“Regulus black is pronounced dead after his disappearance 6 months ago in october. authorities at the ministry say that it is very unlikely that Black’s case will be reopened due to the many disappearances that have taken place in recent years.” A smile tugged at the corner of James’ lips as he picked up a particularly ripe looking tomato and set it in his basket. the witch on the radio continued. “Regulus Black’s death now leaves the noble and ancient house of Black without an heir as Walburga Black continues to age and her husband Orion passed away last year. Walburga was not available for comment on her son’s death.”

James pulled open the door to his muggle flat and gently set the grocery bags on the kitchen counter as he slipped off his shoes and set a bouquet of flowers down as he opened a cabinet to look for a vase.

Sirius and Remus would be over soon to celebrate once they got through Moody’s extensive security.

Ok, jokes aside - let me tell you something about fandoms and fanfiction, based both in statistics and my own experience.

It always stays longer when there was tragedy.

It stays even longer when there was unrealized potential.

Look. Good Omens became the top ship on ao3 this year, after an emotionally devastating finale and despite being on number 19 last year. It gained almost fifteen THOUSAND new fics. Fans took to that ending like a goose to biting people and wrote fic until their fingers bled.

The BBC Merlin fandom has been alive and well and producing a bunch of fic for fifteen years, despite the show being... mediocre, the ending being a tragedy and the original premise never being fulfilled. Theres a constant stream of "Alternate universe - canon divergence" fics, half of them much better than the canon material.

I personally stayed in and created for a different fandom for years *because* the ending was shit. None of what I wrote was especially good but I was obsessed with all of it.

(theres more examples than just these few shows, but these fandoms are the ones ive been in the longest and have experienced this the hardest with. Id hazard a guess that the marauders fandom works similarly, though theres other components there as well that I wont get into)

The thing is, we love to say that we hate the ending or the plotholes but we kind of stay for them. We want to fix whats been done wrong (sometimes because the creators were stupid, sometimes because the story isnt finished, sometimes just because we didnt like it personally) or at least want to read how others fix it for us. And I might offend a few people with this, but we kind of also stay for the pain. We like having something to complain and bitch about that isnt real life, amirite?

Dead Boy Detectives doesnt exactly have a tragic ending but there are definitely untied strings all over the place (Niko, Edwin and Charles relationship, etc.) that fans really really wanted to see. Theres also the fact that Netflix wasted a ginormous amount of potential for more stories (cases, that we get to make up ourselves now) by just throwing away possible seasons. And lastly the fanbase as far as I can see is insanely dedicated, as well as Mad (with a capital M) at Netflix for being the dickheads that they are. So I can definitely see this fandom persevering for years.

Guys, you know, my biggest fear is that the fandom will fall apart now and everyone will go to other fandoms. Everyone's hyperfixation will end and there will be nothing left... I don't want this fandom to fall apart because I don't know where to go after this and I don't want to leave this fandom, I don't want to lose all the love that I have for this show and I'm just afraid that one day I will wake up and realize that I don't feel anything here anymore 💔

Destined - Word count: 211 - Evan and Regulus friendship angst

Regulus made it halfway up to the astronomy tower before he broke down. It was sorta poetic honestly, spiraling on a spiral staircase. Sobs racked his body, his lungs hurt. It was Sirius’ birthday and he couldn’t even work up the courage to walk across the great hall and give him a gift, his own brother. Instead he’d spent the entire day watching Remus Lupin smile at him, Peter Pettigrew laugh too loudly at his jokes, and James Potter pat him on the back, his replacement Sirius’ new brother.

He stayed there on the staircase for what felt like hours until Evan found him, puffy eyed and still sniffling. He hated looking weak but Evan had seen him worse. Evan was always there. He'd been there when Sirius turned eleven and left for Hogwarts, he’d been there when Sirius ran away, and when Regulus found out Sirius had been adopted by the Potters. And here he was again. Sitting next to Regulus, rubbing his back slowly, not saying a word, not judging him. Because that’s who he was who he’d always been. Sirius may have been destined to live out in the sun, but Evan and Regulus were made for the depths below, they were drowning but they were drowning together.

STORY TIME: Okay, so a couple of years ago i took a 3 month hiatus in the middle of reading Order of the Phoenix because I didn't want to make myself upset over Sirius dying... The same thing has happened here just with other plot points.

I have now realised that this chapter is named after what Remus wrote on the floor in the shrieking shack—which google translated for me to 'defying or opposing everyone else'—so I've put my keen and penetrating mind to the task and, unlike usual, come to a probably correct conclusion... this is a Remus centric chapter.

"He laughed easily and frequently..." is such a nice little description. Especially for five year old Remus and it is upsetting.

A wedding! I love weddings! Drinks all around!

Unfortunately for Lily, Mrs. Evans, Ira the Cat, and anyone who happened upon the Evans house at that time, Petunia's bridal mania was far-reaching and unstoppable.

Omg, Mrs. Evans is called Edie! I like it :) Petunia and her pals are so rude. I... don't know why I am surprised. What I am shocked about is the hints on what's going on with Maid Of Honour Yvonne though!

Oh, Lily's owl is called Niko. I think this is the first time he's been mentioned.

JAMES WROTE HER A TWO PAGE LONG LETTER!!!

This—the owl—is Elizabeth the Second, named for the Lady on the muggle money. My old owl has gone into retirement after an unfortunate run in with my Gran's cat Bertram. It seems that was one cat attack too many, and he now refuses to carry mail.

-- of course she is. I love the way James writes letters and also just how people in general write the temperament of owls in fic because it really makes me laugh that they have such an attitude all the time.

First mention of everyones favourite cousin, Sam! Do we get the story of the "Hopefully with a little more than twenty minutes advance notice..." thing that James is talking about in his letter? Hm.

Have you seen anything of You-Know-Who? Not Voldemort. Snape. He lives near you, isn't that right? Petey thinks I shouldn't ask because it's a sore subject. As if "tact" has ever been my style.

Narcissa Black has entered the building!!!!! I don't remember this interaction between her and Sirius in the Leaky Cauldron at all. Narcissa actually speaks to him and her voice is described as being "strange—forceful and a bit defiant" and I love how complex people write Narcissa's character—

"It's not too late, Sirius interrupted. "It isn't too late for you, Cissy."

Narcissa took one step forward and opened her mouth to say something. For a moment, there was emotion in her eyes and sincerity in her expression. And then she froze up again.

It is a turbulent time for the Marauders—

"Right, because the fact that you're a wolf one night a month means you have to be a lifeless, pretentious prick for the rest of the time.

-- very turbulent indeed. That was James that said that to Remus.... oof.

"Soyez bienvenus à ma maison."

Lily raised her eyebrows, and Sirius opened the door.

"Welcome," he modified.

The scene with Remus and his mum talking about his lycanthropy is so good but so sad even though it is so short :(

It's the wee off-hand comments that are just peppered in that indicate they are thinking about the other or something that just makes me--

-- I think its quite a nice touch to have Remus be November when he's watching the moon. How the thing that changed his life for the worse in a way, is also the thing that helps him figures things out? How deep, me.

I don't know why I picture every single character in my head as short. None of them are fully grown but they look like adults. I don't know why this is it really bothers me.

It wasn't there yet, but the moon had set (the worst of it was over), and the sky was growing pale (optimistic), and soon (pretty soon), the sun would be up.

Barty sat fully clothed in the bathtub, the loud sounds of the overhead shower soaking his clothes and trying and failing to drown out his thoughts. He wasn’t sure how he’d expected this time to be any different. It was always the same. He really should give up on this whole love thing.

The shower shut off abruptly startling Barty out of his thoughts and unseeing stare. Evan plopped himself down on the floor next to the bathtub two containers of ice cream held in one arm and two spoons in hand, he used his free hand to hold one of the ice cream tubs and a spoon out to Barty.

“rough night?” Evan’s tone was casual, conversational, not demanding for Barty to tell him everything just giving him the option.

Barty took a few bites of his ice cream, strawberry, his favorite, before he spoke. “he dumped me” he stabbed his ice cream a little agressively with his spoon “said I was ‘too much’ and he ‘didn’t have the energy to deal with me’ whatever that means.”

Evan didn’t say anything just nodded softly so Barty continued

“The asshole didn’t even have the decency to do it somewhere private. He did it right there in the restaurant and left me with the bill.” Barty scowled at his knees pulling them up closer to his chest as he picked at the rips in his jeans.

Evan frowned at that “Bitch.”

“I know!! and he had audacity to keep my fucking hoodie!” Barty stabbed aggressively at his ice cream again

“I’m pretty sure that was my hoodie actually-“

Barty snorted “that hoodie stopped being yours the second you left it in my room”

Evan laughed, it was sweet and soft and for a while Barty laughed too. they both trailed off after a few minutes and the bathroom was quiet again

“I really thought he liked me this time” Barty whispered, dropping his head onto Evan’s shoulder, his still wet hair soaking Evan’s shirt Evan didn’t seem to mind. He just reached over and rubbed Barty’s back. Silence fell again but it was comforting this time.

“wanna go order a pizza, watch old disney movies and talk shit about him till you feel better?”

Barty laughed “hell yes”

And as they curled up on the couch in their shared apartment, the scent of one of Evan’s hoodies and Evan’s mint chocolate chip breath filling his nose. Barty thought maybe he would be okay because he was never too much for Evan, Evan always stayed.

Sirius was having a nightmare again. It seemed like he was always having those nowadays ever since he’d left Regulus in that house, even if he had his brother back now he couldn’t shake the fear, the guilt.

He was huddled in a corner of the kitchen shielding regulus from view as best he could as their faceless mother screamed. flashes of light bounced around the room

“SELFISH. UNGRATEFUL. DISGUSTING CHILD.” she howled every word punctuated by a flash of light.

Each spell missed, her focus disrupted by her anger, eyes wild with rage. Usually she was quiet when she was angry, cold, steely, and cruel. Tonight was different, tonight was red hot and desperate. Another flash of light and he was struck by searing pain, his vision went white hot. Someone screamed he couldn’t tell if it was him or Regulus. there was nothing but pain. endless unbearable pain.

his eyes flew open and he sat up straight, cold sweat dripping down his neck and back. Sirius drew in a shaky breath and pulled his knees up against his chest. He was in the Potter’s house, Regulus was just down the hall, they were safe, they were fine. Despite the fact that he knew his brother was fast asleep and completely safe, Sirius pulled back the covers and slipped out of bed tiptoeing out of his room and down the empty hall. Regulus’ door creaked open quietly and there he was, in bed with James curled around him smiling softly in his sleep, Sirius smiled too. He eased shut the door and stood there, one hand on the doorknob.

“Pads?” Sirius jumped Remus had somehow managed to silently creep out of his room into the hallway

“Jesus christ moony-“ Sirius hissed just above a whisper “what the hell are you doing up?”

Remus raised an eyebrow “I have a better question, why did I wake up at two in the fucking morning to you blundering down the hallway?” Remus didn’t look annoyed, just concerned.

Damn his incredibly pretty best friend and his extra sensitive werewolf senses. “Just checking on Reg and Prongs, someone had to make sure they were keeping it pg” Sirius forced a grin but it didn’t do much to hide the way his bloodshot eyes avoided his friend’s gaze.

“Another nightmare?” Remus asked softly it wasn’t really a question he already knew the answer but sirius nodded anyway. “wanna sleep with me tonight?”

“yes please-“ his voice was barely above a whisper but Remus seemed to hear him loud and clear.

Sirius followed Remus into his bedroom and slipped into bed next to him. He felt so small and weak in the big bed like he was sinking into the mattress and it would swallow him whole, then strong arms wrapped around him and the feeling evaporated. He buried his head in Remus’ chest and Remus ran his fingers through Sirius’ dark curls.

“Do you wanna talk about it?” Remus asked softly it wasn’t demanding, it wasn’t required, it was a simple invitation, and it meant the world to Sirius.

Sirius shook his head gently

“You didn’t deserve it, Pads, whatever she did, neither of you deserved that.” Sirius’ bloodshot eyes were becoming glossy with tears again.

Sirius just buried his face deeper into Remus’ sweater and Remus’ free hand began tracing stars on his back. It calmed him and his eyes began to flutter as Remus whispered comforting words to him that contrasted the screams he’d woken up to. He drifted off to sleep in the arms of his best friend and the boy he loved.

Christmas at the Potter’s - word count: 673 - merry fucking christmas to everyone who celebrates and big hugs to everyone who’s holiday experience has sucked because of family

It was James’ idea. Why must James Potter be bane of his existence first stealing the heart of his best friend and then having the audacity to be nice to Evan and him as well? Barty did not under any circumstances like James Potter. Ever. But now sitting in the Potters’ living room squished between Regulus and a very Sleepy Evan, maybe Barty liked James a Little bit, But only because the couch was so crowded that Evan was partly in his lap and had his head resting on Barty’s shoulder.

James’ grand scheme began one night in the slytherin dorms a week before christmas holidays,

James propped himself up on his elbows and looked up at his boyfriend excitedly “Reg if i turn into prongs would you charm my nose to glow red so i’d look like Rudolph?”

“So you'd look like who?” Regulus looked somewhere between wildly perplexed and mildly entertained.

“like the reindeer- ya know the one with the red nose?”

Evan glanced over from his bed where’d he’d been writing an essay “why on earth would a reindeer have a red nose?”

“He pulls Santa’s sleigh- ya know to bring the presents?” James was looking increasingly more distressed.

Barty sat up from his place next to Evan and asked the question that pushed James over the edge “Who the bloody fuck is Santa?”

what followed was the most chaotic description of Christmas Barty had ever heard after which James realized not a single one of the slytherin boys in the room had ever experienced a proper Christmas.

Less than two days later James plopped down at the slytherin table next to Regulus much to the confusion of most of the contents of the great hall and declared “It’s done!”

all three boys stared at him blankly but Regulus was the first to speak “what’s done-“

James beamed “You’re all coming to mine for Christmas this year! I’ve already asked mum and told Sirius and Remus and Peter and… what?” as if he had just registered how absolutely confuzzled they all looked.

So here Barty was crammed on a couch with Remus, Sirius, Peter, James, Regulus and Evan, his best friend who he definitely did not have a Crush on. Remus, his favorite of the Gryffindors, kept shooting him knowing looks and he was Rapidly dropping down in Barty’s ranking of everyone squished onto the crowded couch at the moment. Barty just glared back at him. Honestly He thought Evan was asleep until elbow jabbed painfully into his ribs and he looked over to see Evan's terrifyingly unreadable Hazel eyes.

then the dazzlingly beautiful blonde had the bloody audacity to smirk at him and push a small perfectly wrapped gift into his hands “merry christmas Bee”

Barty eagerly ripped away the perfect emerald green paper and opened the small box it had encased, the box contained a small oval locket and within that was a picture of him and Evan taken sometime during the summer before 5th year Barty had one an arm draped around Evan and they both wore lazy content smiles Barty remembered that moment it had been perfect he’d prayed it would never end. Bartys face went red and the butterflies that followed could be more accurately described as a rabid raccoon clawing at the walls of his stomach. Barty opened his mouth to thank Evan to say anything but nothing came out, a few minutes of silence later in which Barty was painfully aware of the way Evan was smirking at him he managed to form a complete sentence

“merry christmas Ev” he shoved his messily wrapped gift into Evan's hands unceremoniously and looked anywhere but Evan. Said target of his unfortunately placed affections slowly unwrapped the gift careful not to rip the delicate navy paper, and held up a pretty beaded bracelet Barty has made himself detailed with a silver rose charm. Evan didn’t say anything, just slipped the bracelet on his wrist and curled back up against Barty.

God he was gonna kill James.

“She loves me.”

“Reg please-“ Sirius was begging him to go, pleading but Regulus was just staring numbling.

“You don’t have to leave” Regulus felt strangely calm at this moment. He should be frantic. He should be trying to convince his brother to stay but he doesn’t have it in him anymore he knows his words are empty.

“You know I can’t stay Reg” Sirius looks exhausted like he’s caving in on himself he’s covered in bruises and his own blood. Regulus should be angry at his mother. He should feel something but he just feels cold and empty. “Please come with me you don’t have to stay here you could come to the Potters and-“

“She loves me Sirius.” and then Sirius is gone just like everything else he’s ever loved. Everything except his mother.

“She loves me, she loves me, she loves me-” He’s rocking himself back and forth on the dusty floor of one of the manor’s broom closets.

“REGULUS ARCTURUS BLACK” a loud bang sounds from somewhere down stairs

“She loves me, she loves me, she loves me-“ his voice grows more desperate the louder his mother gets. There's another loud bang much closer this time.

“DESPICABLE USELESS BOY”

“She loves me, she loves me, she loves me-“ his breath coming out in gasps as the door flies open and harsh light comes pouring into the small space. She loves me, she loves me, she loves me- he thinks as the searing pain hits him.

She's never loved him, not really. He knows that deep down, yet he still can’t leave her; he can't lose the only constant in his life, so instead as the pain consumes him he begs his mind to believe She loves me.

Barty hated christmas. He’d hated it since the first christmas he’d spent alone in that house, and he’d hated it more every year since.

But now leaning against Evan as he read, a blanket wrapped around them both, listening to corny as fuck christmas music, maybe he didn’t hate it quite so much.

“I need out.”

Sirius remembered the fights, he remembered the screaming, the curses, and god he remembered the pain. He remembered the “Reggie come with me” he couldn’t bring himself to say. He remembered the betrayal on his brother’s face when he walked out that door. It kept him up or filled his nightmares when he managed to sleep, there was no escape from the guilt, James had said it wasn’t his fault, and somewhere deep down Sirius knew he was right, but that didn’t erase the face of his terrified little brother as he walked out the door promising to never come back, it was burned into his brain he couldn’t escape it.

But now here Regulus sat in the his dorm room sitting on James’ bed squeezing James’ hand, face tear stained, shiney eyes staring straight at Sirius as he said

“I want to get out, I want to leave. Please help me leave.”

This time Sirius wasn’t leaving his little brother behind.
