I do appreciate the pigeon floof, though. Wait, how did pigeons get here? Did they import them? Are these actually not-pigeons but are more closely related to Thomases? Are... are they a type of WORM??!??!!

Oh, Vash. He wants to rest, but he's keeping one eye open.

NM, he's decided rest is the best option.

OMG, this page! Rem with the halo imagery over her. The way her form dominates the page but blends into Vash's, as if she's a bigger part of him than he himself is. The way he seems to be falling through the panels. Gorgeous.

There are few things in life that can't be made to seem at least a little better if one has ice cream.

Gods, I'm sure people have debated his designs in both '98 and Stampede, but here? Legato looks like a twink. A twink hiding in a big emo jacket with shoulder pads he stole from the '80s and then fed steroids.

Seriously, though. Of all the foods to import, you'd think someone would leave hot dogs behind. Or not. They do make use of the junk parts of the animal, and I guess you can't be too picky when you live in a desert wasteland.

The way they're having this conversation is suspicious.

I just want to point out that, when Milly says Vash's face looks frightening, this is the last expression we see him showing.

He's putting on the glasses. It's serious time. He might have to shoot someone, and he definitely doesn't want anyone else to catch a glimpse of his intentions here.

Wow. The level of force Vash shows in his wording here. It's like he's playing a card that says, "I know I'm superior to you, and given the situation, I'm going to make dead sure you know it, too."

"That monster," huh? Harsh words. Justified, perhaps. But harsh. All of this is harsh coming from such a staunch pacifist.

I just want to point out that all of this is happening after the July incident. For no reason whatsoever, I'm sure.

Legato... PLEASE don't make shitty decisions with your life. What you're suggesting is not the sort of thing likely to end in a win scenario for you....

Ok, so I'm sure some of this is because I've watched '98 and have a better feel for Legato than some... but I LOVE the imagery of him handing food to a hungry child and giving them a pat on the head. It's wrong on so many levels... but it's also a good reminder that people who are capable of absolutely terrible things are also capable of at least presenting a veneer of simple kindness.

Glad that scene upset Vash quite a bit, too.

Assuming Legato isn't bluffing, even Vash would struggle to contain that much slaughter in such a short span of time, I think. And right now, he's got a whole fountain in between him and Legato.

Vash has been gradually losing his mask through this whole conversation. Milly noticed it first, but the kids and Meryl have noticed it by now, too.

This outfit needs more straps.

I LOVE how they're all in silhouette behind Legato there, but with all their forms blended together to make this ominous amorphous blob of eyes and limbs and darkness. I want a clean version without the text balloons.

Ok, now I have legitimate questions about the Shoemaker instead of bullshit ones.

I, too, would panic if someone I knew suddenly literally lost their head. Not sure I'd go screaming into the town square, but I would definitely be out of sorts.

I wanted to go through more than one chapter, but I feel like I have a LOT of notes on this one, and those pop-out posts inevitably take a good chunk of time, so this will do for tonight.

I think it’s important to note that the artist you singled out, the current karma miniseries artist, is Vietnamese. So probably not willfully infantilizing xuân out of racism. I think that art style just has a lot of childishness in the character design. Both rogue and xuân look very “chibi” in that pic

In the vol 1 art she looks older than the other new mutants but not like. As close in age to ororo (~6 years older than her) as to Beto (~6 years younger) (assuming the 19 age is true)

And karma’s age has been scaled down over the years to make her closer in age to the other new mutants. She would have been older than rogue but there’s no way that’s the case anymore (and probably wasn’t the case in nm vol one after the early issues, why would adult karma have been on the junior team while 17-18 yo rogue was on the grown up team without a special exception like kitty? Who xuân went to college with?). All their ages got messed up a lot during the x force era, beto aged twice as fast as most of the other characters and rahne aged half as fast if we take their introduction ages as gospel (everyone hit the early twenties except rahne, who was still 16 instead of 18-19)

I don’t want to completely invalidate your point but it just kind of rubbed me the wrong way when you singled out the Vietnamese artist as being “worse” for karma than the original (white guy) which was messy in portraying poc and somewhat inconsistent at best

Oh, I'm absolutely not singling out the Vietnamese artist, and I'm definitely not saying that the original artwork for Karma wasn't problematic (although the original design looked fine to me), as there are definitely portrayals of her in her early appearances that look like racist depictions of E Asian/SE Asian woman. I just generally find it weird how she's been infantilised and de-aged in a general trend towards de-aging that's been going on for many years. To me this isn't necessarily an artist problem, it's an editorial problem, where we can't have Asian characters without fitting into some sort of trope or stereotype. Sure, Rogue looks chibi-fied in the latest issue, but she still looks like a grown woman compared to Xuan, who looks like a kid, even though they're probably about the same age.

I'm really not bothered by which team a character is in, no matter their age. Kitty and Rogue can be in the X-Men, Karma can be in the New Mutants. I think any character can be in any team regardless of age (unless it's weird and creepy). I don't necessarily mind characters aging slowly either, but regressing in age for no reason is kinda weird to me. At least Jubilee has kinda aged a little bit, but Karma's situation is ... odd to me. I may have missed out a chunk of her storyline that explains the retcon to de-age her (I haven't kept track of her for ages, tbh). And of course, this may all generally be a problem I have specifically, in which case, I apologise for offending anyone. I just feel strongly about it as a biracial E Asian woman who has grown up constantly being infantalised.

TL;DR: I'm not singling out the Vietnamese artist's work per se. The artwork is cute and I like it. I'm criticising editorial mandates that say it's okay to have a mature SE Asian woman look like a 12 year old compared to a mature Western woman sitting next to her, in a world where Asian women are often either depicted as exoticised femme fatales or kawaii lolita dolls.

Biosensors, Vol. 13, Pages 736: LSPR-Based Aptasensor for Rapid Urinary Detection of NT-proBNP

N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a myocardial stress biomarker that can be found in serum or plasma, saliva, and urine in the context of cardiovascular disease. In this study, we developed a rapid (~25 min) and straightforward localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-based assay for detecting NT-proBNP in urine. The assay employs citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and an #aptamer specific for NT-proBNP, which initially interacts with NT-proBNP. The remaining unbound #aptamer then interacts with the AuNPs, and the addition of NaCl induces the aggregation of the unprotected AuNPs, resulting in a decrease in absorbance at the LSPR band (A521) and an increase in absorbance at 750 nm (A750). The concentration of NT-proBNP showed a linear correlation with the aggregation ratio (A521/A750), and the assay demonstrated a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.303 µg·L−1 and a detection range of 0.566–8 µg·L−1. However, the presence of sulfur-containing proteins in saliva and fetal bovine serum hindered the detection of NT-proBNP in these biofluids. Nevertheless, the assay successfully detected NT-proBNP in diluted urine with an LOD of 0.417 µg·L−1 and a detection range of 0.589–6 µg·L−1. The observed values in urine samples from preterm infants with cardiovascular disease fell within this range, indicating the potential clinical relevance of the assay. The recovery percentages ranged from 92.3 to 116.3%. LOL, I have SO MANY THOUGHTS about what's going on in WW's head here, but they're all spoilers, so I'll keep them to myself.

I wish I could find a suitable picture to show just how much this building looks like the old Spanish missions dotting the landscape in certain parts of the Southwestern U.S., but it seems like 99.9999% of the pictures are of the buildings inside the walls... or of the ones that have been extensively renovated rather than having crumbly bits like so many of them do. (Also, it's late and so I can't be arsed to do a detailed search. Maybe this will help get my point across? IDK, I'm not writing an essay on Spanish missions right now. I already did that back in 4th grade.)

Some quick Spanish notes on page 134 here for those who may not hear these terms so frequently: Mi Amigo = my friend (may not actually indicate a friend; can also be used to create a mock-friendly tone in a situation where intimidation is coming into play) Jefe (pronounced "heh-fay") = slang term meaning "boss" or "leader" (can also be used sort of like "man" or "dude" in English, or in a mock-friendly tone to kinda rub in that the person being called "jefe" is not in charge of the situation) Comprende? = Do you understand?

Ok, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this. I love the absolute chaos of the top part taking over the whole page, with this guy's shouting bearing down on Vash and the family from the top, claws sweeping in from the left with a motion so fast and deadly it leaves motion lines going all the way up the page... and then, cutting in at the bottom, in a panel that's practically pure-white serenity, the soft but definite *click* of the Punisher's machine gun opening. Beautiful.

And, of course, we turn the page into a two-page spread of Wolfwood letting 'er rip, adding a more controlled and entirely different type of chaos to the scene.

LOL, BF's mad. Just a little, though. Confusion has tempered his anger.

Ok, this, though. How the angle goes from him carelessly tapping Vash on the head with his gun (while practicing shit trigger discipline, I might add) to us looking up at Wolfwood from a perspective very close to what Vash's would be if he could lift his head. How, in the second panel, Wolfwood looks like a desperate man about to pull an executioner's trigger out of fear and confusion for the unknown before him. How, even so, he's debating if Vash is actually the monster he's heard of when there's so much evidence that, despite superhuman skills that Wolfwood has witnessed multiple times firsthand, Vash seems so kind and cares so much for people he ends up in this situation even while half-dead.

Meanwhile, Vash seems to be taking well-deserved nap....

Summary / TIB for those who haven’t read this: This is a AU for Volume 4+ (because Vol 3 hurt me in ways that still do) which I started writing before the Volume 5 run, so some inconsistencies arise from that, but a whole not of NONE inconsistences as well, and I still can’t believe I wrote Oscar as well as I have with just Vol 5 knowledge (AKA he’s a little shit and he knows it and everyone pays the price). 

It features a fire threat of a first chapter that I can’t think of how to rewrite to make more sense so....give two chapters a go before you kick it to the curb? I dunno.  Also feat time travel via two Semblance-charged two maidens (thanks Nora) that send Oscar and Ruby to the PVP fight, and they change a whole bunch of stuff and realise half way through that huh, this changes stuff, and we have feels? This currently filters into a fic (book series) that is 225K words, so try not to attempt to read at 3AM if this sounds like the bees knees. Feat me bullshitting my way through a whole lot of stuff (that apparently makes sense) which is limited to, but also not limited to:  1.Time travel.  2.Salem.  3.How “Magic” works before magic was a thing in RWBY.  4.How Scroll’s work when there’s no damn signal.  5.Oscar “I’m a Little Shit” Pine.  6.Qrow “why the fuck can’t I be a bird Fulltime” Branwen. 7.Ruby “I never learnt tact and why do I have butterflies” Rose 8.Stars that totally don’t, but totally have no consequence on the future of this fic that may and may not include live birds and plushies.

Subaru: Ha, ¿que yo soy amable? Debe haber algo malo contigo. Yo no me preocupo por ti. El querer alejarme de ti y morir son cosas que hago por mi propio bien Subaru: Yo no soy amable, sólo estoy huyendo. Si permanezco a tu lado... eventualmente llegará el día en que te rompa.
