#no hate to Annabeth at all I don’t mean it to come off that way

I fell down my daily solangelo rabbit hole and thought of smth. We all know how Will became head counselor really young after the battle of manhattan, but we seem to be forgetting that Annabeth was also head counselor supper young because she had been there the longest. STAY WOTH ME THIS ISNT GOING WHRE YOU THINK I PROMISE. I feel like after the battle of manhattan Will asked Annabeth for advice because she’s a smartass, a badass, and the aforementioned being a young head counselor. I feel like She didn’t really know what to tell him because it was second nature to her but she told him to be strong for his siblings and be “the adult” because idk I feel like someone told Will that and it manifested somehow and that’s why we got that one scene in the hidden oracle. All in all to say that I think he asked her for help and she didn’t help him much because of the differences in rise to the top and all she really told him was to be strong which he did but it resulted in extreme survivors guilt and never really talking about his feelings and issues. Like he’s just one big bottle of pain and trauma that nobody talks about
Idk that might just be me tho

protective clarisse save me ANWAYSSSS enjoy
*mentions of clarisse picking reader up and carrying her around
PLEASE ignore the fact i forgot ambrosia existed thanks 🙏🙏 yk i just be saying stuff
it starts out like any capture the flag game
except for the fact you’re on different teams
like in so it goes when clar tells y/n “don’t do anything i wouldn’t do”
everyone once in a while the teams switch up
and clarisse has a really hard time when you’re not on the same team, but she can usually function
she’s worried out of her mind obvi
we all know you’re her achilles heel
but for some reason this time clarisse just has a really bad feeling
she’ll probably threaten everyone on her team- if they so much as LOOK at you in the wrong way she’s going to make their lives a literal hell
and everyone is like ok scary lady 🫡
they all know clarisse don’t play about you
so the game is going pretty normal
you’re just doing your thing and clarisse is hunting around you
it’s really funny because you and a few of your siblings are just fighting whoever makes their way to you
and you win every time
bc clarisse is still letting you win 😭😭😭😭
the good members of her team get told to turn around
and then she lets the weaker ones, the stragglers she doesn’t care about, pass through and then smiles when you cheer after winning even tho she can’t see you
you feel her eyes on you tho sometimes it’s kinda creepy
but basically annabeth and the blue team had set up these trenches in random parts of the wood
they were lined with like a bunch of leaves and spare linens so they were soft at the bottom
but someone 🙄🙄🙄 ugh
forgot to soften up one of them and that’s the one you fall into
she hears you scream and she’s like WOAH HOLY FUCK
running through the woods you’re crying at the bottom of this 6 ft deep hole your siblings are screaming
like she literally throws herself to the ground and drags you out of the pit pure adrenaline
and like she could tell just by your screams and the look on your face that you were HURT HURT
but she knows you need her rn so she pulls you into her lap and asks what hurts
and you can’t even speak you’re in so much pain but you gesture to your leg and maybe clarisse just didn’t want to notice it before but like that bitch is BROKEN
she’s literally shaking
“it’s okay it’s okay baby it’s okay someone is gonna go get a healer right? SOMEONE IS GOING TO GO GET A HEALER, RIGHT?”
*cue like 10 random campers all running off*
and you’re screaming and crying and your siblings are freaking out so the game kinda stops bc everyone is like what happened 😭
then they just walk into this clearing and see you pale and crying and leg obviously broken, sitting in a shaking clarisse’s lap
one of her siblings definitely has to come over and subtly say that she’s like doing a good job LMAO
bc she is STRUGGLING
like she’s never been so scared in her life
her heart is pounding her hands are shaking
but for the first time in her life she’s not really angry right now
she’s just fucking terrified
and she HATES it
she’s stroking your hair and has her arm wrapped around your waist so tight
she tells you “just dig your nails into my arm”
and you can’t even comprehend what’s going on so she grabs your hands and let’s you squeeze so hard she swears her fingers come out a little crooked
FINALLY some apollo kids come over with a stretcher
so then she starts yelling at them “BE GENTLER SHES HURT DUMBFUCKS”
then finally after clarisse’s incessant screaming she holds your hand as they take you back to the healers
then 20 minutes later they reset your leg and put it in a little cast and give you some AMAZING painkillers
so you’re like omg
clarisse is like pale and sweaty and her heartbeat is so erratic one of the healers actually has to come over and be like “maybe you should sit down and get checked out..?”
she starts screaming at them
then you’re like “omg no my saviors are fighting ☹️☹️☹️☹️”
“no no i’m sorry i didn’t mean to make you sad it’s fine it’s fine we’re not fighting”
“yay!!!!!!!”
she has to lay down in your bed and take some really deep breaths in order to calm down
and you’re just happy bc you are floating and you have your gf with you
you’re babbling on about something and clarisse is like wtf is happening to me
but also she’s acting like you just died
holding your head to her chest and staring off into the distance like that one painting of ivan the terrible holding his dead son y’all know
and you’re just happy
she’s kissing all over your face and head and telling you about how she’s gonna help you
“i’ll carry you whenever you don’t feel like using your crutches, i’ll make sure you take all your medicine, i’ll find and kill whoever did this to you, i’ll sleep with you every night just in case, and i won’t let you out of my sight ever again, and i’ll make chiron switch the teams back”
she ends up doing all of those things obvi
she annoys chiron so much he makes a permanent rule that the ares and your cabin always have to be on the same team
clarisse becomes 10x worse in terms of protectiveness
like she’s watching you like a HAWK
she just felt so totally helpless in that moment so unprepared and she never wants to feel like that again
she doesn’t think her heart can take it actually 😭
she does find the person and loses dessert privileges for 5 months for what she did!!!!!
she sleeps with you ever night bc the meds make you sleep restlessly and she’s always there to whisper in your ear and lull you back to sleep
even if you’re like oh i can just use my crutches she’s always staring at the ground like it’s a monster that’s gonna hurt you so she’s like
“hm well i don’t think so actually haha just let me carry you”
“I WANT TO WALK CLARISSE”
*picking you up* “no it’s fine this is safest”
“LET ME DOWN”
basically you’re just the love of her life and she can’t imagine something else happening to you

character list: hades daughter! reader, clarisse, grover, percy, annabeth, male oc (briefly)
warnings: swearing, fighting, mentioned parent loss, clarisse is a bitch
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You dragged your feet along the dirt pathway that led back towards the open grass training grounds of the camp. The other campers were enjoying their night after a long game of capture the flag you missed by a day. You were slightly appreciative that you got to camp when you did because fighting off a fury and minotaur in one day was enough. The entire idea of this place was just peculiar to you but you’d seen much stranger on the New York subways back home. One minute you were walking home from school half an hour after it began because some girl in your class lied and said you punched her. The next minute some winged lady with a bad pixie cut was trying to kill you. Not even three hours later, a minotaur nearly succeeded in the fury’s failed task.
Upon your arrival people were interested to know who the new girl was that escaped the minotaur's clutches. Rumors began to circulate that you were a daughter of Poseidon because of the minotaur fight. According to one of the girls in your cabin, a demigod named Percy killed a minotaur on his first night at camp and got claimed as Poseidon's first son shortly after. Since you’d also “defeated” a minotaur in everyone else’s eyes that meant to them that maybe you too were a child of Poseidon. Everyone seemed to like that narrative except one cluster of Ares children that had been eyeing you all day in way that felt a lot less than admiration. It didn’t help that the rumors followed your every step and grabbed more attention the longer you stayed in the open.
You had only made it a few steps outside of Hermes cabin and the amount of stares you were getting made your skin crawl. Just as you were about to give up on trying to make it to dinner, a familiar face appeared in front of you. The satyr greeted you, “Hey you’re outside again. I was coming to invite you to dinner. Oh and I made you something in arts & crafts.” He pulled a small crown of yellow and white dandelions from behind his back and placed it on your head gently. You couldn’t help but smile at the gesture, “Thank you, Grover. It’s beautiful.” The satyr stuck out his wrist proudly and said, “It matches mine too. Usually Annabeth and Percy are here to match with us too but they’re not coming back until late tonight so you’ll have to wait to meet them.” You weren’t sure if you were looking forward to meeting this Percy guy based on the fact that an entire cabin hated his guts and now you for even being associated with him.
As you followed Grover down the cabin step you eyed the other teenagers around you before meeting his gaze nervously and he glanced down at your right hand. Grover stared for a minute then said, “I don’t think the axe is helping.” He chuckled and reached for the axe but you pulled away before he could touch you or the weapon. There was an awkward silence before he told you warmly, “You have nothing to worry about y/n. you are safe now okay? It’s just dinner time and it’s taco tuesday. So I’ll take this and you get some food, and we can sit outside on the beach away from everyone else. Deal?” You nodded and swatted his hand away when he reached for your axe again, this time he asked, “Then how about you put it back?” You followed his instructions and closed the cabin door behind you before he led you off to the dining hall.
You picked at the last taco on your plate as Grover sat beside you and asked, “So do you think you know…” There was no point in letting him finish so you spoke up, “No. Daddy never told me or gave me hints about who he really was..."
Now that was a complete lie.
Truthfully, you did have an idea of who your father could be but there was no tangible evidence. The only lead you really had was poorly remembered dreams from your childhood. The dreams depicted you sitting on a throne of bones guarded by three vicious dogs with countless dead soldiers at your feet. Glittering obsidian and midnight blue marbling lined the throne room and the smell of bakhoor, incense, and spices clung to the back of your throat from your father's timeless cologne. As a child you recall him calling you "my little goddess" and teaching you that darkness and the dead were nothing to fear. As you grew older you realized that you truly were the only thing that mattered to him which is why you stayed out of sight for so long. He gave you the hints long ago but you never wanted to believe they were true. Especially after you arrived at camp to see that there wasn't even a cabin for your suspected father.
Grover continued staring at you prompting you to continue speaking, "Some could say Ares because I was always hot-tempered and starting trouble as a kid but…could have just been the absent father- dead mother thing? The Ares kids here aren’t my type of people.”
Grover nodded along and asked curiously, “Where’s the axe from?” You shrugged and answered, “I found it in my house as a kid. My grandpa was a huge nerd about that kind of stuff and used to collect and sell things like swords and knives and my grandma said it was probably just another collectible he didn’t sell before he died. As a kid I always thought daddy left it behind for me, kinda like a gift.”
The sound of a twig snapping drew both of your attention to a boy who was cautiously making his way to you both. Grover beamed and waved him over, “Ezra, hey!” The satyr turned to you and continued, “Y/n this is Ezra, son of Demeter.” You gave a genuine smile and the boy who looked around your age relaxed more and responded, “Nice to meet you.” The young demigod was fairly tall around 5’11 and his thick black locs with their puffy roots added an extra inch or two. Assorted colors of beads adorned each loc on his head right at the ends or the middle. He smelled of earl grey and cucumber in a subtle way that complemented the shades of green in his outfit and headscarf. Ezra stuck his thumb back towards the rest of camp, “Percy and Annabeth are back, and they’re looking for you.” Grover lit up and said, “Thanks man, I’ll be right over.” The demigod waved to you before disappearing down the path back towards camp. The satyr beside you excitedly stood up, “Percy and Annabeth are the ones I told you about. I know they’ll wanna meet you let’s go- wait. On second thought I’ll bring them to you, just stay here and I’ll be right back.” Before you could even say that you didn’t want to meet anymore new faces, Grover was already running back towards camp leaving you alone looking over the beach once again.
The peace and quiet lasted no more than three seconds because through the lapping of gentle waves a chorus of amused whispers and snickers behind you. The same group of Ares kids that had been eying you like a meal since the moment you arrived crowded around you. The ringleader of the pack you’d recognized as Clarisse, pushed you with the blunt end of her spear. The thick, chocolate brown ringlets that framed her face swung back and forth with her laughter as she looked at you laying on the ground with food spilled on your t-shirt. She laughed along with her cabin siblings and murmured, “Pathetic.” The end of her spear pressed further against your sternum making it slightly harder to breathe in. A smile tugged at the corner of her lips when you remained silent, “What? Cat got your tongue? ‘Cause you sure had a lot to say a minute ago.”
Clarisse kicked the retracted bo staff that you owned, in its current form it was no longer than a roll of quarters. Your fingers reached for it, opening and closing them desperately but stopped immediately when her foot pressed them into the dirt. one of her brothers mocked you in a whiny tone, “You think Daddy weft you a widdle gift?” He high fived Clarisse and laughed before she crouched down and grabbed you by the collar so your faces were merely inches apart. Clarisse hissed with words laced of venom and hatred, “Nobodies like you don’t get gifts from the gods. We all know you’re not one of the big three so why lie to everyone about it?  You think you’re all special because you lied about fighting a minotaur and killing a fury? Lying about being Poseidon's kid?” You rapidly shook your head, “I never lied because I never said any of that.” She let out a laugh and continued, “Gods this is too good, too easy…let’s get one thing straight right now though. You’ll always just be a lonely little nobody. And I know for a fact your Daddy will never claim you as his own because you’re weak. That’s why you hide behind that little satyr all day, your little protector. But where is he now? Huh? Nobody’s here to protect you now.” She plucked the flower crown from your head and threw it aside allowing one of her siblings to stomp it into the dirt.
Anger coursed through your veins and your eyes filled with a fiery rage you hadn’t felt since your family fell apart when you were eight. You gritted your teeth together and tightened your jaw then without thinking, you leaned forward and spat directly into her face. The crowd of siblings had grown to a larger group of nosey teenagers that oo’ed as as Clarisse let go of your t-shirt and let your head fall back onto the ground with a thud. The young demigod flipped her prized spear in her hand and pointed it directly beneath your chin by your throat. The very tip of it electrified and glowed a fiery red only a millimeter from touching your skin which made you swallow thickly. For only a second pure fear flashed across your face which was enough for Clarisse to know she was winning already. A sinister smile crept onto her face and you pressed your head back further into the earth, begging to the skies above for someone, anyone to help.
Your eyes fluttered closed and you heard a deep voice in the distance, “Hit the ground.” The voice was familiar of someone you knew but couldn’t quite remember. Nevertheless, you followed the command and balled your free hand into a fist before bringing down against the hard dirt and gravel covered earth. The force of your fist fractured the ground beneath Clarisse and her siblings' feet causing them to stumble back. The retracted bo staff rolled back into your grasp which you held in one hand. with the other, you reached for her spear and snatched it from her grip whilst spinning it back so the pointed end now faced her and her siblings who were lying on the ground. You took a step back and twirled the spear in your hands for show then threw it to the side which she immediately scrambled to pick up.
Of the six Ares blood teenagers, three of them were on the ground unconscious while the other two staggered to their feet ready to fight back. You quickly extended your bo staff and whipped it across your body knocking one of the boys back before swinging it quickly in an X formation knocking out the girl beside him. Bringing the staff once more across your torso then over your shoulder and around your head, you knocked the boy out as well leaving Clarisse the only one standing.
Clarisse stood more angry than before now knowing that you were stronger than you looked, proving that she now had competition. Her cheeks felt hot as other campers watched the two of you standing before one another clearly questioning if she was going to be the one that walked away tonight. One of the smaller kids you recognized from Hermes cabin threw you the shield he owned. You nodded to him as a thank you and took a step back. Clarisse watched as you brushed one of your thick twists out of your face and raised an eyebrow which pissed her off more. Why weren’t you struggling? Why weren’t you afraid?  The idea of you winning pissed her off the more she stood there which was enough for her to lunge forward with her spear. You held up the shield and caught the body of the spear in your hand and turned around to try and slip it from her grasp. The girl pushed you trying to shake it from your grip and when you held on tighter she huffed and threw you forward not realizing her most prized possession would be thrown with you. Crackling and hissing sounds filled your ears the moment your back hit the ground and knocked the wind from your chest. Clarisse looked at the half of her spear left in her hand while the pointed end was still lodged into the shield in your palm. Blood curdling screams echoed throughout the entire camp and everything seemed to still around you as the teenage girl stared in horror. You walked over to her and pushed her back with your shield before she could run up on you. She hit the ground once more and you snatched the other part of her spear from between the arm hold. All of your thoughts were clouded with anger as her words rushed back through your memory once more.
You climbed on top of her with each of your legs on a side of her waist so you were hovering above her torso with a smile far from friendly. You held one of her arms down with your knee while the other was trapped beneath her torso but she didn’t even try to fight you back anymore. She watched with her eyes now full of fear as you held the sharp end of her broken spear beside her face, dragging the tip of the blade on her skin but not hard enough to cause harm. You placed the tip underneath her chin so she was forced to meet your gaze, but a sudden cloud of darkness fell over you both. The curtain of shadows engulfed the two of you which took your focus from Clarisse long enough for her to free her arm and push you off of her. The shadows rose as you made your way onto your feet and stepped away from the crowd that had formed. The feeling of your heart pounding in your chest seemed to be the only thing you could focus on as the dark clouds fell from your head to surrounding your feet. When you could finally see ahead of you all that was there was the ocean, same as before.
“Y/N!” Grover’s voice broke through the crowd as he manuvered through campers and stared at you with darkness and shadows pooling at your feet. A girl with deep umber skin and black waist length box braids stood beside him and a pale, freckle- faced boy with a mess of blonde curls that brought out his ocean blue eyes. The three of them along with every other camper and Chiron who followed the crowd stared up above your head. You looked up to see a long royal blue and obsidian bident, a black snake coiling up the body with two navy prongs pointed towards the sky at the top. A glow of midnight blue surrounded the bident and illuminated around you. It lowered into your hand and the weight brought a smile to your face as you felt a wave of pride in knowing what this meant.
Chiron’s voice bellowed, “You have been claimed by Hades. King of the Dead. God of the Underworld. Y/N L/N.”
You turned to face Grover and his two friends with a sweet smile on your face as if you didn't just kick a whole cabin of demigods asses. "Hey I'm Y/N, daughter of Hades. Nice to meet you both." The blonde boy you knew to be Percy just stood with his mouth agape until the girl elbowed him. He scratched the back of his head and said, "Hi, I'm Percy." You smiled and shook his hand while the girl gave you a head nod, "Annabeth." Grover looked past you and motioned to the Ares kids on the ground, "You did all that?" Looking over your shoulder you saw some of them were now coming back to and you turned back unfazed, "More or less." Annabeth slung her arm over your shoulder and led you along with her two other friends away from everyone else, "Yeah I like you. We're gonna get along well I think."

“Everybody deserves flowers.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay so my last post did pretty good I think! So I’m gonna be posting this early because I’ll be busy this weekend but I still wanna post something!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Percy Jackson x !!afab!! reader
Cussing, slight angst, heart break, unrequited love at first. Fluff at the end!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a typical morning at camp. The sun was brightly shining. Beating down on everybody, making it a more warm than typical. Percy walked past you. Like he normally does looking for annabeth, you guess.
“Oh shit sorry Y/N.” Percy said nervously as he had bumped into you, not taking in his surroundings. “ i didn’t see you there, almost like you were invisible.” He joked
“Oh.” You laughed it off even though those words had hurt worse than any other. “Guess I’m a ghost!”
“Hey have you seen annabeth?” He look around anxiously. Holding something in his hand. It looked like a letter, maybe.
“No I haven’t sorry, is everything okay?” You prodded at the situation, now getting nosy.
“Yeah I just, you know what I gotta tell someone, come here.” He grabbed your hand, and led you into the woods.
Oh. My. God. He’s holding my hand! I can’t believe it. The boy I’ve liked ever since he first showed up at camp. The way he talks and walk and just everything about him is just perfect! I follow him into the woods, feeling like I’m floating.
You two reach a rock, and he pulls you to sit next to him.
“I like annabeth. Actually I might love her.”
Oh… that’s not what you wanted to hear. You take your hands away from his. Your heart dropped. It feels like the entire word is ending. How could you have been so stupid. Of course he likes annabeth, everybody does. Tears well in your eyes but you do your best to hide them.
“That’s great Percy! I’m sure she feels the same way!” You try your best to support him, because no matter what, you will always care for him.
“Maybe, try giving her a gift, I mean everybody deserves flowers?”
“Yeah, that’s a good idea! I need to give her this letter. I just can’t find her.” He gets up. “Y’know, you’re a really good friend.” Percy gleams at you and walks off.
You let go. Of all the hurt, all the pain, why does it hurt so bad.
After about an hour you finally get up and make your way back to camp
You see Percy and giving the letter to annabeth. She shakes her head no at him and walks away. Percy looks like a kicked puppy
The words he told you over play in your head. Over and over again.
So……
You walk past him and into your cabin. Because the world didn’t end when the boy you liked for months ended up liking some one else.
Day go by and you get better. You find out that annabeth rejected Percy. Which sucks but it’ll all be okay. Percy has tried talking to you numerous times, but you don’t let up easy.
Today you were sitting in a flower field. Just reading a book. Until your peaceful quietness was interrupted. By a certain someone
“Hey.” Percy staggered out. He sat beside you underneath a big oak tree.
“Hey..” you try your best to avoid eye contact.
“Why have you been avoiding me like I’m the plague?” He jokes
“Percy. I have to tell you something. I don’t wanna keep hiding it from you, because you’re an important person to me.” This sudden urge to let go of all your feelings struck you
“Tell me. You can tell me anything.” He gets closer
“Okay, well. Percy I’ve liked you ever since you first showed up at camp with your stupid smile, and stupid clothes.” You start to get a little emotional “I hate you. I hate you so much.” You stand up and start pacing
“What’s going on, why do you hate me? You just said you liked me?” Percy is obviously confused.
“That’s the thing! I hate you because I still like you. It’s like you do no wrong to me. You could stab me a million times and I’d still love you.” Percy stands up and spins your around to face him
“I wish you would’ve told me sooner. Part of me has always liked you too. When you started ignoring me, well.. it was the worst time of my life.” He pauses for a minute “I never realized but I’ve always looked for you, everywhere I go. And when you get sent on quest I make sure I’m there with you. I get protective I guess. I just thought it was because you were a good friend to me.”
“But..?” You say wanting to know more
“You’re so much more than that. You always check up on me. You always make sure I’m laughing when I’m with you. Annabeth didn’t do that. I mean sure she’s a good friend but…I can only see my self with you now.”
“Are you saying…that you like me too.”
“Duh you idiot.” He looks like he gets an idea which is normally not a good thing. He wonders off for second, somewhere you can’t quite see him.
“What the heck?” You mumble. He comes rushing back with….
“Here. It’s like you said everybody deserves flowers.” He hands them off to you “but you especially deserve them.”
“Oh Percy Jackson, I never knew you could be such a sap.”
“Oh don’t let it get to your head.”
This time you and Percy walk back into camp. But with your hands intertwined and huge smiles covering the both of your faces.
You were Percy’s and he was yours.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay so a little surprise because I won’t be able to post this weekend 🫶🏻 this is pretty bad but I tried to make it cute 😭 I’ll try to write for other fandoms soon I’m just obsessed with Percy right now and it all people want!!
New au idea: annabeth gets fatally injured in New Jersey and the closest safety is the Wayne manor. She’s with Thalia for the quest and the extent of Thalias knowledge of Annabeth’s dad’s side is what she accidentally let slip (much of which wouldn’t make sense without the context Thalia also has of being neglected by a parent) and what she babbles out through nightmares when they were on the street. Could either go the route of her still begging for Bruce even after anything, or being scarily quiet and only mumbling apologies. No matter what she knows, Thalia has her own idea constructed of him based off of Beryl and absolutely despises him. Annabeth has given Thalia his address at some point in time in case of something like this happens, but neither of them thought it was an actual possibility of them going back.
Either the Waynes have to desperately try to hide the bat thing while also giving Annabeth medical care, or have to immediately reveal themselves to Thalia. There’s lots of tension as Bruce is trying to reconcile as best he can while having flashbacks to the last woman who kept him from his son with an incredibly similar name, Thalia doesn’t believe in forgiving parents because of her own undealt with trauma and is also getting flashbacks to the last time she left a kid with a clearly incompetent parent for even a moment. Annabeth can be anywhere from wanting to leave as soon possible and only keeping Thalia from going homicidal because of her siblings, to wanting to also make amends.
Both of them are intensely protective of Damian because they see themselves in him, and a surprise adoption plot may or may not be on the rise. Tim is either mostly ignored or seen as evidence bruce is still a piece of garbage. Thalia and Jason either bond over the whole being dead thing, or she calls him out for taking it on a 13 year old kid (the same age Annabeth was when they finally reunited). Depending on Dick’s role in Annabeth’s running away, Thalia is either sympathetic because of being an older sibling, or thinks he’s just as guilty as the weird butler they have.
Obviously, Jason inspires some angst about identity and the fact he has the same as her brother. Bonus points if this is pre-hoo so Thalia is dealing with her own emotional train wreck without talking to anyone. Basically, everyone is trying to accomplish different things and coping badly with their own trauma. Bonus bonus points if Beryl and Bruce had dated when Thalia was super young or Jason was an infant, so she holds that against him for not saving her/them and he also feels super guilty that two kids he failed had to keep each other alive.
Annabeth calling Bruce while bleeding out in Thalia’s arm: come pick me up? I’m sorry to bother.
Bruce and Dick: WHAT THE FUCK??
Thalia: I see they don’t want you back.
Alfred picks them up and Thalia hates him immediately because I think they should be rivals, punk v british old man. Also, Alfred did not like grunge and really liked Britpop and Thalia fucking hates it.
Thalia already knows about them being vigilantes she just thinks they all suck at it and need to do systemic change with the amount of wealth they have. Yes, Thalia has read theory. I’d think this best takes place between SOM and TTC so we’re in like October-November, wait no October, I want a Halloween showdown.
I don’t think I like the Talia-Thalia thing because I’ll be honest, I don’t say them the same way, so instead, more about being kept from his child who he thought dead.
Thalia: You never learn do you?
Bruce: She wasn’t yours to keep.
Thalia: Technically I’m her aunt and pseudo-sister so fuck off bitchass.
Annabeth is mostly bedridden and ideally this means that Damian is also injured and thus they are bed rest buddies. Thalia is basically guarding their door and Damian feels oddly safe with her snapping off sparks and lightning every time Jason or Tim approach the door.
Dick is allowed in, in this AU I think that he knew Annabeth was abstractly alive since he thinks he would’ve felt it although he’s kept it to himself. Annabeth is touched. Also, I can’t be mad at Dick for too long given he was in SPACE for the whole thing.
Jason approaching the door to yell at Annabeth: You better let me in.
Thalia, summoning lightning: you better kill the joker first.
*zaps Jason when he pulls out the ‘I died’ card and kicks him several times before asking Annabeth if she wants to see him.*
He’s not allowed to complain when he’s got what she wanted for her own brother Jason.
IN LOVE with the concept that Bruce and Beryl dated which is now making my head spin with TRISTAN and Bruce dating for PR. Annabeth and Piper would die inside.
Basically, the moral of the story is that Thalia is the superior sibling/pseudo-parent and that everyone else are just clowns, also they steal Damian but give him back because Jon Kent started crying.
Makes TTC so much worse don’t you think?
Thank you for the ask!!!! Sorry for the lateness!
I saw someone on TikTok say that Percabeth is one sided and all I could say is that it looks like someone didn’t read Mark of Athena. Then I did some research and I found out they’re a Pereyna shipper(I had no idea that existed).
Personally, I don't get it, Reyna literally just tried to make a move on Percy but he rejected her and neither of them thought about it again so I don’t really see it. Either way, that's not the issue because I don't really care what people ship as long as it's not weird or creepy (I'm looking at any Artemis x Percy, Luke x Percy, Annabeth x Luke, or Percy x Nico shippers).
But back to the Percabeth is one sided thing, I’m a little bit confused. Because, did they miss the Annabeth pining silently but obviously for Percy for YEARS, Annabeth being jealous of Rachel partly because she liked Percy, Annabeth telling Athena that Percy is everything to her, Annabeth driving herself crazy those months Percy was gone and searching for him without giving up. So “Percabeth is one sided” where???
Then upon further research I found that of course, turns out they are an Annabeth hater(they don’t admit it but it’s obvious for apparent reasons). Some of their reasons: Annabeth's nickname for Percy, “seaweed brain” is degrading and implies he is stupid, Annabeth is mean to Rachel, and Annabeth is scared of Percy which made him feel like he deserves to die.
1. Annabeths nickname for Percy started out as teasing but became endearing for the both of them, just like the nickname “wise girl”. Percy even gets mad at Thalia for using this nickname because he considers it something solely Annabeth can use. In no way has Percy ever said or even mentioned that he feels put down because of the nickname. Also, Percy never hesitates to call anyone, even gods, out on their shit, so if it was really bothering him, he would most likely say something.
2. Honestly, the whole deal with Rachel was never that deep. Like, it did have a deeper meaning for Annabeth than many could comprehend but the whole catty part was never that big. A few snide remarks, sure, but it's not like she was bullying Rachel. If anyone thinks otherwise, that's okay, but in my opinion it was meant to be funny and it came off as such, and even Rachel and Annabeth themselves moved on and became fiends. Moving forward, considering the context of Annabeth's jealousy, it makes total sense for her to feel resentment towards Rachel. I'm not saying it's justified, but if a boy she'd been crushing on for years and is destined to die soon spends his last summer with another girl who is closer to normal than Annabeth could ever be, in what world would she not be mad? In fact, some of it was just teenage pettiness. And that's fine, she wasn't hurting anyone. Being a teenager with a crush is hard, and it's harder when you're a demigod with a huge prophecy hanging over you and your best friends heads. So is her anger justified? Maybe. But is she valid? Absolutely.
3. This is the most ridiculous reason yet. First of all, has Percy ever told Annabeth he feels like he deserves to die? I don't think so. Especially not before he almost let himself die with Jason there. I don't know if that person was just expecting Annabeth to guess, or what. Secondly, they were in Tartarus, and Percy did something scary. So of course, Annabeth is going to be scared. If Percy feels like Annabeth being scared makes him want to die, that's not really Annabeth's fault. And to expect Annabeth to make him feel better about something she is still recovering from herself doesn't make much sense, does it. At this point it just felt like they were going to hate Annabeth regardless, and these weren't actual issues they had with her they just saw a reason to hate her and went for it.
Hey, ship whatever you want and hate whoever you want, but don't come with false interpretations(that I know was easy to comprehend) as evidence for why you are right, please.
I’m gonna say something probably controversial that I feel like people are ignoring regarding making criticisms of the PJO show: just because Rick was involved in the creation and writing of the show doesn’t mean it is beyond criticism or even (super controversial) that it’s good.
RR is a novelist who relies heavily on first person narrative and internal monologue to tell his stories. That is hard AF to translate and adapt to screen. He’s also written so many other books and thought so much about changes he would make that it just feels like he’s rewriting the series instead of adapting it.
And yes, I’m sure Disney has some restrictions (Gabe) and there are changes that work well (Medusa). But come on, just because the actors are good doesn’t mean the story is good.
The little quips feel out of place, they are figuring things out too fast (worked for Medusa, didn’t work for Lotus Casino), and there is too much exposition and not enough exploring and fully fleshing out the fights (Alecto/Ms Dodds) plus moments that just did not need to be changed (Waterland). And because of all that the pacing is weird (the literal pace of the plot too like passing the solstice). He also changed which characters experience certain moments that seem vital (Percy figuring out Sally is in the Underworld, Percy & The Fates). And trying to pretend like this isn’t true because of small moments that are wonderful is dumb. I should feel like I HAVE to watch the next episode the way I kept turning the page and staying up to read the next chapter and I definitely don’t feel that.
The fans (and Rick) hated the movies not just because of the character assassinations but because of how far it deviated from the plot. Just because this series checked off the marks that the movie missed (Mr D. and Clarisse, St Louis, Ares and the Waterpark) doesn’t mean the plot is actually being followed. There’s a difference between changes needed for a screen adaptation and plot changes. If we had been expecting a fully changed adaptation that would be different. But we were promised a faithful adaptation and that’s not this.
I’m still gonna watch it because I want to see where it goes and I want to support the cast but I’m disappointed. And I’m tired of pretending that I’m not for fear of being called a fake fan or racist, because Leah as Annabeth and the casting as a whole is one of the only things I do love.
what I think about ep 6 of the pjo series’s
Ok firstly
“how do you know how to pick pocket?”
“I’m multitalented”
AND GIRL trust me I know you are but idk don’t you think that maybeeee someone who is like related to the god of thieves taught her how to pick pocket, LIKE MAYBE HER BROTHER? All I’m just saying is not ready for this betrayal
secondly i really like that levitating is the new casino song, it’s no poker face and I’m almost glad it rick didn’t use that song but like if it wasn’t going to be poker face I’m glad it’s levitating
and I agree with some people that the vibes of the casino were off, it felt more like a actual casino and less of a arcade kinda? And that there’s was just to much plot/lore in this episode.
“We know who the traitor is”
“oh know, how?”
LUKE STOP IT. STOP IT LUKE RIGHT NOW. YOU BASTARD OH MY GOSH I HATE YOU STOWWWP
that being said.
“when did you guys turn into a old married couple?”
LIKE YESSSS LUKE YOU KNOWWWW PERCABETH IS COMING TOGETHER
ALSO the way Percy askes things and annabeth is just like
“dude….”
LIKE NO STOP BECAUSE IM PERCY IN THAT SITUATION BC I DONT KNOW CRAP AND I NEED MY ANNABETH TO TELL ME THINGS
my point is when she does that it’s hitting way to close to home
just a little scared on how the next few episodes are gonna go because of the ending…
LIKE WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE SUMMER SOLSTICE PASSED!?!??
ok episode 6 thoughts
decent episode, doesn't top episodes 4 or 5 for me but it was good
kronos being portrayed by his headmaster is an interesting choice
the iris message is so much blurrier than I always imagined i'm crying
144p iris message you would think it would be clearer but nope that's so funny to me
with how involved rick is with the show that means that's always what he imagined iris messaging looking like I can't iris messaging is ruined for me
we didn’t get percy talking to the zebra T-T it’s fine tho i forgot that even happened in the book until i checked after watching
their whole conversation while watching the animals escape i love them
their chemistry is perfect in this episode
THE LOTUS CASINO HAS A ROLLER COASTER WHAT
i get people wanted poker face, but the dua lipa song is perfect, it’s like a slightly more modern version
i don’t know fashion throughout the centuries so i can’t really say anything about the costume designs, but i kinda wish there were more obviously out of place outfits in the lotus
is augustus mentioned at all in the books? i don’t remember a satyr named augustus so i guess he was made just for the tv series?
luring grover in with pan is a cool change
grover slowly losing his memory was played pretty well
i keep getting impressed by how good these kids are as actors
i honestly don’t know why people hate on lin manuel miranda so much, i think he made for a pretty good hermes this episode
but also the way they’re portraying hermes feels a little bit off?? i don’t really know how but something didn’t feel right about his character
i do feel like he’s the most “human” out of the gods introduced so far, and i think that came through pretty well
“to be so close to someone you love, knowing neither of you has any choice but to keep hurting each other?” that line is just-
as someone with a really complicated relationship with my dad that line just hurt goddamn
the flashback percy had??? i feel like that line doesn’t 100% relate to percy and sally’s relationship, but i see how that’d be how percy would feel
unless i’m dumb and that was referencing his relationship with poseidon lol
ok the end of their talk with hermes i wanna talk about that a bit
parenting sometimes being watching your kid struggle and being powerless to stop it: completely true
“we’re all just doing the best we can” now that’s some godly bullshit
the difference between that first quote and gods being parents is that they’re literally capable of doing anything
they could be more present in their kids lives, they just CHOOSE not to, that’s how it works in the books
sure it’s coming from a place where he thinks interacting will only make things worse but???
i can’t articulate my thoughts, i liked this scene tho, my thoughts on hermes are mixed as they should be
ANNABETH STEALING HERMES’S KEYS
“i’m multi-talented” I LOVE HER
percy forgetting grover felt so unsettling to me
hermes driving a taxi so real
percy trying to drive, i’m not gonna lie, that scene went on a little too long for me, but i was laughing the whole time so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
ok percy getting 4 pearls instead of 3??? idk why but that change pissed me off
i paused to get out the book, and i guess it makes more sense then hades just deciding to return her
but at the same time there’s the line in the prophecy, he’s supposed to leave her in the underworld for that part of the prophecy
are they just going to end up accidentally breaking one of the pearls or trading it or something? that’s the only way i can see that still working out
i feel like these episode reviews always turn out sounding more negative than positive, but i swear i’m enjoying the hell out of this series, i just have trouble articulating joy lol
out of curiosity, what do you think the duffers could have done to help mitigate the homophobic fandom? do you just mean making byler canon earlier, or dropping heavier-handed hints/clues/foreshadowing that are harder to dismiss in the show? or are you thinking something they themselves could’ve done in real life, like actively going out of their way to support pride month or something like that?
i’m also thinking abt how the show presents itself, on several occasions, to be very anti-bullying and how it prides itself on celebrating those who might be considered losers, weirdos, and outcasts. but because this idea is never really explicitly stated or emphasized in the show, casual viewers tend to gloss over it, or miss it entirely. is this the duffer bro’s fault? is this an indication that they could have done more? done better? and do they have a moral responsibility to educate those who are intent on missing the point?
maybe! i don’t rly know how i feel. i love the show, i love byler, and i do agree that there are certain moves the duffers have made that i’m not 100% happy with. also the idea of a gay plot twist is kind of…. you know, fun, but not the best. however, i also try to keep in mind that these are two (presumably) cis straight men and so, i cut them some slack and i immensely appreciate what they’re trying to do (assuming ofc they are moving in a canon byler direction).
for them to establish two canon queer relationships in a mainstream show that i love that isn’t centered around queerness??? i could cry tears of joy just thinking abt it, and so i feel i’m more compelled to dismiss some of the mistakes the duffers make along the way.
anyway, sorry that the ask is ridiculously long (feel free to ignore it, or only address a small part of it if it’s too overwhelming!). i hope it makes sense, though it might just come off as incoherent rambling - whoops. i’m honestly just speaking recreationally lol, but i’d love to hear some more thoughts frm you on the subject if you’re willing!
Agh, thank you for the ask, I love hearing your thoughts!!!
[Re: this post]
To touch on the first/main question - what could the Duffers have done to mitigate the homophobia?
There's a lot they could have done.
Within the show, if they're intending to make Byler canon, which I do believe they are, I think that season 4 should have officially broken up Mileven and also have had an undeniably, overtly romantic moment for Byler that the GA can't miss. Even if the final cabin scene had a hand touch rather than the shoulder touch, that would have been enough for me. Because yes, to me, and you, and 250k other Bylers, it has been obvious; but for the GA and Milevens, they have purposefully left enough wiggle room to keep them on the hook. Again, I respect the straight-bait, but if they're prioritizing straight-baiting over protecting their queer fans, that's not a great look.
But to me, much more important is what they could do outside the show. While there are occasional posts about Byler on various Stranger Things social media, I feel like there is so much more that could be done to show support to the ship and its queer fans, especially if it is endgame.
They could have explicitly and overtly addressed Will's sexuality on all channels after the release of season 4 instead of leaving it to Noah Schnapp.
They could have explicitly stated in an interview that Will is an equally viable love interest for Mike as Eleven is going into season 5 instead of prioritizing shock value and spoiler avoidance over the wellbeing of their queer fans.
Most vitally, they could have acknowledged/addressed the presence of homophobic fans and bullying in the fandom and explicitly condemned hateful folks as misunderstanding the show's core values. Take for example how Rick Riordan responded to racist fans criticizing the casting for Annabeth & Grover:
"The negative comments she has received online are out of line. They need to stop. Now. Anyone can be a hero. If you don’t get that, if you’re still upset about the casting of this marvelous trio, then it doesn’t matter how many times you have read the books. You didn’t learn anything from them."
After season 4's confirmation that Will is gay, they should have made an outright statement along these lines, that hate is unacceptable and that those who are hateful are fundamentally opposed to the values of the show. Instead they (or at least, Netflix) is more preoccupied with maintaining the general audience for as long as possible, even at the expense of the often-more-dedicated queer fans.
Really though, I'm more happy about a queer relationship being canon in such a mainstream show than I am upset about the lack of support for queer fans, because ultimately, this queer relationship and representation is offering support in a lot of ways. But they're doing this while also spending years allowing some of their biggest fans to be gaslit into thinking they're "delusional" for interpreting what the show is saying.
I guess ultimately I just feel like, if they're going to engage with queer stories and queer characters, they also have to have some responsibility for mitigating the negative impact they can have on real queer fans and queer spaces.
“that moment where your character just… looks. just looks at their love interest for more than five seconds and doesn’t understand why or how this earth can exist and the sun and moon exist and the sky can be an eternal source of happiness and yet this person right here can bring so much more warmth and comfort to them with just a single glance” you wld do this SOOOOOO well (as you wld all of them but this one has me w my head in my hands)
cicada my beloved happy happy bday i know this isn't exactly what u said but i tried hope it helps <3333
Annabeth really does not want to be having this conversation right now.
“I’m just saying,” If Silena has registered her disinterest, she doesn’t let it affect her flow. “It wouldn’t hurt. Besides, he owes you a date anyway, so you might as well, right?”
“It wasn’t a date.” Annabeth complains and Clarisse barks out a hearty laugh, leaning back against the stone steps in the amphitheatre and taking a sip of water. Annabeth scowls. “What? It wasn’t! We were supposed to catch a movie but he’s, like, totally into this other girl.”
“Is she pretty?”
“Kind of.” Annabeth thinks about it. “She’s got freckles. I suppose that’s pretty.”
“So you’re jealous.” Silena concludes. “Which means you totally like Percy, and therefore, coming back to my original point– you should ask him to the fireworks.”
Annabeth is not impressed, but it’s harder to wear it on her face when she’s spending all this effort fighting the outrageous heat that’s creeping up to her cheeks. “I don’t like Percy. He’s like– he’s like this thorn in my side.”
“He’s an idiot.” Clarisse agrees. Then she tilts her head to the side and considers it. “But I’d say you were more a pain in his ass than the other way around.”
“No way.” Silena shakes her head, interrupting before Annabeth could voice her outrage. “Annabeth’s right. He’s worse.”
“Annabeth is bossy.” Clarisse challenges.
“Percy is hyper-argumentative.” Silena counters.
“Annabeth is a hothead.”
“So is Percy.”
“Annabeth–”
“Hey!” Annabeth cuts in. “Annabeth can hear you, you know? And she doesn’t like what she’s hearing.”
“Fine. Then scram.” Clarisse kicks her ankle lightly with hers. “This practice session was a spectacular waste of time. We got no sparring done and if a war does come to us, I’m pretty sure Silena’s going to be the first to die.”
“Excuse me.” Silena turns on Clarisse then, holding up her perfectly manicured hands. “I happen to be gifted with these nails. You don’t know the damage I can do, La Rue.”
“Your acrylics  versus the Lord of Time. Interesting.” Clarisse pretends to think about it. “Let’s hope Annabeth kills the Prophecy Kid this summer so none of us have to deal with that coming to fruition.”
“Whatever. Give me two weeks and I’ll kick your ass with a spear.”
“I’d like to see you try.”
Even as Annabeth sits between her friends, she feels herself drifting away– as if the scene in front of her is already becoming a memory; as if this is one of those moments she’ll revisit every so often as she moves forward– like she stood on the precipice of the End of something, even if she doesn’t know what yet.
“Annabeth.” A man’s voice draws her out of her thoughts. All three girls turn around to see Quintus standing over them, Percy only a few steps behind him. He peers around their sword fighting teacher to meet Annabeth’s eye, his lips quirking upwards slightly, and her heart somersaults. “I was hoping you and Percy could give me a hand– clean out the armoury for me?”
“It’s my time off.” Annabeth whines. Why is Percy always dragging her into sharing his chores with him?
“Come on, Wise Girl.” Percy matches her tone. “Two pairs of hands are better than one, right?”
“I hate you.” Annabeth grumbles, taking Quintus’ hand and letting him pull her off the ground. Silena wriggles her eyebrows at her and Clarisse smirks, so when their teacher’s back is turned to her, Annabeth flips them off. It does little to subdue them, though, because their cackles echo through the amphitheatre long after she’s left.
“What is this?” Percy pulls out a wicked blade attached to the end of a long, heavy stick. “Oh my gods, is this a javelin? I didn’t even realise we had them here.”
“Yeah,” Annabeth snorts. “As if you could fight with one of those.”
“You calling me weak?”
“I’m just saying that your arms are kind of skinny.”
“You’re one to talk.” Percy cries. There’s something so endearing about the indignation on his face that Annabeth bursts out laughing. Sometimes it’s like Percy does it deliberately– knows exactly how to behave to make uncontrollable giggles bubble in her tummy. If he notices, he doesn’t pay mind to it, instead focusing on clearing the nearest table and resting his elbow on the surface. He looks up at her, unspoken challenge framing his features in a special kind of light. “I’m way stronger than you– so only come here if you’re willing to lose.”
“As if.” Annabeth rolls her eyes, taking his hand and grinding her bony elbow painfully into the wood. Percy’s eyes leave hers, drifting to their hands, his fingers curled tightly around hers, and she doesn’t miss the way his breathing stutters slightly. An unattractive smugness fights its way to her lips. Maybe Silena was right– she could totally ask him to the fireworks– but right now, she has other priorities. She leans forward. “You’re going to get beaten by a girl, Seaweed Brain.”
“Oh yeah?” Percy, as always, matches her exact energy, narrowing his eyes and lowering his voice. “Joke’s on you, I’m used to it.”
Annabeth grins. “Good.”
“Okay, on three.” Percy says. “One, two–”
The back of his hand crashes into the table. For a moment, he looks confused, blinking at their still entwined hands resting on the wooden surface. Slowly, his grip tightens around her palm, his smooth features twisting into a scowl.
“You cheated.” He says, dangerously quiet. Then he pushes back against her hand until he can pin it down. Annabeth struggles to pull away, but it’s like fighting against iron.
“Let go.” She laughs, but Percy doesn’t budge. The same evil part of her that cheated crows. “Percy, stop.”
“No. You cheated. You have to pay.” Percy’s face breaks into a grin, his shining eyes bright in the dimly lit glorified cupboard they’re stuck in. In a flash, he’s on her side of the table, his fingers digging into her sides, and a squeal escapes her.
“Percy!” Annabeth feels her knees giving way as she drops to the floor, taking her friend down with her. When he finally does stop tickling her, she’s out of breath, her cheeks sore from the laughter. Next to her, Percy leans his head against the leg of the table, his face flushed and his chest heaving, a manic smile on his lips.
“You’re such an asshole, Annabeth.” He doesn’t sound offended by it.
Instead of replying, Annabeth is content to watch him catch his breath, leftover laughter still breaking out from him in throaty splits. Miraculously, his hair is even messier now than it was this morning, but Annabeth thinks it suits him. His lips are parted, and for a second, she wonders what it might be like to be able to lean over and kiss him. She’s never kissed a boy before– but Silena and Clarisse have, and they both seem to enjoy it a ton. For a while in the winter, she’d considered kissing one of the boys at Camp, but they’re all gross. She wonders if she’d like kissing Percy.
It’s like that a lot. Ever since the winter, when he’d admitted that he’d only gone on a quest to save her– Annabeth had found it difficult to even think about him without her stomach exploding into a kaleidoscope of butterflies. Now that he’s back at Camp, back with her– she’s starting to realise just how much more she likes him than anybody else around here. This isn’t how she felt about Luke, not how she felt about any of the boys she’d had a crush on before. With Percy, she’s come to realise, everything is different.
How is it possible, Annabeth finds herself wondering, that she exists in this world at the same time that he does? He’d come into her life, a whirlwind of grief and anger and adventure and something she doesn’t want to dwell on– and he’d healed her, inside and out. Not by trying; not by finding all her broken pieces– but simply by existing. Percy lives, and Annabeth is better for it. He lives, and the sun above them dims, the moon loses her brilliance, the colours in the world dull. Does he know that?
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Percy draws her out of her thoughts, touching his cheek consciously. “Have I got something on my face?”
“Yeah.” Annabeth lies hollowly, reaching over and brushing her thumb over his jaw. Is that a stubble? When’d he get so mature? She swallows thickly. “You’re good.”
“Thanks.” Percy mumbles, holding her gaze. It’s a loaded, slow moment, but she draws away first. She always does– in all honesty, Annabeth is a coward. He must sense it, because he brushes his fingers over her wrist and says, “It’s a shame, you know.”
“What?”
A wicked smile grows on his lips. “I never got to beat your ass.”
“You’re deluded, Percy.” Annabeth pokes his shoulder. “You couldn’t beat me if my arm was broken.”
“Wanna bet?” Percy demands. “Rematch. I win, you tell everyone at Camp how strong and impressive I am. You win, and… I’ll shut up about my strong, impressive arms for an entire summer.”
Annabeth can’t fight the smile only he ever seems to bring out in her. He’d chosen his words carefully, just as he always did. A new dawn falls upon them, an idea of this summer being one of many more. A summer in the future after Annabeth’s victory when Percy could go back to bragging about his bicep curl personal bests. What could be better? “You’re so on.”
Daughter of the Sea
Chapter Nine: I Play Rock, Paper, Scissors with my Brother (Read on AO3 here)
That night at the campfire I sat next to Percy, who sat next to Annabeth. The two of us were our own Poseidon Cabin section, with a little trident banner and everything. We continued getting to know each other, playing 20 questions and swapping all the stories we could. We spent the whole evening smiling and laughing, and even Annabeth seemed to forgive Percy for all the fear and worry he caused. I hadn’t seen her smile in weeks, and now hers was the brightest one around the campfire.
The mood of the entire camp was better than I had ever seen it, and the flames reached at least 10 feet into the air, burning a bright pink. It was as if Percy being back released a weight off everyone’s shoulders, and now they were free to relax and be themselves again. I had never heard people sing that loud, or dance so wildly, and the sing-along lasted way longer than it should have.
Everyone carried that energy to their cabins, skipping and dancing all the way back. People called goodnights to each other as they went into their respective buildings, and my brother, Annabeth, and I were some of the last ones straggling at the back of the pack. At least everyone at camp had come up to Percy at some point to express their thanks that he wasn’t dead, ask about the quest, or vaguely threaten him (mostly the Ares Cabin), and it was so sweet to watch. The whole camp loved him, and it was easy to see why.
I pushed open the door to Cabin Three, not even thinking about it. I was all the way to my bed before I turned around and saw Percy still standing in the doorway.
“What’s wrong?”
He took a moment to look around the cabin, taking it all in, before stepping through the threshold.
“It just feels like forever since I’ve been here. There were a few times on the quest I thought I’d never see this place again.” He slowly walked to his bunk bed and began to take his shoes off. He cracked a smile as he looked to my side of the room.
“Plus, it looks different in here.”
I blushed sheepishly. “I’m sorry if it's too girly now.”
He just shook his head.
“Not at all, I think your side is cool. I like your trinkets.”
“Thanks.”
It was quiet for a bit, and a little awkward as we both tried to figure out what the new dynamic was. I felt like an intruder in my own home, and I could tell Percy didn’t want to step on my toes, even though this had been his room, and his alone, for the past three summers.
Eventually we were both changed into our pajamas and sitting on our beds, neither one of us moving to turn off the lights.
“So how do you like it in Cabin Three?” I could tell he was trying to be nice, and his voice was sincere.
“It was lonely at first.” I didn’t see any reason to not be honest with him, which was strange. I was usually very guarded, and I didn’t let anyone in. But with Percy, it felt different. “But eventually I settled in. Some nights it was nice to be alone after a long day, but other times I wished I had someone else with me, like all the other kids do.”
He nodded and played with the edge of his comforter.
“I get that. I remember my first summer in here all by myself. I hated being alone.”
“Really?”
“Oh yeah, I remember being so jealous of all the other campers who had siblings. Don't get me wrong, being a child of Poseidon is cool and all, but it can be super lonely.”
“I’ve noticed that.”
Percy smiled at me, and his eyes were kind. “Good thing we don’t have to worry about that anymore, huh?”
I smiled back at him. “Just don’t die on that quest.” I meant it as a joke, but I saw the way his shoulders slumped as he looked down.
“Yeah…that.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean—”
“No, it's okay. I know you were kidding, but it's a fair thing to say. I could die down there.”
I looked at him with concern, but I couldn’t think of anything to say.
“I accepted that a long time ago,” He continued, “although I would rather stay alive.”
“I think we’d all prefer if you stayed alive,” I raised my eyebrows, preparing to push my luck, “especially Annabeth.”
Percy turned beet red in seconds, and I knew my words had done exactly what I wanted them to.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I rolled my eyes dramatically. “I may be new, but I’m not blind.”
I could tell he was trying hard not to smile, but he was failing.
“She’s just…a really good friend. That's all.”
“Oh, yeah, sure, that must be it.” He tried to stay serious, but we both burst out laughing in seconds.
“Okay fine, maybe you're right. But just don’t tell anyone, okay?”
“I won’t.” I said with a smile. In my head I added, but I don’t think I would need to tell anyone, anyway.
“We’d better get to bed,” He said with a sigh. “I leave tomorrow at dawn.”
“Oh yeah, your quest.”
“Annabeth’s quest.”
“Right.”
We were silent for a moment, before Percy spoke again. “How ‘bout this: when I get back, I’ll show you my favorite place to swim at camp.”
It wasn't much, but it was time I would get to spend with him. And I did love swimming.
“Deal.”
He smiled and laid back on his bed.
“Goodnight, Angie.”
“Goodnight, Percy.” I answered as I laid down.
I closed my eyes and listened to the faint sound of waves you could always hear from Cabin Three.
“Ummm, Ange?”
“Yeah?”
“Can you get the lights?”
“But I’m already under my covers.”
“Yeah, so am I.”
I groaned in frustration.
“You’re closer!”
“Barely!” His voice was getting whiny. “Plus…”
“Plus what?”
“You’re newer.”
“I knew you were going to say that!”
“It's true!”
I propped myself up on my elbows and looked over to him, only to see that he was already staring at me.
“There’s only one way to settle this.” I said, and his eyes were deadly serious.
“Rock, paper, scissors?”
“Rock, paper, scissors.”
His eyes twinkled as he smiled. “You're on.”
We were in position in seconds, ready to battle from across the room.
“Rock…paper…scissors…shoot!” At the same time, I put scissors, my go-to first move, and Percy made a strange hand sign.
“What is that?” I asked.
“It's a gun.”
“A gun?!”
“A gun. Beats everything.”
“But that’s not fair! That's not a thing!” I couldn't believe what was happening.
“It's a thing now.” His voice was smug, and I was having none of it.
“But…but…” I was trying to think of how a gun would interact with all three objects, and was very upset to come to the conclusion that it would beat them all.
“Don't worry,” he gloated as he snuggled into his sheets. “You’re not the only person to fall for it. Now…lights please!”
Grumbling and complaining, I got out of my comfy bed, stalked across the floor, and turned off the lights. I made my way back to my bed carefully, not wanting to trip over anything. I somehow got the feeling that that would make Percy feel even more triumphant. Once I was back in bed, I heard him call out,
“Thank you!”
“Oh, don't mention it.”
He laughed, and it was quiet for a while. I thought he had fallen asleep, and I was just about to close my eyes when he spoke again, his voice low and sincere.
“Angie?”
“Yeah, Percy?”
“I’m glad that I have a sister. You’re pretty cool.”
I was thankful for the darkness, because my eyes instantly filled with tears.
“You’re pretty cool, too. Thanks for coming back.”
There was a heavy silence before he spoke again, his voice softer.
“Goodnight, Ange.”
“Goodnight.”
Within the next minute he was snoring lightly, and I fell asleep with a smile on my face.
He and Annabeth left early the next morning, and I dragged myself out of my cozy bed to say goodbye. Argus, the many-eyed head of security, was taking them into Manhattan to try the crazy plan Percy had come up with. No one told me what it was, but I could guess from the pieces I overheard, and it did sound insane. They would be going back into the Labyrinth, and it was probable that the worst was yet to come, so it was sad to say goodbye.
Now that I had met him, I didn’t want to let him go. There was so much more I wanted to know, so many questions I didn’t get to ask. Stop worrying so much, I told myself. They’ll be fine. I’ll see him soon.
Percy gave me a big hug, and Annabeth gave me a wry smile to say goodbye. I stood on the top of Half Blood Hill next to a sleeping dragon, smoke curling out of its nose as it snored, and watched until their car disappeared. Then I made my way back to Cabin Three and went back to sleep.
The sound of the breakfast conch woke me up for the second time, and I dragged myself out of bed yet again to start my day. There was a strange energy in the Camp, as if new life had been pumped into everyone. It wasn't as joyful as it was the night before, but it wasn’t the sullen atmosphere that had been hanging around the last two weeks. It was as if everyone was on edge, waiting for something big to happen. And it felt like when it did come, everyone would be ready. There was a new hope in everyone, and some people even believed that the quest would be successful and stop the attack before it came.
The day passed normally, and I was actually starting to make some progress with my throwing knives skills. I made it to the top of the rock wall without touching the lava once, and I almost beat Travis Stoll sparring with a sword. So close.
Our sword instructor, Quintus, had disappeared a couple days ago, so Chiron had put the Stoll brothers in charge of training me in this area. It seemed like a strange choice at first, but I soon saw that the two were Jack-of-all-trades and there was hardly anything they weren’t good at. They pushed me, telling me that I would have to work harder if I ever wanted to beat Percy. Sometimes that motivated me, sometimes that made me want to slash them across the face. Either way, it worked.
I didn't feel as lonely that day, even though I sat at meals by myself and went back to an empty cabin. I had finally met my brother, and I finally knew for certain that I wasn’t by myself.
The next day was much of the same: training, solitary meals, and working on my abilities with Chiron. The centaur seemed distracted, and I could guess why. Percy and Annabeth went back into the Labyrinth a day ago, and there had been no word. The whole Camp was operating under the assumption that no news was good news, but people were still nervous.
It wasn’t until the next day, June 30th, that things got crazy.
It was mid-morning, and I was walking along the pebbled shore of the lake, trying to make waves. I was great at this task when I was angry, but Chiron and I had been working on not letting my emotions control my abilities, and to be able to use them at will. So far, I hadn't been very successful. I was focusing so hard on the water I almost missed it completely—five pegasi swooping down over the water, making for the center of camp. I took off running instantly, and I wasn't the only one.
I reached the grassy area in the middle of the Cabins not long after the flying horses touched down, carrying Percy, Annabeth, and three other people I didn’t recognize. Well, maybe people wasn't the right word. One of them was a scrawny, emo looking kid, probably two years younger than me, but the other two were not human at all. One of them was a satyr with a hat on, and the other was a large cyclops. Judging by everyone's reaction, though, I guessed he was okay to be in Camp.
Percy was already updating Chiron on what they had learned since returning to the Labyrinth. He revealed that our sword instructor, Quintus, was actually Daedalus, and had already sided with the Titans. He also told him that Kronos was rising, and that sent shockwaves through all the campers who were there. Chiron didn’t seem phased by anything, though.
“I feared as much.” Chiron said. “We must hurry. Hopefully you have slowed the Titan lord, but his vanguard will still be coming through. They will be anxious for blood. Most of our defenders are already in place. Come!”
I didn’t stick around to hear whatever happened next, instead running to the edge of Camp where most of the Campers were gathering to get ready for whatever army was coming up through Zeus’ fist. Percy hadn’t seen me when he landed, and I thought that was a good thing, for now.
It was the biggest military operation I had ever seen. Everyone was in the clearing, dressed in full battle armor. The Hephaestus cabin had set up traps around the entrance to the Labyrinth—razor wire, pits filled with Greek fire, rows of sharpened sticks to deflect a charge, two giant catapults. The Ares cabin was on the front line, drilling in phalanx formation with Clarisse calling orders. Apollo’s and Hermes’ cabins were scattered in the woods with bows ready, many up in the trees, and I spotted Cadence and Will set up at a makeshift medical tent, both of them with weapons at the ready. Even the dryads and satyrs were armed and ready to defend their home.
I saw Annabeth come up the hill and join her siblings who had set up a command tent and were directing operations, a gray banner with an owl on it waving in the front. Even the Aphrodite kids and Dionysus twins were making themselves useful. The only person who didn’t have a job was me, and I stood and just stared at the controlled chaos around me. Percy and Chiron came up the hill next, both of their faces grave. They walked straight to me, Percy giving me a quick hug before looking at the centaur.
“It’s not enough.” Chiron muttered. Percy looked like he was thinking about a hundred different things, and he gazed around with intense, calculating eyes, surveying everything. Chiron looked down at me.
“I want you to go to the medical tent and stay there. Help with any wounded that you can.” My eyebrows furrowed, and I looked up in shock.
“But…I don’t know how to do that.”
“It will be the safest.”
“But I want to fight!” The centaur sighed and Percy looked away.
“I know, but you’re not ready. You’ve only been here a few weeks—”
“And I've learned so much! I can do this, please let me help.” I looked to my brother for support, but he wouldn’t meet my eyes. It was clear he wasn’t going to contradict Chiron, no matter what he thought.
Chiron shook his head. “My word is final. I will not risk you for this, not yet. You have a greater destiny ahead.” With that, he turned to Percy, who was pretending to be very interested in a small yellow flower at his feet. “Stay with me, Percy. When the fighting begins, I want you to wait until we know what we’re dealing with. You must go where we most need reinforcements.”
I didn’t stick around to hear my brother's answer, storming away with a huff. For a split second, I swore the ground shook where I walked, but it was over as soon as it began. I was so angry I wasn’t paying attention to where I was walking, and I nearly ran straight into Cadence.
“Whoa! Watch where you’re—Angie? What's wrong?”
“Chiron won’t let me fight.” I gripped the hilt of the sword at my belt.
“He’s just trying to protect you.” Her voice was low and kind.
“But I want to help!”
“This will be a battle, Angie. A full-on battle. It’s not like sparring with the Stoll brothers, you could get seriously hurt.”
“Or you could die.” Will added from where he was bustling about in the tent.
“Or you could die.” Cadence agreed. A lump formed in my throat. I hadn’t really considered just how dangerous of a situation I was in. An army of monsters was about to come out of the ground, and I had only seen one or two monsters in my life. Part of me knew Chiron was right, that I wasn’t ready for this fight yet. But another part of me, a bigger part, wanted to be in the middle of it, needed to be side by side with my brother.
“I don't care!” I shouted indignantly.
“Well, everyone else does.” And with that, she grabbed my arm and dragged me back to the tent.
I had just crossed the threshold when the ground underneath me started trembling, and I was certain it wasn’t because of me. Everyone in the clearing stopped what they were doing. The head of the Ares cabin, Clarisse, barked a single order:
“Lock shields!”
Then the Titan lord’s army exploded from the Labyrinth, and all hell broke loose.
Literally.
Piece #1
Okay, I’m new here. i’m putting this out there because I’ve had this idea floating around my brain for months, and now I’ve got all this bits and pieces on my computer and I think I need input to motivate me and encourage me to sew all of this pieces together and possibly make a fic. So, lemme know. And we shall see. Also lemme know if you hate it and I should stop writing forever. Either or is acceptable and appreciated. Thanks and lots of love.
Piece of a Bit #1-- There are Christmas lights here. Annabeth addresses something but also nothing.
WC: 1400ish??
           Let’s make something clear; I don’t peel oranges. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good orange, a real quick way to get a solid vitamin D boost. But, there is not a force on this earth that would make me peel an orange.
           So, that’s why Percy does it. We had found ourselves sat out on the boys’ balcony, sitting side by side, touching shoulders, hips, legs. And, he peeled my orange.
“So,” He took a wedge for himself before handing me the remaining fruit. “Are we going to talk about it?”
“I don’t want to,” I rolled the orange in my hands. “If that helps answer your question.”
“How fun,” He quipped at me, tucking his hands in the pocket of his hoodie, and hunkering down, scooting down the wall until only his head and the tops of his shoulders were pressed there, his legs pressed against the bars of the railing, and he was looking up at me with those stupid eyes.
I rolled my eyes. “Okay, why is that fun?”
“Oh, because we’re gonna fight about that.”
I couldn’t help it, I snorted. “Is that right?”
“Are you telling me that you won’t start tearing at my jugular if I push you on this whole Christmas thing?”
“Well, I—” I stopped, leaning my head back and looking at the Christmas lights Piper and Frank had managed to wrestle to the ceiling. “Well, I wouldn’t go for the jugular at first.”
He bumped my arm with his shoulder. Even though it’s definitely about to snow, and I’m only wearing a jean jacket, I feel a little warm, I won’t lie. “No, obviously the first move is the eyes.” He deadpanned.
“What if I go?” I set the orange on the ground and pretend not to notice when it rolls off the edge. I’ve got that warm feeling in my chest and my arms, so I’ll ride this wave to straight to hell. I scoot down so I’m copying his posture, but I keep my legs criss cross apple sauce because I’m not 6’2”.
His head lolls towards me lazily. “That is the goal for me here, to get ya out to California.”
“Yeah, but why though?”
“Why what?”
“Why do you want me out there? If I’m out there, I’m not here, I can’t come to Christmas dinner and then what?” I’m staring at a pink light on the roof but I know he’s staring at me. “When would I give you your present? Who’s going to help Frank clean up after we do breakfast?”
I feel him sigh more than I hear it. “I’m pretty stupid, right?”
This one shocks me a little bit, so I feel my neck crick when my head snaps to look at him. At  this point, it doesn’t even shock me that we’re nose to nose. My heart rate barely speeds up. Eventually, you just learn how to dance with somebody, right?
“Erm, pardon?”
“I’m dumb, you would agree with that?” He has the longest, darkest eyelashes.
“I mean, I don’t know about dumb.” He’s got his beanie pulled down, and his hair is curling down in front of his eyebrows. His hood is pulled up. There are 16 freckles on the bridge of his nose. His breath smells like candy canes and oranges.
He only pulls back a little to rub a hand over his face, and then he’s right back. Nose to nose. “You should stay.” He stops for a second, but when he starts again, it’s full speed ahead. “I wanted you to go to California and feel brave and good and like, loved and shit.”
God damn it.
“But, maybe being brave is about leaving and staying gone, because it doesn’t really matter to me how your dad feels. What matters to me is that you are warm and happy and taken care of,”
God damn it.
He takes a deep breath, closing his eyes and letting his head fall back against the wall. “And, you just don’t get that in California, right? That’s here.”
I have to swallow really hard and really loud, and damn near snap my own neck to turn my head away from him. “Yeah,” I burrowed down deeper into my sweatshirt. “That’s here.”
“I want what’s good for you, Chase.”
“Well, then, I’m glad you’re not going to keep pushing me back towards California,” I said, watching my words blow out in white puffs. “I was starting to think you didn’t like me as much anymore,”
“Oh, whatever.” He put a freezing cold hand to the side of my head and pushed. “You know I’m first in line for your majesty any day of the week.”
You see, stuff like that used to feel a lot bigger, used to make all the blood in my body collect in my cheeks. He used to drop stuff like that on me and I’d stare at him like he’d just made the ground crack open under his feet. But, that was before Thanksgiving. A lot changed after Thanksgiving, as I’m sure you are beginning to realize.
“God, shut up, Percy.”
“You’re irresistible, Annabeth,” Was the response I was given back, all giddy. “I literally cannot control myself around you.”
“You’re going to say something like that one day and I’m going to start believe you.”
“You should,” he responds simply. “Believe me. You should.”
If I turn my head towards him one more time, I will never look away. And I have things to do, people to see, homework and a job and other friends. So, I don’t look at him.
“But, then who will effortlessly charm all the lady bartenders into free drinks when you’re spoken for?”
Out of the corner of my eye, I can tell he’s still smiling but he’s not looking at me anymore. He’s picked a point on the ceiling to give that smile to. Lucky bitch, that ceiling is. “Ah right, me and all my effortless charm. The hundreds of free drinks we’d miss out on.”
           He’s never charmed a single person in his life, I don’t think. He’s very pretty, I don’t want anybody here to think otherwise, but he’s got a… bitter edge to him and a pretty harsh sense of humor. Makes it hard to like him most of the time.
“It’d be at least, like, three.” Like I said, he’s very pretty. He’s definitely gotten a drink or two paid for.
There’s a rustling, I can sense him sitting up and adjusting. But, still I don’t look at him, because again, I have things to do for the rest of my life. Suddenly, though, there’s two 20 dollar bills in my lap.
“I told you, Perce, you don’t have to pay me to hang out with you anymore.”
His fingers are on my chin, forcing me to abandon any and all future plans from now until death. “I figure that’ll buy you a few drinks, right?”
Oh.
           See, here’s the thing. I can’t do this. I can’t. Because he’s my friend, my best friend probably. And, he's good. I’ve got a pretty high opinion of myself, but he’s better than me. I want to do this, believe me. But, it can’t always feel like this, right? And what if, when it stops feeling like this, it’s done and it’s over with, and then life is worse because I don’t have Percy anymore? That makes sense, doesn’t it?
“Percy,” It comes out like a warning, or maybe like a plea. Like I’m begging him not to say what he might say, because I won’t say what he wants me to say. Or maybe I could. I don’t know anymore.
His hand moves as he holds both up in surrender. There’s nothing on his face that would make me think he’s upset, because, seriously, he’s that good. “I’m just saying,”
“I know.”
“Could be fun,”
“Could be disastrous.”
“See, to me, that sounds fun.”
“Volcanic eruption, and you—you’re inside the volcano. Mass carnage. People cry. I have to tell your mom that I’m responsible for exploding you.” Seriously, please tell me that makes sense because, he looks at me with eyes of what could actually be sea glass, and it’s really hard to stand your ground against that.
He rolls the sea glass eyes at me, but a little laugh comes out too. Deep breath taken. “Okay, Annabeth, whatever you say.” He pushes himself up to his feet and holds out a hand to me. I take it because there has never been any other choice to make. “Remember what I said though,”
“Which part? You talk a lot.”
“I’m first in line, don’t go disrespecting my title of line leader.”
Sometimes, man, you just have to laugh so you don’t go word vomiting about how you’re deeply and desperately in love with Percy Jackson. If you ever met him, you’d know what I’m saying.
So, I laugh.
If you could change everyone’s opinion of 1 character, who would it be and why?
Luke Castellan. I hate how everyone ignores that he was just as much of a victim as every other demigod in the series.
A lot of the fandom depicts him as this whiny 20 something year old baby man child with daddy issues and anger management problems and has crushes on teenage girls (Annabeth and Silena) which isn’t true. (Ok that part about anger may not be entirely false but we’ll get to that in a minute)
First off I hate the mischaracterzation of Luke liking Annabeth and Silena romantically because he didn’t.
It’s obvious he saw Annabeth as a little sister and it’s obvious he meant “did you love me?” as “were we really like a family? Was I a good big brother figure before me and Kronos screwed everything up?” and Annabeth and Percy who knew she had a crush on Luke for some time (that Luke may not have been known about) misinterpreted what he meant by thinking it was romantic like Annabeths feelings when really Luke meant it platonically
I make a point later on that Kronos is behind 99% of the evil plans and I’m pretty sure that was the case with Silena and Luke. I just don’t think Luke could have come up with something like that on his own he’s not naturally that much of a snake. Also Silena said he was “charming” that doesn’t always mean romantic attraction. It can mean polite, friendly, likable, charismatic, or sometimes funny. “Charming” does not mean Luke was flirting with Silena he was simply being polite and likable enough to convince Silena of Kronos’s cause. Now on to the real problems.
He had every right to be angry about being used like a puppet almost his whole life (by both gods and titans) when all he ever did was try to make things better for demigods and anyone oppressed by the gods and ended up getting caught in the crossfire and was forced to be a puppet for a titan in gods against titans war.
Almost nobody blames Hermes for sending Luke on that quest to mount Tam where Kronos found him, but everybody blames Luke for things that were far out of his control.
I hate that everybody ignores that Luke had just fought a 100 headed dragon all by himself and was just mauled in the face and was in one of the most traumatic moments of his life when Kronos started talking to him and telling him things he wanted to hear and comforting a traumatized and panicking teenager all so he could get into Luke’s head and groom and manipulate him to do his bidding.
I hate how everyone ignores that Kronos literally trapped Luke when he was a kid and trained him to be his perfect little pet well into his 20s until he tried to get away.
I hate how everyone ignores that Luke tried to get away from an abusive all powerful being that watched him like a hawk.
I hate that everyone ignores that Luke never wanted any demigods to die he wanted them to thrive he wanted to help them he wanted them to stop dying and the only way to do that is to destroy their oppressor (the gods) and here comes a child army of brainwashed 12-17 year olds defending their deadbeat neglectful parents that occasionally send them on traumatizing and deadly quests for some reason
I hate how everyone ignores that Kronos was the true villain and was behind 99% of all the bad things happening in PJO. I hate the Luke is always blamed for the bad stuff stuff he didn’t even do or the stuff he was forced to do but clearly didn’t want to do.
I hate that everyone ignores how even when Luke was actively dying he was still making sure this kind of abuse and oppression against demigods would never happen again.
I hate that Luke has become a scapegoat in this fandom.
I hate that almost nobody blames the true oppressors: Kronos, Hermes, Zeus, and the rest of the Olympian gods for knowing about the abuse and neglect and being silent about it.
Endangered | Chapter Six
Paul Lahote x OFC
Chapter One | Chapter Two | Chapter Three | Chapter Four | Chapter Five
Summary: Vampires and wolves are not the only supernatural creatures to walk the earth, and they are certainly not the only ones in Forks, Washington when Charlotte Annabeth Swan, "Anna", moves in with her uncle after the unfortunate demise of her parents.
Some may misidentify her as a witch, but that’s fine, she would rather them think that anyway. But the Volturi know the truth, and they are closing in on her.
Tumblr media
The next day was Bella’s 18th birthday, so as much as it killed me, I put my night with Paul on the back burner of my mind until tomorrow. Bella had told me in the days leading up to this that she hated the idea of being older than Edward, and that her anxiety was skyrocketing every day. I wanted to support her and make sure she had a great day despite her worries. I had even gotten up early to start prepping for breakfast.
Climbing back up the stairs, I smile at the good morning text Paul sent me before he fell asleep, just like every morning. I asked him why he took the time after exerting himself so much on patrol, and he made my heart soar with his answer.
“You’re always the last thing I’m thinking of when I’m about to fall asleep, and I want you to know that. I’m just lucky enough to wake up and see your reply, and you get to be the first thing on my mind when I wake up.”
“Who knew Paul Lahote was such a romantic,” I said.
“Don’t tell anyone, I can’t ruin my reputation.”
My thoughts are interrupted by Charlie knocking on my door frame. I am already almost ready for the day, just waiting for the rest of the house to stir awake.
“Ready?” he asks. I shake the present in my hand in the air as a response.
“Ready.”
Turning, He knocks on Bella’s door, and she mumbles a “come in.”
I skip into the room, my cheery demeanor making her frown.
“Happy Birthday Bella!” I sing. Charlie repeats me, though way less enthusiastically.
She manages a smile, before seeing the gifts in our hands. Her annoyance was plain on her face.
“I thought we agreed on no presents?”
Mine doesn’t count,” Charlie speaks up, “Mine’s not wrapped.”
“Yeah,” I interject, “and I would never agree to that so I don’t know what you could mean.”
She jokingly rolls her eyes before taking Charlie’s present, a camera, and then opening her mom’s. Finally, I hand her mine for her to unwrap. Inside is a pair of sapphire and silver drop earrings. They are petite, but perfect for Bella who prefers understated things, and, more importantly, they are embedded with some protection magic. The card I hand her explains it all.
“Wow,” she breathes out, “Anna, these are gorgeous.” I beam at her approval.
“I’m glad you like them! They were actually our grandmothers at one point, my dad gave them to my mom one year.”
“Anna, I can’t take these, they should belong to you.” She tries to hand them back by I step back, waving her off.
“Don’t even, I have plenty of jewelry from my mom, she was a bit of a fiend. I think these are perfect for you. Plus, I prefer gold.” I smirk and hug her quickly. Her shoulders lower in surrender before setting them on her bedside table.
Charlie sighs, “Eighteen, when did you get so old?” Bella's mood shifts immediately at his words, and I mentally curse.
“It’s not that old,” she stutters.
“I don’t know, is that a grey hair?”
Bella shoots up from her bed and rushes to her mirror. I hit Charlie on the shoulder, giving him a look, but he just chuckles. As Bella glares at him I make my way downstairs to make breakfast for everyone. When I moved in Bella was shocked to see that I was more than willing to pull my weight, instead of just leaving her to the cooking. Honestly, I think she prefers when I cook.
Bella pads down the stairs and makes herself a plate.
“You had time to make pancakes on a Monday?” She questions.
“It’s a tradition we had, I figured I could keep it going here,” I say with a shrug.
“Thanks, Anna, this is really great.” Even if I can’t read Bella, I can always tell when she is truly genuine.
All three of us sit around the small table, and Charlie reminds us once again to not go into the woods.
“Especially you Anna, there’s a lot of activity around the Rez.”
“Yeah, what do you do over there all the time anyway?” Bella asks, stabbing the last of her pancake with a fork.
“Oh, uhm,” I hesitate, I hate that Bella doesn’t know about the wolves, but it’s not my secret to tell as much as I want her involved in that part of my life. I realize I’ve trailed off, and refocus.
“I’m going on a date this Friday, with Paul Lahote. He lives on the Reservation,” it’s a small fib, but a believable one considering we hang out constantly anyway.
The name doesn’t trigger any bells for Bella, but Charlie nods.
“That’s great Anna, by the way he looks at you, I’m surprised he didn’t ask sooner,” Charlie remarks, “I’ll have to make sure to clean the guns on Friday.”
“Uncle Charlie,” I deadpan.
“What? It’s what your dad would do, I’m honoring his memory.”
“My dad hated guns.” I point out.
“Well, I’m sure he would have made an exception.”
I roll my eyes and clean up mine and his plates. Joking about my parents was still a little rough for me, but it kept their memory and their energy fresh in my mind. It didn't bother me when Charlie did it. He is mourning just as much as I am.
“My car or yours?” I ask Bella as she finishes her breakfast.
“What now I have to drive on my birthday too?” She jokes. I scoff and grab my keys from the hook.
“Come on Your Highness, let’s go. I’m sure Edward is eager to see you.”
-------------------------------
When we pull into the parking lot, Mike, Jessica, Eric, and Angela are crowded around a car together.
“The Swan girls are here!” Mike shouts, a smile on his face.
“Big day Bella, you ready?” Jessica asks, and Bella freezes. I look at her and shake my head, I followed instructions to keep her birthday on the DL.  Noticing the expression on her face, Jess continues
“R and J essay due?” She continues, Bella's face is still twisted, so I jump in to take the heat off her.
“So not excited to sit through the version of that without Leo,” I complain.
“Oh my god I know, kill me now,” Jess whines. The conversation continues until Edward appears, and the group disperses, the clear distaste for him on all their faces. Before leaving, I turn to wave at Edward to be friendly, and he motions for me to come over. By the time I make it to them, I know why. Bella is talking to Jacob.
“Jacob in the doghouse?” He asks, sounding a little sarcastic. I cross my arms and avoid his eyes.
“That’s not as clever as you think since he has no clue about it yet.”
“Oh, I still think it’s very clever actually,” He pauses, surely reading Jacob’s mind, “He’s worried about running into you after what he said.”
“Does it ever get tiring, not being able to shut it off?”
“No, I never get tired,” he says with a smirk, “He’s sorry about what he said though. I’m surprised Paul let him keep his head after that.”
“Yeah, well, he knows if anything I would rather be the one to deal with it. I’m sure Billy already ripped him a new one.”
“I can confirm that.” He chuckles, not taking his eyes off of them.
Bella starts to walk back to us, and Jacob looks at me with a pained expression.
“He wants to talk to you without your protection detail around,” Edward whispers to me.
I turn around and flip my hair over my shoulder.
“Sucks for him.”
I quickly walk to my first class to avoid Jacob.
--------------------------------------
At lunch, Alice greets me with a hug. Jasper just nods in acknowledgment. He still isn’t comfortable being too close to me, but it’s getting better throughout the school year.
“Those earrings you gave Bella were gorgeous, they will match perfectly with her dress tonight,” she sings, leaning into me.
“Speaking of dresses, is my normal wardrobe really that terrible I couldn’t dress myself?” I ask.
“No, you are definitely the more fashionable Swan, you just can’t mess with the vision.”
“Literal or metaphorical?”
“Both,” she says with a delighted look.
“You don’t think the dress is a little much? It’s not my birthday.”
“Not at all, I’ve seen you in it, and you look gorgeous.”
Alice’s eyes are wide and dreamy, and I’m confident she’s really seeing what everything will look like tonight.
“We’ll see, what time do you need me to come over? I don’t want to crash Edward and Bella on the car ride over.”
“Seven is good!”
Eric and Jessica sit down at the table as she quiets down, chatting about their essays, ending my conversation with Alice, both of us trying to keep our promise about her birthday.
-------------------------------------
Alice's choice of dress, while extravagant for a small birthday party, was gorgeous. With a sweetheart neckline and delicate off-the-shoulder sleeves, the dress a soft pink, with darker pink flowers and greenery across the bodice. There is ruching across the torso and waist, giving me quite an impressive figure.
“Damn,” I admit under my breath, looking at myself in the mirror. I left my hair down in its natural curls, with minimal makeup.
I wish Bella had a birthday more often if this is the dress I’m given just for going. I spray some perfume on myself and grab my purse, right as my phone rings. Paul.
“Well, hello there,” I answer, putting him on speaker to finish putting on my heels.
“Hey sunshine, do you have a moment to come outside before you leave?”
“Yeah, I have a few minutes. Are you here?” My stomach flutters.
“Yeah, I’m on patrol right now, but wanted to check on you before letting you walk into the house full of murderers.”
I take him off speaker and walk down the stairs.
“The only thing they murder is some woodland creatures. I can’t not go to my cousin's birthday love. I live with her and care for her, ya know?”
“I know, but it is against my entire nature to not stop you.”
“Well, I appreciate your restraint, where are you?” I say walking out the door.
“Forest,” he replies.
“Can you come to the driveway, I’m in heels.” I pout and he laughs at me.
“Of course, Princess, anything for you.”
“See, you’re joking but it’s music to my ears.”
I see him round the house and hang up the phone. I straighten my dress and look up to see Paul frozen, looking me up and down.
“How do I look?” I say and do a little spin. I go to step forward but catch a crack in the pavement, but Paul is by my side in a second, steadying me.
His eyes are locked on mine as he exhales sharply.
“Beautiful,” he says softly, tucking some hair behind my ear.
“Maybe I should have Alice dress me more often then.” I match his voice level.
He makes a face, “I think you are gorgeous no matter what, but you look happy and confident in this. That makes me happier than anything.”
His hand falls to my waist, and mine to his chest. Somehow a natural position for us now.
“Promise me that you will be hypervigilant tonight?” His tone is serious.
“I always am.”
“I’m on patrol tonight, so I won’t be on my phone. Call Emily or Jared if you need anything at all.”
“Understood.”
He sighs and looks towards the forest.
“I hate leaving you," he admits with a sigh.
“Well, how about we hang out tomorrow?”
He nods but stops himself from pulling away.
“Actually, I have something for you before you go.”
I look at him and he grabs my wrist gently, from his pocket he pulls out a braided leather bracelet, on the bracelet is a wolf charm, made of jade. Now it is my turn to be speechless.
“Oh wow,” I speak slowly, “Paul, this is gorgeous.” He closes the clasp on my wrist and I hold it close to my chest.
“I love it,” I announce.
“It was my mom's. My dad gave it to her when they started dating.”
“Oh, really?”
He nods and looks at me in earnest.
“Yeah, and this is me actually asking you on a date, Anna. It would be an honor to take you out. Are you free Friday?”
“I’m free any day if it means being with you.”
He kisses my wrist and my forehead. I think he’s about to kiss me again when a wolf howls in the distance and he sighs.
“Be safe, text me when you get there and when you leave, even if I won’t see it immediately. “
I nod and hug him for a moment.
“I’ve got to go,” I whisper. Reluctantly he lets me go and waits for me to back out of the driveway before running back into the forest.
-------------------------------------
Alice had gone all out for this evening. I walk on up to the door just as Emmet opens the door for me, raising his eyebrow and smirking at me.
“Well look, Tinkerbell’s here.”
I roll my eyes and push past him.
“Tinkerbell is a pixie, Emmet.” He shrugs.
“Close enough.”
He leads me to the living room where Alice is lighting the last of the candles. All around the room are flower arrangements, paired with elegant candles on ornate candlesticks.
“Wow, this is lovely Alice.”
“Why thank you, I told you about the vision,” she says with a smile.
Rosalie walks in with Esme and Carlisle, attitude apparent even in her posture. While Rosalie was miffed by the idea of another human getting involved with them, she lightened up after Alice filled them all in about my true nature. Once I started spending more time with the wolves than them, the few times I had seen her after were borderline pleasant. She sends me a nod, and honestly, I’ll take it.
“Anna,” Carlisle says, gesturing his hands out for a hug, “It’s nice to see your face around here.” I give him a quick hug in return. Carlisle and Alice were definitely the most comfortable for me to be around.
“It’s nice to see you too, I’m sorry about Sam. If I had known they were going to say anything...”
He holds his hand up, stopping me.
“It’s a non-issue, I’m happy for both of you, finding your other half like that is rare, we understand his concerns.”
“I appreciate it, but please, don’t take it too much to heart. I don’t hold exactly the same opinions as them.”
“I’m glad you said that. I would love to ask you over another day. There are some things about your knowledge of your history I am dying to know, if you’re comfortable.”
“Sure, I would like that.”
“It’s time!” Alice yells, gathering everyone’s attention. Carlisle smiles and I stand next to him and Esme as we wait for Alice to bring Bella and Edward down.
Walking down the stairs, I can’t help but admit that they are a beautiful couple. Bella doesn't see it, but she really is quite pretty, and Edward looks at her like she is the sun at the center of his universe.
The Cullen clan takes turns telling Bella Happy Birthday with some hugs thrown in, and Alice wants to go directly into presents.
I watch as she opens the necklace from Rosalie and learns about her new stereo system. Esme presents Bella with her final gift, but she struggles to unwrap it.
Time feels like it slows as I feel the magic from her earrings signaling to me that she’s in danger. I step in front of her on instinct as she flinches, muttering about a papercut. Blood runs down her finger as I grab her arm, my eyes wide.
I hear Jasper's growl from behind me, and turn to try to protect her, but Edward’s arm crashes into me, sending me and Bella flying into the wall, I barely manage to wrap my arms around her to prevent her slamming into it as hard as me. The air is knocked out of my lungs, and I yelp in pain. I push myself up and see the blood dripping down Bella’s arm.
Fuck, I think. Adrenaline rushes through my body and I immediately start muttering words to heal her, light sputters from my finger's tips as I hold onto her. Bella isn’t even looking at me, she’s staring at the pairs of golden eyes narrowed in on her. Jasper comes at us again, but I hold out my hand, throwing him back into the grand piano with an invisible force. One arm is outreached, holding steady magic to keep Jasper away, and the other is still on Bella, trying to stop the bleeding. Spells and intentions and incantations fly out of me under my breath, but it doesn’t seem to be fully working.
Jasper is being restrained, but the silence from everyone else in the room is terrifying. Carlisle appears next to Bella, looking at her arm.
“It’s okay,” he says, holding out a blood-stained hand. As soon as he is next to me, I drop my hands, also stained with Bella’s blood and I put up an energy shield between us to keep anyone else away before going back to using my magic to try to help Bella. It looks like a transparent wall has formed, with shimmer surrounding it.
“Anna,” Carlisle’s voice is even, but worried.
“Carlisle you have to help her, I don’t know what’s happening, why it’s not working,” I cry, finally looking up at him.
“Anna,” He repeats, “You’re hurt. Don’t strain yourself.”
Looking down at myself, I notice the blood permeating my dress, the red slowly covering each flower. I inhale sharply and cry out; a shard of glass has lodged itself in between my ribs, and small cuts covered most of my right arm and legs. It didn’t feel deep enough to puncture my lung, but God did it hurt.
“Carlisle help her, please, she took the brunt of it from me. Take her first,” Bella pleads.
It now occurs to me that Bella wasn’t looking at the vampires out of fear for herself, but out of fear for me. Bella’s upper arm had wounds from the glass, but it was nothing compared to the amount of blood I was losing.
I look up at the golden eyes staring me down, looking like they are in a trance.
“No,” I demand, “I can’t be here.” Shakily, I stand up and press myself against the wall. Carlisle steps forward and as a reaction I shield myself, he flinches back as the barrier shocks him. I see his lips moving but, I am not registering the words he is saying.
My mother would be rolling in her grave right now. I would be dead if the people around me were anyone else. My head is pounding as I back away slowly towards the door. One by one, the vampires pull themselves from the room. I flinch as I hear a wolf howling like it’s right outside.
“Paul,” I whisper, he can feel when I’m in danger. I know he is close by, his panic filling my chest.
Carlisle is calming Bella down, as she pleads with him to help me.
“Let me get you fixed up first, okay Anna, then I’ll get Paul.”
I shake my head, “Please don’t make me stay here.”
Edward storms back into the room.
“Carlisle, they are outside,” His voice is strained, but Carlisle nods in acknowledgment.
I’m starting to feel woozy and unsteady on my feet as Carlisle approaches me again, resisting the shock it sends him. It’s getting weaker as I lose focus.
“Anna, let me help you. I can handle it. Everyone else has left the house.”
Nodding, I drop the shield, exhausted, and fall into Carlisle’s arms. He picks me up and takes me outside where Sam, Paul, and now Jared are standing at the forest edge arguing with Esme.
“She needs a hospital!” Sam spits out.
“No, I can’t go to the hospital,” I say weakly, grabbing all their attention. Esme steps back and Paul rushes to my side, shaking.
“What do you mean?”
“Magical blood doesn’t react the same as humans.” My breath hitches as I move, and the glass moves with me.
“Paul, I need to stitch her side, and possibly other places as well. It’s easiest if I do it in my office," Carlisle explains.
Paul growls at him, but Sam, ever the level-headed leader, takes control.
“Let us come up with you," he compromises.
“Of course.”
Sam nods and instructs Jared to stay outside as Carlisle explains all of the vampires except him will be out in the forest, looking for something else to turn their hunger on.
I can’t seem to make eye contact with Paul, even though it kills me to do so, but as my awareness of the pain increases, I don’t even open my eyes. Zeroing in on his emotions, I get hit with a storm, and it’s a little too much to decipher at the moment.
Carlisle is in his office in a second, laying me down on a flat surface.
“If you take the glass out, I can heal it,” I whisper.
“Anna, this is a lot of blood, and you spent a lot of energy protecting Bella. I think it might be best for me to stitch you up.” He cuts around the dress where the shard is on my side.
I huff and throw my head back. I try to link minds with him, but the connection isn’t strong enough.
“Is he coming?” I wonder out loud, clenching my fists as alcohol is poured over the wound.
“He’s outside the door, Sam is with him.”
“Is he freaking out?”
“That might be an accurate term.”
“Can you let them in?”
He nods, “Sam is trying to diffuse the situation beforehand.”
“Can we wait?”
“Let me assess the damage first.”
With metal tweezers, he pulls out the glass. It’s about two inches long but only went half an inch deep.
“Is it bothering you? The blood?”
“I will admit that there’s something more... tempting about you. But I can handle it.”
“But the others can’t?”
“It wouldn’t be wise to have them around right now. You are right to hold this secret so close to you. The Volturi have searched for Fae blood for years, and they would love to get a hold of someone so powerful as you Anna. It's a good thing you are so close to the wolves. It helps disguise you.”
I shudder at the thought. The tears in my eyes are not only from the pain but from frustration.
“Keep pressure on it, I'll go get Paul, okay?”
I bite my lip and nod. It only takes a minute before I can hear his footsteps. Bursting through the door, Paul is furious and scowling. This is the most rage I have ever felt pulsing off of him. Behind him, Sam is also fuming but is able to keep it on the inside, showing mostly concern.
Paul doesn’t say a word as he scans over me, jaw tense.
“Hi,” I smile weakly, “I’m okay.”
His entire body tenses.
“You are not okay.”
He’s still standing across the room. I put pressure on my side, over the gauze, and try to sit up, but whimper at the movement. That sets Paul off.
“I’m going to kill them.” He growls, turning, but Sam stops him.
“No,” putting a hand on Paul’s shoulder, “You will stay here, with her. I’ll deal with it.”
“Sam, get off me.”
“You’re going to leave her alone? Because you’re mad? Absolutely not. Go to her, protect her. And do not lay a hand on the doctor.” His last words are spoken as an Alpha order.
This is the closest I’ve seen Paul to exploding, and Sam looks at me, concerned.  Carlisle returns, pulling Bella into the office to also stitch her up.
Paul is still standing across the room.
“Can you come here please?”
“It’s not a good idea for me to be close to you.”
“That’s ridiculous. Please.” The tone of my voice and tears in my eyes is hurting him. Slowly, he takes a deep breath and walks forward. When he is standing in front of me, he gently helps me lay back down.
“It was an accident,” I explain.
“I don’t care.”
“I was able to shield us from them.”
“I still don’t care.”
“Are you mad at me?”
“Never.”
I press harder into my side now that the anesthesia has fully kicked in.
“It’s not that bad,” I try to sound convincing, but he doesn’t buy it.
“It looked bad as you fell limp in the vampire's arms,” he hisses.
“I was frantic, I was so worried about Bella I didn’t notice.”
Paul shoots a side-eye at Bella, quietly having a conversation with Carlisle.
“They could have killed you,” he says quietly, slowly.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” I tell him softly, “Just for right now, can we talk about it later?”
His jaw clenches and I reach out for his hand.
“The danger is gone, just be here for me, I hate needles.” I pout, and it takes the anger out of his eyes for a moment. Resigned, he sits on the table with me, letting my head fall into his lap.
“I guess you’ll be less inclined to kill someone if it means pushing me off of you,” I say adjusting to keep weight off my side.
“Anna please don’t joke right now. I am trying very hard to keep it together,” he admits.
“Sorry.” I squeak and grab his hand, “Thank you.”
Carlisle finally makes his way over, and Paul is like stone beneath me. It’s quiet as Carlisle stitches up my side and makes sure no other glass or cuts need stitches. He ends up stitching two places on my thigh in addition.
“Is Bella alright?” I ask.
“She’s fine, you protected her from most of the damage,” answers Carlisle.
“Maybe we need to have a talk about self-preservation,” Paul grumbles. I glare at him.
Carlisle finishes up and sets the gauze and blood on fire. I thank him, but Paul just nods in his direction.
I frown at the ruined dress, blood covering most of my torso and a tear down the side.
“I really liked this,” I sigh.
Carlisle hands me his suit jacket from earlier.
“Here, you can wear this, Anna,” He goes to put it on my shoulders, but Paul grabs my arm, eyes warning me not to trust him.
“Hey, it’s okay,” I whisper, “I really don’t want Charlie to see all the blood, and I don’t want to leave a bloody dress here.” Silently, he lets go and takes a step back.
“Thank you,” I say to Carlisle. He just smiles at me as he drapes it over my shoulders. It’s large enough to cover the whole dress, down to my thighs.
“Take me home?” I ask Paul.
“Anything to get you out of here.” He grabs my waist and gingerly lifts me off the table, not setting me down.
“I can walk,” I say defiantly.
“Not a chance.” We walk down the stairs to an empty house. Sam and Jared standing outside stoically.
“Anna,” Jared gasps, catching sight of me.
“I’m okay.” I try to dismiss them, but they both are scanning over my injuries and turning their noses at what I’m assuming is the smell of Carlisle’s jacket.
“Sam, I’m taking Anna home, I don’t want her to drive,” Paul announces.
Sam agrees, even going as far as to order one of them to drive me back and forth to school for the next week.
“Isn’t that a little much?” I ask, voice rising an octave.
“No, it’s not,” Sam says, and his word is final among the boys.
Sam opens the door for Paul, and he sets me in the passenger seat.
“You’re acting like an overbearing father.” I scold him.
Sam smiles, “Get used to it kid, you’re a part of the family now.” He ruffles my hair gently and shuts the door. He speaks to Paul lowly and seriously, and I can’t hear them even when I roll the window down.
Paul nods at Sam and gets into the driver's seat.
“Let’s go,” he says. I sigh and scoot closer to him, laying my head on his shoulder.
“Thank you,” I sigh.
He hums in response, and the exhaustion catches up to me. I fall asleep before we leave the Cullen’s driveway.
Reasons why people hate Annabeth Chase and why I disagree. Warning: this a very long rant and some of these might be a little controversial
1. Annabeth didn’t have any trauma as a child compared to Percy she was only being dramatic.
Does being attacked by hundreds of spiders and waking up in webs every night sound pleasant to you? With nobody believing her because they would go away?
Whenever they say she didn’t suffer at home there are always some underlying tones of them thinking abuse isn’t abuse if it isn’t physical, and then translating that into Annabeth having a good childhood and making things up.
Why would she want to have a bad childhood is my question? And true it may seem like it wasn’t so bad since Percy even said it didn’t seem like it was as bad as she described it upon first meeting her parents, but I don’t even agree with Percy thinking that because why would he, of all people, not understand that people can hide behind nice faces? I honestly think that part was on Rick because he’s kind of gone back and forth with Annabeth’s home situation so it’s a little confusing.
But back to why would she want to have a bad childhood I think those people are the kind that compare trauma and thinkhaving more trauma=being better. But last time I checked, having a bad home situation/childhood isn’t really something people should want for themselves.
Annabeth may have not been physically abused but being accused of playing tricks to make webs appear on her skin instead of being comforted, being reprimanded for accidentally scaring her brothers even though she was the one being attacked, being blamed for attracting monsters even though she can’t control it, that doesn’t like like a happy time to me.
2. Annabeth is possessive of Percy too much she gets jealous way too easily.
Jealousy isn’t really a bad thing unless it is toxic, and I’ve seen no signs of Annabeth’s jealousy being toxic. Her haters, however, probably say otherwise.
The first time we see her get jealous is when Rachel shows up, and if I’m going to be completely honest why shouldn’t she be a little jealous? When she first sees Rachel it’s when Percy and her were supposed to go to the movies and she’s 14 years old so she’s going to act a little petty. Sorry, a traumatized 14 year old girl isn’t exactly going to handle her emotions like a mature adult. Annabeth has her little “was it hard?” moment and it was pretty obvious it was supposed to come off as funny and many people do think it was. If you didn’t think it was funny that’s fine and it’s also fine if you think it was wrong. But toxic? Really?
The next time we see her get jealous is when Percy comes back from Ogygia and she hugs him and storms off. Her best friends just died for two weeks but suddenly came back I think it’s understandable why she would be a little overwhelmed. Chiron says that she’s jealous because she knows where he was. She never really brings it up but she probably had some internal jealousy because why wouldn’t she be jealous when Percy could have chosen to live a peaceful life in Ogygia with Calypso, war-free. But he didn’t, and she didn’t bring it up(I think). Safe to say she was definitely not being toxic here.
The most prominent time she was jealous is when Percy says they need Rachel for the labyrinth and again, why wouldn’t she be jealous? It’s HER quest, and she was already insecure about Percy leaving her for Rachel so him telling her they need her for her quest is obviously going to make her mad. And she did act pettily towards Rachel and she did get ticked off very easily but let’s not forget where this all stems from.
Her entire life people have been abandoned her and left her for other people. Her dad, Thalia, Luke, and now she meets a mortal girl that has her best friend and crush’s attention which to her means she could potentially take Percy from her. Yeah, no shit she’s gonna be jealous. And it’s also a normal teenage emotion to be jealous of another person. So sorry, if a teenage girl doesn’t handle her emotions maturely.
Then, Percy reasonably spends his “last” summer away from camp and unfortunately for annabeth, with Rachel. This is not me saying Percy or Rachel did anything wrong but neither did Annabeth in being mad at him. It was mostly that she was just heartbroken because she was about to lose him, but he chose to spend his last moments being normal, something she could never be. She also spent most of her life being abandoned by someone so this was like it was happening all over again.
I’ve seen someone say she was jealous of Hazel and it was possessive because she automatically assumed Percy and her had something. Huh???? She thought of the possibility for 3 seconds and then was like, nah, she’s dating the other guy next to Percy. And it was a possibility because she saw Jason, who had lost his memories and didn’t know if he had someone waiting for him, get together with Piper so who’s to say it couldn’t have happened with Percy?
None of these seem toxic to me and it’s fine if you don’t like it for your relationship but clearly, Percy doesn’t think much about her jealousy afterwards once they got together. In fact, Percy gets jealous a lot too he’s just not as expressive about it.
3. She physically abused Percy.
This seems to be a popular one and people love to use it out of context. Annabeth and Percy both have sparring and fighting history together, so naturally they’re not going to be the gentlest of people with each other. They know how to punch, hit, and shove each other so that it doesn’t hurt since they train together. And while it is mostly annabeth that does it, Percy has never said it hurts or that he doesn’t like it. And last time I checked, he’s pretty good at calling people and gods out on their shit. If he had an issue with it he would say it.
An example of the abuse they are referring to is the judo flip. The context for this is that Percy went missing for months and Annabeth being overwhelmed, relieved, and just emotional decides to judo flip him upon reuniting with him. What a lot of people forget to mention is that right after, while he is being pinned down by Annabeth, he laughs. He laughs and they all move on. Judo flips, according to my research, are not supposed to hurt. They only hurt if they are done wrong. There is a chance my research is wrong so if anyone wants to correct me go ahead. But assuming it is right, the judo flip Annabeth did to Percy probably didn’t hurt nor was it meant to.
And Percy has experienced physical abuse before, and he hated the man that did it. He most likely would not get into a relationship with someone who does that. And he has called Annabeth out on things before, he had no trouble getting mad at her in botl, so if he seriously didn’t like it he would most likely say something.
Again, if you don’t want that in your relationship that’s great, YOU should set those boundaries with YOUR partner. But you can’t speak for a fictional character that clearly doesn’t have any issues with the way his partner treats him.
4. Annabeth makes jokes at the expense of Percy and makes him feel dumb.
There are some times when she does make jokes about Percy to his face, and he either laughs or doesn’t care. The books are from his pov, it’s not hard to see how it doesn’t bother him.
The nickname “Seaweed Brain” was her teasing him at first but it then became endearing for the both of them. This was the same for the nickname “Wise Girl”. Percy even likes the nickname and he has never said it makes him feel belittled or dumbed down.
I think where this stems from is people who think giving Annabeth credit is discrediting him. Someone mentions how she helped Percy with something and they will go on about how Percy isn't dumb and it's like we know he isn't dumb, no one said he is. Giving her credit isn’t taking credit away from him and many people need to hear that. Someone will mention how Annabeth will teach Percy something that he wouldn't have figured out on his own and oh my god people go feral. "Annabeth held up the sky" they translate that to Percy didn't do shit. Someone will say Annabeth is one of the smartest and they think that means they're saying Percy is stupid. Sorry that a girl being smart makes you insecure? Because that’s what I’m getting from that take. Percy is smart too but taking that away from Annabeth to give it to him isn’t exactly how that works. Life isn’t a competition, you don’t constantly have to be ranking people. There’s enough smartness for everyone. No one is taking anything away from Percy by admitting she is super smart or by giving her credit for stuff she did!!
You don’t hear people saying Annabeth can’t swim because Percy can control water, so why do people think people are saying Percy is dumb because Annabeth is incredibly smart? Annabeth knows she is smart, and she herself says Percy is smart TWICE, not that because she is smart that Percy is dumb. She is smart, and that takes nothing away from Percy and vice versa. They both think differently and do different things while in combat you just can’t compare those. Intelligence doesn’t just come in one form and admitting one is smart doesn’t make the other not smart. Say it with me, Annabeth is smart, Percy is smart, those things can both be true at the same time. Annabeth can be credited for things and that does not discredit Percy. For the people who say it makes Percy insecure that Annabeth shows her intelligence I promise you when Annabeth says something nerdy it doesn’t hurt Percy’s feelings.
It is true that Percy’s intelligence is overlooked, that is an issue. But you don’t have to bring someone else down to build him up okay there’s many great moments showing his intelligence use those instead. Also because if you have to bring someone else down to make your fav seem better you’re not doing your fav any favors it makes them look like someone needs to come down to their level and that’s not what’s happening with Percy. Don’t do him dirty like that he can be smart on his own you don’t have to mention Annabeth.
Sorry I kind of got off topic I just saw a chance to address an issue I’ve seen where people think giving Annabeth credit is taking away from Percy. This sometimes happens the other way around but it’s mostly the people who do this that hate her.
5. Annabeth defended Luke and it was inconsiderate of her since he tried to kill Percy.
She didn’t really defend him she just said there’s still good in him. And I mean this did make Percy mad. He was mad at her for even mentioning Luke because he was jealous, and because he didn’t understand how she could still think there’s good in him after all he did. And that’s valid. But that doesn’t mean it’s “a heartbreaking realization for a Percy that Annabeth chooses Luke over him” in the words of someone who used this argument, when she said there’s still good in him. Annabeth was betrayed by Luke too, and say what you want about her holding hope but it makes sense that she still sees good in him. I mean, that’s the guy who she views as a hero, who was a hero to her. And in the end her holding onto that hope is what broke Luke’s trance and he decided to stab himself. So if you found it annoying that she believed in him that makes sense, but don’t pretend you can’t understand why she did it.
6. Annabeth was a bitch to Rachel and is not a girls girl.
Honestly, was she nice to Rachel? No. Did Rachel deserve Annabeth’s comments? No. Is Annabeth valid? Yeah. I’m not justifying her behavior but I am justifying her reasoning because it is so obvious it went beyond jealousy.
Rachel not doing anything wrong and Annabeth being valid can co-exist. Seeing Annabeth’s perspective of this is so easy we just have to think about how the person she loves might pick someone normal over her since she can’t be normal. On his last summer too. This wasn’t just “jealous girl is mean to other girl” trope it was showing how deeply Annabeth cherishes Percy and how when she sees him picking someone else over her she is going to not be nice.
Should she have said those things to Rachel, um probably not. But she is a teenager also and it’s super normal for a teenager to get jealous and bratty when her crush and best friend spend time with a girl that also has a crush on him. It wasn’t Annabeth’s finest moment but it was entertaining and personally I thought it was funny. I swear a lot of people act as if she grabbed Rachel by her hair and smashed her against a wall but it was just some catty remarks. And a lot of people forget that Rachel and Annabeth are friends now, they like each other, they forgave each other.
And on her not being a girls girl? I think some people need to touch some grass because why should she have been a girls girl at that moment? Was she supposed to tell Rachel to go for it? I understand wanting her to just leave Rachel alone but after Rachel had to lead HER quest I’m not sure what they were expecting. She made up for it anyway when she saved Rachel from a helicopter despite still disliking her.
7. Annabeth got scared of Percy which made him feel like he deserved to die.
I’m pretty sure I’ve written about this before but I guess I’ll go over it again. Her boyfriend did something scary, that probably reminded her of Luke since they both went too far, so she got scared. God forbid scary things scare her.
And secondly, did Percy ever tell Annabeth he was having those thoughts? No. Stop blaming her for everything this time she is actually 110% innocent.
8. She is powerless and therefore she is useless.
She doesn’t have any unnatural powers but being crazy smart sounds pretty useful to me. Bonus points because she’s good at many kinds of combat too.
If they think they don’t need her fine, but they did in fact need her so we’re never gonna know the other possibility.
Even strength has to bow to wisdom sometimes.
This doesn’t mean the other demigods don’t have wisdom but like it’s Annabeth Chase wisdom is kind of her thing.
Anyways, I kind of got tired of writing this and I can’t think of anything else so I’m gonna end it here. I hope this doesn’t come off as hate to any other character, because it’s not, nor do I see how it could be but people will find a way so this is clarification. People can hate whatever character they want to hate but these reasons are not really much sense. And if they expect people to hate her for these reasons too even less sense. And people are allowed to hate her, but they love to talk about it so much it’s like an obsession.
And to those who told me to tag them I hope this wasn’t a waste of your time because I tried and it took me forever😅
