Online/Offline [C.S] - one hundred and two | now you *have* to explain
“I don’t know, auntie.”
A customer walked up to the counter.
Minsoo covered her phone with her hand. “Y/n?”
You came out of the kitchen. “Yeah?”
“Can you help this customer? My aunt is on the phone.”
“Yeah, you can take it outside if you want.”
“Thank you.” Minsoo said to you before replying to her phone, “I said I don’t know, auntie.”
You helped the customer and about ten minutes later, Minsoo came back over to the counter looking frazzled. “Sorry about that.”
“What was that about?”
“My aunt - San’s mom - was asking me if I’ve seen San and what he was up to and everything. Apparently she heard something was going on with him through her lawyer because he knows someone who knows San’s lawyer.” She rolled her eyes with a sigh.
“Oh? He doesn’t call her?”
Minsoo shook her head. “Not since the emancipation.”
Your eyebrows shot up. “The what?”
“Uhhhhh.”
“I mean, I guess you don’t have to tell me if--”
“San was a Chaebol heir!”
You choked on your own spit. You had no idea how you inhaled it, but you were so surprised you started choking. “A-- what?!” You coughed.
“Shit, I wasn’t supposed to tell anyone,” Minsoo whined.
“Then why did you say it?!”
“I don’t know! His mom always plays with my head! I’m sorry!”
“Don’t apologize to me!”
“Ahh!” Minsoo whined.
You laughed. “Well, now you have to explain.”
“Ugh, okay, but don’t tell him I told you.”
“Fine, I won’t.”
“So… ugh, okay. So when San was maybe sixteen, he met Seonghwa in school.”
You nodded.
She nodded. “When San was eighteen, there was this whole big fight in our family, because his dad is the current owner of Choi Electronics - which is like, electronics mostly, but a whole bunch of subsidiaries - and they wanted to merge with another company when he turned twenty.”
You nodded.
“They actually could have merged when he was eighteen, but they decided that he and the daughter of the owner of the other company should be married for like… I don’t  know, security or something, so they had to wait until they both turned twenty. But they made them meet when they were both eighteen.”
“Holy shit. The lives of rich people are insane. That sounds like medieval kingdoms allying with each other.”
“Maybe, I don’t know. A lot of families do it but it’s so archaic.” Minsoo took her phone out of her pocket.
You looked at her quizzically.
“I’m making sure the call ended. If my aunt heard me say that, she’d kill me.”
You nodded. “Are your parents like his parents at all?”
She put her phone away and grimaced as she thought. “Not as much?”
Your eyebrows lifted in silent questioning.
“Like, my mom is his dad’s younger sister, so she works for the company but never had that kind of pressure, and I never had it either. We’re just not that important.”
“That must be nice. You get the money but not the responsibility.”
She seemed to weigh something in her mind before continuing. “But… once I tell them I’m dating Seonghwa, we’re probably going to get into a fight… and there’s a good chance I could get cut off.”
“Oh my god. They don’t know?”
She nodded.
“I mean-- not to derail, but would you break up with him for them?”
She looked at you flatly, a face you’ve seen Seonghwa make multiple times when he was displeased by someone or something. You raised your brows in surprise.
“Break up with the lovely nerd-man who’s helping me learn to stick up for myself and who thinks my being chubby is cute or neutral, so I can stay with a family who calls me fat and wants me to be a doormat?”
You pointed at her aggressively. “I TOLD YOU he’d think it was cute!” And banged your fist against the counter in excitement.
“When did you say that?” She laughed.
“Didn’t I? I don’t know, maybe I just thought it. But whatever, I was still right! You’re adorable.”
She laughed bashfully.
“But yeah, don’t break up with him for them.”
“I don’t want to, but I get the feeling that they’re going to give me an ultimatum and I’m going to have to find an apartment soon.” She sighed.
“Maybe you can move in with him; combine your Gundam collection.”
She chuckled.
“But yeah, the San thing, go ahead.”
“So anyway… the fight started because San and the girl had an official meeting - it’s a blind date - and he came back from the meeting saying that he hated her. I never met her, but San called me afterwards and told me everything she said, and she seemed like, uh…”
“A heinous human being?”
“Yeah. Like a real princess who’s used to everyone waiting on them hand and foot, you know?”
You nodded.
“So then he went to his parents and was like ‘I’m not marrying her,’ and they were like, ‘What about the daughter of this other company?’”
“And that obviously wasn’t the point.”
“Yeah. So he told them he didn’t want to marry someone they picked out for him because her dad’s company was doing well because he didn’t want to be miserable for the rest of his life… And they fought for weeks. He got his own lawyer, and this whole court case happened, and he basically had himself legally estranged from the family and got some amount of money from them that I don’t know, and then they cut him off.”
“Wow.”
“Yeah, he’s not in any wills anymore or anything.”
“Holy shit.”
“Yeah. I actually uh… I helped my grandma do a sneaky thing and she made my amount of her will larger so I could give it to him.”
“Did you?”
“Of course.”
You held up your fist for her to pound it and she did.
“You’re a solid girl, Minsoo. I’m surprised you weren’t too scared to do it.”
She shook her head. “I’d do anything my grandma would ask me. She was such a beacon of love in our family… and sense.”
“Shame no one else took after her.”
She nodded sadly.
“So were the results of the case their retaliation? Or is that what San wanted?”
“Being written out of the wills was his parent’s requirement. He got whatever money was legally in his name, and gave some of it to Seonghwa to start this café.”
“Oh, wow…”
You looked around the café. It had never occurred to you that someone as young as Seonghwa being a café owner meant that he had to have a nice chunk of cash on hand to make everything happen.
“I had no idea. Why has he never said anything? Also… I thought Seonghwa was the owner?”
“He is. San is his investor.”
“Holy shit, I had no idea.”
Minsoo nodded. “Yeah.”
“Did he ever say why he emancipated himself?”
“Not to me. But it’s pretty obvious, I think. He wanted to be in charge of his own life.”
You nodded. “Yeah, I guess all that money is kind of pointless if you can’t live the way you want and are forced to marry someone you don’t even like.”
Minsoo nodded.
The two of you stood in silence for a bit.
“You can not tell him I told you.”
“I won’t, don’t worry.”
Obviously, you had to talk to him about it.

TYLA - "ART"
youtube
We'll need to frame this one...
[7.44]
Alfred Soto: Ari Lennox and Victoria Monét have recorded similarly tasteful conceits in recent months, and if "ART" sounds as if Tyla hasn't thought out her conceit — she's a work of art painted by her lover, or is she painted on by a lover, and either way, is that cool? — she sounds as convincing. The rattling percussion creates a mild erotic simmer that warms up come-ons like "fresh out the gallery/can you handle me?" [8]
Kat Stevens: Is Tyla exploring art as an emotional outlet, a conduit for shared meaning in our humanity? The evidence for that is lacking here, while the clinical, understated tones of the Cassie-does-amapiano backing point towards formalism and modernism over expressionism or romanticism. Yet Tyla does not push the boundaries of a constrained medium, nor does she delve deep into the layers of societal collapse that surrounds us. Instead, the lyrics lean into audience-focused consumption: Tyla is merely art to be displayed, a pretty Rococo portrait to impress the neighbours. Reclaiming capitalist objectification might be the ultimate goal of 21st century art but it leaves an unsatsifying aftertaste to this feminist. Luckily for Tyla, Aristotolian mimetics tells us that true art is about making populist bangers, and "ART" does indeed bang. [6]
Mark Sinker: A joke I like from old TV sketches is when the gorgeous model eagerly skips across the room to look at the canvas and discovers the painter is some rigorous modernist and it’s all yellow and black zigzags or whatever. De Stijl me like one of your Dutch girls. Tyla is very caught up in her notion here, and this song does not skip across the room. It sounds beguiling enough, but it discovers nothing. [6]
Katherine St. Asaph: One Cool Trick to Troll the Artists in Your Life! [6]
Nortey Dowuona: Tyla has such an arresting soprano that whatever kind of loose, wispy chords and heavy bass log drums you place before her, she can ride them, gently sculpting them to her use. Sammy SoSo, architect of "Water" (and "Me Pongo Loca" by Kali Uchis, "See Me Now" by Nasty C, "Playing Chess" by J Hus, and "Bare With Me" by Ms Banks — maybe a remix with her of this pls) leads the background vocals over light, airy synths but leaves them in the distance. Tyla leans on them for support, making her a stronger presence. Tyla you will always be loved but not famous cuz that is dangerousss. [10]
Ian Mathers: In retrospect I gave "Water" something I'll call "the gentleman's [8]," here meaning "if I'd first heard the song maybe a week earlier it would have been a [10], easy." "ART" only confirms that hindsight, because this is a very solid [8] and I feel a bit silly giving both songs the same score. Such is the agony and the ecstasy of the Singles Jukebox. [8]
TA Inskeep: A fresh-sounding blend of amapiano and smooth R&B that's subtly hip-shaking but also pretty damned sexy (though not as much so as "Water," which I wish I'd blurbed, an easy [9] for me). Pray that Tyla sticks with this groove and doesn't get sucked into the UK dance music machine, because this is where she belongs. [7]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: Doesn't go down as easy as "Water," largely because the lyrics and delivery are clunky. But there's an appeal to that, how in Tyla's desire to entice, she sounds most at ease when going back to basics: "I'll be your A-R-T" is, yes, an evocative message as simple as A-B-C. [8]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: An interesting exercise in expectations: if I encountered this in the wider world, shorn from the context of being a single off of an immensely hyped-up album from an artist who made one of this site's favorite songs of last year, would I still love it? Part of me wants to say no – the things that truly endear "ART" to me, like the way Tyla's voice intersects with the backing vocals or the soothing hum of the organ as it mixes in with the kick drum, are features that only reveal themselves with slightly closer inspection. But "ART" has enough in the way of immediate appeal to draw you in even if you've never heard "Water," the depth of Tyla's hooks pulling at me from even a moment's listen. [8]

My Saints Row fancasts
(So far I’ve only made videos of Victoria, Johnny, Shaundi, and Pierce. I’ll get to the other characters when the inspiration hits)
Tumblr media
Kat Graham as my Boss Victoria “Tori” Queens (some people I know say I look a bit like Kat, so I went with her as Victoria)
Tumblr media
C.A.P/Bang Minsoo as Johnny Gat (he doesn’t have a lot of material to work with, so I’ll most likely change fancasts after I make a Johnny x Aisha video)
Tumblr media
Jade Tailor as Shaundi
Tumblr media
Stephan James as Pierce Washington
Tumblr media
Jane Levy as Kenzie Kensington
Tumblr media
Shay Mitchell as Viola DeWynter and Olivia Munn as Kiki DeWynter
Tumblr media
David Banner as Benjamin King (ever since I was little, I always thought SR1 Ben looked a lot like David Banner)
Tumblr media
Jon Ecker as Troy Bradshaw (credit to @eulerami-art for this god tier idea)
Tumblr media
Keke Palmer as Aisha
Tumblr media
Meng Jia as Lin and Jude Demorest as Tanya Winters (I had to combine their pictures cuz of the 10 picture limit lol)
Characters I want to fancast, but can’t think of who to fancast them as:
•Carlos Mendoza (I was thinking of Diego Tinoco, but I’m not sure. I kinda want someone that looks a bit younger, but if I can’t think of anyone else, I’ll stick with him)
•Matt Miller
•Asha Odekar (I thought of too many actresses to choose from omg help)
•Oleg
•Julius Little
•Dex (there are two actors I always thought he looked like when I was little, Orlando Jones and Miguel A. Núñez Jr., but they’ve aged WAAAY out of the role, so idk what to do)
•Josh Birk (idk, name any white pretty boy actor that looks 25-30 and I’ll probably go with them lol)

PARK JAEHO
age: 93 liner company: higher records position: legacy’s lead dancer/vocal traits: (+) thoughtful, creative, hardworking (-) defensive, distant, reclusive played by: rose
tw: child abandonment/absentee parent
lmao literally do not read this its too long – basically his mom didnt want him when he was born so his grandparents raised him in berlin, germany, and he first became a tattoo apprentice there. his grandparents didn’t want him to be a tattoo artist and so he went to seoul to be a member of legacy instead. because their first company sucked he kept tattooing as a trainee in korea so they could have some amount of money, now he only does tattoos for his close friends mostly and he’s just chillin and happy in legacy !
When Jaeho was growing up in Berlin, the few memories he had of his mother were all what his grandparents told him rather than being with her. Though she was mostly estranged from them by the time Jaeho was born, she called her parents and told them that she’d had a baby and didn’t want him, and they said they would raise Jaeho in Germany where they had retired.
His grandparents tried to give him a normal life in Berlin; he went to school, helped them at home, played piano, and drew often. He switched easily from speaking German at school to singing to the old Korean trot music his grandparents often played, and easily picked up a good understanding of English from the classes he took in school.
Jaeho tried to not pay too much attention to the fact that he was raised with his grandparents and either of his parents were rarely mentioned to him without his grandparents seeming upset, especially his mother. But he always overthought how his grandparents didn’t intend to raise a kid once they had already retired, they already did that with whoever his mother was and in their late sixties and early seventies had to do it all over again.
While Jaeho always excelled at the piano like his grandparents loved, he loved drawing if not more. When Jaeho was sixteen he got a tattoo apprenticeship, but when he mentioned it to his grandparents that he got the offer, they immediately voiced their disapproval. They were reluctant to agree to let Jaeho do it at first, even though they knew he was being honest when he promised he’d be able to balance his schoolwork, the apprenticeship after school, as well as still helping them around the house. But eventually they let him, hoping that they’d be able to talk him out of actually going into tattooing once he finished high school. Jaeho studied under the shop’s artists for the duration of his time in high school, and believed that after he graduated, he would become a tattoo artist like they were.
Though Jaeho’s grandparents acknowledged his skills at drawing, they thought that if he had to pursue a career in the arts, they preferred if he was in music rather than tattooing. One day, they suggested that he return to Korea to study music or maybe become an idol. Anything was better than tattooing. Jaeho was hesitant to agree, but not because they were asking him to quit his apprenticeship. Moving to Korea brought up the person that had went almost unmentioned in their household for years: his mother. He has spent his whole life so far mostly-happy by ignoring her absence, the last thing Jaeho wanted was to be reminded of her any more than he already was.
Jaeho personally doubted he was good enough at piano to be accepted into a music conservatory in Korea, but he decided to audition to possibly become an idol. He sent an audition video and was accepted to a small company called IL Studios at the age of eighteen. He wanted to go and train with them, but he also knew that he would have to quit tattooing since it was illegal in Korea and it didn’t make any sense to him how he could do tattoos and be an idol at the same time.
Had it not been for IL Studios, Jaeho probably have walked away from tattooing forever. He found that he loved Seoul and the other boys he trained with for roughly two years before debuting with them at the age of twenty, but it was impossibly not to ignore the issues with the company itself. He and the other members had almost no money. Since tattooing was the only way of making any that he was qualified for, he started working as much as he could at a tattoo shop in Seoul without telling IL Studios or, more importantly, his grandparents.
It was strange at first to work at the shop and with Legacy, but Jaeho soon became accustomed to it, as well as being nearly exhausted most days from working as much as he could. Thankfully it wasn’t very long that he needed worry about having any other income to continue without any real support from a company. As soon as they moved from IL Studios to Higher Records, Jaeho felt an almost-overwhelming sense of relief and was able to focus solely on Legacy. since then he’s only ever tattooed because he wants to do them with close friends and not because he needed the money.
While Jaeho still struggles sometimes to not feel emotionally distant from those who aren’t already his close friends, he’s incredibly more confident in who he is now than he was growing up. He loves Legacy and hasn’t had to worry about what’s going to happen to the group in years and he still tattoos sometimes in his spare time out of love for it. Though he still makes sure to keep his tattoos covered up around his grandparents so they won’t have to see them, he no longer feels like he’s hiding so much from them.
