We are also now back in business with CGM readings on the watch!
That was honestly the main reason I got a smartwatch in the first place, but hasn't been doable since I switched the CGM reader over to the new phone. Which the watch has repeatedly refused to pair with. 🤬 I really do need to get that worked out, even if it does require seeking some advice on the GrapheneOS forum. What info I have found did NOT fix whatever issue it's having during the pairing process.
But anyway, I caved and just reconnected the watch to the busted screen Samsung phone I had been using it with all along. Which meant no handy blood sugar data feed anymore.
Only now, with the help of a working Nightscout site, we're back!

I’m still so confused, I’ve had Xdrip running on my phone for a while, but setting up a site and connecting the data for nightscout to function IS STILL SO CONFUSING TO ME. I see the words but I don’t really get what its asking me to do. Can anyone help me out? Does anyone know of like a youtube video tutorial that could help me out or something??

the clinic that set me up with nightscout told me my api secret twice and I still haven't written it down and I somehow got disconnected from nightscout again? Idk why maybe because the app updated? Or because I turned it off when I went on vacation but now I can't turn it back on. Anyway I'm using xDrip+ and I didn't realize I couldn't connect to nightscout until today and I have an appointment at 2 and I'll have to ask for my api secret for a third time so they can see my blood sugar. Oops.

Guess who just got their own damn Nightscout deployment fixed! Now, to actually get the CGM data fed over there... 😊
I am so done with all of this for tonight. Time to take out some frustration in games, and/or try to just chill and watch some videos. Preferably not tech-related.
But, I did find it darkly funny in a way that the best solution I have found so far to actually keep useful access to several years' worth of Diabox data, is to finally get a Nightscout instance up and running properly. Which I have kept meaning to do anyway. Should be able to import that data, and keep some continuity with the current xDrip+ install. (Which was kinda developed for use with Nigjtscout.)
That would of course also make it easier to, like, put a handy CGM display widget on my computer desktop or feed it to a variety of other displays. Which was my original draw.
Looking into it again, I am sorely tempted to just use a hosting service like NS10BE and have done with it. It's well worth €50 a year for me not to have to fuck around with that anymore, and they do seem to have a good reputation.
But! But! With my hobbled filthy foreign devil bank account and its debit card, I cannot pay the nice tech company! 🤣 I am blocked from any repeating subscriptions, and Maestro doesn't work with some payment processors anyway.
So yeah, either I am going to have to ask Mr. C to pony up for that--OR I am going to have to eat my pride and ask him to please help get the existing middling-DIY attempt up and running properly. I mean, it probably wouldn't be a major problem for him to set up something completely self-hosted in house, never mind sort out whatever the hell OTHER error I started getting trying to access that database once the one I mentioned there was out of the way.
But, my "just knowledgeable enough to break shit in interesting ways" tinkerer ass really avoids asking for any technical help from the Household IT Professional on his own time. I feel like a dumbass, and he spends MORE than enough time and energy on frustrating tech problems as it is.
Anyway, I did find it darkly hilarious in the context of some ongoing frustrations which are currently really flaring up here, that I cannot even reasonably bail myself out of this little cluster of aggravations for €50 on my own.

Spionageaktivitäten gegen Regierungen
Tumblr media

Exploring the Visual Studio Code REST Book extension for native Notebooks
My co-worker Tanha Kabir has a cool Visual Studio Code extension called REST Book. Sure, there's lots of extensions and lots of ways to call REST APIs from Visual Studio Code - not to mention the command line.
However, REST Book is a Postman-like notebook that uses the Native Notebooks UI experience that's already built into Visual Studio code.
If you already love the concept of Notebooks like I do, you'll love REST Book. It's electric paper! Just like .NET Interactive or Jupyter Notebooks, it mixes Prose and Code in a very clean and very intuitive interface.
NOTE: Today the REST Book extension requires Visual Studio Code Insiders, but not for long. Get Insiders and run it side-by-side with a stable VS Code here.
Here's me calling into my Nightscout server to see my real-time Blood Glucose:
Pretty cool. It's early days but I think Tanha already has a very interesting combination of a native Notebook experience and a Postman-like experience. Note I've also created a "SECRET" in the form of my API Key, and then I can refer to it in the GET request using $SECRETS.name.
You can also assign variables like:
let foo = GET https://hanselman.com
and then use them in subsequent cells with $.foo.headers.User-Agent, etc.
Just install the Rest Book extesnion in VS Code Insiders, and make a new empty text file with a .restbook extension.
You can do GET and have the URL on multiple lines if you split on a ? or &
GET https://www.google.com ?query="hanselman" &page=2 User-Agent: rest-book Content-Type: application/json
And you can POST and each new line will be a Header, until the last lines after a line separator which is the body of the call.
POST https://www.myexampleapi.com User-Agent: rest-book Content-Type: application/json { name: "Hello", text: "Hi friends, how are you all?" }
If you want to get involved, look at the source, file an issue or bug, or just give compliments, do it over on her repository at https://github.com/tanhakabir/rest-book Have fun!
Sponsor: The No. 1 reason developers choose Couchbase? You can use your existing SQL++ skills to easily query and access JSON. That’s more power and flexibility with less training. Learn more.
