"Nina!" Keo calls out as he quickens his pace to catch up to her, gaining on her before she had a chance to slip out of his eyeline and away from a conversation he feels like neither of them want to have but neither can avoid.

"Slow down. I need you to tell me what the hell is going on."

He has an inkling from what he had overheard when he had last been at his mom's, but the woman had been a vault since and the only other source he could implore for answers was his cousin.

"You might be onto something with that shit," Uly agrees, lowering himself down to sit on the ground next to her rather than straightening back up once he had taken ownership of her cigarette. It was a fear of his that lived far beneath the surface and a question he didn't want answered.

He ponders the same as he inhales a drag, prepared to conform to whatever state of being Nina wanted to be in. Silence or conversation, he would hang out and engage in either until she was ready to get up with him.

"You thinking about all that shit with your mom or is this an unrelated park time out?"

"The grass isn't greener on the other side, Uly." Nina takes a deep inhale through her nose, and an exhale to follow. While she agree with his evaluation this town walked around their Norman Rockwell white picket fences up their asses, achieving the teenage dream of escaping the home town didn't ensure getting away from these type of people. "It's fucked here, it's fucked everywhere..."

Little Nina had once hoped the grass would be greener here in Aurora Bay.

The blonde allows the familiar friend to pluck the cigarette from out of her hand, returning it down to her side, gazing back up at the sky once more. She couldn't see the sky this clearly growing up in Los Angeles, the light pollution suffocating any natural beauty left in that god forsaken city.

A bout of humoured air escapes her nostrils, before patting the space of concrete next to her. "Misery loves company." Nina had neither the drive nor desire to stand up and return to the real world, happily soothed by the sound of waves in the distance in the midst of her drunken stupor.

ABOUT

Jared was the result of a sordid love affair that occured over the summer of 1993. His father had come over to the States on a gap year, and had ended up crossing paths with his mother whilst perusing Aurora Bay as a last stop. It was a crazy romance that ended with his return to Marseille, France, and her pregnant with a baby boy.

Jared didn't grow up knowing much of his father, he'd receive postcards and letters, but Adrien had only ever visited a handful of times. The last being when he was just ten years old. It wasn't until he was older and able to gain his own income, that he was able to seek out his father in France and rekindle their connection. However, it was a long journey to get to that.

Jared wasn't the smartest kid in school, and took on the role as a typical jock. He was more interested in American Football than adding numbers or finding out about history of the world. He had the outlook that he didn't need to know that stuff when he'd be playing in the Super Bowl.

He was considered an 'asshole' in high school, except he had the armor of being one of the school's top athletes for it to be allowed to slide. He never intentionally meant to come across that way, but he was sarcastic in nature and a joker at times, he never wanted to take life too seriously and would openly act frivolous around those stressing about grades and exams, and being unable to relate.

When he was on the field, he'd be often on the hood of his car smoking a joint, or out on the beach, surfing the waves. If he had to pick, his love of the water came before his love of the game. Although, as it was reminded to him by his peers, a surfboard wouldn't get him into college, unless he wanted to become a labelled professional - which, in his eyes, would have taken all the fun out of it for him. He didn't want his escape to become a chore.

At home, Jared always felt overlooked by his mother. Perhaps, it was due to her lifestyle and the excessive amount of children coming and going all the time. But he rarely stayed in the house, unless it was a requirement, to watch his siblings, etcerea. He was very protective of them though, and would often try and act like a second father sometimes, rather than an annoying brother. He'd always look out for them, and make sure their needs were met, and that they were never overlooked.

Somehow, he got through high school (with the help of some more intelligent and driven kids) and was able to earn himself a scholarship to UC, Berkeley to play for the California Golden Bears. There was no way he'd be going anywhere on his just average grades.

He decided to major in the Spieker Undergraduate Business Program, because nothing else even remotely interested him. It was through this that he learned basically that he could make himself a lot of money, with very little effort - if he played the game right.

His dreams of playing in the Super Bowl started to fade, and American Football became more of a past time, as he became invested in learning about what he could business and management-related. Jared Taylor, CEO, had a nice ring to it.

He invited his father to his graduation, but he never attended - neither did his mother, and he likes to believe that perhaps she was busy or simply forgetful, having her hands full with his siblings. Although, he often thinks about how he'd marked it on the family calendar, drawing circles around the date in red biro.

Jared returned to Aurora Bay, and couldn't bare to live back in that overcrowded house with his mother and siblings. He got himself a job through a Graduate scheme over Culver City, California, and saved up enough to be able to buy a rundown house in Seabrook Quarter, Aurora Bay. He slowly started to gut the place and do it up himself, very slowly, with every paycheck going on something new each month for the house.

Eventually, when he was settled, he noticed the old Surf Shack had gone up for sale. He so desperately wanted to get back into his surfing, and wondered if it was time to put his business degree to use. After much deliberation, he purchased the building and rebranded it as Surf's Up.

He's a fairly laid back owner, and he trusts those he hires to do their jobs, but also come to him with any issues. He sees his employees as family and nothing less, he'd fight to the death for them as he would his own siblings.

Jay leans his arms down against the surface of the bar, his gaze shifting up toward the bartender. He lifts a few fingers to let the bartender know he'll also get another drink. He brushes his tongue along his lower lip as he tilts his head down to look at his arms. He's not sure whether to look at her or not because looking at her always ends up with the two of them going home with one another and then it's back to whatever this was.

"What about what? You being here with someone?" He shrugs. "I was just making small talk, Nina. You don't have to get defensive about it," was she really defensive? No. But it felt better to say.

God, did Jay always have that perpetual look of perturbation? Maybe she caught him on a bad day, however it was getting hard to distinguish when exactly they were. "I'll alert the press." After a momentary roll of her eye's, and an aimless flick of her hand into the air, the piercing motions over to the bartender for a drink of her own.

Resting her elbows on the countertop, Nina doesn't like the way he turns away from her even when engaging in conversation. "No?" A girl didn't always need a person with them to enjoy a drink, but whatever. "What about it?"
