I just started watching Legend of Ruyi with my mom and she enjoys it. She REALLY prefers shows with lots of historically accurate details, including historical attitudes. That means no pining after the Emperor like a modern woman and expecting monogamy, essentially, which is the reason we had to stop Empress of China. Her favorites are Story of Yanxi Palace, Longest Day in Chang'an, and Goryeo-Khitan War, and Legend of Ruyi might also end up up there - she's enjoying it so far. Any other recommendations? I'm thinking Luoyang after we finish Ruyi but idk.
That depends how not modern she wants - Luoyang has a female policewoman (or equivalent) as one of the mains and I am pretty sure it was not a thing. If that's not an issue, then it's great!
CDRAMAS
Three Kingdoms 2010 is great at feeling period appropriate though there are very few female characters if that is an issue for your mother.
The Advisors Alliance is wonderful, does not have anachronistic attitudes towards either morality or polygamy but more prominent roles for women than Three Kingdoms.
The Story of Han Dynasty (2005) and The Legend of Chu and Han (also known as The King's War) from 2012 also feel period appropriate - the former is old so looks it but vvv solid and the latter is wonderful and that cast!
Any of the Qin Empire series (there are three) would fit the bill.
I've heard amazing things about Legend of Zhen Huan and I peeked at it and it looked very good, but I don't really do most harem dramas so I haven't watched it in full.
In general, because I am not a harem drama person, the recs I gave are more battle/politics/dude heavy so I am gonna throw this ask open to my mutuals who do watch harem dramas for more recs.
KDRAMAS
Most of these are gonna be somewhat older because clearly what your mom likes are traditional sageuks and those are sadly not made much any more.
If your mom liked GK War, then may I recommend King of Tears Lee Bang Won. It's by the same screenwriter, and has the same "adult people doing adult things in period appropriate manner" vibe. Not a pretty boy in sight.
Six Flying Dragons also deals with Lee Bang Won and is one of my favorite period dramas of all time. It's quite epic, has a huge cast of characters, more prominent female roles than King of Tears and to me feels period appropriate enough (no royals yearn for monogamy.)
Tree with Deep Roots - same people who did SFD, this one centers sort of on creation of written Korean alphabet and is not at all boring, surprisingly enough. It's actually intense and heartbreaking and very adult.
The Nokdu Flower - I am in the middle of it but from what I've heard it does not go off the rails. It's set during the Peasant Revolution in 1894-95 and centers around three main characters - a female trader, an illegitimate son of a noble family who's an enforcer, and a legitimate noble heir who goes down a dark path. It's grim and not at all court adjacent so may not be your mom's bag but it would quailfy otherwise.
Empress Ki - this is the closest I've seen a kdrama do a harem cdrama and it's glorious. There is harem and murders and what not and it's definitely female centric and does not feel modern to me (the emperor may be obsessed with the eventual Empress Ki - and historically he appeared to be so as well - but he has plenty of other wives.)
All the good older traditional sageuks about monarchs or their families - Jumong, Lee San Wind of the Palace, Queen Seon Duk, Dong Yi.
Slave Hunters - once again, not royalty centric at all, more dealing with dregs of society, but it's smart and adult and doesn't feel particularly anachronistic to me (the attitudes to slavery feel so tragically realistic.)
Bossam: Steal the Fate - it deals with the custom of kidnapping widows so they could remarry and is surprisingly gritty and real feeling with a lovely romance in it.
Haechi - it follows Yeongjo when he was still a prince. It's a bit of a mystery/investigative thing.
Damo - a police captain, a tea lady and a rebel leader all get entangled in a conspiracy. It's so grim and amazing and heartbreaking.
Conspiracy in the Court - a grownup mystery during Jeongjo's reign.
Eight Days - also set during Jeongjo's reign and centering around assassination attempts on the king. So smart.
My Dearest - it's set during the Qing invasion of Korea and not at all royalty adjacent in terms of the mains though the king and his heir are prominent supporting characters but the attitudes felt so period appropriate - class attitudes, attitudes towards women losing their honor etc. It was my favorite drama last year.

Hi I loved your recs! I was wondering if you could rec some shows that have the found family trope? Thank you !
sure! here's a few of my favorites to get you started!
mystic pop-up bar is one of my favorite kdramas! premise is that a 20-something year old guy named kang bae has a weird ability where whenever anyone touches him, they're compelled to tell the truth/confess secrets. he comes across a pop-up bar one night ran by weol ju, an immortal shaman who is cursed to resolve the grudges of 10,000 humans or she won't be able to reincarnate and gwi, who is a former Ghost Cop who is helping weol ju complete her mission. kang bae teams up with them, because his ability is really useful for finding out grudges!, with a promise from weol ju that if he helps her resolve the grudges she'll remove his powers. the first ep is a little meh, but keep going! one of the best, most feel-good found family stories there is
a journey to love is a wuxia roadtrip that has a band of elite soldiers teaming up with the world's most dangerous assassin and a sheltered princess in disguise as a man. character-driven and centered on the bonds everyone makes!! warning: sad ending
vincenzo has a found family...mafia style! a mafia guy from italy comes to south korea in search of gold, teams up with a crooked lawyer, and collects a bunch of loveable weirdos as he takes on an Evil Pharma company
go ahead is a cdrama that completely runs on the premise of how important it is to have a family of choice. three kids are raised by two dads from separate families, and have to navigate the toxic relationships they have with their birth parents
tale of nokdu is a gender-reversal cross-dressing kdrama that also has a running theme of how important it is to have a family of choice. everyone by the end of the show becomes a big, motley family and the ending is a pure shot of serotonin. premise begins with nokdu disguising himself as a woman to enter an all-women's village in order to find out about some assassins that have been targeting his family

it's the cross-dressing of nokdu that does it for me in the tale of nokdu. tbh it suggests that dong-ju is much more fluid in her feelings than the simple mlw narrative implies. she loves a man that dresses like a woman, that passes as a woman for the vast majority of the show.
in parallel, he loves a woman that dresses as a man, that passes as a man so that she can avenge her family. and it's the fact that she dresses as a man that leaves such a strong impression on him upon meeting her again at the kisaeng place.
i think the gender dynamics, the fluidity of emotions were so good in this show, it makes the lead pairing so interesting. on the other hand, a lot of secondary interactions between the characters become layered with deeper meaning due to the constant cross-dressing of the main characters, who appear to only be able to achieve their goals through their incessant back-and-forths between dressing as a woman or dressing as a man. for nearly the entire show, it's as if transgressing these lines are essential parts to their own identity. it is the way they choose to be able to fully navigate their worlds and cope with their quests for something else (both seeking a form of revelation by the way).
if we take this into account: she loves a man who dresses as a woman while trying to learn the truth about who he is. he loves a woman who dresses as a man while trying to reveal who she is. and their identity crises are both related to the king (symbolically the patriarchal figure). the concept is actually sooooo powerful.
it's such a good show, way more nuanced and complex than meets the eye.
(also huuuuge props for featuring only-women spaces <3)

📰 Focus People: Gucci Global Ambassador, Actress Park Gyuyoung... A Chameleon Who Blends into Characters
Tumblr media
[Sisun News - Reporter Yang Wonmin] Actress Park Gyuyoung and the 'face genius' Cha Eunwoo's drama 'A Good Day to be a Dog' continues to be a hit worldwide. After ranking number one on Korea's Netflix TV series, it consistently remains within the top three, and it also ranked first in drama on Japan's OTT platform U-NEXT. Additionally, on the global OTT platform Rakuten Viki, it debuted in first place in 93 countries including the United States, Brazil, and India during its opening week, showcasing the prestige of K-dramas.
Park Gyuyoung, who has become a trendsetting actress, did not always dream of acting. She attended Busan Foreign Language High School and then entered Yonsei University, majoring in Clothing and Textiles. Park's foray into the entertainment industry came about by chance. While at university, she modelled for the cover of "College Tomorrow," and JYP Entertainment approached her with a casting offer after seeing her work. Although such a sudden career change could have been met with parental opposition, she instead received their strong support and embarked on this path.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later, Park Gyuyoung made her debut as the leading lady in the music video for singer Jo Kwon's song "Crosswalk," garnering attention. Even before the music video's release, there was curiosity about who would be the female lead opposite EXO's Suho, whose participation was already known. Park Gyuyoung, who was an actor trainee at JYP Entertainment at the time, left a strong impression with her calm and poignant portrayal of a breakup, marked by her characteristically soft ambiance.
After a series of special appearances and minor roles, Park Gyuyoung began taking on main and supporting roles. She built her recognition through web dramas and then through appearances in tvN's "Bring It On Ghost," JTBC's "Just Between Lovers," "The Third Charm," and SBS's "Nokdu Flower." She then received acclaim for her acting skills in the 2020 tvN drama "It's Okay to Not Be Okay," where she played the role of a psychiatric nurse named Nam Juri.
Tumblr media
In 2021, she starred as the protagonist 'Kim Dali' in KBS2's "Dali and Gamjatang." With her confirmed appearance in "Dali and Gamjatang" alongside actor Kim Minjae, many people anticipated 'the chemistry of the most attention-grabbing trending actors,' and it turned out to be a great success. The drama helped to revive KBS's Wednesday-Thursday slot with an average viewership in the 5% range and concluded on a high note. At the end of that year, Park Gyuyoung received the Best New Actress award at the KBS Drama Awards, along with the Best Couple Award with Kim Minjae.
Tumblr media
Park Gyuyoung has notably appeared in many Netflix dramas, to the extent that she's been dubbed 'Netflix's daughter' due to her continuous presence in Netflix series. She captivated a global audience with her role as Yoon Jisoo, wielding a baseball bat against monsters in "Sweet Home," and took on a solo lead role in "Celebrity." With her expected appearance in "Squid Game" Season 2, Park Gyuyoung has firmly established herself as one of Netflix's beloved actors.
Tumblr media
Recently, there has been another piece of good news for Park Gyuyoung. In September, she was selected as a global ambassador for the Italian luxury brand Gucci. Her popularity, bolstered by consecutive hits on Netflix, led to Gucci choosing to partner with her. Park expressed her honour at being a global ambassador for Gucci, hoping to showcase her individuality, passion, and confidence through various activities with the brand.
Tumblr media
The drama "A Good Day to be a Dog" in which Park is currently starring is based on a webtoon that has enjoyed immense popularity and support, especially among teenage and twenty-something women, and has been published as a book series. Authored by Lee Hye, a popular webtoon creator, "A Good Day to be a Dog" is her third work and has been a huge success in the webtoon community due to its solid storyline built from previous experiences and fantasy elements. The news of the drama adaptation piqued interest in casting, and with the confirmation of Park Gyuyoung, Cha Eunwoo, and Lee Hyunwoo as the leads, expectations were high even before its broadcast due to the 'perfect casting' narrative.
Tumblr media
Park Gyuyoung is an actress who shows different atmospheres and images in each work, seamlessly blending into her roles. Known for her intelligence as well, she is quickly learning and steadily growing. With a sense of responsibility to not let down the directors and production crew she works with, there's anticipation for what new facets Park Gyuyoung will show in future works.

thanks for the answer and this has nothing to do with it but I'm not french but I lived there for 3 years and man the rise of fascism everywhere is terrifying we're heading into a very dark place I hope you stay safe. Back to the topic at hand I'm a sucker for a woman who will literally burn down anything and anyone for the person she loves and we so rarely get them whereas it's pretty much every romantic male love interest ever lmao, which are your favorite fls of that type ? Couples where you can never say for sure who loves whom more?
oh thank you 💜 I hope you had a nice time when you were here at least! (now I feel very curious about where you went and why you came lol) yeah it's very scary and it's also worrying to see how weak the institutions are here against abuses of power...
no literally I need more writers to realise I want to see women go crazy for!! not many are coming to mind right now but my first thought was sol from lovely runner who literally travelled through times several times to save her man and did so much no matter what it'd cost her to change his fate. also mokha from castaway diva who kept looking for kiho after years on a deserted island, who was ready to lose her career and to face his abusive dad to keep him safe. in my lovely liar I thought the savior/lover dynamic was really nice because she gets to protect him and his identity many times and she trusts him when no one else does. also in run on (there's no fighting or whatever in this and the stakes definitely aren't as high in this one but I'm contractually obliged - to myself - to mention run on all the time) because she truly advocates and stands up for him and pushes him to ask for more. in all of these I'd say the guy is usually as devoted and as protective and that they both learn how to better take care of themselves through their shared love. I'm kind of tempted to say alchemy of souls but the relationship in this show is a league of its own but there is a lot of talk about killing/fighting for the other or even directly the other lol and then there's happiness where they're both fighting and killing zombies but also very much willing to kill and die for each other (and although she's the one who's more blunt in her feelings and he has feelings first she literally risks becoming a zombie for him). I think there's some of that in the tale of nokdu but I don't remember enough tbh

I saw you reblogged nokdu flower and I went down the rabbit hole, such an underrated fantastic show, the writing the performances the character arcs and I loved your tags about Ja in and how gone she is for yi kang, I also laughed at your comment regarding princess man and how you didn't like it bc you were rooting for the usurper which I love that drama and Se ryung is the gold standard for female leads but valid choice. Do you have any recs for female leads like that who are completely gone for their romantic half especially in the last year? We get a lot of really dedicated men but not so much women.
This is a great question that I have been thinking about for a day. I think you're totally right about the imbalance in terms of who gets to be ride-or-die for their love interest in dramas, especially from the start. I think a lot of female leads get to that place, but frequently they have to overcome some kind of personal obstacle before they get there. Someone like Ja In, who falls for Yi Kang pretty quickly and never wavers, even though it takes them a while in the narrative to finally get together, is rarer. I could only think of two examples from recent dramas that show us something similar: the first is See You in My 19th Life, where the vast majority of the female lead's motivation is her devotion to the male lead, which literally stretches across multiple lifetimes. The second is My Liberation Notes, where Kim Ji Won's character pretty early on clocks Son Seok Goo and pulls him into her orbit. Their relationship is unconventional (to say the least), but as much as there's obviously something she wants from him ("Worship me"!!!!!!!!), she also gives him a genuinely radical devotion that embraces his flaws and his failures, and that love never wavers.
Those are the two dramas that I think come closest to what you're describing. Something like Moon in the Day, which was popular on this website last year (and which I liked quite a bit), gets us to that point but it takes a while. Our Blooming Youth also kind of has something like that, but I would never recommend that drama to anyone lol. Bossam gets there, but not quickly (understandably; he did kidnap her!). Grand Prince, maybe? (though my memories of that show are pretty dim, I fear)
If anybody sees this and thinks of a drama that meets Anon's requirements, please add it! There must be more devoted heroines that I either can't remember or that are in dramas I haven't seen.
PS We'll have to agree to disagree on TPM/Se Ryung! For years I was afraid to say that I didn't like that drama (anytime I dislike a drama that most people on here like it makes me nervous), but now I guess I'm living in my truth. I'm happy you like it, but it was just deeply not for me.

You know what the saddest thing about the village of widows being destroyed and all those women having to run despite having committed no crimes is? The saddest thing about Lady Cheon dying after losing something she worked so hard to build?
They wanted to live in a world where women didn’t have to hide... where they weren’t so mistreated or reliant or having to fight against the men in their lives... and they watched it all go up in flames so quickly due to the greed of men.
But that wasn’t what truly broke my heart. The worst part was how hard I can relate. That even now, hundreds of years later, how much as really changed?
We’ve come a long way as a society, but we still have so far to go.
