Random question, what’s your favourite species of bird? Or perhaps your favourite “kind” of bird?
OOH OOH I LOVE BEING ASKED ABOUT FAVOURITE THINGS LIKE BIRDS AND FLOWERS. /GEN
There are so many birds in the world, and I'd probably end up having tens of favourites if I went through all of them. So instead of doing that to myself, I just determine a set few I can recall quick because too many will end up forgetting.
I love magpies! I love crows and ravens, too, but felt like magpies don't get the same attention. They're protective of their territories, and really smart. And of course they're absolutely beautiful. They've been known to use tools, pass the mirror test, and other ways we humans determine intelligence and sentience in other animals. My persona's wings are based on Eurasian Magpies!
I also love pigeons. They were companions, carried our messages. A beautiful bird outshined by doves. As an autistic person, I never understood why I would lose friends, and felt like I was left behind and forgotten growing up. I'm trying to understand, now, but it's hard to let go of the pain. I felt like I was only remembered if they needed something (not material things, but like company or a laugh), or simply because they forgot I existed and showed up again. Maybe I had bad friends, or maybe we were just young and learning how to form relationships and maintain them. Either way, I felt like a pigeon, even if it wasn't the intent of these people. I find a comfort in them, and hope to have some as pets, one day, when I'm capable. It's also reassuring seeing how they're becoming loved once again, that people are being heard about the injustice we did to them. It's a slow process, one that has been going on for years, with little pockets of communities growing.
Those are the two types of birds I hold near and dear. I love other birds like canaries and seagulls, which I have reasons for them, too, but I've rambled enough. Djfjcng

Just saw something on Etsy: lunar raven and solar owl pins (x). And they look great, very aesthetic, but I can't lie it kinda feels weird that owls, most of which are nocturnal, are associated with the sun; whilst ravens, mostly diurnal, are associated with the moon???
Like I get that it's because dark-colour birds = dark at night and light-colour birds = light in the day but please consider: a solar raven and a lunar owl.
Lunar owl is kinda obvious not gonna lie - just look at this lil guy, he's perfect, his face is already round like the moon and he's fluffly!!!

Meanwhile crows are a lil bit harder to argue for bc of the whole Dark Knight vibes but bear with me. Y'kno in summer when you're just wandering around and then you see that the ground is shimmering? Right over the tarmac/asphalt, bc it's dark so it absorbs the most of the sun's heat? And then in winter, all the school kids lie on the tarmac bc it's still warm? And also raven feathers being really shiny when the sun hits them - kind of yellow when the sun is hot, and kind of blue when it's colder, just like the sun itself feels?

And I think ravens are like the dandelions of the bird kingdom, you know that thing about dandelions being unapologetically everywhere and invincible? Yeah, that's ravens, and also the sun, in a way, because unless you live in the Arctic or Antarctic circles, the sun is always gonna rise, every single day no matter the weather, no matter how warm or cold it is. And guess what? The ravens are probably gonna be out and about too!
(But goose, you say, what about pigeons, they're everywhere too? To which I say yeah, yeah they fucking are and I hate them. They are nettles and poison ivy and they warble their bastard drunken coo-coo-coo right in my ear at 5am on Sunday in the summer holiday no matter what fucking continent I'm in, and alongside seagulls, slugs and 13 year old boys they are my absolute least favourite creatures on God's Admittedly Kind Of Ok Earth.)
Anyway. I've kinda lost the plot there, but I'd love to see ravens associated with the sun a bit more rather than the night, y'kno?
(Also about that very optimistic post 4 hours ago, where I'm like guys! I'm gonna write something!! ... yeah. I got a little distracted.)
