Wanda is my phones wallpaper. She was the first representation of a trans woman I ever saw that even approached being positive and I didn't see anything positive for like 12 years after that. She was the first time I realized that what I was feeling was something good people could feel abd that I wasn't a monster. Thank you Niel for a 14 year old Mormon closeted trans girl it was a treasured refuge in a harsh landscape and I hope I can thank you irl someday

Hello Neil, I've just finished "A game of you". It's a wonderful book (thank you), and it broke me utterly. I haven't cried myself to sleep over a story in years. The gravestone and the funeral were devastating on a very personal level (I'm trans, too, and I imagine my relatives would act exactly the same). A lot about Wanda hit home, but it also made it the hardest Sandman tale to stomach for me, so far.

I was curious if there was something specific that inspired or shaped her storyline? And in retrospective, is there something about it you would change or handle differently?

P.S. for fairness sake, I did make you a whale. Just a two-dimensional and rather awkward one

It began with my friend Roz Kaveney telling me about her friends who were being buried under their deadnames, hair cut, in male clothes, and my anger about that. I had no idea that happened, and it seemed wrong. Roz and the late Rachel Pollack were both good friends, and I realised that I wasn't seeing any trans women in fiction in 1989, so I wrote my own.

I made a few changes for the Audible adaptation.

In the 1950s, North American neuropsychologists began intensively investigating the question of how the brain reacts when it is cut off from the barrage of information is usually receives via our sensory organs. Until then, the dominant theory was that such sensory deprivation would have an effect comparable to pulling the plug on an electric lawnmower: the brain would switch to sleep mode. But there was no real proof to back up this theory. That gap in research was destined to be filled first by the Canadian psychologist Donald Hebb. 

Together with his student Walter Bexton, Hebb recruited participants for an unusual experiment at McGill University in Montreal. Subjects were offered 20 dollars — a relatively large amount of money at the time — for every day they spent doing absolutely nothing. They were asked to stay in a soundproof room, which was insulated against noise from the outside, but with the constant hum of an air-conditioning unit audible inside.

This meant the subjects were not able to hear the sounds made by their own bodies breathing and swallowing, or the sound of their own hearts beating. They wore goggles with heavily frosted glass, isolating them visually, while very soft furnishings, cotton gloves on their hands, and cardboard tubes on their arms meant their sense of touch was very limited. Apart from this, the experiment did not appear to make great demands on the subjects: do nothing and earn good money while doing it — Hebb had no problem finding enough recruits for his study...

However, those recruits would soon regret their decision. Most aborted the experiment after just two days, and none managed to endure this ‘senseless’ environment for longer than a week. The subjects found the experience simply unbearable.

Soon after the start of the trial, they began to have difficulty concentrating. Their minds would constantly wander, causing them to score abysmally on the cognitive tests they were required to complete periodically. They found themselves bombarded by memories that raged unfiltered and unbridled into their conscious minds.

Many subjects reported hearing voices that were not really there, and some even heard music. Others saw wallpaper patterns or entire scenes, where they encountered dogs or children, or felt they were being shot with pellets. The strangest hallucinations were experienced by one subject, who saw a procession of squirrels in snowshoes with sacks over their shoulders marching across the room. That even trumps the visions of another volunteer, who saw prehistoric monsters walking through a jungle.

Conjuration 5: Sorcery Illumination

As with all my most important magickal workings, this one was almost entirely improvised and came to me an hour or two before I did it. I knew when I went home for the holidays I’d find an appropriate “lamp” among my magickal detritus, and I found myself disappointed at the cracked and crumbling state of the bull sculpture I’d made for a servitor of mine. Since I’ve taken the bull to be a personal symbol of myself, of course I decided to make it my lamp for this working and refurbish it to be a more lofty vessel that will allow the servitor to grow in power. It’s already a bit symbolic of my own practice in addition to being practical housing, so working on it would be a good combination of personal symbolism and practical goals.

For the initial repairs I decided to paint over the cracks and chips with paper mache made from the wordier pages of my gutter bible. I used similar, let’s say evocative substance when initially giving life to the servitor, so it felt appropriately like a second birth. I mummified her in the scribblings of a madwoman to the tune of Nier.

The servitor itself was unusually active, protesting when I removed her seal from the bottle within the idol and loudly snapping next to my right ear when she felt the new wallpaper was done. I hope to give her a new lease on life with these improvements so she can grow alongside me. I’ve even thought about making her into an artificial HGA. But that’s the nature of the lamp - it doesn’t have to be done. It just has to be indicative of my goals and aspirations. And right now I’m not gonna give up on this old project of mine just because it’s a little neglected and dry and I drifted a bit from that praxis - I can still get back to my Chaos roots and finish what I started.
