Hi all! My final project for college was this labor of love I spent about a year on. It's inspired by The Ninth Hour (https://www.ninthhourmusical.com/) which is criminally underrated.

Basically, it's a four minute long animated storyboard following Grendel post his final fight with Beowulf. I put a lot of work into it, and so please enjoy!

I definitely never saw myself making Beowulf art but I’ve been listening to a musical based on it and I’m very obsessed, so here we are. I actually got to see Shayfer sing one of the songs live and after that I was done for lol I’ve listened to the whole album a million times.

It has a lot of great symbolism that was a lot of fun to work from! There were a loooot of thumbnail sketches as I tried to figure out what I wanted to focus on — I might actually finish one of the ones I scrapped and make it a Beowulf-only poster design.

first of all- literally never worry abt/apologize for taking a while to respond. gods know that finals are kicking my ass rn lmao, I don't have much spare time either

secondly, I'm really glad you like the Grendel stuff! That being said- do not watch the Beowulf shows. at least not to start. they suck. like, REALLY suck. honestly im still blown away by the fact that Supernatural managed to do better justice to this story & its historical context COMPLETELY UNINTENTIONALLY, than every single screen adaptation of Beowulf put together.

if you would like ACTUAL good Beowulf media, I can recommend a few (btw in case its not obvious, I am a medieval studies minor in college, double minor w theatre, archeology major. so I really am Just Like This(tm) professionally).

in terms of spn-adjacent stuff/ angst-beyond-comprehension, The Ninth Hour Musical (on youtube or spotify) is FAR AND AWAY my first rec. probably 60-90 minute listen. also, the actresses who play Grendel's Mother and Beowulf sound very similar to each other, which adds a whole new level of ~Thematic Implications~ if you're just listening to the audio (there is a full performance on YT somewhere, and it is lovely and worth watching)

I personally often listen to this musical start-to-finish and imagine it as one big spn musical spanning s1- postcanon/the winchesters. you'll see why once you get towards the end

also seriously this musical is really really sad. Chuck wishes he wrote The Ninth Hour (....ok he kinda did bc of God's role in Beowulf but stillll)

OH. EDIT:

if you want even WORSE brain rot, look up the meanings of "Sam" and "Dean" in old english, the language in which Beowulf was originally told/eventually written. I'd reccomend Bosworth-Toller's anglo-saxon online dictionary. btw yes, there are WAY too many very-slightly-different spellings of these two names/words, but most of them mean the same two or three things. also Bosworth-Toller is a really fun resource to just fuck around in.
