Happy Tuesday! It’s a sunshiny mid-80s type of day here. Hope it’s nice where you are too 😊 . Next week, an extraordinarily heart wrenching book will be coming out. Every Cloak Rolled in Blood by James Lee Burke was nothing like what I expected instead it was so much more. All about grief and loss and good versus evil, it’s an amazing tribute to Burke’s daughter who passed away in 2020. I felt like I was grieving along with the main character and Burke. Design can’t live outside the environment and so can’t we. There are no gaps, only event horizons followed by outcomes based on our decisions. And while the choice is up to every individual, these decisions impact everyone. It is part of the tangible experience of the world and cannot be denied. Everything is connected. Are we part of the solution or part of the problem? There is more solutions than problems. No more wasted time. No more wasted resources. No more waste. Designers should be part of the solution. This year I’ve created two fashion collections made of big and small of fabrics I had found. Some of the small scraps were big enough to make complete garments, no additional material sourcing needed. I will not launch the big collection this year because I feel there was enough noise and stuff to be seen already and it feels unneccessary to add to the pile. Even though I design consciously, with a zero waste design principle always on top of my mind, I decided to slow the product spilling even more. Every designer and brand should. It is time to rewire our connection to environment, it is time to rewire fashion as we knew it as kids.
