The young woman jumped where she sat, snapping her gaze over her shoulder to the old man who'd walked up behind her, "Really Grandpa?"

He huffed a laugh, carefully settling down to sit a few feet away with a huff and grunt, before smiling to his grand-daughter, "Yep. Old TV shows once said they'd stay standing decades after us; or that's what I recall."

"But they've been gone before I was born!"

"Aye, they have-" he chuckled when she scrunched her nose at his fake accent, "-I'm sure those theorists are rolling in their graves at being wrong. Those science types had really started to get full of themselves right before the fall."

"Didn't they see it?" she wondered, turning to look out over the overgrown rubble of the once-city.

"Oh they could." he huffed, "but I think some of them had been aiming to use it to rework things. Didn't work, humans can be animals sometimes; as you well know."

She hunched in on herself, remembering the raid a few weeks ago, before nodding.

"Don't yet know what it's like across the seas. Word is slow to travel, even with the CB grid being rebuilt. Could be it worked in Europe, they always did like their kings." he snorted, "But they might've fallen apart worse than us. They did like their modern world better than the past. Not that we did well, I know, but I think the fact so many of us were rural or wilds helped."

"Do you think we'll ever rebuild, grandpa?"

"Maybe, Jaina." he shrugged, then smiled, "You and your brother's generation have a good chance of laying the foundation. And if I remember history right, you may live to see cities again."

"I hope so," she sighed, "I'd like to see a skyscraper in person instead of old books."

"If the middle ages could rebuild from the ruins of Rome, and the Plague, then we can do it again." twisting to the side and pushing himself up with a grunt, he started to head back the way he come, "Humans like building as much as we do tearing down; just depends on who is in power."

As we gazed across the fields, he remarked: “I remember when this was all skyscrapers…”

There's something hilarious about how so much subsequent media has positioned Vampires and Werewolves as, like, binary opposite entities, and then you read Dracula (1897) and realize that wolves are that guy's preferred solution to every problem. You'd say something to Dracula about "ah yes, werewolves, vampires' great eternal enemies," and he'd just be like "you mean my subcontractors?"
