It was a day of miracles in Wengen (SUI) today. Most had written off any chance of today’s Audi FIS World Cup alpine combined race to even be staged after a fierce winter storm unleashed its fury overnight and through much of the morning. Most generally don’t expect a racer with starting with Bib #51 to win at one of the most iconic stops on the tour, but ultimately, both miracles happened as unknown Swiss rookie Niels Hintermann took home his first-ever World Cup victory.
The Organisers scrambled through the night, and a late change to the programme ultimately saved the day as the slalom was run before the downhill portion. Throughout the slalom, heavy snow continued to fall as the racers battled down the course. Justin Murisier (SUI) ultimately was the fastest man down the mountain in the slalom.
A small window of opportunity gave the Organisers a chance to prepare the course for the downhill, but those that were strong in the slalom were the ones that were ultimately punished in a downhill as the snowfall steadily picked up giving the early starters the clear advantage. One racer that made the most of the opportunity was Hintermann, who was the seventh racer in the downhill, and claimed the fastest time that stood as some of the top names came down the Lauberhorn with not luck against the conditions.
The entire podium was made up of racers who were among the first ten starters in the downhill. Maxence Muzaton (FRA) and Frederic Berthold (AUT) rounded out the unlikely podium. In fact, it was the first podium for all three of today’s top-three finishers.

Atomic Media Day celebrated the Redster team for the coming season
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Two weeks ahead of the World Cup opening in Sölden, Atomic’s media event at the new Atomic Experience Center in Altenmarkt brought together 100 international journalists, the Redster stars and the surprise appearance by Marcel Hirscher.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
“I will always be a ski racing fan and watch you guys on TV”, said Hirscher after his much applauded appearance on stage – giving way to his long-time Atomic teammates.
While the “Marcel era” will remain one of a kind in the history of alpine skiing, Atomic is looking forward to a great season.
Stronger team with new members
Christian Höflehner, Atomic Global race manager and the most successful team racing manager is optimistic about the coming season.
The Atomic team has become even stronger thanks to some new members. Model athlete Aleksander Aamodt Kilde – according to insiders, the logical successor to Norway’s ski heroes Lasse Kjus and Aksel Lund Svindal, who celebrated some of their greatest victories on Atomic skis – and Eva-Maria Brem, former winner of the Giant Slalom World Cup, are both back on the Atomic Redster team.
Also ÖSV-racer Ricarda Haaser is new to the team, along with six other racers, all ready to become the best version of themselves this winter – on the best race equipment available.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Big names, young guns
This is the Redster team for the season 2019/2020 – a line-up with just the right mix of experienced and next-generation athletes. Ladypower headed by Mikaela Shiffrin and Sofia Goggia and backed by Stephanie Venier, Riccarda Haaser, Ester Ledecka, Mirjam Pucher, Katharina Gallhuber, Christina Ager, Chiara Mair, Sabrina Maier, Ando Asa, Nicole and Nadia Delago and Eva-Maria Brem.
On the men’s side there’s also a great team of big names and young guns.
Besides Aleksander Aamodt Kilde. these guys will soon start their season on Atomic race equipment from Altenmarkt: Peter Fill, Manuel Feller, Marco Schwarz, Marc Digruber, Daniel Danklmaier, Mauro Caviezel, Niels Hintermann, Simon Maurberger, Alexander Prast, Florian Schieder, Filip Zubcic, Istok Rodes, Adrian Smiseth Sejersted, Elias Kolega, and Klemen Kosi.

Rennanzug statt Uniform
(Quelle: www.armee.ch)

Host Swiss get gold as Beat Feuz wins downhill world title
Host nation Switzerland got the world championships gold medal it most wanted when Beat Feuz won the downhill Sunday.Roger Federer had a front-row seat in the stands to see Feuz finish 0.12 seconds faster than Erik Guay of Canada, denying the winner of Wednesday's super-G a speed title double.Max Franz of Austria was third, 0.37 behind Feuz, who took downhill bronze two years ago.Though Feuz's top speed of 119 kph (74 mph) was slower than many rivals, he was best at keeping speed through the twisting turns midway down a shortened course. "I felt the pressure," said Feuz, favored to repeat his win in the World Cup finals downhill last March, through a translator.
Feuz joined Swiss teammate Wendy Holdener, winner of the women's combined event on Friday, as home gold medalists from the first five races.The Swiss men's team had underachieved this season, and its only win on the World Cup circuit was a fluke success for Niels Hintermann in a snow-affected combined event at Wengen.
Erik Guay of Canada
"I would have loved to start from Free Fall because it's a little bit faster then," said Feuz, whose run turned out to be fast enough regardless.
I knew the expectations of the Swiss people. It was important not to go crazy with all that.
G a speed title double.Max Franz of Austria
