How to Shift the Body into the Parasympathetic Side of the Nervous System
Breathing out and holding out or pausing at the bottom of the breath amplifies the body's natural production of Nitric Oxide, a vasodilator that expands the porosity of our vascular system. During Covid, researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital found that Nitric Oxide improved respiratory permeability & bronchodilation. (They were not looking for the vasodilation effects but Iâm sure that must have been happening too.) I first learned about breath holding out from Rosealba Courtney DO Lac from Australia, who used it to test Eucapnic metabolic health, the O2/CO2 exchange rate in the lungs. This was a contributing factor to asthma and sleep apnea and restricted breathing exercises could be used to cure asthma. Then I encountered this again studying at the beginning level with Lois Laynee. She had adopted a practice of Breathing out while humming to increase Nitric Oxide and Vasodilation and used it to calm the nervous system. One of the key actions to making the shift was swallowing at the bottom of the breath before inhaling again.
Signs that the parasympathetic nervous system is coming back online in the body:
+Spontaneous swallowing. When we are in a state of shock, our mouth dries up, we donât produce saliva (neither are we producing digestive enzymes), and in order to swallow our food we need to drink something. Eating when in a state of stress, you canât digest your food.
+Intestinal gurgles and rumbles. Have you noticed that when a client begins to relax that their organs and intestines begin to gurgle? As the parasympathetic wakes up, the viscera wake up.
+Yawning. Did you know you can make yourself yawn simply by rubbing your jaw muscles vigorously with your fingers and opening your mouth wide anticipating/expecting to yawn. Fake it til you make it.
Putting these two things together has enabled me to work effectively with shifting people out of long Covid symptoms. It has become my conviction that breathing dis-regulation is the metabolic habit that locks our nervous system into the Sympathetic side of the CNS where natural healing and self regeneration cannot happen due to the âemergencyâ metabolism associated with the fight for survival.

Natural herbs for erection
Natural herbs for erection
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition that affects men of all ages. It is characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. There are many causes of ED, including stress, anxiety, depression, and medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.
There are a number of natural herbs that have been shown to be effective in treating ED. These herbs work by increasing blood flow to the penis, which is essential for an erection. Some of the most effective natural herbs for ED include:
Ginseng
Damiana
Maca
Saw palmetto
L-arginine
Muira puama
Ginseng is a traditional Chinese herb that has been used for centuries to improve sexual function. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis and by enhancing the production of testosterone.
Damiana is a shrub that is native to Mexico and Central America. It has been used for centuries as an aphrodisiac. Damiana works by increasing blood flow to the penis and by enhancing the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is involved in sexual pleasure.
Maca is a root vegetable that is native to Peru. It has been used for centuries as a tonic for sexual function. Maca works by increasing testosterone levels and by enhancing the production of nitric oxide, a gas that helps to relax blood vessels and improve blood flow.
Saw palmetto is a small palm tree that is native to North America. It has been used for centuries to treat prostate problems. Saw palmetto works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can damage the prostate gland. DHT can also contribute to ED by reducing the production of nitric oxide.
L-arginine is an amino acid that is essential for the production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps to relax blood vessels and improve blood flow. L-arginine can be taken as a supplement or it can be found in foods such as nuts, seeds, and legumes.
Muira puama is a tree that is native to the Amazon rainforest. It has been used for centuries as an aphrodisiac. Muira puama works by increasing blood flow to the penis and by enhancing the production of dopamine.
It is important to note that natural herbs are not a cure for ED. They can be helpful in improving erectile function, but they may not be effective for everyone. If you are experiencing ED, it is important to talk to your doctor. Your doctor can help you to determine the cause of your ED and recommend the best course of treatment.
Here are some tips for using natural herbs for ED:
Start with a small dose and gradually increase it as needed.
Take the herbs for at least 4-6 weeks to see results.
Talk to your doctor before taking any natural herbs, especially if you are taking any medications.
Here are some other things you can do to improve erectile function:
Get regular exercise.
Eat a healthy diet.
Manage stress.
Quit smoking.
Reduce alcohol intake.

Legislate or Die?
We Can Save The Planet (For Ourselves!)
Companies are making an increasing number and range of âenvironmentally-friendlyâ and âhealthyâ products, such as bleaches and detergents or unadulterated foods. These products are invariably more expensive (and can only be bought by the better-off), and they are also the âacceptableâ face of corporations who continue to make the same old junk in large quantities to sell to the poor or dump in poor countries. Big firms such as Shell spend millions on advertising and PR, letting us know how âgreenâ they are â reclaiming the land after theyâve used it, putting their pipelines underground and giving money to green projects â yet they continue (with their government partners) to be the environmental terrorists. Consumerism (alienated buying to be happy) is part of the problem. Capitalism wants us to spend all of our âfreeâ time (when weâre not working to live or busy with domestic drudgery) buying âleisureâ.
A significant part of the environmental movement remains wedded to the idea that capitalism can provide technological âfixesâ to the megacide it has created. Although green products are preferable, they are not the answer. Theyâre an individual solution to a social problem: who controls what, is produced and how. As individuals the majority of us â the working class â have no control over our lives. We certainly donât have a say or exercise any social control over what we do or donât buy (or as dissident shareholders).
A prime example is that of green car technology. It took years â thanks to the strength of the roads lobby â to win the introduction of lead-free petrol. But cars remain massive polluters, so what was achieved? Traffic fumes are a major contributor to the greenhouse gases that produce global warming. Cars and light vans produce 18% of global carbon dioxide emissions (with more produced by their manufacture), nitrous oxide (which contributes to surface and tropospheric ozone), and carbon monoxide. A proportion of nitrogen oxides turn to nitric acid, falling as acid rain. They react with other chemicals in sunlight to form petrochemical smogs that destroy millions of dollars worth of crops in America and elsewhere. Catalytic converters are supposed to reduce emissions of these dangerous pollutants. They donât work when cold however, making them redundant at the start of the journey when most pollutants are emitted. They are widely used in Los Angeles, one of the smog capitals of the world. Similarly, there are problems with alternative fuels. Liquid hydrogen needs electricity to freeze it, and storage and safety are problematic. Like electric vehicles, it needs an expensive fuel that usually produces carbon dioxide in its generation. Super âtechnical fixesâ such as hydrogen fuel cells are very expensive and distant prospects. If and when they are introduced they will displace existing car technologies to the developing world, as has happened with tobacco smoking. Even if a genuine green car is developed, the many other adverse effects of cars will remain, such as the waste of space and resources, widespread injury and death, and the effects on street life and community.

Did you know that consuming a small amount of dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa) daily can help improve blood flow and lower blood pressure in people with mild hypertension?
Here's why:
Flavonoids: Dark chocolate contains flavonoids, which are a type of antioxidant that can help improve blood vessel function and reduce blood pressure.
Nitric Oxide: Dark chocolate contains nitric oxide, which helps to relax blood vessels and improve blood flow.
Vasodilation: The flavonoids and nitric oxide in dark chocolate can help to dilate blood vessels, which can improve blood flow and reduce blood pressure.
Lower Blood Pressure: Studies have shown that consuming a small amount of dark chocolate daily can help lower blood pressure in people with mild hypertension.
Improved Cardiovascular Health: The antioxidants and flavonoids in dark chocolate may also help to improve cardiovascular health by reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular conditions.
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors that increase the probability that someone will develop heart disease or diabetes. It is sometimes referred to as Syndrome X. Generally it includes high blood pressure, excess weight around the middle or central obesity (usually described as an apple-shaped body), and insulin resistance or the inability of the body to use insulin effectively. In a study published in the British Medical Journal, Australian researchers concluded that daily consumption of dark chocolate can reduce cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes, in people with metabolic syndrome.
Other facts:
The darker the chocolate, the more antioxidants it contains.
Dark chocolate is considered a "functional food" because it has potential health benefits beyond just providing nutrients.
Cocoa is a natural mood booster due to the presence of phenylethylamine, a compound that is similar to the neurotransmitter serotonin.
The researchers emphasized that these protective effects have only been shown for dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa), rather than for milk or white chocolate, probably due to the higher levels of flavonoids found in dark chocolate. They also suggested that milk proteins in lighter chocolate may inhibit the absorption of flavonoids.

Submitted via Google Form: Tropical Climate
Hi, I'm trying to build a world in a tropical climate that is always between 30-40 degrees year round. But I've never actually lived in such an area, although I've visited. It is crazy hot for me and even worse, there was barely any air con. I absolutely sweltered. Is it some kind of microevolution that allows people to live there just like people living in the Himalayas? But tropical climates are quite wide spread and aren't a niche like the Himalayas? Or maybe it's just me. Of course I know that there was no air con over 100 years ago, but global warming certainly warmed things up recently. I don't know but I always hear of people adapting to very cold weather, but nothing about the heat?
Feral: I donât know that thereâs really any microevolution involved, as that would imply a genetic, heritable change. 40C is pretty hot to be sure, but 30-35C is still within the range of normal for human habitation. That is, afterall, below the average human body temperature. Sweat will be the main physiological source of thermoregulation, so humidity will play a factor: the lower the relative humidity, the higher temperatures a human can withstand. There is definitely acclimation at play with hot temperatures, just like thereâs acclimation with colder temperatures. Generally, if you are in an area of the world where AC is typical, you are acclimated to a temperature lower than what would be expected for that same area 100+ years ago (not accounting for climate change).Â
I think a lot of adapting to hot weather is about adapting habits for regulating your body temperature, like water intake, clothing, and sunscreen. If youâre like a lot of people from temperate climates when traveling to hotter climates, you probably donât drink enough water. You likely also dress mainly in synthetic fibers or cotton, which are not ideal. Linen, hemp, and wool are all hydrophobic fibers, which means they donât absorb water, like sweat and the humidity from the air outside, allowing evaporation off the skin for natural cooling. Believe it or not, sunscreen doesnât just help to prevent skin cancer; it also helps regulate your temperature while youâre wearing it by preventing the depletion of nitric oxide in your skin from UV exposure. People living in hot climates are also likely to have waking/sleeping habits that coincide with keeping out of the sun and not doing labor during the hottest parts of the day, for example, the Spanish siesta. Consider the natural food options people in hotter or tropical climates will have access to; youâll notice that itâs not a lot of starchy root vegetables, which is fine because people there donât need the extra carbs for the body to process for warmth.
But, of course, individual humans are going to have individual reactions. Iâm from the American South, where itâs hot and humid. Iâll go outside in sweatpants in 32C weather, but that is not considered normal here. Nor is it normal in American Northeast, where my cousin grew up, for people to be outside in several inches of snow and still wearing flip flops, and yet my cousin does just that. We understand some factors as to why this is, but not all reasons are completely clear.
When dealing with tropical climates in particular where the humidity is much higher, the wind is a very important consideration for comfort. Thatâs why when we think of tropical climates, weâre often thinking of beaches, even though thatâs not a requirement for climate. Human habitation is more likely to spring up around bodies of water that encourage breezes.
Something to consider is your climate. Do you have a wet and dry season? A monsoon? Or is rainfall steady through the year? If it rains at dusk like clockwork every day, people will adjust for that. If there's a dry season then water storage will be a big deal. If it rains constantly then that will leach nutrients from the soil, making agriculture more difficult - there's a reason the most agriculturally productive places in the tropics are volcanic or where rivers deposit silt, most rainforest soils are extremely poor. If there's a strong dry season and a strong wet season, or a monsoon, flooding is likely to be a problem.*
Speaking of, adapting our surroundings via the built environment is a major way humans stay cool. Iâm not sure where youâre from, but youâve probably noticed at least some the homogenization and globalization of architecture. I think of the American Suburban Home as the quintessential example of this. The ubiquity across a country with 9 climate zones (in the contiguous states) would simply not be possible without central air & heating and the precursors of the 20th century.Â
Buildings used to be adaptations to the specific variables of the plot of land they were being constructed on. This is a factor in vernacular architecture. There are a few features common throughout much of the world based on climate factors.
Height: buildings where it is very hot are traditionally taller. There are a few ways this might manifest: steep rooflines, stilts which promote under floor board breezes (also important where itâs likely to flood), or sometimes narrow, even tower-like, structures. This helps to take advantage of the stack, or chimney, effect, which naturally ventilates the structure.
Width &/or Depth: buildings were it is very hot are traditionally skinnier in at least one of these dimensions, depending on the orientation of the lot. This allows for strong cross-breezes, as all windows, doors, and other ventilation points can be easily and uniformly placed across from one another.Â
Integrated Exterior Shade: lanais, verandas, piazzas (of the Charleston variety), porches, and interior courtyards (like those found in riads) all help provide shade at those aforementioned ventilation points so the air coming through is cooled, not to mention preventing direct sunlight from heating the interior. They can also provide space for additional important functions like sleeping porches.Â
Material: There are a lot of materials that are traditionally used based on the specific climate types (and therefore availability) to control the thermal mass; youâll just need to pay attention to the thermal properties, like conductivity and diffusivity. Adobe, earth shelter, and logs will be found in hotter climates. And of course, the color of those materials will impact the heat absorption. Itâs generally understood that white will reflect more light and therefore more heat than black, which will absorb it all and pass it into the interiors.Â
For more modern construction, check out this brochure from the National (USA) Renewable Energy Laboratory.
*Thanks to Utuabzu for this paragraph.
Licorice: I used to live in a VERY HOT country in North Africa that was 30-40 for much of the year. For the local people, this was normal; they did not seem at all bothered by this heat and very few of the houses had air conditioning. When the temperature dropped below 25 they started putting on their winter coats and wooly jumpers. If you grow up in that climate and youâre used to it, itâs comfortable for you.Â
NB This was a desert climate - hot and dry - rather than a hot and wet tropical country. But Iâm sure the same principle applies: if itâs what youâre used to, itâs comfortable for you.Â

In addition to eating a healthful diet, regularly exercising or getting enough physical activity may help a person to maintain a moderate weight and reduce their risk of heart problems. Taking part in cardiovascular exercise, otherwise known as cardio, on a regular basis may also help strengthen the heart and reduce plaque. Simple cardio activities that raise the heart rate include: jogging. cycling. running. brisk walking. swimming. playing tennis. doing aerobics. It is best for a person to aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and two days of strength training per week.

Restoration of normal blood flow in atherosclerotic arteries ... - NCBI
Blood flow is a key regulator of atherosclerosis. Disturbed blood flow promotes atherosclerotic plaque development, whereas normal blood flow protects against plaque development. We hypothesized that normal blood flow is also therapeutic, if it were able to be restored within atherosclerotic arteries. Apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoEâ/â) mice were initially instrumented with a blood flow-modifying cuff to induce plaque development and then five weeks later the cuff was removed to allow restoration of normal blood flow.
NYU Langone Health
Lifestyle Changes for Lower Extremity Arterial Disease
Exercising Regularly. Regular exercise improves the health of your arteries in several ways. First, it lowers bad cholesterol and boosts good cholesterol, which can reduce plaque buildup in arteries. It also increases the production of nitric oxide, a molecule that helps dilate the arteries and improve blood pressure in the cells that line the arteries, enhancing circulation. Exercise helps control the symptoms of diabetes, high blood pressure, and even stress, which can worsen high blood pressureâone of the leading causes, along with plaque buildup, of lower extremity arterial disease.
Some other ways to improve circulation include:
Cardiovascular exercise
Activities like jogging, cycling, running, brisk walking, swimming, playing tennis, and aerobics can help raise your heart rate and improve circulation.
Stretching
Stretching before and after exercise can help boost circulation.
Hydration
Drinking enough water throughout the day can increase oxygen levels in your blood, which can lead to better circulation. Experts recommend drinking 8â12 glasses of water per day.
