[🎶] When the sun goes down And the band won't play I'll always remember us this way When you look at me And the whole world fades I'll always remember us this way
(Continued from this post)
#this is just a spice to music vibes pipeline at this point#because why write captions when you can use song lyrics?#I think we’re here for the ~visual vibes~ anyway so y’all forgive me 😌#year: 1932#sims spice#sim spice#darlingtons after dark#Gio and Jo#Jo#Gio

Doctor X (1932)
"If you ask me, I think Dr. Xavier is using very unethical methods."
"Necessity has no ethics, sir."
#doctor x#1932#american cinema#pre code film#horror film#michael curtiz#robert tasker#earl baldwin#howard warren comstock#allen c. miller#lionel atwill#fay wray#lee tracy#preston foster#john wray#harry beresford#arthur edmund carewe#leila bennett#robert warwick#george rosener#willard robertson#solid good time pre code horror (and another off the Rocky Horror list; actually this could be the last i had to see?) (also contrary to#the lyrics of Science Fiction/Double Feature‚ at no point does the titular Dr build 'a creature') but yeah anywa#anyway*‚ this was one of a very few films made with a pioneering two tone technicolor process that was quickly abandoned in the face of#public apathy; once considered a lost film‚ that version was found in the 80s and is now happily available in a beautiful restoration and i#gotta say it looks absolutely phenomenal‚ full of deep‚ ominous greens and purples. the plot is some hokum about a string of murders#possibly involving the good Dr (an as always impeccable Atwill‚ at the beginning of his all too brief run as a star) and his rogues gallery#of weirdy scientific associates. it's par for the course for early horror cinema‚ complete with mildly exasperating comic foil hero (but by#far not the worst example of the type) and some rather risqué dialogue that absolutely wouldn't have got past the code a few years on#could have done with more focus on the horror and less on the funny business but so it goes and at least the laboratory stuff looks amazing

#yeah yeah I’m sure there was tons of hatred and prejudice behind the scenes#iirc Jesse Owens was segregated from fellow olympians in the 1934 Olympics#but I like looking on the bright side of things#women were included since 1900. I found clips of like the 1932 Olympics with women diving and playing badminton and doing archery#as previously stated black people competed for America since at least the 1930s#watching the opening of the 1964 Olympics and everyone’s happy to welcome new African countries in native clothing#and they’re excited to be competing in Asia for the first time (Tokyo Japan)#WWII was like 20 years ago yet the announcer happily celebrated Germany was here and not split into East and west#since all I really know about those time periods is racism and sexism I was surprised at how heartwarming it is#plus the usual “despite the countless cultural differences language barriers and conflicts everyone joins together to play games#which made me cry watching the 2024 Olympics opening live#the Olympics#olympic games

have you read 1948 by David Peitrusa (sp?)?
I have read all of David Pietrusza's books and have been a big fan of his work for a long time. In fact, his publisher even used me as a blurb on at least the paperback editions of a couple of his books.
I'm particularly fond of Pietrusza's 1920: The Year of the Six Presidents (BOOK | KINDLE). It's a really great read and I remember breezing through it when I got it. My second favorite of his books is 1960: LBJ vs. JFK vs. Nixon: The Epic Campaign That Forged Three Presidencies (BOOK | KINDLE).
Like I said, I am a longtime fan of Pietrusza's writing style. He's written many books on a variety of subjects, but you especially can't go wrong with any of these books about the Presidents and Presidential elections: •1932: The Rise of Hitler and FDR: Two Tales of Politics, Betrayal, and Unlikely Destiny (BOOK | KINDLE) •TR's Last War: Theodore Roosevelt, the Great War, and a Journey of Triumph and Tragedy (BOOK | KINDLE) •Roosevelt Sweeps Nation: FDR's 1936 Landslide and the Triumph of the Liberal Ideal (BOOK | KINDLE) •1948: Harry Truman's Improbable Victory and the Year That Transformed America (BOOK | KINDLE)

Here's a weird History Mystery from my research today: two guys, both named Clifford Bell, almost the same age, both murdered with a pistol shot in 1932 around a month apart! What a weird coincidence.
