Eyeliner: A Cultural History
Zahra Hankir
From the distant past to the present, with fingers and felt-tipped pens, metallic powders and gel pots, humans have been drawn to lining their eyes. The aesthetic trademark of figures ranging from Nefertiti to Amy Winehouse, eyeliner is one of our most enduring cosmetic tools; ancient royals and Gen Z beauty influencers alike would attest to its uniquely transformative power. It is undeniably fun--yet it is also far from frivolous. Seen through Zahra Hankir's (kohl-lined) eyes, this ubiquitous but seldom-examined product becomes a portal to history, proof both of the stunning variety among cultures across time and space and of our shared humanity. Through intimate reporting and conversations--with nomads in Chad, geishas in Japan, dancers in India, drag queens in New York, and more--Eyeliner embraces the rich history and significance of its namesake, especially among communities of color. What emerges is an unexpectedly moving portrait of a tool that, in various corners of the globe, can signal religious devotion, attract potential partners, ward off evil forces, shield eyes from the sun, transform faces into fantasies, and communicate volumes without saying a word. Delightful, surprising, and utterly absorbing, Eyeliner is a fascinating tour through streets, stages, and bedrooms around the world, and a thought-provoking reclamation of a key piece of our collective history.

Sunagakure Worldbuilding Headcanon
My last post on Kirigakure made me think of some Sunagakure Headcanons. Here they are! This is very long, but I hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
People and Culture
The wind realm’s population is rather decentralized, so there are a lot of subcultures, accents and customs that have developed over time. The people of Sunagakure are very intelligent and hard workers and don’t take shit from anyone. They value their independence but also recognize the use of unionizing to achieve their goals. They use rather few words to communicate amongst each other in public, but in private they can be very poetic. Also, they secretly don’t mind the stereotype of tumbleweeds rolling around everywhere in the village, because they can relate. To outsiders, they seem secretive and mysterious, but they are in reality very friendly and hospitable. Once you make a friend in Suna, you’ve made a friend for life. Gift giving, especially in the form of food or other self-made goods is always appreciated. Suna citizens are hopeless romantics, and most soap operas and sappy romance books are produced there. They love to make music and sing together. Most instruments originate from the wind realm and its citizens proudly call themselves the creators of all music in the shinobi world. The wind realm is the country with the richest culture in the shinobi world.
Politics
Recently, Suna has been plagued by an economic crisis, as the wind realm daimyo has preferably hired Konoha shinobi to get missions done. This has raised the distrust in the wind realm government and made the people more loyal to the kazekage than the daimyo. The shinobi have started to prioritize the mission over the lives of the shinobi fulfilling it, however they make sure to give their teammates a quick and painless death if they get into that situation.
Clothing and Cosmetics
Most Suna Shinobi wear long sleeves and cover their head, to protect their skin from sun damage. It’s also very common to cover your face in layers of fabric, as the Suna sandstorms can be ruthless. Light brown, grey, white and black are the most popular colors, as they allow you to blend in with your surroundings and not get detected by enemy shinobi. All people, including kuniochis, keep their hair rather short, cover it or tie them together in some kind of way. There are a lot of unique hairstyles to deal with the strong winds, as can be seen by Temari, who wears four ponytails because the winds would otherwise just destroy her hairstyle if she wore just two. For festive occasions though, Suna clothes are vibrant and colorful, with very intricate details. The most preferred fabric choices are silk and cotton. Before the recession, Suna also had a booming beauty industry, with the best moisturizers, sunblock and body wash originating from there. There is an ongoing feud between the wind realm and the water realm about who has the better skincare products. Wind realm citizens are known to always smell good and take great care of themselves. They use bidets and shower frequently. The women are rumored to be the most beautiful in the shinobi world, however many of them have to deal with orientalism and exoticism from foreigners.
Tumblr media
Nature
Flora
A fact that a lot of foreigners get wrong is that Sunagakure is covered completely in desert wasteland. Quite a bit of vegetation is savannah and what we call mediterranean. Still a rather hot country, it is characterized by agonizingly hot summers and barely existing winters. The actual deserts of the wind realm are sprinkled with oases, around which many settlements have formed. The terrain around those oases is very fertile and most of the country’s produce is grown there. Sandstorms are not a rarity here and during these storms there are self-imposed curfews as Suna citizens know that once you get buried in a sandstorm, there is no way anyone will find you buried under all that sand. Only a few nomadic families actually travel and live outside of the oases.
Fauna
The deserts that surround Suna are filled to the brim with the most dangerous, savage animals known to the shinobi realm. The snakes especially must not be underestimated, as their venom can kill a grown shinobi within minutes. Many marionette wielders therefore use it against their enemies. The rivers of the wind realm are full of crocodiles and freshwater fish. The fennec fox is seen as a symbol of good luck and suna nin believe their mission will be a success when they see one. Aside from other cats of prey like lions, cheetahs and leopards. Other mammals include hyenas, hyraxes, macaques, gazelles, oryxes, camels, hedgehogs and sheep. When it comes to rodents, you can find desert rats, porcupines, armadillos, meerkats and gundis. Suna also has the largest spider population in the shinobi world, and you often must check your toilet and shower for any venomous spiders hanging out there. At night you can see bats flying through the sky. The wind realm sea is a home to many kinds of saltwater fish and sometimes you can visit the dolphins, that are particularly friendly to children. Mosquito stings are nasty here, and many diseases, for example those that we call malaria and dengue fever are endemic here. Wind realm citizens have a natural immunity against them and sleep them off in a day, but there are vaccinations available for foreigners.
Tumblr media
Food
Stew and other slow cooked gravy dishes The absolute staple of any Suna nin are stews. They’re elaborate and take the whole day to cook. Every family has its own recipes (and thinks theirs is the best) it’s useful to just cut up veggies and meat, and then slow cook it until it’s done. Stews made in Suna include gumbo, adobo, maafe, and many curries. Spices Wind realm citizens have the greatest spice tolerance in the shinobi world. The greatest variety of spices is produced there, from cumin, fennel seeds, coriander seeds, pepper, chilli, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, bay leaves, tumeric and a myriad of other herbs and spices. Suna food is very spicy for two reasons: many spices they use have a disinfecting effect, and the accelerated production of sweat helps cool down the body. Most spices are sold dried to increase shelf life. Many outsiders travel to Suna to acquire spices directly from the source, thinking they’ll get them for cheap, however, the vendors charge foreigners at a hefty margin. Sunagakure is the greatest exporter of all things spices.
Legumes Legumes play a very important role in the local eating pyramid. They serve as a satiating source of carbohydrates and protein. Beans and lentils can be turned into tofu, stew, mashed or baked, peanuts are often used as a base for stew and sauces in the form of peanut butter. Roasted and salted peanuts are a popular snack in Sunagakure. The biggest buyer of Suna’s exported legumes is Iwagakure.
Cassava This starchy root is soaked and then cooked for a long time to make mash, in stews, or fried. Cassava flour also serves as a gluten free flour alternative and many Suna nin use it to thicken sauces and stews. There’s also tapioca starch which is exported into other countries. Olives In the moderate climate regions, many olive trees are grown, which are then used to make olive oil, the preferred fat source of Suna’s people. Dairy It can often be purchased from nomad families, who sell it in the form of milk, yoghurt, kefir, butter and cheese. The preferred dairy variant is goat’s dairy; however, sheep and cow’s dairy are also available. There’s a possibility that the concept of fermenting milk to make yoghurt and kefir was once brought in by Kiri immigrants, however most wind realm citizens are too proud to give this possibility any thought or think it’s just a myth. Meat Just like dairy, meat can be purchased from several families that travel though the wind realm, or on bazars. It is dried often to increase shelf life. Sweets The best chocolate comes from here. The wind realm has a few islands where cocoa beans are produced, and Suna chocolate is known globally for its rich, earthy, fruity taste. Suna Nin are also the only people that regularly take coffee with them during missions. Most foreigners don’t like the bitter taste, but Sunagakure’s shinobis have realized that the caffeine within coffee beans is useful during missions where you must stay aware for long times. The most common sweetener is cane sugar and used to make coffee candy. Wind realm citizens don’t discriminate, and even children are allowed to have them. Another sweet food, especially popular amongst children are dates. On special occasions, Baklava are offered to the guests or given as a gift. Most foreigners find them way too sweet, but just can’t say no because they recognize the effort and craftsmanship that went into making them. The most popular fruit in Suna are: pomgranate, various kinds of citrus fruits, apples, grapes and green almonds. Ripened almonds are used to make marzipan, which is another one of Suna's culinary prides. Those who try persipan, a localized version from Kirigakure, think that it is a lesser version of their beloved treat.

How does your "canon Cal" look? (Hair, beard, clothes wise)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ooh super fun question. I love all the variety in Survivor's cosmetics but tend to go back to the same few styles:
Hair: Scrapper, occasionally Survivor and Windswept Beard: Short Beard Jacket: Wanderer Shirt: Wanderer or Survivor Pants: Commander, Wanderer, or Survivor
I like the Wanderer outfit especially since BD-1 will sit in the backpack!! And it feels like a natural progression of Cal's design - maintaining a poncho-esque silhouette and his blue/orange/tan color scheme from the first game. Ultimately I think Respawn wanted that gunslinger vibe of the Survivor outfit over a more robe-based nomad look. This concept art for the Wanderer look (originally called Scavenger) makes me think it was one of the earlier character design options created for Survivor.
For the other cosmetics: still on the ginger saber hype train, usually with a mix of gold and wood as the lightsaber hilt materials. Rarely ever mess with the gun. And it's very difficult to customize BD because his design is perfect!!! But in my last playthrough I changed his accent color for each planet/mission.

Shirdal 'Lion-Eagle' Talon Abraxas
Ancient origins of the griffin
A legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion, the head and wings of an eagle, and, sometimes, an eagle's talons as its front feet first appears in ancient Iranian and Egyptian art dating back to before 3000 BCE. In Egypt, a griffin-like animal can be seen on a cosmetic palette from Hierakonpolis, known as the "Two Dog Palette", dated to 3300–3100 BCE. The divine storm-bird, Anzu, half man and half bird, associated with the chief sky god Enlil was revered by the ancient Sumerians and Akkadians. The Lamassu, a similar hybrid deity depicted with the body of a bull or lion, eagle's wings, and a human head, was a common guardian figure in Assyrian palaces.
In Iranian mythology, the griffin is called Shirdal, which means "Lion-Eagle." Shirdals appeared on cylinder seals from Susa as early as 3000 BCE. Shirdals also are common motifs in the art of Luristan, the North and North West region of Iran in the Iron Age, and Achaemenid art. The 15th century BCE frescoes in the Throne Room of the Bronze Age Palace of Knossos are among the earliest depictions of the mythical creatures in ancient Greek art. In Central Asia, the griffin image was later included in Scythian "animal style" artifacts of the 6th–4th centuries BCE.
In his Histories, Herodotus relates travelers' reports of a land in the northeast where griffins guard gold and where the North Wind issues from a mountain cave. Scholars have speculated that this location may be referring to the Dzungarian Gate, a mountain pass between China and Central Asia. Some modern scholars including Adrienne Mayor have theorized that the legend of the griffin was derived from numerous fossilized remains of Protoceratops found in conjunction with gold mining in the mountains of Scythia, present day eastern Kazakhstan. Recent linguistic and archaeological studies confirm that Greek and Roman trade with Saka-Scythian nomads flourished in that region from the 7th century BCE, when the semi-legendary Greek poet Aristeas wrote of his travels in the far north, to about 300 CE when Aelian reported details about the griffin - exactly the period during which griffins were most prominently featured in Greco-Roman art and literature. Mayor argues that over-repeated retelling and drawing or recopying its bony neck frill (which is rather fragile and may have been frequently broken or entirely weathered away) may have been thought to be large mammal-type external ears, and its beak treated as evidence of a part-bird nature that lead to bird-type wings being added. Others argue fragments of the neck frill may have been mistook for remnants of wings.
Lucius Flavius Philostratus (170 – 247/250 CE), a Greek sophist who lived during the reign of the Roman emperor Philip the Arab, in his "Life of Apollonius of Tyana" also writes about griffins that quarried gold because of the strength of their beak. He describes them as having the strength to overcome lions, elephants, and even dragons, although he notes they had no great power of flying long distances because their wings were not attached the same way as birds. He also described their feet webbed with red membranes. Philostratus says the creatures were found in India and venerated there as sacred to the sun. He observed that griffins were often drawn by Indian artists as yoked four abreast to represent the sun.

Some lackluster Cyberpunk 2077 screenshots taken by me 💜
Finished the game (and Phantom Liberty) with my female streetkid V who is very near and dear to my heart, then instantly started a new save as male nomad V (not very far into it yet, but so far I'm really enjoying the male VA!).
The initial issues at launch deterred me from buying it until earlier this year where I basically went in blind. Literally didn't know (or somehow forgot??) that Keanu Reeves was in it so I was going CRAZY during act 1 lmao (also I loooove Johnny 😭)
The first night I played it I think I played for around 8 hours straight until like 5am and it was the most fun I've had gaming in SO LONG. I wish I could go back and experience that feeling again; not having watched any trailers or delving into ANYTHING about the game I was truly just spit out into the world and it was just an incredible experience. I was so immersed in the world that I basically forgot I existed irl that night and it felt so so good.
Would love to delve into some mods (at least cosmetic because I eat that shit up lol) but I'm too scared to corrupt my saves, so who knows if I'll ever do that lmao
Oh also EDGERUNNERS??? Jesus christ I did NOT expect to get so invested in that fucking anime so quickly and now I understand why everyone gets triggered hearing I Really Want to Stay at Your House as they're walking down the street in game or whatever lmao. I'm so glad I waited to watch it until after I had played the game a considerable amount because everything about it hit so hard and I loved recognizing the locations/tech/lore/etc. ahhhhh I need to rewatch it tbh

What’s ya think about V’s lack of cosmetic mods?
V’s in a world full of interesting cosmetics, between freaky maelstrom eyes, fully gold skin, arms covered in spikes
And in all of this, is V, where largely the only visual mods they have are their arms, or maybe some small ones on the face
For our nomads, it can make sense to start out without any crazy visual mods; of course people in the city would dress (or mod themselves) different
But it seems odd that V never gets the option to fit in with the people on the street
I thought so, too, but those cases of extreme customization seem to be few and far between. Look at the examples you gave,
Freaky maelstrom eyes—a gang that possibly required mandatory cyber modification. No wonder their members are encouraged down that path.
Fully gold skin—which is only found in customer service, especially during high-end places. Workers there are fully plated in gold, possibly as a way to dehumanise them and make the rich feel more pandered to.
Arms covered in spikes—I haven't seen that example yet, but I assume it belongs to another extreme group?
V fits in very much with the people on the street; those customizations aren't found in your average npcs roaming the lands (ignore the pictures' subject, I was trying to showcase their cool umbrellas for a future post)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The more unique npcs with important relevance to the plot seem to look like your average human as well, give or take a few cyberware lines.
Viktor, Meredith Jackie, Panam, Johnny, Mama Welles, and Misty all have natural hair colours and eyes. Judy and Evelyn have coloured hair, but nothing more past that.
it's the intricate, fully-coloured tattoos V is missing out on. Judy is covered in them, even Jackie and Viktor have them, yet the options offered to V are mild at best.
Interesting fashion as well, as cool as V's current wardrobe is, it lacks in comparison to the street npc fashion, let alone the fashion of important npcs (I NEED panam's outfit omfg)
And accessories. V lacks very much in accessories, which makes them feel bare in comparison to the average person. Even the simple bullet necklace showing up in cutscenes would've made a major difference. Even Johnny has a dogtag necklace.
At the end of the day, V fits with both street npcs and important npcs. The average nightcity citizen isn't a fashion icon, more on the plain joe side, usually natural coloured hair, some subtle cyberware lines, and a simple tattoo if they're feeling adventurous.
But fuck fitting in man! I wanted to have an all-gold skin!
Is V the protagonist or not?
Like I get it for immersion, but let us make that choice for ourselves, at least. The player should get to decide if they want an npc-looking V or one with flaming wings and diamond skin.
I'd rather see a customization option that I hate than see an option I feel "meh" about. I rather V customization has options that make me go "wtf calm down edgelord" than boring mild ones that I'll mindlessly scroll by.
Be specific. You'll hit bullseye with a certain audience. You can't appease everyone, so you might as well focus on one group or two?
For the sake of not just shitting on things and complaining endlessly about other people's hard work, I'll mention the things I adore about V customization.
The eyes! Oh, the eyes are the most creative I have seen in a game full stop. Those double pupils one made me stop in awe, seeing them completely reset my brain preference, and I went to make a punk looking V instead of the plain one I was aiming for. Even if I didn't end up picking those eyes, I didn't stray from the path of punk V afterwards. Are we playing cyberPUNK or not?
The nails! It's such a nice little detail that brings me so much joy. How clever it is for the devs of a fps game to remember that the protagonist's hands are the part you'll be seeing the most of, outside of cutscenes. So not only you get the choice to decide their nail length, but also completely change the colour?
And those weren't mere colours, no, there were fully intricate designs there, a lot of them had logos of corporations and brands which fit amazingly in this dystopia corpo world. Some were metalic, others were matt, I was overjoyed. I changed V's nails on the regular ingame. I notice them whenever I reload the gun.
The hair options were nice, but there is room for improvement. In my opinion, anything that has to do with colour in character making should have side options for a hue, saturation, and brighteness sliders. The colour combinations ingame are absolutely beautiful, I love how vivid a lot of them are. But they're lacking in quantity, and adding every colour under the sun will just be tedious.
Give us the slider, then add multie haircolour options and give those their own slider, then you're done! They already implemented colour sliders for the cars ingame, it can't be that tricky to add it to hair?
The piercings were also... meh. Plain? Boring. All of them were alternative versions of the same piercing set, minus one item removed. I mean we could've had glowing neon piercings, cosmetic wires that go through your eyes, a glowing tongue! Come on.
The best tattoo system I've seen in a videogame is the DA:V one, where it gives you a matching full-body tattoo based on a theme, and you can decide to hide certian parts of it. So you can end up with any combination of tattoo placements you want. But I also hated how all the tattoo options were vague abstractions at best, general and broad to fit as many people's tastes as possible, only in black and white and never fully coloured.
Lack of bodytype, like why is fem V so scrawny and lithe when I have 10 body points? Give her some muscles she's a merc. Or better yet, give the player the choice to decide. Like DA:V again! We see fat npcs all the time, even Jackie was on the fuller side, so why can't V?
The hair has been a disappointment as well. I love the one I picked, but the other options were... yeah. Especially the lack of curly hair, do we really need the same straight haircut in varying lengths?
Thankfully there are mods to fix all of the above complaints, but it's also sleezy of a whole videogame dev team to leave it to modders and NOT integrate native mod support into the game. No I don't just mean the "play with mods" option at the launcher, I mean a whole mods menu you can scroll and download mods directly from ingame. Like BG3 and DO2. Hell, even allowing a steam workshop would've made a difference.

The Angel of the Crows by Katherine Addison
This is not the story you think it is. These are not the characters you think they are. This is not the book you are expecting.
In an alternate 1880s London, angels inhabit every public building, and vampires and werewolves walk the streets with human beings in a well-regulated truce. A fantastic utopia, except for a few things: Angels can Fall, and that Fall is like a nuclear bomb in both the physical and metaphysical worlds. And human beings remain human, with all their kindness and greed and passions and murderous intent.
Jack the Ripper stalks the streets of this London too. But this London has an Angel. The Angel of the Crows.
-
Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke by Eric LaRocca
A whirlpool of darkness churns at the heart of a macabre ballet between two lonely young women in an internet chat room in the early 2000’s – a darkness that threatens to forever transform them once they finally succumb to their most horrific desires.
What have you done today to deserve your eyes?
-
Always Human by Ari North
In the near-future, people use technology to give the illusion of all kinds of body modifications-but some people have “Egan’s Syndrome,” a highly sensitive immune system that rejects these “mods” and are unable to use them. Those who are affected maintain a “natural” appearance, reliant on cosmetics and hair dye at most to help them play with their looks.
Sunati is attracted to Austen the first time she sees her and is drawn to what she assumes is Austen’s bravery and confidence to live life unmodded. When Sunati learns the truth, she’s still attracted to Austen and asks her on a date. Gradually, their relationship unfolds as they deal with friends, family, and the emotional conflicts that come with every romance. Together, they will learn and grow in a story that reminds us no matter how technology evolves, we will remain . . . always human.
-
Affinity by Sarah Waters
Set in and around the women’s prison at Milbank in the 1870s, Affinity is an eerie and utterly compelling ghost story, a complex and intriguing literary mystery and a poignant love story with an unexpected twist in the tale. Following the death of her father, Margaret Prior has decided to pursue some ‘good work’ with the lady criminals of one of London’s most notorious gaols. Surrounded by prisoners, murderers and common thieves, Margaret feels herself drawn to one of the prisons more unlikely inmates – the imprisoned spiritualist – Selina Dawes. Sympathetic to the plight of this innocent-seeming girl, Margaret sees herself dispensing guidance and perhaps friendship on her visits, little expecting to find herself dabbling in a twilight world of seances, shadows, unruly spirits and unseemly passions.
-
A Memory Called Empire (Teixcalaan series) by Arkady Martine
Ambassador Mahit Dzmare arrives in the center of the multi-system Teixcalaanli Empire only to discover that her predecessor, the previous ambassador from their small but fiercely independent mining Station, has died. But no one will admit that his death wasn’t an accident—or that Mahit might be next to die, during a time of political instability in the highest echelons of the imperial court.
Now, Mahit must discover who is behind the murder, rescue herself, and save her Station from Teixcalaan’s unceasing expansion—all while navigating an alien culture that is all too seductive, engaging in intrigues of her own, and hiding a deadly technological secret—one that might spell the end of her Station and her way of life—or rescue it from annihilation.
-
Ninefox Gambit (The Machineries of Empire series) by Yoon Ha Lee
When Captain Kel Cheris of the hexarchate is disgraced for her unconventional tactics, Kel Command gives her a chance to redeem herself, by retaking the Fortress of Scattered Needles from the heretics. Cheris’s career isn’t the only thing at stake: if the fortress falls, the hexarchate itself might be next.
Cheris’s best hope is to ally with the undead tactician Shuos Jedao. The good news is that Jedao has never lost a battle, and he may be the only one who can figure out how to successfully besiege the fortress. The bad news is that Jedao went mad in his first life and massacred two armies, one of them his own.
As the siege wears on, Cheris must decide how far she can trust Jedao – because she might be his next victim.

So I'm sure that you know how jagex turned Burthorpe into the starter area of rs3 Where the tutorial is and all the new player skill guides are. And has graphically reworked everything including the buildings and the people. And you know how since jagex released Necromancy as a skill they allow you to see the ghosts of canonically dead npcs in Um. And technically allows some interaction with them. And you know how mod Raven said that one time around the release of Nomad's elegy, that the rs3 team actually regrets killing Cyrisus during WGS? And you know how in Path of Glouphrie Hazelmere told you of the 8 npc's sent to rescue you, 2 will survive, one representing the path of the warrior and one representing the path of the slayer?
And you know how one of these 2 NPCs, specifically the one representing the path of the warrior, is Harrallak Menarous, the most irrelevant npc in Burthorpe, so irrelevant in fact that in 2 graphical updates they haven't fixed his coif ass hair clipping through his hat? And haven't even added any dialogue to him since the Necromancy release, not even some generic "hey since u talk to the spirits of the dead, can you pls buy Ghommal and Sloane a pint?" With a "thanks" and some cosmetic rapier as a reward or whatever? So are the OSRS team gonna stick beat for beat to the original WGS script and let irrelevant nobody Harrallak live while killing Cyrisus for the shock value (which will shock no one bc we all knew it was coming) or are they actually gonna do what the rs3 team couldn't by letting Cyrisus live and continue his character arc by either: 1. Going to work @ the warrior's guild, even if only temporarily now that they have so many vacancies, possibly rising in the ranks until he becomes guildmaster or at least in charge of one of the rooms like Sloane is now (Because even if he doesn't rise to become guildmaster, I'd much rather buy the strength cape for example from Cyrisus who demonstrated strength by his willingness to carry on despite reaching rock bottom before we met him in Dream Mentor than from some quaternary NPC like Yadech Strongarm who didn't even EXIST prior to wgs), thus paying the player's kindness forward by being a guide to others the way the player was a guide to him? or 2. Making him a Slayer Master / Slayer Master in training, since his npc contact dialogue about hunting the Kalphite Queen suggests he already is on frequent bossing trip terms with the other Slayer Masters and could possibly be training with them. He is so good at combat and slayer at this point that maybe he's learning slayer master minutia from his slayer master buddies during those current trips as we speak, and is reasonably close to graduating to slayer master himself, and he's as good a candidate to replace one of the fallen slayer masters soon anyway, which will also complete his character arc by making him a guide to learners the way the player was to him, just in an aspect he seems to be happy with on his own without being introduced to it by others.
Or, maybe, they can just let him live and do something else thing that will not involve combat directly bc he seems to be meeting with world leaders on his off time and discussing weird secret stuff so he can be involved in trying to help us somehow through that. Or even write their own ideas. I mean, osrs has a writing team of people who, from what I've seen, can actually continue a story and don't need to directly copy paste every last thing rs3 does into their game. Why not develop an existing character instead of killing him for the sake of avoiding killing some other overhyped loser (Lucien) that will die in the wgs sequel anyway??? I mean surely they can spare some character development for Cyrisus this time around instead of letting him die simply to shock the 5 people who don't skip quest dialogue and very slightly like him bc he was in a quest once?

V[ala] Yvonne Dorian
(& Vince[nt] Dorian (Twins))
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She/They
26
Nomad turned Street Kid (via jackie)
Natural hair and eyes: blonde, dark brown
Both usually swapped for cosmetic appearance, hair no longer dyed after the biochip because of effort and time
Naturally a little distrustful, especially of city folk, but Jackie's dumb charm easily wins her over after their first gig. She tends to keep quiet, weighing her choices before speaking when possible. Sometimes brash, but has pretty good self control when it comes to handling situations, even if she sometimes chooses Violence. Left her brother Vince behind in the nomad clan and doesn't know where he went when it split.
She's not the most spiritual, but she's open to trying and learning, and hopes that if there is a God, He’s kinder than the world would lead one to believe, but she doubts it.
A net runner of decent quality before they come into NC, her skill rockets upward once she has good tech. Usually combat based hacks but they can wiggle through the Net if needed.
Often comes across intimidating based on resting bitch face and a tendency to lurk in shadows, a habit of avoiding sun from their Nomad lifestyle.
Missing their left arm elbow down, replaced with a cybernetic. Her arm was lost when she was about 13, during a raid from the Raffen Shiv. There was chaos, and she was trying to find her brother when a Shiv found her and attacked. Her facial scar is from the same attack, the same Raffen held her face against a piece of hot metal and seared the marred shape into her face. The pain still haunts her some days, waking up in cold sweat and with gritted teeth.
Lean, slim, has hip dips, tends to wear boots with a little platform for height and style. If doing netrunner shenanigans, she'll be in a runner suit (sleeveless), jacket when not actively on ice. Day to day is more comfortable, looser clothing, baggy pants and tank tops usually. Some scattered freckles, and her eyes are a little low lidded, giving a sort of half lidded glare when she’s resting her face. She has slightly sharp canines, and she’s considered having them made sharper or longer but thus far hasn’t. She stands roughly 5 foot 8 inches.
Falls a little in love with Jackie, but would never admit it, especially when he and Misty get close. She would rather he be happy, obviously.
Gets along well with most fixers, due to caution above all. Spends hours at Viktor’s when Jackie is busy, doesn't care about boxing that much but they'll watch the match together. She enjoys company even if silent.
She isn't quite as into boxing as Jackie and Vik, not at first, but she does join them to practice sometimes, or at least watch. Shirtless Jackie is a bonus. After a while it becomes a good stress reliever, and a fun little thing for just the trio of them.
She isn't cold, she's relatively friendly in conversation, but people rarely approach unless they have some kind of biz, likely able to tell her merc self from an average citizen.
Before the Konpeki job, the year and some after meeting Jackie, they don't play their full skill, tend to pull punches and hide the extent of their Net knowledge. In the past she's had people fuck her over for her skills, used it against her, so now she keeps her cards close, doesn't even tell Jackie everything.
She's more ambitious than she lets on, tending to let Jackie take the lead when they work together.
She was unwanted, her mother expecting one child and not two, and was thus unfavored. Her brother did his best to include them when possible.
When their clan melded into Snake Nation, she left just before they dissolved, having made it clear she thought it was a bad idea. They regretted leaving Vince, but he stayed for their mother, loyal to the end. She doesn't know if either of them are alive. She doesn't talk about it.
They've been in a few brief relationships, nothing serious, and a variety of hookups. She's never been picky about gender, but she is picky about trust and vulnerability which usually led to dead ends with partners. Closest she gets to being open is with Jackie, but then he's gone and she closes off again, noticeably. Viktor was likely her 2nd closest friend and he can see her recede back into herself, their chats shorter, like when they first came to NC. For a while they also become a little more free with violence, less careful during gigs where they'd have taken a quiet approach before. This, at least, fades a little in the weeks after Jackie's funeral.
They feel bad being so distant to Mama Welles, the only real mother figure she's ever known, caring in her own way. She pushes for Misty and her to get along, knowing they'll need the others' support. Especially knowing their own diagnosis after the biochip. In her mind it's practical to try and distance, to try and connect others to fill the gap where her life will be. Even if they'll fight for survival, she knows it isn't a guarantee. She's not so naive.
She also doesn't hold back as much as she used to, taking dangerous jobs where Jackie would've turned it down. It isn't a problem, and it's almost startling how quickly her name rises to be known. Fixers come to her first, rely on her skill and know the job always gets done. She makes sure to get Jackie’s drink named at the Afterlife.
Even if she’s gotten under the skin of most gangs, a few individuals in all of them owe her something at some point, simply by coincidence of her saving their ass in some way. She tends to pop up where trouble is, after all.
At first with Johnny, she's sharp right back to him. Belittling and insulting each other, or fully ignoring him at times when it's most convenient. But after some time, as their brain is slowly fried, they find some kind of middle ground. Johnny claims he wants to help her, and wants her to help him. Partners. She doesn't trust a word, at first, but as he opens up so does she. Notices how he'll appear in their vision to goof off, to point out things she might miss. They begin to work in tandem, like a pair of matched gears. When he takes the body to “tell Rogue about us” she’s hesitant but she does give in, give trust. But after the mess, waking up feeling like she’s been thrown under a train, head pounding, her temper rears and she snaps at him about wanting to simply take the body. A few days pass, quieter than usual, only broken when V and Rogue handle Grayson in their attempt to find Smasher. She doesn’t see a point in killing the pathetic idiot they’ve cornered, and for that she gets Johnny’s car along with his gun, which he seems at least somewhat glad about. That night, under stars in the oil field, she scratches a tiny memento to the man in her head who technically saved her life, and despite all odds, might still help do so again. She openly admits he fucked up, tells him that breaking trust when she gave it after so much hesitance, he only gets one final chance from here. In his eyes, reflecting the sheen of neon on the horizon, the city his halo, she can see truth and desperate gratitude. Even if it makes her a fool, she believes him, and her heart might always hold a beat for him, until it can’t anymore.
She hates corps and suits, which is a good starting point with Johnny, at least. It can lead to trouble often, but many things do, considering how often she ends up being shot at. Doesn't trust Takemura, not fully, and suspects he'd turn right back to Arasaka the moment Yorinobu is put down. While they’re grateful he saved their life, she knows better than to trust based on that alone. Nomads are generally alright, but the ones who go Raffen have to do something bad enough to be kicked out first.
She doesn't have a favorite gun, really, til she gets her hands on Johnny's. The fleeting memories, the somehow familiar weight of it. The solid, loud noise punctuating the air when she fires, and that buzz of adrenaline from herself and Johnny mingling in their brain. Another piece of the puzzle that is becoming them, slotted into place perfectly, every little thing making them feel like they were somehow made for each other, made to be whole and one, impossibly.
It takes a while before she reaches out to Judy to ask about Evelyn. It’s a combination of mistrust for the pair, unsure how much Judy had to do with all the chaos, and unsure if it’ll help at all anyway. Every avenue needs to be explored, though, and they’re careful and clipped until they realize Judy knows about as much as they do. They manage to track down Evelyn, in her state, and V is glad she didn't hold mercy on the way in. When they get Judy’s panicked call, arrive to find the scene of the suicide, they try to stay as stable as possible for Judy’s sake. It isn’t the first time she’s seen a suicide, or even the first time she’s carried that body, but it’s never easy. After finding out about Woodman, she’s doubly furious she left him alive. Not for long, I’m sure. At first, though, she refuses to help Judy with Clouds, thinking it too dangerous for her. But as time ticks down, as she keeps making connections and bonds that she doesn’t mean to, she can’t help but remember Judy, alone and miserable and reckless. A place Val herself has been often.
She and Panam butt heads a little, instead of bonding about being nomads, at least at first. V thinks Panam is a little recklessly vengeful. Hearing its Raffen Shiv, though, makes her willing to take action. It also makes her a little less trusting of Rogue. After a successful mission or two, they grow closer, and she ends up teasing Panam the way she might've with her brother. V has to remind herself that the Aldecaldo’s aren’t her clan, even if she kind of wants them to be. Another thing to keep to herself. It gets harder and harder to distance, to the point where they damn near adopt her into the family, and she has to run off again before they convince her. She doesn't even really want to tell Panam about the chip, the damage, but obviously after a point she has to. And truthfully, if the world was simpler, she might've just said yes when Panam asked her to come with them.
“You can count on me.” It slips out often, And at some point in her mind she hears an echo of herself. “Please, don't count on me. I won't be here for long.” She wants to help more, do more, be more. But she also tries so desperately to keep distance between her and the world now, trying so hard to minimize the inevitable hole left by her death.
A random encounter and a virus in a BD later, when she wakes up in the cold bathroom of the scav haunt she raided with Jackie, she feels an unfortunately familiar terror. Naked and likely minutes from being cut up into organs and implants, truly the only thing that snaps her back into fight and not flight, or just pure panic, is Johnny. He's calling her stupid, sure, but his voice and presence are enough to ground her in the present, enough to push away the past for now until she can wipe out this apartment for a 2nd time and get free. As tempting as it is to kill the fucker who sold her the stupid thing, she allows him to get the fuck out of the city forever. Then, she goes home and curls into a ball on her mattress, and recedes into her mind in a way that Johnny cannot see into. She can’t feel the concern of him lurking outside the mental door she’s closed. She’s never told him much about her past, never let him into the detailed parts of those memories, keeping them in an intentional fog when she feels him probing around. Shockingly for once, he has the wherewithal to not pry on this particular topic, not just yet, anyway.
She’s very hesitant to take the Peralez job, doubly so working with a cop, but he’s nothing like the usual badges she’s had to handle in the past. A sense of genuine justice is clear in him, almost to a point of naivety. It’s almost admirable, sometimes, even if she thinks he could stand to think longer on choices before making them. The fact there's a kid involved means she’ll help, no question. Always, always if a kid needs help V will burn buildings down for them. The entire situation with his nephew is insanely disturbed, and she can’t help but gravitate to little moments of connection with the family. Maybe she could call it trauma bonding instead of investigating the real feelings she shoves down, because she doesn’t trust herself to care about anyone, in any way, not when so much bad shit has happened in the past. Either way, she’s glad to see River has a family where she no longer does. She’s tempted to give in to his obvious flirting but she knows it’d be a fling, she’s not really in a place to be with anyone, and he deserves better than being hurt by the likes of her. Despite all this, she does give in for one night, but the next morning she tells him she can't do this, and tells him the truth of the relic chip. She doesn't want him hurt, so she’s honest, and he’s understanding, which softens the blow.
They're hesitant to give Johnny much trust after the initial joyride, but his thinly veiled concern for his old friend Kerry intrigues them enough that they’re willing to check in. It’s definitely weird, and neither of them fully know how to approach the other, but they grow an appreciation for their bond through Johnny and their roles as his unlikely and rare friends. She definitely thinks Kerry’s short lived rivalry with the Us Cracks band is ridiculous, but she’s not one to say no to a little chaos, and she definitely needs to burn off steam. Besides, she knows he wouldn’t fire a shot at them, he’s not the type. Not like her.
Excellent driver, enjoys the races when Claire brings her. Nomad life gives her extra connection to her own vehicles, and while she doesn’t ride Jackie’s bike, she lovingly cares for it once he’s gone. Her own bike is more scratched up, regular use meaning it runs on need and not aesthetic. When they rode together, he’d refuse to let her drive too often, knowing he’d end up gripping the seat in fear of a crash while she held back a grin, drifting the car/bike around yet another corner. She doesn’t drive for fun quite as often anymore, until Johnny starts chatting one day in the passenger seat and she takes aimless turns just to keep talking.
She bought back her old nomad car, clunker that it is, craving connection to family even if it barely exists. She likes to take a break from the city, pop out to the Badlands to drive like a maniac, no rules or people to endanger with reckless drifting. Johnny sometimes makes an appearance, and while he might swear or insult her driving, V can see the grin he’s trying to hide when she spins the car through another dust cloud kicked up by their wheels.
After a point, she realizes she expects warmth when she hears the little audio glitch that indicates Johnny nearby and he’s standing close to her, close enough it should feel like something. Time passes and little pieces of her lifelong walls begin to fall, pebbles at a time. Little things where she can see the cracks in his rockerboy asshole facade, where he can see the scared, lost nomad under the sarcastic surface of her.
Much to her regret, she can feel when the start of her fondness begins to turn into something more. She dedicates too much energy to hide it, keeping it buried, refusing to bring anything else into this insane dynamic they have with Johnny. Besides, he would never feel that way for her, he’s stuck on his AI girlfriend beyond the Blackwall, isn’t he? Either her or Rogue. So she keeps that shit to herself, as much as she possibly can, because who knows how much he can see into her head through the chip. She’s about as good at feelings as he is, anyway. Even after his body joyride, she doesn't remove the Johnny + V from her arm at any point, and on occasion will catch herself tracing the lines of it when she feels particularly lonely.
Luckily for Johnny, she already smokes, and likely smokes extra after Konpeki, at least for a while, until it gets hard to breathe on a good day. The biochip is hard on the body and brain, of course, and she has to push through migraines regularly by the time she and Panam get Hellman. Some days it's bad enough, Johnny sounds more concerned than she thinks he means to when he asks how she’s doing, feeling the crushing grip of a migraine behind her eyes, like her head might burst as she grips the steering wheel. Work to be done, always, always, no time to really rest.
She understands why Johnny hates Arasaka, to a mild degree, just from his memories. When he explains further, it begins to click into place even as she feels her chest squeezing in reaction to his outburst. He’s not some insane rockerboy with a vengeance, he’s got good reason for his hatred and he’s pointed it the right way, even if his methods are extreme. And hell, she can’t fully judge him for killing people, because that’s half her job, even if it couldn’t match the numbers of Johnny’s bloodied hands. She’s willing to hold them with her own, stained red.
She's scared of dying, she's human, of course she's scared. She doesn't really admit it to anyone aside from Vik and Misty that first night, doesn't even mention it to Johnny, but he obviously knows. He's in her head, he can feel it, he sees how she can't even sleep through the mix of pain and fear most nights. At some point she knows he knows, but she adamantly refuses to delve deeper into feelings with him, or risk saying more than she means to.
Her anger can be loud or quiet, depending on the situation. She still wishes she had a chance to beat the chrome out of Dex Deshawn, violently and painfully. But other times, their rage is like ice, seeping into their bones and making them stiff and harsh. At it’s peak, she’ll even snap at Johnny, not just a regular barb but a genuinely hurtful moment only she could find. He usually leaves for a while, and she spends a few days sitting in regret. That’s pretty common for her, she’s a pit of regret, a prison of her own making that she tends to ignore. Not much she can do about it at this point, if she dies first she can’t fix any of her many mistakes.
When she accepts a job from Wakako about killing some serial killer who may go free, a feeling in their gut stirs that something is wrong but they ignore and accept. Money is money. But then the client is shot, because he and V were both careless on approach, and both Johnny and this odd prisoner are asking her to go with them, and she does because what else to do in this situation? And Joshua, the man she was sent to kill, tells her about how he has murdered (so has she) and how he has robbed (so has she) and how he found God and seeks forgiveness (she does not). He asks about her, and she, at the table of a murderer and his victim’s family, speaks more openly than expected. Speaks about how even if there is God, that she might believe, but she refuses to worship. After all, if God is all seeing and knowing, He must know and see the state of the world. He must not care, and maybe He is right to turn his back. “You and I, Joshua, we are the proof that God is not looking. We may be his creations, but we are our own destruction, and He doesn’t want to see it.” She urges him not to sell out in a BD, as much as he wishes to get the message out, she can see he isn’t seeking God entirely of His message, but instead as redemption for the things he’s done. To live with his choices and regrets, to learn if God wishes to even be found, let alone by monsters like them. It may be best to let the world be, to hold onto the message you wish to send, instead of letting others profit from something you wish to share freely. But this is Night City, and even the word of God is a paid commodity.
The call from Songbird is jarring and the horrid, vice-like clench on her skull outside Dogtown brings V’s usual suspicion to the surface. Song seems earnest, but Val knows damn well not to let an appearance fool her by now. Beyond that, she's not exactly primed and ready to save the country, but if there's a peek of hope at the end of this mess, she'll take a look. Saving the President has to get something, you would hope. Meeting Reed was a lot less eventful than expected, but the cold press of iron to her ribs and the surprise (fear?) on Johnny's face is a bold start. After he takes Meyers out of Dogtown, V can't help but stare at the stupid little token and be glad she didn't take that oath. Either way she doesn't trust a soul here, not Song, not Reed and absolutely not Meyers. She just wants to chase down another possible lead of survival, at almost any cost. It's unnerving, and a little upsetting that Johnny has to be silenced in order for Songbird to actually get in touch, which adds to V's hesitance. With Reed and Alex both, she tries to keep her situation to herself until they absolutely have to know, and usually doesn’t outwardly align with the agent thing. She also ensures Reed knows how irritated she is about the continued omission of facts.

ok after making my last post i realized i needed to draw albatrio as fantasy creatures from my og world (that i first made at like 10 or 11) athzurea, like. immediately. so
Tumblr media
i’m gonna explain the species too. ok so
gillion is an oceanic alluraean cat, which is a non-flying semiaquatic feline about the size of a big house cat. oceanic alluraean cats cannot breathe underwater, but can hold their breath for hours at a time and spend most of their time fully beneath the surface, though they do have settlements both above and below the ocean. they are also one of the most private sentient species, rarely interacting with those outside their own societies, but not nearly as secluded socially as dragons or unicorns, though. (story-wise i think he also could have made for a pretty good unicorn but i wouldn’t have been able to keep him looking so… like him. y’know?)
jay is a mountain gryphon, one of the larger intelligent creatures, about lion-sized, though their size does vary amongst individuals, as gryphons are some of the most visually diverse of the athzurean people. they are also the most widely spread across the world, usually taking on the role of the upper class in most cities and other large settlements. their tendency to gravitate towards power is the source of the majority of conflicts in athzurea.
and chip is an ashwolf, which are between the size of a large dog and a wolf, and not pictured is their clawed wings. they are relatively unsocial people, sticking to the outskirts of settlements and being primarily nomadic in nature. they don’t tend to make a lot of friends, but they have very loyal family groups and were the first group of people to domesticate the now-popular pet, the puppy spider. and culturally, they are very drawn to fire, ritually running through forest fires as a sign of being a mature adult, and staining and marking their bodies with ash and charcoal. cosmetic burn scars are also popular.
