Top 7 reads of 2023

I was challenged by @mostlyinthemorning to make a list of my top seven reads. It was a complicated task, so I started with 20 that really stuck with me and narrowed it down to seven.

Not in any order, but I exclusively read gay romance so all these books have that in common.

The District Line- CF White

Mike and Jay come from different worlds but are both striving for more. They both have big dreams and the struggle to make their relationship work is big, all-encompassing and takes 4 books to get a HEA. An investment in time, but well worth it. I loved my time living in London and understanding the class issues really made this poignant.

Until You- Briar Prescott

This is a seemingly simple love story with some pretty damaged MC's but the twist made me gasp out loud. It stays with me.

The Art of Husbandry: Jay Hogan

I'm a very big fan of Jay Hogan, I demolished many of their books this year. This is a sweeping sprawling story, and the beauty in the words made me swoon. Honestly. So good. I might have to do a reread thinking about it now.

Building Forever- Kelly Jensen

I don't know how some books manage to take a seemingly simple story and just elevate it, but this is another that does. Actually, I lie. I do know. When you have to stop and reread a line, because it knocks you for a six- then you spend a moment breathing and contemplating the beauty of the line? That's the difference. Exquisite writing.

Love Me Whole- Nicky James

Oryn shares his life and headspace with five distinctively different alters. Reed, a protective, very straight jock. Cohen, a flamboyantly gay nineteen-year-old who is a social butterfly. Cove, a self-destructive terror, whose past haunts him. Theo, an asexual man of little emotion, whose focus is on maintaining order. And Rain, a five-year-old child whose only concern is Batman.

Vaughn can't stay away.

Boyfriend Goals- Riley Hart

This is just a super cute story. Read it.

Playing for Keeps- Avery Cockburn

This book had me on the edge of my seat. The secrets that John Burns are hiding are going to set him on fire but the romance is swoonworthy. A great cast of characters fill this out and I recommend the whole series but this first one? Whoosh. I had to throw the book down a few times I was so anxious.

Remember Isabel and Nicki Hoffman/Cohen? Well, it looks like they might be 90s historicals. Two reliable leak accounts have posted about them.

You can see the list of items better here. On the first image, they are marked HC for historical characters.

All of this screams 90s, and the presence of the Pizza Hut set suggests that AG has already been working with the brand to create the set- meaning that if this leak is real, a lot of preparation has gone into these girls that won’t be scrapped. 

I think what we’re going to see is this: twin girls with identical face molds, different hair, and possibly different eyes. One might have freckles or curls as opposed to straight hair. Nicki will probably be more of a tomboy and a skater, while Isabel will be a tennis player and a little more girly. AG will tap into their own history and give both girls exclusive mini AG dolls. One might have a TM, one might have a historical. The girls will be Jewish (Hoffman is German/Jewish and they were originally Cohens) and probably have another sibling as well. 

The labeling of “Journal” next to Nicki Doll suggests that their story might be told in journal format. Maybe the girls share a journal, or they each have one that contains a slightly different version of the same story.

Sharing, technology, and balancing your time will be big themes, designed to cater to the iPad kids of today (except with a big ol desktop computer instead).

I think Isabel might be nicknamed Izzy but hate it, while Nicki is a Nicole and prefers Nicki. 

I think we’ll see them in late summer/early fall of 2023.
