what comes next though? (MHA ch. 413)
// major spoilers for mha ch. 413 since its leaks, so please stop reading if you arent quite caught up. i havent written one of these in a LONGGG while lmao.
ANYWAY, with all that being said.... this week's leaks huh?
We saw it coming a long time ago, we speculated it to hell and back, we made aus and fics, and now it's finally here. The conclusion we've reached and the one that's been hinted at since the release of Heroes Rising in 2019:
bnha is going to end with deku giving up one for all and becoming quirkless.
(LOTS of words under the cut -- youve been warned.)
For those who are a little lost; the basic premise of the ending we are hurtling towards is that Kudou (the 2nd user of ofa) has a plan to take down Shigaraki. With AfO dead and gone + Shigaraki becoming so powerful he is essentially invincible -- theres no other choice for the heroes other than destroying him inside out; the plan being the equivalent of charging a battery so much it explodes.
the way they're going to go about this is by essentially, feeding Shigaraki bits of One for All until he's given all of it -- then allowing the vestiges of the previous wielders to create a massive revolt similar to what SnS did until they can successfully tear him apart from inside the "quirk realm" and shut him out. Kudou volunteers to go next since danger sense has already been taken, and if Shigaraki uses gearshift again after Deku already used it twice, Tomura's body will likely shutdown and receive twice the backlash Deku does when he uses kudou's quirk.
(sidenote: funny as fuck that deku only understood once kudou equated the strategy to bkg throwing papers at him. bro stupid af.)
its a sensible(ish) idea. one that seems plausible given the context of the last hundred or so chapters with heroes like Hawks and SnS having their quirks revolt against both AfO and Shigaraki in a way that makes it clear that its not uniquely OfA that animates the souls of peoples quirks. Its inherent. Quote, Nana Shimura, "romantic" even.
(let it be known though that i think hori absolutely did not plan on delving into this plot point as much as he is now. ill explain in a bit, but heroes rising was 100% a major factor of why he moved in this direction.)
That being said, the conclusion of the plan (and subsequently, the major plot of bnha) is as follows: Deku gives up One for All to Shigaraki. One for All unites with All for One within Shigaraki and destroys it in one final clash between Yoichi and his brother. The break in the barrier of Shigaraki's hatred will part, letting him find the consciousness of Shimura Tenko behind it after years.
Shigaraki dies, taking OfA and AfO down with him,
and then Deku is quirkless once more.
Sad conclusion aside for now, I firmly believe that no matter what way you look at it; Deku was always meant to end the story without a quirk. Given some of the original drafts of bnha where Deku was never supposed to be given a quirk in the first place, this is clearly unsurprising. What's more is my favorite piece of information relative to katsuki and deku's character development:
the fact that heroes rising was (one of the) ideas for the original ending of bnha.
a refresher for some of you: heroes rising is about class 1a going to the isolated village of nabu island and defending it against an upcoming big bad villain named "nine" with a quirk that is essentially a scaled down version of all for one. katsuki and deku eventually resolve the conflict together via brute force by deku giving katsuki ofa, them rushing in while the quirk is transferring and both of them have it, and then ultimately defeating nine at the end. the movie then of course circles back on deku losing one for all, undoing that consequence by saying the transfer never completed bc ofa chose him over katsuki and they all move on to the endeavor agency arc with katsuki remembering absolutely nothing of the final battle.
many fans often misunderstand one of horikoshi's quotes about the movie in that it was, without a doubt, the original ending of bnha. for the sake of accuracy, that is not what horikoshi really said; what he ACTUALLY said was something closer and to the tune of of how it was "one OF the endings" he planned on using for bnha, but his original idea for how the story ends "has not changed one bit."
obviously disregarding the cop out where ofa sticks back to izuku in order for the series to continue as normal; this can only confirm that bnha was going to end with midoriya izuku quirkless whether katsuki was involved or not.
so what's different this time?
its hard to figure out how far horikoshi had planned the ending of bnha with heroes rising's prototype conclusion in mind. if heroes rising never pulled through and horikoshi had planned on bnha ending with the shared ofa transfer and katsuki continuing deku's legacy -- then that means katsuki wouldve died an early death because of all might's confirmation that only quirkless people can hold on to one for all without dying young, meaning he either intended on katsuki dying soon after the story ends or only planned that plot point after heroes rising was released.
the plot as well of heroes rising's conclusion cannot have been thought of all that early on because of ANOTHER tidbit of information that changes perspective of the entire series: in that,
bakugou katsuki was never supposed to be a major character to begin with. (keep an eye on this link; i reference this interview a LOT)
he was not supposed to have an arc. he was not supposed to become a major focal point of the series. he was not meant to be the hero he is in the story today. bakugou katsuki was not written with the intention of being a major narrative this late into the story -- instead originally only existing as a character that deku would surpass within the first few arcs.
but then katsuki cried, and deku apologized, and then opened his big fat mouth, and then told him a secret he didnt even tell his own mother -- and suddenly bakugou katsuki was not just another footnote in deku's story, but a legitimate character that grew and created one of the most loved (and hated) character turnarounds in shonen history. he started of as a literal EXTRA before snowballing into the very same character horikoshi decided would defeat all for one, the original scariest antagonist of the entire series. someone not even ALL MIGHT could defeat.
but circling back, yeah. heroes rising was definitely not the ending horikoshi thought of first, nor was it the ending he thought of last. ultimately, it was simply another route he couldve taken into wrapping up deku's fate into what it was (probably) always meant to be:
deku was gonna lose one for all no matter what.
it's kind of fitting, honestly -- for this to be the ultimate conclusion to the series. it makes the most sense, since what sent deku down this path so many years ago was his mother apologizing to deku for being quirkless; as if being quirkless meant he was born inferior to those who had quirks. people, after all according to deku's famous beginning monologue, are not born equal.
Even still, i thought to note: deku never stopped wanting to be a hero. we all know this, obviously. this was his driving force -- but then when you REALLY think about the implications, you have to ask. what the heck was deku even planning to do?!
he had ideas. he had hope. he wrote notebooks for the future and thought of his costume for being a hero -- but not once do i remember him writing about his hero experience as if he was suddenly going to develop a quirk. he was planning on saving people quirkless -- an extremely interesting motivation especially when he couldve so easily chosen to walk the path of being a doctor or engineer instead if he wanted to save people so badly. its a story about conviction, about doing the things you wanna do in the way you wanna do it no matter what ANYONE else says and hey wait a minute that sounds familiar
it doesnt quite read that way at first, especially because of how izuku almost listened to all might about "being realistic" when the first met and nearly gave up on becoming a hero entirely, but izuku is a lot similar to katsuki in the sense that no matter what gets in his way -- he is determined to achieve his dreams in the way HE CHOOSES, and not the way that is more "convenient".
even when you look at just his name, "deku" in the way that uraraka had interpreted it (dekiru -- "you can do it!") and the way deku reexplains it to katsuki in deku vs kacchan 1 ("the deku that doesn't give up!") you can so easily tell that deku from the very beginning has only ever needed the slightest push to pursue being a hero, quirk-or-not-be-damned. hell, we even see a glimpse of this possibility in the sports festival race when deku absolutely DECIMATES not just bakugou but also TODOROKI (as well as every single other damn student participating in the festival) with nothing but robot scraps and his balls of steel. it just so happens that until the promise of one for all, no such encouragement or push was ever given to deku in his pursuit of heroicism, most especially in comparison to katsuki who had been receiving praise and validation for his goals his whole life.
i'd argue that deku's conviction is even stronger than katsuki in a way no other person seems to recognize (except maybe katsuki himself). katsuki had received only positive feedback and zero competition for his goals growing up while deku received nothing but discouragement. both of them kept the conviction of being a hero for TEN YEARS; neither wavering til the day of the sludge incident.
that aside; what comes next?
we know the story after that. deku gets his quirk, he goes to school, he fights, he drops out, he fights some more, and now he's standing before shigaraki tomura with every quirk of one for all unlocked and over twice the power that all might had in his prime -- fully knowing he's about to lose EVERYTHING in order to defeat shigaraki.
this is deku we're talking about. he doesn't care. he knows the implications and what that will mean for his dream -- but his goal right now is in front of him. his goal is shigaraki, consumed by hatred, threatening to take down the world izuku loves most into a pit of misery and decay because society failed people like them. does he care? probably. will he refuse to give up his power if it means not saving the world and fulfilling one for all's purpose? absolutely not.
deku has made all might's quirk his own, but one for all does not belong to him. it belongs to yoichi. and kudou. and bruce and nana and all of the other users who built that quirk for generations in hopes that one day, someday, someone would be able to yield it all and bring down the monstrosity that created it in the first place. deku will not hesitate, but also deku knows what he will lose.
i have... a few things i dislike about this.
Admittedly, i do think that this is a better resolution than the simple brute strength approach of Heroes Rising. For one, while i do love heroes rising with my entire heart and soul, i firmly believe it would not have been a satisfying conclusion to the core lessons and teachings bnha tries to impart throughout the story. simply outnumbering and outpowering afo/shigaraki would not be enough to close yoichi's story and one for all -- much less the story of shigaraki himself as tenko, the boy consumed by hatred.
Still, this new ending that horikoshi has laid out leaves me with more questions; as well as large expectations for how izuku's character will close out. its complicated, because deku's evolution and development is subtle and intricate in a way i havent seen from other shonen protagonists and i worry about doing it justice.
but most of my problems have to do with bakugou katsuki.
(aint that the truth)
i know i mentioned that bakugou was never intended to be a major character, but i want it to be known that that was only in the beginning. season 1, maybe even season 2 -- but horikoshi had said it best himself in that bakugou katsuki, against his permission, had gained a life of his own and inserted himself into the very grain of mha's story. you cannot deny this.
he is the series deuteroganist inarguably. one of the most beloved characters and one of the most attentively-written development arcs in the whole series. katsuki in and of himself embodies major themes in bnha that make it so that ditching his development and impact last minute after defeating all for one would reflect poorly upon the conclusion of the story itself. he and deku are intertwined in arcs -- even if they do have separate paths at the end of the day. katsuki is the one izuku told about the quirk. the one who followed izuku during the paranormal liberation arc. the one who understands one for all and is determined to learn about it more than anyone else barring all might and deku himself. the one who is closer to izuku than anyone else.
it can't be over for their arc, no matter what way you see it. friends? rivals? hero partners? what comes next, when the smoke clears? what comes next when izuku gives shigaraki hell, like katsuki told him to?
katsuki's atoned. we accept that, have known it since chapter 285 and have continued to know it until the iconic apology in the rain. that's not where katsuki stops however, because we know that its not all about begging for izuku's forgiveness nor atoning for himself. its about catching up to izuku -- the last words he uttered before shigaraki crushed his heard say it all.
"can i still catch up to you, izuku?"
since the moment katsuki died, we've been given a metric ton of material to read through what he and izuku have become in the story. firstly, the point of katsuki being the person closest to izuku. what does this mean? what does that say about katsuki? is he supposedly the person izuku loves the most? the person izuku believes in the most? i'd argue these two criterion would easily fit his mother or all might a lot better -- not his childhood friend turned bully turned rival turned barely-friend. katsuki sure as hell didn't believe he was the person closest to izuku before shigaraki brought it up as evidenced by the fact that he let IIDA bring deku back to UA -- and neither does izuku as far as i bet. what was shigaraki's intention?
katsuki heard that statement. he hasnt said anything, but he definitely heard it. its an open end that is left entirely unanswered PRECISELY because katsuki fought afo on his own and izuku is about to tackle shigaraki without katsuki by his side. if it was heroes rising's ending wherein they would both fight shigaraki and take him down together -- then that statement would easily be answered by how their strength and bond is the one thing that gave them an upper hand in the final battle. other than that... i'm not entirely sure how they're going to have katsuki and izuku acknowledge katsuki's brief "death" and Tomura's reasons thereof.
But fine, lets ignore that for the time being and move on to what happened when Katsuki came back.
katsuki answered izuku's cry for help. he came back to life in the last moment to save all might when izuku was too busy fighting tooth and nail to win. they are the penultimate example of two sides of a hero; the win and save. not one without the other. every single parallel thus far between izuku and katsuki have always been to draw attention over and over to each of their stubborn convictions to win and save under all might's tutelage.
katsuki has chosen to prioritize winning and fighting over saving and rescuing over. and over. and over. and over again. at every single opportunity from the very beginning of the series. in usj, in sports festival, in the final exam, every choice he's made up until --
chapter 285 - bakugou katsuki: rising.
he chooses to save izuku in this instant. as he says, his body moved on its own -- or in other words, he felt like how izuku has always did since the sludge villain incident. this is bakugou katsuki catching up to midoriya izuku. its katsuki realizing that he needs to save so deku can win, and actually being okay with that for once. it's a major turning point in his character that clearly tells even horikoshi that there's absolutely no way katsuki can go back to being a side character within the plot of bnha after a development like this.
and then, after this instance, we notice it happen again and again. katsuki choosing to save to win instead of winning to save. katsuki protecting best jeanist against the nomu. katsuki coming to chase after izuku when he runs away from UA. katsuki (in a way) saving aoyama when its revealed he's the traitor. hell, katsuki saving ALL MIGHT as soon as izuku -- the savior -- begs someone to save his idol when he can't because he's too focused on trying to win.
so what changed?
what changed since the moment of chapter 285 was katsuki accepting his fears and anxieties. katsuki letting go of his aversity to working with deku. the reason katsuki started accepting the path of saving to win was because he TRUSTED deku to win where he couldnt.
this is katsuki accepting that him and izuku already surpassed all might together.
but katsuki said it himself. it's not over. he accepts that him and izuku are finally on equal footing -- hell, he admits he's the one who needs to play catch up. it's not about katsuki conceding to weakness, but katsuki being able to trust in izuku to finish the job. the point is that they both will break and break until they win the way they choose to, and the other will be there to win while they save and save while they win. moreso, katsuki still wants to be number 1. he still wants to catch up and surpass deku. he wants to fight by deku's side. but ... as we've established:
deku will be quirkless soon.
my problem (or, i guess, curiosity?) with the path horikoshi seems to be going down for the end of this story is what happens to this end? what happens to the wonder duo? i believe in a quirkless deku plot as much as the next person -- but any reader would find it easy to see that once deku loses one for all, he will not be nearly as efficient nor quick nor capable of a hero as he once was. especially not against a developed katsuki with mastery over cluster explosions.
he will lose one for all and he won't ever be the pro-hero he was going to be before the final war arc. katsuki will get number 1 surely, but will he be happy about this resolution? i don't think so. All Might himself had said it when Katsuki spoke to him about his relationship to Izuku; that the twin stars reminded All Might very much of his own rivalry with Endeavor and the bitter feelings it created.
endeavor expressed regret and a bitter end to their rivalry; the acknowledgement of the bitter truth that the only reason he was the number one hero is because all might lost his own quirk. he knew he didn't deserve the mantle all might had held for a long time before him. he knew that he was still only just playing catch up with the wisdom and understanding of heroicism that all might had in his heart from the beginning. endeavor will likely retire from being a pro-hero unsatisfied with this truth and his own victory at becoming the no.1 at the very end -- never feeling like he truly surpassed all might of his own accord. both enji and toshinori -- victims of their destiny.
is this the fate that will befall katsuki once izuku is quirkless for good?
There are many questions I have in wake of the recent chapter. The end of the series is here, and that's a whole can of worms i haven't touched in and of itself. We all saw this coming; some of us know that this was always going to be Izuku's fate since the beginning of the series. But now that it's more than just izuku's character involved in his dreams of being a hero -- i dont know how this series is going to conclude and if it will be satisfying to any means. there's a lot of questions i still have; bakugous arc feeling incomplete ever since he came back to life, the conclusion of all might and one for all's dreams now that they will disappear altogether. where does deku go after this? where does bakugou go? where do any of them?
i guess i gotta wait and see lol

[Kudo and his name in Japanese weddings]
I don't know how else to put it but that. I just think some crack stuff and symbolism can be drawn from this
In Japan, there's a traditional wedding custom where three sake cups are exchanged between the bride and groom (yes, three *COUGH* first 3 users-)
The exchange is called "San-San-Kudo". It translates to "three-three-nine-times".
(OFA's first three users, and the fact there are nine wielders-)
This exchange of cups is meant to symbolize union, and the blending of their families. Three sips are taken from each of the three cups, culminating in nine sips.
The number 3 is meant to symbolize birth, life, and death. The first 3 sips are about human relationships; the next set of 3 are human flaws (passion, hatred, ignorance); and the last 3 are three joys (freedom from the 3 human flaws)
(This totally matches Yoichi and AFO even a little bit, right- and Kudo is the one who took Yoichi from the vault-)
By exchanging the cups, it means you'll both share in life's experiences together. It's a tribute to those who came before you.
For more reading, you can look up "San-San-Kudo", but here's a link that states this tradition "also serves as a reminder of the enduring power of culture, tradition, and the bonds of love."
In other words, Kudo's name can be directly linked to wedding customs, and it's so full of stuff that can be used for ships and symbolism-
#only found out about this cuz i was trying to understand traditional japanese weddings#and found “san-san-kudo” and immediately made the connection to kudos name#buuut im just posting this now#i just wanna say i think that even if its not canon#kudo can be gay and thats totally fine. cmon look at him. look at THIS.#bnha#mha#boku no hero academia#my hero academia#yoichi shigaraki#afo#all for one#kudo#one for all#ofa#spoilers#kudos name has WEDDING SIGNIFICANCE#do you hear the bells ringingggg-#turn it around a bit and its literally just “Kudo-san”

The kanji "久"in Izuku name that is a homophonous to "nine" (九, "nine" kyū), which refers to him being the ninth user of One For All, it is also the same kanji as Hisashi's name (久), it is curious how the kanji that Izuku received from his father is the same kanji that is used to reference him as the ninth user of One for All, as well as Yoichi he received the Quirk that together with his own would become OFA, it is also important to note that AFO refers to himself as the Father of One for all, and in several moments he refers to Izuku simply as "One for all"

You’ve come to the right place! As a Villain Yoichi fan I have a bunch of fics I wrote and some recs for you! My fics:
The Devil’s Double by katydid: A fic based on the idea that All for One and Yoichi started out working together as villains before falling out, leading to Yoichi creating One for All. The first 5 chapters have them working together as a villain team.
The Family that Slays Together Stays Together by katydid: Playing the concept of villain Yoichi completely straight. Yoichi is 100% evil and AFO gets his happy ending.
Genetics by katydid: In which Yoichi eventually fails to overcome the family evil genes.
A Mirror Badly Cracked by katydid: The concept of “vestige Yoichi was always secretly on AFO’s side” but played for crack.
All the Devils Are Here by katydid: What if instead of Yoichi dying, All for One captured him and brainwashed him into becoming a villain? (Note: this story was written before we got a name for the First, so I made one up.)
The End of the Story by katydid: In which the battle between AFO and OFA is just a game between two twisted brothers.
Fics by other people:
All for Chaos series by AnikaSukino: AFO successfully turns a big portion of the cast to villainy. Part 3 focuses on Yoichi becoming a villain.
A Lie from One through Nine by vestiges_from_within: Vestige Yoichi was always secretly on AFO’s side but playing it straight unlike my fic.
COLD by MamaShenanigans: A real world take on Yoichi joining AFO (rec-ing this is a bit of a spoiler).
Ouroboros by LiteralPieceOfTrash: Another take on the idea of the entire AFO and OFA battle being a game between the brothers.
Radial Crack by MissRemember: Yoichi leaves Second and Third and reappears on AFO’s side for unknown reasons.
By the way, Evil Yoichi | First One For All User (My Hero Academia) is a filterable tag, but not all of the above works are tagged Evil Yoichi. Villain is not exactly the same as evil. We need a Villain tag too.
Happy reading!
Devastated today, actually.
I was thinking about V:TGG, and there's one line in one chapter in an internal monologue by afo with plenty more subjects! And the line boils down to "it would've been so cool, actually, if Yoichi didn't betray me, and we just ruled Japan together"
This au concept has haunted me for months, and yet villain Yoichi is not a recognized tag. If anybody knows of an example of this, I beg that you share it.

Shinomori Hikage
Well, apparently the name of the 4th Wielder of OfA is Shinomori Hikage and as I wrote in this post, his name indeed has to do with Shi (the number 4 [し、よん (shi, yon] , associated with Death (死, shi) - refer to linked post for more details) and that his life has been consumed (as he died very young) because of OfA (see this post for OfA holders and their relation in terms of names and numerology).
I don’t know whether I feel contradicted or not, but the point that names and the number of holders have something in common still stands, which also means that the names of the 2nd, 3rd and 6th OfA users have to do with number 2, 3 and 6. In particular:
Number 2 (に (ni) - with the kanji being 二) which means that the name will have Ni in it.
Number 3 (さん (san) - with the kanji being 三) , which might figure in the name of the 3rd holder of OfA.
Number 6 (ろく (roku) - with the kanji being 六) reflecting a possible name in which these characters or furigana are embedded.
A peculiar case, instead might be constituted by the name of the First Holder. We know, from AfO’s words that he is a Shigaraki - and then, by association, his younger brother should also be a Shigaraki (however, there might be instead an exception in the fact that they might not be blood brothers, but step-brother, AfO might have just adopted the surname later because he refused his previous identity and needed a new name, or even that the First Holder has changed name so their surname might be different). I am going to take this information with a pinch of salt, and speculate instead on his name. Number 1, in Japanese is いち (ichi) with the kanji being 一; so, per logic, his name should be Shigaraki and then a name which encompasses ichi (it would be funny if it was Ichigo, because it would mean First Guardian, or even number I (literally) which kind of fits the theme of him being the First Holder or ‘guardian’ of OfA).
A note, on Number 8 (which is AM’s number): the number 7 is a lucky number in Japanese culture, but apparently so is 8! This is due to the shape of the kanji 八, which reminds of growth and prosperity (also luck and success). Tied to this meaning, from the leaks of this week, is the information that AM was not only the holder of OfA that retained the power for more time (around 40 years) but as well the one who made OfA as strong as it is now. The vestige world, where the consciousnesses of the previous OfA holders now live, is indeed the result of effort of All Might’s life and his, unprecedented, capability to grow older with OfA still inhabiting him (this ties with the matter that all OfA holders died young). This also might be why Yagi is the only one to have survived so long, and why OfA had such an exponential grow that now, it cannot indeed by passed down to anyone (as the Quirk is too great to be held).
As Izuku is speculated to be the last user of OfA (because it would be impossible for someone to wield it correctly without it being a danger), some speculations of his name + his destiny.
In Greek Mythology, It takes nine days to fall from heaven to earth, and nine more to fall from earth to Tartarus - which is funny, all considered (and because AfO escaped Tartarus recently) but it might refer how indeed, the number 9 is the end of the cycle and that indeed, with the number 9, things are due to end (this might refer to: AfO dying, or ending in Tartarus again per aid of Number 9 - Izuku, and/or Izuku being the last holder of OfA. A theory about Izuku possibly being the one to ‘consume’ all of OfA’s powers, together with the other holders, in order to put an end to AfO and therefore extinguishing its purpose (and leaving Izuku quirkless again, as in coming full cycle) is in progress.
in Numerology, the number 9 is the end of all things in the universe, and as well the ‘completion’ of the cycle - which again refers to Izuku being the last holder and yada yada. There are more references of the meaning of Number 9 associated with Izuku (sacrificing to a fault, suffering life, attracting souls for support, inspiration for others, destiny and life purpose as well as selflessness).
Indeed, number 9 “[…] is compassionate, kind, and intent on putting its efforts toward creating the greatest good” - and if this statement were to be interpreted in might mean that the greatest good is to free the world from its demon lord, and have a new light shine on it). - The ultimate goal number 9 is to serve humanity (sounds like a prophecy).
And finally, number 9 (its qualities are those of leadership, the ability to see clearly, integration, the three worlds – physical, intellectual, spirituality which also refers to the colours of Midoriya, of which I talked about here).
A fun fact on Number 0 [(れい、ゼロ、マル (rei, zero, maru) - with the kanji being 零]: the same characters are used in the name of Rei as in Rei Todoroki) 冷 ( れい ) - I am not speculating on anything about what this means (but there might be some space for speculation since Rei has knowingly said that now ‘She is here’, which might be a reference to All Might’s catchphrase ‘I’m here’).

Bnha theory:
One for all was created from when all for one gave a stockpiling quirk to first. But the question is, where did AFO get that stockpiling quirk?
Introducing the vestige Zero theory.
Vestige Zero refers to the original stockpiling quirk’s owner before AFO stole it to and gave it to first.
Now what does stockpiling mean?
To put it bluntly, it means the accumulation of… in this case power.
First’s original quirk itself makes it so he can pass on quirks, meaning it didn’t collect power or experience over time.
Zero’s quirk stockpile most likely allowed him to accumulate physical strength after training and EXPERIENCING growth, Kinda like an RPG leveling up system but only with the physical body and mind.
It has been hinted at in BNHA that quirks once ripped from their host, leave remnants of the original users intact. This can include their conscience (or at least a piece of it) and emotions.
The prime example is OFA stockpiling the vestiges. It is assumed that when the two quirks combined into OFA, it carried over traits of both quirks into a single “core” that continued to grow over the generations. Eventually this led to nine (Izuku) to manifest multiple quirks and interact with the vestiges.
Zero however isn’t shown because once stockpile was pulled out by AFO, the quirk had to start over in collecting power. AFO then deemed it useless to him.
Because of the assumption, AFO didn’t realize the potential of the seemingly weak quirk.
But the quirk itself is a testament that Zero is possibly present but not to the extent as the other vestiges.
To end off OFA was created by AFO stealing a stockpiling quirk and giving to his brother. Vestige Zero kept the quirk together and helped it grow through the generations.
Vestige Zero will always remain a mystery, as they will probably never be revealed or mentioned. But it is up to the imagination of the reader to decide if it’s plausible.
Thanks for reading.

Open for movie speculation? :) The new key visual was released today and if you don't want miniscule spoilers then I'll gladly spend the time asking how you're doing in these times and how you light up my saturday with your posts that never cease to make me laugh haha. I do hope you're doing well :) So here's the wee spoiler (or should I call it a spoiler?) the antagonist(?) is called "Flect Turn", hope you have a nice week :)
so as usual, I'm late in responding to this, but I just wanted to clarify that my "no spoilers, please" policy pretty much only applies to the new BnHA manga chapters, and that's specifically because of the weekly reaction posts. I know part of the appeal of a liveblog is watching someone else's reactions to all of the surprises and twists and wtf moments, and so I try to preserve those each week. if I wasn't liveblogging the series I would probably be reading the leaks along with everybody else to tell the truth lol.
so that said, feel free to send me spoilers about the upcoming movie! out of respect for those who do want to avoid being spoiled, I'll tag those posts (and this one) with "bnha world heroes' mission spoilers" and "bnha movie 3 spoilers" so people can blacklist those tags if desired. but I personally have no objection to them; back when Heroes Rising came out I already knew all of the plot points and had read detailed spoiler summaries well before I finally got the chance to watch it myself. it definitely did not take away from the experience at all, and in fact I'm kind of glad I knew about the end twist ahead of time because I was able to devote more mental energy to analyzing and appreciating it rather than still being all "!!!!" from the shock lol.
so yeah, I've been trying to stay up to date with the news about WHM as well. here's everything I think we know so far:
the movie will take place during the Endeavor Agency internship, as expected.
the bad guys are a terrorist organization called "Humanize", who believe in the Quirk Singularity Doomsday Theory we first learned about during the Remedial arc. as a refresher, basically the idea is that as quirks continue to evolve with each new generation, they'll eventually grow too powerful for humans to control and will destroy the world or something lol.
anyway so Humanize hears about this, and they're either like, "man that sucks, we should just kill everyone with a quirk so it doesn't happen", OR they're like "man that sounds awesome, we should totally expedite that." like, I'm really not clear on this part lol. but either way, they apparently come up with a plan to cleanse the world of quirk users by planting magical plot bombs called Ideo Trigger Bombs, which make people lose control of their quirks.
as mentioned, the bad guys' leader is named Flect Turn for god knows what reason lmao. I'm guessing it's some kind of weird play on the word "reflect" (especially given his character design), and based on that, as well as the Ideo Triggers, I suspect this guy has the ability to somehow turn people's own quirks against them. you can see him at the bottom of the key visual anon mentioned, here.
anyway so the heroes are all "hmm, pretty sure the end of world = bad" and so they all decide to band together under this "W.H.A." umbrella (which I'm still assuming stands for either World Hero Agency or World Hero Association or something like that) to deal with the bombs.
as shown on the key visual, in addition to the Endeavor Agency trio, the movie will also feature the kids from Ryuukyuu, Fat Gum, Gang Orca (who has Jirou and Shouji interning under him for anyone who lost track), and Hawks's agencies.
the movie will also feature a new character named Rody Soul, who's this weird steampunk Dickensian urchin-looking guy with a ponytail lol. he apparently teams up with the trio following one of the bomb incidents.
most of the movie will apparently take place in a fictional country called Oceon (this is why nobody could quite place where that bridge in the trailer was from lol).
at some point Deku gets framed for murder idk. just Deku things.
and last but not least, as usual there will be a special manga tie-in release, in this case titled "Volume W(orld Heroes)". looks like the initial release will be exclusive to theater-goers in Japan, but I'm sure someone will get their hands on it and post it online, and Viz will eventually release it in English as well (they did the same with the previous two tie-ins). it'll include behind-the-scenes sketches, a new Horikoshi interview (probably the part I'm most looking forward to), and of course, the new movie tie-in chapter. as with the previous tie-ins (Volume Origin and Volume Rising), this will be written and drawn by Horikoshi himself. I'm hoping that it will feature the trio, but the other movie tie-ins featured All Might and Nine, respectively, so it's probably more realistic to assume this one will focus on Rody. ah well.
I think that's it. I haven't really done much speculating about the plot either tbh, though what we've learned seems pretty straightforward. Deku probably either gets framed for one of the bombs, or gets caught up in one of the blasts and loses control of OFA. or maybe they'll save that part for his fight with Flect at the end. god, if we get a scene where he goes on a Blackwhip rampage with a big screen budget I will lose my whole damn mind. especially if Kacchan and Shouto have to work together to stop him. can you imagine omg. but I should really rein myself in before I start getting way too hyped up over a bunch of wild hypotheticals. this is why I try not to speculate lol.
#bnha#bnha world heroes' mission#bnha movie 3#bnha world heroes' mission spoilers#bnha movie 3 spoilers#boku no hero academia#bnha spoilers#makeste reads bnha#asks#anon asks#also thank you very much anon; I'm doing well and I hope you are too!

Hello! I just found you blog and I have to say i absolutly love it! Do u still take requests? If so could i get the First OFA user with a s/o who can cancel out any type of quirk by using her right hand? If ur comfortable writing it could u make s/o pregnant and First had to leave her bc he had to fight his brother. Fast forward and Midoriya meets a girl, the girl being Firsts daughter (she has a long life quirk) and the girl talks about her mother and her father (who she never met) but she's not mad at him for leaving them and tells him how much her mother still loved First so much till her death. Make it angsty with fluffy ending pls. Thanks! Have a nice day/night!
Manga Spoilers Ahead!
Key:
[f/n] = first name
[h/l] = hair length
[h/c] = hair color
[e/c] = eye color
[s/c] = skin color
[d/n] = daughter’s name
First User meeting his daughter.
[insert the first user’s first name] is about to walk out the door when a familiar voice stops him.
“Are you absolutely sure about this?” Asks his wife of nine years, [f/n].
“I am and it isn’t like I have much of a choice.” He tells her.
“Let me help you, with my quirk you’d have a fighting chance!” [f/n] argues.
[f/n]’s quirk allows her to block quirk genes by the touch of her right hand. A very usual but limited quirk. And he isn’t about to place her on the battle field. He can’t do that to her. Anyone but her.
“NO! Please, just stop [f/n] ... I love you too much to lose you.”
“I feel the same. [insert the first user’s first name], please let me help you, we can do this together.” [f/n] continues.
He knows all to well that she isn’t going to stop. Not until he gives in and let’s her help. It was attitude like this that made him fall in love with her.
A sigh escapes his lips as he walks over to her. Cupping her face in his hands, he leans in for a kiss. [f/n] latches onto him refusing to let him go. He holds to her slowly breaking the kiss. He gazes into her watery [e/c] eyes.
She asks, “If I can make one selfish request... Just stay. Just a little longer. Please.” She begs brokenly.
[insert the first user’s first name] can feel his heart breaking as he nods holding her tighter. “Of course my love.”
120 years later, set during Izuku’s new work-study with Endeavor
If there is one thing that Izuku understood about the former users is that they all undoubtedly had regrets. All of them had given up so much to protect the people they cared about and create a bright future without All for One. Izuku often feels guilty for living in the future that the seven before him had strived to create. In this mind they should be the ones living in this society. Not him. If there is a way he can bring them back to live in this era, he’d do it. Even if that means he has to or will die to do it.
Kiddo don’t you fucking dare.
Izuku jumps at a deep voice which sounds a little like Banjo Daigoro, the Fifth User of One for All. Embarrassedly Izuku rubs the back of his head. He should have known the vestiges can feel his thoughts. He mutters a soft apology but gives no explanation knowing that they already know his reasoning for such thoughts.
Walking down the sidewalk, Izuku walks with Katsuki on patrol.
“Can you actually talk with them?” Katsuki asks having heard Izuku mutter.
“Kind of. It’s only Mr. Banjo right now.” Izuku says.
“Must suck having a bunch of voices in your heard.” Katsuki says walking head of Izuku.
“Not really.” Izuku says then softly mummers, “I already know what that is like.”
Oh, good god I wanna hug this child.
The voice that speaks is a woman’s voice, so Izuku figures that is Shimura Nana. All Might’s master, Shigaraki Tomura’s grandmother, and the seventh One for All user.
A small smile appears on his face, as he is flattered that Nana wants to give him a hug.
Continuing their patrol, Izuku notices a young woman with [h/l], [h/c] hair, and [s/c] colored skin. The sight of his girl makes Izuku stop walking as he stares. Staring there is this sensation in his heart. He quickly figures out that this sensation is the result of one of the vestiges, but he can’t figure out which one.
[f/n]...?
So, it’s the first user causing this sensation in his heart. Izuku knows his voice the best because the dream he had before the fight between his class and class one B.
Isn’t that the name of your wife?
It is.
Didn’t she have a quirk canceler?
She did.
Then who is...?
Guys this could be her decedent.
Dont say that! You’re going to make him feel bad!
No, no! It’s okay, if that is her decedent then I’m glad she moved on.
Well why dont we go see for yourselves? Come on kiddo, go make her your friend.
Izuku wordlessly follows the woman to a park. She walks over to a bench and sits down. Izuku stops himself from walking over trying to figure out how to open a conversation with the woman. As he thinks, twiddling his thumbs, he doesn’t notice the woman is staring at him.
“Are you okay little hero?” The woman asks suddenly standing before him.
“Y-Yeah! I...I uh...yo-you looked lonely s-so I thought I’d come s-sit with you for a while.”
The woman giggles, “That’s so sweet of you. My name is Shigaraki [d/n]. What’s your name little hero?”
Shigaraki [d/n]?
Coincidence this lady has your last name?
Doubt it.
“Deku! My hero name is Deku it is nice to meet you Miss Shigaraki. S-Say you wouldn’t happen to know someone by the name of Shigaraki [insert the first user’s first name], would you?”
W-Wha-Why is he asking that!?
Clearly he hears us.
Yeah, but to ask that right off the bat is a little weird.
No, I think it’s a valid question when you know someone with the same last name.
“[insert the first user’s first name]? So that was his name.” [d/n] smiles.
“You know him?”
“Not personally, but my mother talked about him a lot. So see, [insert the first user’s first name] is my father’s name. Or at least that’s what mom always said.”
FATHER!?
Man is this one hell of a Wednesday!
[f/n]... S-Sh-She was... she...
Shiggy snap out of it!
“Whoa, really?!”
“Do you know him?” [d/n] asks.
“Kind of sorta.” Izuku admits. “If you dont mind me asking, what kind of stories did your mom tell you about him? All I know about him is that he was a man filled of justice and always did the right thing.”
“That’s what mom always said too. Why dont we sit and talk?” [d/n] suggests.
“Lead the why Miss Shigaraki!”
“Please, call me [d/n].”
“What kind of quirk do you have?”
“It’s a long life quirk. Which is really strange since my mother could cancel out quirks with her right hand and my dad had a quirk called One for All.” [d/n] explains.
“Wow!”
As [d/n] and Izuku sit on the park bench, [insert the first user’s first name] is still recovering from the shock of learning he has a daughter. It brings him to tears knowing that he left her when she was pregnant. He was such a horrible husband and [f/n] deserved so much better. Looking at this daughter through Izuku’s eyes he can easily see [f/n]. Hearing how [f/n] never dated or thought about remarrying hurts but at the same time he is glad that despite he was gone she remained faithful to him.
“So, are the rings you wear around your neck?”
“Hers? Yep! Before my dad left, he gave her his ring as a keepsake. Then when...she passed she gave me hers and his.” [d/n] answers with a smile.
[insert the first user’s first name] is breaking down in the vestige world hearing all of this.
“Deku are you okay?”
“Y-Yeah it’s just one of those days when you start crying for no reason.” Izuku lies.
“Had a few of those days myself.” [d/n] smiles. “Say, do you think my dad would have liked me?”
Izuku smiles brightly and says, “Yep! If he were here right now I know he would give you a big hug and tell you how much he loves you and how sorry he is for leaving.”
“Never said I was mad at him for leaving.” [d/n] chuckles. “I know that he had a had every intention of coming home. Deku,”
“Yeah?”
“If you ever fight All for One, knock his teeth out. His smile is creepy as hell.”
HAHA! She ain’t wrong.
Does she know that’s her uncle she’s talking about?
He has no right claiming to be her uncle.
“Yes ma’am!”

MHA Chapter 274
So I noticed something but I’m not sure of its significance yet.
Shigaraki can see One for All now. And when he looks out over the horizon he can spot a twinkling in the distance, signifying that that’s where the holder of OfA is.
Count how many lights there are: 9.
To me, this means that he’s seeing the 9 souls, or rather the essence, of the people who have possessed or currently possess OfA. Midoriya’s is the brightest as he’s the newest holder.
When Midoriya and Bakugou figure out that Shigaraki may be targeting Midoriya, they sprint away from the chaos to hopefully draw him away. Look at the next close up of the OfA.
The nine have condensed down to three. Two of the sparkles are moving in the same direction together. The brighter one is clearly Midoriya. The second one? Who else can it be but Bakugou? Why else would there be two moving together at the same time Midoriya and Bakugou are moving together? Unless it’s All Might who has been silently following Midoriya this whole time.
And there’s one sparkle that stays behind. Who could that be? Maybe that’s All Might? Maybe another secret possessor? Maybe a fellow classmate we all have theorized as being one of the users thanks to Midoriya’s vision? I don’t know. But the number of sparkles and the way they move must mean something.
Things are getting intense, people!

The thing about One for All is that it isn't good. I personally don't think it's necessarily evil but it's not good either. It's neutral. It's 200 years old, incredible powerful and has the one purpose. The purpose First breathed into it when he passed it on and added to it with his dying breath - defeat All for One. Yes AFO is evil and OFA wants to defeat him but that doesn't automatically make it GOOD. I don't think it actually cares that much who holds it so long as they have the spark
(Pt2)and the drive to follow through on the One Mission. The only reason it probably leans towards pure Good right now is that Nana, AM & now Zu have all used it to become Heroes and fight for good. The quirk itself is still just Neutral and probably willing to do whatever it takes to defeat AFO. The reason it doesn't stay with Baku is that it probably doesn't feel he had the spark or even inner feral darkness to follow through on that One Mission the way Zu does (and that I think AM has too)
OfA is like every other quirk ever: neither good nor bad. It’s a biological trait and tool, it lacks morality in and of itself.
Well, except that it’s sort of sentient, but the Ghosts are something between ‘sapient’ and ‘sentient’ and they also... aren’t the quirk in its whole. the super strength isn’t tied to them as much as their time holding it, and plenty of users have had the quirk without interacting with the Ghosts anyway.
Sort of like the Force, really. Funny how that ties together.
I agree that the Purpose the quirk is definitely to “stop afo”. I have two theories on why two of the users are in shadows- 1, that they do not approve of Izuku (or of the quirk continuing being passed on when they thought the Purpose was solved by All Might six years prior,) or 2- that they were villains, and are shunned by the other Ghosts that leaned more heroic in the one part of the quirk that the vestiges really have much control over. I mean, with nine users, what’s the chance that *every single time* the holder was a hero, really.
#also yes Baku failed the vibe check kjhghjk hes violent and a bit rancid but hes still not feral enough#his rage too close to the surface#ofa users need more rage and they need it boiling under#also yes yes. OfA as a quirk isn't wholly benevelont (see the bone breaky and murder) nor malevolent (see the advice giving ghosts and#the inclination to protect)#its eldricht! its not thinking along human morality lines#which is Fun tbh#onafreckledsunflower#pocket talks to people

How the hell does One for All work
so, we know that OfA is a quirk that can be passed down, that it was created through the merging of a quirk for stockpiling power and a quirk that let’s you pass the quirk to other people, and that it’s gone through eight generations so far.
and that may sound like a decent amount of information, but it’s still incredibly vague and I have so many questions.
Like, because OfA was created by the merging of two different quirks, does that mean that it would also merge with any quirk that the user already possess? I mean, why wouldn’t it? And in that case, does that mean that the previous users had abilities like generic super strength and super speed? Or is the power of OfA currently truly just the power of nine people all stacked together? If a OfA user does have a quirk before OfA, and the quirks do not merge together (even though I really think that they kinda should) then would the user’s original quirk be able to be strengthened by OfA? Actually no, scratch that- it shouldn’t be able to be strengthened by OfA. Because, it’s a stockpile of each individuals power, true, however the previous users did not all have the quirk that the current hypothetical user would have, and so their quirk would have no reason to get stronger, even when working together with OfA. And on an entirely new topic, why does it seem like OfA only affects speed and strength??? like, it’s the stockpile of power, but there’s more to power than just that. Why doesn’t it include things like eyesight, or hearing, or sense of smell? Intelligence?? If OfA is truly supposed to be the altogether power of everyone who has used it, why does it limit itself to speed and strength?
Conclusion: One for All makes no sense

Thank you responding to the AFO Vestige question. Assuming everything you said is true then the question that comes to my mind is why did AFO and the Dr waste so much time preparing Tomura and making sure he was worthy. They would had succeeded more completely if they just did the operation as quickly as possible. Also do you think that Tomura rejected AFO because he thought it was an illusion that he did not want to submit to, or because he rejects AFO in his enirtey? Have a good day.
I’m actually going to turn this question around and take it one step further. if AFO’s plan was to transfer his quirk all along, why didn’t he do it fifteen years ago? specifically, why did he choose the child Shimura Tenko as his vessel, rather than the already-grown Shimura Kotarou?
you see, this isn’t confirmed yet, but I suspect that the primary reason AFO decided to transfer his soul into a new body is because that’s essentially what his brother has been doing for the past nine generations, and AFO has hypothesized that that’s why his brother’s quirk has gotten stronger and stronger, to the point of him actually being able to put up a fight against him now. and so he applies the same logic to his own quirk, and figures that if it worked for his brother, it should work for him as well. we know that AFO believes his transfer into Tomura will enable him to finally steal OFA, but we don’t really know why he’s so confident of that. it wouldn’t surprise me if this is the reason why.
anyway, so if that’s the case, it would mean he’s had this plan for some time now, likely even before he was injured by All Might. this whole plan is basically based off of Quirk Singularity theory, and Ujiko confessed to Mic that he’s the one who originally came up with that concept -- right before he met AFO.
so it’s not too much of a stretch to assume that when AFO met Ujiko and heard his theories, that’s when he finally put two and two together that his brother’s quirk was becoming progressively stronger with each subsequent generation, while his own quirk -- powerful, but stuck at the comparatively weaker first-generation level -- was stagnating. it then stands to reason that this is when he first started putting the plan together to transfer his quirk into another body. not seven years ago, when All Might injured him, but decades before that. decades before All Might was even born.
after all, this is when he first started experimenting with the Noumu as well, researching how to prep another human’s body to be able to withstand multiple quirks. because it wouldn’t be enough to simply transfer his powers and be done with it; if Ujiko’s theories on the Singularity were correct, the transferred quirk would be exponentially more powerful, and so the new vessel would need to be able to withstand that. everything we know about the Noumu makes so much sense in hindsight if we look at it in the context of AFO researching how to create the perfect new vessel for his transferred, and upgraded, quirk.
but here’s the thing: if it is true that AFO started putting this plan into works years before he sustained his debilitating injury at All Might’s hands (and that does seem to be the case; Ujiko even said that AFO “foresaw his downfall”, which I interpret to mean that he knew he would eventually be outclassed by OFA if Quirk Singularity kept doing its thing), it’s all the more reason for me to believe that he fully intends to possess his “successor’s” body, rather than just going along for the ride. a healthy AFO would have absolutely no incentive to transfer his powers unless he was sure he would survive the process. that’s basically just suicide otherwise, and at the time he would have had no reason to desire that.
anyway. so if that’s true, it would also mean that when AFO tracked down Shimura Kotarou fifteen years ago, he likely already possessed the technology to transfer his quirk into Kotarou’s body if he wanted. this would have been only a year or so before Shirakumo’s death, and Kurogiri is an extremely advanced Noumu, indicating that their research had already progressed pretty far by this point. Kotarou is arguably just as good of a potential vessel as his son, and has the same devastating blood ties to Nana that AFO wants to use to torment All Might. he’s also fully grown, and AFO wouldn’t have to wait another 10-15 years in order for him to be old enough to possess. so why not??
and I think the answer to this question is the same as the answer to the other question of “why did he wait so long to transfer his quirk to Tomura”: because they weren’t ready yet. because AFO needed a perfect vessel, and the technology wasn’t read yet. they hadn’t reached a point where they knew the transfer would be safe. they hadn’t reached the point where they could reliably ensure that the new body would be able to withstand the quirk (hell, we’re seeing some problems with that now). they hadn’t yet gathered all the quirks they wanted, such as the regeneration quirk. they needed more time. and so AFO chose to kill Kotarou -- or rather, have Tenko kill him -- and take Tenko under his wing instead.
again, Tenko was “adopted” by AFO more than fifteen years ago -- before AFO was injured by All Might. and yet he went ahead with his plans to raise Tenko as his perfect little All Might-hating heir anyway. this means that whatever AFO’s ultimate plan is with Tenko, it’s something that was concocted before he was injured. or in other words, before he would have had any incentive to willingly sacrifice himself in favor of ~selflessly~ turning the reins over to his heir. he was putting in the time to raise Tomura up as his successor before he had any reason to. if all he wanted was a new body, he could have just locked the kid up for a decade or so until the transfer process was finally ready to go. so it must be more than that.
so I have a few stray thoughts/theories on this. first things first, AFO just really likes to fuck with people. remember that he in essence created OFA to begin with because it wasn’t enough for him to simply defeat his bro; he wanted to subjugate him. he wanted that decisive victory over him, mental as well as physical. for him, the psychological aspect of the victory is just as important. and so I think that part of him putting Tenko through all of this torment and raising him up into the perfect homicidal pawn was purely just to torture All Might and Nana and all the rest of the OFA users, because AFO is just kind of fucked up like that you guys.
second, is that as we’ve seen with OFA, even when one of the souls does have predominant control, it doesn’t mean the other souls just disappear completely. they’re still there in the background, and they’re still capable of influencing the user’s body, and possibly even wresting control. hell, we’re seeing this happen right now. if AFO can possess Tomura’s body, it’s reasonable to assume that if the situation were reversed and AFO had control, Tomura could still try to fight back as well. and so presumably, it would be much more desirable if Tomura was inclined to be cooperative with AFO, much as the OFA vestiges all get along with Deku. if you’re gonna invite a roommate to come share space in your brain -- possibly for the rest of all eternity -- better get one you’re sure you can live with, right?
and there are a bunch of other reasons I can think of; I’m just gonna list the rest of them real quick so we can wrap this up:
Ujiko says in chapter 222 that Tomura is “weak” and needs to prove himself. it could be that this was his way of setting up Tomura to “train” with Machia for a few months so as to gain the physical and mental fortitude to be able to withstand the four-month Noumufication process.
it could also be that he wanted Tomura to amass a loyal following in much the same way that AFO had before him, as a lot of AFO’s power came from the number of people who were loyal to him and/or feared him.
lastly, it could just be AFO playing the long game once again, seeing as his ultimate goal is to steal OFA back from its current bearer. OFA, which contains his brother’s soul along with all of the other bearers’ souls. (why he thinks this would be a good idea is beyond me btw, but that’s another topic for another post lmao.) and at that point Tomura’s soul will be reunited with Nana’s. except he can’t even allow them that little bit of peace, because he’s such a spiteful, miserable fuck. so he’s made it so that if they are reunited, either Tomura will hate Nana, or else alternatively he’ll be so torn over all of the evil shit he’s done that he still won’t be able to reconcile with her even if he wants to. but the point is, either way, AFO wins! because everyone is miserable except for him. :’)
anyway, so this is all conjecture; it’s possible there’s some other reason I haven’t thought of, and it’s also possible that I’m wrong about all of this, of course. my read of AFO’s character is that he’s too selfish to ever step back and let someone else have all the glory while all he can do is watch. everything about AFO -- his quirk, his name even -- is defined by selfishness, in stark contrast to OFA and its users’ selflessness. and so I’ve always believed that AFO would be the final villain somehow, so as a result my theories are all colored by this belief. but it’s possible I’ve misread the character or Horikoshi’s intentions, and that Tomura is in fact the final villain, in which case it remains to be seen exactly what is going on with AFO and all his psychic bullshit then lol.
but if not, then this is my best guess. and as for why Tomura rejected AFO, he said it himself; he believes he’s outgrown AFO and now wants to surpass him. AFO and Ujiko’s plans to make him self-actualized worked a little too well, maybe. or maybe not, and this is still playing into AFO’s hands in some other way I haven’t figured out yet. I honestly don’t know for sure. but I am fairly certain that by the time this arc ends, we’ll have a much better idea.

BnHA Bonus Rant # 5: All for One for All
Okay guys, so ever since I first read chapter 217, I’ve been thinking about certain One for All things and going “hmm” a bunch. Like so:
hmmm.
hmmm.
hmmmmmmmmm.
And like. I’ve had these bits and pieces of some kind of theory for a while now, and I think I’m finally ready to try and put them together.
So I’m gonna try to make this as straightforward as possible. First off, here’s the “official” story as far as we have been told:
AFO steals a “power-stockpiling” quirk from User X and gives it to his brother (henceforth referred to as Lil Bro).
The power-stockpiling quirk fuses together with Lil Bro’s own latent quirk, which happens to be a passing-down quirk similar to All for One.
The newly created quirk, One for All, allows the user to stockpile power within the quirk and then pass the quirk on to a new user, who in turn can then pass it on to another user, and then another, etc., all the while accumulating more and more power.
Fast-forward a century or two. All Might, the eighth user of OFA, passes the quirk down to a new successor, Midoriya Izuku. Izuku eventually becomes the first user to unlock another secret power hidden within OFA this whole time -- the ability to use the past users’ quirks.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Anyway, so that’s basically it. This is what we’ve been led to believe up till this point.
So now, here’s my alternate take.
AFO steals what he believes to be a minor strength-enhancing quirk from User X. However, upon stealing it, he realizes he’s fallen victim to one of the classic blunders: namely, that if a quirk relies on some kind of “stockpiled resource” so to speak, he can only steal the quirk itself, and not said resource along with it. Much like another quirk-copier we know of:
So now AFO is stuck with some useless quirk that does fuckall for him, and wondering what to do with it. And then a light bulb goes off in his head. Of course! He has an annoyingly rebellious brother he’s been meaning to try and persuade to see things his way... by force, if necessary.
He doesn’t want to give his brother anything too strong, of course. Ostensibly out of kindness and concern for Lil Bro’s fragile state, but in reality he probably just didn’t want him to ever be able to oppose him.
But a quirk like this? One that doesn’t actually do anything? That’s pretty much perfect. He can force his brother to submit to him without ever granting him any actual power. So he gives Lil Bro this supposedly useless quirk, thinking that this is the moment when he’ll finally succeed in getting his brother to join him.
But instead, two things happen which AFO did not expect. Two things which, quite unknown to him, will ultimately work to seal his doom.
Let’s backtrack for a sec and examine just what that power-stockpiling quirk is. It’s actually pretty powerful stuff! Basically it seems like it gradually stores up someone’s power over time and then lets them use that accumulated power in bursts.
But as we now know thanks to Deku, that’s not all that it stores up.
Okay, so now just… hear me out.
All for One steals User X’s quirk. Unbeknownst to AFO, upon being stolen, said quirk immediately goes to work doing what it’s been designed to do: stockpiling the power of its current user. It no longer has the accumulated power of User X, because as we made note of earlier, power can’t be transferred through that method. It is, however, still a perfectly fine quirk, and it’s got a new user now. And so as far as the quirk is concerned, it’s back to business as usual. It’s accumulating power once again, this time from a new wielder: All for One.
So that is Thing # 1 That All For One Does Not Expect.
And here’s Thing # 2.
Like I said -- you can’t transfer accumulated power through stealing or copying or otherwise duplicating someone else’s quirk. For whatever reason, it just can’t be done.
But.
A WILD LOOPHOLE APPEARS ohhhhhh shit.
Listen, I don’t know why this is, but it is, though. We already know; we’ve seen it in action. One for All can be transferred from user to user with its power bundled in free of charge. It’s the only quirk we’ve seen thus far that’s capable of doing that. It is possibly unique in this. But it only works if the user wills the power to be transferred. Otherwise it will not happen. And All for One, in his arrogance and hubris, did in fact willingly grant this power to his younger brother.
So here, finally, is what I’ve been trying to get at. I don’t think Lil Bro actually ever had a quirk after all. I think our boy really was quirkless. That passing-down quirk he supposedly had? The one that supposedly fused together with the power-stockpiling quirk to create One for All?
Well, I think said fusion actually took place when AFO was still in possession of the quirk. In other words, I think One for All actually is All for One.
We have a quirk that stockpiles its users’ power and “quirk factors.” All for One was in possession of that quirk. It stockpiled his power. It stockpiled his quirk. And then without realizing it, he passed that power on to his younger brother. The quirk, along with whatever power it had accumulated from him.
One for All is literally All for One. The power to grant quirks from one person to another comes directly from AFO’s power. No other quirk has the ability to do that. We have copy abilities and shapeshifting abilities and clone abilities, and all of these are capable of duplicating others’ quirks to some extent. But none of these powers is capable of granting quirks to other people. The only abilities we have seen that are capable of that are One for All, and All for One. That’s not a coincidence.
Know what else isn’t a coincidence? The fact that Deku all of a sudden possesses multiple quirks. Not temporarily, but permanently and with no apparent restrictions other than his own ability and stamina. Again, that’s a power we’ve only seen in the hands of one other individual before now.
Yeeeeeeeeah.
So yeah. That’s my theory. This entire time, One for All has not actually been an “offshoot” of All for One, but is in fact All for One itself. And AFO has, ironically, been the originator of OFA this whole time. He is the first wielder of OFA. His brother is the second.
Oh hey wait, yeah. So about that. You know how All Might has been really fucking reluctant to bring up the topic of All for One, even now that he’s finally been ~defeated~ and locked up in Tartarus? Like, remember that one panel I was going “hmmmm” at earlier? “I didn’t want to raise that point…”
Well I think that might be because...
Which would mean... well...
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah.
So yeah, Deku. Hate to break it to you kid, but you might in fact have a certified evil dude currently taking up residence in that big ol’ hero brain of yours.
“But makeste,” you point out, “we’ve already seen the other vestiges and none of them look like AFO, and also there are only eight of them and if AFO was included, wouldn’t that make it nine?” All of which are good points which I will acknowledge. But in turn please consider:
(1) AFO has a gazillion quirks, including at least one that’s capable of altering his physical body and appearance (namely, whatever de-aging quirk he’s using). He could be invisible. He could be in disguise. He could in fact even be in disguise as a certain explosive boy whom Deku instinctively trusts! That one’s a bit out there, I admit, but frankly all of the theories related to That Silhouette are pretty out there so I’m willing to roll with it. But my point is basically that there are lots of possibilities here.
And (2), we don’t actually know jack shit about the past users of OFA. We only know Deku is the ninth because each user apparently kept count, because at least they were capable of doing that much. But All Might doesn’t know anything about any of the users prior to number six (whom he only had a vague description of, not even a name), so at some point all of that history was lost. It’s possible that they were keeping track of it but then Shimura or someone else purposely destroyed the information and didn’t pass it along to Toshinori in order to keep the other predecessors’ families safe. She gave up her own family for the same reason, so it wouldn’t be much of a stretch.
But my point being, we don’t actually know that there were in fact eight users following Lil Bro. There may well have only been seven, and they just assumed there were eight because everyone caught at least a vague glimpse of the Vestiges once or twice during their time, and they all counted a certain number of people, and so they assumed (quite correctly) that that’s how many past generations of OFA there were. Their only mistake was thinking that Lil Bro was the first, rather than the second.
What else. -- Oh, the thing with OFA being passed down via DNA transfer rather than by touch can probably be handwaved, tbh. That may have been because Lil Bro only received a little bit of AFO’s power and not the full-blown deal initially. Or it could just be that since saying “here, eat my hair” did work, they never thought to question whether it could be passed down via other methods too. But in either case, it may well be that Deku is capable of doing the touch thing and much more now that AFO has been churning about deep within OFA’s core for a couple centuries, and has, just like the other quirks, gradually been growing stronger this whole time. It may well be that All for One 2.0, Version: Deku is finally ready to rumble.
And if so? If he is? Well then that may just be the perfect solution to this whole damn mess. How do you stop a villain with unlimited power? Particularly if he does finally obtain a healing factor quirk at some point in the game and is restored to his former glory? There’s really only one way I can think of: give him a taste of his own medicine. Fire Lord Ozai style. Set a thief to catch a thief. Poetic fucking justice.
So that’s about it, I think. This is my current theory about OFA and AFO. This also means that, just in time for Father’s Day, I’m now pretty sure that AFO is not in fact actually Deku’s dad (and I may possibly owe @addermoray a beer). Or at least, the one theory probably isn’t true if the other is. So yeah, congratulations Deku, you get to pass on all of the I’m-secretly-the-son-of-my-greatest-nemesis angst after all! In exchange, you get my-greatest-nemesis-is-currently-inhabiting-part-of-my-soul angst instead. Heh. Have fun with that there, kiddo.
