I love libraries.
I'm browsing the WWI shelves (as you do) and notice a very old book about the war. I glance at the first pages that talk about how one day the war will be over and we'll look at this place and not see any signs of the battlefield.
Then it hits me. And I check the publishing date.
This book was printed before the war's end. Not written. Printed. The physical object was created in 1918, while the war in question was raging and the end was as yet uncertain.
Now I'm standing on the other side of the apocalypse, with this physical link to that era in my hands. I'm living proof that the war did end and life did go on and we can all look at the end of the world as a long-ago memory.
Reading old books is cool enough, connecting our minds and hearts through the ideas of people who lived long ago, but there's something extra profound about holding a copy of the book that comes from the time that it was written. It's a physical link between the past and the present connecting me to those long-ago people. A piece of the past come into the future that gives me the chance to almost take the hand of some long-ago reader, to hold something they could have held, connecting not just mentally but physically to their era, a moment of connection across more than a century.
Excuse me while I go weep.

Yesterday, in NYC, a man lit a woman, who was sleeping in a subway car, on fire until she died. So the man arrested will be charged with terrorism as well as murder, correct? His attack was also threatening the lives of other homeless people (which it is assumed she was so). Surely he will also be charged with terrorism for scaring those people, right?
Or is it only terrorism when rich people are threatened?
Also, surely the fact the person who did this being an undocumented immigrant won’t be mentioned in every single news article about it, right? A woman was brutally murdered. Who gives a shit where the perpetrator is from, all we should care is that he is detained and punished.
Right?
We all agreed to this, right?
Or does race and immigration status only matter when a non-white and or undocumented immigrant commits a crime?
Same place, same police.
And I think we all know how differently this murder will be treated. And why.
#as far as I can tell she hasn’t been identified yet and it seems she was homeless#SHE WAS ASLEEP!#you could not have gotten more non threatening than what she was doing#it pisses me off that the media isn’t covering blake livelys lawsuit and horrific allegations but were so fast to capitalize on Johnny#depps lawsuit#it pisses me off this woman’s death will be nothing more than a small news article where it’s possible her name may never even be found#but both luigi and Thompson will have every single aspect of their live transcribed and memorialize fucking pisses me off#the fact that Thompsons murder will be portrayed as outrageous while this woman’s murder#a woman BURNT ALIVE#one of the most painful ways to die#will be forgetton#even if she is identified#there won’t be her picture everywhere hashtags about her journalists painstakingly documenting everything#the obvious hypocrisy in this murder compared to Luigi’s murder is obvious and painful#I know it holds so much symbolic value fuck American healthcare I am completely on board 100% agree#but I think people are so hypocritical criticizing police for only working so hard on a murder when it’s a rich guy (true) while the masses#including me#are obsessed with a case about two rich white men#I’m not at all saying what luigi did shouldn’t be praised and focused on and talked about not at all#but just as a current events and true crime girlie (derogatory) it just always bothers me that cases that go big involve rich white people#almost always#this post was meant to be purely criticizing how authorities are handling this case but ig also a slight condemnation for making this#attention so rare#does thins make sense#rae’s rambles#luigi mangione#current events

'I flirted with the idea that instead of being trans that I was just a cross-dresser (a quirk, I thought, that could be quietly folded into an otherwise average life) and that my dysphoria was sexual in nature, and sexual only. And if my feelings were only sexual, then, I wondered, perhaps I wasn’t actually trans.
I had read about a book called The Man Who Would Be Queen, by a Northwestern University professor who believed that transwomen who were attracted to women were really confused fetishists, they wanted to be women to satisfy an autogynephilia. And though I first read about this book in the context of its debunkment and disparagement, I thought about the electricity of slipping on those tights, zipping up those boots, and a stream of guilt followed. Maybe this professor was right, and maybe I was only a fetishist. Not trans, just a misguided boy.
About a year later, on the Internet, I come across a transwoman who added a unique message to the crowd refuting this professor. Oh, I wish I remember who this woman was, and I wish even more that I could do better than paraphrase her, but I remember her saying something like this: “Well, of course I feel sexy putting on women’s clothing and having a woman’s body. If you feel comfortable in your body for the first time, won’t that probably mean it’ll be the first time you feel comfortable, too, with delighting in your body as a sexual thing?”'
-Casey Plett, Consciousness
#this quote always moves me almost to tears when i remember it#i'm not a trans woman and i don't share the author's specific experiences with transition#but it really moves me that she frame transition as joyfully giving yourself permission to approach your body#not as something that has to be disciplined and deprived and made small in all these various ways#but as a means for experiencing pleasure and joy and delight and for insisting that our feelings and desires are worth#valuing and exploring and treasuring#i always used to think of prioritizing those things for myself as selfish and irresponsible#but who does it harm to want to experience pleasure in your own body?#it's such a beautifully simple and powerful switch to have flip in your head#and equally why are we forced to deny our own pleasure in transition and anything else related to our bodies in the name of moral rectitude#this is why i get so confused and pissed off when other trans people are fatphobic for example#like why are you so invested in politics of shame and disgust that never had any purpose other than#violently disciplining people as if they've violated moral codes by existing in a body#to say nothing of white people being racist in gay and trans communities#like again this system of violence is foundational to homophobia and transphobia#so why are you acting like it has nothing to do with you#even if you are unmoved by the urgency of other people's suffering which btw you should be moved by#what do you hope to gain by acting a collaborator and handmaiden to those systems#Casey Plett#she really is one of my favorite authors i wish more non-canadians read her#this quote is from a series of columns she did ont transition and every single one is a banger#i love when she talks about the people-pleasing elements of dysphoria and transition denial#she's so sharp about noting how many of us deny our own dysphoria on the grounds that others like and validate our bodies#that's how i always felt during my cis conventionally feminine era#it pleased other people so much and also that reception felt so hollow and joyless to me because i hated it#i get less of that positive feedback but that feels so unimportant next to the joy and pleasure i get to experience#said with the understanding that i'm very privileged in being able to prioritize those things without fear. but it was a switch flip#personal nonsense

I kind of sort atla episodes into "liberal fuckery" "neutral" and "decisively NOT liberal" and I feel like its kinda slept on how the Wan Shi Tong episode fits into that last category....

i know i’m always bitching about gaps in the collection at my job and my weird patrons but LISTEN my six the musical readalikes is doing surprisingly well (i shouldn't be surprised, library patrons in general love historical fiction especially bad historical fiction lmao) so i was looking to refill it and i wanted some more ~diverse titles and we have one (1) book about black royals in fiction and as far as i can tell like....absolutely fuck all on asian royals? which reminded me about how grrm has bitched at several points about how there's not a lot of good historical fiction on moorish spain or the maghreb in medieval era, and that's what he likes to read above all else - not a historical tome but history as a story, history written from the point of view of someone interesting.
this post has no point beyond me and george both agreeing there is a HEINOUS, near CRIMINAL lack of popular historical fiction about anywhere outside of europe. someone get on this so that old man can get more excited about world building in dorne pls!!!!

Atsushi's back in the game!!! ۶( ˆ o ˆ )
#And Kouyou!!!!#Also. I can say Steinbeck is kinda 👀👀👀#King of the specific category of “I forget I like him until he's on screen”#I'm seriously unlocking memories with this rewatch. Like I haven't thought about it in two years–#but I just know when I was watching the anime for the first time I was being like#“Of COURSE the villains need to spend several minutes each episode explaining in detail how their own superpowers work so that the–#protagonists can get a perfect idea of how to best counter them. Why are villains made so freaking stupid in this show” aljhvwslchvqliyqwb#But. Eh. I guess that's just bsd to you.#Alsoooooo random thought of the day: I don't really favour how Tanizaki's ability was adapted in the anime.#I very well understand they were going for this green Matrix-like illusion effect‚ but every time someone says “... Snow?”#I'm like please explain where do you live that has snow glowing green.#Aamsjgvfaskjhfv sorry this is me being very. Cranky and nitpicky and having terrible audience etiquette in refusing to–#engage in suspension of disbelief. It just bugs me akvakcvqkyb I just feel like... Green is such a non-snow color–#that quite of completely disrupts the Light Snow / Sasame Yuki aesthetic. I would have liked it much better light blue or simply white.#What else. The way the Guild just goes on at stereotypes still troubles me a lot. The “usamericans can't be touched by laws–#because they use money to corrupt anyone” “foreign criminal organization come in our country to corrupt our pure and untouched soil”#Idk. Maybe all of it is true. Can it still be deemed a stereotype when it's objectively something that's happened before–#and will probably keep happening?#I suppose I'm just not a fan of the constant hostility against any foreigner. Idk.#This situation besides is extremely ironical. If you meet me irl it probably won't take long to see me being very outspoken about–#how much I despise usa cultural colonization of all other countries. It's something that really bothers me‚ how rooted and pervasive–#their influence is. So in a lot of ways I can relate to the author's sentiment#I just feel that. If you start treating them as stereotypes and ignore the complexity of a country and the wide spectrum of causes–#that contribute to its attitude in international relations. You end up practicing precisely what you're trying to criticize.#Okay this is the last time I'm getting into the politics of the Guild arc lol#random rambles#This time I took watching the episode slow I feel a little late

Showcase Sunday
OK So: I'm gonna do a couple: One is a fanfic that stuck with me even though I don't venture into A03 as much as maybe I should (especially since I don't feel like I get to take in as much media as I used to outside of books):
I love me a good polyship and these three in particular are a fun one, and also: -BABA YAGA.
... Also the chickens.
You'll understand when you read it.
Baba (201543 words) by Crownofpins Chapters: 32/32 Fandom: Castlevania (Cartoon), Castlevania, 悪魔城ドラキュラ | Castlevania Series, Castlevania (TV) Rating: Explicit Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence Relationships: Alucard/Trevor Belmont, Trevor Belmont/Sypha Belnades, Alucard/Trevor Belmont/Sypha Belnades, Sypha Belnades/Alucard Characters: Alucard (Castlevania), Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades Additional Tags: Friendship, Pre-OT3, OT3, magic is menacing, men darning socks, Domestic, sinister toilets, Fairy Tale Elements, drinking alone in the dark never ends well, trevor no longer likes horses, mention of sexual assault, trevor is the pure one, consensual drunken wriggling Series: Part 2 of Baba Summary: Deep in the wilds, mysterious things wander through the lands on mysterious trails. Dracula isn't the only legend that walks their earth. In stumbling across an abandoned village that seems too good to be true, Trevor stumbles across himself, too. Lucky for him and the lives of the countrymen riding on his success, Alucard and Sypha are there to pick him up.
ALSO for books:
LEGENDBORN: Definitely references racism and stuff which is... part of the story? But also is just a really really good book (I need to finish the series) with -lush- language.

Dimples, Chapter Eight
Epilogue
One Year Later
Freddy repeats his daily ritual.
It’s a beautiful, mild day. A little cloud cover, sun regularly peaking out to say hi. Warm breeze. He cycles to the usual, sleepy convenience store. His stomping grounds are quiet, local, away from the highly touristy areas. These parts of the islands aren’t as well-cared for, as anyone who lives in a travel-destination or big city or coastal town etc. will attest to. The local government only cares about the pretty parts. It’s hard to believe that that is the case here, too, because all of Hawaii is gorgeous. Areas like this are where most of the locals live, as well.
Freddy and Larry initially kept their heads down. Found an inexpensive rental, made payments on time, didn’t wreck the property. It was a low bar to meet, but in keeping their noses clean, they make it. They buy local groceries, eat better and healthier than ever, even left smoking for once a week. Drinking is cut down, only one beverage a night. There’s so little stress in their lives, they don’t need such distractions.
Freddy’s daily trips to the store are two-fold; grab something they’ve run out of, which is occasional, to grabbing that morning’s paper, somewhat for himself, mostly to leave with having purchased something. The more the locals see them, and associate them with good, frequent business, and a smile or two, the better.
He smiles at the clerk, whose name he doesn’t know, and the clerk doesn’t know Freddy’s, which is same-old, same-old. He says a bright and cheery hello to an older woman, whose car Larry fixed up, last week. She asks what kind of cookies the man likes, intentions clear. Freddy says oatmeal, and she’s beaming.
He grabs the paper, money ready. “Keep the change.” On his bike, heading home.
Larry’s making breakfast burritos when Freddy walks in. The tortillas are warming over the griddle, veggies cooked and set aside, scrambled eggs nearly done. “Anything new?” he asks.
Freddy gives him a quick peck on the cheek. “About to look, myself.”
Larry turns his head for a proper kiss. Freddy grins, obliging.
Freddy sits down at their little kitchen table, opens the paper, goes right for the classifieds. He scans the page carefully. It’s been months since the last message, which was not unusual. There was no set schedule, so he just needed to keep a close eye on things. He spots it, towards the bottom right of the paper.
“Got ‘im.” he reads, “‘Violet sends regards to Creamsicle. All is well. Be in touch, soon.’”
Larry chuckles, setting the pan aside, “Where the hell does he come up with stuff like that?”
“No clue, Mr. Banner.”
Larry is leaning over, looking at the message for himself, “You think he’s coming to visit?”
“Who knows. It’s not like we have to do much to tidy up, around here.” Freddy says, referring to their distinct lack of personal belongings. It wasn’t unusual for people to move from the mainland with so little; it was lighter, cheaper, and you normally made a good chunk of change selling off your stuff, all going towards the move. Freddy looks up, “Don’t you want him to come over?”
Larry considers, “I’ll tolerate him.” he smirks, leans over and kisses Freddy’s forehead.
THE END

retconning stroud out of the deep roads so i can shove laure amell and the hawke siblings and varric and anders all into the same little camp. they would all have such a bad time
#carver: dying of blight. with an inferiority complex. but mostly dying#danie: MY BROTHER!!! MY BABY BROTJER HELP HIM!!!!!#anders: oh god oh fuck. wait a minute. i recognize this area. isnt this where the commander should be? oh hell#varric: we are all going to 🪦die⚰️ in a 🕳 hole. not even a GOOD hole#warden commander laure amell of ferelden and amaranthine: oh. anders. glad you're not dead or a darkspawn but Why The Fuck Are You Here#anders: oh hell. uh.#warden commander laure amell of ferelden and amaranthine: actually shut up. darkspawn incoming. its too open here so follow me to camp#'uh- commander-' 'shut it. there are shrieks about. this is a nasty area to be in with non-wardens' [glaring disapprovingly]#they awkwardly walk to camp. sigrun and a couple other wardens are there. they all sit down & drop their stuff#amell sits on a stump and pulls out a corked bottle. pops the cork. sniffs it. takes a swig. her white hair almost seems to glow?#she coughs then asks anders 'so why *are* you this far in the deep roads with a band of nonwardens? how'd you even get here?'#anders pulls out the map and hands it over. she looks at it. her expression darkens. she rolls up the map and says 'Anders.' he looks up.#she whaps him on the head with the map and gripes 'do you have ANY idea how long I spent looking for these fucking maps?!' whap 'you dick!'#she whaps him one more time then stuffs the maps into her bag. 'that still doesn't tell me WHY you're here. out with it.'#varric speaks up: 'my asshole brother locked us in a thaig. we came down on an expedition and found an idol that he betrayed us for'#amell frowns. 'a *thaig*? there aren't any records in the shaperate of any out this far. this isn't even a main branch of the deep roads.'#'it could be ancient!' sigrun offers 'or an unsavory secret the shaperate 'lost'. like Caridin?' amell nods & turns back to varric.#'so you're looking for a way out.' they nod. 'and just happened to come by this way?' anders says 'no commander- we need your help.'#amell takes another swig of her bottle. her hair is definitely glowing slightly. 'who *doesn't* these days. but for a pair of old friends-'#she winks at anders. 'what is it you need?' danie interrupts. '-please- my brother is sick- if you can't help him he'll die!'#amell looks at hawke then at carver. gets up and steps over to him. kneels in front of him and unceremoniously grabs his face#tilts his chin up (carotid + jugular blackened) peels his eyelid back (sclera greying and bloodshot) pries open his mouth (tongue greying)#then releases his head and stands shaking her hands. 'oh yeah. that's blight for sure. this is why you sought me out?' anders nods.#'we'll take him. but you know- he may not survive the joining.' 'any chance is better than letting him die!' 'i agree.' amell says coolly.#'youre lucky. we can do it here but the prep will take time. rest. eat. be on your guard. and DO NOT touch my whiskey if you're not a mage.'#it takes like a day of prep. also no one has used amell's name so they havent figured out the Cousins thing yet#eventually amell pulls carver over to the fire and hands him a cup of the joining potion and says 'you get one warning. *don't flinch.*'#he drinks it. he lives. but he's unconscious. amell sends the party on their way#to anders: here. i found this not long after you left. *hands him the phylactery* you and justice be careful. it's getting chaotic out there#to hawke: for what it's worth im sorry. if ever you need the wardens' assistance i grant it under the authority of warden-commander amell
