alhaitham attempted to overdose after the argument with kaveh over their thesis.

they basically screamed each others throats off that day; they've argued over their differing ideals before but it was never this bad, and the fight eventually got a bit physical, and there was a lot of hairpulling, scratching, pulling each other up by the collar, because they weren't just arguing about the thesis anymore, they were mad at each other. until alhaitham pointed out kaveh's fatal flaw, how his altruism is going to fail him one day, and kaveh, who can't handle the truth, yanks at alhaithams hair again, telling him to fuck off, that he wishes he never met him, all through pained, angry tears. and then, he lets go and leaves, bolting out the front door and not even bothering to close it.

it was one of the first times in alhaitham's life that he had ever let his emotions get the better of him, and he watched kaveh run out of the door, panting and shaking, tears prickling the corners of his eyes out of pure, unadulterated frustration. and alhaitham realizes at this moment that he'd lost someone. again.

oh yes, alhaitham's all alone again!! no one cares about him anymore!! he'd just lost the last person in the world who gave a damn!! silly alhaitham!! all because you're you. because you had to open your mouth again. because you had to say something. all you wanted was to help, but nobody understands that. nobody ever will. to them, you're just a cold, calculated, arrogant, cocky, bastard. and look what you've done now.

the thought breaks him, and he crumbles to the ground in what can only be described as a meltdown, a very violent one. vases are shattered, kitchen wear chucked across the room, books thrown around carelessly, all while he screams curses into the air, directed at no one, maybe at Kusanali, maybe at Celestia, who knows, but he screams anyway, bordering on babbles as he stumbles to his room, dizzy and distressed and grabs the bottle of prescription drugs (working on what kind of drug currently). It's not full, it's almost empty actually, only about 10 tablets at the bottom, but alhaitham, hands shaking, laughs incredulously at himself, and eats all of them.

or at least: tries to...

the commotion he'd made upset his neighbours. initially, they were storming over to his house with the Matra beside them to have him taken care of but upon arrival, they were horrified. The matra with them practically tackled alhaitham, making him spit out the 3 pills he had in his mouth when they found him in his room; he had already taken 5. they dragged him to the bimarstan as fast as he could, the neighbours following in terror and worry.

alhaitham was saved that day and the memory still haunts him. he was so clouded with emotion he'd lost all sense of what he was doing and just felt, and it scared him how his own feelings took control of him. At that point, alhaitham only closed up even further, basically forcing on his poker face and shoving down his feelings because he never wanted to feel so vulnerable again. he doesn't want to feel. it hurts to feel. strong feelings only bring pain. more pain than alhaitham could bear.

so alhaitham chose to hide this story, he never told anyone about it, not even a single detail. but kaveh, who moved back in eventually and now lived with alhaitham for about a year since their argument, was tidying up when he found a bottle of pills under alhaitham's bed, it was practically empty, only 2 pills remained.

concerned, he questions alhaitham about it later and it was the first time he'd seen alhaitham genuinely look scared. when kaveh explained he'd found it under his bed, alhaitham snatched away the bottle and disposed of it in the trash, cursing himself for not having found it last year when the incident happened and couldn't believe it had been there the whole time.

kaveh isn't an idiot, he pieced it together the moment he saw alhaitham's reaction. he just stands there, completely speechless and horrified. all he can say is "when..?"

and alhaitham, for the first time since their school years, responds in a shaky, miserable voice, "a year ago."

and kaveh is stunned, just staring at alhaitham, who seemed so unreachable when he moved in, suddenly looking so heartbreakingly vulnerable.

he doesn't say anything.

kaveh just hugs him, buries alhaitham's face into his shoulder and hugs him. and he swears he can hear soft, weak sounds coming from the scribe, and he swears the fabric over his shoulders became damp, but he doesn't say anything.

he just holds him.

i'm sorry. come at my throat all you'd like.

not to be annoying but i do think a lot of people mischaracterize falin. shes got the most drastic canon v fanon thing going on. which i guess makes sense bc 1. we dont see much of her and 2. lot of the fan stuff are anime-onlies that have seen even less

but i think like a good 90% of the time i see falin-centric art or posts im like hrm hrm hrm thats all wrong no nope no-siree

she's just a cool chick that takes life as it comes, doesn't hold grudges even against a mother that apparently was trying to beat the magic outta her, finds her older brother the coolest person in the world, and has autism about observing life (and death, she loves the ghosts she has a connection to) and nature and taking care of things (including taking care of her brother, which is why she's even in the dungeons; she saw her scrawny mess of a brother and decided she had to fix that).

and i think my favorite part that people don't talk about is... she would have done the same for marcille or laios if it were one of them that was eaten. you could see it in her eyes:

it's what shuro misunderstands about her. it's easy to see her feminine, cute, good girl pieces and forget the rest of her. but she loves things to an ends-of-the-earth extent; the kind of caring that makes you a little insane. and that's how I think she and laios end up on the same page with their weirdness. they have different interests, but they are the same level of committed to those interests.

it's easy to love her, because she probably loves you just as much, if not more.

uhh yeah you know what i'll talk a lil about it . why not . i can share some analysis as a treat . will tuck my thoughts gently behind a readmore, so sweet and softlys

i think fiddleford is a fine character its just irritating when narratively he's treated as this very tragic figure when he's an adult man capable of making his own choices . this is a flaw with the books, to be clear - i do not think the actions of fiddleford align with the explicit narrative he has as a nice guy who had a terrible thing happen to him, which stanford must feel soul-crushing guilt over .

this is what bothers me about him: that he is intended to be read as just an all around good dude with tragic circumstances, rather than a messy guy who made shit-ass terrible decisions every step of the way

not even talking about fandom mischaracterization. that's a given in any collaborative fan space and i don't really hold it against people for doing that . fandom is fun, play with your dolls, do whatever - all that mostly means is im not gonna vibe w/ a lot of fanart, it's not going to impact my opinion of the character . i do think it's funny how the collective fanonization of him is simultaneously the wettest meow-meow, but also a total badass when . he's so fundamentally conflict adverse he destroys his own life and body over it .

the thing that is compelling about fidds to me is he is a bit of a worm, and that worminess winds up destroying him from the inside out . he really embodies the entire concept of 'inaction is action', in a way that's deeply frustrating in both fun and not so fun ways

and the fact he leaves them for a year is just like . that's also fucked man . i can personally attest to how fucked it is to have your dad just piss off for a year to do contractor work . what a wild subplot to be treated with such little narrative importance to his character . like . the fact that it holds so little importance to fidds is a narrative all on its own

it's just weird how the story treats him, man . he's not that endearing of a dude, which is what i like about him . i like that he makes bad decisions . i like that he doesn't respect when people say "no" . characters should make bad decisions and be bad people . i just really hate this presentation of his own actions being the fault of anyone other than fiddleford

oh also the research paper stint was insane . wild to me that that was presented in the story as like a cool or kind thing to do to someone . like that's a very reasonable boundary for stanford to be upset about being crossed, and its wild how that's presented as him being a jackass . there are MANY things that make ford a piece of shit . being upset about a guy doing something like that behind your back is not one of them

tho that's a whole other conversation about how ford as a character is defined by never having his boundaries respected, and this never being challenged, and in fact he should just be okay with it when it happens by the "right" sorts of people . once an object, always an object . love him

-he thinks youre simply strange, and to be fair, most merfolk are on land

-the way you suspiciously eye sushi or honestly any kind of regular lander food makes him question whether or not hes being poisoned

-he once saw you slipping out of the dorms to take a well needed break in some water, and watched you down a potion and slip right on into what you really look like

-yeah he gasped super loud and blew his cover immediately

-a nice little stare off ensued, in absolute silence

-after a second of silence he very loudly goes “oh my cod-GOD, i thought you were just like weird.”

-now this can go one of two ways

-if you laugh and let him have the biggest sigh of relief that you arent mad, he basically runs up to you. Hands on his knees looking at you like a dad inspecting car damage

-he's immediately inquiring about what its like, can he touch you, how are you breathing, do you like the tweels (theres a correct answer)

-he's absolutely geeked if you let him touch your tail, but freaks out and pulls away when he feels your slime coat

-and people say chivalry is dead

-if you continue to stare at him, he starts begging for forgiveness

-deuce is physically immune to having a bad opinion

-because of how based he is, he loves your merperson-ness (??)

-he gets the hots for you the first time he sees you interact with other merfolk

-you seemed so natural with them, and far more relaxed. a huge smile on at all time while you made the cutest trilling noises, like you were deep under the blue

-yeah, hes making you the best possible bouquet of roses personally painted red and the coral you told him about from your home grove. what a sweetie

-you bet your top dollar that when jack gets a crush on you, hes suddenly very interested in swimming

-he would ask you to join him for early morning swim sessions, encouraging you to join him for “one on one training”

-yeah yeah, he just wants to be with you

-hes got a mean face, but a heart of gold, everyone knows this

-after the dogman sees your absolutely intense swimming capacity, he begs you to join other sports

-if you accept, you have your own personal body guard 24/7

-if you dont, well damn, guess hes stickin to the water

-when you're on land, meandering about the savannaclaw dorms, let it be known jacks the first to ask you (dumbly) if its safe for you to be in the sun

-himbo jack who cheered

-after a laugh and reassurance you’re definitely okay, he lowkey still doesn't believe you

-congrats, he now constantly gives you water bottles and whatever food you like

-kelp? seaweed? sea grapes? dulse? hes got you covered

-if you're not very fond of landers, jacks got two big listening ears for your disposal

-though he may find complaints of ‘strange’ traditions a bit….conflicting

-lol epel is actually terrified

-the guy didnt even know you, and just so happened to make the mistake of walking too close to the shore of the island when he saw the biggest fishy eyes sticking out of the top of the water

-hes running for his life after that

-should he encounter you after the fact while on land, you snicker, asking him about strange beings in the ocean

-yeah he picked up on what you were putting down, he steered clear of you for a good while

-sucks that youre in his flight class, and alchemy class

-you keep teasing him about it until hes close to throwing fists about it (comment on his height and youre a goner)

-ensue vil threatening to kick him from the dorm so on and so forth till he begrudgingly agrees to ignore you

-but word gets around that he got in some shit for it, now you feel bad you jerk (ur not a jerk, reader, im just ur god rn)

-so you apologized to him in traditional merfolk fashion, with the best food you can make and plenty of pearls and shells in a nice little basket

-hes inclined to give you a chance when he sees the pearls, hes a big fan of them despite his insecurities

-it takes a long time for him to become your friend, let alone more, but with enough jewelry and even helping him with class (cheating), he starts to like you!

Sebek Zigvolt

-oh hes delighted to be with someone he views on the exact same level as him

-sebek being half human and half fae feels to be in a bit of an awkward spot between his fantastical heritage and his more mundae blood

-you’re just like him!!

-albeit a bit more aquatic

-outside of your aquatic self, sebek doesn't like water much. lilia enjoys taunting him for this fact, teasing the poor boy to hell and back while he stares at you with googoo eyes from the shore

-however, sebek adores watching you swim about, when not servicing maellus, he actively asks you to swim for him

-you're just so mesmerizing!

-he on a very rare occasion would join you, but not any sort of often. when he does though, he likes to test his endurance for swimming

-give him a run for his money, he’ll never admit it, but he loves the challenge, especially from someone deemed worthy

-when on land, you can find yourself being gifted stones

-pretty uncanny, huh?

-sebeks got a high loving for any non humans, and if you’re in the octavinelle dormitory, youve got a brand new regular in the lounge

-dont you dare tell anyone the mushy way he hands you each stone, looking aside, arm fully infront of him while he drops it into your palm with a little “this reminds me of you” (little is relative, this boy SHOUTS)

-stones turn to shells though,and if you gift him the large stones and shells you find under the water? hes got a curio cabinet full of each one on careful display
