notes: this is for day four of @analogicalweek! the prompt of the day is “alternate universe” and i have decided to write a "i think my dog likes your dog” au, based off the introduction of anita and roger in 101 dalmatians! please enjoy!

Logan would have named his dog Tesla if the name had not already become popular due to the brand and if he did not have a deep-seated dislike of Elon Musk, but as it has, and as he does, his dog’s name is Nikola instead. He had finally given in and adopted her after his brother, Patton, had been wheedling him to adopt or foster one of the animals for years from the shelter he serves as veterinarian.

Nikola is a very intelligent dog. In the two-and-a-half years he has had her since she was a puppy, he has taught her a variety of tricks—the usual things, like sit, shake, stay, but also more unusual tricks like fetching him water bottles or tissues or any number of things that she knows the name of and is within her reach. She is a mix of two intelligent breeds—rottweiler and German shepherd—and as such learning and practicing tricks helps keep her from being bored. 

She has a surplus of enrichment toys. She never rips up shoes or furniture. She keeps an obedient trot at his side on hikes and runs ahead if he tells her to. She waits after he throws something for her to fetch until he says to run, and she has learned to sit before they cross the street. She is a very well-trained dog. 

Which is why it is so surprising when, as soon as he crouches to unleash her at the dog park they go to on Sundays, weather permitting, she snatches his baseball cap meant to keep the spring sun out of his eyes, and goes running off as if he has told her to fetch a tennis ball.

“Nikola!” He calls, out of being startled more than anything, before he starts to jog after her.

Nikola runs, just a black-and-brown streak of fur with the navy blue of his cap clamped between her teeth, and Logan is really quite fortunate that he spends most Saturdays, weather permitting, hiking, and weekday mornings on jogs besides. This habit has kept him in shape, however, it has also contributed to keeping Nikola in shape, and as such she is a very fast and athletic dog. He wonders briefly if he’ll catch her before he makes too much a fool of himself.

But just as suddenly as she’d started running, she stops at one of the benches installed around the dog park, dropping his cap on the bench and then immediately moving to the dog sitting beside her owner, Nikola wagging her tail and panting and looking quite pleased with herself, with eyes only for the other dog. The other dog, all black excepting the white splotch on her chest, looks at Nikola curiously, but does not crouch in a playful posture or otherwise react.

“Nikola, really,” he scolds, picking up his cap and jamming it back on his head. Then he looks to the man sitting on the bench with the dog that Nikola now seems enamored with, intent on apologizing for disturbing him or his dog, but his mouth goes dry almost immediately.

The man with the dog sitting calmly at his side is very handsome. 

He’s brown-skinned and black-haired—he’s Latino, Logan thinks—and in the middle of reading a book. Logan isn’t sure what book, based on the way his hands are placed, his long, elegant fingers covering the title. He’s also listening to music, as evidenced by the white wireless earbuds placed in his ears.

It’s likely that Nikola’s tomfoolery hasn’t disturbed him at all. The man only gives Logan a look—his eyes, which are a stunning shade of brown so dark they’re practically black—and returns his attention to his novel.

Logan clears his throat awkwardly, jams his cap back on his head, and turns to Nikola, who is still trotting around them, seeming very pleased with herself, wagging her tail, looking every inch a pompous showdog.

Sometime in the middle of watching Nikola, the exceptionally handsome man has closed his book and stood up, and Logan tries his best not to pay him any mind as he walks away.

“Helena, come,” he says, with a deep, lovely voice that hits Logan somewhere in the sternum. He has an accent—Spanish, maybe? Portuguese? Logan isn’t very familiar with romantic languages outside of English, other than the Latin he took throughout high school and college. Nikola is still looking very excited, but the black dog—Helena—stands and follows after the man.

“Nikola, really,” he repeats weakly, and crouches before her, gathering her leash in hand and preparing to let her loose so they can, perhaps, play a game of fetch, or something that does not involve Logan running after her like a madman.

But of course not. Whatever mood Nikola’s in persists, as she suddenly pulls forward, forcing Logan to get up off the ground lest he be dragged in her wake, and he really does not want to be dragged along the ground at the dog park, so he does, scrambling after her and trying to regain his balance.

He doesn’t notice she’s looping her leash around the man’s knees until it’s too late.

Which brings him to notice that she is also backtracking to loop around his knees.

He cannot help but notice when Nikola pulls tight and it brings Logan and the man colliding forcefully, chest-to-chest.

“Oh!” The man grunts. His chest is warm and broad. Logan would quite like to curl up under a nearby rock and never come out and also, if Nikola understood human terms, she would be so grounded. As it is he is absolutely revoking treats for her behavior today, even if the man is now putting a hand on Logan’s shoulder and it radiates warmth through his shirt.

“I beg your pardon,” Logan splutters, “I’m so sorry, please excuse me, I’ve no idea what’s gotten into her—”

At the same time, the man is saying “What the hell, oh my God, what—” and trying to push them apart, Logan stumbling with it.

Which makes the man stumble, which makes Logan stumble a little more, and very suddenly, they’re overbalancing, and Logan lands on top of him, the man wheezing as his back meets the ground, surely knocking the wind out of him. Even with that, he puts a hand at Logan’s waist to keep him from falling off of him into the dirt.

“I’m so sorry,” Logan gasps, and looks over—Nikola and Helena are side by side, Helena still haughty, Nikola still seeming very self-congratulatory.

“Nikola, bad girl,” he scolds. She doesn’t even have the decency to look chastened. “I swear she’s never like this, I really am so sorry—”

Logan manages to loosen the leash from around their knees and rolls off the man, apologizing all the while.

The man manages to sit up, eyes wide, and promptly Helena comes trotting over to him, leaning heavily into his side. 

“Uh, that’s,” the man coughs, “that’s okay. It—it wasn’t your fault. Um.”

He threads his fingers throughout Helena’s long fur, and Logan whistles sharply. Nikola at least has the good sense to return to his side.

“I am very sorry,” he repeats and stands, offering a hand to the man. The man hesitates before he releases Helena and takes it, allowing Logan to pull him to his feet.

Logan picks up the book—oh, he’s handsome and he has good taste, too, he’s reading On Beauty by Zaydie Smith, of course he had to go and look like an absolute buffoon in front of him—and holding it out for him.

The man takes his book back, eyes wide, before he looks to the dogs.

And then, of all the things to do, he starts to laugh.

Logan looks, too, and he feels his face crack into a grin.

Nikola is wagging her tail eagerly, staring at Helena, and Helena, at last, seems to look back at her. Her tail, almost grudgingly, starts to wag, too.

“I think your dog has a crush on my dog,” the man says, amused.

“I can’t deny that observation,” Logan admits. Sure, Nikola will play with other dogs, but she’s never been so sweet to another dog before. Even if he is irritated with her for running off, he can’t quite hold onto his sense of annoyance as Nikola makes doe-eyes at Helena.

“Like a regular Romeo,” the man says, then makes a face. “No, scratch that. Um—”

“She’d be a Juliet, regardless,” Logan interrupts.

He relaxes his shoulders. “Good. Romeo’s overused.”

He catches Logan’s confused eye, and explains, “My brother’s name is Roman. He crushes on people a lot. It was an easy joke growing up.”

“Ah,” Logan says, waits a beat, before he says, “It’s odd I know your dog’s name and your brother’s name before I know yours?”

“I have another brother named Remus,” he offers. “And, now that you know my family tree except me, I’m Virgil.”

“Well, I have a brother named Patton, and a brother-in-law named Janus,” Logan says. “I’m Logan.”

Virgil’s brow crinkles up. “Not Janus Ophidian?”

“The same,” Logan says.

“Small world,” Virgil says thoughtfully. “He’s a pain in my ass.”

He immediately blushes, as if he did not mean to say that, but Logan laughs before he can stop himself. Virgil blushes deeper.

“Uh, sorry,” Virgil says. “Sorry, he’s your—”

“No, you’re quite right,” Logan says affably. “He is a pain in the ass, he’d be proud to hear you say it. How do you know him?”

“Coworkers, of a sort,” Virgil says.

“So you’re a lawyer?” Logan says curiously.

“No,” Virgil says. “He’s in immigration law, right?”

“Correct.”

“I’m a translator,” Virgil says. “They hire me on retainer, sometimes, for clients who speak Spanish or Portuguese and not as much English. Or Catalan, or Aromanian, or Asturian, but those are way less common.”

“Interesting,” Logan says. “You’re a polyglot?”

“Six languages fluently, and three enough to make conversation,” Virgil says, then, “Aw, look at that.”

Nikola is nosing at Helena, and, after waiting a moment, Helena noses her back, their muzzles pressing together in a facsimile of a kiss.

“Well,” Logan says, unsure of what to really say to that, because it really is quite adorable. Then, “I suppose they’d like to spend time together. Would you like to sit back down on the bench to talk?”

Virgil smiles at him, more a quirk of his mouth than anything, and Logan’s heart flutters in his chest.

Please be single, please be single, he prays to no one in particular as they sit down together.

“So, what do you do for a living?” Virgil asks, ensuring that he has marked the page (his bookmark advertises for a small, local independent bookshop) and closing it, setting it aside.

“Oh,” Logan says, then, because his actual job title is quite long and unwieldy, he says, “I’m an astrochemist.”

“An astrochemist,” Virgil repeats, sounding intrigued. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that. What do you do all day?”

Logan brightens. “Well,” he begins, and off he goes.

He knows he can be something of a rambler, especially when it comes to topics he’s passionate about, and especially when it comes to astrochemistry, a combination of his two most favorite scientific disciplines of study. It only takes someone five minutes of listening to him ramble to discover he’s passionate about his work and the discoveries they make.

But he can’t help it. It’s the best thing in the universe, what he gets to do—use radio telescopes to detect the electromagnetic radiation that’s given off by objects in space, establishing what substances are in space and in what quantities, which can potentially come to tell the story of how the universe was made. 

He gestures frequently with his hands, his voice rising in volume as he talks about the significance of his work, the knowledge he’s helped discover, the theories they have. He sweeps a wide, expansive gesture to the sky, and points in the approximate direction of the various planets and stars of study. All the while, Helena and Nikola move to chase each other in circles, and all the while, Virgil alternates between watching the dogs with a soft look, and then looking back to Logan with genuine interest shining in his eyes, along with something Logan can’t quite name—well, he did just meet this man, he supposes that isn’t unreasonable.

Whatever the look is, though, it increases the excitement of lecturing about something he loves to someone who wants to learn, something in his stomach fluttering, his heart beating loud in his ears.

He’s about to start explaining the use use theoretical models as well as computer visualizations to help them explain their observations in terms of known physical and chemical principles, and how it helps them study the origins of extraterrestrial bodies and the chemical processes that have shaped their present forms when he stops, abruptly aware of how long he has been talking.

“Goodness,” Logan says, suddenly shy, pushing his glasses up his nose. “I’m so sorry, I’ve just talked away a good portion of your afternoon. Um. That’s the—that’s the sum of what I do on a daily basis. Which is what you asked.”

Virgil has that same quirk to his mouth as before, and that look in his eyes that had made Logan so eager in the first place.

“I don’t mind,” he says, and scratches at the back of his neck. “Um, I don’t drink coffee, ‘cause I have anxiety—Helena’s my emotional support dog, actually—”

Her stillness and calmness at the start of the whole debacle makes sense, then.

“—but, um. There’s a café nearby with outdoor seating, would you wanna maybe go... get a cup of marriage?”

Logan blinks at him, mouth agape.

“Excuse me?” He manages to squeak out.

Virgil blinks right back.

“Tea?” He clarifies, as if he was unsure if Logan heard him over the sound of other dogs and humans in the park. Goodness, there’s other dogs and people in the park, when did that happen? When did it get so crowded? “Would you want to maybe go get a cup of tea?”

“You,” Logan says, certain that his face is flaming red. “You said marriage.”

Virgil blushes then. He opens and closes his mouth a couple times, and at last he says, “Marriage?”

“Yes,” Logan says. “You—you said marriage. I mean, you meant to say tea, but it—it came out marriage.”

Virgil’s brow furrows. He thinks for a few moments. Then it seems to click, and he buries his face into his hands.

“Oh, God, I’m so sorry,” Virgil groans. “It was nice to meet you and you’re very attractive and also you were so excited about your work so I have started liking you in a friendly way but also in a I’d like to date you way but I just proposed marriage barely an hour after we met, so I’m going to go fling myself into the creek so I never have to see you again, I can’t believe I said that.”

Helena has untangled herself from Nikola and is currently butting up against Virgil’s shins, seemingly in an attempt to get him to calm down.

“No! No,” Logan says hastily. “No. Oh, please don’t do that, um. Tea sounds great. Tea sounds lovely. I also think you’re very attractive and like you in both a friendly and romantic sense!”

Virgil peeks out from between his fingers. “Really?”

“Really,” Logan promises. “In fact, would you like to go get a cup of tea with me? Right now? As a date?”

Virgil grins at him weakly. “I guess a date sounds more reasonable than marriage right off the bat, doesn’t it?”

Logan smiles back at him, as encouragingly as he can. “It does. I’d like to go on a date with you.”

Virgil’s grin strengthens. “Great! Okay. Okay. Um—follow me, then?”

They both pause to leash their dogs, sharing a bashful smile with each other, and Logan follows Virgil and Helena to the gate of the dog park.

Nikola’s strange sense of mischief has worn off; she’s trotting obediently at his side again. To think, he’d thought Nikola had just caused all this trouble for nothing, and now he’s going on a date with a handsome, intelligent man. 

He sneaks her a treat as they exit the park, on the way to the café just down the street.

ISLAM 101: Muslim Culture and Character: IDEAL GENERATIONS

On the eve of the beautiful days of the future, days whose dawns are breathing festivities, it is clear that we face crises that seem insurmountable. Like social troubles, national problems, and natural disasters, the crises that besiege a society cannot be overcome or resolved by mundane measures. Solutions for such crises depend on insight, knowledge, and wisdom becoming widespread. It is of no use—indeed, it is a mere waste of time—to try to solve such crises with aimless, limited, unpromising policies that are like mundane political maneuvers. From the past to the present, people of spirit, essence, and insight have resolved the commonest and most widespread depressions and crises with their immense horizons and zeal with unimaginable ease by using and activating the present day sources of power for the future. Some laypeople suppose that their own ingenious measures are superhuman and have admired and marveled at them as such. However, all they are doing, like all other successful people, is to use fully and efficiently the capacity, talents, and opportunities granted them by Almighty God.

People of discernment are always, in all their acts and manners, busy and preoccupied with plans and projects for today and tomorrow; they use all they have and all possibilities and opportunities as material to build the bridge to cross over to the future; and they always feel the pain and distress of carrying today onto tomorrow; to resolve the problems depends, to a certain extent, on overcoming or passing over the present time, and in fact being beyond time. That is, being able to see, foresee, and evaluate today and tomorrow in the same way. You can call such scope of thought, which entails embracing tomorrow from today and comprehending the future’s spirit and essence and content, an “ideal,” if you so wish. One who does not have such a horizon can neither overcome a multitude of problems nor promise anything for tomorrow. Even though some simple people have assumed great proportions like these, the pomp, circumstance, and magnificence of the Pharaohs, Nimrods, Caesars, and Napoleons, their noisy and hectic lives, which bedazzled so many, never became, and can never become, promising for the future in any way. For those people were the poor, the wretched, who subjugated truth to the command of might, who always sought social ties and congruity around self-interest and profit, and who lived their lives as slaves, never accepting freedom from spite, selfishness, and sensuality.

In contrast, first the Four Rightly-Guided Caliphs and later the Ottomans presented such great works, whose consequences exceed this world and reach to the next, that these works are in essence able to compete with the centuries; of course, only for those who are not beguiled by temporary eclipses. Although they lived their lives and duties fully and passed away, they will always be remembered, talked of, and find a place in our hearts as the good and the admirable. In every corner of our country, the spirit and essence of such people as Alparslan, Meliksah, Osman Gazi, Fatih, and many others, waft like the scent of incense, and hopes and glad tidings flow into our spirits from their vision.

Caesar trampled down the ideal of Rome with his whims and desires; Napoleon imprisoned and killed the ideal of Great France in the net of his greed and ambitions; and Hitler consumed the aim of Great Germany with his rash madness. On the other hand, the ideal, which is open to continuity, of our people, whose heroism expresses integrity and continuousness, has always been held high and above all meanness or vulgarity, whether in victory or defeat; it is held dear, beloved, sacred, and highly esteemed, like a banner for whose sake lives are given. Under such a banner, Fatih walked through Constantinople, Süleyman the Magnificent advanced in the West, and our people during the First World War and the National War, for another time, maintained their loyalty and gave their lives for the understanding that the banner must wave so forever.

An ideal in the hands of an ideal man reaches the most elevated values and turns into the charm of victory and accomplishment. If the people who represent such an ideal are not the correct people for the task, then that banner or standard turns into a pennant under which common low whims and ambitions are expressed. Although such a pennant is able to bring together the children in the street, driving them to strike the targets, as if in a game, it is not capable of realizing the emotions and aspirations that reside in the depths of the souls of our people.

A person of ideals is, first of all, a hero of love, who loves God, the Almighty Creator devotedly and feels a deep interest in the whole of creation under the wings of that love, who embraces everything and everybody with compassion, filled with an attachment to the country and people; they care for children as the buds of the future, they advise the young to become people of ideals, giving them high aims and targets, who honors the old with wholehearted regard and esteem, who develops bridges over the abysses to connect and unite the different sections of society, and who exerts all their efforts to polish thoroughly whatever may already exist of harmony between people.

A true person of ideals is also a person of wisdom. While observing everything from the comprehensive realm of reason, they also assess everything with the measures of their appreciative heart, testing them through the criteria of self-criticism and self-supervision, kneading and forming them in the crucible of reason, and always trying to possess and take further the radiance of the mind and the light of the heart in equal harness.

A person of ideals is a true example of responsibility to the society in which they live. To reach their targets, the first of which is, of course, the pleasure of their Creator, they sacrifice everything that God has bestowed on them, without giving the matter a second thought; they have no fear or concern for anything worldly, their heart is captivated by nothing other than God; they have neither ambition for individual happiness nor worry about unhappiness; they are a savior, a hero of the spirit, they do not mind being in hellfire, so long as their ideals and their country are everlastingly firm, stable, and permanent.

A person of ideals and high standing feels respect for the values they are attached to with profound self-supervision, performing their duties in the exhilaration of worship, and living as a hero of love and enthusiasm. Agreeing with and abiding by the truth with minutely meticulous sensitivity they always exercise their preference for sublime ideals. They are always in a struggle in the depths of their heart, a struggle to be the master of their self at all times; they have been sentenced to being a slave to the truth, they are disinterested and indifferent to positions and titles, and they see fame, covetousness, and fondness of comfort and ease as a fatal poison. That is why such people always win where they have an opportunity to win and turn unfavorable circumstances to their advantage.

Walking on this path along with the glorious spirits, such a person is so sincerely devoted to the Will of God that the storms of ambitions which hit them intensify and consolidate their sense of right, justice, and right-mindedness; floods of hatred, grudge, and malice enthuse the springs of love and compassion in their soul; they ignore and tread upon the gifts and blessings that ordinary people are caught up with and they oppose retaliation. If we are to think of such heroes of ideals at their true horizon, a place which perplexes the mind, then we are able to picture a person with an almost prophet-like resoluteness; superhuman pictures flow into our feelings from the doors which have been opened by these associations, and our house of imagination overflows with historical examples of heroism. Thus, are we enthralled by the loyalty and sincerity of Uqba ibn Nafi in the African deserts, enraptured by the bravery and intrepidity of Tariq ibn Ziyad after crossing Gibraltar, lost in admiration of Fatih (Mehmed II) and his resolution, entranced by Gazi Osman Pasha in Plevne, and we salute with reverence the lions of Gallipoli on whose heads bombs and shells were showered and who faced onslaught with a smile on their face.

We do not need anything else but exemplary people of high character and ideals. These exalted souls of the highest ideals will realize the re-establishment of our nation in the coming years. These heroic people, the yeast of whose existence is faith, love, wisdom, and insight, have not yielded to or been shaken by the numerous attacks that came from within and without over almost ten centuries. Perhaps they have shrunk a bit and become a little smaller. However, by acquiring some strength and firmness, they have come to a level where they can settle their accounts with the future, and have observed the age and bided their time to take over the duty with an extraordinary power of spirit.

It is a fact that over the last few ages, love, wisdom, insight, and the consciousness of responsibility have shrunk and simple daily matters have replaced the great ideals. Of course, it is not possible to say that we have done nothing in the name of reform within that period. However, the things put forward remain nothing more than low mimicry and sound effects. Such blind imitation, as a disguise for the introduction of vice and immorality into the thought of the nation, and as a means that leads to the destruction of its spirit, has brought about more harm than good. When the nation was bleeding from the injuries inflicted, one after another, on community’s stamina, the real problem was not diagnosed, the way to cure and treat it was not known or defined, and incorrect treatment and meddling caused the masses to be paralyzed. The effects of the crises of the last few ages are still making themselves felt today in flares, eruptions, and centrifugal outbursts of rage.

Therefore, just like before, if we do not deal with the true causes of the problems, if we do not approach and treat individual, familial, and social problems with the ability, sensitivity, and skill of surgeons, if we are not saved from the swamp of vice, immorality, and filthy affairs and dealings from which we have been struggling to extricate ourselves for the last few ages, we will run into errors, one after the other, while looking for remedies; our crises will get much worse and deepen, and we will never be relieved from the vicious circle of crises and depressions.

It doesn’t matter if those who hold the reins continue in their age-old obstinacy. We have deep absolute trust in the ideal generations whose thoughts, feelings, and actions turn to the future, who are attached and devoted to their country, people, and ideals, who are focused to serve and contribute to people, indeed to all of humanity, who are taut and ready to be released, like the string of a bow, to serve all with the understanding and consciousness of responsibility. We trust that they will tackle and overcome all negativity and make the newest developments come true. One day, their strong desires and wishes, their love and longing to serve people will penetrate into all sections of society and will turn into seeds that flourish wherever they fall. This approach, which will eradicate the so-called realities of materialism and corporeality, will certainly embroider once more the canvas of its spirit with its own worldview and plan of action.

The Vindictives: The Many Moods of... ( Side D )

The Vindictives are probably one of the best and most underrated of the 90s pop punk bands to call Chicago home. They began in 1990, after Joey’s first band, Vicktimz of Society called it quits. Their original lineup included Joey Vindictive (vocals), Johnny Personality (bass), Ben Weasel (of Screeching Weasel fame on guitar), Dr. Bob (guitar), and Erik Elsewhere (drums). The band would quickly experience lineup changes and evolve in complexity as well. The band would end up releasing 12 EPs and albums until July 1996, when Joey Vindictive revealed that his health issues would prevent the band from going on. The band DID continue past that but never at the capacity and intensity it had been previously. The distinction between The Vindictives and other pop punk bands of the same cloth is all in the lyrics. Often sexual or paranoia themes (sometimes both!) took center stage. And those amazing and layered harmonies!! No one did it better than The Vindictives. You got a real sense of the frantic-ness though in the music and the production was outstanding. Every song is catchy and holds your attention, making each song just a little different. Something pop punk is not often known for often, embracing the repetitiveness. So this “album” is really one of their only proper ones but it’s more or less a collection of all the aforementioned EPs. “Future Homemakers of America” Starts the party off right. Meaty and punchy with those dripping snotty vocals. Not perfect and that’s OK. It’s part of the energy, and a real slap across the face of suburbia stay at home housewives everywhere. “Spring Valley Shopping Mall” Tell the tale of what sounds like a really bad date. Literally a story in the form of a song. “1 (900) ILU-VYOU” is a dominatrix tune that features those amazing backing vocal harmonies. You could say they DOMINATE (#seewhatididthere) at it. Next up is “Basketcase”-a quickie punker rocket with driving and screaming leads. It’s better than Green Day’s version. Just kidding, totally different songs, but Green Day does serve as a good comparison for production value and tight melodies. Speaking of tight,

“You Know Who You Are” follows suit and punches you in the face. All while bitting and clawing your eyes out. Wound up like a spring and ready to pounce. As if it couldn’t get any faster, “Impatient” flies at you at breakneck speeds. Vindictives are not usually Minor Threat level fast, but skatepunks be damned, these guys mean business! Thrashing lashes to make you gnash your teeth. Probably one of the best songs on this side, and best examples of how the Vindictives stand out is found in “...And The World Isn’t Flat Anymore”. It’s very catchy and sing along style, but still manages to employ one the band’s favorite tricks, vocals in the round. Joey understands how to make one set bleed into the other and it sounds so amazing. More vocal layers than a 7 layer burrito! His raw and unabashed outlook give that darker edge the band uses to their advantage. Ironically these are probably some of the weaker tunes in their arsenal, so just imagine how awesome Sides A-C are! Brilliant!

The Mary Jane Girls: Only Four You ( Side 1 )

The Mary Jane Girls are an American R&B, soul and funk group that gained popularity in the 1980s. They were protégées of singer Rick James. Much like Prince had Shiela E and others, Rick James has his girls too. They are known for their hit songs "In My House", "All Night Long", "Candy Man", and their cover version of "Walk Like a Man". Joanne "Jojo" McDuffie was the lead singer, the others filling out the group's style and appearance. According to the wiki, on the studio recordings, McDuffie was backed by session vocalists rather than the other Mary Jane Girls. The album credits the other members as each singing at least one song though. The Mary Jane Girls released two albums in the 1980s and recorded a third which was shelved for decades but finally released in 2014. They were inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2019. You can practically see the marketing plan-o-gram throughout, but you know what? The songs are fairly catchy. I like the 80s and even though it has distinct Motown and funk influence, there is a decent representation of new wave too. Rock actually wrote and produced all the songs too, so he had his hands all over it. Of course we should address the obvious. The name of the group referenced mary jane, slang for marijuana; a favored recreational drug of James. (James wrote a hit song titled "Mary Jane".) The group's image was styled as containing a street-wise girl (McDuffie), a supermodel (Ghant), a cheerleader/valley girl (Wells, then Marine), and a dominatrix (Wuletich). This is their second album and has the biggest hit, which starts off the whole thing. “In My House” has a VERY Rick James start with that keyboard intro, then drop the funky bass. These are 4 ladies that know the 80s. If disco were just watered down new wave, ala Lipps Inc., then I’d be ok with it. That’s pretty much what we have here. “Break it Up” is another funky dance club hit parade. Revolving Supremes-like vocals that keep your interest. The next 30 seconds are an interlude to the song “Shadow Lover” but they bothered to list it as a separate track, so...? It’s a saxophone meets piano warm up really, into the actual action. A slow bedroom jam that might make Luther Vandross jealous. The last track (only 4 you I guess #seewhatididthere ) is next. It’s called “Lonely for You” and the play on the album title is not lost on me. This one is back to the rockin’ beats. Mellow and melody. The underlying keyboard is fantastic on this cut. It’s a new wave version of En Vogue or a disco version on The Supremes. Either way, nice. I hope they didn’t have to do anything freaky to get their deal...(#seewhatididthere)

So today we saw the many moods of The Vindictives in full regalia. They took 16 minutes to burn 101 calories over 7 songs. That is 14.43 calories burned per song and 6.31 calories burned per minute. The Vindictives earned 18 out of 21 possible stars. The Mary Jane Girls did it only four you. They took 19 minutes to burn 116 calories over 4 songs. That’s an average of 29.p calories burned per song and 6.11 calories burned per minute. The MJG earned 8 out of 12 possible stars. Looks like The Vindictives will be in a haploid because they won today’s challenge!

A Second Decade of Movies

Ten years ago on Facebook, I compiled a list of every movie I watched, in order, from the first decade of the network’s existence. Now, here’s part two, covering the years 2010-2019. There are 754 titles below, though some are repeat viewings. The movie I watched the most? Harold Lloyd in “The Freshman.” My favorite movie from the last decade? “The Tree of Life.”

But I began the 2010s with James Cameron’s mega-hit “Avatar.” I’ll go on record saying the movie is still enjoyable ten years later, as I watched it again in 2019 with my kids to prep for visiting the World of Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But--I also agree with those who say there’s little remembered from the film in the culture today. Can you name the stars? Recount the plot in detail? Mostly what we remember from the film is the spectacle of it all, game-changing when it was released in 2009.

The Girl in the Bookstore

“Ok, ok, finally sending in a request cause I’d love to see how you have this relationship play out. What about if reader runs back into one of those girls from the grocery store and she badmouths Reader again, but this time, lo and behold, Billy is there? I’ll let you figure out the juicy details and you can totally interpret and take all the creative freedoms you want ;)”

You and Billy had just taken a walk in Central Park and were enjoying the spring air. It was finally warming up, the flowers beginning to bloom, and while the sun was out, there was a nice breeze. 

“You wanna go to that bookstore you’re always raving about?” Billy looked down at you with a smile. He was wearing a beanie and his leather jacket with his arm linked in yours. You loved seeing him on his off days. He was so much more relaxed and carefree.

“Yes, let’s do it. There’s this new novel that just came out and I want to get it.” You replied happily, practically skipping in step with Billy’s long strides. You were always happy to spend time with Billy. It was one thing for him to come over after work, or for you to see him after work, but it was nice to get out and do things together.

Walking down the street you took in the smell of the hot dog stand to your left and the flower shop to your right. It was a Saturday afternoon so the streets were busier than usual with people bumping into one another’s shoulders. 

You two made your way into the bookshop, with Billy opening the door for you and putting his hand on your lower back, stepping in behind you. Bookstores always made you feel rejuvenated. You were always excited to browse the various genres and take a look at the new releases. You discovered from your last trip to the bookstore with Billy that he was interested in classics and the history section. You’d always ended up leaving with at least 3 books and Billy with just one. By time you’d finished nearly all 3 of them, he would have just finished the one he got.

You two split up to look into the genres you wanted to browse. Your favourite author had a new release this week and you wanted to pick up a copy before leaving. You’d barely touched it before someone snapped it out of your grasp. “Um...” you slowly turned your head to see who the rude person was.

You immediately recognized her as one of the girls from the grocery store. The one who called you a “slut” and harassed you about Billy. You closed your eyes and sighed deeply. 

“Well, look who it is. Found out Billy is into girls who read, huh?” She smirked at you holding the book up in her hand. 

“I have to assume you don’t, if so. I’ll be taking that now,” you stood on your toes to try to reach it out of her hand. 

She’s so damn tall.

“Don’t think so. What even is this? ‘How To Get A Boyfriend’?” She barked and you made a sour face. 

“No, but maybe you should look into some self-help books, love,” you smiled and turned to the shelf to grab another copy as you walked away.

What a psycho.

You’d just spotted Billy in the history section browsing some titles when the girl nearly ran into you resulting in you bumping into Billy. “Jesus!” You shrieked as you dropped your book.

Billy bent down to pick up the book and handed it back to you with a frown, “You okay, princess?” As soon as the words left his mouth he spotted the woman behind you and his eyes went wide.

“Hey, Billy!” The girl plastered a ginormous fake smile as she patted her hair down. “It’s so good to see you again! It’s been a while, I haven’t heard from you...”

“Probably because I told you to back off, Vanessa.” His voice was stern and he stood in front of you now to face the woman. “Let me guess, you’re the one who called my girl a ‘slut’ while she was at the store?” He questioned placing his hands in his pocket.

You could see this Vanessa girl swallow and turn her head to look away from him. She reminded you of a bratty child. “Well, you told me she’s the bitch who broke your heart, so-”

“I never called her a bitch. I do recall telling you that I care about her and you storming off afterward, though,” he was smirking at her now and she was turning red from embarrassment. “So I’m going to let this slide, and you’re not going to talk shit about Y/N again. Got it?” 

She rolled her eyes and pouted as if she was being lectured by a parent. “We just had so many good times together, I thought-”

“Leave.” He narrowed his eyes at her and stood up straight, broadening his shoulders. You could hear the assertiveness in his tone and it made you cower behind him a bit more. “Now.” She threw the book you’d initially grabbed on the floor with a thud, and turned away. You heard the bell on the entrance door jingle as she closed the door on her way out. 

You were still standing behind Billy, eyes wide in shock that he stood up for you. “Sorry about that,” he turned to face you with a frown. “I figured she must’ve been the girl you told me about that night at your office party. She...grew a bit attached,” he shrugged watching your face.

“It’s fine, Billy. Thanks,” you offered a small smile before picking up the book she had thrown on the floor. “She damaged the cover,” you rolled your eyes as you went to place it back on the shelf and keeping the good one in your arms.

Billy followed you to the aisle before you turned back around to face him with a mischievous smile, “Actually...you think I can get a discount on this one?” You raised your brows holding the book with the dented cover and folded pages. 

He laughed shaking his head before grabbing the undamaged book from your hands. “I’ll pay for it.” You opened your mouth to argue before he began to walk to the register. “She called you a slut. It’s the least I can do.”

You scoffed and snatched the book from his hand before placing it on the register to pay for it yourself. “I’ll have you know I am a slut,” you whispered leaning back into him. He raised his brows at you and you winked, “for books.”

DISNEY CHANNEL:

- Amphibia (TBA):  Created and executive produced by Matt Braly (Gravity Falls), Amphibia chronicles the adventures of Anne Boonchuy, a self-centered 13-year-old who is magically transported to the fictitious world of Amphibia, a rural marshland full of frog-people. With the help of an excitable young frog named Sprig, Anne will transform into a hero and discover the first true friendship of her life.

The series was announced to be greenlit for production in early 2018 and is expected to premiere later in 2019.

- The Owl House (TBA):  Created and executive produced by Dana Terrace (DuckTales) is a horror-comedy series that follows Luz, a self-assured teenage human girl who accidentally stumbles upon a portal to the Demon Realm. There she befriends a rebellious witch, Eda, and an adorably tiny warrior, King. Despite not having magical abilities, Luz pursues her dream of becoming a witch by serving as Eda’s apprentice at the Owl House and ultimately finds a new family in an unlikely setting.

The series was announced at the same time as Amphibia and a Season 4 renewal of Star vs the Forces of Evil in early 2018. Similar to Amphibia, it is expected to release in late 2019.

- Vikingskool (end 2019): The series will follow a group of young would-be Viking warriors in an elite Vikingskool. Ross described the alumni as being “Like freshmen in ‘Top Gun,’ but for Vikings. ”The group will embark on a series of humorous and exciting adventures in a mystical world. At the heart of the tale are three best friends: Erik, Arnie and Ilba, each with their own unique Viking strengths and weaknesses.

The series is being produced by Ireland’s Cartoon Saloon (“The Secret of Kells,” “The Breadwinner”) and France’s Samka Productions (“Jamie’s Got Tentacles”) with post-production from Norwegian VFX company Storm Films. It’s this pedigree that prompted Ross to explain to Variety: “There is a substantial Viking history in Ireland and Northern France. As a co-production we can say it’s the only Viking show made by actual Vikings.” 

The series’ 26 half-hours are scheduled for broadcast at the end of 2019. 

- 101 Dalmatian Street (early 2019): Inspired by Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel and the 1961 movie, it will be based in Camden Town, London.

Featuring 43 cast members covering 106 speaking roles, the modern tale will focus on dalmatians Dylan and Dolly, their parents Doug and Delilah and 97 younger puppies whose names all also begin with D. Miriam Margolyes, known for her portrayal of Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter film series, will voice Bessie the Cornish Cow.American actors Josh Brener and Michaela Dietz will voice Dylan and Dolly, the eldest Dalmatian siblings. Rapper Ben Bailey Smith, also known as Doc Brown, will voice Sid Squirrel as well as Spencer Sausage Dog. The series will also feature EastEnders star Tameka Empson as Pearl Police Horse and Bethan Wright as Prunella Pug.

The series has premiered its first episode on Disney Channel Africa and is set to premiere on Disney Channel UK in January. It will premiere in the US in spring 2019.

NETFLIX:

- Pinky Malinky (January 1, 2019): Pinky Malinky is a brand-new fly-on-the-wall reality show that follows the everyday life of Pinky, an infectiously positive hot dog living in a human world. With his best friends Babs and JJ by his side, Pinky reaches for the stars in the small town of Sackenhack. Through his good spirits and sausage sensibilities, Pinky proves that a "wiener" is only one small letter away from being a "WINNER!"

Using the tropes of a mockumentary and reality show format, Pinky and his friends will talk directly to the camera and the audience to share their absurd and silly take on real life. At times, all children feel like they don't fit in and Pinky's undeniably unique point of view as a literal wiener amongst humans will allow kids to laugh at his familiar struggles and enjoy his unusual perspective on the challenges of being a school-aged kid. By always reaching for the stars, Pinky pushes himself further than anyone could imagine. Pinky and his friends' humorous experiences will also be shared across social media and Nickelodeon's digital platforms. Co-created and co-executive produced by Chris Garbutt and Rikke Asbjoern (The Amazing World of Gumball) and executive produced by Scott Kreamer (Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness), the trio are a part of the Artist Collective, an internal diverse group of experienced creators who mentor and support up-and-coming talent while also collaborating to cultivate, challenge and inspire Nickelodeon's development pipeline. Pinky Malinky will star Lucas Grabeel (Glenn Martin DDS, I Kissed A Vampire) as Pinky Malinky, Diamond White (The Haunted Hathaways) as Babs Buttman, and Nathan Kress (iCarly) as JJ Jameson. Under the deal with Netflix, Nickelodeon is producing two seasons — 59 episodes — of Pinky Malinky for the streaming service. The first season, consisting of 28 episodes is now available on Netflix.

- Tuca & Bertie (TBA): The series, which has received a 10-episode order, is an adult-oriented comedy about the friendship between two 30-year-old bird women who live in the same apartment building: Tuca (Haddish), a cocky, care-free toucan, and Bertie (Wong), an anxious, daydreaming songbird.

Both Haddish and Wong will also serve as executive producers in addition to starring. Lisa Hanawalt created the series and will serve as executive producer. Hanawalt is the production designer and producer on Netflix’s critically-acclaimed animated series “BoJack Horseman.” Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the creator of “BoJack” will also executive produce along with “BoJack” executive producers Noel Bright and Steven A. Cohen. Michael Eisner’s The Tornante Company, which produces “BoJack,” will produce. Animation is being done at Shadowmachine.

The series was announced to be in production in February 2018 and is set to release in the summer.

- Carmen Sandiego (January 18, 2019): Carmen Sandiego started as a video game in 1985 and ventured out into books, television, and comics. Children of the ‘90s have searched for Sandiego in the U.S.A., in Europe, in Space, and back in Time. The PBS animated series Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? ran for 295 episodes between 1991 and 1995. Author John Peel wrote 10 Carmen Sandiego books in the '90s. DC Comics published four issues of a Carmen Sandiego comic starting in June 1996.

Believe it or not, after more than two decades Sandiego, a notorious crook, is still on the loose. Can she outrun the Netflix binge watchers? We’ll have see if Rodriguez has what it takes.

Insiders say that Netflix has ordered 20 episodes of the series, which aims to be as educational as it is entertaining, given the title character’s globetrotting adventures. The series is set to release on Netflix on January 18, 2019.

- Cannon Busters (March 1, 2019):  Cannon Busters tells the story of a royal droid named S.A.M., who is searching for her best friend, and heir to the throne. Along the way, she’s joined by an old maintenance droid and a fugitive. The 12-episode series buy is part of Netflix’s impending wave of anime titles including Ultraman, Kengan Ashura, and season two of Aggretsuko.

Cannon Busters was created by LeSean Thomas, a storyboard artist and character designer known for his work on The Boondocks, the animated Black Dynamite series, and The Legend of Korra. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, Netflix has bought 12 episodes, adapted from a 2003 comic of the same title. 

The series was first announced at the Netflix panel at the 2018 Anime Expo and is set to release on Netflix on March 1, 2019.

 - Twelve Forever (TBA): The series centers on 12-year-old Reggie, whose desire to remain a child is so powerful it creates a fantasy world in which she never has to grow up. She’s joined by her friends Todd and Esther, who visit this amazing world to live out their superhero fantasies and escape the responsibilities of impending adulthood.

Production companies behind the series are the Cartel and Puny Entertainment. In addition to Vickerman, executive producers include the Cartel’s Stan Spry and Bradford Bricken, and Puny’s Chris Hardwick and Shadi Petosky.

The original pilot was first aired on Cartoon Network in 2015 and was not picked up by the network until Netflix was announced to have picked it up for a first season in December 2017 and is set to release sometime in 2019.

Musings of Online Activism, Wrestlers, Artists and Alien Entities

As a kid my favourite film maker was John Carpenter. His edgy work had a great deal of commercial success up to the mid-eighties, but it is one of his low budget offerings I think mostly of today. The film was adapted from a short story titled “Eight O’Clock in the Morning and Carpenter’s version released as “They Live”.

It starred a former wrestler with a memorable one-liner, but was dismissed as B grade. Despite this, appreciation has grown decades later (Rothkopf 2014). The plot was simple, the central character discovers activists using broadcast signals to convince the world hidden messages from aliens are within advertising, telling us to “obey”. A special set of sunglasses made the hidden messages and aliens visible, as you’ll see below.

They Live contained a hidden protest about the politics of the Reagan era (Alamo Drafthouse 2011) and images from the film have been used as a form of protest since, becoming part of Shepard Fairey’s culture jamming art. Culture jamming protests control by corporations using consumer objects, commercials, logos, or other symbols (Wettergren 2009, p.2).

When I watched the film again with my son, he asked why they didn’t just use the internet and we had a conversation about a mythical place called the eighties where there was no internet.

Author Clay Shirky describes the trend of emerging technology being used as a launch pad for activism around the globe (2011, pp.28-29). Internet users increased from 738 million in the year 2000 (Davidson, 2015) to 4.17 billion in 2018 (Statistica 2018). That’s around 55% of the World’s population.

Jericho (2013, pp.255-257) demonstrated the impacts of activism as a form of digital citizenship, using examples of the Arab Uprising, as well as Oscar Morales and his fight to stop Colombian revolutionaries that engaged in executions, kidnappings and more during civil conflict in Columbia (Brett 2003, pp.88-101).

Flew et al. (2012, pp.160-161) explains options for people engaging in public communication include citizen journalism or underground channels like Wikileaks.

Like wrestling, there is an argument that perhaps not all activism is genuine. Slactivism and clicktivism are terms for low-effort activism generating likes or clicks without engagement. An example was the copy and paste of letters or protests through social media (McCafferty 2011, pp.17-18). In an interview, Micah White (co-founder of the Occupy Wall Street movement) described activism as being turned into something similar to weekend entertainment (Funnell 2017).

Even culture jamming has been questioned, pondering what activism is when it starts to resemble the thing it was protesting against in the first place (Lewis 2013).

The mission for social movements has been made easier through social media, but appropriate use of the internet relating to activism is something we don’t hear of enough. Particularly, we need ensure signals aren’t blurred about whether online activism is aimed to achieve a social goal or something else entirely. Activism can be life or death for some in the world. Breaching law is a risk many activists take to bring attention to laws that were unfair in the first place as the internet opens channels to new cultures.

Fitzgerald Engineering & Const. Co. 1940 Contractors (Photo taken January 17, 2022 in the Picfair Village neighborhood of Los Angeles).

From 1933-1935, they were involved with tract maintenance, engineering, street improvements, water mains, gas mains, and houses for “the Hellman heirs” on “various subdivided tracts” (Reports of the U.S. Board of Tax Appeals, Volume 41, United States Board of Tax Appeals, U.S. Government Printing Office, 1940).

In 1937, Fitzgerald Engineering & Construction Company was located at 458 S. Spring St., Los Angeles (Western Construction News, p. 58, February, 1937). In the same year, he is listed as at the Rowan Building, unit 625. The Rowan Building was designed by noted Los Angeles architect John Parkinson.

Some contracts they were awarded was “for construction of a water distribution system in Las Flores Avenue in Arcadia, Calif.” and “for grading, paving, and a water distribution system in Tract 11,204, Arcadia,” both by the Title Insurance & Trust Co. of Los Angeles and possibly the same project. The same year they were also awarded a contract by the City Clerk of Arcadia for construction of a reinforced concrete box culvert on Duarte Road (Western Construction News, Volume 12, p. 60, King Publications, August, 1937).

In 1952, they were awarded the contract “for construction of the by-pass freight line which is to extend from Puente, Cal., on the SP main line, to the Santa Ana branch” and which “covers grading and construction of railroad between Whittier Junction and Firestone boulevard, at a cost of more than $200,000″ (”SP Awards First Contract for Los Angeles By-Pass,” Construction, Railway Age, Volume 133, Simmons-Boardman Publishing Company, 1952).

In 1959, they owned a test water well that had an altitude of 32 feet and a depth of 164 feet, with a diameter of eight inches (Poland, Joseph Fairfield; A. A. Garrett; Allen Sinnott. Geology, Hydrology, and Chemical Character of Ground Waters in the Torrance-Santa Monica Area, California, Issue 1461, p. 344, U.S. Government Printing Office, 1959).

I couldn’t conclusively determine which Fitzgerald is this one. It could be C. G. Fitzgerald, who was an officer of the Southern California Chapter of the Associated General Contractors (p. 29), but he is also listed as “C. G. Fitzgerald Company,” so that could be different from “Fitzgerald Engineering & Construction Company” or it could just be a different time. C.G. were the engineers for the Montebello Park Country Club, 1928 (Cook, Hall and Cornell were the landscape architects - Cornell being the famous Ralph D. Cornell) (Architect and Engineer, Volume 101, p. 69, 1930). In the plans for the country club, the G in FitzGerald is capitalized.

the judd foundation and dia earth room

In 1968, Judd purchased 101 Spring Street five-story building located on the corner of Spring Street and Mercer Street in Manhattan, New York City. It was the first building that Judd owned and it served as both his home and his studio space. It was in this building that Judd first came up with the idea of permanent installation pieces. Judd believed that the placement of a work of art was just as critical as the work itself, which is an idea that I also share. Judd’s installations of artworks and furniture create a balance between respect for the old cast-iron building and his new approaches to architecture and design. In his essay titled “101 Spring Street” he stated “I spent a great deal of time placing the art and a great deal designing the renovation in accordance. Everything from the first was intended to be thoroughly considered and to be permanent.”

The ground floor of the foundation was set up as a gallery space. In the space was Judd’s old paintings from before he ventured into creating sculptures. There was also a standing desk and large crates, there in order to prepare for a reopening showcase. On this floor was also large glass windows that looked out onto the streets of Manhattan. Due to these windows, I did not feel as though I was in a studio space nor a home. We soon ventured onto the second floor, which was a large informal dinning area and kitchen. On the far left wall there was the first of many permanent instillation pieces. A ceiling to floor fresco painting by David Novros. The colors and textures within this fresco fascinated me. I was drawn in by the purple and greens on the bottom, as well as the oranges at the top.  Other than this piece, secluded in the corner of the room, the rest of the floor had a home-like feel, with a kitchen, table, chairs and even a small bathroom.

Moving to the third floor was two large permanent installation pieces and a standing desk.  These pieces were made of metal and shaped like cubes, one being solid and another being hallow. While on this floor we discussed with the tour guide about the differences between sculpture and found objects. Judd hates being called a minimalist sculpture, though it is easy to see why he would be called so after viewing his works. We came to the conclusion that though Judd described his works as found objects, it is fair to call them sculptures.

After passing the fourth floor, the formal dining room, we arrived at the bedroom. For me, this room was the most interesting, much of which was due to the large installation piece by Dan Flavin. Flavin’s work was always something I was fond of due to his dynamic use of color and light. The piece spanned from ceiling to floor and wall to wall, and despite other works scattered across the space, it was the center of attention and the most memorable work I viewed when visiting the Judd Foundation.

After finishing at the Judd Foundation we visited an instillation piece that is a part of the Dia collection. Tucked away in an apartment in SoHo was “The Earth Room.” Viewing this piece by Walter De Maria, was something I can not even put into words. The piece consists of a large room filled approximately two feet deep with actual dirt. The aroma and feel of looking into the room is something I have never experienced before when viewing an instillation piece. Having the opportunity to experience this piece without any prior knowledge of it was truly the best part of the entire excursion for me.

An introduction, plus 0-9 review

Part 1: background

The idea behind this blog is to listen to all of the long live emo google drive, a drive containing “emocore” music from the “90’s” (more on this later), and comment the process. I found this archive while browsing some semi-obscure facebook group dedicated to emo music and decided to listen to all of it. I did this in part because I wanted to learn more about music, in part because it seems interesting to not have as much of a filter when listening to music as I’d only ever hear the most popular 90’s emocore otherwise but mostly because why not??

The E-word

(Feel free to skip this section if you already have a solid idea of what the hell “emocore” means)

(The rest of the section is basically just emo 101)

I like trying to categorize things, even though I’m aware that every categorization falls apart when you start really pushing it’s boundaries. I like strange cultural artifacts. Because of this, I am fascinated by emo. Emo is older than most people expect with it’s roots in the 80’s and that has meant several very different things both to different people and in different points in time. The part of emo that most people are familiar with is the one that was commercially successful maybe 10-15 years ago, and that is not even considered to be “real emo” by most people immersed into the subculture.

Emo started as an outgrowth of hardcore music in the 80’s and was pioneered by bands such as Rites of Spring, Moss Icon and Embrace. At the time it was referred to as “emotional hardcore” which was later shortened to “emocore” and finally just “emo”. During the 90’s a different style of emo was developed known as Midwest Emo which was much closer to alternative rock or indie rock while only maintaining some of it’s hardcore roots, with bands such as Sunny Day Real Estate, Mineral, the Promise ring and american football. During the 00’s there was more of an effort by record companies to make money of emo music which lead to more listenable and widely market music being created often closer to pop-punk and sometimes post-hardcore. Notable examples are The red jumpsuit apparatus, My chemical romance, Fall Out Boy, Taking back Sunday, Brand new and Jimmy Eat World. For a lot fans of more underground emo, most or all of these bands are considered fake emo. I’m gonna call it scene emo instead because that is a less loaded term. During the late 00’s, the so-called “emo revival” movement began to make more underground music with a more 90’s midwest sound. Some important revival bands are Snowing, The World is a Beautiful Place and I am no Longer Afraid to Die, Empire! Empire! (I was a lonely estate) and the Hotelier.

Basically, for some reason people consider Orchid, american football and Panic! At the Disco to be part of the same genre. To clear up any confusion, I’m using the word “emocore” to indicate that I’m talking about the more traditional “emotional hardcore” definition of emo. Note that the most common definition that you see in emo communities on the internet, or among more recent bands that call themselves emo is one that includes emocore (although this aspect is somewhat downplayed), 90’s midwest emo, a select few scene emo bands (specifically Brand New, Taking Back Sunday and Jimmy Eat World) as well as emo revival. This is also the kind of emo I am personally most familiar with.

There is however a contingent of people instead use the emocore definition, which you might recognize if you’ve ever seen the infamous real emo copypasta. The author of the long live emo archive, Лобынцев Артем, also seems to use this definition, although they probably actually know what they’re talking about.

“90’s” “emocore”

So some of the music on this drive isn’t actually from the 90’s, there’s also music from the 80’s and the early 2000’s. I’m calling it 90’s emocore because it paints a better picture than just emocore, even if it technically isn’t true. On a similar note, I’m calling it emocore even though there may very well be music that some genre nerd might argue isn’t actually emocore. As previously discussed, emo is a hopelessly broad term so I’m using emocore to give people a better idea of what to expect, not because it’s necessarily 100% accurate.

Part 2: The archive

The entire archive is 83.8 gigabyte which is more than 10% of my harddrive. I’ve spent several hours just downloading files, and I’ve only gotten up to the letter D. In the root of the folder there is a file called “List of folders.txt”. According to it, there are 1671 albums, 69.76 GB (this is presumably just the music without the image files also included? Maybe that’s what I should have called the blog) 12496 songs, and 19:00:26 hours. That’s in the format DD:HH:MM by the way.

This is an absurd amount of music. My plan is to try and finish it within one year, or before 2019/7/20. To do that, I would have to listen to an average of 4.6 albums, 34.22 songs or 1.25 hours a day. We’ll see how that goes.

Part 3: The review: 0-9 (finally!)

So this is the format: The drive is divided in to folders based on the first character of the band name. Every time I finish one such folder I will post a review like part 3 here (don’t worry, I wont spend hundreds of words talking about emo every post). I will talk about my favorite artist under that letter, my favorite band name, my favorite image (as I said, there are images included under some of the bands, mostly of their album covers and such) as well as anything else I find interesting. I might shake up the formula a bit as I go, who knows. Before writing this post I’ve listened to the first folder, titled “0-9”. This is one of the smallest folders in the compilation, despite technically containing ten different characters, with only 160 songs. For comparison, the letter a has 831 songs. A careful start in other words.

My favorite band

125, Rue Montmartre

So after all this talk about emocore I ended up picking the maybe least hardcore band, figures. Commenter Kyle Cornwell on Sophies Floarboard says that they’re emocore at least so we’re still good.

125, Rue Montmartre is a German band named after a street address in Paris. They where active between 1998 and 2000 and they released 1 EP, took part in 1 split with Maggat and appeared on 2 compilations. They have a female singer who not only sings but also speaks and whispers. The guitars mostly play short, catchy riffs or arpeggios with some occasional chords during more explosive parts. The bass is comparatively loud and often contributes to the melody of a given song more than the guitars. Their style is clearly closer to the Midwest style of emo with it’s arpeggiod guitars, more indie sound and more melancholy mood. Here are the lyrics to their song Disco Hijack along with it’s English translation, which are very emo:

I didn’t really find any name that was all that interesting under the number category (although I expect to find a lot of good ones down the line) but this is the one that spoke to me the most for whatever reason
