“Okay,” Detective Granger sighs opposite you, “Let’s try this again.”

Your knee bounces rapidly under the chrome metal table. If it weren't screwed to the floor it would surely rattle with your antsy movement. Your eyes fall to your lap, the dress you wore tattered with a mix of blood, dust and the smell of Joel’s aftershave. A smell you wish you had with his physicality.

“Please state your name for the record.” He asks. Again. From the moment they put you in cuffs, shoved you in the back of a cop car, and brought you up to the station, you had not uttered a word. Maybe you were scared, or maybe it was the principle of the fact. But the idea that Joel was a few rooms over – not at arm's length – it made you yearn for his touch. To be under the rough pads of his fingertips once more. Weather it be in a grimy motel room, or even the fucking Canary Club back in the cesspool of Boston. 

But you sighed, knowing you aren't going home anytime soon without giving them something. Joel told you to spin it. Tell them the truth with the twist he promised would work. Leave you unscathed. 

So you tell them your name. And then your occupation once they ask for that too; “Singer.�� 

The detective looks at his co-worker, raising his brow. He nods back at him, believing you. If only you could unleash the insults that curl and cinder at the tip of your tongue. 

“Okay,” Granger tips his head to the side in acknowledgement of the fact your answers are the truth. What leverage would you have to lie if the very thing you are about to spill is an ever so slight twisting of the truth?

You watch with unblinking eyes as he places a black and white picture upon the table, between you and his now folded hands, “Care to tell us who this is?” 

It’s Joel. You knew they knew that. They just need to confirm their suspicion for the record. For the jury. The court. Your impending trial. So you take a second to study it, hold back a smile at the very sight of his broad shoulders, his tarnishes, creased dress shirt that clings to him like a second skin you wish to ravish him off. Even in the stale air of an interrogation room, through the captured image of a blurred mugshot, he makes the fire in your loins kickstart. Memories of joyrides, money, sex, motel sheets and speakeasy rendezvous. 

You give them a nod, sitting back in your seat.

“Who is he?”

“It’s Joel Miller. ‘Says it right there.” You tap the mugshot with your index finger to prove a point, kissing your teeth with a smug smile. “Or can you pig’s not read?” Venom spills from your words like maroon wine from a shattered glass. 

Detective Granger bites his tongue, leaning forward over the table, hands grasping the lip of it as he stands up, knuckles bleached white under his own grip. 

“Don’t think I ain’t above sending you to a cell with a shiner to your pretty lil’ nose, Doll.” He glared. It didn't seep any deeper than skin though. Didn’t rattle your bones that way Joel’s voice would when he called you a pretty ditzy thing that one time. If he were here the detective's teeth would be splattered across the tile of the floor for saying that. Daring to call you what he did, turning it into something that made your lip curl in disgust. 

“Oh, I'm sorry, Mr, Detective.” You pouted, tilting your head at him, doe eyed, sarcastic innocence wrapped around your tongue’s words.

His fist descended down upon the table with a slam, making you flinch. Much to your own dismay. “Just answer the damn question!” 

“Was he your boyfriend?” 

“No.”

Joel was no mere boyfriend. 

He was your lover. Your life. Your glue that mended cracks seen by no other. The man that undressed you and wrapped you up in his warmth. His Texan drawl. Unravelled you between your thighs. Made you lust for anything he did. He was air in your lungs, the smell of cedarwood and musk. Metallic blood on your collarbone and gravel under a cars worn in tires. He was the leather of your car seat. The Egyptian cotton of your sheets. 

But this was where the lie began…

“He was my jailor.” 

Detective Granger’s eyes narrowed as he looked down at you, your eyes finding him behind the wisp of your lashes. The glassy shine of a tear slipping from your waterline. He furrowed his brow, his thin lips pressing into a thin line below his bushy moustache that curled at the ends. The nostrils of his bulbous nose flared and his jaw ticked under the clenching of his teeth. Once more, you looked into your lap at your folded hands.

He sighed once more, adjusting his grey suit trousers to sit down, holding his tie to his beer belly as he did so. “Can you tell us what happened? Leading up to the crime?” His voice was softer and he winced at the sound of your sniff. How you were so timid all of a sudden like a deer in headlights. 

You nodded, swallowing your own saliva, the walls of your oesophagus grating together like coarse sandpaper. And then you spoke. “I met him when I was living in Boston.”

Commandant Noir and Chrome Headcanons.

Lee and Kamui set the precedent for romantic relationships. They all start off not being able to comprehend the concept of romantic love, much less intimacy. Lee still says he can't comprehend love, despite his willingness to die for his boyfriend. But his blossoming relationship with Kamui guides Chrome and Noir.

Noir gave up on finding a partner because he feels as though he left his family to die, and his mother programmed him to believe he's unworthy of love. The idea of having a romantic relationship evaded Chrome because of his life as a Construct in an apocalyptic world.

But once they see how deeply in love Lee and Kamui are, the two of them carefully but happily approach the idea of being something more than friends. They're kind to each other. They're open, honest and sweet towards each other.

Noir and Chrome are just as much in love as Lee and Kamui. If a grump like Lee can be an incredibly sweet boyfriend, then Noir figures he can at least try to be one to Chrome.

Who confesses first? Chrome.

Who kisses first? Noir. Kisses Chrome for the first time during a battle, seeing a gravely wounded Chrome fall

Who's the most romantic? They're both equally clumsy doofs that dote on each other.

Commandant Noir HCs: Two Problems and a Triangle.

So despite beginning a relationship with Chrome, Noir always finds himself flustered around Watanabe. Being anywhere near him for more than five minutes is impossible.

Thinking there's negative friction between them, Lucia sets up Noir and Watanabe on an errand.

Noir: (stumbles into Watanabe) Whoa, hey, Watanabe! Not tryin' t'rhyme or nothin' with yer name-how's it goin'? Ready fer some shoppin'?

Watanabe: (burns holes into Noir's skull)

Noir: (nervously, through gritted teeth) Great, just fuckin' great! (burns holes into Lucia's skull) Thanks a lot, sis!

Lucia: (warmly) You're welcome, Commandant. Please let us know if you require any assistance.

It is during this errand Noir realizes something. While he cares deeply for Chrome, he's definitely in love with Watanabe.

Not knowing how to handle being in love with two people, let alone one, Commandant Noir reaches out to someone for guidance. And that someone is:

There are dreams he cannot explain. Frequent in their wish to appear in the shape of constant fragments, akin to seeing between crystal shards that have been exposed to multi-chrome light. Beautiful, but sharp; magnificent, but honed. Maybe this is one of the reasons why he refuses to sleep --- because, as the illusion widens itself, the sting in his chest broadens as well and he doesn't even know why. Like an invisible stab, twisting and turning amid a search for the vast untold. He sees pictures of royalty; illusions of people in historic times, walking and bending their bodies as soon as the King is found. Then the setting changes, it suddenly spins and translates into the symptom of death. Noir, obscure; personified. All of these things, what do they mean? All of these dreams, can they even be called in such way, or are they deemed nightmares, whenever his neck feels the thunder of his heart?

Hyuk doesn't know if he should tell her. Standing here, in the middle of soft breeze and warm sun. Here, amid a tranquility that could be ruined if these sporadic preoccupations flourish out of his mouth. He doesn't know if he should tell her, that ever since those cards were placed upon the table, the thoughts of diverse dimensions keep appearing in his head, as if fateful.

But she knows already, doesn't she? Not the particularities of his worries, but the fact that he's not being like himself. At this point, she's the only one who's able to determine the minimal changes upon his countenance; a fond observer. She knows, because he doesn't have to say anything for her to speak, for her to spill words that express utter reassurance which is more welcome than neglected.

A rarity spreads upon lips -- a close-lipped smile, dedicated to her support. Darlene, having her own boat crowded with intricacies and yet, finding the time to spread a helping hand toward him. He can't help but do the very same, take her fingers and intertwine them with his to offer reciprocation, figuratively so, as the thought of this pillar they both hold together.

"I'm sure we will."

What, exactly? He doesn't know. Even his worries seem so scattered, so senseless. However, he's certain she'll be there. He trusts this, trusts her. Hyuk realizes, that they're not on different boats but on the same one; sharing cargo that's both precious and daunting. And he appreciates this, he appreciates that they're on this trip together, regardless of difficulties; regardless of boulders. This is what having a friend feels like. This is what having a confidant feels like.

Saying that there’s not a lot of new cyberpunk that really meshes with the actual themes of the original writing movement shouldn’t be surprising - there are a lot of dead and zombie genres. Noir could be made in this environment (and cyberpunk borrows heavily from noir elements) but most stuff that’s made right now will be contemporary fiction with a noir veneer.

A call back to a genre - that’s genre necromancy. We can speak to it and ask it questions, but rarely to we actually produce something that’s actually the thing. Westerns are one of those genres. You’re probably not going to get many actual westerns now. Sometimes you will - Deadwood is probably a pretty good example - but it’s not typically produced because old genres are an embodiment of old themes that are less resonant in the now. Cyberpunk can be resurrected badly pretty easily - its strong aesthetic and gen x/older millennial nostalgia do a lot of the heavy lifting, and we can easily slot in our critiques of capitalism into half-baked work because we’re seeing a resurgence in similar economic issues - but most people writing it haven’t given it a lot of thought and don’t need to. Slap some motherfuckin’ neon and chrome, and engage in a little of the old ultraviolence, and you're all set.

The interesting bit is that the very commodification of the rank aesthetic of a relatively exciting literary movement for quick consumption in a decaying economy with a culture that’s heavily mediated by a perfectly overlapping commercialized digital environment is itself extremely cyberpunk but the very works created in this environment to call upon that fail to be able to do it justice.

Noir's comfort foods are sweet and savory foods. If it has anything to do with alfredo sauce, curries or pastries, it has his name all over it. Kamui bakes frosted pumpkin cookies and he's the first to try one, as soon as they come out of the oven. Nanami comments on how 'Commandant jumped on them before they even cooled off'.

This results in Noir constantly asking Kamui: 'Got any more of those cookies?'. You can find him nibbling on them during team conversations.

Cue Gray Raven having an important conversation regarding an especially fearsome Corrupted. Liv notices someone crunching on something and giggles because it's Noir eating Kamui's cookies. noir: 'oops. my bad.'

Can he cook anything? He taught himself how to boil rice and can make a simple chicken noodle soup, but that's it. He taught himself those things as a way to cope with negligent, sometimes absent parents.

He eagerly takes lessons on how to bake from Kamui, alongside Nanami. He associates cooking with poverty and abusive parents, but finds baking a great deal of fun.

What little things do they notice? Noir finds little ticks in the Constructs adorable, like Lee's habit of wringing his wrists when he's annoyed, or Chrome pouting like a puppy whenever he's frustrated. He loves it when Kamui's eyes shine over, well, everything, and loves how Karenina challenges Lucia to duels over, well, everything.

Noir also gets a kick out of Watanabe. He loves how Watanabe acts like a cold-hearted grump, but is obviously the father figure he never had. Noir even calls him 'Pops' once. He immediately apologizes, but Watanabe doesn't reprimand him.

What treasures make Noir happy? Kamui's mere presence, Chrome's presence, Nanami's presence and pretty much just being around everyone. Noir feels a gaping chasm of loneliness and sadness at night, because he's alone. His friends keep him calm and warm.
