“Not your type of party?” the stranger asked with a smile that caught Patrick complexly off-guard. Mostly because he was surprised the stranger had noticed him.

“Not really the party type,” Patrick answered with a hesitant smile of his own, but took the beer anyway – it seemed rude not to, and he didn’t want to seem uptight. “My friend dragged me here.”

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but it shows,” the stranger commented with a laugh, and had it been anyone else, Patrick might have felt offended. But the stranger’s laugh was so charming and endearing, without any trace of mocking, that Patrick found himself grinning, even as his cheeks warmed up a little. What was this guy – this cool guy – doing there, talking to him? Surely there were more interesting people at the party. “I’m Pete,” the stranger offered, his shoulder bumping Patrick’s playfully.

“Patrick.”
