dealer!chris takes care of soft!reader after she accidentally takes an edible
warnings : edible. weed. reader is high for the first time. little bit of a freak out. and more?
“chris,” you murmured, your voice shaky as your body leaned up against the wooden frame of his bedroom door. your wide eyes darted around the room, not quite focusing on anything. “i don’t feel right.”
he was on his feet instantly, crossing the room to you. “what do you mean? what happened?”
your bottom lip quivered as you clutched the edge of the doorframe for balance. “i… i ate something. from the kitchen.” you paused, trying to collect your thoughts, though your words came out slow and slurred. “it was a brownie… in a bag… and now i feel weird.”
chris froze. he didn’t need to ask which brownie you meant. he’d left them on the counter for a friend to pick up later—edibles that were definitely not meant for you. his stomach dropped.
“angel,” he said cautiously, running a hand through his hair. “that wasn’t a normal brownie.” your brows furrowed in confusion. “what do you mean? it tasted normal.”
“it had weed in it,” he explained, his tone gentle. “a lot of weed. those are for people who’ve, y’know, built up a tolerance. not for someone who’s never smoked in their life.”
you blinked at him, the information processing in slow motion. then, your hands flew to your face. “oh my god. am i gonna die?”
chris bit back a laugh, his worry softening into affection. “no, babe. you’re not gonna die. you’re just really, really high right now.”
your shoulders sagged in relief, but only for a moment before panic set in again. “i don’t like it,” you whispered, your voice trembling. “i feel like my body’s not mine, and my thoughts won’t stop racing.”
his heart ached at the fear in your eyes. “okay, come here,” he said softly, guiding you to the bed. “sit down. i’ve got you.”
you leaned away from the door fran, your feet dragging against the floor as you made your way to the bed. you sat obediently, but your hands fidgeted in your lap. “chris, everything feels… big. like my hands, my feet, my head.”
he crouched in front of you, his hands gently covering yours to still them. “hey, look at me,” he said, his voice steady. “you’re okay. i promise. you’re just feeling things more intensely right now, but it’s all in your head. i’m here, and i won’t let anything bad happen to you.”
tears welled up in your eyes, and you nodded, clinging to his words. “promise?”
“i promise,” he said, brushing a stray tear off your cheek. “i’m gonna help you through this, alright?” you nodded again, leaning into his touch. “okay.”
“good. now, first things first—water.” he stood, turning and walking out of his door—disappeared into the kitchen, returning a moment later with a glass of water, a cold washcloth.
“drink this,” he said, handing you the water. “and take small sips, okay? don’t chug it.” you followed his instructions, the cool water soothing your dry throat. chris sat beside you, his arm draped over your shoulders, grounding you with his presence.
bringing the glass away from your lips, you hand it to chris. he takes it gently, setting it on his bedside table before returning his attention to you.
you managed a weak laugh, leaning your head against his shoulder. “i don’t get how people like this. my brain won’t shut up. i keep thinking about… about how time feels stretchy. Is that normal?” you ask, your words coming out slowly.
“yeah, that’s normal,” he said reassuringly. “it’s just the weed messing with your perception. it’ll pass. you’re safe.” you let out a shaky breath, sinking further into his side. “you’re really good at this,” you mumbled.
chris smiled, his fingers tracing gentle circles on your back. “i’ve been around enough people to know what to do. next time, ask me before you eat random stuff, yeah?” you groaned, covering your face with your hands. “this is so embarrassing.”
he laughed, pulling your hands away to press a kiss to your forehead. “nah. it’s kinda cute, honestly. no need to be embarrassed baby.” his hand reached out, brushing a strand of hair out of your face. “now lay down. rest a bit. i’ll be right here if you need me.”
you did as he said, turning out of his hold to crawl up in the bed—chris following as you curled up on his bed. his body slotted next to yours, wrapping his arms around you and holding you close. the water started to help, and his steady presence calmed the storm in your mind.
“chris?” you murmured after a while, your voice drowsy. he looked down at you, tugging you closer. “yeah?”
“thanks for taking care of me,” you said softly, your eyes fluttering closed as your body shifted—laying on your side as your own arms wrapped around his middle. your face snuggling into his chest.
he smiled, brushing his fingers over your cheek. “always, baby. always.”

I– I need to ask.
HOW DO YOU DO THIS?? Like, share your thoughts with everyone. Because I've been working on my universe for about three years now, AND I STILL FEEL LIKE IT'S NOT READY. At the same time, I’m still afraid to share these things...
So. How do you do it?D:
Alright my answer will seem a bit harsh and/or cruel, but know that I mean it in the most kind, genuine, and gentle way possible, i just don’t know how to word it any other way
With that in mind
Anon, you’re never going to be ready to share it, and the fear will always linger, you will never be 100% confident of what you share
And that’s ok
Again, I know that i make it seem super easy, but I promise that I’m just as afraid to share my ideas as anyone else (I’m a perfectionist, and that also contributes to my fear to share things)
It’s just, I think of it this way
I have an idea, and I got two choices
Either
1- I keep overthinking it, and succumb to my worries and fears when it comes to my idea, and keep my ideas with me, never to see the light of day
Or
2- I acknowledge that I’m afraid, acknowledge that my idea might not be perfect or ready, acknowledge that there might be flaws that I will probably notice later and even feel stupid about it, and still share my ideas anyway regardless of the voice in my head telling me to “wait a little more”
I usually go for choice number 2
The art and writing process is complicated, it’s so not easy to write something and feel ready to share it, no matter how much time it takes, you will never ever feel truly and utterly ready to share it, you’ll have that worry in your mind that maybe it’s stupid, or incomplete, or inconsistent or whatever else
And guess what? Sometimes, the worried voice in your head is completely right
But what matters is how you tackle it
Even if you share an idea, remember that you can always change your mind about it, you can absolutely go back and say, I don’t like that idea anymore and so I’ll remove/ change/ replace it
Ideas are never set in stone, you change and grow as a person as so do your ideas, they grow and change with you as you learn more and more, and sometimes they don’t, they don’t change at all, and that’s ok too
You can’t keep worrying about whether the story or idea you’re working on is ready or complete, because all you’re going to do is just walk around in circles and end up never sharing anything at all
It’s ok to be worried, but you can’t let your worries control you, of course, it’s not easy to ignore your worries, but it’s better than feeling stuck with your ideas
I myself do deal with these worries a lot, most of the time i just tell my brain “shut up” and share my ideas anyway, other times my worries do get the best of me and i tend to keep some ideas to myself
But sharing your ideas is actually essential for you to actually be able to work on them and refine them, because people might start asking questions or giving really good feedback that you actually sit with yourself to think about
But what if they ask you a question and you don’t know the answer to it? That’s actually a good thing, it’ll make you sit down and think of how to connect the dots and answer it, not only does it mean you’re actually making progress on your story/ideas, but these kinda questions help you understand different perspectives and by that, you learn and grow in your writing
It’s ok to be worried and to keep ideas to yourself sometimes, but don’t let them fester, because believe me, eventually your passion is gonna burn out because you kept overthinking it to the point it became just a worry than something you enjoy doing
In fact, to give you a bit of motivation, imma actually share one of the ideas I never shared cause I was afraid it’ll be a bit stupid and out of character
And I’m very worried about sharing it, but fuck my worry I do what I want
Remember when I mentioned Dream received one gift from Nightmare, and never received anything after? My idea for that gift was an echo flower he gave Dream, and it echoes one thing “I love you”
Tumblr media
There, I shared it ouuughh the stress of sharing it is killing me actually, but I mean I can keep worrying about it forever, or actually share it and refine it later if I wanted, I choose the latter
And your ideas are never going to be perfect anyway, but you can improve them with time, even after sharing them
That’s all I do really shzggz
So go out there and start sharing anon, fuck anxiety, you can do whatever you want, you’re unstoppable

Manipulative!Jade?
Maybe he plays mind games with reader until the roles suddenly switch around on him??
(btw I love your writing 💛, but I 100% just googled adjectives until something clicked. Didn't want to use the same things)
I WENT A LITTLE OVERBOARD
Your weird manager tm (an eel man in a chiseled man-man suit) has no real right to ban your boyfriends from the workplace, but you do see what you look for, and as a observer it is exceptionally easy for Jade to point out missteps. Dress code and volume are two of his favourite policies to call out- But the boyfriends never mattered, they’re just wallets and traps for the big fish now. Your new and improved passion project is figuring out why this guy hates you!
Manipulative!Jade that makes you drinks off of those “secret menus” in front of customers who want it after rejecting their order, no matter how made up it is or how often you deny his “friendly gifts”. You could say (to his face!) that you’ll never eat something he’s made for fear of whatever the hell he did to it, but he won’t stop. He likes to see you flip between the choices, that face you make is to die for <3
Manipulative!Jade that’s probably not officially certified for this gig- But that’s exactly what it is, a gig, and if he can fry an egg that’s really all you need for this “fine establishment”. He could do better, a lot better than this high turnover satellite joint. He’s the longest standing employee here, so if the creep can feel it he’s probably high off nostalgia. (At least that’s what your coworkers say) You know better, you know him and the actual hard on he gets “dissecting the scum of the earth”. You felt it, the last time he kissed along the column of your neck in his too-clean car. Promising you a ticket out of here that’ll never come.
Manipulative!Jade doesn’t put the effort into lovebombing or being the white knight, you’re too smart for that. This game you play is between the two of you. Not some victim that he shapes (he could find someone for that anywhere), you’re different. Not quite special, just different. He’s obsessed with your fight- biting against his fingers when he tries to ease them towards your mouth, crushing his sensitive inner thigh beneath your heel.. At times he thinks you’ll take the chance to bite his tongue off when you kiss. If you want it rough so badly, then he’ll play rough til’ your heart’s content :)
In the end you did find out why Jade “hates” you (yay!), he’s a massive idiot in love (awh! Or the closest he can get to it). At least you’ve found a partner that can’t be kicked out, and you definitely don’t miss the other guys you dated, you’re just not sure how to get rid of this one? Or even if you want to? He’s practically ingrained himself into your brain, and maybe that was his goal the whole time. Maybe you’re just into massive weirdos, but that’s for future you to deal with. (Hopefully with the help of an engagement ring! Maybe then you’ll have enough money to get out of this hellhole) <3

Shutout (Twisted! Glisten x Reader)
An: I'm pretty sure it's the same person requesting the Glisten things, and you know what? I love that for you, marketable plush anon. I LOVE Glisten so much but not very many people seem to want him to love them back :( So you me anon, we're changing the Dandy's world x Reader tag piece by piece.
This was a request!
They asked would would've happened if Reader hadn't made it to the elevator, and that's such a fun idea?
-> Part One
Warnings: Depictions of being turned into a twisted, Ichor being used as blood, unhealthy mindsets.
Writer does not condone the relationship depicted by Twisted! Glisten. It is written as unhealthy and dependent for a reason. Take it with a grain of salt. If this is triggering to you, please Do Not Read.
☁ It wasn't you're finest moment when your foot caught the capsule, sending you to the ground, but it's even worse when you realize it has seen you and is coming right at you.
☁ The ground came at you hard and fast, too fast for you to do anything but brace yourself. It's footsteps were much closer now, which became clearer when the room stopped spinning.
☁ You scramble to get up, tears already bulbing in your eyes as you stagger, your hip crying out in pain at the sudden bruise inflicted upon it. Glancing over your shoulder, you screech at how close it now is, moving much quicker as if to make up for the precious seconds lost.
☁ It makes no difference when put up against it's speed though, and you know it.
☁ The elevator is just in reach though, and a foolish, hopeful part of your brain convinces that you could make it. Just as your foot brushes the lip of the elevator, you're quickly reminded that hope has no place down here.
☁ It's fingers curl around your scruff and yank, making you stumble back with hands outstretched, just as Brightney reached for your own hand. Your fingers brush and Goob is just the second too late when the Elevator slams shut and you're left in the desolate room with it.
☁ It acts like it had gotten some big prize. It's garbled words cheer happily as it's other hand wraps around you, it's sharp edges pricking your flesh every single move of it's head.
☁ It makes your break waver and shudder as you try not to think about what's going to happen to you. You're going to turn into a twisted. There's no question about it. But you've never heard of anyone being turned by Glisten's Twisted.
☁ Would it toy with you like Bobette's twisted did? Would it make it quick, but no less painful, like Pebbles? Maybe it would be like Scraps or Goob's twisted, that let you think they lost focus before striking from a distance.
☁ You just hoped it was quick.
☁ Your heart stops and sinks for a moment. Speaking of, Glisten. He'd be heartbroken. He was adamant on you waiting until he was healed to go on this run, but your ability was needed. You promised you'd come back.
☁ Standing here, you prayed he'd forgive you some day.
☁ On the other hand, he was ecstatic. He had you in his hands. You had tried to get away. You had put up such a fight, but he was sure it was just because you were scared!
☁ That was it! You had to be so scared of his new form! He knew it was scary himself, especially since he couldn't go find his shattered pieces right now, but you'd grow to love it in time! He knows you would!
☁ Better yet, you could join him! You and him for all of this blasted eternity. He wouldn't let you go back to his regular form.
☁ Why would he do that. That would be foolish. Not when he has something he knows the other version of him would do anything to get back.
☁ While twisted didn't understand feelings, to a degree, he knew that if nothing else, keeping you with him would hurt the other version. And that's truly what he wanted.
☁ He never wanted you to leave. You were his, his, his. And he would make sure you knew it.
☁ Clawed fingers ran up your side before digging into the flesh of your hips, making you cry out as the first drops of infected ichor drilled itself into your bloodline. You shake and cry out, elbow immediately flying back out of instinct alone.
☁ It cracks the largest remaining shard and makes it reel back, giving you the opportunity to take off. You don't have anywhere to run, not really, especially not with the elevator shut down like it is, but perhaps there were supports left laying around that your team hadn't picked up. Anything to give you the upper hand, even as you struggle to ignore the ache in your side.
☁ It lets out a screech behind you, immediately taking off in the same direction you did. You sob pathetically at it, taking a harsh turn and hiding behind a metal shelf that had toppled over. You pray to anything and everything that its enough to throw it off your trail.
☁ It works as you watch the twisted run right past you, and you have to clap a hand over your mouth to muffle the cries that threaten to break free. You have no time to cry.
☁ You need to plan. Find a way to survive until a rescue group comes to find you.
☁...They would come. You tell yourself. they had to, right?
☁ Shaking your head free of doubt, you wipe your tears and carefully begin your search, picking up tapes and ornaments as you go. They have no use for you now other than useful ammo for you to throw somewhere else and throw it off your trail.
☁ There wasn't anything much really, aside from a few gumballs you were chewing on mindlessly and a can of pop you were keeping for and emergency. It makes you huff from your hiding place under a table. It wasn't the best, but it was all you could do without making a mass amount of noises.
☁ You can still hear it's steps. It had picked up it's shattered pieces by now, but ichor tears are still dripping down it's cheeks as it wanders, groans begging for your attention.
☁ The infected ichor in your system almost yearns to go to it, just for some semblance of security.
☁ But you don't want that. You Don't.
☁ Your head leans onto your knees as your eyes nearly close every time you think you have a moment of peace. You lost track of the time long ago, the slow realization that there was no one coming for you settling in.
☁ It makes your chest ache as you try not to dwell on it. Did they tell Glisten yet? You wonder how he reacted.
☁ (Somewhere back in the lobby there's a crash with screams of anger, a slighted mirror making his war path bloody and known. He demands to go back down, regardless of his own injuries, and demands to retrieve his jewel. He demands vengence for a wrong done, even if it was by no fault of the other toons. He's livid, spitting insults to those who weren't fast enough. To the distractor who didn't ensure everyone was in the elevator. To anyone close enough to be a part of his meltdown. He's had to be stopped three times from going by himself, making the situation worse. He's hurting and angry, and making sure everyone knows it.)
☁ You only doze off for a second, you swear, when a hand claps around your ankle and pulls. You try and grab out for anything to stop this, knuckles banging against the large center leg of the table before you wrap your arms around it. You hold on for dear life, and as the claws dig into your ankle and more infected ichor sinks into your bloodstream. It burns as it does, and you can feel every single inch of your bloodstream sizzle as it happens. You cry out at both the feeling and being pulled again.
☁ Your grip slips for mere second, but that's all it takes as your suddenly assaulted by the fluorescent lights.
☁ He happily babbles at the sight of you. He had found you! He should've known you were tired! He's never been a regular toon, but he knows that they need things like food, water and sleep. You were like a pet!
☁ He hadn't gotten his claws on you long enough to fully transform you, but seeing the black veins crawling up your neck gives him hope that your close!
☁ It makes his innards churn with excitement as he catches your flailing limbs, watching as your chest heaves and your cheeks sheen with tears. You'd be so pretty on the other side. He knows it.
☁ And soon you will too. He grins, or tries too, with his claws pricking into your forearms. His own infected ichor quickly streams into the open wounds and you cry out as your body quivers and shakes.
☁ He steps back if only to bask in his own work, watching in glee as your roll onto your stomach. Your eyes bleed into a shiny crimson as Ichor drips down your cheeks, your feet trailing it as you stumble to your feet.
☁ You're a glorious sight to behold and his lack of heart positively thrums as he pulls you close again.
☁ You moan, in agony or desperation, he's unsure, but he gives you his attention nonetheless.
☁ You'd follow him from this point on, he'd ensure it.
☁ And he'd make damn sure his other half knew it too, grinning at the sounds of the elevator dinging behind him.

First gaming video of 2025 and Dan and Phil have never been this fucking soft and open. I kept needing to pause the video and go back over sections, just to bask in their answers and make sure I actually heard them correctly.
Every minute had some moment that made me want to linger, eyes looking first at one and then the other, soaking it all in. They really weren't kidding when they said that video would have everything. Competitive "gaming" (though they were neither really gaming or very competitive), societal commentary (the ending bit!!!) and being parasocial with us (we know them so well and yet there always feels like there's new to learn).
So many highlights that it almost feels impossible to capture them all. Dan thinks that Phil is the funniest person he knows. And Phil was perking up immediately gesturing at himself before Dan was even done reading the question. Phil knows he is the funniest person Dan knows, and he acknowledged it so shamelessly. He's a silly little guy and so funny, Dan really couldn't say anyone else.
Within the bit, but calling each other girlfriends felt so tender. And while they could lean hard into the female friends reference from the game, it was just emphasised. Like when Phil looked right into the camera and told us he was excited to learn more about his girlfriend. Don't look at my rewind count.
Dan predicting that Phil would topple the whole tower by sliding his chair into their stupid, tiny, blanket covered wobbly table on wheels (WHO PLAYS JENGA ON SUCH A THING). The shout of joy when Dan won and Phil pouring jenga pieces over him, as well as stacking them on top of his own head at the end. The fact they didn't fucking print a jenga piece but stuck an actual one on the board with blue tack (discount ver.).
Phil pressing Dan to actually answer some questions a little deeper, like the music one, where it felt like we were all old friends. Because yeah, we know the Muse lore. It's their story but they've shared it so freely with us that it feels familiar. Phil saying his favourite clothing store is their merch site where there's currently one T-shirt available. (But they have had some banger merch through the years, I personally own so much of it). Dan yapping so much that Phil just went ahead and played his turn while Dan was finishing up, further playing into the notion Dan yaps in circles and Phil's brain can just filter him out when he gets like that.
The soft looks, the way their eyes kept crinkling with fond smiles, and how they seemed so energised. The casual mention about the text reveal that it would be a spoiler for next year's wdapteo! When I tell you my heart leapt, because I know they promised not to leave post tour this time again but any reassurance is gentle cradled against my chest all the same.
There's not the tiredness in them like the end of II. TIT has only a few weeks left and they're bouncing. Vibrant and so fucking alive that it's infectious. They joke about the parasocial but they also know that it matters to us, and it matters to them on some level as well. They know us. We're their little gremlins that they accidentally summoned and it might have been overwhelming at times, but we've also brought them good things. Nice moments. Just the sincerity of it all.
Bless Phil's impulsive eBay purchase of a 90's gendered jenga that had been sitting on some aunt's floor. They make simple games so fucking fun and entertaining and this video is an instant fave. As evident by the fact, I needed to take a page from Dan's book and yap my little heart out.

Hold up a vision of the angsty admirer au just struck me. It’s a little skip ahead. Sorry.
The party still breaks into the counselors office and sees the records and puts together that it isn’t random. They put together that it’s about guilt and depression and self hatred.
They all, rationally, assume it’s because he’s repeating senior year.
Lucas, though.
Sweet, kind, supportive Lucas, who has a box of letters apologizing blindly to someone that Eddie had intentionally torn apart. Lucas, who has barely held his tongue since that day at Hellfire. Lucas, who admires the hell out of Steve, wants to be him, and who thinks he made it worse. Who thinks he’s at fault for Steve being cursed.
Somewhere in between Steve getting out of Vecnas powers, and this, Chrissy died (sorry babe) and it’s not pinned on Eddie, but that’s where suspicion is leaning.Nancy and Robin talked to him, convinced him that Steve is fine, explained a small part of the upside down, and told him to keep his head down, begged him to just stay in the trailer, and above all, not to get involved further.
Steve is shutting down on them, and after they saw the notes about Chrissy and Fred, they’re pushing him. Which is making it worse. Robin is spiraling, Max is furious. Dustin is on the edge of hysterical.
For whatever reason, they need to talk to Eddie again. Information about Victor Creel probably. Since most of them are freaked out by Steve, it’s only Nancy and Lucas that go. Yeah, Lucas should have been listening while Nancy talked through a plan of what they were and were not going to tell Eddie, but he wasn’t. He tells her that after Eddie’s, they need to go by his house, that he has something to help Steve.
Pull up at the trailer, and Lucas cracks down the center. He runs from Nancy’s car, shoves open the door, immediately steps inside, and fucking decks Eddie. Puts him on the ground in one hit and because his entire hand now hurts, Lucas is looking for something to use as a replacement for a bat. It’s easy math for him. He knows why Vecna was able to go after Steve. He knows that if it wasn’t for this asshole with his caste assumptions about high school, Steve would be safe.
Hawkins wouldn’t be, Lucas knows that, but they’d have Steve, and if they have Steve, then they — then Lucas will feel like they’re going to survive.
Nancy stops him before Lucas can actually beat Eddie with an ashtray.
“If you hadn’t said that to him! If you actually looked at people! If you listened to them and trusted us! If you could just understand that not everyone has to choose a side, he would be safe! He’s dying and it’s your fault, Eddie! He’s gonna die, and it’s going to be because you never really see anyone, just the person you think they’re supposed to be!”
Eddie hasn’t been looped in yet. He doesn’t know what Lucas is talking about, but it’s Lucas screaming at him, which is enough for the pieces to come closer. It’s not like Eddie hasn’t been thinking about the way Steve said he wanted to sleep. It’s been half his brain at any second of the day. He’d broken every promise to his secret admirer, thrown insults like blades at every soft spot Steve has, and until that Friday, he thought he was standing on the moral high ground.
Yeah. It’s enough for Eddie to realize that the curse is because of what he did to Steve. On the ground, looking up at a freshman who loves Steve more than Eddie had the chance to, Eddie can’t even find the words to start an apology.
Nancy yanks Lucas back farther. She doesn’t help Eddie up though. She’s also damn smart, and can put clues together.
“Man, you need to—“ Eddie starts, talking to the other person in the room who, Lucas entirely missed in the tunnel vision of his rage. “—you gotta come back later. Pay me later.” He scrambles to the bathroom and slams the door.
“Yeah, i guess I… Lucas, make sure you ice that hand, your form was no good.”
Finally, Lucas turns, along with Nancy, to find Patrick, fidgeting and uncomfortable, with a little baggie in his hand. He pulls some cash from his wallet, drops it on the table.
And look. Lucas would love to stop and talk to his teammate, who is looking very messed up. Who obviously needs someone. But Steve is going to die, and he can’t think beyond that fact. Honestly, Nancy is the same.
That’s why they’ve started a whispered discussion of how fast they can get answers and leave when they notice that Patrick is frozen in place, two steps from the door.

HII NORTH ( ˶ˆᗜˆ˵ ) do you know a lot about manifestation/how to practice it? if so what has ur experience been with it? i have a follow up question but i dont want to sound like im interrogating you 😭 ill probably ask it after this question/in the comments of this question
Honestly I'm not good at it all that much 😭 besides shifting and actively experiencing a change, I almost never try any other methods of it because of how weird/complicated I make it on accident while trying.
In my personal experience, manifesting is like boomerang, you throw out your intention and you receive it back physically. It's sort of unpredictable, like sometimes you experience results immediately, or not for a long time. Sometimes it's not exactly what you envisioned, or maybe it's EXACTLY what you envisioned - but it's not what you needed in that instance yk?
I don't do it a lot, because unfortunately I get demotivated extremely easily. If I don't see results immediately then the doubts make it almost impossible to keep faith in my own intentions. Which is why whenever I shift, I make sure to have whatever I desire in mind so that way I don't need to go through all of this trouble for it.
When I was a younger kid, I would listen to subliminal messaging RELIGIOUSLY. Like every single day for at least a few hours at a time. I did this for probably around 3 years, starting when I first found out about subliminals and not stopping until I experienced something that had kinda made me realize the gravity of doing so like I did.
Nothing bad, at least not this first experience anyway. I remember back then, I was obsessed with werewolves specifically from twilight. It crossed my mind every single day so of course I was willing to jump into anything that could promise my own experience in such a life as a twilight werewolf 😭. I looked and explored all over the internet for different subliminals made by different sources and different affirmations, and no results at all. Eventually though, I just found I grew extremely patient with the results I was waiting for, I found that I genuinely just enjoyed the couple 3 or 4 main subliminals I had found enough to listen to them without the anticipation in my belly making it hard to be in the moment. Of course, back then I didn't realize this, nor did I realize what happened because of this newfound relaxation until one morning I woke up and the teeth in my mouth had all changed shape entirely. I looked in the mirror getting ready for school and vividly remember just standing there with my mouth open and frozen in my spot. My teeth were absolutely a different shape before this morning. I had fallen asleep that night to a subliminal and coincidentally, one of the affirmations were fangs and sharp k9's. This took the relaxation and turned it into slight intimidation. Made me realize that whatever I was doing, was working somehow. It was intimidating.
Second experience, years later in 2020 I had picked up subliminals once again after a year or two break from it, and instead of wolf subliminals - it was shifting subliminals. I won't name the account because honestly I can't remember but they're extremely problematic. I'm not the only bad experience with this account and their subliminals. I had fallen into the same routine, falling asleep to the subliminals daily, everything was fine enough at first that I didn't realize anything was wrong. Just chalked it up to my brain being an asshole.
Over time, and continuing to listen to those affirmations religiously, I started to experience some scary shit back to back, more than normal. Nightmares that weren't lucid but felt more vivid than reality, where the contents were nothing but darkness and pure malicious invasion of my mind and dream state. It was disgusting. I stopped after I realized what the reasoning for these things was, and eventually even heard the same exact stories from other shifters who used that accounts subliminals.
I don't use subliminals at all anymore, but only because I know I don't need them. However, if I did, I now know for a fact that this shit is serious, manifestation is real and you need to take caution with what you're trying to make your reality. This was my second time being shown this, and now my main form of manifesting is just shifting, so I'm sorry if that's not helpful. Feel free to ask anything else!!!

Hello love the way how you write fics it just scratches my brain so good, can i request jake x reader where reader finds out about all the bad things he did (him joining illegal gambling stuff and Scamming people 💀) ANGST if you could thank you so much
shackles ╏ jake kim
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𓇼 summary: jake reminisces his relationship. #sadtimes
𓇼 details: angst, f! reader, a lot of build up.
𓇼 wc: 2k
𓇼 A/N: anon YOUR REQUEST scratched my brain so good...i love dissecting this man!
Tumblr media
with you, he didn't feel restricted to just being jake kim, no. 1 or jake kim, son of gapryong kim. he felt like he could just be himself, with no labels. you made him the happiest man on the planet, and for some reason, you were happy with him too.
and the profoundness of it all is that meeting you happened by complete chance.
his card had declined at a vending machine.
jake looked left and right, hoping no one saw, until he heard laughter coming from behind him.
"times are tough, huh? let me get that for you" you said, giving him a small smile.
he blinked in surprise. "oh...thanks, but you don't have to"
"too late!" you beamed, stepping beside him to face the vending machine. "i made up my mind! what did you want?"
jake didn't like you. he just liked the fanta you bought him. that's what he told himself anyway.
but friendly conversation turned into an exchange of numbers, and an exchange of numbers turned into hanging out. hang out's turned into something more romantic, until you suddenly asked: "can i be your girlfriend?"
jake really should've declined. he'd have to come clean and admit he's essentially a gangster. he wouldn't have time to spend time with you.
...and you deserve so much better. he shouldn't let the bleakness, the danger of his role dull your light.
jake had all the time in the world to start a relationship with someone. it's not like it had to be with you.
still, he found himself not wanting to say no. he didn't know how much he wanted to hear those words until you asked. so...jake wasn't really thinking straight when he shakily whispered: "i'd really like that"
jake remembers when he told you what he actually does. he remembers how you laughed in his face, how you stopped when you saw he wasn't laughing with you.
"you're the leader of a gang?" you squeaked after a few minutes of explanations. "oh my god...does that mean you've killed people?"
"what?! no!" he waved his hands frantically. "we're just trying to protect the street from other gangs. big deal is more of like...a crew"
he sighed, rubbing his neck sheepishly. "look, i understand if you want to end things...it's not the most honourable occupation"
you eyed him suspiciously. "so you don't do like...illegal stuff?"
he gulped slightly. "no"
...well not anymore. so it's not a complete lie.
you narrowed your eyes, not looking convinced. "...so big deal is 100% clean?"
...jake really should've just told the truth, but the lie escaped before he had time to think. "yep. i swear"
you looked at him for a few moments before holding out your pinkie finger. "promise?"
jake linked his pinkie with yours, crossing his fingers behind his back. "i promise"
♡𖠋
jake remembers how you gave him his first kiss. how you smiled against his lips, even as his hands slightly trembled. it felt like fireworks. everything else melted away — his humour, his walls — just the flutter of something new. something he never thought he needed until now.
he still remembers the first time he brought you to the street, how everyone at big deal greeted you with 90 degree bows, how you waved your hands and told them it wasn't necessary.
or jerry's instant barrage of questions and how you sat through every one, how he gave jake his nod of approval afterwards.
or how the girls handed you a bag, giving you winks as jake stared in confusion. he remembers how beautiful you looked in the dress they gifted you, how you left him speechless.
or how he held you a bit longer than usual the night before rescuing sinu.
𖠋♡𖠋
"sinu! you won't believe it! boss jake got himself a girl!"
"what?!" sinu shrieked in excitement. "jake, you little rascal! i'm gone for a few years and you find yourself a lover?" sinu aggressively rubbed elbows with his.
jake smiled sheepishly, his cheeks flushed pink in a rare sight. "you'll really like her"
sinu smiled gently. "i already do. it's hard to find understanding people like that"
jerry doesn’t miss how jake's smile turned plastered as he nodded.
𖠋♡𖠋
"boss?"
"yeah jerry?"
jerry set his spoon down, thinking of the best way to phrase this. "...you know i'll support whatever you choose, but i think she deserves to know everything"
"...i know" he said quietly.
and jake was going to tell you. eventually.
𖠋♡𖠋
it happened a few days after sinu's return. jake remembers how you asked to meet with him, how your gaze was fixed on the sea even as he came to stand beside you.
"hey...are you okay?" he asked, immediately sensing something off.
"did you run an illegal gambling ring?"
and that's when it hit him — like a punch to the gut he wasn’t ready for. jake felt like he couldn't breathe. he stood frozen beside you, heart hammering in his ears.
you weren’t screaming, you weren’t crying, you were just…asking.
"...where did you hear that?" he said, his voice wobbling slightly.
you exhaled shakily. "this short guy with glasses came to visit me yesterday. he said you ran a gambling ring and went to prison for it"
eugene? revenge for breaking the alliance? eugene really went out of his way to do that? but in hindsight, it was the perfect way to crush him before crushing big deal.
jake remembers how dull your eyes were that day. there were no tears, no emotions, no sniffling. until he realised you did all your crying the night before.
you continued, your voice cracking. "and i said...i said he was a liar, that you'd never do that, but then he showed me pictures of you in prison"
"he said that you took advantage of innocent people...the elderly, teenagers, people trying to send their kids to college"
the memories he wanted to block came back to him all at once.
— Give me back my money, you fuckers! That money was for my daughter's university tuition! I swear to god, I'll blow this whole place up. I mean it!
— Go ahead. Do it. You don't even have the balls. So why did you bother bringing that heavy gas tank? Get him out of here.
"...he said that you profited off of prison fights, that people placed bets and you collected the money for yourself"
jake remembers how pathetic he felt just standing there and listening. there was nothing he could say.
"you promised...and we've been together for months" you said, choking on your words. "i don't care that you lied to me, but you swore that big deal was different. why did you do it?"
"...i had no choice" he whispered. "i tried everything. i needed the money to get sinu back...i had no other options"
you turned to look at him. despite the resignation in your voice, your eyes were starting to water. "that's...not the only thing he said. he said that big deal were okay to let innocent people be taken as hostages...that you just stood there and let it happen"
his blood ran cold. the summit meeting.
"at least tell me the hostage thing isn't true" you croaked. "teenage girls, a middle aged woman...even a baby...tell me he's wrong about that"
jake still couldn't bring himself to look at you. "no, it's true...it's all true"
in spite of your resolve, he heard sniffling. "why?"
"i know it's despicable. it's terrible, but...i had to protect my people. i'd...i'd do it to protect you" he mumbled.
"...protect me from what?"
...workers? rival gangs? enemies of his father? but if he hadn't brought you into his life, you'd never have to worry about that.
in that moment, jake realised he only needed to protect you from himself.
the silence lingered as you sniffled some more. jake glanced at you, the tears now streaming down your face. he reached a hand out, but quickly brought it back to his side, knowing better.
realising you weren't getting an answer, you continued. "...whatever. i don't even care anymore" you muttered.
"i understand why you did those things, but...i can't pretend to be okay with it. i would never want you to protect me if this is what it takes"
he nodded slowly, knowing what was going to happen.
"so i think it's best if we end this" you said shakily.
jake finally turned to look at you, flashing that plastered smile he hates having to use. "i understand...i'm sorry for wasting your time"
you looked at jake for a while, probably expecting more of a fight from him. but the truth is, he couldn't say all the things he wanted.
i'm so sorry. i'm so ashamed of everything. i'll be better for you. i'll never do those things again. i need you. please don't leave.
it wouldn't be true. if he had to do those things again, he would. in a weird way, jake is thankful that eugene pulled the trigger, because he's not sure he wanted to escape the lie of being a good person.
finally, you nod. "...i'm sorry i was dumb enough to believe you"
and as you began walking away, jake finally let out the tears he was holding.
just as he got sinu back, he's loosing something else. but this time, he knows you're not returning.
𖠋♡𖠋
jake should've told you from the beginning. but either way, he always knew it would turn out like this. he was being selfish, living in a fantasy where he could have you and big deal. or maybe he believed the sweetness of your relationship could erase his actions somehow, that he was never jake kim, head of the numbers racket.
he still remembers lineman asking where you went, how jake's sad smile told him everything, how he never brought the topic back up again.
jake never stops thinking about you. you're like a thorn on his side he never wants to take out. he wonders if you've ever thought of him since then, he hopes you have at least once.
sometimes he wonders what it would be like to show up at your door with flowers, saying those three words he was thinking about professing. i love you. i would do anything for you. please give me a second chance. you're everything to me.
but he can't. he can't have both.
jake still looks at your pictures together when he's alone. he still reads through your old messages. he can never bring himself to delete the remnants of you.
jake still wonders what it would be like to experience you completely. how every touch, every unveiling would be so new to him. his cheeks would've been dusted pink, clumsy in his attempts to make you feel cherished. he imagines kissing every inch of you, each kiss feeling like the discovery of something precious. he would've wondered how he got so lucky to see you like this — so beautiful, so entirely his.
jake still remembers your laugh, the one that made his chest ache in a good way, how it felt like he was the only person who could make you laugh like that. he still remembers the way your hand would hover over his, waiting for him to hold it first, and how when he did, you’d give him that little smile, like the world was okay just because you two were together.
jake just remembers everything about you.
Tumblr media
"uh...jake?"
he snaps back to the present, glancing at daniel who's sitting on a bench near him.
"are you okay?" daniel asks in confusion. "you've been staring at that vending machine for a while...you must be pretty indecisive. in that case, i recommend the diet coke"
...
times are tough, huh? let me get that for you.
he laughs softly, shaking his head. "sorry. i was just lost in my thoughts"
today, jake thinks he misses you a bit more.

Friendship In Escape
Summary: Steve Rogers x fe!Reader -> After escaping a party, you meet Steve Rogers. It's in a simple conversation, you and him find common ground and from that a friendship grows. Question is, will either of you ever find the courage to act of the underlying feelings?
Disclaimer: This is a LONG one. Spoilers ahead for most of the main Captain America/Avengers films from The Avengers. Also, there's probably a lot of plot holes in this fic so we're just gonna ignore them. Slow, slow burn. Angst-y moments. Found family, fluff, taking care of each other. Some swearing. Reader helps Steve adjust to the modern world. Lots of hugging. Probably spelling and grammar mistakes but we're gonna ignore them, too (it's late and I'm pretty sure my brain is fried). Hope you enjoy it <3 Not proof read.
Tumblr media
The party had been humming to life for an hour or more before the honorable host finally showed his face. Dawned in a big name branded suit, Tony Stark stood at the top of the stairs, calling for people to start the party.
There was meant to be music, laughter, too many drinks and a fight he’ll be able to tell a story about at the next party. And you were sure, by the end of the night, he’d get his wish.
This party in particular had been the third you’d been dragged along to in the space of a month. It hadn’t changed since you were a child.
Posh names belonging to posh people with deep pockets and, when the time called for it, had long arms, too. The amount of money that was gathered from parties like this were worth the events being held.
But never once had you felt comfortable.
It wasn’t the shoes or the dress. In fact, getting ready was the best part of the night. But being dragged to the same people, with the same stories, being told about the same single people in their family, their sons, nephews, cousins. Being told to stand and take a picture with a smile that will let everyone know how fun the parties are.
But they weren’t.
For others they were. But for you? You had more fun spending time alone in the libraries at University, studying, answering company emails and working, mostly, from behind the curtain.
If you could have done that, you would have avoided the parties all together. Relationships with other businesses were already solidified and had been for almost fifty years.
So, after the fourth hour of walking around the gala room, standing and being forced to listen to the same conversations that you’d heard your whole life, listening to people be more interested in what Tony Stark had placed around his hosting room, and being introduced to another twenty something with a multi-billion dollar company behind his family’s name, but no integrity, you found your escape.
“Darling, where are you going?” Your mother asked as you handed her your drink.
“Just to the bathroom.”
She gave you a smile. “Hurry back. Sandra told me she’s bringing her cousin. Special invite from Mr Stark himself.”
You forced your millionth smile of the night and nodded. “Will do.”
As you took the stairs up towards the upper floors and bathrooms, you looked down over the edge of the balcony. They were preoccupied, listening to somebody’s story.
Rather than taking a right, you took a left, bumping into a waitress.
“I’m so sorry. Are you alright?”
She nodded. “Can I help you with something?”
You looked around you. “Just promise you didn’t see me. I need a break.”
The waitress just smiled. “There’s some rooms that haven't been decorated yet. Just take a right at the end of the hall.”
You looked down the hall, looked back and smiled at her. The first genuine smile of the evening.
“Thank you.”
She shrugged. “This is my fifth party helping the host. We all need a break every once in a while.”
You thanked her again before walking down the hall. The minute you turned the corner, the party seemed like it was miles away. Every once in a while, you heard a roar of laughter but it never got any louder than that.
With a sigh of relief, you decided to explore the different rooms. Some had tarp over the entrances, the insides not being suitable to survive at least an hour in. From holes in the floors to fresh paint fumes and drying plaster.
But then one at the very end of the hall had a door. So, taking your chance, you opened it.
“Oh!”
Inside stood a man dressed in a woolen style suit, his tie loose around his neck. He looked as if he’d been pacing and deep in thought before you’d opened the door.
“I-” You looked around you, fearful you were about to get into trouble. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know anyone- Sorry.”
“Trying to escape the party, too?”
You stopped trying to close the door and looked at him. You couldn’t put your finger on it; maybe it was the way he stood, maybe it was the tone in his voice or maybe it was the way he was looking at you, but you saw something trustworthy in him.
An unlikely friend in a place where you had none.
“What gave it away?”
He smiled, softly. “You’re welcome to stay, if you’d like.”
You stepped inside. “Thank you.”
“I- I’m Steve, by the way.” He held out his hand and you shook it.
“Y/n.”
“It’s nice to meet you.”
For the second time that evening, you gave a genuine smile. “Likewise. So, what are you hiding from? A match-making mother, or a business minded father?”
“Neither.” Steve laughed a little.
You walked further into the room before finding a spot with less sawdust on the ground. You’d been on your feet for a long time. You found the perfect spot against a wall between two windows.
“Wow,” you brushed what sawdust you could with your feet before turning around and tucking the skirt of your dress down. “Sounds like there’s a story there.”
He chuckled. “Not a big one.”
You shrugged, stretching your legs out and crossing them at your ankles. You patted the ground beside you. “My parents want me to socialise. I’d say talking with you qualifies as that. I’ve got time.”
Steve smiled as he watched you, finally agreeing to sit beside you.
And for the first time in almost a month, you weren’t bored.
Talking and listening to Steve didn’t make you so bored out of your mind you would have rather ran a cross country race. Talking with Steve was the first time you felt comfortable at one of these fancy galas.
You’d come to learn that he was, in fact, the man they’d dug out of the ice. That he was the soldier lost to time, being forced into a new century without any idea how to deal with it.
“I know a little of what that’s like,” you admitted to him. “To feel lost. I’ve been attending different parties like this since I was a kid. And never once have I felt comfortable attending them. I can talk to everyone in the room and feel completely loney, but I can sit on my own in a quiet place like this and…feel comfortable and be myself.”
“I had that once.” Steve told you. “I’d say back home, but I’m still in the same country. To be honest, I don’t know what anything is outside of this room.”
Then an idea popped into your head. “I could help.”
“How?”
You shrugged. “I could help you adjust. I’m no therapist but I know how most things work in the 21st century. Movies, media, books. You said they gave you a document packet?”
Steve nodded, reaching into his jacket and pulling out a folded over thick document.
“With all the stores and street names, I don’t recognise anything anymore.”
Opening it up, Steve handed it to you. It had an address, some pictures, different appointments and different wifi codes.
“I know where this is.”
“You do?” Steve seemed surprised. They’d given him the address three days ago with no instruction on how to find it. They just told him something about Google Maps. Whatever a Google was.
You nodded. “It looks kinda old.”
Steve shrugged. “‘Guess it’s their way of giving me some familiarity.”
You shook your head. “When do you move in?”
“End of the week.”
“I’ve got a meeting in the morning, but I can take the rest of the day – help you move in, if you’d like.”
Steve looked at you. “You’d really do that for me?”
You handed his document back and nodded. “I would. Just because you were given an image for them to control, doesn’t mean that they should take advantage of the person you are behind it all.”
“That’s really kind of you, ma’am.”
You smiled. “Don’t mention it.”
For an hour more, you and Steve just talked. Filled with quiet laughter and genuine smiles, you and Steve found an unlikely friendship in each other that evening.
A friendship that would only grow stronger and stronger over the years.
At the end of that week, you met Steve outside the SI building before walking with him towards the underground and pointing out different landmarks for him to recognise. A university campus, a museum, a deli store that served the best sandwiches. You explained about the times for the trains that headed towards the different states. Finally, walking down the different streets, Steve started to recognise a few different places. New businesses stood in their places, but the bricks around them were the same.
“Pretty sure I got beat up in that alley.”
You followed Steve’s eye-line before looking back at him. “Bet your mom was beside herself with the amount of times you came home with a black eye.”
Steve held a reminiscent smile on his face as he looked at his shoes. “Just a kid from Brooklyn who was too dumb enough to run away from the fight.”
You watched Steve for a moment; something in his tone told you those weren’t just his words.
“Come on, we’re almost there.”
You took Steve’s hand, leading him down the street before you both arrived at the apartment block. A couple of younger kids were playing out in the street, kicking a football around until they scored it round the corner of the building, one of their mother’s yelling to play in the back.
A guy with a coffee cart served passers by heading back from their lunch break, on the corner.
Unlocking the front door, you and Steve walked up the first few flights of stairs before finally reaching his new home.
As Steve opened up the door and walked inside, he was met with a living space that probably hadn’t had someone live there…maybe ever. The furniture seemed old, the kitchen table was rusting a little at the bottom of the legs and the curtains had seen better days.
A few boxes had been stacked by the entrance way with different labels scribbled on them.
You rifled through them. “Bed sheets, books, clothes.”
You took a note of the size label. “You know, I think one of my friends might have some clothes you’d like. She runs a clothing company that does everything from a vintage style to modern day. I’m sure she’d love to let you rifle through her products; see if there’s anything you’d like to take off her hands.”
You turned around but Steve hadn’t been listening. Instead, he’d been focusing on the case files that were strewn across the kitchen table.
Standing beside him, keeping your eye on his reactions, you looked down at the table before you came across a picture. You had to take a breath.
Steve had told you a little about his friends from the war. The Howling Commandos.
“Is that them?”
Steve nodded.
It took Steve a while to get used to his new apartment, but with your help, he found it becoming a home. You helped him change the bedsheets and work out his washing machine before putting your phone number into his phone.
“Think of it like a telegram,” you told him. “But rather than waiting weeks to hear back, it’s almost instantly.”
In the weeks that followed, you met Steve at his apartment every few days. On the weekends, you showed him around some of the thrift stores where he’d found a new kitchen table and some dishes to use in the kitchen.
One of your friends – the same friend that ran a clothing company – had delivered some new curtains. They were plain, but they were better than the ones Steve had been left with.
Meanwhile, Steve found an old gym where he could spend his evenings and, with your help, had figured out the basics of a phone and computer.
The one Shield had given him was far too high tech, even for you. So, you had brought Steve one of your old ones. It was still pretty modern, but it was a lot simpler to use than the Stark Industries issued one.
Then he got pulled into helping Shield with a threat that, to him, would have been best left in the ocean.
News reports came in thick and fast during the attack on New York. You hadn’t heard from Steve during it, until you nearly ran into him in the middle of the street as mechanical…whatever the hell they were, were flying through the sky.
“Why are you still in the city?! Everyone needs to get out.”
You nodded. “I know, but people needed help.” You looked down at his shield. “You know how to use that?”
Steve nodded.
“Can you break a lock with it?”
Steve followed you as you ran down an alley before disappearing around the corner and to an employee entrance. Neither you or Steve could tell what had welded a lock shut, but considering some kind of blue weapon lay not too far out in the middle of the street with similar residue being left of the door, you could only gather it had been some alien technology.
It took a few tries but the lock finally busted open and a bunch of parents with their kids came flooding out of the doors. As you and Steve started directing people to safety out of the city, you saw the way the kids looked up at Steve.
The whole image of Captain America had been controlled by the government, making him an image away from Steve Rogers. But nothing could control the way those kids looked up at Steve as their hero.
A comic book hero that existed in real life.
“Ma’am, is that everyone?” Steve asked one of the women that left the room.
She seemed distressed as she looked around. “I-I think so.” Then she ran off with the others.
Something in your gut told you to check the rest of the room, and Steve followed you inside.
“Go! Help the others! I can look after myself.”
“But-”
“Steve.” You looked at him. “Go. They need you.”
It took him a minute but he took your word for it and ran back out of the door. Meanwhile, you checked under every table and desk before something caught your eye at the side of one of the cabinets.
A kid, no older than six.
“Hey, honey.”
“Mommy was meant to pick me up.”
You looked around, hearing something hit a building nearby.
“I’ll help you look for her. Can I pick you up?” The kid nodded. “I’m Y/n, what’s your name?”
“Sophie.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Sophie. Come on, let's go and find your mom.”
After three hours of destruction over the city, and countless injuries being collected by people, it wasn’t until a mom came running through the crowds of EMTs and doctors, screaming out for her child that you and Sophie, sitting in the back of an ambulance, looked up.
And Sophie called out.
Jumping from the bench, Sophie looked outside and saw her mom running through the crowd. You watched as they collided and sank to the ground.
“I’m so sorry, baby. Are you okay? Are you hurt? Why aren’t you with the rest of your class? Where are they?”
“Hey,” you said, walking behind Sophie. “They got separated when trying to clear the city.”
“Did you save her?”
“I got her out-” Suddenly, the mom crushed you with a hug.
“Thank you. Thank you so much. I don’t know what I-” The tears continued to flow from her eyes.
“It’s alright. All that matters is that she’s safe.”
“Thank you so much.”
Hours later, you had finally made it back home, had showered and switched your TV on. The news had been following updates and different people’s theories of what had happened.
Then a knock came to your door.
Upon opening it, you were greeted with a fresher looking Steve Rogers.
“Shouldn’t you be with a medic?”
Steve smiled, “Shouldn’t you? Between the pair of us, I’m the one who has a serum running through their veins.”
You looked in his hand. “Is that a pizza?”
Steve nodded. “Didn’t know which kind you’d like, so I got the classic. Figured you haven’t eaten since yesterday.”
Inviting him inside, Steve laid it on the coffee table.
“Shouldn’t you be helping The Avengers or something?”
“Avengers?” Steve looked at you with a curious look.
You just pointed at the screen. “Oh, right. Yeah, we’ve all decided to take a break. But Shield tells me they’ve finally found me a job.”
“That’s something to celebrate.”
Steve shrugged. “Kinda hard to celebrate when an entire city almost got levelled to the ground.”
You understood. “I’m gonna head back tomorrow and see if they need any help.”
“Can I come with you?”
“You don’t have to ask, Steve.”
He smiled, if a little sheepishly.
For the rest of the evening, you and Steve shared a pizza and talked until neither of you wanted to say anything else.
So, you picked out a film and placed it into the DVD player. And you and Steve just sat and watched it.
As the months passed, you and Steve slipped into a familiar routine. He got better at texting, but you’d come to find he preferred to call. And during the days he was at the training facility in Washington and devoid of signal, he’d write you letters.
And you wrote them back.
He’d also started keeping a list, you’d noticed, of things you’d say in passing or you’d tell him to listen to or watch.
On the quiet afternoons you spent together, Steve would open up more. He told you more about the 40s and being in the army. He told you more about his childhood and his best friend, Bucky.
You’d surprised him one afternoon by taking him to the Smithsonian. They had a new exhibit put up – one pillar being dedicated to Bucky and his friendship with Steve.
In one of his final letters, he’d told you of a man he’d basically been trolling on his morning runs. You’d come to find out his name and you smiled.
Outside of you and the members of his team, Sam Wilson was the first friend Steve had made.
However, you didn’t get to meet him in person until you got a call from him, under Steve’s contact. Of course, the minute the headline had flashed on your screen, you’d tried to get into contact with him. He’d fallen, or rather, jumped, from an elevator and fallen a hundred feet or more to the ground. His own work seemed to be after him.
So, when you were told he’d fallen, once more, from one of the jets and had been in surgery, you rushed to him.
Entering his room, Natasha had been the one to take you to his room after two nurses read your name on his file but wouldn’t let you through.
“He’s alive, as you can see.”
“If I get a call like this again, telling me you’re dead, I’ll kill you myself.” You warned Steve before you walked to his side. The bastard had the audacity to chuckle.
“I promise. If I’m gonna die, I’ll ask your permission first.”
From behind you, you heard a voice smile. “I like her.”
“Y/n, this is Sam. Sam, this is Y/n.”
From that day on, the movie and pizza nights came to include both Sam and Natasha. However, unbeknownst to you and Steve, the movie nights also came to include the rest of the team.
Natasha had been trained to read people. And she’d never read anyone easier than you and Steve.
And her information soon became Clint’s information which soon became everyone’s information when he accidentally let it slip to the others.
Tony had been planning a party. Rather, he wanted to throw one and Pepper had come up with a list of people to invite. And when she read out your name, Steve had looked up but Clint had spoken first.
“Is that Steve’s girl?”
They all looked around at each other before looking at Steve. He had a girl?
Steve faltered. “Yes, well, no. She’s my friend. We’re friends but-”
Tony turned to Pepper. “Invite Steve’s girlfriend.”
“She’s not my girlfriend. We’re just friends. And she doesn’t really like big parties so-”
“Invite her anyway. I can’t believe Clint knows about her before we do.” Then he turned to Natasha. “I suppose you already knew.”
She just nodded.
And that was just the start of it.
A few nights later, Steve had given you a heads up which you appreciated but it did put you on edge a little. But all in all, it was…fun.
It was the first time you enjoyed yourself at a party and didn’t hate every minute of it.
Firstly, the attire was fancy but not gala fancy. It was a celebration of Hydra finally being overthrown from Shield.
You arrived in your heels that didn’t hurt your feet so much, wide legged trousers and a graphic t-shirt.
“Now, who is that?”
At the bar, Rhodey, Thor, Tony and Maria all stood watching as you entered the room, clearly looking for someone. Tony and Rhodey had met most of the building at the party. Maria had met them all – at the very least, she had a file on them all.
But not on you.
From behind the bar, Natasha leaned over. “That’s Steve’s girl.”
From the bar they watched as Sam noticed you first and called you over. You looked relieved at seeing a familiar face. Even more relieved at seeing Steve. Tony watched as Steve noticed you, too.
The game of pool Steve had been winning at suddenly took a dip as his aim went off kilter, his attention immediately going to you.
“Steve has a woman?” Thor asked, the other just nodded. “Well, we must meet her.”
However, as they all went to walk towards the pool table, Maria reached her hand out. “You boys swarm her, Steve will make sure you never get to speak to her again. I will go.”
And so she did.
The others watched on as Steve introduced you to Maria, every protective instinct a man got when introducing his girlfriend to the rest of his family going up. And somehow, with simple ease, Maria had gained a small part of your friendship and led you towards the second bar.
Meanwhile, Steve watched as you walked away, the heart in his eyes never leaving. Not even when Sam nudged him and they got back to the game.
Throughout the night, Steve kept his eye on you.
He almost broke the sound barrier by how quickly he turned up at your side when you were dragged into the conversation circle with most of them.
“So, tell me.” Tony said, sitting beside you. “How did you meet our fellow Captain?”
“Tony.” Steve warned, though no true malice could be traced in his voice.
You smiled. “It’s okay. We actually met at one of your parties.”
Tony sat back. “Really?”
You nodded. “Some fancy gala a few years back.”
Conversation between yourself and the rest of the group seemed to take a natural flow until eventually, all your nerves had subsided.
But that didn’t stop you from needing a break by the end. Between talking with Natasha, Maria and Thor for most of the night, and beating Sam at a few rounds of pool – something Steve found incredibly entertaining,
Tony had backed Sam on his idea that you were cheating. Nobody won that many rounds of pool one after the other. So, as the others gathered and watched the game, Steve stepped forward and he covered your eyes.
For a moment you looked up at him and smirked, and he smiled back with a light shrug of his shoulders.
“Yes, thank you, Cap.” Sam said. “See. This will prove that she’s cheat-”
As you hit the white cue ball, everyone watched and was left speechless as every ball suddenly found its home in the pockets, leaving you with an automatic victory.
Opening your eyes once more and standing up, you looked at the pool table with a proud look before looking at Sam. You’d never seen him as shocked. Looking at Steve, he seemed shocked but also proud.
“Still think I’m cheating?”
Tony just looked at you. “She’s a witch. She had to be. Were you cursed as a child? Born to some Vampire in Europe or something?”
Steve chuckled, as did you.
“Come on, Tony. Accept your defeat.”
As the hours passed, eventually you found yourself outside on the balcony, taking a breather from the party.
“Figured you’d find some place quiet.”
You stood back up, holding onto the balcony bar. “Hey.”
Steve smiled. “Hey. You okay? They can be a bit much.”
You shook your head. “No, it’s not that. Just needed a minute. You know, this is the first time I’ve enjoyed myself at one of these?”
Steve looked up at the building before looking back at you with a smile on his face. “It is better when people aren’t trying to show you off.”
You nodded with a smile. “Thank you for inviting me.”
“Thank you for escaping the last one and finding me in that room.”
It was in that moment that you realised the last time you’d gone to any kind of gala or party of the same scale was the first time you’d met Steve.
You smiled fondly at the memory. “Thanks for not being mad when I opened the door.”
“I could never be mad at you.”
“You didn’t even know me.”
Steve shrugged. “I’ve got a good judge of character.”
You felt yourself chuckle before you looked out across the rest of the city before a cold wind blew through making you shiver.
“Here,” Steve shrugged off his jacket but before you could tell him you were fine, he placed it over your shoulders.
It smelt of him.
“Thanks.”
Steve just nodded with a smile watching as you placed your arms through the holes and wrapped it a little tighter around yourself before you looked out at the rest of the city with him.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Anything.”
“Is something going on between Maria and Sam?”
Steve couldn’t help but laugh. “She’ll eat him alive.”
“He might be into that.”
Steve laughed and closed his eyes in disgust. “What makes you ask?”
You shrugged. “Just something I’ve noticed. He looks at her like she hung the moon. Though, of course, that’s when she’s not looking. When she is, it's like I’m back at school rehearsing for Much Ado About Nothing.”
Steve’s joy widened. “You were in a play?”
You laughed. “I wasn’t any good. I was only put on stage because my folks donated so much money to the school. All I wanted was to work with Tech.”
Steve chuckled. “I’d pay good money to see that. But, I get what you mean about Sam and Maria. Who knows? If the timing is right…”
Steve looked at you and you felt something bigger was being hidden behind his words. Part of you certainly held out hope that there was.
“We should probably get back inside.”
An hour later, most people had gone home so it was left with just Steve, yourself, Clint, Natasha, Bruce, Maria, Tony, Rhodey and Thor.
Still wearing Steve’s jacket, you were sitting in the middle of the sofa, your legs curled towards your chest. After he stood up, Steve came back and handed you a beer before he nudged your legs allowing him room to sit down before he pulled them across his lap.
It was the standard procedure for you and him to sit on a sofa together. Mainly because his sofa in his old apartment had been small enough to do so.
Despite changing apartments and the sofa, it was just something that stuck.
The others took silent note of it as the debate continued between Thor and Clint over his hammer.
By the time everyone was trying to lift it, Steve became one of the last. Sharing a look with you before looking at Thor, Steve stood up and tried to lift it.
You watched as it squeaked on the table for a moment, but moved no further. However, your knowing grin – despite it never truly lifting from the table – caused you to look at Thor.
He looked panic stricken.
But Steve stood back and held his hands up.
“Or…you’re all not worthy.”
“It’s still a trick!”
In the moments that followed, everyone turned to their own conversations; including you and Steve.
But Clint and Natasha kept their eyes on you and Steve. Your legs over his lap, wearing his jacket, his focus solely on you, his hand rubbing lightly against the bottom of your leg that was exposed under your wide-legged trousers, your ever loving gaze on his that matched yours, light and soft smiles on your faces.
“Ten bucks says they’ll be married in two years.” Clint whispered up to Natasha.
“Deal.”
Something that Clint didn’t know, that Natasha did, was that you and Steve were fucking oblivious.
They’d all be lucky if it happened in two years.
Quite frankly, it should have happened two years ago.
Suddenly, a high pitched noise rippled through the room.
“Of course you’re not all worthy…”
Your eyes landed on an oil leaking…zombie robot?
His voice was deep and menacing and nothing about any of it felt comforting.
“Steve?”
“Stark?”
“Jarvis?”
In a single turn of events you’d gone from laughing and joking with each other to suddenly defending yourself against a robot who claimed he’d killed someone.
A swarm of them flew in through broken glass panels and Steve kicked up a table before any of them could hit either of you.
You landed on the floor beside him, a little winded.
“Are you okay?”
You nodded. “I’m okay. Go, go, go. I’ll be fine.”
Steve helped you up before running off in the other direction. It was a whirlwind of blasts, bullets and shattered glass.
At one point, one had you cornered as Tony unhooked another. And for a moment, you thought you’d be sent flying out of the window and out into the open before Steve took hold of it, throwing it back towards Thor before Clint threw him his shield.
And it all ended as Thor sent his hammer flying through Ultron.
“What the fuck was that?”
“Banner.” Tony called him over before they headed towards their lab.
Meanwhile, Steve turned around before heading straight towards you and holding you in his arms, almost lifting you from the ground.
“Are you okay?”
You nodded, letting the scent of him, his clothes, his jacket, calm you.
“Yeah. Thanks for saving my life.”
Steve truly breathed for the first time since the high pitched noise had rang through the room. With a hand at the back of your head, he pressed a kiss to your temple and he closed his eyes.
“Come on, let's go and find the others.”
However, as he took your hand, you pulled him back. “Steve.”
“Right, you-you’ll want to go home-”
You shook your head. “It’s not that. You’ve got glass in your arm.”
“Oh.”
“Does Tony have tweezers in his lab?”
Steve nodded. “I think so.”
Less than five minutes later, you sat Steve in one of the chairs, Bruce handing you and Maria a set of tweezers each.
Staring with his arm, you plucked out the small fragments of glass before his skin healed over them, before holding his palm up to face you. Meanwhile, they began discussing the extinction of The Avengers and the possibility of nuclear codes getting out to the rest of the world.
Then rage got passed around the room.
By the time morning rolled around, Steve drove you back home.
“Whatever happens…” You looked at Steve, a small voice in the back of your head begging for him to be imprinted in your memory as if he hadn’t already. “Just promise me you’ll be careful.”
Steve nodded. “I promise. You’re the only one that can kill me, remember?”
You felt yourself laugh. At least he remembered.
Looking at him again, you hugged him. “I mean it, Steve. Please be safe.”
He hugged you back, the feeling of him strong enough for you to still feel hours later.
“I promise.”
Each day you didn’t hear from him was a little more worrisome than the last. And then when the media reported Shield helping evacuate people from a floating country…all you could do was hope Steve wasn’t one of the casualties.
“Maybe I’ll take a leaf out of Barton’s book.”
“The simple life?”
“You’ll get there one day. Maybe you could get there with Y/n?”
Steve couldn’t deny he hadn’t thought about it once or twice. You and him. Together. More than friends. A part of him did think you felt it too. The same spark. Familiarity. The same love.
“If something was gonna happen, it would have happened by now.” Steve told him. “Besides, I think the guy that wanted all that went into the ice seventy five years ago.”
Tony shrugged. “Don’t count on it. That guy is still there somewhere. See you ‘round, Rogers.”
As Tony drove away, Steve took in the building in front of him. And despite the acceptance he felt of being home, the idea of you and him…he figured that would always be with him.
Even if it never happened.
That night, Steve turned up outside your apartment with the next movie on his list and a case of soda. However, when you didn’t answer, he went in search of you.
Opening the door to the roof, he looked around before spotting you in the very corner, sitting on the table of the picnic bench.
“Penny for your thoughts?”
Looking around, you gave a sigh of relief at seeing him. He dropped the case on the table before you reached for him.
“Thank god you’re okay.”
“How long have you been up here?”
“Since Nat called me and told me you’d landed. I couldn’t sit in my apartment anymore so…I came up here. Last time I looked out at the city was before everything went to hell.”
Steve looked out at the city himself before looking back at you. “We’re not out of the woods yet. Ross is probably about to reign hellfire down on…everyone.”
“What about the girl?”
“Wanda?”
You nodded.
“I don’t know. She went through a lot, losing her home and her brother in one fowl sweep.”
“You should train her.”
“What?”
“Train her,” you repeated. “You’re the only one who knows what it’s like to be in a war, to sign up to be experimented on. She’s gonna need someone who actually understands some of what she’s going through.”
Steve agreed with you. You had a point.
“Tony can have a lot of influence and his heart can be in the right place but he doesn’t always remember that people didn’t have his childhood or his life.”
“He’s been through a lot.”
You agreed with Steve. “He has. But he’s never lost a brother, or his life to somebody’s cause. She’s gonna need help.”
“I’ll see what I can do.”
The rest of the evening was spent talking over what had happened, what Steve had thought when the earth quite literally started to lift from beneath him, what had happened with Banner and Nat and then you gave him your news.
Bucky had been spotted.
The next time you saw Steve was at Agent Peggy Carter’s funeral. You sat at the back for most of it, watching as Steve helped carry the coffin and as people gave their eulogies.
You didn't know much about Peggy Carter personally, though you could remember learning about her in school. The founder of Shield, working alongside Captain America in her early career. And from meeting Steve, you’d come to know more about her. As well as how deeply both she and Steve were in love.
You’d seen the clips at the museum, and with Steve beside you, it gave them a whole other meaning. And even though Steve living through the ice and landing himself in the 21st century had given you one of the greatest friendships you’d ever had, part of you felt angry for him.
Angry at the fact he missed out on his chance with Peggy and that she had to live a life where, as far as anyone knew, Steve was dead.
A soldier and a love story left stranded in time.
You could remember when Steve had first visited Peggy, again.
And now he had to say goodbye, again.
“It was a beautiful service.”
Steve looked up and down the aisle to where you were walking towards him. He felt the breath get knocked out of him. Or maybe back into him.
“Hey, what are you doing here?”
“Thought you could use a friendly face?”
A silent conversation then took place between you and Steve. Silent conversations weren’t unusual between you. A thousand words could be said in a look, but you’d both understand.
“I don’t know what’s gonna happen after I leave here-”
“No, I know. I know.” You understood completely. After he walked out of the church, Nat would be leaving without him.
“Today’s been a lot. Tomorrow’s gonna be a lot.” You looked back at Steve. “Right now can just be…right now. You’ve lost someone, Steve. Right now you don’t have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. You don’t have to be Captain America right now.” Your gaze turned to Peggy’s picture. “I might not have met her, but I know you and I both know she would be telling you, you don’t have to be Captain America right now. At this moment, you’re just Steve: World War Two veteran who has just lost a great love in their life and deserves a moment to breathe.”
Steve gave you a weak smile, his emotions building up in his chest. “Thank you.”
Stepping forward, you wrapped Steve in a comforting hug and for the next twenty minutes, you both stayed inside the church.
There he told you the smaller facts about Peggy – the ones he’d learnt when she was with him and his Howling Commandos.
But then the time came to leave.
Walking down the different streets, hearing time tick away, you and Steve soaked up what time you could before everything was about to go to shit.
And on a bench beside the River Thames, you and Steve said your goodbyes. Both of you knew something was going to go wrong. What that was exactly, neither of you could put your finger on it. But something was going to happen.
It was only a matter of time.
“Here.”
“What’s this?”
Steve read the piece of paper. It was a set of coordinates.
“I own a house. It’s in the middle of nowhere, somewhere in Europe. If anything happens, Ross can’t touch you. The house had been in my family’s name for generations but one of my great aunt’s left it to me. It’s yours to use.”
“Y/n-”
“Take it, Steve. Nobody knows it exists so they won’t find you. It’s run down but there should be running water.”
Steve finally accepted it. “Thank you. You know, if Tony ever finds out about this, he’s gonna believe that you are a witch from a vampire family.”
You shrugged. “Maybe I am, you just don’t know it.”
Steve shrugged, pocketing the paper safely.
“I’m gonna miss you.”
You took his hand. “I’m gonna miss you, too.”
You tried your best to avoid the tears, but they were trying their hardest anyway.
“Just promise me one thing, Steve.”
Steve nodded, squeezing your hand a little tighter. “Be safe?”
You nodded. “Be safe.”
Your eyes locking with his, Steve decided to take a risk. There was a chance he might never be able to see you again. Whatever was going to happen, the first person they’d put a tail on would be you.
He kissed you.
With your hand on his lapel, you held him closer. It was short and bittersweet, but the memory of him and his kiss would forever be seared into your brain.
And for a few moments, you just held onto each other, fearful of opening your eyes and accepting that one of you would have to walk away.
With his finger, Steve gently brushed the stray hair from your face away and behind your ear before kissing you quickly for a second time.
“One of us has to say goodbye.”
“I know,” you sniffed. “I know.”
“If there’s one thing I’m grateful for, it's that you walked into that room when you did. You were the first person to treat me like one and to help me. Thank you for wanting to escape that party.”
You laughed through the tears. “You never have to thank me for that. It’s crazy to think I almost didn’t go.”
“I’m glad you did.”
“So am I.”
Looking at each other for one final time, you leaned in and kissed him. You prayed that his hand by your waist would leave a brand – a different pain to carry with you than the one in your heart.
Feeling yourself stand, the kiss broke away and you were the first to say goodbye.
Walking down the stone pavement, you looked behind you before you turned a corner, only to find Steve had already gone. Between the bustling people, the bench you’d both just been sitting at was exactly that.
A bench.
Going home, you tried to find a way to keep yourself busy but no matter where you looked, everything reminded you of him. The movies you’d watched with him, the ones you didn’t. The pizza’s shared, and soda spilt, the curtain, bedsheets, books, clothes, pictures.
You had some of his artwork in your house. Some of them people, most of landscapes – people and places you’d seen together.
And in an album under your bed, you had his letters.
Each one in its original envelope on one page and the pictures he’d drawn of the skyline from wherever he’d been.
Some evenings, you’d reread his letters – still able to hear his voice.
Then the headlines started to roll in.
Captain America was a fugitive and had broken his team out of a high secure facility.
And for almost two years a hunt was put on for him. You were interviewed every couple of months with the same questions.
Did you know where he was? Had he contacted you? What information did he share with you?
Just because you’d given him a set of coordinates didn’t mean he’d use them. The last time you’d heard from Steve was in London and the only information he’d shared with you that day was about Peggy Carter and some of the old stories of when he was first in London in the 40s.
In the meantime, your parents had convinced you to attend different dinner parties, charity shows, fundraisers and galas, all the while helping you find a date.
Most of the people your mother had first introduced you to years ago, they were recently married. But the single ones she’d found; you dated some, though it never went any further than a sixth date – usually the date after your parents invited them to attend dinner.
But no matter the fancy meal, or the conversation, or the man; none of them could beat a pizza, soda, a movie and…
Steve.
None of them could beat Steve.
But that all changed one afternoon when you were gardening.
Living in the city had reminded you too much of Steve, and with the constant reminders of the memories and new threats and superheroes popping up, you decided to find somewhere nice to live.
Someplace…simple.
So, buying a house outside of the city with a few acres of land, you started renovating. Any business meetings you had could be done online which meant you had more time to fix your new home up.
The smell of plaster, paint and sawdust filled your home for most of the days until finally things started to come together. New windows and locks were installed, the faulty taps were fixed and finally the entire place was given a new lease of life.
And just as you were half way through with fixing your garden; planting some flowers and digging patches for a small allotment, a car pulled up outside your drive.
On your knees in the dirt, it took a moment for your eyes to focus on the person climbing out of the car in the distance.
They were tall, broad and had a beard.
However, the closer they got, memories started to kick in. The walk, the frame…
You stood up and walked closer until you stopped again, feeling the breath being knocked out of you.
“Oh, my god…”
He watched as you stopped in your tracks, your brain confirming who he was. Then you started running. Across the grass and onto the gravel path, you collided with Steve.
“This is you, I’m not dreaming, am I?”
Steve shook his head and he held onto you, the essence of you filling his senses.
“No, you’re not dreaming.”
You leaned back and looked at him before hugging him again.
Finally, Steve set you back onto your feet and his hands remained at your waist.
“Why are you back? Last I heard…”
“The team and I are keeping our distance for a few days. Nat’s headed to Ohio and Sam is trying to see his sister. It’s the best way to avoid Ross.”
You nodded, checking him over. He didn’t seem like he was dying.
With a hand on his cheek, you smiled a little, pointing out the obvious. “You grew a beard.”
Steve smiled a little. “Helps me blend in.”
You looked into his eyes and smiled. “It suits you.”
Holding gently onto your wrist, Steve turned his head and kissed your palm and for a second you closed your eyes, leaning into him.
“I’m really glad you’re okay.”
Placing your hand over his heart, Steve seemed to bear into your soul. “So am I.”
What followed was two hours of conversation around where he’d been and what he’d been doing since he left, and what you had been doing.
Then he started to help. Painting the porch on the back of the house as you continued planting in the back garden, you spent time together.
Time that was all too precious knowing he was on a clock.
“Where did you learn to cook?” You asked Steve as you helped him chop up veg.
With a smile on his face, Steve continued to prepare dinner. “I have a contact in Scotland. Their aunt runs a cafe and needed a few extra hands in the kitchen.”
As you helped Steve prepare dinner, you listened to the stories he’d gathered over his time away. Scotland, Spain, Germany, Italy, England, Poland, Norway, and many others.
Once dinner was finished, you started to clean up. But from the table, Steve looked at you standing by the sink in front of the window.
You’d never left his thoughts.
Sat on that bench in London, he watched you walk away and for a moment, he remained where he was. He didn’t know if he’d ever be able to see you again – not without heavy restrictions.
He wanted you so desperately to turn around, but if you did, he would have followed you. He would have stood up and ran after you.
So he left.
He left before you could look around, he left before he would stop fighting himself and follow you.
And each day he woke up, for the few moments in the morning where he would forget what had happened, where he would forget the world he’d been found in, he thought about you. He thought about calling you or writing you a letter. He thought about seeing you when he’d roll over in bed. But each time…
You weren’t there.
You weren’t with him.
You were at your home, thousands of miles from him.
And he had no way of talking to you.
Walking across the kitchen floor to you, he placed a hand on your waist before reaching across to the window cill.
“What are you doing?” You smiled.
Looking at you and turning up the dial, Steve smiled. “Come with me.”
Taking the cloth from your hand, Steve dropped it back into the bowl of soapy water and took your hand in his. Then, pulling you into the middle of the kitchen with him, you both started to slow dance.
“What’s this for?”
Steve shrugged, holding your hand over his heart once again. “I don’t know how long I’ve got with you. Figured we could spend it not washing up.”
You felt yourself smile. “I think I like that.”
It was soft and slow. Swaying with the beat until the radio turned static, you and Steve remained in each other's arms.
“Can you stay the night?”
Steve nodded.
“Good.”
The night soon settled over your home, the stars slowly emerging from behind the clouds. With your porch taking on a blue hue in its own shadow, you and Steve sat side by side on your porch swing.
Your hair still a little damp from your shower, Steve continued to run his fingers through it. And with your head on his chest, you let his heart beat calm you. For a moment, Steve turned his nose into your hair and pressed a kiss to the top of your head.
After a few moments, he didn’t say anything. Not that you would have heard anything considering your body was begging for sleep.
Carefully standing, Steve slipped one of his arms around your back and one under your legs before carrying you inside. He tucked you under your bed covers before making his rounds, locking up the doors and windows. Finally, he got in beside you.
For years, he’d dreamed of it.
Being with you, by your side, a domestic and loving day before laying beside you knowing he would be waking up beside you every morning.
And Steve smiled as in your sleep you moved closer to him, your arms wrapping across his middle.
You couldn’t remember when you’d gone from the porch to your bed, but you could remember Steve. Feeling his arms around you, his heartbeat under your cheek, his lips on yours…
“Hey,”
Steve was sitting on the edge of the bed by your legs, fully dressed.
“Hey, what time is it?”
Steve kept his eyes on you. “A little after four.”
You gave a groan and closed your eyes again. Steve chuckled. Reaching out, he gently swept the hair from your eyes, your head turning towards him. With his hand on your cheek, he felt your smile.
It was your turn to hold onto him and kiss his palm.
And just as the knowing sadness started to grow, Steve still smiled, leaning forward and kissed you.
You would never get bored of his kiss.
Peppering it out, you held onto his face before your hands slipped around his back and you held him closer.
With a sigh, Steve held you closer to him, trying to imprint the feeling of you in his arms.
Trying your best to ignore the growing tears, you spoke.
“Just promise me you’ll be safe?”
Steve chuckled a little. “You know you’re the only one who's allowed to kill me. But I promise.”
“Good.”
Holding on a little tighter, you silently begged for more time with him. But the clock was ticking.
From above, there was deep rumbling.
“You better go,” you told Steve.
It took him a moment before he let go and with one final kiss, it was his turn to say goodbye.
Hearing his boots walk across the floor of your bedroom, down the hallway, through the living room and towards your front door.
You heard his pause for a moment and in that moment, you wondered what he would do if you called out for him.
But he couldn’t stay any longer.
People needed him.
The world needed him.
Hearing your front door click open, Steve’s footsteps trailed off as it closed once more until eventually the only sound that was left was the ever quieting sound of a rumbling jet engine.
Six months later, half of the world disappeared.
With a snap of Thanos’ fingers, Steve watched as half of his team, his family, disappeared. And upon returning back to the Avengers’ compound, you were his first call.
Only, you never answered.
“Go.” Natasha told him.
He didn’t need to be told twice.
Making a break for it, Steve ran down into the garage before hopping on his bike. He’d made it to yours in half the time.
Pulling up, he started calling out for you. His voice filled with desperation and fear, he ran up to your front door.
It was unlocked.
He almost tripped inside as he tried the door, the hinges getting stuck.
“Y/N!”
He raced around your home; checking the kitchen, living room, pantry, washing room, office, bathroom, and the bedrooms before finally reaching yours.
The bedding was strewn a little, the soft lines of the fitted sheet folded into where you would have been laying. The pain in Steve’s chest seemed to grow heavier by the minute.
You weren’t here.
One hand on his hip, another covering his mouth, Steve turned around in a slow circle. Tears pricking at his eyes, his mind had gone from running a thousand miles a minute to…being completely overrun by pain.
He had nearly a thousand chances to be with you, to share a life with you that he’d always dreamed of – all before everything went to hell.
But it was too late.
You were gone.
Just like half of the world, you were gone.
Gripping onto the cold metal of your bed frame, Steve tried to steady himself.
You were gone.
Somewhere behind him, he heard a click.
His entire body stilled.
Slowly turning around he found…
No one.
Somewhere down the hall, a door closed.
As quietly as he could, Steve walked from your bedroom and down the hallway. The noises started to compile together.
Shoes shuffling, a bag being thrown onto a counter, a bucket handle rattling against itself.
From a corner, Steve saw an apron thrown across the back of a kitchen chair. A tap started to pour before someone switched it off.
Then someone started to hum.
You started to hum.
Fully stepping into the kitchen doorway, Steve felt the entire life get knocked back into him.
Then you turned around.
He scared the shit out of you.
The bucket slipping out of your hand, it knocked against your sink, the water spilling down the drain.
Just as it did, you recognised him.
Rushing forward, Steve enveloped you into his arms, your feet lifting from the ground.
“You’re alive,” you breathed.
“I thought you were gone.” Steve mumbled into your shoulder, holding onto you tighter.
“Steve, what’s going on?”
“He won.”
Steve set you back down on your feet and for the first time in almost seven months, you finally got a good look at him. He looked tired, worn. Beaten.
“We almost did it, but he won.”
“Whose left?”
Steve tried his best to name those who were left.
“We think Tony’s gone but we can’t be sure.”
The tears were falling from Steve’s cheeks as he told you. Wiping them away, you pulled him back into a hug.
“I tried calling you but when you didn’t answer…” You could feel Steve’s entire body shaking under you. “I thought I’d lost you, too.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t answer. Steve, honey, you need to sit down. Let me get you some water.”
As you sat him down, Steve watched as you moved around your kitchen. Grabbing a glass from the cupboard, running the tap until it was cold before handing it to him.
“I’ll make you some food. When did you last eat? You should call Nat.”
“Right.”
After calling and updating Nat, Steve hung up the phone. And for the next few hours, Steve talked you through everything he could; right up to him running through your door.
In the months that followed, a transition started to take place. People had to get used to a world where half of the people they loved were gone.
And somewhere between Steve finding you in your kitchen and Tony and Pepper having their daughter, yourself and Steve finally came together.
Properly.
This time there were no goodbye kisses and fear of never seeing each other again. That biggest fear had been and gone.
What you were left with was…acceptance.
Acceptance that you had both almost completely lost each other for good. There was no point in avoiding feelings, or being scared of what might happen.
You both had a chance at a life together.
So you both took it.
From then on your home with Steve became interchangeable between the Avengers compound and your house. Saving her from the lifetime supply of peanut butter sandwiches, you dragged Natasha when you could to your home with Steve and made her a decent meal.
Being out in the open also gave her a breath of fresh air away from the training facility walls that never changed colour.
And eventually things…settled.
People found a new way of life, coming back each year to celebrate those who were lost. And then new life was brought into the mix.
Not too long after Pepper had given birth to Morgan, you were faced with a positive pregnancy test result yourself.
And Natasha was your first call.
“What’s going on? I have an extra gun in the car if we need it.”
You showed it to her. “What does that show?”
“Holy shit, you’re pregnant.”
A small whimper left your lips as you handed her the test stick and started pacing around your bathroom.
“Are…are we not happy about that?”
You whimpered again as you paced up and down. “I-I don’t know. We-we haven’t planned anything. I mean, we’ve talked about it a few times but what if something goes wrong? Are you sure it was positive?”
Natasha looked back at it. “Well, it’s got a plus sign so-”
“It’s the third I’ve taken this week. The other two came up invalid but that one was like a bright flashing light.”
Reaching for you by the shoulders, Natasha sat you down. “Okay, first off, breathe.”
You did so.
And then some more.
“Okay. Here’s what we’re gonna do. I’m gonna go and get you another box of tests. Proper ones, not these things. And you’re gonna call Steve.”
“He’ll probably pass out. Why do you think I called you?”
Natasha laughed. “Just call him. I’ll be right back.”
And she was.
Walking back inside, she called out and Steve called back.
Three minutes later, you were all huddled in the bathroom waiting for the result to finally show.
“What if it’s a false positive? If it’s positive-positive, will I be able to carry the baby?”
Crouching down in front of you, Steve held your hand. “Whatever it is, we’ll figure it out. Together. Okay?”
You took a breath and nodded. Leaning up, Steve kissed you and you kissed him back.
You’d been having conversations about starting a family together for a while, but neither of you had started planning it just yet. Mostly because you hadn’t gotten around to it. And you didn’t know if you could even carry Steve’s kid. For all either of you knew, the serum would carry onto your child.
Natasha looked at her phone.
“It’s time.”
With a shaky breath, you and Steve stood. However, you paused as you reached for the test.
“Count me down.”
Steve chuckled softly, counting back from three.
After one, you turned it over.
Pregnant 3+ weeks
You felt yourself smile and laugh a little before showing Steve.
“You’re gonna be a dad.”
Taking the test from your hands, Steve took one look at it before the water-works started.
Nine months later, inside the Avengers compound, Natasha was walking with you.
“Once they started arguing over what the manual said, I made a break for it.”
Tony had surprised you and Steve at your home and after an hour, Steve had wrangled him in to help build the crib. It was the final thing that needed to be built and since Steve had banned you from lifting heavy things since you had elected to ignore your midwife and pushed the crib from the living room and into the nursery. You couldn’t help.
“Have you decided on a name yet?”
You shook your head. “Not yet.”
“Well, I might be biassed but Natasha is a really good name.”
You laughed a little. “I’ll think about it.”
Natasha smiled, holding onto your hand as she helped you down one of the narrower steps.
However, halfway around the building, you stopped.
“Everything okay?”
You nodded. “Just a bit of cramp.”
But it wasn’t just cramp.
Barely a second later, you felt water trail down your leg until there was a louder splash against the tiles.
“Oh, shit.”
You looked down. “Oh, my god.”
“Okay, okay. We’re okay.”
You nodded, taking hold of her hand as she walked you down the hall.
“Steve’s old room is just down the hall. Once we get you there-”
“Call him.”
“I know, I will.”
“No, call him now. Please.”
Twenty minutes later, Tony’s car was kicking gravel up and onto the windshield. Steve ran inside, nearly taking out a few employees on the way.
Almost fifteen hours later, a healthy baby girl was delivered.
With her in Steve’s arms, bundled in a fresh baby blanket, everyone stood around the bed.
“Only took you a decade.”
Steve chuckled, but he couldn’t tear his eyes away from his daughter. And neither could you.
And for almost four years, it was blissful.
As your daughter grew up, Steve told her stories and showed her pictures of the 40s. Even at the age of three, she seemed wise beyond her years.
Then one night, everything changed.
Recently, she hadn’t been sleeping. So, lay in bed with you whilst Steve was still at work, you told her a few bedtime stories but when Steve came in an hour or so later, he found her still awake.
“You should be asleep,” he whispered to her.
“I tried. Mommy fell asleep, though.”
Steve looked over and smiled. “Come on, let your mom sleep.”
Picking his daughter up, Steve carried her down the hall, leaving his jacket on the bed beside you. Making sure to close the door behind him, Steve started to talk to his daughter.
Their conversation eventually turned to someone from Steve’s past.
“Daddy, whose that?”
Steve looked at the photo. It was him and Bucky during his army days, though both were out of uniform and in civilian clothing. There weren't many pictures of Bucky in normal clothes.
“That’s Uncle Buck.”
“But he’s not in green.”
Steve chuckled. “You’re right, he’s not. That was when we were in London. Pinky, one of the Howling Commandos, decided to take us on a tour of London.”
“Wow.”
She was awe-struck.
“Does he know I was born?”
Steve felt a pang in his chest. “Maybe. I don’t know if he can hear me, but I’ve told him.”
“Would he like me?”
Steve smiled. “He’d love you.”
Kissing her temple, Steve sat down in one of the chairs. “Try and get some sleep.”
Steve himself must have fallen asleep because next thing he knew, you were waking him up. Your daughter was still fast asleep, he carried her to bed before you led him down the hall and he collapsed onto your shared bed.
The next time he woke up that morning, everything you both knew was about to change.
Time Travel.
There was a chance everyone could be brought back.
And after a long conversation, one that was overheard by your daughter who had been playing in the back garden with the family dog, Steve accepted what he had to do.
“You and Aunty Nat will have pictures again.”
Handing Steve a slightly mud scattered, crinkled, crayon drawing; your daughter had drawn a picture with everyone on it.
Herself, you, the dog, Steve, Nat, Bucky, Sam with his wings, Clint with his bow and arrow, Thor and his hammer, Tony, Bruce…the stick men with different items, standing on a green field with a corner sun, continued on and on.
It was that night you kissed Steve and he said what could have been his final goodbye to your daughter. She held onto him tightly, telling him she loved him. The only thing that carried him on his feet was the thought of going through what Scott was.
In the time he got stuck, he thought his daughter was gone.
Steve would have done anything to get his daughter back.
And it didn’t take much for him to remember the pain that washed through and over him when he thought he lost you.
Scott, like many others, had lost someone they loved. So had Steve. But he hadn’t lost you, though he thought he did.
People needed their families back.
And that’s what they got.
At the cost of Tony’s life.
After everything had settled, you drove as fast as you could to find Steve. And you found him far outside of the Avengers compound, crouched on the floor.
“Steve!? Steve!”
Looking up, he spotted you amongst the grey smoke. A shining light in the darkness.
Running as fast as you could, you eventually reached him.
“I couldn’t wait any longer. I needed to know if you were okay. Are you okay?”
Steve’s voice was quiet. “He’s gone.”
“Gone? Who’s gone?”
Steve’s voice broke. “T-tony. Tony’s gone.”
“Oh, my god.”
As Steve hugged you, you held him as tightly as you could. He asked about your daughter.
“She’s with my dad back home. She’s safe. She just needs a cuddle from her dad.”
Steve nodded. “I think I need one from her, too.”
Two weeks later, Steve brought Bucky and Sam home.
“Honey, come here.” Your daughter ran to her dad’s side. “Sam, Buck. I’d like you to meet Aurora. Rory, honey, this is Sam and Bucky.”
Sam knelt down and shook her hand. “It’s nice to finally meet you, miss.”
Meanwhile, Bucky was in pure shock. Slowly, he knelt beside Sam and Bucky felt his life flash before his eyes.
“Steve…she looks like your mom.”
As Rory studied Bucky, she decided to hug him. Sam smiled and so did you and Steve. And eventually Bucky hugged her back, frightened he might break her.
“Can I show them my room?”
The consensus was yes and whilst Sam was dragged towards her bedroom, Rory shouting for you to follow, Bucky and Steve followed behind.
Inside her room, her walls were covered in different pictures she’d drawn of the different stories Steve had told her. Of course, most of them were stick men, but the message was still clear.
A week later, a funeral was held for Tony and the Stones had to be returned.
Standing beside Bucky as Steve stood on the platform, Aurora stood and waited in between both of you.
And in what was a few seconds later, Steve returned with Natasha by his side.
Aurora gasped and bolted forward.
“Aunty Nat!”
“Careful, kiddo.” Steve warned just before Aurora collided with her, but Natasha shook her head.
“It’s okay.”
Lifting her into her arms, she hugged her tightly.
“You’re back.”
Natasha smiled. “Thanks to your dad.”
Looking at her dad, she smiled before hugging Natasha again.
“I’ll be back in a minute.”
Natasha nodded and carried Rory back towards you before everyone started running over. Meanwhile, you watched as Steve walked over to Sam.
Ten minutes later, your daughter bolted from the crowd and towards her dad who was finally out of his protection suit.
“I missed you.”
“I missed you, too.”
Seeing you again, Steve kissed you before kissing Rory’s cheek.
“Everything okay?”
Steve watched as Fury made his way over to Sam, and he smiled.
“Everything’s good.”
Kissing you again, Steve smiled. “Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For walking into that room when you did.” Steve told you. “I’m just sorry it took me so long to do something about it.”
You shook your head, looking from him to your daughter and back to him. “It happened when it was meant to.”
Steve smiled before he kissed you. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
Tony was right; Steve found the life with you he’d always wanted, even if it did take him a decade to do something about it.

Since I promised to not leave you bored this weekend and next week, and because I still feel like a pest, I'll send my suggestions here.
1. Vampires. No, don't you dare close this window! You revived my brain worms for this AU, it's only fair I give some to you. Maybe with Chan. Probably with Chan. Unless you get a spicy idea, uh, then not with Chan. Just please, write something in this AU. Can be where both members are vampires or one is a human (or something else, who knows), I don't care. I just need to read some vampire stuff in your style, you don't understand. I'll even act cute in return, I'm not below it, please-
2. Don't remember if I've suggested something in the Hybrid AU before, but before you get weirded out or start crying, I only want the fluffiness it can give to a story. Okay you probably knew that since it's me we're talking about, but still. I can never be too sure. Either way, how about some bunny or cat hybrid Minho who is absolutely adored and cared for by someone else? (Knowing you, it will be Chan, haha.) He needs some love now and we both know why.
3. Since I'm on an AU roll, might as well suggest another one where Felix is a mermaid! Don't care who you pair him up with, I'll completely leave it up to you so you'll have some freedom too. But think about the story. He could have found a pretty human he was enamoured by (maybe he likes pretty/shiny things and collects them, even decorates his body with them?) OR he found another pretty mythical creature. Maybe a mermaid, maybe a siren (who is their predator so that creates complications). Lots of possibilities :)
4. Lastly, to not give you an aneurysm, I'll give you a normal suggestion. MinChan where Chan is an absolute sweetheart to Minho, who worries over a comeback and nearly overworks himself? We both know why I suggested it.
If you mention hospitals even once consider my offer to act cute nullified. This is a threat.
Have fun.
ohhh I love them, hehe thank you, dear!! Sooo let's do a poll on what I should start with?👀😇🖤🖤

Sooo...would it be possible for you to do some Pureshadow fics,or have the brainworms for that ship not settled in yet?
Fic example if you do wanna do one:Shadow Milk's thoughts at the creation of Truthless Recluse(Like that one fic you wrote called "This Hurtson AO3).
Oh trust me, the brain worms are rattling around in there lol. I have ideas, sfw and... not so much lol. I haven't gotten to them yet bc:
First and foremost, I really want to update my most recent BurningCheese fic. Two weeks with no chapter 2, even though the outline has been done for way longer than that. Annoys the hell out of me personally
My vacation is over, gotta go back to my normal life again. Which includes going out and working lol. Don't have much time to write anyway (or I guess that's where my insomnia might help me 😅😅😅)
I kind of hate saying this, but I'm a little worried/afraid that I won't do Shadow Milk justice. Like I'll write him "wrong". I've read a few PureShadow fics already (been loving the PureShadow content explosion recently lol, BeastAncient shippers stay winning) and they're fantastic. But they make me think "ah shit, I can't compete with that" lol. But I'll get over it and write something eventually
But rest assured, citizen, I DO have fics planned and they WILL see the light of day! Just need time and preparation, that's all. Promise

All the important Pazzi moments from the Pookie Live!
****
Paige and Azzi are probs in bed, cuddled up, together because Drew made sure to keep the cameras off that side of the room.
A: I need to rotate. P: Sounds like she gives Azzi a love tap on the butt
****
D: Only Azzi’s my pookie
A: Period. Drew only your my pookie
D: hmmhmm (Agrees with Azzi before giving Paige a mocking look. Such a little sibling thing to do)
I: (Chuckles) Jealous! (Directed towards Paige because she’s a menace and will stay exposing them. We love you Ice!)
P: We Are On Live! (Paige you just exposed yourself even more 😂)
****
P: You want Cava?
A: I have chicken parm at home
P MeeeeeMeeeMeee (Okay, sassy P!)
D: She is not going to mess up my order (Not the bacon cheese burger!)
A: You tell her pookie… she is not going to mess your order up (I love how Azzi and Drew team up together to tease Paige. It’s so cute and funny. I just know Paige was so over them)
P: Sounds like Paige gives Azzi another love tap on the butt. We all know how much Paige loves Azzi’s butt - even that boy on the cruise knows 😂)
They start talking about what kind of rice Azzi gets at Cava. Lover girl, P just wanted to get her girl food, because she hadn’t eaten all day…even at the expense of her own brother lol
***
P: Are you coming to the game?
A: Yep
P: Why didn’t you answer that when I texted you? (*insert pouty voice*)
A: Because I am part of the game (Okay, sassy Azzi… I see you)
Drew muted the live so fast which makes me think they started bickering more.
*** Insert 🧜🏽‍♀️ recount! You ate with that!
P: I’m not on that side of TikTok
A: Is this cava?
P: Just don’t even talk to me, okay? (Paige was done with Azzi’s indecisiveness… I have a feeling this happens a lot with them and then they kiss and make up. Also, this is such a relationship/domestic like convo/argument)
A:  Are you getting Cava?
P: I’m trynna see…[think she says, my order] (*insert little frustrated voice*)
A: Pouts or something (I agree, this was probably the likely scenario)
P: It’s okay mami…I just wanna end my order
THEY KISS - a long kiss to make up! Drew looks at Ice and then looks away. We hear a couple of little kisses (Pack it up lesbians! Not in front of the children lol)
A: I love you
P: I love you the MOST! (They are so soft which each other 🥺)
***
P: Ooo oww… I promise (Wonder what she’s promising too. Also, lowkey think Azzi bit her like in the other ice live with KK and KK’s cousin, which is why Paige says ow)
A: But you were wrong (Azzi putting Paige in her place 👀 She’s definitely the one in charge)
P: Yes (*insert blush and soft voice*)…they kiss again.
Paige tells Drew to end the live
my anon's brains 💆‍♀️ yall are so smart and good. i remember that ice live yeahhh they can't be together on live i fear....also i forgot to post about this last night but i think "i love you most/miss you most" is a very common thing p and a say to each other because in the aubrey live one of my anons dissected aubrey says "i just wanna say i miss you" and paige giggles and goes "i miss you the most". and at the time they were making fun of azzi soooooo.... it's like the team knows they say it to each other all the time and wanna make fun of them for it hmmm gfs

Tags: No outbreak!AU. Coffee shop meet-cute with a slow-ish burn. Sickly sweet fluff, some angst and eventual smut. Joel is 42, reader is mid 30s. Sarah is 19. No use of Y/N, minimal descriptions of reader. She has hair long enough to tie back, wears skirts and dresses, blushes and wears makeup.
Chapter Warnings: descriptions of anxiety/ panic, angst, infidelity (not by Joel or reader), brief mention of narcissistic behaviour/ abuse (not by Joel or reader) bereavement, alcohol as a coping mechanism (not in any detail) brief mention of hospitals and death (not in any detail)
A/N: There’s a lot of anxiety in this chapter and a big dollop of angst as well, poor reader has been through it. Honestly, is still going through it. We’re nearing the end of the slow part of the burn, I promise. I wanted to do this chapter justice, and give reader’s past some time to be explored. Just a little further and it’s back to Joel and reader fluffy fun times for a while! Shout out to my friend Lawyer Mike for answering my random pedantic questions about NY State property and notary laws among other things. Without further ado, I hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
The thought struck you after Joel had rushed out of Harrison’s: you’d agreed to meet him again tomorrow. Tomorrow was Saturday. He’d told you he had been grabbing coffee from there every morning before heading to the office, so did that mean he worked weekends? You figured you could ask him when you saw him, and you added it to the list of questions buzzing around your brain.
The only word you could use to describe how you felt as you flitted around downtown doing chores that afternoon was giddy. Everything in the world seemed brighter, easier, better. You replayed every detail of your conversation, almost in disbelief that it actually happened. If Joel hadn’t had to leave so suddenly, you’re sure you’d have gotten lost in his dark, soulful eyes for several more hours. Amazingly, the reality of him had been even better than what you imagined in your head. You grinned to yourself, remembering the way his touch had sent a jolt through you that you were still buzzing from.
By the time you got to your apartment late that afternoon, you’d decided you needed to reign in the excitement a little. Getting so caught up in a man you’d had one conversation with was insane. You hadn’t even managed to get his number- he’d left so quickly you didn’t get the chance.
Your phone had been buzzing on and off the whole way home and you’d assumed it was Summer, frantically reacting to the photo you’d sent her of Joel’s coffee cup. Your hands were so full of grocery bags you couldn’t check it. As soon as you got through the door, dropped your bags and checked your phone, your stomach dropped, the smile fading from your face in an instant. There were no messages from Summer. There were, however, three missed calls from your lawyer’s office.
Hands trembling, you called them back.
Tumblr media
“We have the final paperwork for the apartment sale ready to go,” your lawyer had told you, “It has to be signed by close of business on Monday,”
When you’d asked if you could sign it electronically, she’d said no. Something about state regulations. A wave of dread washed over you and did your best to keep your voice steady as you confirmed the appointment in their New York office for first thing on Monday morning. In person.
Once the call had ended, you tried to ignore the ringing in your ears against the emptiness of the apartment, the acidic feeling rising in your throat at the thought of what you’d just agreed to do. Your chest tightened, and for a moment, the room swam. Pressing your palms flat against the kitchen counter grounded you somewhat.
“Okay,” you said aloud, voice trembling, “It’s fine. I can handle this.”
You forced yourself to take a breath and straighten up. The knot in your stomach didn’t loosen entirely, but it was manageable for now. Hands still shaking, you opened your laptop and began searching for flights.
The only available flight was early Saturday morning. You closed your eyes briefly and took another deep breath. You didn’t want to have to think about any of this, let alone face it, but you had to. Just this final time and you’d be done with it all. You booked the flight, a hotel and a return for Monday afternoon in one fell swoop.
You didn’t move again until your phone buzzed on the counter next to you, making you jump. It was Summer, messaging to reschedule brunch. Just as well, you thought- now you didn’t need to cancel on her and have to explain why, or worse, lie about it.
Hey you, so sorry to do this, but I’ve gotta bail on brunch tomorrow. Forgot I was out of town! Can we reschedule for next weekend? I promise to make it up to you (mimosas on me!) Hope you have a good weekend, can’t wait to hear all about Mr. Miller!
You read her message twice; eyes refusing to focus on the words on the first pass. The relief at not having to be the one to cancel gave way to fresh anxiety.
Joel. You had no way to tell him you wouldn’t be able to meet tomorrow.
You pressed the heels of your hands in to your eyes so hard you saw stars, willing the tension away, but it only made the rapidly encroaching headache worse.
You couldn’t ask Summer to meet him and pass on a message, she was out of town, and you didn’t know anyone else in Austin, at least not well enough to ask them.
Could you go back to Harrison’s and leave a message behind the counter for him? You glanced at the clock on your stove and your stomach dropped- Harrison’s had closed for the day and didn’t open again until well after your flight left tomorrow.
Maybe an email? Absolutely not. The only way you could do that would be to take it from his business’ website, and he hadn’t actually told you the name of it, so you’d look like a top tier creeper.
You let out a shaky laugh at the absurdity of it all, dropped in to a chair by the window and closed your eyes, forcing yourself to inhale deeply, counting to four, and exhale slowly. Again. And again. Like you’d been taught. The ache in your head dulled a little, giving you room to think.
What was the worst that could happen? If he showed up and you weren’t there, maybe he’d wait for a while. Maybe he’d leave disappointed. Maybe you’d never see him again. Maybe he’d be there every morning whether you were or not.
The uncertainty was unbearable, but you realised there was nothing you could do about it. You had to sign the papers. You wanted to be rid of everything in New York once and for all. If Joel was there the next time you managed to get to Harrison’s, you’d apologise and hope that he understood.
You opened your eyes and stared out at the street below through tear-blurred vision. The realisation that things were out of your control didn’t make you feel better, exactly, but it was better than focusing on the endless cycle of what-ifs. A mirthless laugh bubbled up in your throat; of course this would all happen on the one day you had considered the possibility that you could finally move on with your life.
Tumblr media
By the time you boarded your flight on Saturday morning, you were exhausted. You’d spent half the night overthinking and the other half suspended in a state of dread. You tried not to think about Joel, but it was impossible as you watched the time you were supposed to meet him come and go. You cursed yourself for the thousandth time that morning for not getting his number. You could have at least let him know where you were, and he might have even texted you over the next couple of days and balanced out the unpleasantness.
Mid-morning New York City greeted you with its usual chaos, and you were in no mood to participate in it by the time you landed. You travelled to Midtown by train, checked in to your hotel, made it to the room and promptly shut the curtains. The city loomed outside and you didn’t feel remotely ready to face it.
You sank down on to the edge of the bed and it struck you suddenly that the wallpaper was almost the same colour as the bedroom walls of the apartment you shared with your ex. That deep green that you’d both agreed on after a debate over swatches one rainy afternoon. You’d painted that room together, dancing around to Queen’s Greatest Hits, laughing when you realised that both of your faces were covered in flecks of paint, like tiny green freckles.
You had laughed a lot back then. At in-jokes you shared, at stupid movies you watched ‘ironically’, at his bad jokes, at memes he’d send you on his lunch break, at the ridiculous dance moves he’d break out to cheer you up when you had a bad day. He’d promised you all of it forever when he proposed, late one night in the dead of winter, bundled up under blankets surrounded by that shade of green. You had believed him when he’d told you forever; how could you not when everything felt entirely effortless?
A smile passed over your lips, bittersweet and fleeting, before the memory burned away in your mind’s eye, replaced with a gut-wrenching ire, as all your memories of him were. After your engagement, the happiness had dissipated, slowly at first, then all at once.
In place of laughter, arguments that had started as small, silly disagreements grew in to silences that stretched for hours, then days. He no longer sent you messages on his lunch break, had no time to spend with you, let alone watch movies any more. You caught him smiling at his phone more than your attempts at resurrecting silly old in-jokes. When you stopped all correspondence with your wedding vendors, he didn’t even ask why.
When he started spending nights away from home, the excuses had been plausible enough at first; late nights at the office, work nights out, meeting up with friends from college you’d never heard him talk about before. Your questions had been met with cool indifference until one night when they’d been met with a wild, angry outburst. You’d stopped asking after that.
A feeling of uneasiness had started to follow you around in your every day;  suspicions that you knew you had to do something about, you just weren’t sure what. Complicated feelings, causing you to examine your definitions of love and hate, and trying to establish whether one always came with a healthy dose of the other, whether you were willing to compromise and hope for somewhere in the middle. All of your feelings had been horrifyingly validated when your entire world came crashing down around you overnight.
You remembered every detail about it with sickening clarity- waking up alone in bed to the sharp ring of your phone at an hour when no one should have been calling, the voice on the other end telling you there had been an accident. You’d barely processed the words before you were pulling on clothes and a coat, rushing to the hospital, heart beating wildly in your chest.
But you’d arrived too late. They’d told you he hadn’t made it in words too clinical and detached. They’d handed you a bag with his belongings, and you’d clutched it to your chest in an empty waiting room for an hour, staring blankly at the floor.
And then, there had been her.
She had been waiting for you in the corridor, bruised and shaken. You didn’t know her face then, but you’d learn it soon enough. She had been in the car with him and survived, miraculously, with only minor injuries. You’d had nothing more to offer her than a vacant stare as she explained everything- hysterical, face blotchy with tears. When you hadn’t said anything, she’d panicked and begged you to let her come to his funeral, said that she loved him too, that he would want her there. She’d known he was dead before you had.
You swallowed hard and rubbed at your temples, as you brought yourself back to the moment, forcing yourself to take a deep breath. You didn’t want any of this to pull you under, even if you were being forced to confront it again, so you decided to spend the rest of the day at the hotel bar, ignoring anyone who tried to speak to you, mulling over just how rough the next couple of days were going to be.
Tumblr media
You tried to keep your routine- you went to a coffee shop first thing on Sunday, sat next to the window and watched the world go by. But everything was wrong; the coffee, the view out of the window, the absence of a certain someone, even the noise around you. The overwhelming buzz of the city used to excite you, now it just left you with a sinking, empty feeling in the pit of your stomach; something that almost felt like fear.
As you watched people hurry past, every sip you took was more bitter than the last. You had a whole day to kill, and while you had considered spending it in your hotel room, you couldn’t bring yourself to stare at those green walls any longer.
Determined not to let anxiety dictate the day, you decided to visit some of the places you’d once loved, the spots in the city where you’d spent so much time it felt like you’d left pieces of yourself in them.
The MoMA was first on your list - a place you’d always considered a sanctuary. Wandering through the galleries that morning, you were relieved to find that it still had the same calming effect on your nerves. You took your time, moving from room to room in silence, letting the morning pass leisurely, surrounded by familiar, beautiful pieces of art.
From there, you walked to Bryant Park, where you used to sit with a book on sunny afternoons. The lawn was full of people enjoying the unseasonably warm weather and you were inclined to join them. By early afternoon, you were almost ready to admit that you were having a nice time. You crossed a few more spots off the list- you’d stuck to Midtown, consciously avoiding anywhere that might trigger any more memories, and so far, it had worked. You felt a tentative sense of accomplishment, and allowed yourself a moment to bask in it.
The moment didn’t last very long. You were crossing the street when you saw him- or you thought you did. The man walking toward you, tall and lean, had the same blonde hair, the same confident stride, the same style of suit that your ex had favoured. Your heart seized, and for a second, you couldn’t breathe. You gawped after the man as he passed you, but he didn’t even spare you a glance.
It wasn’t him. You knew it wasn’t. But the resemblance was enough to send a shockwave through your system. You turned abruptly, ducking into the nearest doorway, which happened to be a bookstore.
Inside, you beelined for the back of the shop, hoping to find a quiet spot to let your breathing even out. Your chest felt tight as you tried to count the books on the shelves in front of you, the titles on the spines blurring together. It took a while, but gradually the tightness began to ease. You found an empty chair tucked in to a corner, plopped down on to it and let the panic drain from your body.
Eyes wandering over the shelves, you finally took in your surroundings. You were in the travel section. And, directly opposite you, at eye level, was an entire shelf dedicated to Texas guidebooks.
A laugh rose in your throat before you could stop it. It wasn’t loud, more of a choked exhale than anything. Of all the aisles in this, apparently massive, bookstore, you’d managed to park yourself in this one. As you leaned forward and read some of the titles, a smile crept across your face.
It felt like a reassurance- like a small, strange nudge from something bigger than you; a reminder that better things were waiting for you when all of this was over. You plucked the one with the brightest colours from the shelf and made your way to the cash desk, earlier panic almost forgotten.
Tumblr media
The next morning, you checked out of the hotel without a backwards glance and hauled your case a few blocks to the lawyer’s office to arrive just as they opened.
It was a sterile and impersonal place, all polished wood, glass and muted tones. You sat across from your attorney, the pen in your hand feeling heavier by the minute.
“This is the last one,” she said, sliding the final document across to you. “Once you sign here, the sale is finalised, and I promise we won’t need anything more from you in person.”
You nodded, not trusting yourself to speak and your hand moved automatically, scrawling your signature on the dotted line. The act was over so fast it felt surreal.
“You’re all set,” the lawyer said, gathering all the documents together, “Congratulations on the sale!”
Congratulations. The word rang hollow in your ears. You murmured a polite thank you, stood, and shook her hand. The smile you offered was thin, stretched over the exhaustion that had suddenly hit you.
You felt drained when you left the office- in every way imaginable. The sale of your apartment should have felt freeing- like closure, but it didn’t. Perhaps that would come later, you mused, once you were further away from it.
You hailed a cab without hesitation, desperate to leave. As the driver navigated through familiar streets, you kept your gaze fixed on your lap. You were loathe to give this city any more of your attention.
Tumblr media
By the time you unlocked the door to your apartment in Austin, you were exhausted. The journey back had been blissfully uneventful, and every mile you travelled had chipped away at the tension in your shoulders, but the last few days had finally caught up with you.
You dropped your bag by the door and made your way to the kitchen to immediately pour a glass of the ‘celebration wine’ you’d left in there on Friday, primed and ready for your return. As you stood against the counter, eyes closed, taking another large gulp from your glass, it felt like you could finally relax.
The city outside your apartment hummed quietly, its sound different than the one you’d just come from. It was probably your imagination, but it felt softer - kinder, even. It was a sound you’d grown used to, had maybe even come to enjoy. This wasn’t home, not yet, but there was a comfort in being back in a space that was undeniably yours. Solace from being in a city that was free from the presence of ghosts.
Tumblr media
You arrived at Harrison’s the next morning five minutes after they opened, and tried not to feel self conscious at being the only customer in the whole place. It didn’t take long before other people trickled in though, causing the nervousness in the pit of your stomach to subside just a little.
You tried to tell yourself it didn’t matter- that if Joel wasn’t there or didn’t want to talk to you, it wasn’t the end of the world, but you’d ordered a black coffee for him just in case. You stared at the cup opposite you- it was probably cold by now.
When the door swung open and Joel walked in, your heart jumped. You’d almost forgotten how handsome he was. You called out to him before he could order and when his eyes landed on you his steps faltered. You waved him over with a bright smile, but the expression on his face gave you pause. His brow furrowed and an unreadable expression flickered across his face as he hesitated near the counter.
A pang of anxiety twisted in your chest. Maybe he didn’t want to talk to you after all. You tried to keep the smile on your face, but the thought that you might have truly messed up your chance with him made your throat tighten. Finally, he crossed the room and sat down across from you, but the expression didn’t fade. You gave him another, smaller, smile and gestured to the coffee in front of him.
“Hey. I, uh… I wasn’t sure if you’d be here but I thought I’d try and make up for the days I missed if you were,” you said, sheepishly, “I realised after you left that I didn’t ask for your number and I felt like such an idiot. I had to fly back to New York last minute for… a family thing and I-”
His face finally broke in to a smile and he let out a soft laugh, thankfully interrupting you mid- ramble.
“Hey, darlin,” he said, his hand that rested on the table made a gentle dismissive gesture. “Don’t worry about it. I’m just real glad to see you again.”
The fondness in his voice sent a wave of relief washing over you. You let out a breath and your bright smile returned. The last ounce of worry that had been gnawing at you seemed to evaporate.
“I’m glad to see you too,” you said, and hoped that he knew you really meant it. Joel glanced down at the coffee you’d bought for him and you reached out to stop him from drinking it with a nervous laugh.
“Stay put,” you said, the tension breaking as you stood, “I’ll order you a fresh one.”
Tumblr media
“So,” Joel said after a sip from his new cup of coffee, his gaze soft and intent on you. “What took you back to New York?”
You’d mentioned to him on Friday that you’d not long moved to Austin from NYC and given him some very vague reasoning before moving on swiftly to a different topic. But now, as he sat across from you, eyebrows raised in genuine curiosity, and given that it seemed to have disrupted his last couple of days as well as yours, you felt like you owed it to him to give him at least an honest answer.
“I’ll spare you the boring details,” you said, trying to be flippant. “I had to sign for the sale of an apartment. There was a.. tight deadline on it.”
Joel’s eyebrows raised further in surprise, but he didn’t say anything. You continued, “I didn’t want to go, but they said it couldn’t be done electronically and it was all a bit last minute, and extremely shitty. Well, most of it. I managed to visit a few of my old favourite spots.”
You shifted the focus and told Joel about the MoMA, about your favourite artworks there, about how much time you spent wandering around the place when you’d lived in New York. Joel listened intently, chiming in with questions from time to time, and you happily answered them, as long as there was no more talk of anything else you did in New York.
Eventually, he glanced at his watch and sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. “Hate to cut this short again sugar, but I gotta head to the office.”
“Of course,” you said, standing as he did. “I don’t want to be the reason you’re late again.”
Joel chuckled, grabbing his jacket and gathering up the coffee cups from the table. “This time, I’m not in a rush.”
You told him you should go too, that you had some client deadlines looming and had to catch up on some work. It turned out as you stepped outside that you were both heading in the same direction; him to his office and you back to your apartment. You fell in to step as you walked side by side, and the conversation picked up from where it had left off easily. At one point, Joel glanced at you, his tone light and hopeful.
“I figure we oughta exchange numbers. That is, if you’d like to?”
You beamed up at him, pulling out your phone. “I’d love to.”
The two of you swapped phones and typed in your numbers. When he handed yours back, his fingers brushed against your palm and lingered too long to be accidental.
As you approached a corner, Joel slowed. “This is me,” he said, jabbing a thumb in the direction of his office.
You smiled, pointing in the opposite direction. “And this is me.”
“Unless you plan on jettin’ off to another city…” Joel’s lips curved in to a teasing smile. “Same time tomorrow?”
Without thinking, you reached out, lightly touching his arm as you laughed. “Same time, same place,” you promised, your smile lingering. “I really mean it this time.”
Joel’s eyes softened, his gaze dropping briefly to where your hand rested on his arm before flitting back to yours. He stepped just a little closer and the air between you seemed to still. His fingers brushed against your elbow, the lightest of touches, but it sent a shiver racing up your spine. Neither of you moved for a beat too long, his eyes flicking down to your lips, just for a second.
“Have a good day, darlin’,” he said sincerely, taking a step back and dropping his hand. You already missed his touch.
“You too,” you said with a smile, voice steady despite the way your heart was hammering against your ribcage.
He gave you one last grin before he turned away with a nod. You stood there for a moment watching him disappear down the block, before finally heading toward your apartment. If you’d had the energy, you would have skipped all the way.

back with my crackship bullshit so soon holy crap! Anyways heres a ToriSaiKai ramble cuz my brains so dead
THIS MOSTLY GOES INTO TORIKAI AND THEIR FUNNY LITTLE DYNAMIC BE WARNED THIS IS LONG AND MIGHT BE OUT OF CHARACTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To me, ToriSaiKai doesn’t work that well as a full on relationship, it’d be so fucked 😭 its more of a “imagine them crushing on each other/imagine how messy it’d be if they dated for a couple months” so kinda like more like a crazy fling than anything
Toritsuka would probably find himself crushing on Saiki first cuz he can legit transform into a girl and all that, but thats been done 100 times so you get the jist :3 Tori’s brain works in a sort of “if I’m getting something from you, I’ll stay around” way so he’s being clingy to Saiki and doing extra favors for him and all that stuff because he just wants Saiki to date him at least once as Kusuko, which is far from a promise, so why is he clinging around Saiki and doing extra things for him if it doesn’t get him Kusuko in return? (he’s gay for Saiki and doesn’t realize yet) So he continues flattering Saiki and all that woth the excuse of Saiki’s shapeshifting. Why not just any other girl? Because Kusuko is canonically really really attractive and I don’t think the perv would let go of that for weeks to even months. But where does Kaido come in? Well, Kaido’s always kinda hanging around Nendo, Saiki and Kuboyasu with a huge emphasis on Saiki and Kuboyasu since he looks up to them so much, and heck you could even say “fuck it” and add Kubo into the poly crackship lol anyway, so in one way or another Kaido realizes he has more than just friendly feelings for Saiki but is in super denial! He starts feeling jealous over Tori doing all these favors and even flirting with Saiki, so Kaido’s like being protective and stuff in his own little ways going “Saiki, Toritsukas apart of the dark reunion! We need to release our powers on him!” very loudly and Saiki rolls his eyes, silently agreeing with Kaido and playing into it a little in his mind cuz yeah, maybe he should ‘release his powers’ on that perv. So Tori’s very aware of Kaido’s jokes but I do think that theres a misunderstanding and Tori thinks Kaido ACTUALLY has superhuman powers like Saiki, cuz Saiki has showed that he enjoys Kaido and see’s him as at least a friend more than a few times which is so rare for Saiki when they don’t know he’s a psychic. Tori is sort of confused and shocked when he makes that connection cuz Kaido’s so weak and small, but it kind of makes sense since his spirit guardian was a out of the ordinary chihuahua! Tori starts making thinly veiled threats back about his spirit medium power, saying stuff like how he’s gonna get a world star wrestler to possess him so they can fight it out like real men! Kaido really seriously thinks Tori’s part of Dark Reunion and Tori thinks Kaido knows about how Saiki’s a psychic and therefore knows about shapeshifting, wanting Kusuko all to himself like he does. I think it’d be really really funny if Tori knew about Kaido being gay first on accident 😭😭😭😭😭 a cocky Toritsuka going “I have no need to worry, I have waay more experience than you anyways” and a flushing Kaido going “Huh?! Who said I ever wanted him like that?!”
a bit of confusion all around! Its sort of hard for Saiki to decipher cuz all the misunderstandings but he eventually does, and he actually gets amusement out of it, not stopping it because that at first.
The 2 of them go head to head, Kaido not wanting his trusted ally and greatest friend to join Dark Reunion and Tori wanting a chance with Kusuko instead. They flatter him and pamper him and such and he actually doesn’t mind being bought extra sweets and such, he just has to put up with Tori’s overly flirtatious and suggestive comments from time to time and Kaido’s try’s at expressing his love for Saiki and how much he means to him, just so he doesn’t join Dark Reunion. Saiki can see that this is sort of ruining them at first because they both hate each other so much but then they start popping up in each others heads again and again I think it starts off as a sort of “maybe I should trick Kaido with this to make him look bad in front of Saiki!” and a “Whats Toritsuka doing over by Saiki?! He’s probably got something evil up his sleeve that’ll make Saiki succumb to the Dark Reunion! What if he puts something in his food! Poison? Something worse?!” But they get less situational and more sudden, Tori see’s something light blue and thinks “I hate that dumb chihuahua!” Kaido see’s something to do with ghosts and goes “that stupid Dark Reunion ghost perv!” They don’t even need to see each other much and they’re popping up in each other’s thoughts 10 times a day! That got a little worrying to Saiki, especially when they start having frustrated rambly thoughts about each other that felt like they never stopped.
“he pisses me off so bad! Flaunting his power around everywhere but not using it in front of anyone, such a cheap ploy just for chicks probably! Not to mention his cute act, how he probably uses makeup just to appear cuter and less threatening! That dark reunion crap is so annoying, every word out of that guys mouth carefully articulated to sound insane! He probably thinks he’s so good, that damn goody twoshoes! He drives me insane!”
“does he really think he’s so slick?! What did he even join Dark Reunion for?! To be a pervert to all the reunions women?! I should of known they’d have those kind of disgusting people, is he even a person?! His devilishly good looks, those can’t possibly be real or human! He’s some kind of undead or something! How dare he come back from his grave to haunt the JetBlackWings?! What a sick pervert!”
The thoughts lead up more and more, so does the flattery and the head to head battles. Tori pushes Kaido and Kaido punches Tori, Tori rolls his eyes and Kaido goes into a fit of yelling. Their thoughts about each other slip out but the only thing they can understand are the accidental compliments, catching them both very off gaurd.
They sort of want to understand each other and why they’re doing this after a while, Tori asking stuff like “whats your deal?! We can just take turns!” and Kaido yelling “Why did you even join Dark Reunion, to haunt him!?”
They don’t really get anywhere except they know more and more that this is all for Saiki but they want it to stop, but they really don’t want it to stop at the same time. Their little fights and nonsensical arguments replay over and over in their heads, keeping them up at night, trying understand what the other was saying, trying to understand what’s happening to their brains and why its always either each other or Saiki.
what I like about it is the huge fucking mess they have to get out of, cuz lets be real, Kaido and Tori are like COMPLETE opposites

Everyone, I have been stressing myself out a ridiculous amount this past hour and now I'm at the point where I just need to laugh
What am I stressed over? My world states in Dragon Age. Which is a completely normal thing to stress about
This will probably get long, so let's put it behind a cut. And promise me. If you read to the end, that you'll laugh at me in the comments, because I will deserve it
So, I'm outlining a post-game Emmrich/Sonnet fic. And I was daydreaming and I thought, how cool would it be for Bethroot and Thom's daughter to choose necromancy as her mage specialty! Because that's what she knows! Aunt Rook, Uncle Emmrich, Uncle Dorian, all necromancers!
And then I thought, oh no. Bethroot is part of Edda's world state so that won't work. What Inquisitor does Sonnet have? She has Frae, my Solas romancer who goes to the Fade with him. Damn, I told myself. I guess I can't have this really cool thing
Then I think... well, could you switch them? And here's where I'm so dumb, you guys. I told myself NO. NOT ALLOWED
And why isn't it allowed? Because Bethroot's world state is called 'ash in the sun' from the tavern song 'oh grey warden' therefore the Rook in Bethroot's world state has to be a warden or romancing Davrin
End of discussion
For almost ten minutes, I sat here and said, but it would be so cool to have the thing and every time my brain responded 'don't care. you set the rules ten years ago and actions have consequences. you cannot have the cool thing'
But you will all be proud of me. I finally told my brain to shove it and that I'm gonna have the cool thing. Which means I'm switching some world states around and I'm pretty sure I will literally be the only one who cares about this. Because at the end of the day, I'm pretty sure anyone actually reading this post wants me to have fun writing. And if switching my world states around leads to more fun hence more writing, I think you'll be cool with it
Like, I'll admit that I'm a little bummed on Edda's behalf. She's getting the short end of the stick, because I'm gonna put Frae (along with Aubrey Hawke) with a Harding romancer for reasons. Which means I'm not even sure who Edda is gonna end up with
And I sort of feel bad that I'm so much more invested in other Rooks than her. I assumed she'd be my main. The one who I wrote the most about. I thought I'd be all dwarf all the time, but Sonnet and lich Emmrich are eating my brain. (I also think I resent Edda a bit because I wanted her to be older and serious and Rook is... not that)
So yeah. Sonnet is going to team up with Bethroot, Wynneth, and Anelle and my brain is just going to have to be okay with that
