The Elements - Overview

This is a much more in-depth respond to @maakujiten's question on my this post. That being said this canon to both my FSM lives au and my Wu and Garmadon ToE au.

Also, I'm excluding the Source Dragons in this explanation because I don't know enough about them yet. I may or may not rework this explanation when we find out more depending on how much I care.

Essences:

Balance - The First Spinjitzu Master's essence. It is the balance and very fabric of the Sixteen Realms. He is the incarnation of it and the only being to truly possess it - though his children can manipulate it to an extent. If another dragoni child was born that wasn't his descendent, they would not possess it.

I've been associating the element with dark red, partly because red is green's complementary colour, partly because I read a fic that mentioned Lloyd got his red eyes from his grandfather, and partly because I like red and think it's cool. But you can imagine whatever.

Destruction - A primordial essence that has been around since the beginning. While all Oni are destruction made living and can use it, the only ones who specialise in it's essence are Garmadon and the First Oni, both of whom are stronger in this specific essence than the First Spinjitzu Master.

Creation - A primordial essence that has been around since the beginning. While all First Realm Dragons are creation made living and can use it, the only ones who specialise in it are Wu and Firstbourne, both of whom are stronger in this specific essence than the First Spinjitzu Master.

Energy - Lloyd's essence. It's derived from the essence of balance. While Lloyd and his Grandfather can both use it, Lloyd is the one who specialises in it, and is stronger than him for in this element in particular

Darkness/imbalance - Ninjago Wiki calls the Overlord's essence Darkness, and this made sense when it was introduced back in season 2 as an opponent to the First Spinjitzu Master's light and creation. However, since then, FSM has shown to more likely be balance than light, so the Overlord's essence is now imbalance; the absence of balance. The Overlord doesn't actually balance out FSM (they balance out themself) but just kind of exists independently.

Elements of Creation:

These are the elements that are derived purely from creation - i.e. if you combined them you would get pure creation. Dragons that possess these cannot have another element as they are too powerful, though not as powerful as essences. The elemental masters who carry these elements are stronger than other EMs.

Elements of Destruction:

These are the elements that are derived purely from destruction - if you combined them you would get pure destruction. The Oni that possess these cannot have another element, again because they are too powerful. The elemental masters who carry these elements are stronger than other EMs.

Sound

Associated with Creation:

These are the other elements dragons can wield. Being less powerful than those derived straight from creation, dragons can sometimes possess muliple of them at once. The masters of these elements cannot possess multiple and will be weaker than the elements of creation and destruction.

Associated with Destruction:

These are the other elements Oni can wield. Being less powerful than those derived straight from destruction, Oni can sometimes possess muliple of them at once. The masters of these elements cannot possess multiple and will be weaker than the elements of creation and destruction.

Form - While an element in terms of elemental masters, form isn't an element when it comes to the Oni, and is rather an ability that all Oni possess, regardless of what element they have.

Wojira’s Elements:

These are the elements that didn't come into existence with the First Realm, but rather when Wojira, the incarnation of the realm that the continent of Ninjago is in, came into existence. That's why the First Spinjitzu Master cannot wield them.

Wind - The mortal form of the element of storm. Morro is it's the first user, which is why Wu thought Morro might be the green ninja.

Water - The mortal form of the element of wave.

In addition to working out how the elements work I've also worked out some lore for Wojira and the First Spinjitzu Master. Which I'll write an actual post about sometime.

Other Elements:

Amber - An artificial element created by a mortal a few thousand years after Ninjago's creation.

Time - Time is an element created in the First Realm, but unlike the others, it is neither a element of creation nor destruction. As such both Oni and Dragon can possess it. Like the elements of creation and destruction, any dragons and Oni that possess will not be able to use another element.

While this makes sense to me, I'm not sure how much sense it will make to others, so please ask any questions you might have!

so like I made an element post several months ago and. found it today (because I don’t post much right now lol) and was thinking about it so I tried making a chart of how I think elements might be related

I didn’t put the new elements in the “tree” simply because. I think it’d render this entirely irrelevant by the time part 2 comes out. and. I have zero clue how to sort them Ngl.

(Tbh I was very torn on whether to just do elements in general or elements by like elemental masters. Because. the two are very different for me. So I did do an alternative version but I scrapped it cuz it made no sense and I didn’t like it but I’ll show it at the end)

The lines just show there’s some relation between them. Sometimes elements can control eachother, sometimes only one can control the other, etc.

basically I think that the elements existed in ninjago BEFORE the FSM came into existence. If there was an ocean there has to be a sea floor. If there was a storm there has to be lightning, so on and so forth. The elements always existed and have always been intrinsic parts of ninjago. This might also apply to some of the other realms, specifically the first realm probably also abides by this. Since several native species in ninjago have elemental traits plus. Wojira. it’s probably always been present to some degree, just not usually in humans. So while the original elemental masters of creation may have gotten their powers from the FSM, the elements themselves exist in a lot of places and have always been present in the realm. In fact I think a lot of the “secondary” elemental masters probably got it from the environment somehow like the way water and wind ems seem to have gotten it from wojira (? Tbh I don’t remember much of seabound since I never rewatched it and that part of the lore had tons of plotholes iirc so it was really hard for me to follow)

Gravity, light and time are the most “overarching” elements because they mainly define a lot of the basic principles of the world and so without those elements the others can’t really exist. Especially gravity. Time and gravity are related since time is affected by gravity.

Mind and amber are sort of their own things. Amber is manmade (apparently??? I think I read the comic but I don’t know if it’s still considered canon and I forgot most of it lol ) so it isn’t actually related to any other element even if you would sort of think it was.

mind is really confusing because it’s not really a physical thing or related to any sort of foundational law or… anything, really. It’s just very isolated from the other elements and not really. Connected to any of them. So tbh I’m just gonna shove it with amber in the weird squad.

Also here’s the original list that was based around origins. I think it looks cleaner but it definitely makes a lot less sense.

I mostly scrapped it bc I didn’t like the placements of gravity and stuff or the fact that a lot of related elements weren’t depicted that at.

This is a bracket tournament like the real tournament of elements, with a new match up every day or so. This is a match up between the elements themselves, not the masters of those elements.

Creation, Destruction, and Amber aren’t participating due to being too overpowered.

Long before time had a name the first Spinjitsu Master harnessed the power of Four Original Elements of Creation and Destruction…

Fire

Ice

Lighting

Earth

All branched out from his own Elemental Essence…Balance itself.

The First Spinjitsu Master’s Powers balanced themselves as one with their destructive and Creative sides.

Ice: The Element of the Cold Unforgiving Temperatures. Ice is the Element of the Frost, and can bring about the end of life, cooling the spirit to exhaustion. It’s power to bring in the cold unrelenting blizzards of the north and the icy shores that prevent the life from quenching their thirst.

But beyond the snow and ice, lies within its beauty, preserving life until it hatches, being able to grow beyond its reach, waters clearer than the skies above as the ice melts creating it’s river and if you gaze in deep enough, you gain the wisdom of foresight…if strong enough, one’s eyes can see the world beyond what mortals see, and even stronger, change the course of Destiny, from within the ice…

Lightning: One Element usually associated with Destruction…through the slight flash, in an instant, light and darkness collide with one another, once struck by the light one could instantly perish from its power.

Beyond it’s destruction, lies its light, thousands hide within the storms away from the worlds who dare seek their life, the lightning and the storms giving protection to those within, and once one learns to control its chaotic might, one might invent the impossible, creating the advancements necessary to improvement and evolution. Even some theorize that the lightning itself could bring back the dead.

Earth: The Element of Might and Steel, the Earth itself is unpredictable, one does not simply control it and it always remembers. The Earth itself, if strong could break and separate, dry and crack, fill and explode and fall and crumble. The Earth is an element of strength and power, forcing those to live and cower from its sheer might alone if one were to harm it.

But even the Earth has its joys, mountains that reach the skies and caves that surround the life around it from harm, greens produced from the ground that give the necessary nutrients for life around them, the grounds of the very waters that fill it and warmth to those that need it, it is a symbol of might and protection, but lose control and one will cause destruction.

Lastly Fire: The most destructive element. Fire has been known to burn down thousands of civilizations, forests, lands and temples. It is the most dangerous weapon and element to exist, while water may defeat it in it’s purest forms, Fire combined with the Earth can be used to heat the world and set it aflame. It’s fire spreads through the land turning the world into a living hellscape, causing the temperatures and the living to cry out in its wake.

But Fire can also be a light for those lost. Fire can be used to guide those lost in the dark, to tell stories with friends and family and to provide heat and comfort for those who need it. It is a destructive weapon that is necessary in everyday life, using its power to guide and protect those it touches.

These four elements are the advocates of the Balance, passed down to others by the First Spinjitsu Master and branched out from generation to generation before he passed.

The current bearers; The Ninja, have used it for centuries on end and have used its power to protect the balance and its creed until the day the balance will truly be restored from its former glory…

But with the Green Ninja gone…time is at the essence…The Green Ninja cannot hold the Darkness for all of eternity, but knows as long as his soul is bound to the very land of Ninjago, he can weaken it till it cannot be seen…until then…before the light of the elements gets snuffed out…The Next Incarnation of the Balance will be Chosen for all Generations…

Elements Branched Out from the Four:

Nature

Branched out from Earth

Allows the owner to harness the very will of Nature itself, however it cannot create Nature and needs and original source to control it. Creating life is exclusively from the Green Ninja’s element. ‘Balance’ now named ‘Energy’

Mind

Branched out from Lightning

Lightning once had the innate ability to control the nerves of the body, and thus at some point it branched out into Mind Powers, its possible for one to have Psychokinetic abilities from said powers, however the current owner Neuro can get strained from holding too many heavy objects

Smoke

Branched out from Fire

Allows the user to become one with the air and smoke, sometimes even having the ability of teleportation. It can also be used to create mists and redirect enemies, confusing them.

Metal

Branched out from Earth

Metal used to be a thing from Earth actually, but at some point, a master of Earth either gave birth to twins and they inherited one half of the power or a master of Earth died and gave half of the power to their successor, either way it’s an element now.

Gravity

Branched out from Earth and Lightning

Allows the user to manipulate the gravity around them, the current master of gravity: Great Great Grandson of Gravis, has chosen to branch out the Element’s strength and since then has now known the ability to increase gravity rather than make one float.

Speed

Branched out from Lightning

Allows the user to manipulate their speed, it can make them extremely fast, it is unknown what the limits to this speed is however, most base him off of a DC Hero, but the current Master of Speed: Griffin Turner has since denied these comparisons saying that ‘The Flash’ is a cheap knock-off of what he can really do.

Poison

Branched out from Earth

Allows the user to create poisonous anything, poisonous gas, liquid and even toxic minerals. This highly affects the way their skin is shown, due to the fact one must learn every single poison in existence before creating one so deadly.

Form

Branched out from Earth and Ice

It is actually unknown where this branched off from, but it is highly suggested that Earth might be one of the elements that branched off such an Element, it allows the user to change form to whoever they want.

Light

Branched out from Fire

Allows the user to manipulate light to the point they become light itself, whether it manipulates the very will of light is still in question.

Shadow

Branched out from Fire and Lightning.

Allows the user to manifest themselves into the shadows or even go as far as controlling the shadows.

Sound

Branched out from Lightning

Allows the user to manipulate the very power of sound with their voice, instrument or vibrations. Very useful if the user is blind. Has gone through several generations, the current holder being the 17th Generation of the Master of Sound.

Elements from Ninjago:

Water

It’s original Master being Wojira, it is a powerful element, allowing the user to control the waters, rivers and oceans as well as interact with Sea animals.

Wind

The other element originating from Wojira, it has the ability to control the air itself. And a heck lot of effort, it can be deadly if used enough.

Amber

An Element made from the grounds of Ninjago, a blacksmith from Metalonia crafted chronosteel and used the Urn of Emity to create such an element.

Time

It is unknown how this element originated or who’s its original master was, but it is clear it’s not from Ninjago. As there are no Time Dragons in The First Realm.

New Elements in this AU:

One is Decay, however that is considered related to Destruction.

Age:

The Lore in this AU is that Elemental Masters don’t age unless they give up their powers towards their successor/descendant.

Which is the explanation as to why the Ninja in this AU excluding Lloyd are 5000 years old.

Getting and Elemental Power is decided by 3 Categories:

Genetical, Destiny, Choice.

Destiny

Destiny is simple, the Elemental Master dies and has no successor/descendant so destiny chooses the next.

In relation to this, many forces have to be manipulated into choosing the next holder, but not always is the one gaining the element the right choice when it comes to Destiny I.E The Hands of Time.

So usually, while they’re still alive, Elemental Masters will produce an offspring to pass on the lineage or look for a decent successor.

Genetical

This is when the Elemental Master Produces an off spring and has a choice whether or not to pass on their power to them. However, should the Elemental Master pass on, it will always be given to the child, never whoever was training under them.

Choice

This is when an Elemental Master guides and trains a successor or for whatever reason cannot produce an offspring, as such an Elemental Master has the choice give away their power and pass it onto the next generation.

I had an evil Jay idea... so I did it.

During the tournament, Jay holds nothing back and ends up REALLY hurting Lloyd with his powers

he feels horrible afterwards but has no clue why. Lloyd is the enemy! ...right?
