bit hard, not just hard...HAURD in tha BOOTAY. It was tough but it was the right thing to do and I did it even after getting hate mail for being a half-Mexicana leading a Mexican student group. lawd-jezus. 💜 Whenever any kind of award nominations come out, I'm like ummmm, yo checkit so if folks like @ser_anzoategui from @tanyasaracho @vida_starz gets a nomination where do they go? real talk! and why wait till non-binary folks get nominated? Why not create the space now? We are waiting forrrrrr...whut. 💜 To my actor friends here, do we feel comfortable accepting an award in a platform that hasn't created space for everyone? including non-binary folks? When your 2 min video assignment for a class can be anything you want, why not go for a dream role? Except not actually Dream. That's the younger brother. I don't know how I stumbled upon The Sandman, but I remember being in high school and just discovering the freedom of being able to explore nerdy and fantastic things without (much) restraint. I remember reading the chapter with Death talking to Dream at the park and thinking to myself "this lady is drawn with some East Asian features. She could be me.". I've held on to that ever since, especially with how much I've fallen in love with her character every time she came up in the comics. One day, maybe.
