What a difference 56 years makes juxtaposition of Nissan Skyline GT-R, 1969 and Nissan GT-R, 2025. The latest version of Nissan's R35 series GT-R has been revealed for the Japanese market. Changes are minimal and include high precision weight-balanced piston rings, connecting rods and crankshafts and a new interior color, Blue Heaven. This could be the final iteration of the R35 series that debuted in 2007.

Prince Skyline Sport Coupe by Michelotti. (1 of 60).
The Prince Skyline was a car with humble beginnings that would slowly evolve into one of the most famous Japanese sports cars in the world – the Nissan Skyline and the almost universally loved Nissan GT-R.
The Skyline model range started in 1957 as a modest four-door sedan with a 1,482cc 4-cylinder engine producing 60 hp, and capable of a top speed of 87 mph. Nissan and Prince would merge in the 1960s, the Skyline was one of the Prince cars that survived – eventually becoming a major member of the Nissan stable.
One of the most famous early Skylines is the car you see here, the Skyline Sport Coupe by Michelotti. It was the work of Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti who was hired to pen the eye-catching bodywork, using the Prince Gloria as the base platform. The Gloria was the slightly larger sibling to the Skyline, with a 1.9 litre engine that offered a little more power, and a slightly larger overall footprint allowing more room inside the cabin. Michelotti used this larger platform to his advantage, creating both a luxurious coupe and a convertible, with ample interior space, canted headlights, and remarkably good visibility from inside the car thanks to the narrow pillars. The unusual headlights weren’t actually that unusual at the time, they’d been used by cars built by automakers like Chrysler, Bentley, and Ferrari. Michelotti would go on to use a somewhat similar headlights design again on the Triumph Vitesse in 1962.The early 1960s were a time of rapid change in the automotive world, with many car makers competing to create and establish new design language for the new decade. It was a forward-thinking move by Prince to hire Michelotti at the beginning of the decade to design them a new body, at the same time giving the brand the significant image boost that comes with the hiring of a well-known Italian designer.
Under the hood, the Prince Skyline Sport Coupe used the same 91 hp 1.9 litre engine as the Gloria, so performance was sedate rather than aggressive. The transmission is a 4-speed manual column-shift, and power is sent back to a live axle rear end. Over the course of the model’s very limited production run, only approximately 60 examples of Michelotti’s Skyline were built. Despite their relative rarity, they were a common sight in Toho films of the early 1960s – largely because Prince had a very proactive (and very successful) PR team who were adept at getting their cars used in films.

Nissan Hyper Force Concept, 2023. The most extreme of Nissan's Japan Mobility Show concepts borrows its DNA from the GT-R but applied it to an electric hypercar that produces 1000kw from a solid state battery. It has all wheels drive and active aero along with 2 driving modes GT for touring and R for racing.

The GT-R is a very cool car, by the way.
The Nissan Skyline GT-R has historically represented the pinnacle of Japanese sportscars, both in technological advancements and overall automotive capabilities. Hell, it earned the nickname "Godzilla" for how hard it dominated on track. We're talking "ending multiple racing series" domination (seriously, go have a read at its "Motorsport" section on Wikipedia, it is hilarious; it looks like a Chuck Norris meme).
Nowadays, the "R34" generation, the last Skyline GT-R, is probably the most famous and desirable Japan-only car ever (thanks in no small part to its lead role in 2 Fast 2 Furious, which in a true "DeLorean v. fridge¹" moment was going to be played by the Dodge Neon SRT4, which was a cool car, but you know...)
¹In case you didn't know, Back To The Future's time machine was going to be a fridge, but, since old fridges couldn't be opened from the inside, kids could've gotten trapped in emulation, so they instead used a DeLorean, significantly harder for kids to access due to poor sales, themselves due to the thing being pretty slow - so slow they had to import European gauge clusters for the 88mph thing because the US tach maxed out at 85 (which makes one wonder why they didn't just change the script to- wait how did the conversation derail like this? I swear this never happens. We were saying? Ah, right. The R34. Final Skyline GT-R. Ceased production in 2002 and that was that.
But then, a solid decade after the R34 left us, the Nissan GT-R dropped. Now a model unto itself, it no longer had to contend with the limitations that came with starting from a 'regular' car. And boy, did they have some fun and a half.
Like, this was some serious shit. Like "tires filled with nitrogen for more consistent pressures" serious. Its tech and engineering weren't just incredible in their own right, they added up to a car that indelibly cemented the GT-R name's reputation for slaying supercars. To properly communicate the level of not fucking around we're dealing with here: the video projected at its unveil was its lap at the Nürburgring [essentially, circuit racing's final boss, a grueling 23km/14mi hell where every sportscar is tested] that beat the production car record. With a damp track. I remember at the time, how spectacular it was to see Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche laptimes all get decimated by a car the fraction of the price with backseats and an actual trunk by the same brand that was making...
...this.
Yeah, this is not going to slay any supercar roster, is it.
Is it?
As you can imagine, that is no ordinary Nissan Juke. Well, however ordinary a Nissan Juke can ever be considered. No, that is the Nissan Juke-R. In short:
Yes, it's a Nissan Juke with the 600hp GT-R engine. And all the GT-R's tech. And the GT-R's All Wheel Drive system. And, well, most of the chassis of a Nissan GT-R. Which meant that you were seated far enough back to have the door pillars beside you, just as low as you did in the GT-R, and with nothing but a huge rollcage behind you, so the car was less comfortable, spacious and practical than the GT-R itself...
...and thanks to a much shorter wheelbase [distance between the wheels, for the unaware], much less stable than it too...
...and all this for worse performance due to the aerodynamic equivalent of a dog eating homework. All for five times as much money as Juke and GT-R commended combined.
Who approved this?
Yeah, checks out.
hmmm
#yes that last gimmick blog is me lmao#this whole explanation was half an excuse to reblog that chain because i find it very funny#nissan skyline GT-R#dodge neon SRT-4#delorean DMC-12#nissan GT-R#nissan juke-R

Rare Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign for sale in Canada
An ultra-rare Nissan GT-R50 has been listed for sale at Legendary Motor Company in Ontario, Canada. The dealer hasn’t disclosed the price, but we suspect it will be a lot higher than its original MSRP of $1.1 million. The first production Nissan GT-R50 rolled out back in 2020. Designed by Italdesign, only 19 examples of this limited edition GT-R were produced. This particular car is #11 and is…
