The Life of a Student Athlete at DACC
Being a student athlete is a unique and challenging experience that requires much dedication and challenging work. On one hand, student athletes must maintain high academic standards to remain eligible to participate in their sport. This often requires long hours of studying and completing assignments, in addition to the time spent practicing and competing.
I am currently a student athlete at Danville Area community college, on a basketball scholarship. I can tell you a little about my experience so far. You are required to do more than the normal college student. Primarily, grades play a key factor in being a student athlete. You must maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average to be eligible to play.
Also, as a student athlete your actions off the court have a crucial impact on your outlook as well. Schools try to select good people to come to their schools and represent their school well. A lot of people would like to be in your position to have their tuition paid for, so all eyes are on you. This just includes things like being on time to class, being a good person, and participating in activities.
Additionally, student athletes are treated well. We sometimes receive food before games just to fill our bodies before we go onto the floor and give everything we got. We also get to travel to small cities and other colleges for free. School gear is a big incentive on the list. We receive sweatpants, shirts, hoodies, and even tennis shoes.
In contrast, being a student athlete is not just raining pros it also comes with its cons. The weight of having to show up on the court and the classroom can be challenging. You may have a day where you take 3 exams and have a big game all in one day. Or have a 6am workout, then have classes from 8am until 12pm, then practice from 2pm-4pm. This can be tough for an individual to maintain their mental health with all these agendas stacked on top of each other.
Moreover, if you’re a big family person, a student athlete can be challenging as well. You are expected to be on campus almost every day so if you don’t live relatively close you could be away from your family for quite some time. You're allowed to go home during holidays and breaks. Such as Christmas and summer break, although these breaks aren't too long because you have to return to campus eventually.
One of the biggest things a student athlete struggles with is time management. Our schedule is a lot more compacted than the average person's schedule. So, if you do not have everything in order and ready to go you can begin leaving and forgetting things that put you in jeopardy of being prepared.
Finally, student athletes sacrifice a lot. With most student athletes being young we have peers and family members that do things that may seem interesting or fun. But being a student athlete is exactly like having a job and your attendance will show how seriously you take it. With all these tough obstacles being a student athlete has an endless number of benefits if you can beat the odds.

Barton: 2023-24 NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball National Champions
HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KWCH) - The Barton Cougars were the team to beat in junior college basketball for nearly the entire 2023-24 season. The Cougars brought a 35-1 record into Saturday’s NJCAA Division I National Championship game with a trophy to bring back to Great Bend on their mind.
Their opponent, Triton College held an early first half lead before a three-point attack gave Barton a 23-21 advantage. Barton went on to the locker rooms with a 46-39 lead at halftime.
Down the stretch Triton again made Cougar fans sweat, closing the deficit down to single digits in the final minutes, but it was Barton that prevailed 88-73. After falling in their lone national championship appearance 25 years ago, Saturday marked Barton’s first national championship in program history.
“It’s special. We wanted to be the first team to bring home the trophy,” said Barton guard Ring Malith. “I’m happy we did it, we had a great season.”
“You saw it here today, there was a lot of people here,” said third year head coach Jeremy Coombs. “We started to see that in our home games a lot this year. The place was packed, it was a great environment for the guys to play in. We’re happy to bring it back to Great Bend but we’re really excited for our team just because they worked so hard for it.”
The one-seeded Cougars dominated their way through the national tournament in Hutchinson Sports Arena, defeating their tournament opponents by a combined 59 points in four matchups as they were determined for the outcome they saw Saturday.
“Since the preseason it was our goal,” Tournament MVP Lajae Jones said. “Win the conference, region, and the national championship.”

Rippling with Lobo Legend Coach Ray Birmingham
I was so excited that Coach Birmingham agreed to come on the podcast. I have been a big fan of his as he is a legend in college baseball. I just knew if we could have an opportunity to visit, he'd share some of the incredible wisdom he's acquired throughout his career and boy was a right. This episode is pure gold and is chalked full of great stories about motivating and leading that everyone can learn from.
Plus he is just one of the kindest and most thoughtful men I think I've ever met. Although I knew him through his social network presence, the conversation with him was so easy to have. He made me feel like he and I have been friends for years. He's a Rippler through and through.
Here's a bit more about Coach:
At UNM, Birmingham has the second-most wins in program history with 402 to his credit as the Lobo skipper, earning his 400th DI Career win on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021 versus Air Force. He also initiated and had led the ongoing development and execution of the $3.65 million expansion of Santa Ana Star Field as well as UNM’s first privately-funded building on campus – the R.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard Clubhouse that was completed in December of 2016.
For his overall career, Birmingham is in exclusive company having won over 1,000 games. Entering the 2021 season, Birmingham will have coached in parts of six decades dating back to the late 1970s. Birmingham is also the winningest coach in the state’s history as all 1,220 of his victories have come coaching for teams in his home state of New Mexico (College of the Southwest, New Mexico Junior College and UNM).
In 2015, Birmingham was inducted into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame and was also inducted into the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2011. He also currently serves on the College Baseball Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
Birmingham has also coached or spoken at numerous clinics throughout the United States and South America. He has been published in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Journal and worked professionally for the Cleveland Indians, Oakland A’s and Kansas City Royals.
In 2004, Birmingham led the NJCAA all-star team to four wins in five games over the Chinese All-Stars in Beijing, China. In 2007, Birmingham was selected as the head coach of the NJCAA all-star team when China returned to the United States to play the U.S. team. Birmingham also coached the NJCAA West All-Stars to a three-game sweep over the East All-Stars in the summer of 2009.
In the summer of 2014, Birmingham served as the hitting coach for USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team, which was made up of the top collegiate players from around the country. Team USA played games across North Carolina before traveling to the Netherlands to participate in Honkbal-Haarlem Baseball Week. The CNT won the international tournament by outscoring its opponents 34-6 over its final seven games. Birmingham helped guide Tennessee’s Christin Stewart to “Best Hitter” honors at the tournament and Albuquerque’s own Alex Bregman of LSU was named Honkbal Baseball Week MVP. Team USA concluded its summer with five games in Cuba, finishing with an overall record of 18-8-2.
In his 43rd year of coaching, Birmingham has been a part of 22 championships. All the college baseball programs Birmingham has coached have reached the top 25 in the national rankings at some point. Between University of the Southwest, New Mexico Junior College and New Mexico, 167 athletes have gone on to play professional baseball with 39 coming while the head coach at UNM. Additionally, under Birmingham at UNM, 40 athletes have earned All-America honors and 10 have been freshman All-Americans as well. Birmingham was also the coach of NMJC’s first basketball conference championship team – a team that was ranked No. 1 in the country.

Small College Basketball Tidbits
As we approach Christmas, I simply wanted to jot down some interesting observations and notes from the first several weeks of the season. In no particular order, here goes:
- Langston is a remarkable story. Last year, the Lions went 1-27. After the season, Coach Chris Wright was hired as the new Head Coach, after leading Talladega to the NAIA National Championship game. Langston overhauled the roster, and is now 13-0 on the season. Just incredible!
- After Emporia State knocked off #1 ranked Northwest Missouri State, the Hornets have now defeated NW MO State in three consecutive games. Last year - in a season when NW MO State won their record-setting 3rd consecutive NCAA Division II National Championship, Emporia State swept the Bearcats in two regular season games. Congratulations to Coach Craig Doty, who has won two NJCAA National Championships and an NAIA National Championship in his young career.
- Last season, Young Harris was 6-21. Thus far this season, the Mountain Lions are 10-0 thus far. Congratulations to Coach Jeremy Currier and the Young Harris team.
- The University of St. Joseph is an incredible story in NCAA Division III basketball. In only their fourth year as a basketball program - started by Coach Jim Calhoun - the Blue Jays are now the #1 ranked team in NCAA Division III basketball. Now led by Coach Glen Miller, St. Joseph is now 9-0. Coach Glen Miller has the unique distinction of leading two different NCAA Division III teams to the #1 ranking in Division III basketball (he also lead Connecticut College to the top spot during the 1988-89 season. Coach Miller has also been the Head Coach at two different Ivy League schools: Penn & Brown.
- Randolph-Macon, who won the 2022 NCAA Division III National Championship, has now won a remarkable 53 straight home games. Incredible!
