Jaqui watched as Ruben tossed and turned in his sleep. She hated that she needed to leave this one up to Obi, but she trusted her partner. Trusted him to protect the youngster that had somehow got under her skin.

Ruben gasped, physically gave a start as he jolted awake. She was by his side before she’d even had the chance to hesitate.

‘You’re OK,’ she told him simply, one hand hovering at his shoulder, the other at the waistband holding her scabbard.

For a moment, Ruben’s eyes were wide with panic. They darted around the darkness behind her as if he might have any hope of piercing it.

Slowly, his eyes moved to rest on her. A little of that fear receded. It shifted a little of the tense knot that had formed in her chest.

‘Thanks for staying,’ he offered softly.

‘It’s my job,’ she told him stoically. ‘Go back to sleep, Ruben.’

He surveyed her for a moment before hunkering down once more. ‘I know, but thank you,’ he offered, tiredness seeping into his words. ‘I love you.’

The words were like a punch to the gut. Jaqui wasn’t meant to get attached, and she never did. But Ruben had wormed his way under her armour. He was like a little brother to her, and the realisation that he felt that familial link to her too was something she certainly hadn’t expected.

I feel like the biggest issue with transferring fantasy to a live action movie is that the redesigns focus too much on realism in context to our world. If that makes any sense. A fantasy creature from a world different from ours wouldn't follow the exact same laws our animals do.

Like in Avatar. The alien monsters are well, alien. But it is an alien world, by all intents and purposes, they are 'realistic.' I guess I should trade the word 'realistic' for 'believable' instead. They fit in with the world around them, they make logical sense in the world that you are presented with.

All of this to say uh. Be silly. Be goofy. Exaggerate those shapes and ecology!!!

Every single day I thank god and Matthew Braly that there are no significant human male characters in the entirety of amphibia. Can you imagine how absoloutly fucking horrific the fandom would be if there was an average annoying guy character the same age as the calamity trio? Even just like a named side character like a friend of the trio's on earth that's shown in flashbacks...... The fandom would be in shambles. I would probably be on some sort of watch list with how hard I would get cancelled for bullying. I cannot even imagine.
