I hate how if you do art ppl will tell you to do something more valuable with your time. Dont get me wrong, they'll tell you your art looks so nice and stuff but then turn around right after like they didnt just say that and spout 'advice' at you. I hate how you have to prove the value in something to make it seem worthwhile. Like no Nisha, i dont do art because im good at it, i do it stay sane. I do it because it makes me happy. I do it because i stopped for a year and it was the most miserable year of my life. I dont care that it doesn't 'have value'. Shut up.

*Transfiguration, Charms, Defense*

Ominis looks like he's paying attention but he's actually wondering what he'll have for lunch or dinner, depending on the hour.

He can do the spell on his third try anyway.

Sebastian is paying attention, whispering the incantation under his breath whenever the Professor says it and moving his wrist to warm up and practice the movements. When he feels ready, he stops paying attention and observes his classmates, or, more often than not, exchanges notes with MC.

He has it on the first try.

Depending on what she did a night before, she either takes a nap or doodles on her book. She doesn't care much about theory but she can't wait to do the practical.

She gets it on her first try either way and proceeds to play with Sebastian.

*Potions, Herbology, Beast Class*

Ominis hates them both because his wand's help has limits. Also, he usually needs both hands to handle the plants or potions or beasts but he needs at least one to "see" with his wand. So, he does the minimun then sits back and listens to the chaos around him and tries to guess what the others are doing.

Sebastian loves theory the same as he loves practical work, but when it comes to these kind of classes he cares little about being the best and more about having good enough grades to become the best.

MC prefers these classes to the theoretical ones, so instead of napping or playing around, she actually does her work, even if she rather just buy or steal stuff like potions and plants. Her favorite is Beast Class because she gets to play with the animals and that counts as working.

*History, Divination, Runes, Aritmancy*

Ominis sleeps. He does enjoy Runes, and he likes to feel them over and interpret their meanings. He hates that most of the examples they review are flat copies in their textbooks, but MC and Sebastian got into carving them for him with their wands or sharpish objects.

Sebastian takes advantage of easy classes like History and Divination to begin and finish his homework from other classes, that way he has more time to research other things in his free time.

MC sleeps. She hates these classes. Fig got her in Divination as a joke and she doesn't care much about understanding Runes and Arithmancy except when she needs to use them. She doesn't know how they work, but they work, and that's all that matters. So, she has more energybfor other classes or for more adventures.

In regards to the SU x TF2 AU:

I have been racking my brain over here trying to understand the decision to make RED Spy a ruby and BLU Spy a sapphire. Nothing about his portrayal seemed to line up with canon depictions of rubies or sapphires, and RED Spy's gem isn't even faceted like a ruby. Also the obvious joke of making him a Bixbite, like the corrupted gem who was a giant crab, seemed obvious. Then it dawned on me.

He's a color-change sapphire, isn't he? That's why his RED version has a sapphire cut despite supposedly being a ruby? And also potentially why he's the only one we've seen RED and BLU variations of (though I get the impression that's also so one can be paired with Scout's Ma and the other with Engie) when all the others have been RED(-ish) isn't it? Or am I completely off base with this theory?

but since ive had lots of questions about details id like to mention that:

1. i originally had not planned to make any story behind the su au, so if there’s things that dont make sense, don’t align with canon and stuff, it was not planned soo im working with what i have :p

2. i was hoping no one notices the mistake i made of swapping the gems ruby/sapphire lol its because at first i had drawn Blu(sapphire) Spy in that page, but i thought it was confusing since there was RedSpy x Scout’sMa and Scout next to him, so i just changed the colors and i didnt change the gem bc i was lazy :P

3. the main reason i put both Blu/Red Spy was to create fusion, i thought to add an extra merc with a blu color would be cool for the fusions that isnt from ClassicTeam, and idk i couldn’t think of a better merc to have as a pair than Spy and i thought there is more potential with 2 Spies to work on a story than any other merc idk

(yes i didnt put garnet as the fusion so as not to make confusion with Demoman being a Garnet, and we don’t have an Amethyst anyways so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

4. it is IMPOSSIBLE to align each TF2 character with a SU character, there’s nothing in common between the two medias whatsoever, so the dynamics that im gonna be making for the TF2 au are gonna be a bit mixed, for example: RedSpy and BluSpy having Ruby/Sapphire’s dynamic (kinda), but also they have the same dynamic as Rose/Pearl, for the part where Red would go with a human (Scout’s Ma) and Blu would be jealous (just like pearl), HeavyMedic also would be having Ruby/Sapphire dynamic (the part where they fuse for the first time just like Ruby/Sapphire in the show, im still working on comic about this btw)

5. also im mixing with well TF2 canon story + trying really to make an original story too, soo its a whole mess ik :p im trying just bear with me ^^"

but thank you for pointing that out, it makes me happy knowing people actually pay attention to details thats super fun! ill make sure to not miss any details next time! :D

like listen listen, I’m aware that like, him being a nerdy otaku is his one thing he feel 100% confident in being, and honestly same dude I relate to that, HOWEVER. every time I remember that boy telling mc that they wouldn’t understand TSL a part of me wants to spite watch and read the entire series a million times over JUST to catch a detail not even he would know to rub it in his scaley FACE.(I’m sure that says a lot about me as a person lol)

But like, I also feel like it would be kinda fun? greetings zaccrimart! I was wondering: how long does it take you to finish a piece? and, about your coloring process: do you color in grayscale first, then color, or do you just color? I notice that your values go hand in hand, and dont clash, even when you go into so much detail!

Woof! So I hope this is helpful. I'm still learning my own process as well so sorry if there's something here that seems kind of wishy-washy....So firstly! It can take a really long time for me to finish a painting because well I'm mentally unwell LOL but if I only count the hours I spend working on it instead of anguishing - it can take well over 10 hours!

So I am going to start with the fact that I actually love colouring and rendering more than I love drawing...There are two parts to my choosing of colours. One that happens on a micro and macro scale. For the sake of this post I'm going to talk about the Macro decisions I make for a full painting and then in a reply I will detail the smaller decisions I make!

A big part of how I choose colours is how I compose a piece and what I want to direct the viewer towards. There's some colour theory you should know, just some basic concepts like complementary colours and other colour arrangements but that's mostly taste and necessity bc I think value is more important.

Lets say this is our drawing!

Now the focus is the halo (very easy composition) With things like detailing I tend to just scribble it to imply the area it occupies. Composition is a whole other beast I could talk forever about but we're not here for that so I'll only say briefly that I try to balance out areas of high detail and low detail. Things like faces I try to keep clear, and high dense detailing I try to make pretty compacted together so that they read more as 'a colour' or even just 'texture'

After my first pass of colours (above pic.2) I throw it in greyscale to see what's up! I notice that there are some values I dont like! : ( So above that I colour in the greyscale as close to what I want! Just to vibe it out.

I don't just add the greyscale to my existing colours (bc Idk how to do that and have it look nice lol) I just manually adjust the colours. I go back to my coloured version and try to get it as close as I can to my adjusted greyscale.

After the values have been fixed I throw it in photoshop and I fuck around with the colours until I like them, adjusting things both with layer adjustments and gradient maps, and then manually to bring back certan colours I want!

Generally speaking I always do small thumbnails for the colour. Since I dont want to commit to doing it on such a big file! After that it really is just refining and adjusting! I would say look up art that has a similar vibe to what you want and really study it with your eyes....

I'll be going into my rendering and colour choices I make while rendering in a followup to this post!

okay so my ENA theory is kinda out there and i dont feel like citing a ton of evidenceso just like. trust me on this and let me have it in writing so i can potentially say i told you so.

ENAs werent soldiers. they were servants.

i believe the world they exist in, ostensibly some form of afterlife, was once a bustling and charmed utopia. we see so many empty, vague cathedrals, ruins, deserts and wastes with evidence of what once could have been life, or is some new form of life. there are very few genuinely inhabited spaces, and theyre closely guarded and exclusive, or succumbing to their own hedonism and devolving slowly into madness.

ENAs notably appear to have a more primary side on the left which is always very polite and agreeable. they also tend to be happy to go on random quests, ultimately never serving their own personal interests or getting to know themselves unless under great duress (the power of potluck).

i believe ENAs originally were only one color each, serving as NPC butlers of sorts. theyre regarded as lesser beings due to being literally soulless- that is, beings constructed entirely within this afterlife-esque realm, with no real soul attached. as such, they cannot be forgiven of sin, nor be considered truly "alive" in any capacity. mannequins serve as recepticals for ENAs to be projected into in order to complete a given task- simply empty husks to be filled with code.

i believe some sort of great cataclysm occurred, or perhaps this realm has existed in such perpetuity that it has simply degraded over the eons. it is still relatively unknown that ENAs now have something of free will. perhaps their original "maker" or "master" no longer exists, and so they persist only as a remnant of an age long past, even forgotten by most. and so they are regarded as a mere nuisance, leftovers without purpose or free will, milling about and bothering anyone nearby to serve a goal that no longer exists.

over time, perhaps in gaining more experiences and achieving a base level of sapience, ENAs gained their unstable, emotional halves. an attempt at understanding what being alive is, what having a soul is.

with this in mind, it makes sense that ENAs are generally naiive, polarized, and unstable. think of meseeks from rick and morty. they werent meant to be alive this long!

and if ENAs are servants... they could be made to do anything.

Hii, I saw your latest post and your art style is so pretty?? What?? I have a question though. How do you do the paint one? Or rendering in general. Like genuinely, I have a problem with rendering and I can't seem to quite understand it on my own. Do you just start with flat colors? Do you do lineart or colors right after the sketch? Is the "lineart" just added later? Painted over? Erased to give thinner and thicker lines?? I'm really curious!!

hi! im not the best painter tbh! though i do have a background in painting but ill try my best to explain

diff artists have different approaches to how they paint but generally yes, you would start out with big shapes first and then go into the details - work big picture first. like, if you squint and the drawing makes sense in terms of value and colour and shape, youre on the right path.

i can kinda show this with a warmup in-class speedpaint exercise we did a couple weeks ago where we were tasked with painting an eye in about 30 minutes (i was late and only had 20 lol)

luckily ive got the layers for this. i start of with a base layer, kind of like a underpaint layer since that's how i personally learned to paint traditionally. i did have a sketch before laying down this base layer under it but i ended up using it for final rendering details lol

after that i started laying down the big blocks of colour. i wasn't necessarily aiming for complete colour accuracy here, i just wanted to match the value. i chose a pink underlayer to influence my colour choices because the underlayer will peak through the blocks of colour i paint over it

and then (forgive me if this seems like "draw the rest of the owl" in terms of progression) but this is where i started going in with finer detail. i did the rest of the render on the sketch layer i had so you can see some of the lines from the sketch here

even for the flat colour version of my character, i had an underpaint layer! i used yellow and orange since i wanted her colours to be warm and used a semi-opaque brush to put her colours in rather than using a completely opaque brush

when i wanted to do the painted version, i put the lineart on multiply and reduced the opacity and brushed in some some quick shadows on seperate layer on hard light mode to give me a good base to start painting with

and then i did all the rendering and details on a new layer ontop of everything. i keep the lineart light so i can paint over it easily and also colour pick from it when i want a more distinct line to seperate certain shapes. i unfortunately dont know how to explain this part because a lot of this is intuitive to me and i'm still learning. but you gotta make use of different types of "edges" in painting, and you would generally have more contrast in the focal point of your painting than in other places to draw the eye to that point. i suggest researching the use of edges in painting if you really wanna learn more - because im a terrible teacher haha

for fun here's what the rendering layer for this one looks like on its own and the finished thing for comparison

there's other things you need to learn too, like bounce light, atmospheric perspective, ambient occlusion... and colour theory is always important! i could go on for a long time. there's a lot of pieces to the puzzle and it may seem overwhelming but there's tons of resources online and it will all become second nature to you as you keep practicing
