(original ebay listing located here)
I just think this is super neat! By a weird confluence of my recent ebay search history, this listing is the very first thing I saw in the "You may be interested in" feed and, boy howdy, let me tell you! I SURE WAS INTERESTED!
Apparently, in the late 90s, Nintendo and Singer partnered to release this cool little embroidery sewing machine called the Izek. You could use the Game Boy Color to command the Izek to create embroidery patterns that came with the Game Pak or you could create your own!
I was poor, so I never had a Game Boy nor a Game Boy Color, but the only first-party peripherals I really remember for them were the terrible camera, the terrible printer and maybe the card reader (though that might have been for the Game Boy Advanced, idk - I didn't have that one either).
I love that the Izek existed, though. I love that Nintendo has historically had some just batshit, barely-functional peripherals (See: Power Pad, Power Glove, Super Scope 6, DK Bongos, etc).
If you leave a playing card company alone for over a century, it will create its own enrichment. I just love that.
#nintendo#sewing#game boy color#game boy#nintendo peripherals#embroidery#None of this is even to mention their time as proprieters of a string of Love Hotels in Japan

#kirby#daily kirby#my art#digital#hal laboratory#nintendo#waddle dee#(sort of)#one of my christmas presents was my wife's old desktop computer that she'd beefed up for video games#a while ago granted but still#so I did some more work on getting it set up today and then spent 5 hours playing house flipper :)#big kid computer means I can actually play pc games again#beyond full perfecting cook serve delicious on low graphics lol#also I knew my brother had given me a yakuza game a while ago that I hadn't opened because I was still on my laptop#but it turns out he gave me two yakuza games#so once I get the controller set up I can play yakuza 2 also!#I really enjoyed yakuza 1 except for a couple bs sections in the story and the very very last side mission.#(having a more powerful computer also means once I get the peripherals squared away I can start video captioning)#(and maybe hopefully stream occasionally)#(I really wanna stream my partner playing ace attorney because I want to have his reactions on record for myself lol)#(he loves puzzles and he grew up in the moon logic video game days and he has some background in criminology)#(so either he'll get super into it or he'll absolutely hate it I think lol)#(I've done a very good job of not spoiling anything)#(I know the court segments well but I might keep a guide on the side for the investigation segments)#(I never had that much trouble with them tho cuz I tend to be thorough and methodical)

they took all the whimsy out of her :(
#nevermind me just anthropomorphizing mass consumption items at 2AM for fun. look at what they did to her primary color drip#replaced with? what? the tattered remains of Gamer Black and RGB peripheral hand-me-downs? and to think Nintendo used to stand for somethin#truly dark times ahead. not as dark as that finish of course but it's getting there#text#okay quick addendum literally this entire post is a joke. of course they'll skin this up the wazoo for extra clams. I merely jest#i would never earnestly accuse a century-old corporation of creative bankruptcy I just don't got that dog in me

I woke up wondering if I could use my Taiko no Tatsujin drum game peripheral as a MIDI controller for recording actual taiko drum sounds
Turns out, I can!! 🪘🥁💥
FFS I've just realised the full video didn't upload. Rest is on YouTube if you want more.
youtube
It's absolutely wild tbh, and now I'm wondering what other game controllers I can do cool MIDI stuff with
Btw if you like the music in this, it's on my new album, Home for Hitodama - I'd love you to check it out

i wonder if nintendo actually have a business plan for the switch 2 or if they're really just flying by the seat of their pants with "save up a few years of switch releases and hope it's enough to push a tantalizing enough first year lineup for a hardware refresh"
#i swear steam deck sent them into crisis mode and forced the system back 2 years just not to be obsolete on arrival#pray for a dual screen but every instinct says we're finally arriving at the Nintendo Iris with no Yamauchi left to stop it#iris - the terminus of innovation#the only hope is valve pressures them back into competing with interface innovation over raw power#but do they have engineers left who can do it? surely they have the labo guys around still#if they arent careful psp 3 (vita 2🤍) will eat them up even faster than the deck#i feel like an iris switch can only end in xbox-like malaise unless they go wild on peripherals to salvage it#switch is already there and has been there for years. we had like dread and then everything else has been sold on visual novelty#ever since deck rendered the platform fundamentally obsolete theyve been coasting on the default purchase mindset of their consumer base#and illusions of exclusivity in the face of cheap and superior same-gen emulation#innovation is the cure#but min-risk min-cost will say just patch up the walled garden by brute forcing emulation difficulty and rely on exclusivity sony style#ironically unemulatable interface formfactor is even cheaper than raw power & has the bonus of novelty and attracting prospective pioneers#[i wrote this like 2 weeks ago - reminded to let it out of drafts now]

The west got the Zapper, but Japan got the Old West-style “Gun” light gun peripheral by Nintendo for the Famicom. A set came with Nintendo’s Old West light gun game “Wild Gunman” and a holster.

i love arcade rhythm game players the second a specialized peripheral controller is within 2 metres of their person that thing is getting MODDED within SECONDS. none of those switches are staying original. dear god theyve got a soldering iron
#its awesome. they do so many things to overpriced nintendo peripherals and shit its wonderful#they make these hunks of plastic as functional as they should have been out of the box#someday. if i ever feel like plaguing every person in my household endlessly. i will buy myself a taiko drum controller. someday#and i too. will put wood or something in that thang
