small doodle from a few days ago while reading the book
this is supposed to be the "wants to make out" "never kissed anyone before" meme but jekyde rules: it's not that jekyll hasn't kissed someone before he's just repressing the urge to make out--in turn making hyde Nasty and Gross

I still can't believe that this whole horrifying situation was just a way for Jekyll to have the upper hand over Lanyon regarding science.
At the point of no return of Hyde's visit to Lanyon, Hyde/Jekyll finally drops the pretense that he is someone else and delivers this little paragraph: "And now, you who have so long been bound to the most narrow and material views, you who have denied the virtue of transcendental medicine, you who have derided your superiors—behold!"
Lanyon and Jekyll fell apart because the latter, in the words of the former, ended up playing with "unscientific balderdash". Jekyll probably tried to convince Lanyon that becoming Hyde was possible (However I don't think he called him Hyde in the earlier days), and Lanyon in all of his right called him out for basically trying to do magic. At that note Jekyll decided and dedicated himself to prove Lanyon wrong, even if Lanyon wanted nothing to do with him.
Jekyll really revealed that he could transform his whole being into someone new, a blank paper at the eyes of the world, and he delivered that information with a game of hide and seek organized to make Lanyon's emotions rise to the point that he had a gun in his pocket. Hell I even feel that Jekyll somehow used Hyde's being for this petty power play, even if Hyde is Jekyll at the end. How cruel it is to use yourself like a pawn to get a back at your friend, it's weirdly disrespectful.
Jekyll's own arrogance over a simple scientific dispute ended with Lanyon dead, the letter read desperate to reach out for his old friend in a time of fright. Yet he indirectly killed his best friend because he needed to share his new experiment in the most petty way possible to finally prove to Hastie Lanyon that Henry Jekyll was the superior man of science.
